INDIAN LAKE Ñ The popular classic Ò The Sound of MusicÓ will be presented by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts Director Danielle Melendez said the inspiration to present Ò The Sound of MusicÓ came about in a funny way. Ò While we were doing Ô Miracle on 34th StreetÕ last year we had so many kids running around and having such a good time that my stage manager at the time leaned over to me during tech and said, Ô donÕ t you see those kids as the Von Trapps in the Ô Sound of Music,Õ Ó he said. At first, Melendez laughed it off, but the more the idea was developed and the more the company talked about it, the more they became convinced that it would be perfect for 2014Õ s holiday show. The musical encompasses countless aspects that make it a very fitting holiday production; audiences root for the family to come together and can sing along to the cheery, familiar tunes. The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts (ALCA) has been around for more than 40 years, delivering many services to 2,000 square miles of the Adirondack Park. The center serves the non-profit sector as a presenter, producer and educator in artistic disciplines. The traveling theater company is comprised of both professional actors as well as members of the community.

MINERVA Ñ ThereÕ s a new club that has started up in Minerva, and itÕ s a welcome addition to the activities available to kids. ItÕ s part of the 4-H set of clubs located throughout the country and the world, and in Minerva, itÕ s called The Nature Club. The 4-H system (the 4-H four-leaved clover that is so well-known stands for these: Head, Heart, Hands, Health) is often associated with agricul-

ture, but this groupÕ s organizers settled on an outdoors/nature theme for its club. Like 4-H clubs worldwide, members of The Nature Club will learn citizenship and leadership skills as well as various life skills. Begun this past September, The Nature Club has already been active, starting with an effort to become a visible part of the community. It set up a display at SullivanÕ s Store in Olmstedville as a means to advertize itself and let parents know that the club is ready to involve kids in its activities. Fourteen kids have enrolled in the club, which wel-

comes youth from around the area. In October, the members waited tables at Applebees in Queensbury and bagged items at Tractor Supply, all as part of an initial fundraising effort. Haley Killon of Olmstedville, one of the two leaders of this club (the other is Cindy Carpenter of Warrensburg), is very enthusiastic about this new chance for kids to get involved in a great group. Ò WeÕ ve got a great group of kids, and they are all excited about the club,Ó she said. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7
