LONG LAKE Ñ Long Lake Central School will be competing at the Lime Rock Park Speedway on Oct. 24 in Lakeville, Conn. Nine members of the team will travel on the two day field trip, first stopping at GE Global Research in Niskayuna, before heading to the competition. Electrathon America is an organization that states their mission is, Ò to create and develop a sport that improves public awareness and understanding of electric vehicles through continuously improving vehicles and rules.Ó Students are put to the test in an array of subject matter math, science, design, physics and the like - and asked to put their knowledge to practical use. A safe and efficient elecrtrically powered vehicle is the goal which teams create together to use in competition. The Long Lake Central School Electrathon Car Club has been busy preparing for the upcoming event. Ò Electrathon Car Club Driver Training,Ó is listed almost daily on LLCSÕ calendar, proving this group takes the competition seriously and will feel comfortable and prepared in trusting their vehicles. Electrathon America is an innovative way to teach students hands on uses for what they learn in class. Kids gather together to be interested in a common goal, have a unique hobby, and call on classroom knowledge to complete their mission. This kind of organization is especially relevant for students growing up in a Ò green-age.Ó Competitors can study effective ways to conserve energy and learn about the future of electric cars. INDIAN LAKE Ñ On the morning of Oct. 6, workers from Eggan Environmental Services of Rome hired by the New York State Department of Environmental Conversation (NYSDEC) began the process of cleaning up contamination from an Evans Mills property presumed owned by Mark T. Brand, Superintendent of the Indian Lake Central School District. It is alleged that Brand owes $220,551 in property taxes, as well as water and sewer fees dating back to 1992. Contributing to the complexity of the issues sur-
rounding the three-acre parcel on the villageÕ s North Main Street is the fact that it has been found to be contaminated. The property was a gas station prior to its purchase by Romark Construction, Co. which was owned by Mark and Robin Brand at the time of purchase. Though Romark went bankrupt in 1996 and dissolved in 2001, Brand continued to collect rents from tenants at the property, while he ignored tax and fee bills. It is BrandÕ s contention that he does not own the property but merely serves as its caretaker. However, according to Jefferson County Attorney David J. Paulsen, the Brands presumably became the
owners of the property in 2001 when they voluntarily decided to dissolve the bankrupt corporation. It is PaulsenÕ s contention that when shareholders dissolve a corporation Ò by proclamationÓ under state Corporate Business Law, as the Brands did, they usually assume ownership of the corporationÕ s assets. The clean up project is reported to cost less than $100,000 and involves the removal of a pair of 6,000-gallon tanks, underground piping and contaminated soil from the site. The DEC used data from an environmental assessment of the site conducted previously by JefCONTINUED ON PAGE 7
