BRANT LAKE — Eighteen-year-old Abe Studler is on his way to becoming the next Adirondack Olympian on the United States ski team, but the trail to get him there is as steep as it is expensive. In an attempt to combat the financial burden of rising travel costs to attend competitions, the Studler family is planning the second in a series of area fundraisers to benefit Abe’s Olympic dream — a bicycle ride through his hometown of Brant Lake, starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22. The ride is set to begin and end at The Hub on Market Street, and riders are given the choice of a 22 or 33 mile route. Following the ride, participants are invited to enjoy a complimentary lunch

and live music, courtesy of the Studler family. The registration fee is $25. Abe has been skiing since he was 18 months old, learning to navigate the slopes at Gore Mountain in North Creek and through regular weekend trips to Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid. “He got really good, really fast,” recalled his father, Don Studler. So fast, in fact, that by five years old he was skiing all the black diamond trails at Whiteface, and by nine he had earned himself a spot on both the alpine and mogul teams there, sponsored by the New York Ski Educational Foundation. From there, Abe went on to earn the top prize in the Eastern U.S. Championships in both the B division and the A division — the latter including all the top skiers in the U.S., even those on the

First Wilderness welcome center a success By Ryan Edwards

NORTH CREEK — A new welcome/information center established by a Warren County Planning Department program called First Wilderness opened its doors in the Smith’s Restaurant building in North Creek on Friday, Aug. 7. The center is designed to showcase the activities and improvement

projects of surrounding communities, with a daily schedule that coincides with that of the Saratoga-North Creek Railway scenic train. As she will continue to do for the rest of the season, Tina DeMarsh, owner of North Country Tours and 20-year tour guide, boarded the train in Saratoga and rode alongside its passengers to North Creek, acting as a step-on guide for anyone interested to know more about the area. >> Story Continued | pg. 3

RAQUETTE LAKE — Steve Murdock of Raquette Lake is awaiting a kidney transplant, currently traveling three times a week to Utica for dialysis. Naturally, these treatments are an unexpected and burdening expense. In an attempt to alleviate some of the financial burden of these unexpected expenses, Murdock’s colleagues at Raquette Lake Supply have organized a fundraising event from which all proceeds will be donated to help cover any and all medical expenses associated with the transplant. On Saturday, Aug. 15, from 1 until 6 p.m., residents and visitors are invited to the Village Green next to Raquette Lake Supply for a day filled with live music, food, raffles, dunking booths, snow cones and more. A number of prizes have been donated by merchants throughout the area, many of which will be offered in a Chinese auction and raffles throughout the day. 50/50 tickets have been on sale throughout the month of July, and a substantial payout is expected for the winner. >> Story Continued | pg. 4
