Welcome center falls victim to state’s fiscal crisis

By Chris Morris Special to Denton Publications BEEKMANTOWN — A popular northern New York welcome center is shutting down as a result of New York’s ongoing fiscal crisis.

The “I Love New York” Gateway Welcome Information Center — located in the town of Beekmantown near the Canadian border — will be closed to the public until further notice.

Ron Ofner, executive director of the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council — the organization that operates the center — noted the facility has welcomed millions of visitors to New York and the Adirondack region since opening nearly two decades ago.

The state pulled funding for the center in its budget for fiscal year 2010, Ofner said.

“We haven’t had a contract to operate that facility since April 1 of this year,” he said.

“We’ve been operating the center very judiciously with our own funds. We’ve reduced staff, we’ve reduced hours of operation — we’ve basically been holding out for any kind of funding from the state.”

Ofner said the welcome center is the first facility visitors from Canada see when they cross the border. In fact, he noted some 90 percent of people who stop at the facility are Canadian.

sion, Ofner said. But, the real benefit of the welcome center has been its marketing of the Adirondack region, he added.

“We have an opportunity to steer them in the direction to visit various destinations in the Adirondack region,” he said. “In particular, Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Lake George, different campgrounds, things for children, historic sites — by not having that open we

miss that opportunity. People will just sort of sail right through our area and not have the potential to spend some money with us.”

Officials note record numbers of Canadians are visiting New York, largely due to a favorable exchange rate.

The North Country, in particular, has benefited from Canadian tourism. While the

economic downturn has taken a significant toll state-side, residents of Quebec have not been impacted as much, Ofner said.

“Now, with the exchange rate being basically at par, they’re coming down and visiting us,” he said. “Certainly, for areas like Plattsburgh folks are using the new Plattsburgh International Airport. And they’re visiting all of our tourism destinations, which represents a tremendous opportunity to attract visitors, especially when tourists aren’t coming from the traditional areas, like the New York City metropolitan area.”

Funding may be available to reopen the welcome center in the form of a $75,000 grant from Empire State Development. Ofner said paperwork for the grant has been submitted, although there’s no timeline for the awarding of funds.

Ofner said the center can’t be operated without cash on-hand, but he’s hopeful the situation will work itself out.

“The phrase of the year is ‘cautiously optimistic,’” he quipped. “There is funding in the system, it’s just a question of when that funding is going to be released by the state budget division.”

Tourism officials said they understand the state is going through difficult times.

But, Ofner added tourism is the “name of the game” for the North Country, adding it’s wise for the state to invest in destination marketing.

Local man admits to conducting drug deals, faces prison

Former Hyundai employee allegedly stole vehicles

PLATTSBURGH — A city man has admitted to selling crack and cocaine to local drug buyers.

After a raid took place at a Miller Street apartment where 36-year-old Wiley Goodwin and an accomplice Dante Harris were found with 48 bags of crack-cocaine and four containing powder cocaine all reaching a street value of $6,000. Police also found $1,000 after searching their apartment.

Goodwin has pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. He will return to court April 8 for sentencing and faces up to five years in jail. Harris faces up to three years in prison after his sentencing Feb. 24. The 32-year-old accomplice has pleaded guilty to felony charges of drug possession.

PLATTSBURGH — Julie A. Perry, a former manager of Garvey Hyundai was arrested last week on charges of second-degree grand larceny, four counts of third-degree, four counts of second-degree forgery, and one count of first-degree falsifying business records.

The Altona woman is believed to have falsified paperwork in order to steal more than $50,000 worth of vehicles.

Perry will reappear in court later this month to face the allegations.

Self defense can help with popular New Year’s resolution to get in shape

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — A new year has arrived, bringing resolutions such as losing weight and staying fit. Self defense is one way to do just that.

January is National Personal Self Defense Month which may be a good time to bring safety and fitness together.

David Boise, owner of Villari’s Self Defense Center in Plattsburgh, said there are a variety of reasons people turn to martial arts.

“Even though they say they want health and fitness, deep down inside we all go into martial arts for security,” he explained. “Traditionally martial arts was designed for health and fitness and then it leaned toward self defense.”

The Association for Women’s Self Defense Advancement brings light to some startling statistics — Every single day four women are killed by abusive partners; one in four women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime; and a woman is raped every 46 seconds.

With statistics such as these, Boise said he’s been honoring January as self defense month by offering a women’s self defense class.

“Basically we work on gross motor skills,” he said.

“Gross motor skills ... are the first thing that lead you to a real self defense situation.

There’s a lot of psychological components to it.”

However, Boise has also seen the health benefits of learning self defense.

“I lost 55 pounds my first year,” he said. “It works the body naturally. Not using weights.”

“Now the big thing in fitness is using your own body,” Boise added. “It’s a combination of things — mental, physical, spiritually, finding your center.”

We live in a wild place that continues to get wilder, as the rest of the world becomes more domesticated. We have experienced the return of the moose and bald eagles. Loons still dot the ponds, and peregrine falcons soar over the cliffs. Deer are plentiful, and heritage strains of brook trout remain in remote ponds. There are places where a man, or woman, can still become hopelessly lost. Such is the draw.

Certainly, there remains much to be done.

However, from the viewpoint of someone that usually has his boots on the ground, an oar in the water, an eye on the sky, a flyrod in hand or pine needles underneath his mattress; there is no place I’d rather call home!

I

n an article published in the November 1925 issue of Outdoor Life magazine, the renowned naturalist Aldo Leopold wrote, “Our remnants of wilderness will yield bigger values to the nation's character and health than they will to its pocketbook, and to destroy them will be to admit that the latter are the only values that interest us.”

Leopold’s article, “A Plea for Wilderness Hunting Grounds, Outdoor Life,” written nearly a century ago, detailed the importance of preserving the wild character of public lands.

However, it remains as topical in the current day as it was in 1925. Despite massive state budget cuts, the curtailment of numerous programs, an exodus of DEC’s most experienced staffers, and the continued downturn in the national economy; the North Country’s economy has faired fairly well.

The doom and gloom scenarios that many forecasters had predicted did not strike our region as drastically as it has impacted many others.

Maybe all of our snow created a barrier that served to insulate the region from the severe economic swings that struck states such as Michigan and California.

Last winter, about this time of year, a decision was made to replace the Crown Point Bridge. Following the ensuing explosion, which destroyed the structure, came predictions that the national economy would continue on a downward spiral. In many respects, the forecasts have proven true.

New Yorkers have had to cope with the closures of numerous parks and campgrounds, as school aid decreased dramatically, and roads, bridges and other important infrastructure was allowed to deteriorate.

But despite the economic downturn and possibly, even because of it, evidence indicates that travelers continue to gravitate to natural areas where the opportunities for recreation are inexpensive, readily available and easily accessible.

From a market perspective, this is very good news for the North Country. The Adirondacks, and the dreams of wild places that the name conjures up, have helped the region survive the nation’s economic turmoil to a large extent.

Researchers at the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) have recently detailed an interesting trend, where the economy is actually responsible for driving people back to nature.

Compared to other recreational venues, the outdoors, the woods and waters are a real bargain.

Each year nearly 150 million Americans continue to enjoy the outdoors by hiking, rock climbing, bird-watching, mountain biking, skiing, snowshoeing, paddling, hunting and fishing.

New year brings new resolve Alcohol’s effect on older drinkers

H

ere we are again at the time of the year when we ponder our shortcomings and use the New Year as an excuse for change. I never understood why we usually wait for a certain calendar date to arrive, but we do and it’s here again.

My personal resolutions are often the typical ones heard — work on the waist line, organize the basement, and learn more about a certain technology. Okay, maybe learning a new technology is slightly atypical, but of the three it is the one I am more likely to keep. It may be the thrill of reading for hours in order to learn exactly which selections to make while setting up a device or the joy of making something work. The stimulation of either one definitely trumps a de-cluttered basement.

Professionally, I resolve to better understand and incorporate social technology into the classroom. I have no earthly idea why the kids now-a-days will sit for hours texting on a phone, posting to Facebook, tweeting friends, or consuming YouTube videos. Alright, I get the

I plan to start with a Facebook account that blends a little personal stuff with course-related material. Being techsupport for my classroom/lab and nearly everyone I know, let’s just say I am very rich when it comes to content. I’m not sure if I can do something with Twitter or not, perhaps a decision on that will come after I see how the Facebook effort goes. No matter what, I will be happy to meet one professional resolution before the calendar rolls around again.

ccording to a study published in the journal BMC Research Notes, researchers in the Netherlands studied the effects of alcohol on 13 healthy men and women, all 62 years old or older.

The research participants drank two alcoholic beverages, and then walked on a treadmill. Once they reached a comfortable walking pace, thin blocks were placed on the treadmill belt for them to step over as they came toward them.

The participants all experienced difficulties stepping over the blocks after ingesting alcohol, due to decreased motor skills and reaction times. What is also surprising is the amount of alcohol ingested was not over the legal limit for driving, although clearly there was a degree of impairment. Interestingly, all of the participants said they were unaware of any impairment in their abilities, in spite of the results of the test.

In a similar study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, University of Kentucky researchers recruited 42 men and women ages 50-74 and 26 men and women ages 25-35. The participants were given either alcoholic drinks or placebos and then asked

These studies show even small amounts of alcohol can seriously impact the cognitive and coordination skills of older people. Factor in prescription medications and any pre-existing physical impairments (poor eyesight, hearing problems, etc.) and the potential for a dangerous situation is very real.

The best solution is for older folks to not drive at all after having any alcohol.

Shoo, fly, don’t bother me

B

esides lady beetles, another unwelcome winter guest is the cluster fly.

These are the large, black, pesky flies that show up in bedrooms and on window sills from late fall through early spring. These flies are known as cluster flies, a name that describes their habit of clustering in large numbers inside attics, walls, and similar spaces in our structures.

Cluster flies do not reproduce indoors, and home owners bothered by these pests do not need to fear the flies are hatching from a dead animal or other unpleasant material within the attic or walls. Cluster flies develop as parasites inside the bodies of earthworms. There are three generations of flies produced each summer, and the final generation of the season migrates to houses and other buildings during mid to late September. Casual observation of client reports suggests houses located on an exposed hill top or high ground are most attractive to these migrating flies.

As the flies warm throughout the winter, and especially in the early spring, they come out of their cold temperature dormancy and begin sluggishly moving around. Their random crawling brings them into the house by way of electrical

outlets, window pulley holes, and small openings around windows, moldings and base boards.

Cluster flies are difficult to control in homes because they hibernate within inaccessible places. Because they hide inside walls or under insulation, they are usually not vulnerable to treatment until they appear within the living space of the house. Preventing attic flies is a job for the summer and fall.

As much as possible, seal cracks and openings around the outside of the house, especially under the eaves, as you would for energy conservation.

Unfortunately, there is little that can be done for flies already inside the attic and walls. Space sprays and fogs into the attic have little if any affect, as the flies are usually under insulation or deep in cracks and crevices. They do not fly around much in attics. Therefore, fly paper, fly strips and bug zappers are of no value.

Flies buzzing within a room can be dispatched with a fly swatter, hand vacuum, or shop-vac.

Red Cross: A year in review

T

he Northeastern New York Region of the American Red Cross comprises five chapters serving a population of nearly 1.9 million people in a 14,900 square mile service area. The region reaches from the mid-Hudson V Alley to the Canadian Border, with Chapter offices in Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Albany, Glens Falls and Plattsburgh.

In 2009-2010 fiscal year – Red Cross Chapters in the Northeastern New York Region: • Responded to 325 disasters across the region — primarily house fires.

Trained Volunteers assist families with emergency shelter, clothing and food and support.

• Trained 76,217 people in CPR, first aid, water safety, use of automated external defibrillators, child care pet first aid and care giving.

• Prepared more than 11,000 individuals for disasters through our community disaster initiatives. Free Red Cross preparedness program teach individuals,

families, businesses, and students the basic steps that should be taken to prepare for emergencies.

• Assisted the NYPenn Blood Region in the collection of more that 83,000 units of blood for use in hospitals in our region.

• Provided assistance to more than 9,400 senior citizens and residents in long-term care facilities through our Telephone Reassurance, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and Lifeline Programs.

• Connected 849 military families during critical life moments such as births and deaths in the region. Red Cross staff and volunteers also educated 236 military families about our emergency communication services with our “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” briefing prior to their loved one’s deployment.

The effects of tobacco The health and economic impact of tobacco use in New York State is alarming.

Each year, 25,400 adults die from their own smoking and 3,040 nonsmokers will die from second-hand smoke exposure. At current rates, 389,000 youth (0-17) are projected to die prematurely from smoking.

Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined.

During the 10 years the NYS Tobacco Control Program (TCP) has been operating, adult smokers have been reduced by 500,000 and youth smokers by 75,000. Our work is not done. Over 18 percent of adults smoke and almost 15 percent of high school students smoke. More than $8 billion are spent each year in health care costs directly related to smoking and over $6 billion spent in smoking related productivity losses.

The Tobacco Control Programs in your community are working diligently to decrease youth exposure to tobacco marketing in retail environments; provide help to quit smoking; increase the number of tobacco free outdoor areas, including parks, recreation areas, and worksites; and to create tobacco free college campuses. The tobacco companies spend billions of dollars each year to entice our children to smoke and to keep current smokers smoking. NYS needs to continue to invest in the work of the Tobacco Control Programs to provide tobacco free environments, eliminate tobacco marketing to children, eliminate exposure to second hand smoke, and to motivate adult smokers to quit.

ecember is always the month of Christmas cheer and North Country generosity. If you are an elected official, however, we always worry about the weather, the challenges snow brings, and budgets. The weather cooperated and the difficult budget work is almost completed.

The month started off with the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train which always brings hundreds of people to view the festivities at The Amtrak Station and this year was no exception. I was invited to speak with Dr. Tom Mandeville’s government class which I always enjoy. There was a public hearing held on the controversial proposed utility tax the Plattsburgh School Board was considering implementing. Let’s hope the board listened to the several hundred attendees as the resounding opinion in the city is not to implement this unaffordable tax. I attended the last College/City Coalition meeting for 2010. This group was formed three years ago to positively address student/city issues and I am very pleased with the overall results versus former committees which were negative in

nature. I was proud to participate in the Catherine Gardens ribbon-cutting event which was the first project I fully supported upon my 2006 election as mayor. We are all proud of the completion and ongoing housing project in the center city. Betty and Howard Benjamin held their 2nd Annual Christmas Dinner which provides hundreds of meals for the less fortunate. I am so proud of these two people and the many friends of mine who contributed to this special event. Laurentian Aerospace officials announced the project is still moving forward and hopefully by March an official announcement will be made that the project will begin in earnest. This would certainly be great news for the New Year!

In looking forward to 2011, the difficulties will be many as our friends, neighbors, and business owners are facing unprecedented challenges. The North Country always perseveres, however, and as long as I am mayor I will continue to do my best for the majority of our residents and friends! Happy New Year to everyone!

s we bring 2010 to an end I must honestly say that I am glad to see it go! Yes, there were some great events and progress was made but it has been a difficult year with so many economic challenges for municipalities as well as families. We learn to address the day-to-day issues but it is very difficult to work with uncertainty and fear of the unknown. Many people will begin 2011 still waiting to be called back to work or trying to find job. The recent news about Laurentian Aerospace should energize our community and bring many new opportunities to the Champlain Valley. In general, the economic picture appears to be moving the right direction but it will take time to see lasting improvement. New York State has many financial challenges that will impact our communities in the coming year.

Still, I think this time we may be able to improve our local economy at a faster rate than usual.

I have had the opportunity to participate with a number of groups and work with a number of individuals who share the same

vision of a better tomorrow.

We have begun to take action to make that happen. I believe in 2011 we will find new ways to work together intermunicipal and bipartisan to create a better place to live, work and invest.

The North Country work ethic and ability to take on challenges will surface once again and we will succeed.

My New Year wish for each of you is that new opportunities will come your way and you and your family are able to feel a new confidence in your future. In 2011 we should all pay very close attention to our physical and mental health and take good care of each other. We each need to make a resolution to spend more time with family and loved ones, exercise more and remember the many blessings that we already have!

I look forward to a productive and busy 2011 as we work together to build our community and economic future! Let’s make 2011 a benchmark year!

What to do with that tree Clinton County Landfill now taking Christmas trees for recycling

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SCHUYLER FALLS — Now the holidays have come and gone, it may leave you wondering what you’re going to do with that still fresh-smelling Christmas tree. There’s one place that has you covered.

Craig Squier, general manager of the Clinton County Landfill, said the facility is again accepting Christmas trees for recycling free of charge through Monday, Jan. 31. The annual grace period, which traditionally begins the day after Christmas, waives the $5 fee charged by the landfill for accepting Christmas trees as brush, said Squier.

“It’s a little bit of a savings for them,” said Squier. “We’re glad to be able to do this for the county residents so they can dispose of them at the brush pile where the material is recycled.”

County residents are able to bring their real trees to the landfill where they’ll be directed to the brush pile, said Squier. There, residents can unload their trees into the pile and simply drive off when done.

“It’s really simple,” he said.

The idea of separating trees from other waste in the landfill is not only the law, but environmentally-conscious, said Squier, as the trees are run through a wood chipper in the spring to be used for other projects as mulch.

“And, [trees] are prohibited from going into landfill to conserve space for the type of refuse that needs to go into a lined landfill,” explained Squier. “Christmas trees certainly do not fall into that category.”

The tree recycling program often brings in hundreds of trees by the close of the program, said Squier.

“It’s hard to estimate in terms of volume, but we probably get about 100 to 200 cubic yards of Christmas trees,” said Squier. “There’s literally hundreds of trees.”

Squier noted all trees brought to the landfill brush pile must be free of lights, ornaments, tree-toppers, tinsel and tree stands. Also, if a tree is brought to the landfill in any sort of binding or bag, it must be removed before the tree is left in the brush pile.

“We understand a lot of people will want to bag their trees first to avoid getting needles everywhere,” he said.

Wreaths and centerpieces are also still accepted, provided they are also free of any metal, artificial framework or decorations.

Activists pushing for continued funding of Environmental Protection Fund PLATTSBURGH — A push from environmental activists continues to restore the Environmental Protection fund to its 2009 levels.

The fund was established in 1993, which has allowed Clinton and Essex counties to receive $10 million to $20 million, and Franklin County, $5 million to $10 million. About 99 percent of the money that makes up the fund is provided by the state real-estate tax. Officials question whether the money has been used for quality projects in 2010 and they hope to see better budget planning in the future.

The landfill, located at 286 Sand Road, is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Christmas trees may be dropped off during those hours only. Those wishing to dispose of their trees may also check with the respective municipal departments of public works or highway departments as well as their private trash haulers to see if tree pick-up service is offered, said Squier.

Otherwise, people are welcome to call the landfill at 5635514 with any questions during regular business hours.

Youth Bureau sports certification slated for this Wednesday PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Youth Bureau will be providing a National Youth Sports Coaches Association Introduction to Coaching Youth Sports Certification Clinic for all youth basketball coaches Wednesday, Jan. 5. Bobsled Challenge canceled LAKE PLACID — The 2011 Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge has been canceled, according to its organizer, the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project Inc., Chester, Conn.

The challenge, traditionally held the first weekend after New Year ’s Day, has brought NASCAR and National Hot Rod Association drivers together for the past five years to race modified bobsleds. The event raised funds to further research and development for the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project, which produces American-made bobsleds for the U. S. men’s and women’s Olympic teams.

“The Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge was a five-year plan. We are in the process of developing a different event format incorporating the stars of NASCAR and the NHRA for the future,” said Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project president Phil Kurze. “We will have more information about this later in the winter.”

East Coast Snocross coming to the Crete next weekend Snowmobile racing event comes to town for first time PLATTSBURGH — East Coast Snocross is bringing some serious snowmobile action to town.

The new sanctioning body for snowmobile racing in the Northeast will bring some of the top snocross racers from the eastern United States and Canada to the Crete Memorial Civic Center next Saturday, Jan. 8, and Sunday, Jan. 9. It will be the first time the event — which will be round two of the nine-race 2010-11 East Coast Snocross Series — comes to Plattsburgh.

ECS promoter Phil Whipple said spectators will get an up-close look at the world of snowmobile racing and freestyle exhibition that will leave them wanting more.

“We’ve got a heck of a show planned,” said Whipple. “The sleds will be in the air more than they’re on the snow. What these athletes can do with these sleds is phenomenal ... It’s like NASCAR on snow.”

Already, ticket sales at Della Motorsports and Aaron’s Sales and Leasing have been “brisk,” said Whipple.

“That gets us pretty revved up,” said Whipple. “Hopefully, with the snow in Northern New England and Upstate New York in recent days, we’ll get everybody in that mode, too, and draw a nice crowd.”

And, if that happens, the ECS appearance won’t be the last, said Whipple.

“If we get the response from the fans and the numbers I think we’re going to get, I’d say we’ll come back for a number of years to come,” he said.

Manney returns from regional contest

On Nov. 20, Jordanne competed in the 2010-11 NBA Fit,WNBA Fit Dribble, Dish, & Swish competition through the Clinton County Youth Bureau, completing the challenge in 23.19 seconds — the second highest time in the state.

By doing so, Jordanne made it to the Knicks Training Facility in Tarrytown Dec. 18, competing in the regional competition, which she again received the second highest time — though not enough to send her to the national competition.

“Her foul shot was the catch,” explained her father and basketball coach, David Manney. “It went in and bobbled and popped out and she had to snag it, swish it the second time. But, it was a good experience.”

“A lot of pressure,” Jordanne added. “They didn’t give you enough time to warm up in the beginning. It was three times doing the course and then you had to do it.”

However, Jordanne did notice there was a lot of support from all the parents while she was competing.

Although she won’t be heading off to the national competition in Los Angeles, Jordanne will be returning to Tarrytown this weekend for a New York Knicks versus Indiana Pacers game, having received two complimentary tickets from the NBA. She and her competitors will also be acknowledged during the game.

Jordanne said she is already planning on competing in the local competition again next year, something she hopes others her age will consider as well.

“I would tell them what you earn and what could happen if you won,” she said.

David also hopes others will consider competing next year.

“We’d like to see more kids come and actually try out,” he said.

Eleven-year-old Jordanne Manney just returned from Tarrytown where she competed in the regional Dribble Dish & Swish competition. She’ll head back to Tarrytown this weekend for a New York Knicks game.

Martine to discuss biodiversity Jan. 7 PLATTSBURGH — Dr. Chris Martine, with the Department of Biological Sciences at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, will be the featured speaker at a meeting of the Algonquin chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club Friday, Jan.7.

Martine’s discussion, “Chasing Nightshades: Biodiversity Adventures in the Amazon, the Andes, and the Outback,” will be held in the second floor meeting room of the old Clinton County Courthouse, 137 Margaret St., beginning at 7 p.m.

Martine has participated in research expeditions to the Australian bush country, the Amazon Basin, and the Peruvian Andes for the past two years. He will discuss how these experiences have helped him develop not only a greater understanding of global biodiversity, but a broader perspective on learning to better appreciate and conserve that biodiversity.

The presentation will include an introduction to Martine’s research in botany, photos from his trips, and an overview of his thoughts on the biodiversity issues faced both locally and globally. Open discussion will follow.

The second annual Zumbathon fundraiser hosted at Gilligan’s Getaway Dec. 4 collected donations for the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties and The Christmas Bureau. The two-hour, donation-based event involved 20 Zumba instructors leading approximately 70 participants in an exercise class. The mystique of Roadside Mystic jeremiah@denpubs.com KEENE VALLEY —Three years ago, Roadside Mystic was born.

The band was formed in Keene Valley where founding members Brad Hurlburt and Russ cook live and grew out of their collaboration on a now-defunct band and their shared passion for old country blues and late 1960s, early 1970s rock.

“We really hit it off while learning the covers, so we just kept studying and learning together after that band broke up,” said Hurlburt.

The two initially played as an acoustic duo known as Back Porch Society, a moniker they still play under today on a regular basis. However, Roadside Mystic emerged when Hurlburt and Cook wanted to branch into an electric four-piece group with bassist Derek Lavoie and drummer Scott Renderer.

“It started getting confusing for our friends and fans as to what they were going to see when they came out to watch us play, so we decided to give the electric project its own name and identity,” explained Hurlburt.

Since then, Roadside Mystic has played several venues, bring-

ing their “straight ahead rock and roll” to places like The Waterhole in Saranac Lake, Zig Zags in Lake Placid, the Recovery Lounge in Upper Jay, and the Great Range in Keene Valley, among other locations.

“We tend to like players from the Hill Country of northern Mississippi, although we, of course, listen to Delta players, as well as ragtime players, like Blind Blake, from the Piedmont,” Hurlburt said, talking about some of the band’s musical influences.

Though the band members have each played in Plattsburgh before, their first time playing together as Roadside Mystic will be next Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Monopole. Hurlburt said the band is “really excited about the show.”

“I love Plattsburgh,” said Hurlburt, who is a city native and graduate of Plattsburgh High School and the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. “I love my life in Keene Valley, but, for a part of me, Plattsburgh will always feel like home. It can be a very blue collar city, but it also has a surprising amount of cultural things going on without being pretentious, which is one of the things I really love about the city.”

New concert venue to benefit all ages

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Since the closing of Coffee Camp in November, there has yet to be another all ages venue to allow “extreme music.” Until now.

Matt Hall, Webmaster of DIY Plattsburgh, has been wanting an all ages show to come back to Plattsburgh and has finally found a way of doing so.

Hall said he was contacted by Matt Spiegel from Olive Ridley’s after Spiegel read the article “Web site aimed to build community, local arts scene,” in the Oct. 30 edition of the ‘burgh.

“There was a callout [in the article] for anyone who wanted to donate a space and Brian and Matt over at Olive Ridley’s saw that and they were very interested in working with me, so they offered up a space,” explained Hall.

On Jan. 8, at 8 p.m., the first all ages concert will be held at the former Backstreet, 30 Marion Place, in the basement below Olive

“Most of the local bands in the area play some kind of metal and there’s just no venue for them, besides Castaways or ... Therapy, but those are all 18 and over,” said Hall.

However, the first concert will feature the bands Kids, Lie Captive, Irradiated Beef, and Long Cat — all with a hardcore sound.

Hall said he wanted an all ages venue to help the empowerment of youth.

“I just feel that it is really powerful when you’re empowering youth and showing them they can do things they want to do without compromising their beliefs and themselves,” he said.

However, Hall said he also understands there may be some leery parents who may not want their children to be a part of that environment.

“There’s a lot of stigma about more aggressive forms of music and the kind of behavior that goes on at those kinds of shows,” he explained, adding he has dealt with a lot of violent bands in the past. “But,

it’s easy to point out who those bands are and to avoid working with them.”

“I’ve never chosen to work with those kinds of bands and I’ve been doing shows in my own home for the last three or four years now and I’ve never had any sort of negative instance,” Hall added. “These are very sweet, genuine people who just want to share their art with people.”

The show will have a $5 cover charge and Olive Ridley’s will also be selling beverages such as juice, soda and water.

“We’re going to be taking in money at the door to help pay for the bands and then I’ll give what I need to the bands and the excess will go towards the use of the space,” said Hall.

Hall added he also hopes to utilize the space for local visual artists and continue concerts on a biweekly basis.

PERU — Christopher R. Jandreau, 31, passed away Dec. 22, 2010.

Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at St. Augustine’s Church, Peru.

Arrangements were with Hamilton Funeral Home, Peru.

PLATTSBURGH — Malcolm White, an inmate at Clinton County Jail has admitted to repeatedly assaulting staff there. The 24-year-old’s most recent attack was in November when he assaulted a female officer, leaving her hospitalized with injuries.

Last week, White pleaded guilty to five counts of second-degree assault for the staff assaults. White will be sentenced Jan. 10.
