Bridal show coming to Rainbow Jan. 30 jeremiah@denpubs.com ALTONA — If you’re a brideto-be unsure of what dress to choose, a soon-to-be groom looking for the perfect tux or a couple simply planning your nuptials, there’s an event with your name all over it.

The annual North Country Bridal Expo will return to the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall Sunday, Jan. 30, offering a little of everything for those planning their big day.

Hannah Emond and Kathy Spaulding, owners of The Dressing Room, Malone, are coordinating the fashion show portion of the event again this year and each are looking forward to the affair.

The fashion show — which will be presented in both of the expo’s two sessions — will once again be paired with booths hosted by dozens of wedding-related businesses and services.

“The expo will answer a lot of questions people may have because they can go and talk to each individual vendor,” said Emond.

Wedding photographers, disc jockey services, florists, jewelers and every kind of business in between will be represented one way or another, said Emond, which she feels adds to the popularity of the event.

“It’s just a nice way to get it done in one stop,” she said.

The fashions that will be on display are also part of the main attraction, said Spaulding.

“People can expect to see designers such as Maggie Sottero, Alfred Angelo, Casa Blanca,” she said. “And, for men’s tuxedos we’ll have Jim’s Formal Wear, Sarno and Son, and Tuxedo Junction.”

“We carry all the top designers,” she added.

“People can expect to see just about any wedding vendor they’ll want to see and a really good fashion show showing them all the latest designs from New York City and Chicago,” said Emond.

Even though the hot wedding season in the North Country is fall, it doesn’t mean brides- and grooms-to-be should wait until

then to plan their wedding, added Emond.

“It takes quite a while to plan a wedding,” she said. “Wedding dresses can even take four to six months to come in. So, it’s never too early to shop around, even if you’re just planing a 2012 wedding. Businesses book up fast.”

The North Country Bridal Expo will begin with a session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the first fashion show at 11:45 a.m. The second session will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m., with the second fashion show starting at 3:15 p.m.

The event will consist of numerous giveaways, including jewelry from Perrywinkle’s Fine Jewelry.

Admission will be $5. Advanced tickets will be sold at Hairstyles Unlimited in Chazy, The Dressing Room in Malone, Perrywinkle’s in Plattsburgh, and the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall in Altona.

Proceeds will benefit the North Country Regional Traumatic Brain Injury Center.

‘The Accessibility Project’ needs your photographs

sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Debra Buell has lived her life from a wheelchair for the last 20 years. And, it’s been a life which has been made more difficult with poor handicap accessibility.

Buell, who was diagnosed with lupus in 1984, is currently working with the North Country Center for Independence as an independent advocate to help make people aware of the difficulties those with disabilities face.

“I’ve been pushed over, fallen on, broke a guy’s foot when he walked in front of me going into a post office in New York City,” she said.

“The everyday assault on your senses for a disabled person is overwhelming. Because nobody can imagine it until they have to deal with it.”

To change this, Buell is working with NCCI and anyone else interested in helping, to put together a video of problem areas in Plattsburgh and the surrounding towns.

“I’ve only surveyed 111 businesses so far,” Buell explained. “But of them, 32 of them are lawyers and are not accessible.”

“They should know better, she added. “They know the law.”

However, Buell is hoping people will submit photos of areas that may not be handicap-accessible, or are considered accessible, but a wheelchair still wouldn’t be able to get through.

“If you’re looking down and you see a whole bunch of big holes, cracks ... that’s going to do terrible damage to your chair, or your body,” said Buell. “If you’re in a manual wheelchair and you try to go down one of those, you’ll tip.”

Buell is planning on gathering the photos and hopes to put together a video in the near future and post it to YouTube to help bring awareness to the problem.

The project, known as “The Accessibility Project,” will also be taken into the elementary

schools where youngsters, who will be referred to as “Disability Detectives,” will learn in a creative way what to look for on the streets.

“I believe in the power of kids and that’s why I think kids will help us in this endeavor probably more than anybody else in getting adults to understand the problem. We’re going to kind of play off of Sting’s old song, ‘Every Step You Take, Every Move You Make,’” Buell said.

Buell is also gathering similar information in Albany and New York City to show the problem is statewide.

“We have math geniuses at MIT, some friends of mine that have come up with a formula, an algorithm, where they can take a small city, a mid-size city and a big city and put this all together and come up with a pretty accurate picture of how accessibility is in New York State,” she explained. “In three to five years from now, we’ll have a picture and I think it’s going to be a sad picture.”

The information gathered will also help those who aren’t disabled.

“Universal accessibility is good for everybody,” said Buell. “Moms with strollers, they have the same issues that people in wheelchairs have. If you’ve got a stroller and you’ve got one or two kids in it and you’re trying to go down the street and you’ve got a six-inch or a fourinch [curb], it doesn’t feel safe. Moms will do it, but they have to lift a lot or go backwards down it so the baby doesn’t get jostled too much.”

Buell said she is hoping businesses will also step up to make their stores and offices more accessible.

“There is a lot of money out there and they would be adding customers to their business,” she said.

he following workout is a beginner workout that can also be used by the experienced exerciser as a warm up or just to switch things up a bit. Remember to get approval from your doctor if you are just getting started with an exercise program, and to get the help of a certified personal trainer if you are not sure how to execute an exercise with proper form and technique. This workout uses your bodyweight only, so no equipment is needed, and can be done anytime, anywhere.

First, warm up for 5 minutes.

Perform 12 repetitions of each exercise in circuit form (move from one exercise to the next with little rest) Repeat 1-2 more times as you progress.

Core: Supine Draw-in Marching — Lie on your back with your knees bent, keep your feet flat on the floor and your toes pointing straight ahead. Gently draw in your navel toward your spine and contract your glutes. Slowly lift one foot off the floor with control, hold in the air for a few seconds and lower your foot back to the floor. Repeat with the other foot.

Balance: Single Leg Balance Reach — Start by standing up nice and tall with your hands on your hips. Toes should be facing forward. Engage your core and balance on one foot. With the other leg lift the knee and extend the leg forward, return to start.

Resistance: Chest: Incline Push Ups — Place your hands on the wall or an elevated object like a bench.

Your lower body should be aligned with your upper body.

Engage your core bringing your chest toward the wall, keep your chin slightly tucked but keep your neck relaxed. Push yourself back to the starting position.

Back: Floor Cobra — Lie on your stomach with your arms extended alongside your body, palms facing the floor. Draw in your navel, contract your glutes and pinch your shoulder blades together. Next, lift your chest and hands off the floor at the same time, keeping your

arms straight. Hold the top position for two seconds.

Slowly lower yourself down to the starting position.

Legs: Single Leg Squat — Stand with feet straight and hipwidth apart. Lift chest, tuck chin and place hands on hips.

Squeeze butt muscles, balance on one leg and lift other directly beside it. Squat as if sitting into chair, knee in-line with toe; hold two seconds.

Return to start position.

Cool down with some gentle stretching.

The lobby opened in November 2008, adding nine surgery suites, support space and patient-registration areas.

According to Sherman Craig, one of the trail’s founders, the effort was the brainchild of the 5 Ponds Partners, a group of local businesses and advocacy groups that wanted “to focus on maintaining the natural beauty and diverse recreational resources inherent to the area.”

They worked together to take advantage of the greatest economic development opportunities available in the area, the nearby woods and waters. As Mr. Craig explained, “It was economic development in its purest form. We recycled an old network of existing trails and turned it into an adventure, a quest.”

The grassroots effort was extraordinary, “I’ve never lived in a community that was so cooperative and supportive!” revealed Mr. Craig.

Wanakena has a year round population of about 40 residents, with over 200 residents living in town during the summer months.

It doesn’t hurt to have a nearby NYS Ranger School, with its incredible forestry resources, in Wanakena. Jamie Savage, also one of the “Partners,” is a forestry instructor at the campus.

A local chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club offered their help and trail building expertise. Other partners included the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the NY Department of State and the North East State Foresters Association.

It also helped to have folks such as Rick Kovaks and his wife, Angie, owners of Packbasket Adventures, a bed and breakfast and Adirondack guide service in Wanakena.

In addition, Kovaks is the proprietor of the Wanakena General Store, the village meeting place. He has fashioned the business around the outdoors, with GPS and bear canister rentals, and a growing flyfishing shop, in addition to providing groceries and the daily newspaper.

I was interested to learn that Kovaks’ log cabin B&B sits on the banks of the Oswagatchie River, on the exact location of a cabin that was once owned by my old friend, the late Edwin Reid.

Reid was a Forest Ranger, guide, hunter, trapper and author. He was also a reporter for the Plattsburgh Press Republican and a resident of Adirondac, located on the edge of the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness. Most of all, he was a sportsman.

Reid lived the backwoods life, summer and winter, and I expect he would be happy to know that his old haunts are still being enjoyed by a new generation of outdoor travelers. Reid’s old newspaper column heading was, “This is Packbasket Country.”

And so it remains, in a sleepy, little village, tucked away deep in the heart of the Adirondacks, there is an atmosphere of a time warp, where the town appears to be stuck in a kinder, gentler period, in a place where neighbors know their neighbors and everyone is willing to work together for the common good. It sure is nice to know that such a place still exists!

ast week’s column about the Northville-Placid Trail, detailed the history of the oldest and longest end to end hiking trail in the Adirondacks.

However, I must correct one fact.

Work on the trail began in 1921 and it was officially completed in 1923.

In 2013, the trail will celebrate its centennial Although the NPT likely remains the most popular and heavily traveled of the region’s long distance trails, there is a new end to end, long distance hiking trail that is quickly gaining in popularity.

The Adirondack’s newest, long distance trail is the Cranberry Lake 50, a fifty-mile loop that circumnavigates Cranberry Lake as it passes through some of the most remote, scenic and lightly traveled backcountry in the entire park.

I am quite familiar with the lay of the land in that region, since I have been traveling throughout the local woods and waters for many years, primarily while fishing for brook trout.

Several years ago, a writer from Men’s Journal magazine called while researching the most remote locations in the eastern US. He wanted to know about the kind of places where a man could escape modern day society and be truly lost for a while.

It didn’t take long for me to come up with an answer. Of the many areas I’ve traveled in over 30 years in the woods, it is difficult to find a place that is much wilder than the south end of Cranberry Lake and the adjacent Five Ponds Wilderness Area of the Oswagatchie River.

It is an area steeped in history, with loggers, guides and artists including Fredrick Remington and famous anglers, including Ray Bergman author of Trout.

At the mouth of Sucker Brook, on the east shore of Cranberry Lake rests a monument carved into a huge glacial erratic. Honoring one of the forefathers of American flyfishing, it reads, "In memory of Reuben Wood, a genial gentleman and great fisherman, who was fond of these solitudes."

The new trail was completed in 2008 and it has a website located at www.cranberry50.org. The trail, which combines old logging roads, hunter ’s trails and canoe carries, saw the first hikers officially complete the Cranberry 50 in the spring of 2008.

The development of the trail is a testament to the vision, collaboration and hard work of townspeople, businesses, advocacy groups and the NYSDEC. To date, fewer than 100 people have completed the entire route. Only five travelers have done it in the winter, which is rather surprising since the trails and terrain are ideal for cross country skiing. Those who complete the entire route are entitled to a Cranberry Lake 50 patch.

The route, with a maximum elevation of only about 400 feet above sea level, encompasses a long section of the Oswagatchie River, before setting off through the remote ponds and big woods surrounding Cranberry Lake.

These are big woods, and in places, they have become nearly impassable due to the Big Blow of 1995, a windstorm that toppled over 100,000 acres of Adirondack forests. Much of the country is impenetrable due to the severe blowdown.

The region is interspersed with numerous ponds, backwoods streams, waterfalls and innumerable beaver dams. It features a gentle mix of hardwood forests and old growth softwoods, with soaring virgin pine and huge old growth,

Geeks stand and be proud

I

cannot remember when it first occurred to me but it did cross my mind again while shopping online for some new t-shirts.

I was torn between the “Bazinga!” and “Resistance is Futile” T-shirts. Yes, I am a geek. If you knew that Bazinga! is Sheldon Cooper ’s “gotcha” phrase or how resistance is pointless, you may be one too. If so, stand proud and know it’s good to be a geek.

It wasn’t always that way. There were many times when being a geek was tough but the Navy changed all that when I became a tron, which has no connection to the movie; I was an avionics tech and we were called the trons. Our charge was the entire avionics suite. The ability to repair something was pretty cool stuff. That’s why I say good times will come one day my geek friends.

One place that being a geek can be challenging comes in personal interactions. When a twelver (person whose device flashes 12:00 because they cannot program it) asks me a tech question I often feel the need to filter, which along with a proper answer can be difficult.

Two people can ask me the same ques-

tion and I filter the answer based on the person’s geek level.

Consider a common proverb written two ways. “A revolving lithic conglomerate accumulates no bryophyte congeries” and “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” Almost everyone knows the second one but fewer

The challenge is putting things into understandable terms for the non-geeks because many are quickly lost if the words go too far up the geek jargon scale. Slap on the old acronym filter and keep the vernacular simple my fellow geek posse. People will respect you for it.

ndividuals over the age of 50 are turning more frequently to Internet dating to find a new significant other.

After losing a loved one or completing a divorce, many baby boomers are considering getting back into the dating pool. Internet dating sites often provide a good number of candidates for busy people to consider. In busy times filled with work responsibilities and family obligations, logging on to the computer to find a date can be much easier than finding a date in a social setting.

Twenty-two percent of the registered members of Match.com are over the age of 50.

There’s a good chance that other popular dating sites also have a growing number of older participants as well. There are also dating sites geared to the over-50 crowd to make narrowing down prospects even easier.

Don’t underestimate your employees I

just have to say thank you for the overwhelming and encouraging responses I and the staff have received from last week’s column, regarding our plans to bolster the news content of the papers. Many people seemed surprised that we employed the number of full time news reporters we do and that they possessed such vast experience in their field.

Perhaps it’s just human nature but all too often we underestimate what the employees of local companies are capable of producing. And while the grass tends to look greener elsewhere, I was reminded many times over this past week by many individuals that modern technology has seduced us into looking past the local connections in our back yards. Buying local means supporting your friends, family and fellow local taxpayers. The burden we all share supporting our local schools and governments will only come from those paying taxes locally.... but that’s a subject for another day.

The other big revelation that seemed to come from last week’s column was the extended reach of our community papers.

With a total audited distribution of 72,051 in the six North Country Publications, we di-

rect mail 54,732 papers into the immediate service area of the papers. Another 14,405 are picked up at stores and newsstands across Clinton, Essex, Warren and Franklin Counties and we have 2,914 individuals who subscribe to the paper either in print or online.

Since our papers zero-in on the local communities they serve it came as a surprise to folks that our total coverage was as wide spread. In the past we hadn’t shared much news between our own papers, which perpetuated the impression that we had a modest reach. But the feedback we are receiving tells us that you need the news from the entire region as much as you need the hyper-local news and that our planned intentions are exactly what you want to see from us.

Another concern expressed in several emails and conversations related to worry for the other media outlets in the area. First, we would never suggest that we be your only source of community news. It’s important that you maintain several sources to keep you abreast of current events and ensure each outlet fairly represents the coverage they provide. We want our publications

Humidity and houseplants

A

s the temperatures get colder outside and we have our heat on longer, the air inside of our houses gets dry. This dry air can be uncomfortable for us, and it can be deadly to some of our tropical houseplants. The dry air will cause other plants’ leaves to turn brown and crisp.

Wood stoves and fireplaces are the biggest culprits of dry air in houses, but in the cold temperatures also lower the air humidity. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to raise the humidity around your houseplants during the dry winter months.

If you use a wood or pellet stove, place a heavy metal pot filled with water on the top of the stove. The heat will cause the water to evaporate into the air and increase the house’s humidity. Don’t allow the pot to run dry while on the stove as this will cause it to burn and get damaged.

You can also move tropical plants into your kitchen or bathrooms, if there is sufficient light. These rooms tend to be more humid than the rest of the house.

If you cannot move your plants, you can place the plants filled with pebbles and wa-

ter. Just make sure not to allow the bottom of the containers to sit in the water.

The pots should be on top of the pebbles.

Another great way to keep the air humid around your plants is to use a humidifier in the room where most of the plants are located. This is probably the best suggestion for humidifying your house’s air.

If you cannot do any of these suggestions, group the plants together in one area that gets indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight will dry the plants out faster. Keeping the plants close together helps increase the humidity around them from the moist potting mix and the water the plants transpire.

Fortunately, in a few short months, the days will be warmer, the heater on less often, and the air more humid! But until then, consider keeping your houseplants healthy and happy by adding more moisture to your house’s air.

Here is a community fighting for its very survival, their fragile economy in need of an economic upturn that will not only be a big boost for Tupper Lake, but the entire region. We will be taking strong positions on issues like this that affect our lives here in the region with the hope of heightening your awareness and encouraging your participation when touched by the details. Taking sides can be controversial but our goal will be to stimulate thought, provoke action and in the end be a vehicle for growth that benefits those who make this area home.

Traveling trunk to educate students

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Kent-Delord House Museum is once again making a lesson in history portable for local schools.

Through its latest endeavor in its “Trunks of the Past” traveling exhibit, the museum has created a trunk that depicts the life of an average Civil War Union soldier.

Coordinators Pat Loughan and Vickie Evans have put together a steamer trunk filled with items like a Union soldier uniform, Civil-War era flag and various personal items that would have been used by soldiers in the late 1800s, and it’s all thanks to a $500 grant from the Blue and Gray Education Society.

Evans applied for the grant and was rather surprised how easy it was to obtain, she said.

“I thought it would have had to go through a whole big chain of command but I dealt directly with the executive president, Mr. Len Reidel,” said Evans.

The grant simply required the museum show how the trunk would provide education on the Civil War, meeting New York State Education Department requirements, she said. Once that

was done, the money for the project came swiftly.

“I thought I’d have to wait months and months and we had it in about a week and a half after we submitted the bills,” said Evans.

“It was really great.”

Having already created traveling trunks about British officers during the War of 1812, explorer Samuel de Champlain, and early American childhood, Evans said she and Loughan were looking into what the museum would feature next. Given little to-do about the Civil War sesquicentennial last year, Evans said it was the perfect choice to feature the life of a Union soldier.

“We felt it was really important the Kent-Delord House point out this area did have a significant role in the Civil War,” said Evans, referring to the house being the place where the Rev. Francis Bloodgood Hall, chaplain for the 16th New York Regiment during the Civil War, spent his final days.

Evans also pointed out Hall was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism at Salem Heights, Va., where he rode his horse out onto the battlefield to rescue wounded soldiers.

“Not many communities can say they had a Congressional Medal of Honor winner,” she said.

The newest traveling trunk will be made available — like all the others — to local schools so teachers may integrate it into their lesson plans.

“We have lesson plans in there for the teachers and activities that they can do,” said Evans, who worked on the military aspect of the trunk while Loughan focused on the military side. “I put background for each activity in there. It’s all ready to go.”

“And, it doesn’t go into the politics of the

war. It’s just the life of the soldier,” she added.

Loughan said she feels the traveling exhibit gives kids a chance to go beyond reading about the war in books or watching documentaries.

“It’s always better when the kids actually participate in history rather than just have it taught to them,” said Loughan.

The trunk is available for use on a one-week basis for a nominal donation. However, the first five schools to sign up for its use will be able to get it for free, said Evans.

“It’s kind of an incentive for them,” she said.

New York Press Association Paid Summer Internship Program The New York Press Association and Denton Publications are sponsoring a paid summer internship program for 13 students state wide. An application has been sent to high schools and colleges within New York State. Any interested and qualifying students are encouraged to fill out the application and submit it to Denton Publications, P.O. Box 338, Elizabethtown, NY 12932. Once we have received the applications our management team will selected an applicant based on merit and best suited for our summer time opportunity. Applications must be received in our office by March 1, 2011. NYPA Foundation Board of Directors will select and award a total of 13 paid internships. Finalists will be notified by NYPA by the end of March 2011.

Anyone who is currently, or will be enrolled, in a recognized program of undergraduate study is eligible for an eight week internship with a net $2500 stipend offered by NYPA. Applicants must attend college during the 2011-2012 academic year. Students who are family members of a Denton Publication employee are not eligible to earn a paid internship at a Denton Publication, but may apply to another NYPA Member Newspaper within New York State. No newspaper will receive more than one paid internship and the Denton Publication selected applicant may or may not be among the finalists selected by the NYPA Foundation Board.

Northern Tier man charged second time

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com WHITEHALL — The Whitehall Village Police Department arrested a West Chazy man and charged him with five counts of endangering the welfare of a child after an investigation found that he had propositioned at least seven underage females.

Joshua Davison, 25, of West Chazy was arrested Jan. 12 by Whitehall police after an investigation that started with an incident on Dec. 29.

“We had a report of a person trying to pick up a 16-year old female and persuading her to get into his vehicle,” Whitehall Police Chief Matthew Dickinson said. “We put the report on file and started to look into this, and it just snowballed to where we found that there were seven girls between the ages of 13 and 17 whose stories fit the description.”

Dickinson added Davison had been arrested for similar charges by New York State Police in Crown Point over the summer, and that the investigation into the most recent alleged activities was not over.

“There is still another case pending in Dresden that we have forwarded to the Washington County District Attorney,” said Dickinson.

Davison was issued appearance tickets to appear in front of Whitehall Village Court Judge Julie Eagan at a later date.

Spirit Airlines begins service at Plattsburgh Int’l

Friends and family come together for Ken Bowlby

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — Ken Bowlby Sr. is a fighter.

The 63-year-old Schuyler Falls man was diagnosed with cancer of the jaw last August, and according to his daughter, Jaime Whittaker, it was something that began to spread aggressively.

“The doctors said it looked like he had had it more than a year before it was caught,” said Whittaker.

Even from the time of the biopsy for the cancer to when he had the initial surgery to remove the infected part of his lower jaw, Bowlby’s cancer had moved quickly, said his daughter.

“What happened is the tumor itself grew so quickly that doctors ended up taking more of his jaw than they originally planned,” she said. “But, it could’ve spread into his upper jaw and could’ve gone into his brain.”

“The doctors seem to think they’ve removed it all,” she added.

The loss of his lower jaw has made it difficult for her father to speak, said Whittaker, with she and the rest of his family communicating for him on his behalf.

“He can speak a little bit, but it’s very hard to understand him when he talks,” she said. “It’s been difficult for him,

though, because he’s used to being active, not feeling like he has to depend on everyone so much.”

However, Bowlby’s “high spirits” have helped him cope, she said.

“My dad is the kind of person who uses humor to stay positive no matter what,” said Whittaker.

Last Sunday, a benefit was held in Bowlby’s honor, to help with travel expenses he’s incurred going back and forth to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The turnout was overwhelming, said Bowlby’s wife, Donna.

“Our kids worked so hard to put this benefit together,” she said. “We’re so proud of them.”

The idea of putting the benefit together was a no-brainer, said their son, Chris.

“We’re just pleased the community has turned out to support our dad,” he said. “It’s very heart-warming.”

Those who were unable to attend the benefit but still interested in helping Bowlby and his family may send donations to 65 Westcott Road, Schuyler Falls, NY 12985.

Currently, Bowlby is undergoing speech therapy and will soon schedule reconstructive surgery for his jaw.

“It’s been a pretty big ordeal,” said Whittaker, “but he’s staying positive.”

Mountain Lake PBS launches PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest Local contest part of effort to mobilize children to write and illustrate their own stories P L AT T S B U R G H — M o u n t a i n Lake PBS is launching the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest, a local competition designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. This annual effort encourages children in grades K-3 in the North Country region to celebrate the power of creating stories and illustrations by submitting their own original work.

Mountain Lake PBS will actively partner with schools, public libraries and other literacy organizations to implement the contest. Children will be encouraged to write and illustrate stories and submit them to Mountain Lake PBS, which will select winners and award prizes. A first place winner and three honorable mention winners will be selected from each grade level.

“Kids naturally have a keen sense

of curiosity and incredible imaginations,” said Jane Owens, director of Outreach and Education at Mountain Lake PBS. “The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest will provide a safe virtual community forum for North Country children to express their ideas while fostering key early literacy skills such as story-telling.”

Pesticide applicator training to be offered PLATTSBURGH — Cornell Cooperative Extension will host a series of classes that will fulfill various commercial pesticide applicator requirements.

The classes will run from Monday, Feb. 14, through Wednesday, March 17. Each day is broken into two three-hour sessions, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

People already certified to apply pesticides in New York can attend any of these sessions for recertification credits. The cost is $30 per session. Most sessions will be held in Plattsburgh; two will be held in Westport.

The 30-hour qualifying course for those not yet certified includes six core sessions plus four sessions in the specific category needed. The cost of the full 30-hour course is $275, plus any required books. This year, the 30-hour course will be in categories 2 (forestry), 3a (ornamentals and turf), 7a (structural pests) and 7g (cooling towers).

Class size is limited and registration is due by Wednesday, Feb. 9.

Rotarians provide aid to Haiti earthquake victims PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary Club has made a $3,000 donation to earthquake relief in Haiti, through the Rotary Foundation Earthquake Relief Fund. The fund is carrying out relief and rebuilding projects in the areas still dramatically impacted by the January 2010 earthquakes.

The club’s donation will be used toward the fund’s rebuilding of medical clinics and schools, providing children’s vaccinations, providing medical care and prosthetics to women, children and victims of the earthquake.

The donation, said club president Ron Marino, continues the club’s commitment to assist Haiti, already the poorest nation in the western Hemisphere before the earthquake disaster.

“Our club believes in the mission of serving our community and other countries in need,” said Marino. “Through the auspices of Rotary we are able to reach and help many people.”

“Our club has been so terribly saddened by the continued hardships faced in Haiti; the terribly poverty and limited food and safe water sources, the catastrophic earthquake and the following cholera epidemic and other health issues,” added Haitian project leader Victoria Zinser Duley. “We are grateful to have connections through Rotary International to try to serve some of these needs, and for the generosity of our club, its members and supporters.”

The Sunrise Rotary Club and its members donated more than $2,200 in 2010 to the Rotary-affiliated Shelterbox program deployed in Haiti, which provided life-sustaining equipment to earthquake victims. In 2009, the club donated $2,500 through Ryan’s Well foundation to build wells for safe drinking water in Haiti.

The club will continue fundraising to assist Haiti and other international projects, and to meet local and community needs.

Students benefit from generosity of local businesses PLATTSBURGH — Tough economic times almost cost Holly Farrell her college education.

“When I was applying to colleges, my father had just lost his job to downsizing,” said Farrell, a junior education major at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

“As the economy got worse, and my father spent seven months without a job; college seemed like a big expense, even with reduced SUNY prices.”

The bright spot on the Cadyville native’s horizon came with her acceptance letter to SUNY Plattsburgh. Farrell was the recipient of a UFirst Federal Credit Union Scholarship, part of the college’s North Country Scholarship Program. The fund connects local businesses and philanthropists with students from Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties who are attending SUNY Plattsburgh.

Businesses and individuals such as UFirst, Georgia-Pacific, Northern Insuring, Graymont Materials, Lockrows, and the Giltz, Knapp and Johnson families have contributed leadership gifts of $2,500 or

more and have scholarships in their name.

Other businesses and friends of the college have also contributed to the program, and helped North Country students afford to go to college in their own backyard.

“When I got my acceptance letter and saw the scholarship offer, it felt as if a huge weight had been lifted off me and my family,” Farrell said. “It is sometimes hard to put into words the magnitude of what this scholarship has done for me, but it is immensely appreciated, and I will never forget those who chose to help me in my time of need while at SUNY Plattsburgh.”

“Even in tough economic times, our businesses are supporting our students,” said Faith Osborne Long, director of development at SUNY Plattsburgh. “This is an investment in our community. The assistance given to students by local businesses and friends helps keep those students here both while they attend school and after they graduate. Plattsburgh State graduate applications due PLATTSBURGH — The State University of New York at Plattsburgh’s director of graduate admissions wants students and prospective students to know about some special opportunities to defray college costs.

SUNY Plattsburgh offers graduate students a number of fellowships and assistantships that cover 100 percent of in-state tuition and, in some cases, provide a stipend as well. Up to five graduate diversity fellowships and more than 25 graduate assistantships are available to students who will be taking a full-time course load of 12 or more credits.

The diversity fellowships are open to students applying for entrance into one of the college’s graduate degree programs for the fall of 2011 and are designed to honor diversity in the broadest sense of the word. Students who are non-traditional, have faced

economic barriers, have been challenged by a disability, are first-generation college students or will be in a minority group in their chosen field are all encouraged to apply.

Applicants must complete a 250-400 word essay explaining how they will contribute to the diversity of the student body in the graduate program and how they have overcome disadvantages to succeed in higher education.

Graduate assistantships are available to well-qualified, full-time matriculated graduate students. Full-time graduate assistants typically work 20 hours a week during the academic year; part-time graduate assistants may work from 10 to 15 hours a week, depending on the position.

Three types of graduate assistantships are offered: residence directors; administrative assistants; and research/teaching assistants.

Both awards cover tuition, and assistantships provide stipends of $5,320 or more per academic year depending on the position.

Part-time assistants receive 50 to 75 percent of the in-state tuition rate and a stipend of $2,660 or more, again, depending on the position. Resident directors also receive housing and a partial meal plan.

Applications for both types of awards, as well as applications for students wishing to enter a graduate program at SUNY Plattsburgh in the summer or fall 2011 semesters, are due Tuesday, Feb. 15. Forms may be found online at www.plattsburgh.edu/admissions/graduate/assistantships/.

Wreath ceremony had extra special meaning

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Each year, Kimberly Bouissey’s fifth grade class at Momot Elementary School presents wreaths to veterans during the holidays. However, this recent holiday season had special meaning.

In addition to connecting with veterans through the Robert A. Lafountain Post 179 chapter of Disabled American Veterans, Bouissey’s class had a chance to meet with her son, Christopher Hart, a Green Beret with the U.S. Army. Hart joined his mother in presenting wreaths donated by Pray’s Farm Market and decorated by students in what was a special ceremony.

“I have been doing this since I started teaching ... it’s going on 11 years now,” Bouissey said of presenting wreaths to veterans. “And, my veterans are very special to me. But, when my son came to [the ceremony], it made me so happy.”

Having the opportunity for her son to meet the veterans she has become good friends with over the years was particularly special, said Bouissey.

“For me, this was the most warm and fuzzy time we’ve ever done this,” she said. “During Christopher ’s first deployment, all the veterans I’ve developed friendships with through school would stop by my house and just fix my flag or stop and give me a hug and support.

They’d tell me he’s going to be all right and if I needed anything to let them know.”

“It was hard, but with the support of the veterans I got through it,” she said.

Bouissey said her son was glad to meet the group of veterans to thank them for all they’ve done and continue to do.

“I think it made him happy to meet all of them and to see what his mom does for them, too,” said Bouissey.

Why does Bouissey feel it’s important to recognize veterans? If you ask her, she’ll tell you.

“When we first started doing this, I realized some of my fifth-graders didn’t even know what it meant to be a veteran,” said Bouissey.

“And, since we’ve been doing this, they’ve learned so much about them. My true love for the veterans continues to grow, too. I always say, if I ever win the lottery, I’d want to give back to them, even though I don’t think we could ever give back to them enough.”

Winter Wine Festival returns to benefit Transportation Museum Three-day event is ‘good exposure for new businesses,’ says winery owner

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The wine will flow freely once again as the Champlain Valley Transportation Museum hosts its second annual Champlain Valley Winter Wine Festival.

The three-day event will return to the city Friday, Jan. 28, through Sunday, Jan. 30, showcasing the region’s unique specialty wine, food and restaurants.

Ashlea Keene, director of fundraising and membership for the museum, said the festival will kick off again this year with a wine dinner at Olive Ridley’s, 37 Court St., from 7 to 9 p.m. next Friday night, signifying the culmination of several months of planning.

“We talked to the wineries and restaurants involved last year to get some suggestions and ideas to make the event even better,” Keene said,

“and we’ve been working with them and new vendors since July.

We have a lot of the same local wineries from last year but we’ve brought some new ones on this year as well.”

“It should be a fun weekend of festivities,” she added.

The festival will continue with a grand tasting and silent auction in the City Hall Rotunda from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, which will give people the opportunity to meet with food and wine experts while sampling their products, said Keene. Live entertainment and bigticket auction items such as roundtrip airfare for two to Orlando, courtesy of Allegiant Air, are expected to help draw a crowd as well, she said.

“We have paintings from several local artists. We have some handpainted wine glasses. We have a lot of stuff from all sorts of local businesses,” Keene said.

That same evening, wine dinners will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at both Irises Café and Wine Bar, 20 City Hall Place, and Michele’s Fine Dining, 5131 U.S. Ave. The following day, a Sunday brunch will be held at

The Smoked Pepper, 13 City Hall Place, from 12 to 3 p.m.

“It’s been a huge build-up over the last few weeks and it’s really come together,” Keene said of the festival. “It’s exciting seeing it take hold and hearing buzz in the community about it happening again this year. I’m very excited.”

Marty Fortin, co-owner of Amazing Grace Vineyard and Winery, Chazy, said she’s also looking forward to the festival, which helps promote her business and others like it in the area.

“I think that our area is ripe for the picking regarding events like this,” said Fortin. “We don’t really have a lot going on in our area in the winter and I think this is a nice change of pace. I thought last year ’s was extremely well-attended for its first year.”

“It’s good exposure for new businesses,” she added.

Proceeds from this year ’s festival will again benefit the development of the museum’s Kids Station, an ongoing project to establish a hands-on museum for kids. Grand tasting tickets are $25 per person, wine dinner tickets are $75 per per-

Training tips avoid injury while working out W

ith exercise on the minds of many, it’s important to go over a few pointers to ensure the next trip to the gym does not end in injury.

• Be careful of “no pain, no gain.” Many beginners feel their workout isn’t working if it’s not hurting. While mild pain is to be expected, it’s up to the individual to determine if the pain is indicative of something bigger. Swelling and extreme stiffness are not normal, and individuals should cease working out if either of those problems arise. For beginners, expect muscle soreness after the first couple of workouts. This can be painful, but it’s often a result of working muscles that have not been taxed in quite awhile. This pain should subside, and once the muscles grow accustomed to being worked, the pain, stiffness or soreness should no longer appear after a workout (this may take a workout or two for the muscles to get used to it). If the pain persists, do not continue to exercise through an injury.

Any persistent pain should be discussed with a physician.

• Know your limits. Beginners need to be especially aware of their exercise limits. Initially, they shouldn’t attempt to do exercises their bodies can’t handle. Lifting too much weight is common for beginners. Ideally, lift smaller amounts when beginning a workout to get the motion of the exercise down pat. As workouts progress, a person

can then gradually add weight. Many fitness professionals feel adding 10 percent each week is a safe and effective approach, but individuals will know after a few workouts what works best for them. It’s good to push oneself, but don’t push too hard and increase the risk of injury.

• Work with a trainer.

Personal trainers can help beginners immensely. Trainers can teach beginners how to use machines and stretch properly and can answer any questions beginners commonly have. Trainers can be expensive, but many gyms offer one or two free personal training sessions to new members. Once those free sessions are finished, individuals can continue with the trainer or choose to go on their own. But if the free sessions are made available, beginners should take advantage of those sessions to help get their fitness routine off on the right foot.

• Fewer repetitions, more sets. A common mistake when beginning an exercise regimen is to dive right in without really knowing the ins and outs of a routine. For example, many people load up on repetitions, feeling the more reps, the more effective a workout will be. However, beginners often find fewer reps but additional sets is more effective. So instead of doing four sets of 10 reps, do five sets of eight reps. This might seem too small to make a difference, but beginners often tire near the end of a set, and doing fewer reps per set can help them avoid fatigue and

make the most of each repetition and set.

• Stay hydrated. Drink water throughout an exercise regimen to remain hydrated.

Maintaining proper fluid levels helps avoid cramping and dehydration, which can bring their own batch of painful side effects, including nausea and heart palpitations. For

those who workout in the early morning, be sure to drink water before working out to overcome any dehydration that may have occurred while asleep. For those who workout after work, be sure to drink water throughout the day so the body is fully hydrated when the time comes to hit the gym.

Self defense serves dual purpose

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — David Boise, owner of Villari’s Self Defense Center in Plattsburgh, has found there are a variety of reasons people turn towards martial arts.

“Even though they say they want health and fitness, deep down inside we all go into martial arts for security,” he explained. “Traditionally martial arts was designed for health and fitness and then it leaned toward self defense.”

The Association for Women’s Self Defense Advancement brings light to some startling statistics — Every day four women are killed by abusive partners; one in four women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime; and a woman is raped

every 46 seconds.

With statistics such as these, it’s even more important for women to learn self defense.

“Basically we work on gross motor skills,” Boise said. “Gross motor skills ... are the first thing that lead you to a real self defense situation. There’s a lot of psychological components to it.”

However, Boise has also seen the health benefits of learning self defense.

“I lost 55 pounds my first year,” he said.

“It works the body naturally. Not using weights.”

“Now the big thing in fitness is using your own body,” Boise added. “It’s a combination of things — mental, physical, spiritually, finding your center.”

More women aware of cervical cancer

A

n increase in cervical cancer awareness is something some experts say has resulted in fewer women contracting the disease.

“Numbers have decreased,” said Dee Desrocher, a nurse at Plattsburgh Pediatrics.

Desrocher said incoming female patients are always encouraged to protect themselves against cervical cancer. Females who have intercourse at an early age, have several sexual partners, and/or have unprotected sex are at a higher risk of contracting the disease.

Cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. However, over the past few years, women have been able to protect themselves from cervical cancer by learning more about the disease, as well as receiving the vaccination called Gardasil.

The vaccine, which is a series of three shots that last a lifetime, is recommended among female’s ages 9 to 26. The vaccination prevents women from contracting the most common strands of the human papillomavirus, more commonly known as HPV, which is the leading cause of cervical cancer.

“There has been an increased in awareness of Cervical

Cancer and its connection to HPV,” said Martha Stahl, vice president for external affairs in the Plattsburgh office of Planned Parenthood.

Limited supplies of the free Gardasil vaccine are available at the Clinton County Health Department Health Services Unit, located at 133 Margaret St., but they won’t last long.

“We have a limited supply,” said Health Services Unit representative Maghan Parent.

Staying aware Though January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, women can prevent themselves from cervical cancer year-round by being vaccinated and scheduling regular screenings with their gynecologist. Even if a woman has already contracted HPV, she can still get the vaccine.

Stahl said there are several forms of HPV, mostly causing cervical cancer and genital warts. The virus is easily treatable if it’s detected early in a papanicolaou examination.

“I suggest that women talk to their physician about how

often they should get the [PAP] exam,” she said.

Getting regular examinations will detect abnormalities within the cervix. These examinations are costly, and some women without insurance might be unable to afford them.

However, there are options for women who can’t afford screening or treatment.

“Women should not let their inability to pay determine how often they are screened. There are many local programs that will help them,” Stahl said.

Planned Parenthood can help women with low-income, who may not be eligible for medical coverage. The organization does not offer the vaccination, however, but has paired up with local health offices in an effort to increase awareness and treatment of HPV. Although HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, others risks are associated with the disease, such as age, sexual behavior, HIV, diet, genetics and smoking. While cervical cancer can be deadly, the rate of death among women declines every year and the disease is curable.

“Like any cancer, it must be detected early,” said Stahl.

Good and bad diet fads A

s anyone who’s ever attempted dieting knows, advice on weight loss comes from every corner.

Friends might swear by the latest dieting trend while family members may be just as adamantly convinced the trend doesn’t have merit.

So what’s true and what’s false?

Simply put, combining a healthy diet with regular exercise is the best way to lose weight and keep that weight off. While most adults are fully aware of that fact, that doesn’t stop them from finding the latest fad and letting it dictate their eating habits for days or even weeks. For those about to diet, consider the following good and bad diet fads.

The Good • Portion control: Many diets emphasize the importance of portion control. Research has indicated it’s not just what we eat that causes weight gain, but how much we’re eating as well. In a study in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers found cookies are 700 percent bigger than the suggested

USDA standards. And it’s not just cookies that are much bigger than recommended, as our servings of pasta (480 percent), muffins (333 percent) and bagels (195 percent) are much bigger than they should be.

While not all diets that promote portion control are necessarily healthy, portion control on its own is a healthy way for everyone to approach their daily diet.

• Lifestyle change: Individuals who want to lose weight should look for dietary tips that promote a change in lifestyle and not just changes in diet.

Look for diets that don’t have a timeline, promoting fast weight loss in “X” amount of weeks. A diet that promotes a longterm commitment to eating healthy foods while also encouraging daily exercise is one that’s likely going to be more successful and beneficial than one that promises significant weight loss in a short period of time.

Cutting out entire food groups means dieters won’t enjoy a balanced diet. Also, dieters will begin to crave the foods they’re not getting, which could lead to bingeing.

Another side effect to one-food diets is that certain foods can cause some unenjoyable side effects, including dehydration or gastrointestinal problems. Look for balance in a diet, which should eliminate one-food diets from consideration.

• Misguided vegetarianism: While vegetarianism isn’t bad, dieters often apply it incorrectly. When applied correctly, a vegetarian diet has been linked to all sorts of benefits, including lower rates of obesity and heart disease. However, dieters often mistakenly eat a vegetarian diet with a foundation of cheese and pasta, which can actually cause weight gain. Carbohydrate-rich foods, while they might be vegetarian, will likely result in weight added as opposed to lost.

When adopting a vegetarian diet, be sure to include whole grains and fruit and eat foods like nuts, beans or even tofu to ensure you’re getting enough protein.

• Bye-bye, carbohydrates: Arguably no diet is more popular than the one that advocates eliminating carbohydrates.

This is problematic, especially for those who want to combine their healthy diet with exercise. Carbohydrates are ideal foods for boosting energy, which dieters will need if they want to exercise regularly. Whole-grain breads, oatmeal and brown rice are all beneficial carbohydrate sources. For those desiring to eliminate some forms of carbs from their diets, eliminate white bread and white rice, as those are low in nutrients.

When it comes to dieting, there are certainly plenty of options touting incredible weight loss in short periods of time.

But dieters should always look for healthy ways to lose weight and keep it off, which often includes some combination of a well-balanced diet that promotes moderation.

War of 1812 celebration plans begin PLATTSBURGH — A meeting was held last week to begin plans for a celebration to commemorate the War of 1812. A year-long celebration will tie in with the annual Battle of Plattsburgh events, as well as other major events of the war.

So far, an interpretive trail has already begun, with plans to expand.

Robinson knows he is a marked man by other grapplers Peru three-time state champ knows all eyes are on him as he attempts rare four-peat

By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com PERU — Very few have ever held the title of three time new York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling champion.

Even fewer have held the title of four-time champion.

That is the goal of Peru senior Arik Robinson, who has had his armed raised in the final match of the season for the past three years.

“I know that people are coming for me now,” Robinson, who has a 26-2 record coming off a successful title defense at the prestigious Eastern States Tournament, said. “I figure that everyone on that mat is targeting me because it is my senior year and they want to be the one that knocks me off.”

Robinson is coming off successful runs not only at Eastern States, but at the Peru Wrestling Tournament, where the hometown favorite scored his fifth title at the event.

Both Robinson and coach Mike Hogan said that the two losses for the season were the result of an injury that took place at a tournament, which hampered him in one match and forced him to forfeit another.

“I was really sick at the start of the season and I got hurt at one point,” said Robinson.

“I am starting to feel a lot better now.”

That may be bad news for the rest of the state, as Robinson continues to use his speed and technique to record quick takedowns and falls. At Eastern states, Robinson dropped his opening round opponent, Mitchell Kamm of Pine Bush, in 25 seconds.

He followed that up with a 23 second pin of Long Beach’s Matt Gray.

In the quarters, Robinson scored a 7-3 victory against Shoreham’s TJ Fabian, then scored a 4-1 win over Mark West of Hauppauge to advance to the finals, where he scored a 6-4 victory over Corey Rasheed of Longwood to take the title for the second straight year.

Robinson said that knowing everyone is gunning for him helps him train harder.

“I try to stay confident, but not too confident because I know that everyone is out for me,” Robinson said. “I’ll get the best match from everyone I wrestle.”

Robinson said that the ultimate goal is to become the fifth four-time state champion,

joining Jesse Jantzen of Shoreman - Wading River (1997-2000), J.P. O’Connor of Oxford(2003-06), Alex Ekstrom of PalmyraMacedon (200-6-2009) and Troy Nickerson of Chenango Forks, the state’s only fivetime champion from 2001-2005.

Robinson first won the state championship in 2008, taking the 96-lbs. championship with a 8-1 decision against Dylan Kavanaugh of Vernon Verona out of Section III. In that meet, Robinson pinned then defending state champion Colton Dalberth of Marion in Section V 32 second into their semifinal meeting.

In 2009, Robinson moved up to 103-lbs., where he again defeated Dalberth, this time in the finals by a 4-0 decision to win his second state title. His toughest match was in the first round, where he beat Austin Keough of Warsaw in Section V by a 2-1 decision that drew plenty of attention from the Times Union Center crowd. Robinson then pinned every opponent on his way to the finals.

Last year, Robinson again jumped a weight class to 112, and again, met know senior Dalberth in the finals. This time, Robinson took a 9-2 decision to capture his third title.

Peru High School’s Daniel Lennon dominated the 1,600-meter run at the indoor track event held Jan. 15 at the Plattsburgh State Field House. Lennon finished first with a time of 4:49.8. Lennon also won the 1,000-meter run and 3,200 relay during the meet. Lennon had a more than 30-second lead over his competitors in both the 1,600-meter and 1,000-meter events.

Kolby Sample started the night out by pinning Daniel Papa at 112, and the Bobcats cruised to a victory Jan. 14.

In a match that saw eight forfeits, the next match was at 145, where the Bobcats Justin Kellett scored a pin over Kodie Simpson.

Forest Carpenter then pinned Jonathan Luxon at 152, followed by Matt Lashway pinning Roger Howerton at 160.

Jordan Bouyea scored the lone win for the Patriots at 171 with a 10-2 major decision.

Bobcats Bryant Fortin and Mike Riley then scored an 11-7 decision and a tech fall, respectively, for the Bobcats.

Varsity indoor track The Peru and Saranac boys and girls indoor track and field teams scored victories during the two meets that were held Jan. 15.

Daniel Lennon scored three victories to help pace the Indians to a win, while Ashley Leta also scored three wins for the Indians on the girls side.

SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — The DART Race of Champions Modified Tour will make its first appearance at Airborne Speedway Saturday, June 4, track promoter Mike Perrotte has announced.

“This is the premier asphalt series for NASCAR-type Modified series in New York,” Perrotte said. “They race at many asphalt tracks throughout the state, including the Race of Champions 200 at Oswego Speedway.”

Matt Hirschman, 28, of Northampton, Pa., will lead the Race of Champions contingent into Plattsburgh. Hirschman is the fourtime and defending RoC champion. His father, Tony Hirschman, is a five-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion and the winner of the 2010 RoC 200 at Oswego.

Other top competitors on the Race of Champions circuit include 2010 runner-up Deren Scherer of Binghamton, Erick Rudolph and Chuck Hossfeld of Ransomville, and Jan and Mike Leaty, a father and son combination from Williamson.

“I’m always interested in racing at a new track,” Matt Hirschman said. “But I’m really excited to be going to Airborne.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the track and the way it’s run.”

Hirschman also plans to compete as a regular on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour as do several of the Race of Champions Tour drivers. “I’ll be racing with my own equipment to defend the RoC title and drive the Boehler Racing Enterprises No. 3 on the Whelen Tour,” he said.

The 2011 Airborne Speedway schedule is nearing completion.

An examination of Withered Remains

PLATTSBURGH — There’s been an evolution of Withered Remains, but it’s one members of the progressive black metal band feel has reached its destination.

The band was founded in May 2009 by guitarist and vocalist Zac Haab, bassist Brandon Agnew and drummer Cole Martin.

“I had been talking to Brandon about starting a black metal band for months, when Cole approached us about jamming,” said Haab.

And, just as informal as the band’s formation, so was its name.

“The name was kind of a spur of the moment thing,” said Haab. “We were originally ‘Weathered Remains,’ because I wanted the name to reflect some sort of ancient, decrepit feel, to fit the atmosphere of the music, but we changed it to Withered Remains because it had a better ring to it.”

Originally, the band recruited vocalist Nick Banker and guitarist Nick Rheume. The band decided to go their separate ways with Banker after it was decided he was not the type of vocalist the band was looking for, said Haab, and Rheume eventually left citing creative differences. Guitarist Tom Wheelock was recruited into the mix, replacing Rheume shortly afterward. Agnew most recently left the band, being replaced by bassist Jon Bradley.

With its new line-up, the band has begun working on new material and rewriting some of its old pieces, playing on its “mesh of influences,” said Haab.

“We are going for an atmospheric, progressive black metal sound, influenced by Burzum, Emperor and Krallice, among hundreds of other bands that we all listen to, no matter what genre,” he said. “I think that people are attracted to our sound because I find the droning guitar harmonies and the melancholy atmosphere of our music to be almost entrancing.”

“It’s a very unique sound that we have, especially in the local community,” he added.

The reaction to their music has been good, said Haab, with

the band performing in several venues since their first gig at Cocktails in Morrisonville with Mythology and Avernus Ortus in July 2009. Currently, the band is planning a small tour throughout New England this summer.

Though Withered Remains doesn’t have an album recorded yet, the band is in the process of recording their first release, which is currently untitled and will contain six tracks.

News in brief SRT committee to meet Tuesday PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac River Trail Advisory Committee will meet Tuesday, Jan. 25, at City Hall, 41 City Hall Place, beginning at 4 p.m.

The meeting will consist of progress reports from the city engineer and subcommittees, a report on recent grant applications, and an examination of the committee’s needs as the trail project continues to progress.
