LETTERS TO THE EDITOR to hype heat. For the record, climate is the forward-running, conventionally 30-year mean of day-to-day barometric, precip, temp & wind data. Pre-judice (emotion, stereotypes & fact-free fantasy) doesn’t shape what Mr. Rossi terms my “opinion.” Post-judice (judgment based on long-term observation of verified reality) does, though it isn’t (yet) in the dictionary. Taxpayers like us naturally want & should be able to believe post-judice guides all public “servants” living off our $$$. That too often we cannot trust them is tragic - and not just on climate. Like most folks, I was shocked to learn, for instance, the “Fed” hasn’t 1 cent in reserve, isn’t federal & serves banks, not us (http://www.perseus.ch/wpcontent/uploads/2012/03/ The_Federal_Reserve_System.pdf) . On climate, finally, I can share with fellow-readers - if our Editor consents – added nuggets from a hard-metal treasure trove unimpeachably showing, alas, just HOW much hooey we’ve all been fed.

Just 41 of 11,944 published climate-science papers back the “Man is to blame”

To the Editor, Just 41 of 11,944 published climate-science papers back the “Man is to blame” Global Warming “Consensus” Word limits alone, Mr. Rossi, kept me from earlier sharing the 99.7% consensus that Nature (our Sun) drives climate change (https://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/09/03/cooks97-consensus-disproven-by-a-new-paper-showing-majormath-errors/ & https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/ s11191-013-9647-9)! Straight out of Orwell’s Ministry of “Truth,” instead, comes Obama’s 12/01/2015 claim (http:// www.cnsnews.com/news/article/barbara-hollingsworth/ obama-ups-climate-change-consensus-paris-995-scientists) that “99.5%” of scientists say Man is the driver! That NASA/NOAA/HadleyCRU also are dishing deception is no less impeccably proven & peer-reviewed (https://thsresearch.files.wordpress. com/2017/05/ef-gast-data-research-report-062717.pdf). That ex-NASA-GISS-head Hansen (degreed astronomer, self-crowned “climatologist”) has also been dis-informing us is documented here by yet another peer, Professional American Meteorological Society (AMS) Member, 21-year-vet USAF Weather Officer, then Army Meteorologist R. COMMENTARY

From the Mayor

Divided we stand

Colin Read

Mayor of Plattsburgh, readc@cityofplattsburgh.ny,gov

O

ur leaders recently administered two important votes. Too often, two worldviews are pitted against each other. In close votes, usually as many lose as “win.” That’s no victory. The federal issue was one of access to affordable health care for the uninsured. I’m sure you have your own views on the issue. I can’t imagine an issue much more complicated and multidimensional than that one. Ultimately, a repeal and redesign of the program failed by a single vote. Surely the nation is not divided at precisely 50/50. Locally, the Plattsburgh Common Council narrowly passed, by a tiebreaker, four resolutions that will help stabilize taxes and trim city spending significantly. As with every decision, some are helped and some hurt, perhaps even profoundly. That’s why they are decisions and not no-brainers. However, it’s highly unlikely the overall population of the city or region is ever evenly divided on these issues. Such official decisions seem far more about competing ideologies than pragmatic politics. I often wonder whether we properly represent voters’ needs. They pay the price, literally and figuratively, of our leaders’ decisions. We all attach ourselves to some sort of constituency. This match is never perfect. After all, I’m sure you’ve never met a person with whom you agree on every issue. It’s even less likely you’d agree with all positions and approaches of an entire group. It’s often a matter of degree. We ultimately accept “the package” and tolerate minor differences, based on what is most important to us. For instance, I trust decisions of individuals in those areas of their lives in which they don’t affect others. Matters that concern me most regard decisions today that impose an unfair burden on citizens today and especially the citizens we hope will live here tomorrow. In that respect, I worry most about spending the hard-earned income of those who struggle to survive, or those who will someday make decisions whether to come here in comparison to the cost of living elsewhere. Nor is it an issue of value. Some claim taxpayers would pay more taxes if they feel they’ll get more value. But, nobody will pay more for the same level of services. And nor will they come if value is better elsewhere. That’s the value I wish to protect. Some complicate the issue and forgot who elected us. I won’t, and I don’t kick the can down the road.

ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER TIME

July 7, 2017 — Near the Garrison Restaurant in Lake George, public works crews located and repaired a broken sewer line that was thought to be the cause, for the past two years, of contamination at the Million Dollar Beach. July 11, 1896 — During this week, Thomas Alva Edison, Mrs. Edison and Miss Grace Millet of Orange, New Jersey were staying at the Sagamore Hotel in Lake George. (Update: Despite only three months of formal schooling and increasing deafness throughout his life, this man was a pioneer in the field of electricity and his incredible inventions were numerous.) July 13, 1946 — Alfred Stieglitz, 82, died in New York City. (Update: Stieglitz was one of the greatest photographers of all time but he was mightily overshadowed by his wife, painter Georgia O’Keeffe. She first came to the Lake George area in 1908 and the couple later met in 1915. In 1918 he brought her to his family’s large summer cottage, “Oaklawn,” near Lake George Village. They were married in 1924 and in summer they lived for a time in the modest former Trask cottage across the road from his parent’s property. Georgia died in 1986 in New Mexico, outliving her husband by forty years. Stieglitz is rumored to be buried in an unmarked grave on the shore of Lake George in a motel parking lot near his parent’s former property. This is an unconfirmed but well known story. One of his photographs has always stuck in my mind. It was of a nervous carriage horse in New York City’s Central Park, obviously very early in the morning, with vapor coming out of the animal’s nostrils in the cold morning air. It was a story well told where no words were needed.) July 17, 1953 — A light two-seat Aeronca seaplane failed to clear a 2,000 foot peak near Deer Leap, several miles north of Bolton Landing shortly after take off and crashed 500 feet from the mountain top. Two burned bodies, that of David L. Serge and Charles J. Romano, were recovered from the wreckage.)

July 20, 1944 — “Operation Valkyrie” failed when German Col. Claus von Stauffenberg and others placed a suitcase bomb under a heavy oak table in a plot to kill Adolf Hitler in his bunker. Hero von Stauffenberg was executed for his “crime.” July 20, 1969 — The first manned moon landing was accomplished. July 21, 1783 — George Washington visited Crown Point, New York. July 21, 1979 — A day that will live long in Warrensburg history occurred when the Merrill-Magee auction was held at what is now the beautiful new Merrill-Magee Inn and Restaurant at 3 Hudson Street. The family of Grace Merrill Lown Magee, who died in 1979 and was the last member of the famous family that had lived there since 1833. All the treasures of this great house were auctioned off. Included was Grace’s 1934 Packard seven-passenger touring car, which was always driven by a chauffeur. It was sold for $75,000 at the auction. The house itself was bought by Ken and Florence Carrington, who always made townspeople welcome to come and enjoy their historic treasure and enjoy their apple tree wood burning fire place. July 21, 1979 — I was at the Merrill-Magee auction that fateful day and was sitting in the audience on the side lawn during the auctioneering. I casually noticed my friend, Police Deputy Robert Pendus, leaning up against a pillar watching the proceedings and thought little of it when he wandered off when he received a call. In Marion Park he was shot by a blast from a .65-caliber rifle in the abdomen. He survived but the shooter committed suicide. July 23, 1885 — Ulysses Simpson Grant, commander in chief of the Union Army in the American Civil War and 18th president of the United States, died at age 63 at Mount McGregor, New York. In the months he slowly lay dying, he wrote a two-volume history of his personal memoirs of the great war between the states. (Update: Many years ago when I attended a tour of “Grant’s Cottage,” with former Warrensburg Town Historian Mabel Tucker, a pleasant male tour guide allowed me to gently sit on the bed where Grant breathed his last breath. It was like reaching out and touching history and I considered it to be a great honor. On July 26, 2014, Grant’s cottage finally closed for good to the public. July 23, 1906 — Corinne and Sophia Piddian, of

Brooklyn, New York, drowned near Hulett’s Landing, Lake George. Their bodies were recovered seven days later. July 25, 1902 — Jim Jeffries knocked out Bob Fitzsimmons in the eighth round to retain the world’s heavy weight title. July 25, 1909 — Louis Bleriot, 35, built a 25-horsepower airplane and successfully flew over the sea from Calais, France to Dover, England, a trip of 24 miles. He won a one-thousand dollar prize being the first aviator to make the trip. July 27, 1777 — Indians murdered and scalped Jane McCrea in Fort Edward. Sarah McNeil, who was kidnapped at the same time, survived and died years later at the age of 77 years. McCrea’s body was moved three times and dug up four times since her death. The last time was in 2003. July 28, year unknown — In the Garfield (the cat) cartoon, this is Garfield’s owner Jon’s birthday. (You may say you read it here!) July 29, 1906 — William Annes Ley Hoyt, 6, drowned in Lake George. July 30, 1945 — On the way to the Philippines, with 1,196 men on board, the USS Indianapolis was attacked by a Japanese submarine and sunk in 12 minutes. Three hundred and sixteen men survived. July 30, 1975 — Teamster Jimmy Hoffa was last seen at the Machus Red Fox Restaurant at Milford Township, Michigan. August 1, 2006 — It was 100 degrees in Glens Falls. (Update: I think no one had ever heard of “global warming” back in those days. Readers are welcome to contact Adirondack Journal/Sun correspondent Jean Hadden at jhadden1@ nycap.rr.com or 623-2210.

Conference, event facilities at L.G. Marriott Courtyard christened By Thom Randall

LAKE GEORGE — Expectations that the Lake George Marriott Courtyard hotel will help boost the village’s off-season business were heightened when the hotel’s owners announced that their banquets and conferences will be catered and managed jointly with Mazzone Hospitality — renowned in the Capital Region and beyond for their upscale food service. Local officials joined executives of the two enterprises for a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the hotel on July 20. As many as 100 people celebrated the new alliance at a reception held in one of the new ballrooms. Mazzone Hospitality will be booking, managing and catering weddings and events in the hotel’s banquet spaces as well as collaborating with the hotel to book conventions and conferences. Renowned in upstate New York, Mazzone Hospitality owns and operates finedining restaurants throughout the Capital Region and conducts food service operations at leading area corporate headquarters. Lake George Mayor Robert Blais hailed the new partnership, predicting it will bring many more conferences, corporate meetings, wedding receptions and other

events to the village. “The combination of the Marriott and Mazzone Catering is a tremendous addition to Lake George — this is going to be a great partnership,” he said. Marriott Courtyard co-developer Frank Dittrich said that the hotel has already proven it will be boosting year-round economic activity in the years to come. “Our goal is to bring more people into Lake George and experience what we have here year-round,” he said. Mazzone Hospitality Chief Operating Officer Sean Willcoxon said the Marriott Courtyard provides another prime venue for his firm’s services. “We’ve been wanting for some time to get established north of Saratoga, so we’re now really excited to be in Lake George Village on the main strip, with the view of the lake,” Willcoxon said. “We couldn’t ask for more.” Three event spaces, totaling about 10,000 square feet, are located in the southern side of the Courtyard hotel: the Lakeshore Conference Center on the first floor, which can be subdivided into breakout rooms as needed; the Paradise Bay Ballroom directly above; and the Silver Bay Ballroom, almost identical, one floor higher. The companion ballrooms allow for a

cocktail reception to be held in one venue, and a formal dinner to be held directly afterwards nearby in the other ballroom. A wedding suite adjacent to the Silver Bay Ballroom provides a place for the bride and groom and their attendants to prepare for a grand entrance down a staircase into the ballroom. Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson praised the facilities’ versatility. “It’s a great venue, to have everything in one place — this will have a definite impact on our area’s economy,” he said, noting that the Marriott is a welcome addition to the other leading local banquet venues: Fort William Henry hotel, The Inn at Erlowest and The Sagamore. “All business is good business,” Dickinson added. Willcoxon predicted that Mazzone’s partnership with the Marriott Courtyard will provide new jobs for Warren County residents — five to seven full-time, yearround jobs locally and 15-20 part-time jobs. He said the latter would be full-time positions if employees were able to work at the other Mazzone venues. Several years ago, the gross annual revenue of the Mazzone enterprises was estimated at $38 million. “We’re now able to tap into a lot of skilled workers in the Lake George area — and

we’ll be doing our best attempting to keep them working year-round,” Willcoxon said, noting that Mazzone Hospitality’s new presence in Lake George would allow them to expand their catering business into the Adirondacks. Amanda Metzger, of the Lake George Chamber of Commerce, said The Courtyard’s ballrooms, balconies and rooftop terrace with a view of the lake enhanced what the village can provide for conferences and events. “Considering their phenomenal food and service, we’re really happy that Mazzone Catering connected with the Marriott Courtyard,” she said. Mazzone Hospitality founder Angelo Mazzone mentioned how Marriott Courtyard co-owner Dave Kenny had urged him to expand northward. “Thanks to Dave for prodding me for a long time to come to Lake George,” Angelo Mazzone said. “I’m glad were finally here, and we’re going to do great things.” Kenny credited the mayor and village officials for their support over the past several years which culminated in the six-story, $26 million hotel being built in the village. “Mayor Blais had the vision of making the village a year-round resort, and we’re going to prove it can work,” Kenny said.

Town of Lake George votes to buy property for shared garage Board to bond $180,000 By Thom Randall

thom@suncommunitynews.com

LAKE GEORGE — An initiative to establish a centralized vehicle repair garage for the school district, town and village government took a major step forward on July 31. The Lake George Town Board voted unanimously to issue up to $180,000 worth of bonds to purchase property next to its existing highway garage on Gage Road. The three-acre plot belonged to the family of the late James Corkland, who served as town justice for many years. The town has recently reached an agreement with the Corkland family to buy the land for $175,000 — nearly $20,000 less than its assessed value. The remaining $5,000 of the borrowed money would be used for closing costs. Last month, the town board approved a memorandum of understanding with the Lake George School District to pursue a joint “motor pool” where vehicles belonging to the town, the school district and Lake George Village would all be repaired and maintained in a single facil-

ity. Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said July 31 that the centralized garage would be advantageous for all three entities. “This initiative should boost efficiency and provide worthwhile savings for the town, the village and the school district — as well as our emergency squad,” he said. Dickinson added that the single garage would allow sharing of equipment and personnel expertise. Also, the Lake George Emergency Squad — which is supported primarily by the town’s taxpayers — has its headquarters situated on the property that hosts the town’s existing highway garage. The inter-municipal agreement, approved July 11, specifies that the town, village and school district share the cost of an engineering study to determine the feasibility of the initiative. The town and village are each to spend $10,000 towards the study, and the school district’s portion is $5,000. The agreement and the land purchase would boost prospects of obtaining state grants to both study the feasibility of the shared garage and construct the facility, he said, as the state government has been rewarding municipalities that consolidate operations.

According to Dickinson, the town’s existing highway department buildings are deteriorating, and should be replaced, or at least upgraded. He predicted that establishing a centralized repair facility would not prompt any personnel layoffs. The vote to borrow money to purchase the property is subject to a permissive referendum, which provides 30 days for residents to submit petitions to bring the issue to a public vote. If petitions aren’t filed in that time span, the board’s decision stands and the property sale could close about 20 days afterwards, Dickinson said. In other business conducted at the July 31 meeting, the town board voted to bid up to $6,000 on a 2010 Dodge Caravan that is being auctioned off by the Lake George Central School District. The minivan, listed in “fair” condition, has been driven 120,792 miles. Dickinson said the minivan would be used to supplement the existing town Senior Bus for transporting local senior citizens on various excursions, whether it’s trips to the Racino or the racetrack in Saratoga Springs, to the casino in Schenectady or to go shopping in Queensbury. Dickinson said that with a capacity

of seven passengers, the 2010 Caravan could save taxpayers in transportation costs when only seven people or fewer sign up for the such trips. The senior bus, designed to transport far more passengers, is far more costly to operate, Dickinson said. He noted that the bus, a 1988 model, is now undergoing repairs to its heating and air conditioning systems, which are estimated to cost about $1,700.

appeared to support that assessment, but members of the Board of Fire Commissioners dismissed it as conjecture. The ILVFD in December accepted the donation of the building from a private owner. The structure has been appraised at $550,000. Indian Lake Supervisor Brian Wells suggested a second referendum be held, this time dealing only with the proposed location. But commissioners nixed the idea. “This whole situation has put this board at odds,” said Wells, who said the situation could have been avoided with better communication between the parties. Wells noted the vote wasn’t necessary one of support for the project, but rather the right for ILVFD to apply for the grant. Councilmen Richard Clawson and John Rathbun voted in support; Sally Stanton and Kelli Mitchell voted against. Wells broke the tie, citing his past membership in the department. However, he noted he was unhappy commissioners placed him in such a difficult position during an election year.

“With small infestations, we have the capacity to use systemic insecticides to treat that small spot and take the population down so it’s not spreading,” Whitmore told the Sun. Insecticides, typically applied near the base of the tree, will buy time to implement longterm bio controls, he said — including deploying other insects to eat them. Within the past three years, DEC has treated infested hemlock trees with insecticides at a few select locations “where the control is likely to slow the spread of HWA, or where the hemlocks provide a significant public value,” said the agency in a statement. The critter has previously been detected in 29 other counties in New York, primarily in the lower Hudson Valley, and of-

ficials have long fretted over its slow march northward. “I’ve been alarmed for a long time,” Whitmore said. The crews spent 72 hours surveying 250 acres of forest and found only one other tree, a small Eastern hemlock near the original infested tree, that contained one branch with a small cluster of early stage HWA. The hemlock woolly adelgid is often transported on nursery stock, Whitmore said. It’s critical for homeowners to examine their trees for little white fuzzy dots on the twigs and call the DEC if they suspect an infestation. While it will take a long time to develop here in the Adirondacks, the pest has already waged “death and destruction” in the Catskills, Whitmore said. “I’m not happy to see it in the Adirondacks.” The closest known infestation of HWA is 40 miles away in

Rate hikes << Continued from | p. 1

“We think it’s a responsible rate increase,” said Ray Agnew, Paul Smith’s Vice President for College Advancement. Clarkson President Tony Collins cited similar projects at their campus in St. Lawrence County, and stressed the need for ongoing improvements to the electricity grid. The increases would generate an additional $331 million for the provider, creating a revenue stream to fund much-needed research into renewables, Collins said. The proposed rate increase will allow National Grid to modernize their electricity and

Schenectady County. The DEC is asking hikers, campers, boaters, sportsmen, and others recreating on or along forestlands in northern Schenectady, Saratoga and southern Warren counties to check Eastern Hemlock trees and report any potential infestations. The Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program is also engaged in the response to the infestation. Eastern hemlock trees comprise approximately 10 percent of the Adirondack forest, and are among the oldest trees in New York with some reaching ages of more than 700 years, according to the DEC. The trees help maintain erosion control and water quality, and the hemlock’s shade cool waters providing critical habitat for many of New York’s freshwater fish, including native brook trout. DEC monitors the distribu-

gas networks to “further enhance reliability and resiliency,” improve customer service — including programs to aid vulnerable customers — promote economic growth, and “integrate new technologies that support the demands of a modern energy system.” ‘EXCESSIVE’ The American Association of Retired Persons is calling the proposed hikes “excessive” and containing questionable benefits for customers. “National Grid’s proposal would result in the average customer’s electric and gas bills each increasing by over $100 each a year,” wrote David McNally, director of government

tion and spread of HWA by annual aerial and ground surveys, as well as reports from partners and the general public. The state agency has also provided funding for the development and operation of a biological control laboratory at Cornell University associated with the New York State Hemlock Initiative in order to enhance the production and release of these biological controls. For more information, visit blogs.cornell.edu/foresthealth/ nys-hemlock-initiative or dec. ny.gov/animals/82617.html. Readers are also encouraged to call DEC’s toll-free Forest Pest Information Line at 1-866640-0652 to ask questions and report possible infestations. affairs and advocacy for AARP New York, in a statement. “That’s over $200 more each year. Consumers need a break, not another increase to their utility bill.” Seniors and those on a fixed income are already grappling with rising prescription drug costs and health insurance premiums, he said. McNally, of Olmstedville, also questioned the investments in smart meters. “While smart meters provide customers with data, they will likely do little to impact usage and will simply lead to higher bills,” he said. — See more at suncommunitynews.com
