‘Miracle for Marcus’ event to be held this Saturday at Therapy

CADYVILLE — When Mar cus Walker was born, his mother , Amie Alexander, knew he would have health problems.

“I was only four months pr egnant, and [the doctors] noticed something was wrong,” said Alexander, who was referred downstate for further examination at the time.

Eventually, Mar cus was born four weeks premature with a condition known as gastroschisis, a congenital defect which caused portions of his intestines to form outside his body. Weighing only 4 pounds, 13 ounces, and measuring 17 inches long, Marcus’ mother worried for the health of her baby.

“He was born and ru shed right up to the [neonatal intensive care unit],” she said.

Marcus underwent five sur geries as a newborn to corr ect his condition, spending his first three and a half months of life intubated on a ventilator . During that time, Mar cus was just shy of two weeks old when doctors found a fistula — an abnormal connection in his intestines — which leaked stool into his abdominal cavity. He underwent sur gery to corr ect that pr oblem, but ended up necr otizing enterocolitis, which r esulted in the death

Rock-a-thon helps North Country Mission of Hope

Students spent 12 hours rocking in rocking chairs March 26 to raise money for North Country Mission of Hope’s Children Feeding Children.

SARANAC — Though it’s been said you can’t get blood from a stone, apparently you can get money from a rock.

The Saranac Central High School Key Club gathered several dozen participants in its second-ever “Rock-a-thon” at Saranac Elementary School March 26, raising more than $500 for the North Country Mission of Hope.

Key Club pr esident Megan Harris came up with the idea of holding the event after r eturning fr om a mission trip to Nicaragua with North Country Mission of Hope last year.

“I had heard that a church had done something called a Rock-a-thon, wher e they just rocked in rocking chairs for 12 hours and the participants got people to sponsor them a certain amount of money for every hour they rocked,” said the Saranac senior. “I thought it would be a good idea.”

Rather than make a general donation to Mission of Hope, Harris decided to focus on of the nonpr ofit or ganization’s pr ograms, “Children Feeding Children.”

“They pr ovide childr en with a hot meal and a drink every day of the week,” explained Harris. “And, for some of the kids, that’s basically all they get to eat.”

Having seen with her own eyes how people are still recovering from Hurricane Mitch — which devastated the Central American

country in 1998 — Harris is one of the several Mission of Hope volunteers who has felt compelled to not only help overseas but fr om here as well.

“It was just a really touching experience,” said Harris, referring to her first mission trip last year. “I just wanted to do whatever I could to contribute mor e than just being there in Nicaragua. I wanted to keep doing stuff here at home.”

Bennett Cyphers, a junior at Plattsbur gh High School, knows how Harris feels.

Cyphers participated in this year ’s Rock-athon, drawing his inter est from his own experience volunteering with Mission of Hope.

“I signed up not r eally knowing what it was really all about and when I got there my mind was blown,” said Cyphers. “The poverty there is horrible. They tell you about that going in. But, the people ther e wer e awesome. There is a lot of hope ther e. There’s a lot of good things going on there, too.”

The idea that simply rocking in a chair for 12 hours — with 20-minute bre aks every two hours — could help Nicaraguan childr en is something that blew Cyphers’ mind even more.

“This is a really cool event,” said Cyphers as he was on his sixth hour of r ocking during the event. “Anything that can get people to donate to the cause is a really good idea.”

“If people think they have to go to Nicaragua to participate, it’s r eally not the case,” said Harris. “Most of the contributions

Emily Crawfor d, a senior and vice pr esident of Saranac’s Key Club, said the gr oup had already surpassed last year’s total raised of $450, much to her delight.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Crawfor d. “We just wanted to make mor e than we did last year. It’s a r eally nice thing because every dollar we raise goes to help feeding children.”

“It’s kind of weird being in school on a Saturday, but it’s for a good cause,” added Saranac senior Mandy Erickson, laughing.

“It’s a gr eat feeling knowing that us sitting in a r ocking chair, just having fun, is doing something to raise money to help children.”

Key Club faculty advisor Joan Seidel commended the students for coming up with the fundraiser and for seeing it thr ough once again.

“It’s fantastic,” said Seidel. “It’s r eally good to see the kids come up with the ideas.

They’re very ambitious.”

Utility companies need to give back for use of Champlain basin

T

he year was 1998, and our managing editor was floating placidly on Schr oon Lake with his family, while the fir eworks display they watched r eflected brightly of f the water like a mirror. He decided to moor the boat near the W ord of Life Island and was shocked by what he found underwater.

Afterward, he reached for the anchor rope that held the boat in place, but it would not budge from the lake’s floor.

“I wasn’t sure if I had caught a log, or what, so I started to put my back into it and it slowly , painstakingly made its way up,” he recalled.

What the family saw rise to the surface attached to the anchor was no log.

Instead, it was a six-inch thick gre en cable with the words “Danger: High Voltage” printed on the side.

It was the electricity sour ce feeding the island — which had been long ago buried on the lake bottom by the power company.

The concept is to feed New York City with “clean, r enewable power” fr om Montreal to of fset a gr owing demand there and help lower some of the highest electricity rates in the country.

But at what cost to the North Country?

The company char ged with building the line — Canadian-based T ransmission Developers Inc. (TDI) — says the environmental impacts will be minimal.

They say the line will be monitor ed by a special fiber -optic coating that will automatically switch the power of f should the line become untangled or penetrated.

They say the electr o-magnetic field surrounding the 1,000-Megawatt line (that is 100 times mor e powerful than the one that feeds W ord of Life Island) will have no detriment to fish or plant life.

Let’s face it. This power line is unprecedented. It would be the larg est undertaking of its kind in the r egion and it deserves tremendous scrutiny before utility companies ar e allowed to r eap the financial rewards from its existence in our waterways.

And, as Mike W inslow of the Lake Champlain Committee pointed out, the people of this region should see more of

a benefit than watching a cable eel r boat float by from Ballard Park in Westport.

An economic analysis filed on behalf of the promoter to the New York Public Service Commission in July 2010 estimates that the pr ojected line would save New York customers $8.1 billion on their electricity bills over the first 10 years of operations, between 2015 and 2024.

If that’s tr uly the case, than utility companies sur ely stand to gain many times that amount. Certainly they will have the ability to afford cleanup efforts in the areas where they will benefit fro m using the region’s natural resources for their personal gain, both before and after they are here.

While it is nice that our neighbors to the south will benefit from this project, the reality is it will do nothing for the local population.

TDI says it will provide annual financial assistance for envir onmental pr ojects in the Lake Champlain Basin. But

A response to a response This letter is in response to Councilman Fenimore’s r ecent Letter to the Editor . Mr . Fenimore’s desir e to corr ect printed statements in which he felt he had been misquoted unfortunately has put us in the same position.

Elizabethtown has applied for $38,500 fr om the existing $500,000 Adirondack Park Community Smart Growth Grant Program. There are no matching funds required, but if ther e were, the Planning Board had agreed to work on this project and our unpaid, personal time would be considered an in-kind match.

The funding for the Hamlets 3 Pr oject resulted in an instructive booklet to teach local planners how to apply Smart Gr owth principles.

These principles will benefit our local businesses as well as pr eserving the unique characteristics of our town. Elizabethtown, Old For ge and Star Lake wer e fortunate to be the thr ee ar eas chosen. The Hamlets 3 project amounted to $120,000, not $250,000, as stated by Mr. Fenimore.

The competition for this grant is fierce and Elizabethtown will be fortunate to secure the funding. If Elizabethtown is chosen, this grant will

that assistance needs to be appr eciable and it needs to be long-lasting.

Moreover, part of the appr oval should be a requirement that money be put away to monitor, repair or even remove the line should it be deemed in any way an environmental hazard.

Residents would have been better served if officials had as much foresight with past environmental disasters such as the PCB pollution in the Hudson River, instead of listening to politicians whose jobs ar e too intrinsically linked to deep-pocketed business interests.

Let’s think very hard before we leave another envir onmental anchor in our lake for future generations to deal with.

Albany visit finds it’s business as usual at the State Capitol

L

ast week I had the privilege to spend a day walking the halls of the State Capitol, meeting with a number of elected officials, along with several other board members fr om the North Country Alliance, an economic development gr oup r epresenting six North Country counties.

The visit was one of awareness for the legislators, and it impr oved our understanding of the new financial realities in Albany so we can best help our communities enhance their economic opportunities. W e told them all about the NCA, and we r eminded legislators of the economic importance of tourism and prisons to the North Country . W e suggested that, when deliberating on prison closures, r esale and/or r euse of the property and the total economic impact should be given greater consideration. And we suggested they level the playing field for small, r ural communities to the state’s Excelsior Job Pr ogram. All pr etty mundane stuff.

If you’ve never paid a visit on your elected representatives in Albany, it’s an inter esting experience and one every citizen should find the time to do. I’ve been to the capitol before on

similar missions, but this year ’s visit impr essed me in ways that pr evious years had not. Given the state’s financial issues, there was an odd air about the building that I had not seen in the past.

As you go fr om of fice to of fice, I was impr essed with the age of the legislative staf f members, most of whom are young and very articulate.

Of course, it could be that as I get older, they keep looking younger , but the reality is that it’s the staff that accomplish a gr eat deal of the work conducted in Albany. They understand the issues, draft the opinions, keep their bosses on point while ru nning interfer ence when needed.

When theboss was unavailable, staf f would stand in and competently discuss the issues of the day while making clear their bosses' positions on a variety of subjects.

I was also str uck by the warm camaraderie between those who work closely within the capitol confines.

Much like a fraternity, there is a sense of “insiderness” that is appar ent among those who ar e current or former members of the inner workings.

There also didn’t appear to any political animosity among elected of ficials or their staf f, r egardless of which side of the aisle they may be seated. I was put back, but not surprised, when I learned that many had recently relocated their offices. When the Democrats took contr ol of the Senate, they “earned the right” to move into the bigger and better offices, but once the Republicans r egained control, many of those moves had to be r eversed. I understand there are advantages to being part of

the majority , but don't legislators have mor e important things to do than play musical office suites?

I also overheard and saw what I assumed wer e pr ofessional lobbyists, various union gr oups, school children and everyday citizens who looked like they wer e bussed in to perhaps r epresent those who might be affected by pending issues. Some wore names tags, gr oup r epresentation stickers or themed identical T shirts. Others carried signs, and still others wer e passing out position fliers. Overall, ther e was a complete mix of the state’s melting pot.

As we waited to see some Assembly and Senate members, you could hear thr ough the walls both happy and certainly more than a few unhappy constituents who — in heated language — made their concerns known.

Some of the of ficials we spoke with were engaging, some entertaining and others not very engaged at all.

I observed many dif ferent emotions during my day’s stay inAlbany.

As I dr ove home and r eflected on what I had hear d and observed, it dawned on me that nobody expressed the emotion of fear . I came away with the feeling that no one there seemed overly distraught

Protect the future for the next generation

W

e may be somewhat unique in the local business community . We ar e “twenty-something” entr epreneurs who have decided to stay in the Adirondacks instead of fleeing the ar ea for better opportunities. W e ar e the owners of Stacked Graphics in T upper Lake. W e ar e graphic designers who pr oduce vinyl signage, scr een printing, and embr oidered appar el to include “Ski Big T upper” clothing. W e wer e honor ed this year by the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce as the 2010 Entr epreneurs of the Year.

That’s our backgr ound, but we ar e mor e concerned about our future and that is the purpose of this letter.

Up until now, we haven’t heard the voice of young business owners in r egards to the pr oposed Adirondack Club and Resort (ACR) project. We have r ead the editorials, all the blogs and we attended the public hearing in T upper Lake last week and now we want to lend our say to the discussion.

It’s probably assumed that young adults are better educated in terms of “gr een” living and that we embrace that better than older generations. That maybe so, but simply stated we enjoyed gr owing up her e, we took advantage of all that this Park of fered and we want to continue to do so. W e believe str ongly in pr otecting the environment but we also str ongly support the ACR because we believe that it can be built with minimal impact on the landscape while having a significant impact on our economy.

After listening to the envir onmental groups speak and after r eading their letters and articles, we do not tru ly think that the enviro nmental groups are here to look after our best interests. We think they ar e here to look after their own. We must admit that they all seem to be one in the same- the Adirondack Council, Pr otect the Adirondacks, the Nature Conservancy, and now Adirondack Wild. All we know is that they seem to be working together in collusion to try to kill this pr oject and we take gr eat objection to that. We started our business in anticipation of the ACR gaining a permit and we ar e not alone. That pr oject will be the shot in the arm that small business around the Tri Lakes needs.

New businesses will take the same risk that we did, and that will cr eate new opportunities to sell our pr oducts. W ithout the ACR our economic outlook is bleak.

The claim that the ACR will fragment the back country is just plain false- that pr operty has been logged for years. We don’t think there are any endangered species of animal or plants on the property and the developer plans to install state of the art sewage tr eatment. W e haven’t heard a significant objection that can’t be overcome.

But curiously, even the four envir onmental groups who want to kill the pr oject can’t always agree on why. Protect the Adirondacks seems to care even less about the r esidents of T upper Lake than the other environmental groups. We say that because Pr otect lacked the nerve to speak in fr ont of us during the public hearing

last week. Did Protect the Adirondacks, led by Niskayuna lawyer John Caffry, simply lack the courage to show up? If they r eally were looking out for us, why wouldn’t they show up to explain how? Perhaps Protect the Adirondacks was too busy trying to raise $100K to buy expert witnesses to tell the experts at theAPA and DEC how to do their job. We’d like to hear the other gr een gr oups call them out on this because Protect does a disservice to tr ue protection the Park.

We thought that the origin of the Park was based upon a belief that people and the environment could both flourish within the Blue Line. Sadly for decades only the envir onment has prospered and that is not enough. Pr otect the Adirondacks is the group that seems to lack the most common understanding of the Park Agency Act. So here is our final point. If Protect the Adirondacks and other envir onmental groups r efuse to work with the ACR developers, the APA and DEC to create a viable permit then we ask them to leave the hearings because they simply intend on hurting T upper Lake rather than helping it. During hearings on March 22, Caffry from Protect called the resort the "largest threat" to the ecological integrity of the park. W e think that Pr otect is the “lar gest threat” to the economic integrity of the park.

about the many financial pr oblems facing the state. It was mor e a sense of business as usual, pr oblems to face, positions to defend, turf to protect, but I never saw the face of fear .

Was the r eason because we have too many safety nets in our society? Or is it because folks, as they look at the massive state budget, figur e if they argue, scr eam and thr eaten loud enough, they’ll get what they want?

You can't blame them; those tactics have worked in the past.

I did sense that the winds of change ar e blowing in Albany. W e can only hope our elected of ficials have the backbone and courage (because they sur e don't have the money) to stand up to those who want to maintain the status quo. If my business were in debt comparable to the state of New York, I know many things would be handled dif ferently than they are today. Unfortunately, I did not sense that the movers and shakers at the state capitol ar e in a “crisis management mode” yet. At least many seem to be awar e that a day of reckoning is on the horizon.

Getting kids into gardening fun

T

his past week, I visited my son’s pre-K class to help the childr en plant seeds. I was impr essed with their knowledge the seeds needed water to wake up! It was great seeing the enthusiasm this group of students had for gardening.

Gardening to some may seem like a chore or to others a wonderful way to reduce stress. For children, it is an important learning tool. Studies have shown gar dening incr eases a person’s envir onmental knowledge and sense of community. Resear ch has also shown children who garden perform better on science and math achievement tests, have incr eased nutritional knowledge, and also gain gr eater social inclusion by gender, race and ability.

If we are not careful, gardening can become a burden to a child who is or dered out to weed and water. But, with a small amount of thought, we can instill a lifetime passion. I let my kids help make decisions on what plants to put into the garden. As a result, we will always have carrots, lettuce, beans, and peas in the veggie patch. They help choose flowers for some of our containers. Sur e, the flowers ar en’t the ones I would pick, but my kids are much more excited about watering their flowers thr oughout the summer than helping me water my flowers.

During the gr owing season, I ask them to help me plant, weed, water and harvest, but only as much as they desir e to do so. If my 5-year -old son would rather squish mud through his toes after planting two bean seeds, so be it.

If I made him plant the entir e row, he won’t have a pleasant memory of gardening in years to come.

While I am gar dening, I also talk to my kids. We talk about the insects we see, the feel of the soil, and the plants. Thr ough this process, I am also continually increasing my gar den knowledge. They ar e always bound to ask questions that I don’t know the answer to. W e always look up those questions on the computer or in a book when we are finished.

In addition, there are a plethora of games you can play with your childr en, r ecipes you can cook after harvesting veggies fr om the garden, and books you can r ead with your childr en on gardening. I always find including childr en in gardening is a great way to get me excited about the garden!

Eat those green vegetables

I

f there is one thing I can’t str ess enough about impr oving your diet, it is to eat mor e green leafy vegetables!

While the USDA recommends eating three cups of leafy greens a day, I say the more the better . They ar e super nutrient powerhouses. Calorie for calorie, they are perhaps the most nutrient dense food available. They are a rich sourc e of minerals, including iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and vitamins, including vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins. They also pr ovide a variety of phytonutrients including beta-car otene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and even contain small amounts of Omega 3 fats. There are so many different varieties of greens, some of the more common varieties are spinach, kale, romaine, endive, dandelion, char d, and the list goes on and on.

So, I challenge you to try a new leafy green vegetable every week. Take a handful and sneak some into each meal. Scramble up some spinach with your eggs.

Throw some kale, into your salad (made up of other leafy greens), or use a big leaf like collards to wrap your sandwich.

A gr eat way to get the kiddos to eat more greens, is to thr ow some into a smoothie. Spinach works particularly well for this, and you won’t even know it’s in ther e despite the green color, but give it a try. Give it a fun name and make it into a fun activity for your kids and watch them guzzle it down.

Another plus, which is great to think about this time of year, is that greens are super easy to gr ow in your own garden. I love being able to head out to the garden and pick whichever gr eens I feel like having and cook them up or enjoy them raw. There is something so rewarding about gr owing your own food and knowing that no harmful chemicals were used in the pr ocess. Each bite tastes better and I savor it knowing the work that went into the harvest.

So, ar e you up to the challenge? Improve your health and eat those greens!

Community urged to take part in cancer prevention study

PLATTSBURGH — The American Cancer Society is seeking participants for its latest round of a gr oundbreaking cancer pr evention study.

American Cancer Society r epresentative Joan M. Sterling said she’s hoping to build on the success of a 2009 study in which 192 participants originally r egistered. That number was upped to 240, she said, but ended up resulting in 262 participants scre ened.

“It just really showed the community was really embracing this cancer pr evention study,” Sterling said.

Those who participated in the initial registration also did well in r esponding to important follow-up surveys, Sterling said, re sulting in the Plattsburgh area being among the top 1 1 per cent in the country for a r esponse rate. The follow-up surveys are critical to continuing the flow of information for researchers, she said.

“Unfortunately, that’s sometimes wher e the ball gets dropped,” Sterling said. “Some people have that excitement when they start participating in the study but then they don’t finish it.”

The initial CPS-3 study during the 1950s was one that linked smoking tobacco with lung cancer, and ultimately was responsible for the Sur geon General’s warning now found on cigar ette packs. This most r ecent study will look at the link between obesity to cancer, Sterling said.

“The study will look at wher e you lived, where you worked, what your eating habits were, what you weighed in high school, what you weigh now — there’s so much information that’s asked, but it’s important to know all of it,” Sterling said.

“We’ve talked about having a cur e for cancer for decades now, but I think we’re all astute enough to know that cur e doesn’t happen overnight,” Williams said. “It has to

Registration for the study will be open to those ages 30-65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer and willing to make a long-term commitment to the study . News of the Week Suspect commits suicide after chase PLATTSBURGH — A wanted man led police on a high-speed chase for nearly an hour befor e taking his own life.

Reports indicate that the chase began at about 3:43 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Route 1 1 in the town of Mooers after Border Patrol agents observed two occupants acting suspiciously inside a vehicle.

Police told media outlets that one agent r ecognized the male driver as a wanted man before he drove off at high speed.

Assault charges lodged after dispute PERU — Kelly M. Ledwith, 36, was char ged with second-degree assault and thir d-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, after allegedly assaulting a man with a knife during a domestic dispute Mar ch 26.

State police allege Ledwith cut Bernard M. Furnia Jr., 42, AuSable Forks, during an ar gument at Ledwith’s residence. Furnia received multiple lacerations and was taken to CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh. He was later treated and released.

Ledwith was also charged with a misdemeanor count of fourth-degr ee criminal mischief, unlawful possession of marijuana and having a controlled substance in a non-original container.

She was arraigned in Black Br ook Town Court and sent to Clinton County Jail on $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond.

Woman arrested for alleged assault MOOERS — Carol Ann Weckesser, 45, Mooers Forks, was charged with a felony count of assault with intent to cause injury with a weapon and two misdemeanors following a domestic dispute March 26.

State police allege W eckesser threatened her former boyfriend’s new girlfriend with a small kitchen knife.

Weckesser was r eportedly staying at her former boyfriend’s Blackman Corners Road re sidence until she could find a new home.

Weckesser was further char ged with misdemeanor charges of fourth-degr ee criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree menacing.

She was arraigned before in Mooers Town Court and sent to Clinton County Jail on $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond.

Injured falcon aided PLATTSBURGH — An injured peregrine falcon was aided by a local woman when found r ecently at the State University of New York at Plattsbur gh campus.

Rosemary Maglienti r eportedly found the endanger ed bird which had suf fered a br oken bone, making it unable to fly.

The falcon is now inAlbany being monitored at a veterinarian’s office there before it can be released.

Legislators approve shuttle service for airport County to negotiate contract with Chattanooga-based company

PLATTSBURGH — A new shuttle service is in the works for Plattsburgh International Airport.

The Clinton County Legislatur e approved a resolution during its regular meeting March 23 that will allow for the county to negotiate a contract with Republic Parking System, of Chattanooga, Tenn.

The motion was made by Legislator Dr. Robert Heins, R-Area 10, and seconded

by Legislator Harry McManus, D-Area 1. Legislators Sara E. Rowden, D-Ar ea 4, and Jacqueline A. Walker, R-Area 8, were absent.

According to Heins, who chairs the Legislature’s Airport Committee, the need for a shuttle service has increased as the amount of parking space has grown at the property.

“We’ve reach critical mass, to be honest with you, at the airport,” said Heins.

“We’ve grown to a point wher e we’ve got to do some emergency measures to try to continue to do what we’r e doing.”

The shuttle service would be one such measure, which would be provided free for airport visitors, said Heins. The cost of the service — for which the county was authorized to contract at a cost not to exceed $21,000 a year — would be cover ed by revenue generated fr om parking fees established at the facility Mar ch 1.

Heins stated the county had alr eady collected appr oximately $59,000 in fees in the first three weeks of charging for parking.

It’s estimated the fees could result in $720,000 to $1 million collected per year.

“There’s a greater turnover out there than we thought there’d be,” Heins said, r eferring to the number of people using and paying for parking services at the airport.

That has led the Legislature to examine an expansion of airport parking facilities, which have begun to exceed their 1,250vehicle capacity.

“We r eally maxed out with the parking. Ther e r eally is no place to park,” said Heins, who added cr eating an additional lot is being eyed near the former Plattsbur gh Air For ce Base Alert Facility.

The need for more parking is expected to grow as airlines flying in and out of the airport ar e expected to incr ease their air service this month, said Heins. That has also led to an incr eased focus on providing additional Transportation Security Administration checkpoints for the facility and, as aesult, r reduce congestion within the terminal.

According to CountyAdministrator Michael E. Zurlo, the airport meets TSA criteria for a second checkpoint.

“The fact is the physical space needs to be expanded to allow for that, which would mean eliminating some of the walls and office space currently occupied by TSA,” said Zurlo, adding airport manager Thomas D. Long has been in contact with TSAre-

The project would also add an additional jet bridge to help with the loading and unloading of passengers.

The study also revealed that the number of people who use the airport has gr own steadily over the past thr ee years. This year, more than 100,000 people ar e estimated to use the facility.

“Just in the months of January and Febr uary, we have already emplaned 20,000 people,” said Heins. “That’s a 42 per cent increase over last year.”

Officials: EPA mercury rules to help Adirondack lakes

ALBANY —Green gr oups fr om the Adirondack Park ar e pleased with new federal standar ds that pr opose to limit mercury and other emissions from power plants.

The U.S. Envir onmental Protection Agency proposed the new emissions standards last week following a decision by a federal Court of Appeals in a lawsuit br ought forth by a nationwide coalition of health and environmental groups.

The pr oposed r egulations would limit the emission of mercury, arsenic and other power plant air pollutants, steps that experts say would reverse damage to Adirondack lakes and ponds.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson called the pr oposed regulations a "significant milestone" in protecting the environment from the "damaging effects of toxic air pollution."

"With the help of existing technologies, we will be able to take reasonable steps that will provide dramatic protections to our children and love ones, preventing premature deaths, heart attacks, and asthma attacks," Jackson said.

of several toxic air pollutants and are responsible for half of all mercury and acid gas emissions in the country.

The proposed EPA standards would require power plants to install state-of-the-art pollution contr ol technologies aimed at cutting harmful emissions.

Neil Woodworth is executive dir ector of the Adirondack Mountain Club, one of the many envir onmental gr oups backing the new regulations.

Woodworth said after two decades of "uncertainty ," the federal government will now have the authority to regulate toxic chemicals that he says have had a "devastating impact" on the Adirondacks.

"Because of the technology required to meet this standard, it will not only cut mercury contamination by 91 percent, it will also reduce fine particulate matter, low-level ozone and acidic precipitation," Woodworth said.

According to Woodworth, some 96 percent of Adirondack lakes alr eady exceed the EP A's maximum r ecommended mercury level.

Additionally, two-thirds of Adirondack loons carry "risky" levels of mercury.

Nason said the funds are compiled through regional drug and asset seizur es and awar ded to departments involved in specific investigations.

According to Nason, the most r ecent awar d will be used to outfit police cruisers with wireless internet capabilities.

Wake Up Call brings the sounds of pop, punk

Open auditions for independent film Tuesday at ROTA Art Gallery

PLATTSBURGH — There’s a new band in the local music scene.

The band Wake Up Call recently formed from two different bands, according to guitarist Nate Haber. Friend Pat Daly played dr ums in the band A Moment Forever and the two had always talked about starting a band. So, Daly joined with him, bringing along vocalist Jake Goddeau. Haber and bassist Ian Fisher wer e in the band My Enemy My Ally, which had broken up, leaving the two looking for “something new.”

“So, we all decided to give this a try ,” said Haber.

And, it worked. The band formed in January, brandishing a “pop/punk” sound, influenced by the different tastes in music they have, said Haber.

“We all listen to a wide range of music, basi-

cally everything fr om Robert Johnson who is a classic blues artist to Whitechapel which is a re ally heavy metal band,” he said. “W e have so many dif ferent influences that it all just gets mashed together and we use aspects from all genres of music.”

The band sets its sound apart fr om others in the ar ea by adding their own “twist to things such as br eakdowns, without scr eaming,” said Fisher.

“When we wer e all deciding what kind of band to be we decided that more than anything we wanted to appeal to as many people as possible while still enjoying it ourselves,” explained Haber.

The band’s first performance was recently at Gilligan’s Getaway.

“The crowd was great and they really got into the music which made us happy. We are actually still a really young band,” said Haber.

If it weren’t for all the gr eat people in Plattsbur gh the music scene would have never made a r evival.”

Americade signs DEC deal Deal keeps event in Lake George for 2011

andy@denpubs.com ALBANY — The popular motorcycle rally Americade will stay in Lake Georg e for 2011, according to event or ganizers, who signed an agreement March 29 with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

“We are pleased to announce that our convention has r eviewed and signed the 201 1 agreement with NYS DEC today, agreeing to pay NYS DEC $50,000 for the r ental of the Beach Road Parking lot and associated areas,” said Americade Vice Pr esident Christian Dutcher in a pr epared release. “We are delighted that the 201 1 negotiations have concluded, and since DEC stated that this framework can serve as a model for futur e years, we’r e optimistic that arrangements for 2012 and onward will be much simpler.”

On Mar ch 25, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced that the state had formed a partnership with W arren County that would allow Americade to again use the Lake Geor ge Beach, Battlefield Park and Prospect Mountain Day Use Areas for the June 2011 event.

The agreement will lead to the issuance of a “temporary r evocable permit” allowing Americade to use the state-owned lands in the village and town of Lake George.

Americade founder Bill Dutcher had asked the state to lower the permit price from the pr oposed amount of $82,000 to $50,000, or else he may move the event to Massachusetts. And that’s exactly what the state did in its new agreement.

This year ’s deal would be similar to the one in 2010 in which Americade pays entrance fees on behalf of the participants under the terms of the DEC permit.

In announcing the agreement, Bopp said the state will still help this year , but not as much as in the past because the Warren County Sheriff ’s Office will now provide most of the law enforcement help. And that enticed the DEC to lower its permit fee for this year.

“Americade is of vital economic importance to W arren County and the surr ounding communities and we have all benefitted from the r esponsiveness of DEC and its cooperation to secur e Americade’s continued presence in Lake George for years to come,” Dan Stec, Queensbury town supervisor and chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors, said in the Marc h 25 DEC press release.

When contacted in the afternoon on Mar ch 25, Americade’s Bill Dutcher said his or ganization and the DEC only had a “tacit understanding” as to the permit’s details. In an e-mail sent later in the day, Americade Vice President Christian Dutcher said his “advisors” would r eview the papers and issue “a formal release of acceptance.” That happened on March 29.

Trout season? What trout season?

Trudging back out into the cold to cover the boat for the second time this winter , all I could think about was knocking out one of Tom’s pearly whites. I know the poor guy can’t control the weather — but does he have to be so dang perky about it?

With the mercury barely br eaking the fr eezing point as I write this and more frigid weather in the for ecast, it appears the opening of this year’s trout season is more symbolic than anything else.

What a dif ference a year makes.

Last year at this time we wer e hitting the links and tr olling open water on back ponds. This year I’d need snowshoes to get to the Radisson behind my garage.

In the meantime, I made the mistake of uncovering my big boat last weekend. I bought a newer 24footer to chase lakers and salmon with but have yet to outfit it with the equipment I salvaged from my

old boat — the Laker T aker II. So, I decided to get a jump on that tedious task and accomplished a great deal last Sunday before crashing in my r ecliner next to the woodstove with a can of Genessee river water.

But before I could enjoy the first sip, smiling Tom the ever-effervescent weatherman came on the tube and happily predicted half a foot of snow on the horizon.

I peaked out the window at the sun setting behind my fully exposed boat, and slowly pulled my soggy boots back on.

Infamous T iconderoga outdoorsman and marathoner Richard Johndrown — better known in hunting cir cles as SilverrrrrrrrrrrBulletttttttttttttt — dropped me a line r ecently to let me know he had the pleasur e of scoring Robert Laver gne’s 20point buck shot last season.

For those who may have missed it, I wr ote a column in November about this buck, which Laver gne shot Nov . 6 on land along the Cedar River outside Indian Lake.

The deer had become quite well known in the ar ea, by r esidents who had spotted him wandering near town after deer season. He was easily identified by a split he had in one ear , pr esumably fr om fighting for dominance. His shed antlers had also been found, and local hunters wer e awar e of the significant antler gr owth he possessed.

Johndrow, who serves as measurer chairman for the New York State Big Buck Club, Laver gne’s non-typical sported 20 countable points with 10 non-typical points totaling 37 1/8 inches r esulting in a final score of 179 2/8. The gross score of the rack is 191-1/8. That is enough to make it the fifth largest non-typical on record taken in Essex County.

County. The buck net scored 182-0 and grossed 206-0. It is the fourth largest typical buck ever shot in New York.. The lar gest non-typical buck measured this year is a 15pointer taken by Brandon Peters in Niagara County , Johndr ow said.

That buck net scor ed 194-0 with a gross score of 203.

Hunters have until May 1 to have their bucks scor ed for inclusion in the New York State Big Buck Club.

Department of Environmental Conservation seeks waterfowl input RAY BROOK — New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens today invited hunters to submit r ecommendations to r egional Waterfowl Hunter Task Forces for the dates of the fall 2011 duck hunting seasons.

DEC will evaluate the task force recommendations in setting waterfowl seasons, which must comply with federal rules.

New York is divided into five waterfowl hunting zones: W estern, Southeastern, Northeastern, Lake Champlain, and Long Island. DEC recently appointed task forces for each zone (except Lake Champlain, see link below) to solicit r ecommendations for the fall 2011 hunting seasons, including opening and closing dates, split seasons and a special hunting weekend for youths. includes representatives from the New York State Conservation Council, established waterfowl hunting or ganizations and individual waterfowl hunters who wer e chosen to provide input from diverse points of view.

The r ecommended dates must be within federal guidelines established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). For fall 2011, DEC expects the USFWS to allow a 60day duck season, split into no more than two segments per zone, opening no earlier than Sept. 24, 2011, and closing no later than Jan. 29, 2012.

Waterfowl hunters can participate by providing duck season suggestions to any task force member on or befor e April 15, 201 1.

Comments can be pr ovided by mail, telephone or e-mail. The comment due date is important because the task for ces will pr ovide their r ecommendations in late April and DEC plans to announce tentative duck hunting season dates in June.

Input on hunting seasons for other migratory game bir ds, including Canada geese, snow geese, brant and woodcock, may be submitted also to any member of DEC's season-setting team. However , due to gr eater uncertainty about federal r egulations for those species, decisions and tentative dates will probably not be known until later in the summer.

Waterfowl seasons in the Lake Champlain Zone will continue to be set by the Vermont Fish and W ildlife Management Boar d, with input fr om DEC and waterfowl hunters in New York and Vermont. Although there is no formal task for ce for this zone, hunters can send their suggestions to any DEC seasonsetting team member.
