No charges in Indian Lk. church death
This Week Coaches vs. Cancer comes to Indian Lk.
By Maggie Morgan maggie@denpubs.com
INDIAN LAKE Ñ The Hamilton County District AttorneyÕ s office will not pursue charges in connection with the death of Jason Berg after the 44-year-old Indian Lake resident interupted services at St. MaryÕ s Roman Catholic Church in June. Ò His death, although a tragic event, was not a crime and, as a result, I see no basis on which to convene a grand jury to hear the uncontroverted evidence revealing during this investigation,Ó wrote District Attorney Marsha King Purdue in a news release announcing the findings. On June 28, Berg was found unresponsive after a dangerous struggle during mass at St. MaryÕ s church. With the help of the State Police, the SheriffÕ s Department, and Forensic Patholigist Dr. Michael Sikirica, and several homicide prosecutors in New York, the DAÕ s office has determined that the actions that led to BergÕ s death were within the standards outlined in our Penal Law, eluding to the self defense efforts that were used to protect church goers that day. Three 23.5 ounce cans of Ò Four LokoÓ were found in BergÕ s home, and video surveillance captures him purchasing the 12-percent alcoholic beverages three hours before his death. The autopsy concluded that BergÕ s BAC was three times the legal limit. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

‘Feelin Long Lakey’ honors Wounded Warriors By Maggie Morgan maggie@denpubs.com
LONG LAKEÑ All across the country, people become polar bears to support a cause. Brave souls cannon ball into icy waters to show their support.
In Long Lake, that cause is the Wounded Warriors Project, and for the third year, divers will swim and shiver to raise some cash as part of the FeelinÕ Long Lakey Polar Bear Plunge Saturday, Dec. 27. Long Lake chose to iden-

INDIAN LAKE Ñ With the recent resignation of Bill Zullo from the position as Town Historian, a portion of this monthÕ s Indian Lake Town Board Meeting was dedicated to finding interested persons to fill the position. Supervisor Brian Wells mentioned that he has been approached by two interested parties and asked the remainder of the Board how they would recommend moving forward. Councilwoman Sally Stanton made a point of the fact that the position is one that carries a stipend and,
as such her feeling was that the position should be advertised and applicants asked to respond with their qualifications. The remaining board members responded with motions to advertise the position and went on to unanimously approve doing so. The decision was made to request in the ad that interested parties respond with their qualifications in writing by 4 p.m. on Jan. 12, in time for the next regular board meeting. Afterward the responses would be reviewed and interviews would quickly follow to allow consideration of the interview committeeÕ s recommendation during the February timeframe.
Department head comments Town Activities Coordinator Vonnie Liddle explained the Adirondacks 102 pamphlet, book and program and informed the board that the town is participating in this in the hopes that it will bring visitors to Indian Lake to visit businesses and get their books stamped. Additionally, Liddle provided board members copies of North Country Living, highlighting the snowmobiling article that begins on page 13 of the current (vol. 3 no. 4) issue. The article makes numerous direct mentions of Indian Lake in headline and body text of the article. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
