‘North Country Biggest Loser’ organizers are looking for you!

PLATTSBURGH — These days, being a “loser” can be considered a good thing — especially when it comes to losing weight and getting healthy.

That’s why the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department and the Plattsburgh chapter of the American Heart Association have teamed up to host the first North Country Biggest Loser weight loss program. The two entities have joined together to find 10 people willing to make a commitment to make lifestyle changes and work with a personal trainer for four months beginning Monday, March 1.

Faith Osborne Long, regional director of the American Heart Association, said the program will be offered at the City Recreation Center at no cost to participants. The recreation department is donating a fourmonth membership in an effort to motivate people who may have used cost as a reason not to exercise. “[The participants] don’t have to pay for a membership, so we’re really looking for peo-

ple with a lot of motivation, people who will really stick with it through mid-July,” said Osborne Long.

The program will be similar to the popular NBC television series, “The Biggest Loser,” which it’s modeled after, said Osborne Long — with a few exceptions.

“Our program isn’t going to be as competitive,” she said. “We won’t be voting people off. The 10 people who participate, we’re planning they’re going to make it to the end.

We’re going to look at how they did as a group because, really, we want them to be supportive of each other.”

North Country Biggest Loser also won’t require participants to move to a fitness ranch for several weeks like the television show.

Rather, the program will require attendance at two-hour workout sessions with trainer Mary Duprey Monday and Thursday evenings, as well as a commitment by participants to workout on their own time. Mayor’s Cup planning begins, many events to return this summer

PLATTSBURGH — Though there’s still snow on the ground, planning for the annual summer Mayor ’s Cup celebration is in full swing.

Representatives from the Sunrise Rotary Club and City Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak announced the nonprofit organization and the city will be taking a more unified approach to hosting the event, now in its 33rd year.

Historically, the two entities have been responsible for hosting their own Mayor ’s Cup events, which led to some confusion, said Sunrise Rotary member and Mayor ’s Cup Committee co-chair Dr. Jake DeSnyder.

“There were two different events, two different projects going on, two different fundraisers,” he said. “So, we’ve made it more unified this year

and we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback.”

The basic framework of the threeday event will remain the same, with the return of the Boat Parade of Lights starting at the Lake Champlain waterfront at Wilcox Dock the evening of Thursday, July 8. Last year ’s boat parade drew approximately 30 entrees and has become a fixture with Mayor ’s Cup, said DeSnyder.

“The idea is for it to be just a fun event, decorate the boats and have what’s turned out to be a very nice evening parade,” he said.

This year, Kasprzak will serve as one of the three judges for the event, which will include new categories for smallest boat and boat that has come the farthest to participate in the event.

Every picture tells a story ... of Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH — If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts is a library for Plattsburgh.

Since 2002, the center has been in possession of nearly 200 photos of people and places around Plattsburgh from throughout the 20th century.

In 2002, a student at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, Derek Beneke-Bove, was working on his senior thesis which focused on pictures of people and places in the area.

“He got a lot of his information from the library at Plattsburgh,” explained NCCCA executive director Susan R. Daul. “A lot of the prints were done out of books. Some were donated from people around town.”

Daul explained Beneke-Bove donated the photographs to the art center, where they have been stored for the last eight years.

Now that NCCCA has moved into the federal building, across from their old location on Brinkerhoff Street, they have the space to bring out the photographs from Beneke-Bove’s research.

“In the other building we didn’t have a place to store a permanent collection, visually,” said Daul. “So this will go eventually in our community room.”

Until it is placed in the permanent collection, the exhibit will be hung in the main gallery of the center, from now until March 5.

The exhibit, titled “Remember When: A Photographic Journey of Plattsburgh in the 1900s,” has an estimated 60 photographs which have been identified in some way, including 59500

recognition of the piece,” she explained. “Who’s in the piece, what part of town it was in and we can get that finished.”

Daul also hopes the collection will get people excited about Plattsburgh’s past.

“Older people that will come in here will reminisce,” she said. “They’ll have stories to go along with all these photos. And those are the kinds of things that we want everybody to remember.”

For the younger people who come in to see the collection, Daul said she anticipates them not being able to recognize many of the places in the photos, as they have changed quite a bit in recent years.

“So that will be a learning experience for them,” Daul explained. “I’m really excited about it. You have to have part of your history looming so people can talk about it and experience it together.”

The current exhibit shows just how much the art center can now offer in their new space.

only enough space for one gallery at a time and one room for classes. The new building, located at 23 Brinkerhoff St., has 15,000 square feet, with three floors of classrooms.

“It’s fabulous. The ideas are endless,” Daul said.

With the new space, she added the center can now consider bringing in traveling exhibits.

Daul explained museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art have traveling exhibitions, which can take years to get and require certain lighting, square footage, and money.

“As you write the grants to get these traveling shows, you [have] to make sure you’ve got enough space to do it,” she said. “And we will have that now.”

The center will also receive help from an architect from New York City, who Daul hopes will be coming to the area by the end of the month.

After being one of only two places in the state to receive an award from the New York Multi-Arts Centers Consortium, Daul said the architect, who specializes in galleries and cultural centers, will draw out blueprints of how the center could be better spaced out.

“He will renovate in blueprints so that we can then go for the grants to make the building greener, to make it flow better, to get rid of some of these walls that don’t flow well,” she explained. “Open up the classroom spaces and artist residencies, get our other fire escape going.”

Although NCCCA currently owns the entire building, they aren’t able to utilize all of it, because they need to come up to code, which the architect can help with.

As the center becomes settled in the new building, Daul is already anticipating how many more events will be able to take place there.

“While say pottery and dance may be going on downstairs, we’ve got Kindermusik and art going on upstairs,” she said. “We’ve got some artist in residents that are working on some workshops and some private work somewhere else. So we’ve got enough space to make all that happen.”

Church’s role in Anti-Slavery Movement to be recognized Interpretive panel dedication slated for Feb. 16

PLATTSBURGH — An historic occasion in its own right will recognize the historic significance of Plattsburgh in the Anti-Slavery Movement.

The North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association will join with the leadership of the First Presbyterian Church Tuesday, Feb. 16, to dedicate Plattsburgh’s first interpretive panel celebrating the church’s role in the Anti-Slavery Movement of the 19th century.

NCURHA president Don Papson said the issue of bringing an end to slavery in the United States was a divisive issue by 1837. First Presbyterian Church trustee Gen. Benjamin Mooers circulated a petition in the spring of that year against abolitionists meeting anywhere in Plattsburgh. Mooers wasn’t alone — some of Clinton County’s wealthiest and most influential citizens were among the church’s founding members, with several owning slaves before New York abolished slavery in 1827.

The abolitionists were denied use of widow Sperry’s Meeting Hall on Broad Street, the Methodist Church, and the

Presbyterian Church. Emotions ran high on both sides of the issue and it wasn’t until August 1837 when antagonism against the abolitionists had “subsided to a degree in Plattsburgh,” and the Clinton County Anti-Slavery Society was allowed to hold their first annual meeting in the First Presbyterian Church.

“What’s important for people to know is the courage they exhibited here. It’s not easy to be against what everybody else is standing for,” he said.

Papson said the church’s role in the Anti-Slavery Movement wasn’t known until after it was uncovered a few years ago in research conducted of the Underground Railroad’s history in the region.

“This area between Albany and Montreal, the Champlain line of the Underground Railroad, was the least researched of all the routes of the Underground Railroad in New York,” said Papson. “It’s a history that members of the church didn’t even know. It opens up a whole chapter of our history we didn’t know anything about.”

Children’s ski team helps Haiti relief effort Kids collects $2,000 for Doctors Without Borders

The Beartown Ski Team hit the slopes last weekend to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, an organization helping Haiti following a Jan. 12 earthquake.

BEEKMANTOWN — The catastrophic earthquake that claimed the lives of thousands in Haiti last month has compelled children of the North Country to help the Caribbean nation.

The Beartown Ski Team, a group of young skiing enthusiasts ranging in age from 5-12 years old, met on the slopes of the Beartown Ski Area Jan. 31 for a special event to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, the international medical relief organization helping in the wake of the Jan. 12 quake.

Michael Collin, head coach of the Beartown Ski Team, said he wanted to organize an event that would help the Haiti relief effort, but be something that would interest the children of his team, as well.

“I came up with the idea of having a ski-athon to help raise money for Haiti,” said Collin. “The kids went out and got pledges for 10 cents a run or whatever they could

get from their parents, friends, teachers.”

“It gave them some focus and I think they’re excited,” Collin added as he stood at base of the hill at the Beartown Ski Area, watching the children line up for the event.

Jeremy Muise, a third-grader at Seton Academy in Plattsburgh, was excited as he made his way to the hill for his first of 40 runs he planned to make for the day.

“We’re raising money for Haiti by how man runs we can do,” explained Muise. “So, if someone says they’ll give us 25 cents per run and we do 40, we’ll make $10 for Haiti.”

Muise said he had collected $90 in pledges for his participation, which he said was a result of asking a lot of people.

“I ran around the whole neighborhood,” said an enthusiastic Muise, smiling from ear to ear. “This feels pretty good.”

Jacob Schiff, a six-year veteran of the slopes at age 9, said he was glad

to be able to help Haiti by doing something he loved.

“It makes me feel really, really good,” said the Saranac Elementary School second-grader. “I think it’s really nice that we’re helping Haiti.”

Tenzin Dorjee, a fifth-grader at Peru Intermediate School, said when she learned of the benefit, she simply “wanted to do it.”

“I feel good,” Dorjee said of raising money for Haiti, “because they need help. I felt really sad for them because Haiti’s a really poor country.”

Marcie Everleth, who also coaches the team, said the event — which raised an estimated $2,000 — was a great opportunity for the team to get recognition and to help those in need.

“It’s great to know these kids have what it takes to be good citizens,” said Everleth. “They make Beartown proud.”

Many of the common issues women face can be addressed through lifting weights: Body fat, stress, weakness, insomnia, osteoporosis, poor balance, etc. Before you embark on a weight training program it is important to get your doctors approval and speak with a certified personal trainer to learn proper form and technique.

Also to discuss any injuries or other medical issues you may have because certain exercises may not be appropriate for you. Your trainer would be able to offer you other options.

You really don’t need a lot of fancy equipment or expensive gym memberships to train with weights. All you really need are a couple pair of hand weights to get you started. It will most likely take you a couple times to realize what weight you should be using for each exercise, but you want to make sure the weight is heavy enough and that it is not too easy. The object is to lift weights heavy enough to build muscle, which in turn will speed up your metabolism and burn more fat.

Weight training is a weight bearing activity which with consistency over time — at least six months — you will begin to increase your bone density

which helps to prevent osteoporosis.

Many women report after weight training they get a better night sleep. It can also be a great stress reliever taking your mind off other things while you are focusing on breathing, proper form, and technique. I have seen the confidence level in many of my women clients improve immensely even after a couple weeks of weight training, three times a week.

I have developed a program specifically to meet the needs of women called “Women on Weights” it is held at the CVPH Wellness Center at PARC. Sign up soon because space is limited.

There will be three sessions starting in March, each meeting once a week for one hour — Mondays at 7:30 a.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.

PLATTSBURGH — The Rehabilitation Services Staff of CVPH Medical Center has been recognized for excellent service based on patient evaluations. People and parks to join at eco-fair

hrough research, it has been proven parks and other greenspaces can provide a positive impact in ones life. Dr. Christopher Lemieux, hopes people will utilize Point au Roche State Park for that reason.

Lemieux, who received his doctorate in Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo in Canada, participated in the Canada - U.S. Fulbright Program, a “bi-national program of educational exchange.”

“I applied for [the Fulbright program] because I do work on parks and protected areas and climate change,” Lemieux explained. “It basically provides an opportunity for someone like myself to go study and learn in the U.S. and just learn about different systems that are going on in the U.S.” While studying at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh last year during the exchange, Lemieux rented out a cottage on Point au Roche Road.

“I was literally right beside the state park,” he explained. “I didn’t know anybody in Plattsburgh so I was spending quite a bit of time hiking.”

During his stay in Point au Roche, Lemieux received an e-mail from the Fulbright program about a new EcoLeadership grant that was being offered.

“It provided an opportunity for people who were awarded a Fulbright and were on an exchange either in Canada or the U.S. ... to essentially apply for this Eco-Leadership grant,” he explained. “Basically it’s a way that people like myself who are living in another are and another community to basically give back to the community.”

Since Lemieux was spending so much time at the park, he made contact with the Friends of Point au Roche State Park in October to see if they may be interested in partnering up for the grant.

The friends and Lemieux learned in the beginning of November they were one of only eight groups to receive a $3,700 grant, out of nearly 50 who applied.

From there the friends and Lemieux decided to have the Healthy Parks, Healthy People Eco-Fair, which will be

“We just wanted to get the message out there the role that protective areas play in a community,” Lemieux explained. “They provide spaces for people to participate in healthy activities.”

“You can go hiking, you can ride your bike in that park. You can go kayaking,” he added. “It’s a rather large park so it also protects a significant amount of bio-diversity. It just plays an important role in the community and I guess that’s not appreciated enough.”

To make the eco-fair a success, Mary Simmers, president of the Friends of Point au Roche State Park, is hoping various organizations will step forward to provide environmental awareness to the community.

Currently the friends have sent out invitations to groups such as Cornell Cooperative Extension, Plattsburgh Green Committee, Lake Champlain Basin Program, and Department of Environmental Conservation.

“The idea [is] to try to engage as much of the community as possible in ecological aspects of the world,” Sim-

mers said.

Along with demonstrations from the participating organizations, she is also hoping to have boat safety, bike safety, and fire safety demos for children and adults. “[We] hope to incorporate anything that really has to do with healthy aspects at the park and for people,” added Simmers. “A healthy park can relate to healthy people.”

The friends are still looking for more organizations to sign up for the ecofair, which will be held May 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are hoping for groups to bring a display which educates attendees about what the group offers, as well as a demonstration.

Nonprofit groups will have a table free of charge, while nonprofits are asked to pay $15 to cover expenses.

Amped for the Vamp

en Year Vamp has been drawn to Plattsburgh from the start.

The high-energy Albanybased rock band has developed quite a following here since their first gig at the Naked Turtle in the summer of 2007.

“I think we were just looking to get into some new areas and a fan suggested Plattsburgh, so, we just Googled bars/clubs in the area and were fortunate enough to get booked at the Turtle,” said lead vocalist and guitarist Debbie Gabrione.

Since then, Gabrione has stood center stage at performances at the Naked Turtle and Olive Ridley’s belting out lyrics to originals and covers, joined by her bandmates — Mark Rose on rhythm guitar, Tim Keenan on bass, Andrew Foster on lead guitar, Gregory Nash on drums and Bill Ketzer on vocals, percussion and keyboards.

What’s kept the band coming back?

“Definitely the people,” said Gabrione. “The people in Plattsburgh just know how to relax and have fun. They seem to really love live music, they know how to enjoy it and are very kind.”

Gabrione said Ten Year Vamp has made “many friends in Plattsburgh” and always has a great time. In many cities the band plays, people aren’t as friendly as they are in Plattsburgh, she said.

“They’re more into their outfit than truly enjoying the band,” she said. “In Plattsburgh, the crowd is just always down for a great time.”

The band’s following, Gabrione believes, comes from not just the music they perform, but “the energy, the personality, the confidence and the talent” they bring.

“Often times, if a band is high-energy and jumping around, the musical integrity is compromised and the band will make tons of mistakes or the band will stand still and nail the music, but they’ll be boring to watch,” she said.

“We’re able to deliver ‘A’ caliber music and put on a great show, and have fun with it,” she said.

The band has been performing since 2003, when it started as an acoustic duo between Gabrione and Rose. Since the band officially formed, they’ve received much attention, including being voted best Rock Band five years in a row in Metroland, the Capital District’s weekly entertainment magazine. Fastforward to today and the band looks back on a career that’s shared the stages with the likes of Hoobastank, Drowning Pool, Fuel, Nickelback, Ludacris and many other acts well-known in the music industry.

The band’s most recent album, “Don’t Act Like You Know Me,” which is available on iTunes for download, has been ranked No. 1 in many 2009 year-end charts.

“It’s been selling really well and getting a lot of attention,” said Gabrione.

As for what’s in store for Ten Year

Vamp, Gabrione said there’s “always something new and exciting going on.”

The band is currently working with Arizona-based media agency Static Management on a summer college tour, print interviews with several magazines and a live unplugged concert broadcast in early April.

The band also has an audition coming up in March with “a big time music manager,” said Gabrione, and is considering a contract proposal received from a label that operates under Warner Bros.

Ten Year Vamp will also be filming a music video in the coming months for its song “Pleasures (That I Call Mine),” which Gabrione said will be “very sexy.” “[The song] is about owning your own sexuality and not denying your desires,” she said. “So, you can imagine what we have planned for that.”

“Myspace, Facebook and Twitter are all good ways to do it. We update those pages every day,” she said.

The band also posts regular blogs on its Web site, www.tenyearvamp.com, where fans can also sign up for a weekly e-mail update and join their “street team.”

“The street team allows people to get involved with all the behind-the-scenes stuff we have going on,” said Gabrione, “and even offers ‘prizes’ to anyone who does a good job with helping us.”

Punki’s seeing red for American Heart Month

PLATTSBURGH — When Paula Ashline gets passionate about a cause, she sticks with it.

That’s why, when the month of February was approaching — which is nationally recognized as American Heart Month — she wanted to do something to help promote it where she works.

Ashline, a hair stylist at Punki’s Shear Perfection, wanted the salon to help raise money for the American Heart Association, so she talked with owner Elizabeth “Punki” Duhaime, and she was all for it, Ashline said.

“When I asked Punki about it, she said ‘Go for it,’” said Ashline.

Immediately, Ashline looked into what she could do to help the AHA, and found the salon could sell paper hearts and Go Red for Women pins. The idea skyrocketed in the first week of February, with dozens of hearts and pins already sold.

Though Go Red for Women Day last Friday focused on raising awareness of heart disease and stroke in women, Ashline said she’s put an emphasis on Punki’s cam-

paign being about educating all people about the importance of heart health. As the mother of a grown son with a heart condition known as aortic stenosis, Ashline said she wants to do whatever she can to increase support for all who have a heart condition.

“It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s men or women,” she said. “I want us to support everyone.”

This isn’t the first community-minded endeavor to come from Punki’s. Most recently, the salon hosted a fundraiser in October selling ribbons in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. That effort collected more than $500 for the Treasure Chests, a local team that competed in the annual Northeastern New York Race for the Cure, which benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

“These kinds of things are important to us,” said Ashline. “That’s why we do them.”

During the month of February, paper hearts are available at the salon for a $1 donation each. Those purchasing hearts may sign their name or the name of a loved one on the heart and they will be hung in the salon. Go Red for Women pins are also available for a $5 donation.

The salon is also offering to anyone who

purchases a CHI or Redken product that’s red a chance to win one of two massage sessions by Erin Tate. The drawing will be held Friday, Feb. 26.

keep track of their eating habits and work with dietician Ann Watts to see what improvements can be made in regard to nutrition.

“Right from the very beginning, we’re going to be asking them to keep track of what they eat and when they eat it. That way, we can work with them individually,” said Osborne Long. “It’ll be important to look at all those factors because, truly, we want people to stick with this and make the commitment.”

Steve Peters, the city’s superintendent of recreation, said the program is “a really great opportunity,” especially considering some alarming statistics out there.

Fifty-six percent of Clinton County adults and 43 percent of children ages 2-19, he said, are considered “at risk” or overweight.

“Those are really big numbers,” said Peters.

Though in line with the national average, Peters said that number still presents a challenge to be overcome.

“With today’s lifestyles, it’s a really big challenge to be motivated

to get out there and do things,” he said. “We’re hoping this structure will help people recognize the benefits of healthy activities and then be able to capitalize on that and be a little bit healthier because of it.”

The support system the program will focus on — rather than offering prizes at the end like the television show — will hopefully be all the motivation participants will need, said Osborne Long.

“What we plan to do is recognize the group as part of Mayor ’s Cup activities in July, possibly introducing them and announcing how much they lost as a group, recognizing all of them for their hard work,” she said. “What we’re really looking for is people to make lifestyle changes, making changes in their eating habits, their exercise routine — really how they approach each day.”

“We can’t pull people off the couch to do it,” said Peters. “There has to be the desire, a passion within, and this is really the vehicle, the mechanism to help people take that first step.”

And, that first step is filling out an application to be in the pro-

gram, said Peters. Candidates will be required to fill out a 14-page application which asks for a detailed medical history and other information necessary for program coordinators to know before a person is allowed to participate. A physician’s release will also be required.

Though there are only 10 spots available — open to people in or out of the city — there will also be a separate walking club for people with smaller weight loss goals that will run congruently with North Country Biggest Loser.

“That will allow people to get together with an aspect of camaraderie,” said Peters. “And, a lot of people need that. Motivation can be tough for people sometimes and that’s the same if you’re overweight or not.”

Applications for North Country Biggest Loser may be picked at the City Recreation Center, 52 U.S. Oval, and must be turned in by Monday, Feb. 22.

Though planning for Mayor ’s Cup is in its preliminary stages, one local act has been booked. Glass Onion will perform on the downtown waterfront July 10. Other acts are in the process of being booked, said Kasprzak.

The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts is once again teaming up with Mayor ’s Cup organizers to host events including a “See Food” sculpture contest, sponsored by CVPH Medical Center. The contest will involve teams from local schools, organization and businesses as well as individuals collecting canned goods to be positioned into sculptures. Following the contest, the food will be donated to local food pantries.

“We’re hoping that will be a nice addition and I’m sure it will,” said DeSnyder.

Returning events other than the boat parade are expected to be part of the celebration once again including a 5-kilometer walk/run, the CVPH Mountain to Lake Bike Ride, and, of course, the Mayor ’s Cup Regatta.

The key this year to the continued success of the event is increased cooperation, said the mayor.

“We’re all working together to do this, which is really important for the city of Plattsburgh, downtown and the community,” said Kasprzak.

“That, to us, is a very important change this year,” said DeSnyder.
