Local filmmaker to hold open audition at ROTA

PLATTSBURGH — A local filmmaker is seeking a few good actors and actresses to be a part of his newest independent film, “A Promise Made of Wax.” Jason Torrance, who wrote the script and will also direct and star in the film, said there are still three lead and several supporting roles open, and that he needs both men and women in their 20s and 30s to fill them.

He will be holding an open audition Saturday, Jan. 5 at ROTA Gallery in Plattsburgh from 1-4 p.m., and filming will take place throughout January.

The movie is about three couples—one who just had a baby and is now breaking up, another who just met and are dealing with their own personal demons, and an emotionally toxic relationship between

two cousins—whose lives are intertwined.

The plot sounds like a soap opera drama, but Torrance explained that, at its core, it is really an ensemble piece about betrayal.

“It’s a concerted series of sucker punches,” Torrance said.”Wax feels firm, but you apply a little pressure and it crumbles.”

“A Promise Made of Wax” will be Torrance’s third film, behind “Melodrama” and “Easter Sunday Can Never Be Lent,” both of which he plans on submitting to independent film festivals in the near future.

Torrance, who was homeschooled, got into filmmaking because he loved watching movies as a child.

Sometimes, he said, he would see eight movies in one day.

PLATTSBURGH — For local artist Jenny Curtis, it all begins with nature.

She finds inspiration all around her, from the forests that surround her home in Saranac Lake to the spot along the Jackrabbit Ski Trail in the Eastern High Peaks where the red pines stand tall and thin.

“I get a lot of inspiration from nature and organic forms,” Curtis said. “Right now I’m really obsessed with how organic forms repeat in nature, everywhere in everything. I think about it all the time.”

Lately, those repeating patterns have inspired such paintings as “Baby Teeth,” a turbulent array of colors and patterns all transposed

East Coast Snocross coming to Airborne SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — High-performance snowmobile racers from Canada, New York and New England will compete over a course of jumps, bumps and table tops in the first event of the International Triple Crown Series planned for Jan. 12 and 13. “We had two successful events at the Crete Civic Center,” promoter Mike Perrotte said.

“We just wanted to try something different. All the room we have in the infield and on the front straightaway should allow for an excellent track. I think with our grandstands and ample parking for both competitors and fans, Airborne should be a good fit for a big snowmobile race.”

Impact of former librarian remembered at PSUC

“Phyllis was an extremely determined person,” Hansen said. “She would regularly share her progress toward meeting her philanthropic goal. She delighted in imagining the impact she would have on students and the library.”

Much of her gift will support the Phyllis Wells Endowed Scholarship, a fund that is unrestricted.

The rest will go to the Wells Endowment for Special Collections in Feinberg Library to support the preservation of rare and archival materials related to the North Country, Plattsburgh State and New York state.

Wells enjoyed special collections and continued to volunteer after her retirement.

She had been studying local churches in order to write a book on their history and gave some of her notes to the archives. She also donated other historical materials, including information on covered bridges, Clinton County historical markers, ghost towns and post offices.

“We’d talk for hours about local history and her book,” said Debra Kimok, associate librarian in Special Collections.

“Phyllis was very detail-oriented and was getting quite proficient using a computer, something that wasn’t easy for her in the beginning, but which she was determined to figure out.”

Wells also published the “Subject Index to the Clinton County Portion of the History of Clinton and Franklin Counties, N.Y.” “It was a huge success,” Kimok said.

It was published in 1880 and until Wells created her index there was no easy way to locate specific subjects.

She donated all sales and proceeds from the “Index” to Special Collections.

“Her impact on the college as both an employee and a volunteer was already significant,” said Plattsburgh State President John Ettling, “but with this gift, Phyllis will continue to make a difference, especially for our students who need financial support more than ever.”

The local Kiwanis recently distributed dictionaries to the third grade students at Saranac Elementary School.

PLATTSBURGH — Phyllis Wells passed away at 82 roughly a year ago.

The bulk of her estate went to Plattsburgh State, making it the second largest gift from an alumna in the university’s history.

The $470,000 donation from the former librarian is second only to the estate gift from Olive Mason Flynt, a former employee who gave $1 million to Plattsburgh State in 2007.

Wells earned her Master of Science in elementary education from Plattsburgh State in 1957, saying she lived her life at the school and built her career there.

Phyllis Wells “She spent her whole career with us,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Anne Whitmore Hansen. “She enjoyed her work and took great pride in her connection with the college.

When she informed me of her intention to support the college so generously, she commented that ‘it was simply the right thing to do because the college gave her so much.’”

Wells joined Plattsburgh State as an assistant librarian in 1957 and received several promotions while there. She became a senior assistant librarian in 1979 and an associate librarian in 1987, the same year she retired.

Welcome 2013!

W

ith the Mayan Calendar ending on Dec. 21, 2012, for some, the idea we would all still be here for the year 2013 was unthinkable.

But if you are reading this, then it is proof we made it.

So happy 2013 — everyone deserves a pat on the back for making it through a very interesting year. We witnessed our federal politicians maneuvering to avoid the fiscal cliff following a heated election that nearly divided the country, countless fatalities to senseless murder-suicides that no one will ever be able to make sense of; the voice behind the iconic red friend Elmo being denounced as a sex offender, and people are still facing a very uncertain economy.

Now that the champagne and sparkling grape juice have gone flat, the midnight resolutions have been broken or kept it is time for a fresh start. Even without the drop of an extravagant ball in Times Square people can still mark the beginning of a new phase, or the end of a bad habit to improve their lives.

According to a study by USA.gov, the typical new years resolutions include: • Drink less alcohol • Eat healthy food • Get a better education • Get a better job • Get fit • Lose weight • Manage debt • Manage stress • Quit smoking • Reduce, reuse, and recycle • Save money • Take a trip • Volunteer to help others As the cliche goes, every journey begins with a single step. Accomplishing goals and regaining happiness and fulfillment in your life can be achieved in the same way.

To loose those extra pounds get out and start a new morning routine of walking to

the coffee shop. To drink or smoke less the steps to breaking the habits and addictions can be deep rooted and tricky. Find what works for you. Find a way to take your mind off of it and talk to people who have gone through it before. Chances are you aren’t the first to have troubles, so it is alright to ask for help.

Our social habits and associations, as much as our eating, drinking, and exercise patterns, can be just as much an anchor against progress. If the friends you have surrounded yourself with for years seem to be standing still while you try to move forward it’s okay to separate yourself from them. In life, not everything and everyone we attach ourselves to should be permanent attachments. Don’t be afraid to go to new places and don’t be afraid to learn new things.

The symbolism behind the new year is in the title: new. Human beings are forever growing and you need to create a life for yourself to facilitate growth.

Looking back again there were many positives to 2012. Nationally our president was elected to serve a second term, the US teams and athletes won 104 metals during the Summer Olympics in London. Regionally an Elizabethtown youth, Connor Marvin, who suffered from a rare inherited heart condition, received a heart transplant and a new chance at life.

While there is no Mayan calendar extending into 2013, the year is sure to bring plenty of positives — just as it is sure to unfortunately have its negatives.

What does $6 billion buy?

T

he financial results are now in from the recent 2012 federal election. We've just participated in the most expensive election in U.S. history. Over $6 billion was spent by federal campaigns, super PACs, political nonprofits and the party committees.

Here is the split out of how the money was spent according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Presidential Candidates.... $1,377,000,000 House Candidates............. $1,010,000,000 Senate Candidates............ $720,000,000 Party Committees............... $1,800,000,000 Outside Groups................... $1,210,000,000 What troubles me is how so much money can be spent competing for these prized positions and yet once in office so little of the people’s business ever seems to be accomplished. Because of our early production deadlines for the New Years holiday I’m drafting this column five days before we are scheduled to go over the fiscal cliff. I can only hope that when you read this column the cliff has been somehow avoided, be it a last minute agreement or perhaps they get it done with a few hours to spare. Unfortunately I’m not optimistic they will get a deal done. They know what needs to be done but neither side is willing to give any ground and it appears both think the cliff will provide them cover from their constituents.

Prior to the Christmas holiday congressional Republicans were calling out the President and Democratically controlled Senate for not putting forth a plan to avoid the cliff. Now that the President has returned from Hawaii and the US Senate has been reconvened by Sen. Harry Reid they are dishing it back out to the Republicans who will not return until the weekend.

Wouldn’t you think these masterful campaigners who’ve raised so much money and command so much power

could do more than play childish games trying to show each other up and some Dan Alexander how in their Thoughts from self cenBehind the Pressline tered approach think that we buy these foolish antics?

Well, the sad reality is most of us fall into lock step behind our party affiliation. We let them play these games instead of demanding greater accountability.

In a recent Reuters Poll 27 percent of those polled blame Republicans, 16 percent blamed the President, 6 percent blame the Democrats and only 31 percent blame the whole bunch for the fiscal cliff debacle. With numbers like that is it any wonder our national elected officials have found it easy to play politics instead of solving problems? They have us exactly where they want us. We give them everything they want. We treat them like royalty. We are so gracious when they bring home our tax dollars and act as if it’s manna from heaven.

As a nation we should be so overwhelmingly outraged that we find our nation in this position. When it’s their election or re-election at stake these folks demonstrate they know how to get down to business and work tirelessly.

When it is the people’s business or needs, they somehow can’t get out of each others way. We have no one to blame but the person in the mirror and until we refuse to put any money into their re-elections nothing will really change. If we want real change let’s make the funds spent in the 2016 election the least expensive election in U.S. history.

Our life coaches, Style and Substance: On questioning your life Dear style & substance: Do you ever really look in the mirror and wonder who you are, how you got to this point in life, and where you are going? It sounds crazy, but lately I have been questioning everything in my life. I do have a pretty good job and a fairly sound relationship, but seem to ponder this question a lot. I am wondering if others think about this too.

We think that what you are getting at is the question, “what drives my life?”, “what is my purpose?” or as one husband would say, “where am I going with this?” We also think that delving into these questions can energize, simplify, focus and give new meaning to your life. So it is worth exploring!

Anybody with an ounce of awareness thinks these thoughts. Wondering about our place in the world drives everything we do and shapes who we are, who we love, and even the work we do.

Thoughtful people are constantly changing and adapting to the world as we read, learn, and expand our horizons. Questioning is a sign of a keen intellect – this positive stress (eustress) can help motivate you to reflect on your life and can also give you the edge you need to make changes to guide your life in a new direction.

Transitions can often cause these existential questions to consume our waking and sleeping hours. A transition can be hitting a milestone birthday, a child growing up and/or leaving home, a career or relationship change, births, deaths and our body’s natural responses to aging.

Instead of thinking that “something is wrong”, use this time as an opportunity to reflect on your life, to begin to respond to a more positive question, “where am I headed with my life and how does it reflect what I believe in?”. Questioning is not the same as discounting your life up to that specific point in time; rather it is a time to embrace change and take some “calculated risks.” Pondering life’s big questions can be immobilizing if you allow yourself to dwell in the negative – be realistic in your assessment of your self – your strengths and areas you would like to improve.

Real growth and maturity only come from a frank and honest reflection on your life and a commitment to live with purpose. Purpose does not have to be a big idea, living a life of purpose can mean something as simple as being honest in all things, caring for animals, or practicing a faith or religion.

We have come up with two ways of beginning this quest; Firstly, if a negatively driven life is based on

guilt, resentment, fear, need for approval or materialism; then it is easy to see what a positively driven life might feel and look like. It is by tending to these aspects of our life, the barriers to the positive, that we might find the answer. Where do you have unresolved concerns? What are your fears and are they based on reality? How do your actions change by what other’s think? Answering these questions, puts closure on the past and sets us free to resolve the unresolved or to move on.

The positively driven life is led by someone who has forgiven, resolved, reconciled and is not bogged down by guilt. They have tied up loose ends, kept promises, and not made excuses.

And secondly, another good step is to think about a time when you took a risk and it paid off in more happiness or success. What was happening in your life that gave you the courage to try?

Was it a relationship? Did you meet somebody that inspired you or needed you to inspire them?

Breaking down the steps that led you to success can help you replicate those steps to help you achieve a new purpose. Repeat what has worked in the past to set a future course of success.

Lastly, we believe that we are always seeking and reinventing our lives to meet the demands of the moment with the future always on our minds,

It’s time for change To The Burgh: If you live in Essex County, please lend yourself a hand.

Your residence is subject to taxation from town, county maybe village. You vote for a town supervisor and maybe even a mayor, but you don’t vote for someone who’s sole purpose is to represent you at the county. The county budget is 14 times the size of the largest township budget, but no one manages only county business. The supervisors are elected by their town citizenship and attempt to manage both town and county government.

There are 62 counties in New York, only 18 of are administered through supervisory weighted voting from township elected officials. The other 44 counties operator under

legislative government which evenly provides for a small number of board members elected from equally sized established districts within the county. These legislative boards of as few as five members have the sole responsibility to run only the county. The county residents elect both a supervisor for their town and a legislator for the county. When elected officials dedicate their entire energy and skills to one government, better management is achieved.

The managing editor to the Essex County-based Times of Ti, John Gereau, published a news editorial that showed the cost savings with legislative government could be as much as $300,000 annually. Eighteen supervisors are trying to agree on how to run Essex County. Weighted voting puts nearly all the decision power in the hands of three members from our largest townships of North Elba, Ticonderoga and Moriah. You’re currently paying 18 county administrators when only three really run the county.

Jason Torrance from page 1 Once he discovered his love for motion pictures, Torrance started watching movies from every genre that had received good reviews, and then systematically began seeking out directors whose work he enjoyed.

“I started realizing that you have to go with your own tastes,” Torrance said. “A good rating doesn’t necessarily mean a good movie.”

Now, years later, Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch have emerged as two of his favorite directors.

“If mainstream Hollywood is like fast food, Kubrick and Lynch are like gourmet meals,” Torrance said. “Sometimes you can be challenged with something you don’t like to eat, and then you come to appreciate it. Eventually you discover the richness and nutrition of it and you find yourself drawn to it more than less nourishing fare.”

Torrance, who is on the ROTA board of directors, has used ROTA Gallery as a way to make connections, and has met some of his cast at the non-profit art cooperative.

“Two years ago I was thinking of leaving the area because I didn’t see much of a future as a writer and an artist here,”

Torrance said. “This place (ROTA) has been my salvation. Plattsburgh is big enough to have a larger art community, and ROTA is an invaluable venue and community resource.”

For his latest project Torrance cast Kaitlyn Donovan, whom he met at ROTA, as Dorothy, a lead character involved in one of the film’s several tumultuous relationships.

As a photographer, Donovan is more accustomed to being behind the camera, but she has wanted to act since she was young.

She worked with Torrance on a previous project, and agreed to take on the role without reading the script.

me,” Donovan said. “I’m preparing mentally for it, and it will be an interesting role to play. I trust Jason. He’ll make it work.”

Also involved in the film is Corey Bourgeois, who said he sees the project as a way to gain practical experience in filmmaking.

Bourgeois would ultimately like to direct, but in the meantime he is enjoying being involved in any capacity needed to complete the movie.

“I’m just looking for any experience I can get, and this is a good way to do it,” Bourgeois said. “If he (Torrance) needs me to run a camera, I’ll run a camera, if he needs me to set something up, I’ll set something up.”

A wild range of reds holds the piece together, with yellows, blues and black punctuating them, and in the upper left corner, what appears to be a mouth holds a set of small teeth.

One tooth looks to have escaped, and is connected to the orifice via a thin, wavy line.

But then again, maybe the tooth didn’t become free of the mouth, maybe that’s how the mouth acquires new teeth.

Or maybe that isn’t even a mouth at all.

While some artists strive, and sometimes fail, to instill a direct sense of meaning into their work, Curtis prefers to leave that up to the viewer.

“I like to hear what other people have to say about my work,” Curtis said. “I’ve learned a lot about my paintings by listening to others.”

Her newer pieces, like “Baby Teeth,” and one she simply refers to as “The Big One,” reflect a less-direct, almost stream-of-consciousness approach to painting, while her older work seems to be more pointed.

Painting isn’t the only medium she employs, either.

One of Curtis’ sculptures, “The Horse,” is just that—a paper sculpture of a horse.

But it isn’t just a horse. The animal’s back is bent to give the entire piece a circular look, and there are yarn and polymer-forged intestines dangling from its belly.

“I explore death a lot because that’s part of nature’s cycle,” Curtis said. “The way things decompose and get turned into other things is intriguing to me. Humans have an aversion to death, but death isn’t necessarily bad—it’s just a part

of life.”

Curtis likes to incorporate real objects into her art when she can.

The teeth on “The Horse” were made using a cast of Curtis’ own teeth, and there is milkweed fluff imbedded in the polymer discs that hang from the animal’s stomach.

She also used real hair—some of her own, some of her mom’s, and some from her professor ’s sister—to create the animal’s mane, tail and nostril hair.

And then there is the chandelier, which is comprised of a lamp shade from which fawn bones hang like a mobile for a baby coyote.

“I found those fawn bones in the forest, and I liked their delicacy,” Curtis said. “I liked how they were still in the form of an animal.”

Curtis admits that some of her themes might seem morbid, but she insists that they really just explore nature as it is, and adds that a lot of her work, like “Boy with the Pearl Earring,” which was inspired by Johannes Vermeer ’s “Girl with the Pearl Earring,” is done with good humor in mind.

“A lot of my work is humorous,” Curtis said. “I have videos that are just nonsensical and absurd. I think humor is a very important part of the creative process.”

Curtis has been making art her entire life, and utilizes several mediums. She is currently finishing a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from SUNY New Paltz.

Her work has been shown at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts and at various shows in New Paltz.

Curtis’ first solo exhibition, which includes all of the above described pieces, as well as photographs, video, sculptures and oil and acrylic paintings, opened at ROTA Gallery in Plattsburgh on Dec. 30 and runs until Thursday, Jan. 10.

The gallery is open daily from noon-5 p.m., and all of Curtis’ work is for sale.

Too Tall String band to per form PLATTSBURGH — The Too Tall String Band will perform on Jan. 4, at the Palmer Street Coffeehouse at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4 Palmer Street at 7 p.m.

The cost is $10.

The Too Tall String Band is versatile and has a wide array of musical influences. They perform everything from Celtic songs and fiddle tunes to traditional Adirondack tunes and stories, to "roots" country music and even a little bluegrass.

The band has been featured all across the North Country, Southern Quebec and Vermont. Too Tall first performed at the inaugural Watertown Goes Green Irish festival in 1984 and has been a headliner many times since then. Les Troyens Met Live showing LAKE PLACID — A live Met showing of Berlioz’s Les Troyens will be held at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts at 17 Algonquin Way, on Jan. 5 at noon.
