PLATTSBURGH — The following sentencings, furnished by the Clinton County District Attorney’s office, were recently recorded in Clinton County Court.

Frank Cody, 48, West Chazy, pleaded guilty to Class E felony DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and failure to keep right. Cody was sentenced to three weekends in jail, 5 years probation, substance abuse treatment, and to participate in a victims impact panel. His license was suspended and he was ordered to pay fines and surcharges.

Gale McElwey, 41, West Chazy, pleaded guilty to felony aggravated DWI with child and misdemeanor aggravated DWI. McElwey was sentenced to 30 days in jail, 5 years probation, 100 hours community service, and to participate in a victims impact panel.

He was ordered to install an ignition interlock device and was ordered to pay fines, surcharges and fees.

Christina Charland, 26, Sciota, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Charland was sentenced to 5 years probation and substance abuse treatment.

She was further ordered to pay fines, surcharges, restitution and a DNA sample fee.

Jeremy Monette, 21, Champlain, pleaded guilty to third-degree attempted burglary.

Monette was sentenced to 5 years probation and served an order of protection. He was further ordered to pay fines, surcharges, restitution and a DNA sample fee.

Craig Breyette, 39, Mooers, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Breyette was sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation and had his license suspended. He was further ordered to pay a DNA sample fee, crime victim fee, restitution and surcharge.

County officials report sales tax revenue down

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Sales tax revenue has been reported to be down for the second year in a row, according to local officials.

County treasurer Joseph W. Giroux said the county showed an approximately $422,000 shortfall in its budgeted $32.1 million for the 2010 year.

The shortfall, explained Giroux, means the county received less revenue than anticipated when passing their 2010-2011 budget last year. Sales tax revenue projections for January 2010 were reportedly off by $562,759, though the following months ended up resulting in a surplus. That surplus was depleted by the end of the year, with the months of October and November bringing the county more than $1 million below the amount of revenue originally projected.

“When we look at that revenue stream that’s down, it’s just about a 2-3 percent loss in revenue on just the sales tax,” said Giroux, who noted the county was down nearly 4 percent the previous year when comparing 2009 projections

to actual revenue collected.

County administrator Michael E. Zurlo said he attributes the dip in sales tax revenue collected to a combination of a sluggish economy and high unemployment rates.

“That’s less in revenue than we anticipated, but that doesn’t necessarily compute to the budget being short by that amount,” said Zurlo. “We won’t know that until we have our books audited and fully close out, which happens at the end of March.”

What has helped bring the number up to where it is, however, is the strength of the Canadian dollar, said Zurlo.

“I think that’s certainly helped us. It’s been strong for a majority of 2010,” he said. “It’s very strong right now and it’s why [Giroux] anticipates we’ve turned a corner.”

“Obviously, the stronger Canadian dollar, the more money that’s spent in Clinton County, because of our proximity to Quebec,” added Zurlo.

Giroux said the shortfall isn’t cause for taxpayers to worry, with other departments reporting expenses in below what they were budgeted, offsetting the loss.

“So, that helps,” said Giroux.

“We’re a $157 million budget and there’s $31 million in sales tax. But we also have other revenue streams like property taxes, Medicaid taxes. There’s different things, different ways to control that pot.”

“This is an opportunity that certainly will help mitigate that or offset it a little bit,” said Ettling.

Jablonski agreed, adding Schumer ’s message will most likely benefit parents and students who prepare their own tax returns versus those who have them filed by qualified professionals.

“Most families, I hope, that have their taxes professionally prepared probably are catching this ... It’s ones that prepare their own taxes that might have missed this,” said Jablonski, who applauded Schumer ’s announcement. “It’s a great opportunity and a great time of year to get this message out.”

‘Relief for Riley’ Saturday to help boy with terminal illness

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — When Ann Knight’s 11-year-old son, Riley, was diagnosed with brain stem glioma, it was something that took them both by surprise. It was also something that was found starting with the slightest symptom.

“We were eating one day and Riley got food on the right side of his mouth,” recalled Knight. “I told him to wipe his face. He told me he couldn’t feel it.”

Knight said her son had recently had his braces tightened, so she at first attributed the loss of feeling in his face to that. However, when they went downstairs, Riley had to sit down because he was feeling dizzy.

“He said, ‘I can’t walk down the stairs. I have no balance,’” recalled Knight.

Immediately, Knight took her son to the local health center, where she said they were unable to see him. The two then traveled to the emergency room at Moses Ludington Hospital, where Riley was initially diagnosed with his condition before being sent on to Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burling-

ton, Vt., for further examination.

The diagnosis was one that came as a shock to Knight and her son, who only later learned a cousin on Knight’s father ’s side died from brain tumors similar to one that has formed in Riley’s brain.

“It came completely out of left field,” Knight said of the diagnosis, which was given last August.

Over the course of the past six months, Riley has undergone radiation treatments to combat the cancerous tumor in his brain. However, Riley was recently given only nine months to live — a prognosis that was even more recently lessened to a matter of weeks.

“His tumor ’s growing, putting pressure on his brain, which is causing seizures,” explained Knight. “The worst part is watching him lose his independence.”

The boy who once was so active in sports, band, chorus and drama has been robbed of the ability to do the things he loves, said Knight. But, Riley’s spirits remain as high as they can possibly be in his condition, through the support of his family and friends.

“His older brother is amazing especially,” said Knight, referring to her

oldest son, Brandon. “He stays with Riley everyday. He just loves his brother.”

When Angela “Bubba” Gonyo of Plattsburgh heard of Riley’s condition through a mutual friend she has with Knight, she said she immediately wanted to help. Knowing the amount of travel Riley and his mother have had to do from Ticonderoga to Burlington to as far Boston, Mass., Gonyo said the least she can help is with raising money for their travel expenses.

“I was amazed that a stranger would put in so much time and effort for a child that she doesn’t know,” said Knight. “She’s amazing.”

“He’s a hero in my book,” Gonyo said of Riley. “It just kills me to see this 11-year-old boy going through what he’s going through.”

Gonyo has organized “Relief for Riley,” a benefit for this Saturday, Feb. 26, at Therapy Nightclub and Sports Lounge, 14 Margaret St., Plattsburgh, that will have a goal to raise “as much money as possible” for the Knight family.

“Whatever we can possibly do for Riley we’re going to do,” said Gonyo.

Knight said her son got a kick out of Gonyo’s idea to put a drag show on as part of a benefit for him.

“His first words were he couldn’t be-

lieve it and his next words were he couldn’t wait to see himself at a drag show,” said Knight.

Knight said Riley is hoping to make it to his benefit this Saturday, but, if he’s not feeling up to it, Gonyo said arrangements have been made to have a Web cam set up for him to view it and for people to see him.

Ecstasy smuggling attempt thwarted at border; $1.5 million worth seized by CBP ROUSES POINT — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations recently seized approximately 40 pounds of methylene-dioxymethamphetamine better known as the club-drug “ecstasy.” The seizure resulted in the arrest of a Canadian citizen.

CBP officers encountered 37-year-old David Tremblay, a Canadian citizen from Mont Tremblant, Quebec, as he applied for admission into the United States at the Rouses Point Port of Entry Jan. 31. Tremblay reportedly made a negative declaration and advised CBP he was traveling to New Jersey. Tremblay exhibited nervousness during his primary interview and had difficulty an-

swering additional questions related to his itinerary, resulting in him being referred for a secondary enforcement exam.

In secondary, an inspection was performed on the subject’s vehicle utilizing a CBP narcotics detection canine. The CBP canine alerted to the presence of a narcotic odor emanating from the floor of the vehicle storage area. CBP officers examined this area and revealed a false floor containing blue and pink pills in plastic bags.

The pills field tested positive for properties of MDMA. The bags were found to contain approximately 60,000 pills with a total weight of approximately 40 pounds.

“The ecstasy seized by CBP has a street value of approximately $1.5 million,” said Champlain Port Director Paul Mongillo.

“This significant interception of ecstasy has prevented a very dangerous drug from reaching our streets.”

Tremblay was arrested on federal charges of importation and possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance and turned over to agents from U.S. Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation and prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

ne year ago at this time Denton Publications took on the sensitive issue of Essex County’s hiring practices — more specifically, if nepotism plays a part in the process.

Through news articles and editorials, we shined light on the fact that some families seem to be better represented in the county’s hallowed halls, and that hiring practices may have played a role in that.

Or, at least, that some taxpayers seem to think so.

Specific allegations of abuse — some of which are printed above — began pouring in from readers, perhaps more than we’ve ever received about a given topic.

Apparently fearing retribution, many of these comments were posted online by anonymous authors like “disgruntled,” “seen it all” and “tired of it.”

True or untrue, county leaders seemed to take notice, and they pledged to create an ethics board to remove public perception that political or family bias exists in the county’s hiring procedures.

It now appears the county is finally poised to follow through on its promise and appoint a five-member ethics board at its March meeting.

As we did one year ago, we’d like to applaud supervisors for this initiative. At the same time, we’d like to go on record as saying the devil will most definitely be in the details if the ethics board is going to have the desired effect.

Since it will be governed by the state’s Open Meetings Law, the board, in our opinion, should be open to the press and public scrutiny whenever possible. If for nothing else, than to dispel the rumors that propagate when government exists behind closed doors.

It also must be allowed to operate without regard to political influence. A tall order in a county the size of Essex with its history of small-town power politicians and back-room

caucuses.

At the same time, county employees must be comfortable with approaching the ethics board without concern for retribution or loss of livelihood.

Those concerns are evident in the statements printed above that we received online following our coverage of potential nepotism.

In these instances, Robert Freeman of the state Committee on Open Government, said the law allows the board to enter into executive session, in the interest of an employee’s anonymity.

Then, board members must be comfortable recommending policy changes that stem from these conversations in open session — even if those recommendations directly impact friends and family of the officials they report to.

Lastly, we encourage the board to divulge to the public what others have successfully kept quiet — when a new employee is a direct relative of a county supervisor or other county official in an influential position.

We say err on the side of transparency, every time.

The fact is there is a lot of skepticism among taxpayers that the creation of this board was nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction to the press coverage that occurred a year ago.

Many feel the ethics board is simply more smoke screen and mirrors, created to appease inquiring minds — perhaps even make it easier to perpetuate questionable practices, under a system ruled by a few.

It is therefore incumbent on supervisors to prove the naysayers wrong. To make the tough changes recommended by the board in an unbiased manner, and to do it in the public eye.

Otherwise, the statements made one year ago by those who actually had a legitimate gripe will again fall on deaf ears.

And it will be back to business as usual.

Letters to the Editor The unborn are alive Abortion kills more than 42 million babies every year. Those innocent babies are living in the womb; God created these precious children with a purpose and it is not anyone’s right to take that life.

Many women think that that baby inside them isn’t alive. This in and of itself is sad. The fact that some people actually believe this makes me angry. Even in the womb the baby shows sensitivity to light, he develops fingers, toes, eye lashes, and eye lids.

Hosea 12:3 says, “And he took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God.” I love this verse because it clearly shows that the baby was alive in the womb.

Another thing that strikes me is that when teenage girls get unwanted pregnancies they turn to abortion because they think that they have no other choice: “I’m too young,” “What will everyone think of me,” “I didn’t want this to happen,” or “I didn’t mean for this to happen.” If this is the case, why did they put themselves in the position to get pregnant in the first place?

Other times women just don’t want the baby because of a birth defect or disease that he will be born with. How can anyone love that baby any less just because of a birth defect? He is still a human being, and is still created by God, who has a special plan and purpose for his life.

Just remember, you have to live with the decision to kill your own baby.

Before you take your child’s life, ask yourself this question: Can I live with this decision for the rest of my life?

Helping the United Way When I was first asked to serve on the United Way Board of Directors, I was uncertain as to what assistance this Agency provided to our local residents.

The United Way of the Adirondack Region is made up of Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. I was totally amazed to find that the fundraising done by United Way each year helps to financially assist 36 partner agencies.

These partner agencies are there to provide assistance to many residents of the communities that are struggling through economic hard times, such as working families that are seeing an increase in gas prices traveling to and from work, insurance increase, fuel costs, food expenses, etc., etc., etc.

And you have the elderly who would go without before they ask for help.

’m sure we’ve all read and watched with interest the events transpiring in the Egypt and other Middle East countries as they take to the streets to demand greater freedoms and hopefully a more promising financial future. While scary, the Pierce family had quite an experience when their planned vacation trip had trapped them in Cairo for several days while events unfolded all around them.

This article appeared last week in most of our publications, and if you didn’t get a chance to read it, please go online, take look and put yourself in their shoes. It’s one of those unique life experiences they will forever carry with them.

I thought to myself several weeks ago, given the severity of the financial woes in the United States, that we might begin to see such large protests erupt here as our government begins to tackle the decisions that must be made to correct our looming debt. As citizens of this democracy, we have always known that the freedoms we enjoy come with a heavy price. Shared sacrifice, compassion for those less fortunate, and a return to the values that made this a nation of strength, understanding and opportunity must prevail in the days ahead. If we fail to reach shared compromise, I fear the days ahead are filled with disruptive discourse when we should be focused on constructive growth. Tough choices can’t always be at the other side’s expense.

Don’t blame the Adirondack Council for delays

in the state. We urged the public to support a Constitutional Amendment that brought a new, reliable electric power supply to Tupper Lake, where blackouts had been common. We were the only private organization to do so. The amendment was approved by more than a 2-to-1 margin statewide.

In 2007, it was the Adirondack Council that proposed a series of mediation sessions to settle the remaining issues identified by the Adirondack Park Agency as obstacles to obtaining a development permit for the Adirondack Club and Resort. It was the applicants who called a halt to those sessions, despite the progress being made.

If the Council were dead set against the project, we would have no interest in mediation. We would have sought to begin the formal, court-style hearing right away. That would have ensured a long and costly review. Instead, the Council suggested informal meetings and off-the-record discussions to speed up the review

and reduce costs.

We also encouraged the applicants to seek the permits they need from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Health. This, we hoped, would save time and money for both sides by eliminating some of those 10 unresolved issues before the APA’s formal public hearings began. The applicants refused. They still don’t have those permits, so even if the APA were to approve the project today, it could take a very long time before the first shovel of dirt is turned over.

Shortly after the mediation sessions started, however, the international economy slowed to a crawl. The bottom fell out of the real estate market. In the Adirondacks, the Front Street development planned for North Creek, which connected the Ski Bowl to Gore Mountain state-run ski center, has yet to get off the ground.

Front Street received all of its permits from the APA, DEC and DOH more than two years ago. Hundreds of homes and several hotels

were approved near Route 28, but all remain unbuilt. So, don’t blame the Adirondack Council, or the Adirondack Park Agency, for delays in the permit review. Resort properties just aren’t selling right now.

The Adirondack Council has many members in Tupper Lake, all of whom are concerned for the future of the community. Two of our staff members are natives of the region and graduated from Tupper Lake schools. You know most of our staff lives full time in the Park, yet you persist in labeling us as outsiders.

Of all local publications, Denton Pubs ought to know better.

*Editor’s Note: The following is in response to our editorial about the proposed Adirondack Club & Resort published in the Feb. 19 edition of our publications. our editorial of Feb. 15 unfairly attacked the Adirondack Council for its participation in the Adirondack Park Agency’s review of the proposed Adirondack Club & Resort in Tupper Lake. The Adirondack Council has done nothing to delay the review process for the proposed 700-unit resort. In fact, we have been waiting for, and urging, the applicant to bring his final plans to the Park Agency for years now.

In the meantime, we hired a consultant to find sustainable-development grants for the community – an effort that returned nearly $1 million in community development funds directly to Tupper Lake to date.

Bidding you a fond farewell!

T

his week, my friends, will be my final Tech Talk article. The notion to write a weekly article started when I met with Denton Publications senior editor Jeremiah Papineau to discuss a college-related article he was working on. I asked about the possibility of something like Tech Talk and he immediately welcomed the idea.

The three-year experience has been both interesting and very rewarding since the start. It’s been interesting because of all the feedback from friends, colleagues and other associates. The e-mailed questions were quite varied and sometimes offered an idea for an article while the public speaking events were just cool. I met people I otherwise never would have met; know that I appreciated those opportunities.

The rewarding part came in many ways. A number of articles caused me to research something that was closely related to my role at the college learning something new in the process. Then I had to put it together using three hundred words or less. Writing an essay was never something I was ever fond of because it often took me a long time to put thoughts into words that flow well

and make sense. When starting in 2008, it was not unusual to spend three hours or more on the writing part alone. Of course, as time went on the writing part became easier just as practicing any activity usually makes one better at it.

As I say farewell my friends, I wanted to say thank you to Jeremiah for the opportunity to have a weekly voice and to all of the people who provided feedback, encouragement and other kind words. A huge thank you also goes out to my wonderful better half, Luanne, who always tolerated my weekly request to read and comment on an article before submitting it.

Bone fractures and low sodium

I

njuries from falls are a real problem for seniors.

Many seniors report that their fear of falling and possibly injuring themselves keeps them from socializing and interacting with others outside their homes, creating a serious quality-of-life issue for them.

Researchers believe that they have discovered a link between fractures from falls and a decreased level of sodium in the blood, known as hyponatremia, according to The Caregiver ’s Home Companion.

Researchers at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, studied more than 5,000 adults older than 55 to establish a baseline of sodium levels, with a follow-up evaluation to establish data on falls and fractures six years later. Eight percent of the study participants had particularly low levels of sodium, had higher levels of diabetes and were more likely to use diuretics.

This group also had a higher rate of falls than the other participants: 24 percent versus 16 percent. Interestingly, bone densities were similar for all participants, so the fractures were not attributable to osteoporosis. However, the participants with hyponatremia had much higher levels of fractures: the risk for spinal fractures was 61 percent higher in older adults with lower sodium levels, with a 39

percent greater likelihood of non-spinal fractures, such as hip fractures. Study participants with hyponatremia also exhibited a marked increase in death during the follow-up period.

Hyponatremia is a relatively common electrolyte disorder, usually resulting from kidneys retaining too much fluid. It is easily recognized and treated in hospital settings; yet non-hospitalized folks may be unaware that their sodium levels are low. Although the link between hyponatremia and fractures has not been established, the Rotterdam researchers’ findings suggest that even nonhospitalized older folks should be tested for hyponatremia and treated accordingly, as an easy way to guard against fractures and their related complications.

The basics of nurturing seeds

M

any home gardeners assume that perennials cannot be started from seed.

While, many perennials are difficult to grow from seed, there are several varieties that are no more difficult to start from seed than annual flowers or vegetable.

If you consider the many benefits of starting perennials from seed, you may find it foolish not to give it a try.

Seed is economical. You can spend hundreds of dollars purchasing the same number of plants you can grow from one seed packet. This is a great way to save money if you have a large or new garden or are on a tight budget, as many of us find ourselves on these days.

Additionally, many plants must be grown from seed because they are otherwise unobtainable or difficult to propagate any other way, and seedlings often establish better than large plants.Abundant supply also means there are plants to spare and to share.

There are some perennials that are especially easy to grow from seed. Ten plants that you may consider starting by seed include Allium (Allium spp.), Penstrum (Penstrum

spp.), Primrose (Primula spp.), Silene (Silene spp.), Pinks (Dianthus spp.), Draba (Draba spp.), Lupine (Lupinus spp.), Native Columbine (Aquilegia spp.), Wild Buckweat (Eriogonum spp.), and Cone Flower (Echinacea spp.). Since these perennials are easy to start from seed, seeds can be found at local garden centers, on-line, and in your garden catalogs.

There are a few steps to take to help ensure better success when starting seeds at home. You need to think about the right amount of light, water, fertilizer, and you need to calculate the timing of planting. If you start your seeds to early, the plants will be forced to stay in the small containers too long. This can stress the plant and cause the plant to be less healthy.

Next week, I cover seed starting basics that can be applied to these perennials, annual flowers, and vegetables.

January’s ‘Basket’ unchanged

rices remained virtually unchanged in January at $93.43, and $93.96 in December. They were up 2 percent from $91.82 in January 2010.

Prices were down on produce and meats. They remained stable in all other categories: frozen foods, canned goods, drinks, breads, cereals and grains, dairy and miscellaneous items. For the year, prices are up in all categories, with the exception of an 8 percent drop on produce.

Ten pounds of round, white potatoes dropped 31 cents on average, driving that category’s decrease. The cost of Iceberg lettuce is down 13 percent for the month, and 16 percent for the year. Red Delicious apples are up 3 percent locally, while they are averaging an increase of 35 percent nationally for the month.

In January 2010, a freeze in Florida was driving frozen orange juice prices up. The price has remained high, although it has decreased 3 percent since last month. Frozen chopped spinach is 15 percent lower than this time last year.

In the canned goods category, store brand vegetable soup in beef stock remained steady at an average of 99 cents for over two years. That product has increased in price over the past few months and now averages $1.08.

cut pork chops brought the overall price of the meat category down 3 percent this month.

Ground chuck is up 14 percent and Oscar Mayer bacon 25 percent over last year ’s prices.

In the dairy case, the price of sliced American cheese rose sharply, up an average of 24 cents for the month. Oddly, the price of whole milk is up 8 percent and skim milk down 7 percent from January 2010. Butter prices continue to moderate but are still 34 percent greater than last year.

Coffee and tea, favorite cold weather drinks, continue to go up, 3 percent and 7 percent respectively for the month; 15 percent and 8 percent for the year.

Seasonal Reminders The citrus season is at its peak and the prices are lower than in 2010. All varieties of grapes are available, and winter squash, sweet potatoes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts are plentiful and high in carotene and Vitamin C. The Market Basket Report is a bi-monthly survey of 41 commonly purchased grocery items. Four major supermarkets in the Plattsburgh area are surveyed and data is compiled and reported by the Technical Assistance Center at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

I see that there is now a plan afoot to “green-up” the county buildings. I wonder when it might occur to that somebody there who should be planning, but seems to only collect a paycheck and, if I recall, was the author, along with now gone from sight William Johnson the very sad Lewis landfill episode that the principal job of government is to maintain secure records. Now that all the police have moved away to Lewis, there is really little actual security in Elizabethtown and before more band-aids, perhaps some supervisor with vision might suggest that the county go ahead and build a new building in Lewis next to the jail and just off the northway.

And the height limitation of a building that the APA used to keep the new jail from being built next to the new courthouse? Tell them to fly a kite and see if well paid attorney manning can really cut it. Perhaps the county should look into hiring the lawyers for the farmer in Lewis who so soundly defeated the APA, a nice 10-story building in Lewis should be able to be easily filled with government employee’s and with the addition of the long promised on and off ramps on the Lincoln Pond Road onto the Northway, the commute would be a snap.

Just look at the track record of the county IDA on how it sheltered people from the Crown Point bridge fiasco, or its long-standing cozy relationship as a landlord.

Police solicitation a hoax ALBANY — The New York State Police is warning the public of a telemarketing phone scam where the callers indicate they are calling from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and request money to cover a bad debt or unpaid loan.

The callers have strong foreign accents, and represent themselves to be investigators or officers with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation or Cyber Crime Unit of the New York State Police. The callers request money, stating the money is needed to satisfy a loan, credit card, or cash advance debt owed to a collections company, usually called Advance Cash Net. The phone numbers from which these individuals are calling appear on caller ID as legitimate New York State area phone numbers. They are not. Additionally, the callers will often provide a legitimate law enforcement address in an effort to gain credibility.

The New York State Police does not engage in any kind of collections practice nor does it solicit or request money be paid regarding any unpaid debts. Recipients of unsolicited phone calls (or e-mails) should not share any personal information, such as birth dates, home addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, or other personal or financial information, without verifying it is a legitimate interest with whom they conduct business.

Reports to the New York State Police indicate these calls have been widely received New York State, as well as Colorado, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, California, and Ohio.

Female student attacked on campus PLATTSBURGH — A female student from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh recently reported she was sexually assaulted Feb. 2 by a man she didn’t know.

She reported to University Police she was assaulted while walking between Algonquin and Champlain Valley halls around 11 p.m.

According to the student, the man grabbed her by the arm and touched her breast, buttocks and pubic region through her clothings, before she was able to fight him off.

The attacker is described to be tall, white male, slight facial hair, wearing a black coat, dark-colored winter hat, jeans and work boots.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the University Police at 564-2022.

Burnell charged with forgery MOOERS — Kristin K. Burnell, 21, Altona, was arrested Feb. 17 and charged with second-degree forgery in connection to a crime reported Jan. 20.

Ticket prices expected to increase PLATTSBURGH — With increases in fuel prices, people can also expect ticket prices to be on the rise for Allegiant Air. Fuel prices are about half of the airline’s operating expenses and with fuel prices rising, ticket prices must rise as well to meet the demand.

Mayor pledges support for Trudeau Institute

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — The mayor of the village of Saranac Lake is pledging his support for Trudeau Institute as the organization struggles with a 25 percent loss in revenue.

Reports surfaced this week that Trudeau Institute is beginning to cut scientists and support staff.

The revenue loss is partially due to evaporating federal stimulus monies received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Late last month, Trudeau’s Board of Trustees opted to remain in Saranac Lake despite rumors the institute would leave as part of a long-term strategic plan.

Mayor Clyde Rabideau said he’s worried about the staffing reductions.

“We’re very concerned about those who lose their jobs,” he said. “We know that anyone who supports a family depends on a job, and we depend on people with jobs to make the community vibrant. Our hearts go out to the people affected.”

“I don’t know the severity of the layoffs, but in any event the village stands ready to assist Trudeau in any way the village can,” Rabideau added.

Rabideau was among the many elected officials who pleaded with Trudeau to stay in the Adirondacks.

He also said the village can help Trudeau with at least two projects that have the potential to improve the institute’s economic standing – a new access road and an incubator building.

Redistricting to be subject of forum Saturday

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The League of Women Voters of New York State is inviting the public to learn more about how redistricting affects their lives.

The nonpartisan coalition is hosting forums across the state to discuss the timely issue of reforming how congressional and state legislative districts lines are drawn.

On Feb. 17, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the creation of the Redistricting Reform Act of 2011, which establishes an Independent Redistricting Commission to permanently reform how congressional and state legislative districts lines are drawn in New York.

LWVNYS executive director Laura Ladd Bierman said the goal of the forums is to show how redistricting currently works and give attendees the nonpartisan information they need to decide whether they support the current process.

“The presentation is meant for people who know nothing about redistricting. We are going to run through a PowerPoint that we’ve created that explains how it works, what the problems are and what we propose as a league, for changes,” said Bierman.

According to Bierman, the way redis-

tricting is handled currently is “whoever is in power in each of the houses — the Assembly and the Senate — basically draws the line.”

“What has happened, traditionally, is the Senate has been Republican, and the Assembly has been Democrat and they both don’t really care what the other one does,” said Bierman. “So, they pass their bills, even though in the Senate they draw the line to favor the republicans and in the Assembly they draw the line to favor the Democrats.”

“When the Assembly draws the line, they’re going to put a lot of the smaller districts population-wise down by the city, so they’ll have a lot more districts down there, which is typically more Democratic,” explained Bierman. “If you look at the lines when they’re drawn by the Senate, they typically will put the smaller districts upstate, so they can have more districts upstate, which would mean more Republicans.”

Either body will also draw a line based on whether someone in the current district has challenged an incumbent legislator, said Bierman.

“If they got 46 percent of the vote in the last election, for example, there’s a line usually drawn to get that challenger out of that district,” she said. “What we say is that there’s an incumbency protection plan

It helps the incumbent and it helps the parties that are in power right now.”

The process is one that has been allowed to continue, said Bierman, however Cuomo has gone on record with his frustration for the broken system which “ has prioritized incumbency and partisan interests over democratic representation.”

Regardless of how both houses decide, if the governor finds their decisions are based on partisan politics, he has the ability to veto their decisions, which would then send the matter before the courts for an impartial decision.

“Which is something none of them really want because then it’s none of them deciding where to draw the line,” said Bierman. “We want it to be a totally independent nonpartisan plan.”

The Plattsburgh League of Women Voters will host a forum to discuss the redistricting process this Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Plattsburgh Town Office Building, 151 Banker Road, beginning at 1 p.m.

The meeting will include comments from LWVNYS legislative director Barbara Bartoletti, who will give further background on the political history of redistricting.

Olympians auctioning gear to support winter ESG

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — A group of local Olympians have teamed up to auction off gear to raise money for the Empire State Winter Games.

During a press conference in Lake Placid Thursday, biathlete Haley Johnson and alpine skier Andrew Weibrecht announced an online auction aimed at collecting funds for the local effort to host the popular sporting event.

Byrne explained that local Olympians have donated things like racing suits, jackets, skis, and more to the online auction in hopes of garnering more financial support for the Empire State Winter Games.

"We have a number of local athletes who have provided us with some of their wears – hard goods and soft goods – that they've used in previous years and in the Olympics last year to an online auction site," Byrne said. "The money raised – 100 percent of it – will go to the Empire State Winter Games. We're very excited about it."

Last fall, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced it would no longer be able to host the summer and winter games due to the state's financial constraints.

Less than 24 hours later, officials from across the Olympic region formed a coalition and saved the winter games, hosted annually in Lake Placid.

Municipalities, corporations and businesses have since stepped up to the tune of more than $90,000 to pay for the games, which begin next Friday with opening ceremonies at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena.

Johnson, a native of Lake Placid, competed in the games as a youngster – although her first appearance was not as a biathlete, but in downhill skiing.

"It's something I moved away from a little bit since I've been traveling and been on the national team," she said. "But I'm super psyched that it's coming back and it's staying – and that the communities have all

"For me, growing up, it was one more race," Johnson added.

"As a developing athlete, one more race and every experience and opportunity was really important."

Andrew Weibrecht took the bronze medal in the Super G in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

He said being able to participate in a major event like the Empire State Winter Games was important to his development – and he adds that athletes get to compete on tough, Olympic-caliber courses and at internationally-renowned venues.

The online auction is currently up and running and will continue until the end of the Empire State Games at www.empirestatewintergames.com.

Keene town councilman ticketed for deer baiting KEENE — A member of the Keene town council was ticketed for baiting deer in November of last year, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Lawrence Jaques was issued the ticket after an investigaton a month prior found that he had been hunting deer over a pre-established bait pile on Airport Road during the hunting season.

Jaques pled guilty and paid the $25 fine and $75 court surcharge on Nov. 29.

Town supervisor William Ferebee said that he was concerned over the matter, and that it would be addressed at the next town board meeting, which was held on Feb. 22.

Hilz arrested for possession of morphine, methadone MOOERS — Mark R. Hilz, 49, Ballston Spa, was arrested Feb. 18 on Wood Falls Road for an immigration check, when state police reportedly found him to be in possession of morphine and methadone.

Hilz was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony; third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a misdemeanor; and possessing a controlled substance not in its original container, a violation.

He is due back in court March 3.

Nolan arrested on charges of harassment, mischief PERU — Casey J. Nolan, 18, Peru, was arrested Feb. 17 and charged with thirddegree criminal mischief, a felony; and second-degree harassment, a violation, in connection with harassment and damaging property.

Rodarte treated after accident BEEKMANTOWN — Victoria A. Rodarte, 28, Plattsburgh, was injured and treated at CVPH Medical Center after an accident on Moffit Road, Feb. 17.

PLATTSBURGH — Low temperatures and dreary days getting you down?

According to www.webmd.com, regions where sunlight decreases during the fall and winter season, individuals can be subject to mood and health fluctuations. Lack of sunlight is linked with mood disorders such as seasonal affective disorder. Symptoms of the condition, more commonly known as SAD, include sad or anxious mood, loss of interest in habitual activities, tiredness during the day, consumption of foods high in carbohydrates, and weight gain. Although the cause of SAD is still unknown, many attribute it to a deficiency of vitamin D, which is absorbed through exposure to sunlight, and is linked to increased immune system health. Recommended treatments for SAD include counseling, antidepressants, vitamin supplements, and light therapy.

Physical and social activities may also boost one’s mood.

“It’s easy to get sad in the winter,” said Bob Fiske, owner of Nutri Shop in Plattsburgh.

“Someone that lives in Florida is getting vitamin D right from the sun, because they’re outside all the time. But in the winter up here when it’s 15 degrees outside, we’re not outside too much.”

With less exposure to sunlight and vitamin D, Fiske noted, “It’s easy to get depressed in the win-

ter, especially if you’re an older person and can’t get out.”

Although vitamin D can be absorbed in smaller amounts through foods such as milk, Fiske noted the increased sale of vitamin D during the winter season.

“It’s definitely becoming more popular,” he said, “with customers coming in and buying vitamin D.” “More and more people are becoming aware of it,” Fiske added, referring to vitamin D’s recent notoriety in the media, and recent research.

For those looking to purchase vitamin D products, Fiske recommended supplements which also include calcium, or other vitamins for better absorption.

“There’s no sense taking a vitamin if it’s not going to be absorbed anyway,” he said.

Fiske added liquid vitamins are a better form of vitamin consumption, despite a shorter shelf life. As a nutritionist and health advocate, Fiske admitted he is no expert on the amount of vitamin D one should take, noting the large amount of divergent data, and research which doesn’t take into account differing geographical locations. ”None of the research [breaks] down geographic location, which to me is one of the biggest factors in the whole thing — there’s nothing out there that I can find that says stuff like that.”

“Some researchers say we should take up to 1,000 [units of vitamin D] a day, while some say as much as 4,000,” he said.

One thing Fiske’s research has found however, is most researchers agree vitamin D is beneficial.

“There are benefits for dental health, depression, and all kinds of things,” he said. “It seems like everybody says we need to take vitamin D.” Fran Anderson of Premiere Tan & Body Center in Plattsburgh noticed a similarity.

“I see a lot of customers that come in for seasonal depression,” Anderson said.

Additionally, she said exposure to ultraviolet light helps “with vitamin D, depression,

and skin disorders.”

Ironically, Anderson does not utilize the tanning facilities she runs.

“My doctor told me my vitamin D was low,” she said. “The first thing he asked was ‘Don’t you ever get in those beds of yours?’”

Like most therapeutic treatment avenues, Anderson stressed customers “use caution,” but also acknowledged “everything has its plusses and minuses.”

One of my favorite options is berries topped with walnuts. On days that I’m hungry I may have this with two poached eggs, but on days that I’m just not up for a full meal right away, berries and nuts will do.

Now that it is winter, I buy frozen mixed berries and I always check the label to be sure that there is no added sugar. During the summer months I will purchase, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspber-

ries. I rinse them well and mix them in a big bowl so that it is easy to grab a serving when I want to.

Top with your favorite nuts, I like walnuts for their high omega-3 content. You can even top the mixture with some milk, soy milk, or almond milk to take the place of sugar loaded, refined carbohydrate, boxed cereals.

Centenarian reflects on brighter side of turning 100 years old

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Marion Biesemeyer has witnessed a lot of history in her 100 years of life and she plans to witness a lot more.

Biesemeyer — who spent most of her adult life in Keene and today resides at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh — was born Marion Hempel Feb. 22, 1911 in Germany, where she grew up and completed medical school. Though she grew up in Germany during a time of political turmoil and persecution, Biesemeyer likes to look back at the fond memories of her earlier years.

“I had a very happy youth,” said Biesemeyer, who recalled the simpler times of growing up before inventions like televisions and washing machines became common household fixtures.

“We didn’t have any,” Biesemeyer said of many of the modern conveniences seen today.

Even the automobile — then still very new to the world — was considered more a luxury than a given for families. However, that was of no importance to Biesemeyer.

“I always liked to walk,” she said. “I could outwalk the cars with the many stops they made.”

Biesemeyer said she doesn’t remember her family owning a car when she was growing up, let alone going through the rite of passage many teenagers go through today — driving the family car to practice for a driver license test.

“It cost money,” Biesemeyer said of owning a car.

“And, I think fuel was too expensive to waste on a little girl who didn’t know what she was doing,” said added, laughing.

It wasn’t until she moved to the United States several years later with her now late husband, Walter, that she owned her first automobile.

However, that wasn’t the only major change in Biesemeyer ’s life. During the beginning of the Nazi occupation of Germany in 1939, Biesemeyer and her husband, a Swiss architect, fled to France, and eventually to the United States. It was a time in her life that Biesemeyer doesn’t like to talk about but one that also saw the denial of her German medical degree because her mother was Jewish — something that wasn’t rectified until she was 90 years old.

“It was like living in another house and looking out at nothing but water,” said Biesemeyer, laughing again.

The country that seemed like another world away held much promise for Biesemeyer and her husband, who eventually settled in Keene and purchased an old house and two guest cottages on East Hill which they established as “The Mountain House.”

“I never tired of the old mountain house,” said Biesemeyer. “It stood at the end of a great meadow ... I always liked the meadow, with lots of flowers in it.”

The house doubled as both the Biesemeyer family home and as a lodging business which still exists today, run by Biesemeyer ’s son, Robert. After the unexpected death of her husband from a brain tumor in 1953, the family matriarch found herself solely operating the lodging business for a number of years. Though, it was something that didn’t feel like a business to her, said Biesemeyer ’s daughter, Anne Bailey of Plattsburgh.

“She really liked living upstairs, because there was a balcony where she had a great view,” said Bailey. “When the guests would come over from the other cottages, she would know she needed to go to the kitchen and get their meals or just come down to say hello.”

“It was an easy way to earn a little extra money and keep the house in top shape,” Biesemeyer said of running the business.

Having the mountains all around her also led her to discover a passion for skiing and mountain climbing, both of which she did well into her eighties and credits toward her longevity. And, just as she enveloped herself in the natural beauty of the Adirondacks, Biesemeyer also immersed herself in the local community, teaching French and Latin for the Keene Central School District, serving on the district’s board of education and being on the boards of directors for the local library and hospital.

“I just enjoyed it,” Biesemeyer said humbly of her service.

“She always tried to help wherever she could,” said Bailey.

Though she felt much reward from serving her community, Biesemeyer credited the love and support of her children — which also include her eldest son, Peter, who lives in Malone — for the happiness in her long life.

“I have a great family around who has watched me to make sure I don’t get into mischief. And, I could easily get into mischief,” said Biesemeyer, smiling.

Kashorek to sign copies of latest book, ‘Kin of Cain’

PLATTSBURGH — Author Douglas Kashorek of Beekmantown was so inspired by an epic poem, he felt compelled to continue the story it told hundreds of years ago.

In his latest book, “Kin of Cain,” Kashorek tells what he considers the “Christian sequel” to “Beowulf,” written by an unknown author during the Dark Ages.

“Beowulf is the early roots of fantasy and has served as inspiration for writers from Tolkien to Lawhead,” said Kashorek.

In Beowulf, he explained, a warrior of early Scandinavian tradition comes to the rescue of Hrothgar, a king, whose meadhall is nightly attacked and warriors slaughtered and eaten by a terrible monster. Kin of Cain merges Beowulf with the Bible, setting it in Silver Lake Mountain and Lyon Mountain areas during the post-Civil War and Great Depression times.

“In the tradition of the epic

hero, Beowulf alone is able to kill the monster and then takes on Grendel’s mother in their lair,” said Kashorek, “which I have made the entrance to Enoch, the city build by Cain in Nod, east of Eden, in rebellion to God’s curse on him to be a restless wanderer on the earth. Later, Beowulf battles a dragon, which, of course, I needed to honor by working biblical leviathan into Kin of Cain.”

The bard who penned Beowulf, said Kashorek, was evidently influenced by the spread of Christianity as the poem is filled with allusions to Christian themes.

“Kin of Cain follows that tradition, speaking of love, sacrifice, the consequences of sin, and our ability to choose to overcome or be overcome by life’s circumstances,” said Kashorek. “The novel seeks to explain why, according to Scripture, giants existed before and after the worldwide flood, neanderthal man, and legends such as Bigfoot.”

The band — which consists of Jordan Paolini on vocals, Justin Augusta on bass, Ian Countryman on guitar and Mark Newell on drums — started in November 2008 when the four got together to play their music in a basement on Elm Street. Ever since, the band has promoted itself as a “hard-hitting, fast-paced, progressive hardcore band” that spreads “the positive message and lifestyle that is hardcore ... while never being afraid to be real and expose the fake that surrounds us every single day.” The band’s

name, said Paolini, is symbolic of that and “the struggle for power that exists in life, as well as in this country of ours.”

“By struggling for this power, many things can go wrong and many lives can be negatively impacted, or even broken,” said Paolini. “Our band is a medium for bringing these issues to light and exposing the reality of the situations and world we are forced to deal with today.”

The band’s sound is “raw, progressive and motivational,” said Paolini, with great influence from bands like Verse, Ambush, and One King Down, among others.

“Crown of Lions has stylistically and principally blended both what we love and what we respect,” he said.

The result is an honesty in their music that shines through when they play, said Paolini.

The 232-page book took Kashorek 16 years to complete, he said, requiring him to become an English teacher and minister “in order to do justice to the subject.”

He currently serves as an adjunct writing instructor at Clinton Community College and is a regular contributor and book reviewer for Lake Champlain Weekly.

Kashorek will be signing copies of his book at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association, 31 Washington Road, this Saturday, Feb. 26, beginning at 1 p.m. First copies of the book — which has otherwise not yet been released

by American Book Publishing — will be available for purchase, with $2 from every book sold to benefit the Battle of Plattsburgh Association.

“An intense honesty that conveys that we aren’t playing music to be popular or to be anything more than what we are,” he said.

“But rather, we’re trying to inform people and expose the media-induced illusion of safety that exists in everyone’s lives at this very second.”

The band’s first performance was in March 2009 at the North Country Co-op on Bridge Street, giving the four their first taste of what it’s like to perform in the local music scene.

“We love the people that come out to shows and help to support the local music community here in Plattsburgh,” said Paolini. “Everyone that I see go to shows locally always seems excited to be there and friendly ... We always love playing locally because we know that we’ll have a great audience.”

Since their debut, Crown of Lions has played numerous shows across New York and New England, both on their own and with hundreds of other bands. The demand for their music led them to record a fivesong EP with Ethan Henry, ex-drummer of the band Freya, in mid-October 2009. It’s also led them to plan their first full-length album, to be recorded with friend Joe Cross at What Have You Records in Plattsburgh.

lose your eyes and take a deep breath. Feel a calm fall over your body. Now open your eyes and imagine the beauty you’ll encounter when you cross-country ski through the scenic wilderness of New York State.

Cross-country skiing combines a spirited workout with the tranquility of nature.

Let the blank canvas of a snowy landscape clear your mind, freeing you to flex your imagination (along with some muscles) as you glide through the forest. Whether you go alone or with friends, you’ll see how wonderful and soothing even exercise can be when set in the right atmosphere.

As varied as the people who embrace the pastime, cross-country skiing trails are found everywhere, from rail trails and parks to ski resorts and country clubs.

While there’s a thrill to making the first imprint on fresh snow, beginners usually benefit from learning on groomed trails, which have packed snow and are easier to ski on. In many areas a small fee entitles you to follow an extensive system of trails leading you through a snow-laden landscape, and most areas offer rentals and instruction as well.

Intermediate and advanced skiers, or anyone open to adventure, may prefer ungroomed trails. Ungroomed trails do present some challenges, but when the conditions are good, the opportunities are endless. Most downhill ski areas also have extensive cross-country systems, so downhill and cross-country skiers can enjoy different sports the same day or visit.

Ski centers usually offer equipment rental and other services like certified instruction, which lets you get the most out of your excursion. A one-hour class with a ski instructor provides you with the basic techniques: the classic gripping-and-gliding movement, how to turn, go down a hill and slow down.

Mt. Van Hoevenberg Olympic Nordic Center, part of the Adirondack State Park in Lake Placid, is the flagship center of Nordic skiing. It offers 31 miles of groomed trails and childcare facilities in the lodge.

So, pack a snack, wax the bottom of your skis for a good grip, step onto the snowy carpet, and hit the trails as you glide quietly into a beautiful New York winter!

urling was introduced to North America from Scotland during the French and Indian War when Scottish Highlander troops besieging Quebec spent their idle hours curling on the St. Lawrence River. The Canadians readily took to the game and today Canada is the curling capital of the world with more than one million active participants. The first U.S. curling club was established in 1831 and during the mid-1800’s curling was a regular activity on Central Park Lake in New York City. In the early 1900’s curling began to come indoors

from the lakes as permanent indoor rinks were built throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The moose population — 500 strong and growing M

y friend, Steve, is a rabid back-country skier. He also happens to be an avid horseman.

So, it was kind of a surprise he didn’t realize what animal made the tracks he found, at first glance. He was still excited when he called me the following day.

“We were skiing into Cathead Mountain, near Benson in the Silver Lake Wilderness Area,” he explained. “And, the snow was really deep for the first mile or so, until we started climbing.”

“Then, it became real easy going, with packed trails going off in all different directions. It looked like a herd of horses had come through there, and I wondered, who in the hell would be riding way up here?”

“But, when I dug down through the deep snow to the look at the tracks, it was a split hoof, with a distinct dew claw. It was the first moose tracks I’d ever seen,” he continued.

“And after looking around it was obvious moose had been feeding heavily on the saplings, breaking limbs and chewing the bark off trees.”

Much like whitetail deer will ‘yard up’ in a thick cedar swamp during the winter, moose will also gather in a ‘winter yard.’ Similar to the behavior of whitetail deer, moose will concentrate their numbers in one location for protection from predators and for ease of travel.

Moose yards are often found in dense, lowlying softwood forests located near watersheds or marshes. Conifers provide cover, diminish snow depth, offer food sources, break wind and hold heat better than open hardwoods.

Moose are the largest animal in the park and although extirpated for more than a century; they are still considered a landscape species and a icon of the Adirondacks. Since the 1980s, I’ve come across moose tracks on numerous occasions. I first found tracks along the railroad tracks in our backyard in Ray Brook, and again one morning in the fresh snow, right outside the door of our hunting camp near Scar-

face Mountain.

Since then, I’ve found plenty of tracks and watched several moose, both in the wild and in the middle of town. My first moose encounter occurred on Fish Pond in the St. Regis Canoe Area, when I observed a bull moose walking in the shallow water along the shoreline. It was a huge animal and like a first kiss, I’ll never forget the moment.

I’ve seen a number of moose since that time, crossing the highway, wallowing in a marsh or swimming in the lake. However, my closest encounter occurred in the middle of Lake Placid village in the fall of 2009.

I was hosting a German photographer on a photo safari for birds. We had just departed the local marina on Lake Placid and we were headed out of town, when I noticed a big female or “cow” moose in the garden of a local home. We stopped, of course, and as the photographer fumbled furiously through his gear to find an appropriate camera lens, I captured several images with an inexpensive point and shoot camera.

Although he owned all sorts of telescopic lens, they were too powerful to capture a moose at a distance of less than 10 yards. Sadly, he never got a shot.

When moose first began returning to New York in the early 1980s, they were considered an oddity. They typically remained rather elusive creatures until their breeding season rolled around in the fall. Back then, the wideranging creatures would usually be found in local farm pastures, chasing after cattle, with amorous intent.

At the time, moose were so unusual we gave them pet names, such as “Big Richard.” But, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, the New York State moose population is currently estimated at more than 500 animals and growing.

In towns such as Newcomb, Indian Lake, Speculator or Inlet, the sight of moose is no longer considered an unusual occurrence, especially during the early fall when bull moose will cover upwards of 75 miles of territory in

Other likely areas include the regions east of Lake George and the southern Lake Champlain Valley which are inhabited by numerous recent Vermont transplants. the search for a mate.

In fact, moose have become so common in New York State the department no longer tracks moose with radio collars, and they don’t even bother to collect reports of moose sightings. Since first reports began to trickle in back in 1980, the department has collected more than 3,000 sightings. However, the department does still conduct aerial surveys during the winter, when the budget allows.

Sadly, over the 30-plus years it has taken moose to reestablish a viable breeding population in the state, numerous animals have been involved in car accidents. Nearly 60 moose have died due to road kill, while more than 30 have been killed legally. The DEC estimates our moose population is increasing at about the same rate as Vermont’s, with an increase of about 10-15 percent per year.

Several advantageous factors can assist in the search for moose during the winter. The snow covering serves to reveal their tracks and to expose their trails. The white background also highlights their dark silhouette, which when combined with a more open forest, serves to expose the big animals more than any other time of the year.

Frozen marshes and bogs, and a suitable crust can also provide skiers or snowshoers will easy travel opportunities to cover such terrain during the winter season.

With adequate snow cover, a competent cross-country skier can cover many miles of terrain in a day’s travel, which makes it is entirely possible to cut a moose track or find the heavily trafficked trails near a ‘yard.’ If you discover moose tracks during the winter, it is very likely you can follow them back to their owner.

However, it is important to remember these big animals yard up for both safety and ease of travel. Do not approach close enough to present a threat or otherwise disturb them, for your sake and for theirs.

If you are fortunate enough to locate a moose, it is recommended you observe it from a safe distance and depart before causing any alarm.

High gas prices have more drivers carpooling to work

Gas prices have risen 14.2 percent per gallon based on last January’s gas price in upstate New York, according to data from the New York State Energy Research

and Development Authority.

However, Courtney Miller of Plattsburgh has found carpooling saves her about $80 per month on gas, since she began driving to and from her job as a teacher at Northeastern Clinton Central School in Champlain with a co-worker even just two weeks out of the month.

Each takes turns driving the 50-mile round-trip route every other week.

It’s something that not only helps your wallet, but in reducing wear and tear on your vehicle and pollution of the environment, said Miller.

“If you can do it, you should,” she said.

Though Miller carpools with a

friend, anyone can find carpoolers in their area by putting the word out at work by sending an e-mail or posting a notice, according to the Mid-American Regional Council Rideshare Guide. Simply asking friends and family if they wouldn’t mind sharing a vehicle on the way to work could be an option, as well.

Kristina Parker-Wingler, manager of the Battlefield of Plattsburgh Association, carpools with her mother twice a week to work.

“I don’t have any other staff, and I live in West Chazy,” said ParkerWingler. “My mother goes to Plattsburgh to run errands, so I ride with her.”

Parker-Wingler lives 13 miles from her job. Riding with her mother has saved her approximately $20 per week in gas. She also values the benefits carpooling has on the environment and the economy, she added.

“Every penny we save in this economy is worth it,” she said.

However, carpooling is not for everyone.

One way to find out if ridesharing will work for you is to try it, according to the MARC guide, found online at www.marc.org. The site offers carpooling tips for people interested in carpooling and recommends those new to carpooling

work out a convenient schedule, take turns driving and/or contribute to gas costs.

Don’t know how much to pay your driver? The site offers a calculator, which averages the operating costs per mile, so carpoolers know how much money to contribute to the driver each week.

Drivers don’t have to manage the high gas prices alone, said ParkerWingler. It’s just a matter of whether or not you are willing and able to share your vehicle with others.

“For every car you see on the road with one person, why not have two,” she said.

SUNY-ESF keeps Newcomb VIC open Name, mission changed at former APA center

NEWCOMB — A couple dozen people crowded the R.W. Sage Jr. Memorial Trail sign on Sept. 24, 2006. Rays of sunshine penetrated the rustling fall foliage, and the wind howled through the forest while Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) Director William Porter and Adirondack Park Agency (APA) Chairman Ross Whaley welcomed the public to the newest trail at the APA Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC).

This was a shining example of the close bond between the APA and the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF).

The VIC was built on 236 acres in the Huntington Wildlife Forest, managed by the college, which also owns and operates the AEC less than 2 miles away. Whaley is a past president of SUNY-ESF, based in Syracuse. And the man they were honoring on Sept. 24, 2006 — Richard “Dick” Sage — was the AEC’s associate director until his death in August 2002. He was the person who picked the location for the APA’s Newcomb VIC in 1985.

But has Dick Sage really left the building?

As Porter was finishing his comments at the 2006 ribbon-cutting ceremony, a small tree crashed to the ground in front of him. As they removed the tree, many nervously commented that Dick Sage was watching over them that day — the heart and soul of the Adirondack Ecological Center making his presence known at the interpretive center he helped build. The VIC opened in October 1990.

Vision for the AIC The APA transferred the building to SUNYESF on July 1, 2010 and handed over programming on Jan. 1, 2011. With the transition now complete, it’s the job of AEC Program Coordinator Paul Hai to lead the interpretive center through its new life as an ESF facility. That means a new mission and a new name.

What was once the APA Visitor Interpretive Center at Newcomb — with a focus on environmental education and visitor-information services — is now the SUNY-ESF Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC), featuring a 6,000square-foot main building and a 2,500-squarefoot classroom/garage.

“This center is not just for visitors, it’s for everybody, including residents of the Adirondack Park,” Hai said, defending the name change. Hai wanted the name communicate new ownership of the facility, and he wanted people to know that ESF is still at the interpretive center and committed to serving the public with educational programs.

Under the auspices of the Northern Forest Institute — managed by SUNY-ESF and based at the Huntington Wildlife Forest — the AIC will focus less on visitor-information services and more on interpretation. Moreover, Hai

and his crew will expand the interpretive mission beyond the natural resources of the Adirondack Park to include programs that will explore science, recreation, natural history and culture.

“We are able to consider a new suite of programs that the APA couldn't do,” Hai said.

“We have an opportunity to reach beyond nature … There are many complex issues in the Adirondack Park, and we want to offer programs to address that complexity.”

Through school field trips, workshops, conferences, programs and special events, the AIC will continue to offer public programming and serve upwards of 30,000 people a year. Yet the flavor of the programs will be more diversified. Regular programs such as bird walks, packbasket workshops and the summer Huntington Lecture Series will also be teamed with new programs such as a professional development series, gardening series, fly fishing workshops, a “Working Forests Working for You” series, a fall series on animal species that are harvested during hunting season, and a trapping program.

The Adirondack Park Institute — the friends group of the two VICs since 1989 — will continue to offer programs there as well.

In addition, the 3.6-mile trail system has remained open throughout the transition from the APA to SUNY-ESF. The hiking trails are open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter. People can borrow the AIC’s snowshoes for free. And there is a connector trail from the Sage Trail to the Great Camp Santanoni trail.

The ownership transition was fairly seamless. Unlike the transfer of the APA’s Paul Smiths VIC to Paul Smith’s College, a private not-for-profit institution, the Newcomb VIC was transferred from state agency to a state college. There was no need to de-accession state-owned property and move out like the APA was required to do in Paul Smiths. In Newcomb, it was literally a turn-key exchange of the building on July 1, 2010, with all its assets intact, including exhibits and educational tools.

“We were really fortunate with our partnership with the APA,” Hai said.

The AIC is also expected to help the college’s efforts to establish a work study program, which they plan to implement this year.

Challenges The biggest challenge for Hai during the ownership transition was the quick turnaround and the unfunded accession of new property.

“We were getting this jewel (in less than six months) but with no funding,” Hai said, adding that the college is looking for ways to pay staff and keep the doors open “to make sure we can keep the ball moving forward.”

Due to a “substantial grant” from a private foundation, SUNY-ESF will be able to hire a full-time position for two years to help Hai create and deliver programs at the AIC. In addition, Hai is trying to get funding for a oneyear full-time naturalist at the AIC. He hopes to have both positions in place by summer.

Hai is no stranger to the interpretive center.

He began working for SUNY-ESF in 2000, moved to Newcomb in 2003 to assume his current title, and took over program coordinating duties for the NFI in 2008. He has led educational programs at the center since 2003.

The AIC is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and the trails are open from dawn to dusk daily. Admission is free.

A welcome addition Hai is also the program coordinator for the Northern Forest Institute for Conservation Education and Leadership Training (NFI) and now splits his time between the Adirondack Interpretive Center and the Adirondack Ecological Center. The AEC is the college’s research component at the Huntington Wildlife Forest, and the NFI is the education and outreach component. The NFI — formed in 2008 — uses several buildings to serve its constituents: the Masten House, the Carriage House, the Arbutus Great Camp and the AIC. Having the AIC to serve as the Institute’s public venue is just what the NFI needed, according to Hai. “It is a great piece of the puzzle,” Hai said.

The NFI is a working partnership between SUNY-ESF, Open Space Institute, state Department of Environmental Conservation, Adirondack Park Agency, Northern Forest Center, Adirondack Wild, Purdue University’s Department of Organizational Leadership and others. The program has three main compo-
