The holidays ar e a festive time of year , but they can also pr ove stressful for the millions of people who travel to visit friends and family or use time of f during the holidays to go on vacation.

Because so many people travel during the holidays, airports ar e more crowded than usual and the nation's roadways often experience heavy traf fic, especially on the days immediately befor e and after a holiday.

While there's not much travelers can do to reduce the number of fellow travelers come the holiday season, ther e are certain dos and don'ts that can make holiday travel much easier .

DO plan ahead. Leaving holiday travel plans until the last minute is a r ecipe for disaster . Some air travelers feel it's mor e affordable to book flights in the weeks leading up to the holidays rather than months in advance. While it's possible to find last minute airline deals, it's very possible such deals will put travelers on standby. That's potentially disastrous during a travel season that has fr equent flight delays or cancellations due to inclement weather . Book travel plans as early as possible to avoid the hassles of last minute bookings.

DON'T blame airport staff if things go awry. The holiday season can be stressful for those who have to travel, but it's exceedingly str essful for the men and women who work in the travel industry. Airline employees, particularly those who work at ticket counters, ar e too often tr eated poorly by travelers who need someone to blame for flight delays and cancellations. The same goes for the people who work at bus or train stations. Regardless of how inconvenient interr upted travel plans can be, it's never the fault of the person working at the airport. It's often a r esult of inclement weather , which is something no one can contr ol.

Should travel plans be delayed or cancelled, r emain courteous, compassionate and respectful of staff. Doing so is the right thing to do, and it might just garner you some consideration when the time comes to reschedule plans.

DO insure your trip. As mentioned above, flight delays and cancellations are common during the holiday season. Heavy snowfall can wreak havoc on travel plans, even for those people who live in r elatively temperate climates. T ravelers traveling to or from r egions wher e heavy snowfall is a possibility should always protect themselves against flight cancellations or delays by insuring their trips. Insurance is often inexpensive and can protect travelers if their flight plans go awry. The peace of mind insurance provides can also reduce the stress of holiday travel.

DON'T try to make up for lost time. While ther e's little air travelers can do to make up for lost time, those traveling by automobile often try to make up for lost time by driving aggr essively.

Nothing could be mor e dangerous, as the r oads are often overcrowded and driving conditions during the holidays ar e rarely ideal. Even if a traf fic jam or other delay makes it impossible to stick to your travel schedule, don't risk disaster with aggr essive driving. Instead, call your destination and explain you will be a little late because of delays on the r oadway. No matter wher e you ar e going, be it a hotel or to a friend or family member's house, they will understand the situation and they will certainly prefer you get there safe and sound, even if that means getting there a little later than originally planned.

DO be an early bird. The early bird gets the worm, and when it comes to holiday travel, the early bir d can also significantly reduce the stress of traveling. If traveling by air, get to the airport extra early. This way you won't have to fr et when the lines at baggage check or security checkpoints ar e long. If traveling via automobile, get up early and hit the road before most drivers are even out of bed. It might not be fun to get up so early , but you will likely start your trip of f with little to no traf fic.

DON'T overdo it. It's tempting to try to see everyone during the holiday season, but most travelers would pr efer to stay in one place for mor e time than to continue traveling fr om place to place without spending much time at any one place. T raveling too much can lead to exhaustion, which is especially danger ous for those traveling by automobile. If possible, spread out holiday travel as much as you can, and attempt to spend at least two nights sleeping in the same bed befor e hitting the road again.

Holiday travel doesn't have to be so dif ficult. Adhering to a few dos and don'ts can make this year's holiday travel far less stressful.

HOLIDAY traditions

Much of what makes the holiday season so special is the traditions that people hold dear. While families have traditions that stretch back decades, there is plenty of opportunity to embrace new means of celebration to br eathe new life into Christmas, Chanukkah or the season's other holidays.

Chances are you're already hanging stockings or going car oling this year. You can add some of these and modify as they fit for your family.

1. Feed the wildlife. During the cold days of winter, birds and small animals that don't hibernate may find it difficult to forage for food. By trimming an outdoor pine tree in edible snacks you'll have a beautiful tree and one that benefits the wildlife as well.

String peanuts and other nuts for the squirrels. Make little ornaments out of suet and string for the birds. Berries and corn can be enjoyed by all. Be sure to choose a tree that is far enough away from the home, so you don't have too many scavengers hunting and pecking around the house.

2. Create a photo Advent calendar. Make your own Advent calendar that has small doors that open up to photos of dif ferent family members. Or use a collection of children's pictures that showcase how they've changed as they've grown older.

3. "Adopt" a child for holiday gifts. Each year you can bring a smile to a child in need by purchasing a present for an underprivileged kid. Some post offices sponsor "Letters from Santa" events where participants can respond to one of the thousands of letters mailed to The North Pole. Or work with a local charity that organizes events to bring gifts to children in hospitals or in foster care.

4. Holiday story countdown.

Every night in December watch a movie or read a story that tells an uplifting holiday tale. Use this as a method of counting down until Christmas. On the night prior, reading "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" should suffice.

5. Remember someone who has passed on.The holiday season is one made beautiful by lit candles and twinkling lights. Remember a loved one or a friend who has passed away by lighting a remembrance candle in his or her honor. It's a way this person can still be part of the festivities.

6. Have a holiday sing-a-long.

Sure it may be tradition to go around the neighborhood singing carols, but it's just as fun indoors.

Have a singing party where guests are given lyrics to popular tunes they can sing around the piano or karaoke machine.

7. Bring some joy to a public servant. Police officers, firefighters, military personnel ... many of these workers do not get of f for the holidays. There are a certain number of public servants who must remain on call in the event of an emergency. Treat these people to something enjoyable when they may be missing their own festivities. Cook or cater a meal for a fire house, deliver cookies to the police station or put together care packages for people living on a military base.

8. Banish the holiday blues. When the holidays are set to go for another year, many people find they become a little down. After all, a home that was once filled with merry trinkets may now go back to the bare essentials. Create a tradition where everyone in the family receives one more gift -- a personalized ornament that can be packed away for use next year -- that's given in January befor e the decorations are packed away.

It's another opportunity to open a present, and it symbolizes looking forward to the joy of next year.

Prepare The first step to wrapping is to have all of the supplies in one place.

There are some people who have actually dedicated small r ooms as gift-wrap stations. While you don't have to go this far , find a large table and keep your tape, tags, paper, ribbon, scissor, pen, and other accessories nearby.

While people are ho-ho-ho-ing and hustling and bustling, pets may not be as enamored with the holiday season as their human counterparts. That's because, amid the blur of activities that fill the season, there are potential sources of stress and dangers to pets.

Check out these pet friendly holiday safety tips.

What can be so dangerous about holiday festivities and decorations? A lot, according to veterinarians and pet advocacy experts. The ASPCA, among other groups, warns of the toxic items and unhealthy treats that abound this time of year.

Approximately 1,300 people are treated each year in emergency rooms for injuries related to holiday lights. Another 6,200 are treated for injuries related to holiday decorations and Christmas trees.

These injuries are occurring to people who know better. Just think about the pets that do not understand the dangers around them. Pet parents have to be responsible for their animals' safety, too.

Know What's Toxic Everything from snow globes to tinsel can wreak havoc on pets' delicate intestinal systems. Many holiday plants, like holly and poinsettia, contain oils that can be fatal to pets if consumed. Snow globes often contain antifr eeze, which is well known as toxic to pets. Snow sprays and snow flock contain chemicals that can be irritants if inhaled or consumed. T insel and pine needles can cause choking and intestinal obstr uction if consumed by smaller animals, like cats and r odents.

Decorating Dangers Decorative glasswar e, trinkets and other breakables can pr ove hazar dous to animals. Inquisitive dogs and cats may br eak glass ornaments and be cut by shar ds of glass. It's easy for lit candles to be knocked over and even Christmas tr ees to be pulled down by boister ous pets. W ater kept in Christmas tr ee stands and other decor may harbor harmful micr oorganisms or chemicals that become danger ous if lapped up. Cor ds and lights may look like chew toys to r odents, dogs and cats, who can become electrocuted or strangled while investigating.

Goodie Gluttony Many pets have stolen a piece of people food fr om her e or ther e or have been offered some table scraps. Ther e are some items that can be danger ous during the

holidays and year r ound. Beware of feeding pets fatty meats, gravies, poultry skin, poultry bones, chocolate, and alcohol.

These items can cause illnesses from vomiting and diarr hea to highly serious pancreatitis and other toxic reactions. Remove trash fr om the house r egularly while entertaining to ensure pets don't get inside of garbage cans and trash bags to steal scraps. When eating, keep pets out of the dining ar ea and maintain a close eye on scavengers who might leap for dishes at the edges of tables. Gifts, like food baskets and boxes of chocolates, should be kept out of r each of pets. Buy pet-safe tr eats this time of year to reward animals so they will not be inclined to steal snacks.

Holiday Stress Having a houseful of people can be stressful on pets who are not used to the company. Talk with a veterinarian to see if a mild sedative or anti-anxiety medication might be helpful. Otherwise, keep pets contained in a quiet room away from guests if they are prone to skittishness. Try to keep feeding and watering schedules consistent so the pets will have the comfort of their routines. Be sur e to spend time with the animals so they ar e not feeling neglected while you're running here and there.

The holidays can be a wonderful time of year to shar e with your pets, but safety should never be too far out of mind when preparing for the season.

Origins of a holiday staple The thick, spiced drink we know as eggnog has become synonymous with the holidays. It is so linked with the Christmas season that a person may be har d-pressed to find it sold in the supermarket any other time of the year. But eggnog wasn't always the holiday beverage it has become.

Eggnog is believed to have originated in 17th century Eur ope, primarily as a drink for the elite, since the ingredients in the beverage were hard to come by and thusly r elegated to the very rich.

There are different theories on the origins of the wor d eggnog itself. Some believe it has gotten its name from the Old English word "nog," which meant "strong beer." The "egg" refers to one of the ingredients in the beverage, fresh eggs. Others surmise that it comes fr om the word "noggin," which was a vessel for serving drinks in taverns. The drink was called "egg in a noggin," which was shortened to "eggnog." Still, ther e are others who say its name is derived fr om the term "grog," which was another term for booze. "Egg n' gr og" was eventually abbreviated to "eggnog."

Recipes that a cheerful holid

Although there is little certainty to the origins of the name, the r ecipe for eggnog has essentially remained unchanged throughout the centuries. It consists of beaten eggs, cream or milk and sugar mixed with some sort of alcoholic spirit. The Old English were believed to mix it with wine, though once the drink was br ought to the New World, colonists substituted rum for the wine. Rum was r eadily available through tradesman running between the Americas and the Caribbean and therefore less expensive than another spirit. As America grew and eggnog was enjoyed in different parts of the country, the rum was replaced with regional spirits, including bourbon or grain alcohol. Other ingr edients were also added to give it a customized flavor . However, the use of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves has become traditional flavors for the holiday br ew.

Although eggnog is widely enjoyed thr oughout the holiday season, in the past it was served at special events and social occasions. As a warmed beverage it can easily chase away winter's chill. This is how it may have come to be enjoyed primarily during the holidays.

Love it or hate it, eggnog is a drink that can evoke str ong feelings of the holidays within minutes. Sweet facts Candy canes are very popular holiday treats and are often used to decorate Christmas trees. That hooked shape certainly makes them whimsical and able to hang on tree boughs. But candy canes wer en't always the curved and colorful tr eats they are today. In the 1700s, candy canes wer e nothing more than straight white sticks of sugar candy used to decorate Christmas trees.

A choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral decided that having the ends bent to depict a shepherd's crook and passing them out during church services would help keep childr en quiet. It was not until r oughly the 20th century that candy canes acquired their red stripes. Some surmise that the candy cane is shaped like a shepherd's crook to represent Jesus Christ, who tended to his flock of supporters. Others say that it's a "J" for Jesus. Regar dless of their shape, hundreds of thousands of candy canes ar e now manufactured and shipped for the holiday season each year.

1. In a small bowl, stir together confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing is too thick, add more corn syrup.

2. Divide the icing into separate containers to add choice of colors. Mix until well blended.

3. Use a piping tip and pastry bag to outline the cookie in a thin bead of the icing. Allow to dry.

• Create a meal concept. Holiday meals can be traditional or avant garde. There are many options from which to choose, but one thing to keep in mind is to select foods that go together. Those new to holiday hosting may want to stick with items that are well known and expected, such as

turkey and trimmings. Those who want to experiment may want to introduce one or two new dishes into the mix. Food choices should be about what your guests will want to eat and not about which items will ensure a spectacle.

• Keep preparation time in mind.

Another thing to consider when planning the meal is the amount of time you have for food pr eparation and cooking. The holidays are a busy time of the year, and work and social engagements may continue up until the eleventh hour.

pantry. Look at expiration dates and be sure that everything is top quality. If in doubt, add it to your shopping list. Make a list of things that can be bought in advance (paper products, coffee, linens, etc.) and other items that need to be checked off closer to the actual holiday. Cross off each item once it is purchased.

• Create a timetable. Make a schedule or use a calendar to schedule when each component of the meal and other preparations will be made. This way you ensure you will stay on track and have everything done by the actual holiday.

• Ask for help. If you find that time will be short, delegate some jobs to others. For example, if a grandmother or aunt is known for her prized potatoes or pies, ask her to make that item. Some hosts and hostesses turn the holiday meal into a pot luck where everyone is encouraged to bring one

early everyone has a last minute holiday shopping horror story to tell. Be it a lateseason grab for a child's must-have gift or fighting fellow procrastinators for a parking spot come the waning days of the season, veteran shoppers have experienced it all.

While those with more experience might know the tricks of the late season shopping trade, novice procrastinators might need a few of the following tips to make it through the season without a horror story of their own.

• Consider online r etailers. Shopping online might not be for everyone, but those without much time might want to consider online retailers, many of which guarantee delivery of the item by Christmas Day for or ders placed as late as December 20. In addition, some r etailers even guarantee delivery if the or der is placed by December 22, but such guarantees often r equire consumers to choose overnight delivery, which can be costly.

When shopping online, if no gifts stand out, consider buying an electr onic gift certificate instead. Such certificates can often be deliver ed dir ectly to a loved one's e-mail inbox, and it only takes a matter of seconds for the delivery to be made. Though some find this impersonal, nowadays many people would prefer a gift card instead of another sweater.

• Consider a monthly gift. As a nice bottle of wine or a package of gourmet cheeses proves, not all great gifts need to be picked up at the mall. A monthly gift like a magazine subscription or a membership to a monthly club (i.e., "Pastry of the Month") are gifts that keep on giving all-year. Late-season shoppers will find these options especially appealing as they can almost always be ordered in just a few minutes, whether it's over the phone or via the Internet.

• Don't abandon the mall entirely. Though procrastinators are in no danger of becoming extinct, most people do get their holiday shopping done well in advance of Christmas Day. As a r esult, truly last minute shoppers might find the mall isn't so crowded on Christmas Eve.
