Questions remain as manhunt continues

DANNEMORA — The community remained tense and under tight guard on Tuesday as the search for the pair of escaped murderers entered its fourth day.

While officials said the convicts who escaped the Clinton Correctional Facility, Richard Matt and David Sweat, may have already fled the country, roads surrounding the village, which is about 25 miles from the Canadian border, remained under guard, with police presence bumped up since the inmates were reported missing from their cells during a head count early Saturday.

Saranac and Beekmantown Central were under tight security and residents appeared to be rattled.

Christopher Rasco lives on Bouck Street, just a click away from the manhole from which the killers emerged following their escape.

Racso thinks the men remain close. Ò I donÕ t believe they have gone far,Ó he said.

Racso says he feels violated by the sustained police presence and the continued lockdown on the street. Ò ItÕ s an emotional intrusion on my family because they are scared and nervous,Ó he said.

Nothern Points Cluster celebrates 20 years

ryan@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ The Northern Points Cluster of Churches is preparing to celebrate its 20-year anniversary beginning on Wednesday, June 17.

In 1995, Saint John the Baptist Church in Chestertown, Blessed Sacrament Church in Hague, and Saint James Church in North Creek were asked by the Diocese of Albany to become a Ò Cluster,Ó presided over by a single Priest.

In recent years, the Catholic Church has seen a decrease of Priests. By 2020, the projected number of Priests in the 14-county Diocese of Albany is only 57. To combat this issue, the Diocese has begun merging churches to form Clusters in an attempt to share resources and strategize together to keep their parishes afloat.

At the time, the transition was overseen by Rev. George Fleming and Parish Life Director Francesca Husselbeck, but since the summer of 2007, Rev. John OÕ Kane has led the Cluster. Ò We knew that in 20 years we wouldnÕ t have enough priests,Ó Rev. OÕ Kane said. Ò This is something that we all have to deal with.Ó In this consolidation, St. John the Baptist and Blessed SacramentÑ now a seasonal churchÑ became a single parish. After a public vote, three names for the new parish were chosen and sent to the Bishop in Albany, who decided on St. Isaac Jogues as the new name — a fitting namesake for a North Country Church.

Martyred in 1646, St. Isaac Jogues was a Jesuit priest and missionary who traveled and worked among the native populations in seventeenth century North America. He is credited with having given Lake George its original European nameÑ Lac du Saint Sacrement, which translates to Lake of the Blessed Sacrament.

One of the vessels owned by the Lake George Steamboat Company still bears this name.

Both Rev. OÕ Kane and Pastoral Associate of Parish Life Barbara Carlozzi said that, although rocky at first, the 1995 transition has turned out to be a positive one for their parishioners, particularly among the Youth Ministry.

Carlozzi said the kids in the unified parish have had an

easier time working together than some of the adults, among whom Ò there was a lot of hurt feelings at first.” Ò Johnsburg kids go to games in North Warren, and vice versa; the younger kids are riding the backs of the older kids from other churches,Ó she said. Ò They teach us what Cluster is all about.Ó In the spirit of togetherness, one way the cluster has worked to integrate all three churches is their yearly observation of Holy Week.

Every year during Holy Week, Holy Thursday is observed in Hague, Good Friday is observed in North Creek and Easter Sunday is observed in Chestertown, as St. John the Baptist is the largest of the three and centrally located. Ò They still have their own Masses, but for Holy Week, itÕ s the Cluster experience,Ó Carlozzi said.

In order to commemorate 20 years of togetherness, the Northern Points Cluster will follow this same model with three celebratory events to be held between June and September.

On Wednesday, June 17, a 6 p.m. Healing and Reconciliation Mass will be held at St. Isaac Jogues in Hague, similar to the one held to begin the Cluster in 1995. The Mass will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.

At noon on Sunday, August 23, at St. James Church in North Creek, the Stations of the Cross will be performed by the ClusterÕ s Youth Ministry. This is a unique performance at which members of the Youth Ministry present the Stations of the Cross using vignettes from their personal lives to depict the day of Jesus’ crucifixion. Following the ceremony, a 1 p.m. anniversary picnic will be held at Ski Bowl Park in North Creek.

On Sunday, August 30, at 3 p.m. an anniversary Mass will be held at St. Isaac Jogues in Chestertown, followed by a reception in the Parish Center.

Invitations have been sent to the clergy who assisted in the original union, as well as former parishioners and other friends of the Cluster. A memorial donation basket will be available at all three functions for anyone who cannot attend, or who wishes to donate on behalf of a loved one.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the celebration. Water St. will be closed to traffic during the event to enable wagon and pony rides down the roadway.

The event also features a bounce house, displays by local organizations and businesses, complimentary refreshments, health screenings, face painting, and tours of the new health center’s state-of-the-art facilities. Also, the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Co. members are to be present with their new fire truck, allowing children to get behind the wheel of the apparatus.

Most of the activities are to be held on the newly paved parking lot behind the health center, where the older edition stood for about 40 years.

The health center was funded primarily by a federal grant with some assistance by New York State, but vital funds were provided by local donors pitched in to make it a reality, including the Charles R. Wood Foundation, Price Chopper Supermarkets, Glens Falls National Bank, Stewarts Shops, the Michael Schultz family, the Himoff family and the Wolgin family.

To commemorate the centerÕ s opening, the town of Warrensburg issued a resolution declaring Saturday June 13 as Hudson Headwaters Health Network Day. The declaration cites that the organization has been committed to excellence of care for all area residents and visitors, regardless of their financial status, and has been devoted to boosting community health, while providing valuable jobs and stimulating the regionÕ s economy.

Tuesday, Warrensburg Town Supervisor Kevin Geraghty echoed these themes. Ò WeÕ re really pleased that Hudson Headwaters built this new health center, which is a real boost to local businesses and the area economy, as it provides good-paying jobs and draws so many people into town,Ó Geraghty said. Chief Killon is one of those folks who gives but doesnÕ t ask for much in return, and this is reflected in his career of selfless volunteering. Asked what he thought about the event on May 30, Kerry said Ò ItÕ s a good thing Ð the food is great!Ó The event was all about him, but he was very modest about it – it really was more about having friends and well-wishers get together for a pot-luck.

Burgers, hot dogs, and beverages were provided by the MVFDRS, with delicious pot luck dinners and deserts provided by all the folks who came to celebrate Kerry. It was a great event for a great man Ð thanks, Kerry Killon.

North Creek Mosaic Project continues to ‘make waves’

Within the larger story of the mural, volunteers have worked images into the North Creek Mosaic that represent fond memories and anecdotes to be immortalized in stone.

One such story was added by Sullivan himself; having grown up in the area, Sullivan commemorated a story in the mural told to him by his father, in which the latter spotted mountain lion roaming the banks of the opposite side of the Hudson in North River. Ò For years he maintained it, and everyone told him he was crazy,Ó Sullivan recalled.

Now, although an inanimate recreation on a cement wall, thanks to Sullivan a cougar forever prowls the opposite side of the Hudson, silently stalking its prey.

Another way volunteers have worked to personalize this communal work is to contribute materials brought back to North Creek from various locations around the worldÑ including stones from Colorado and Thailand, as well as sea shells from Hawaii.

Among the many donors to the project over the years are such businesses and organizations as the Johnburg Bed Tax Commission, North East Underlayments, In Style Flooring, Frontier, Rivendell Found, Bar Vino, Whitewater Challengers, Adirondack Arts in Education, New York State Council on the Arts, Johnsburg Central School, Barton Mines, United Distributor Tile, CafŽ Sarah, the North Creek Rotary, Schluter Systems, T.C. Murphy, Braley and Noxon, Alpine Lodge, Tannery Pond Community Center and Pearsall Adirondack Foundation.

Hartley said she intends to see the project through to its completion, no matter how long it takes. Ò If itÕ s a nice day in the afternoon, IÕ m usually hereÑ spring and fall.Ó

ryan@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK Ñ The bustling Johnsburg community is stirring to life after a long, dark winter, and these sunny days conjure a familiar image in the minds of North Country residentsÑ a landscape speckled with hikers, fishermen, campers, explorers and paddlers of all kinds.

Over the past four years, a new image has been added to the list, encapsulating all the others: a Main Street sidewalk teeming with community volunteers adding original artwork to the North Creel Mosaic Project.

Spearheaded by local artist and teacher Kate Hartley, the mosaic combines colored tile, glass, stones and even the occasional seashellÑ the majority of which were donated to the causeÑ to render a 180 foot mural comprised of familiar Adirondack scenes.

HartleyÕ s vision is to transform the Ò big, long, ugly wallÓ into a communal work of art that will endure for yearsÑ a project funded primarily through two state grants written by Hartley herself.

According to Hartley, the mosaic is meant to depict a Ò snap shot of the ideal spring day.Ó It features such images as a group of whitewater rafters and fly fishermen braving the rushing rapids of the Hudson River, skiers and snowboarders navigating the slopes of Gore Mountain, and a menagerie of critters frolicking through the Adirondack forests.

Amassing over 800 volunteers to date, two panels of the four that make up HartleyÕ s canvas have been completed, and last month work began on the third with Johnsburg CentralÕ s entire seventh grade class adding the panel’s first trees.

Each of the students sketched his or her own tree, which they formed from bits of broken wine bottles which were heated in a kiln through a process called Ò slumping.Ó On Thursday, June 4, Johnsburg native and Warrensburg art teacher Patrick Sullivan and his commercial art class returned to the site of

the mural for SullivanÕ s second year to add a number of pre-“slumped” glass pieces they’d been working on all month.

Sullivan praised the sheer scope of the proj-

ect, as well as the resilient nature of the medium. He quipped of his students, Ò TheyÕ re doing stuff that will puzzle archeologists ten thousand years from now.Ó

Who’s been in Dannemora DANNEMORA Ñ While Richard Matt and David Sweatt may now be the most infamous prisoners (formerly) of the Clinton Correctional Facility, the list of “guests” here reads like a who’swho of violent criminals, along with several famous inmates who have spent time in Ò New York Siberia.Ó

Perhaps the biggest manhunt prior to the search for Matt and Sweatt was focused on the capture of prison escapee Robert Garrow, who had a pair of stays in the facility. The first, from 1961 until 1963 for rape before being transferred to Auburn. After murdering four people in July 1973 and sparking the largest manhunt in state history at the time, Garrow was sent back to Clinton from 1974 until 1977, when he was sent back to Auburn before going to the Fishkill Correctional Facility, which he escaped from in 1978. After another manhunt and capture, Garrow was killed in another escape attempt Sept. 11, 1978.

Charles “Lucky” Luciano

Perhaps the second most infamous mobster of the Ò golden ageÓ of organized crime behind Al Capone, Luciano was an inmate who served 10 years for running a prostitution ring before being deported to Italy after World War II.

Ò I think they had enough time to get away to escape to somewhere different,Ó said Parker. Ò I donÕ t think that they would be hiding out here.Ó Parker said she and her family felt safe. Ò We actually have police vans and cars that have been by our home,Ó she said.

I believe theyÕ re doing a great job.Ó Authorities are continuing to investigate some 300 leads, state police said on Monday.

It remains an open question of how the inmates obtained the tools; if they had help and when, in fact, they performed the sophisticated work.

Hundreds of corrections and law enforcement officers continue to comb through the region, conducting grid searches in the heavily wooded area, and additional investigative services are being applied statewide and nationally.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said that the inmates could now be anywhere.

It’s also looking increasingly likely that it could be an inside job, said the governor. Ò I think they had help,Ó said Cuomo in an appearance on the Today Show. Ò I donÕ t believe they could have acquired the equipment that they needed to do this without help.Ó Cuomo said the investigators have divided the prison employees into three groups: guards, civilian employees and private contractors. Ò IÕ d be shocked if a correction guard was involved in this,Ó said Cuomo. Ò But they definitely had help, otherwise they couldnÕ t have done this on their own.Ó Cuomo said the complex operation, which has drawn comparisons to the Shawshank Redemption, must have taken days.

After constructing makeshift dummies, the pair cut through the steel wall at the back of their cells, scaled a catwalk, broke through a brick wall and into a steam pipe, where they snaked their way to freedom, exiting through a manhole cover. Ò It really could have been a movie script, and if you saw it as a movie script, it would have been unbelievable, frankly, what they accomplished,Ó said Cuomo.

ItÕ s been revealed that the two men, both of whom have long track records of violent behavior, Acting Corrections Commissioner Anthony Annucci has said that all internal tools have been accounted for.

Citing a high-level source, the New York Post reported on Monday that a female prison worker was being interrogated as a possible accomplice.

Authorites confirmed on Tuesday that a woman who worked in the prisonÕ s tailor shop was being interviewed by authorities.

Cuomo said the top priority remains capturing the convicted killers. The state has offered a $100,000 reward for their capture.

Remember the rules of the road

Y

our job is not to be polite, your job is to be predictable.

This could refer to many things, but for this week, we are focusing that quote to the Òj obÓ o f driving.

Yes, driving is a job. You are responsible for others when you are on the road, and they, in turn, are responsible for you. The payment from this job comes in a very simple form, that you, your car or anyone else sharing the road does not get hurt.

With any job, there are a list of rules and guidelines you have to adhere to. In driving, there are rules and guidelines very familiar to the anxious, acne-dotted face of a teenager preparing for first the written then driver’s test needed to receive the freedom and excitement which comes with a driverÕ s license.

However, at the moment that business-card sized piece of plastic with a driver’s name and picture exchanges hands, it seems this knowledge flies out the window faster than a cigarette butt from the vehicle in front of you.

As our staff covers the events and news of this area, they are on the road a lot and see examples of both good and bad driving. Here are some common occurrences they have seen which are in need of correction.

Perhaps the biggest problem facing drivers today is distracted driving. Your job on the road is to focus on the road, not on your text messages, Instagram selfies or dinner plans over the phone. That can all be taken care of before or after you get into your vehicle.

Studies have shown the average time to look at a text, email or phone pad is five seconds. That can be a lot of distance based on how fast you are going. Even if there are no cars around you to worry about, there may be hidden driveways or pedestrians in blind spots, and, here in the Adirondacks, there is a good chance some kind of four-legged creature is going to literally cross your path without regard for your right-of-way. While driving, a mobile phone cannot: rest on the driverÕ s leg, between the shoulder and ear, or on any other part of the driverÕ s body; be used for text messaging, video messaging, emailing or similar, or; be held in the driverÕ s hand other than to pass it to a passenger.

Drivers can only use a hand-held mobile phone if their vehicle is parked in an authorised parking spot. They cannot use a hand-held mobile phone while stopped at traffic lights.

Put the phones away, it can wait.

Another common issue we see on the roads are those who either fail to signal or do not realize their signal has remained on after making a turn. Signaling your intentions is a huge responsibility of the job for anyone who drives a vehicle, yet many times people will break suddenly, leaving the drivers both in front and behind to wonder what your intentions are. A wrong guess can lead to a serious accident, especially on rural roads where speeds are higher than in urban areas.

In New York State, the law requires you to signal a turn or lane change with your turn lights or hand signals at least 100 feet (30 meters) ahead. A good safety tip is, when possible, signal your intention to turn before you begin to brake to make the turn.

Even if you know exactly where you are going, itÕ s a good assumption no one else on the road does, so make sure you signal your intentions. It’s just the flick of a wrist.

This can have similar consequences, as drivers will have to slow down or change course in anticipation of a turn that is never coming.

When it comes to right-of-way, too often we see drivers who, while their intentions are somewhat noble, sacrifice the rules of the road for courtesy. An example of this would be having a vehicle stopped at a stop sign, while the approaching vehicle with the right-ofway stops short and offers to let the stopped driver into the flow of traffic.

Courteous, yes. But definitely dangerous for all other drivers on the road.

This is a very dangerous move, as drivers from all sides are not prepared for someone who is going to stop when there is no stop required. They are also not going to yield the right-of-way for the car which now thinks it can merge without consequence.

So, please, help everyone stay safe on the road by doing your job this summer. Ñ

Tying your shoe laces

I think itÕ s worth a try, anyway.

To the Editor: Reader John Sharkey recently took exception to a letter to the editor I previously wrote criticizing publisher Dan Alexander for misstating historical facts by asserting that the founding fathersÕ vision for our country stressed the importance of it being a “nation under God.” I won’t indulge Mr. Sharkey in meaningless back-and-forth argument over the issue, but will simply point out that fortunately he is no more entitled to come up with his own facts (let alone to rewrite our Constitution) than is Mr. Alexander. Interested readers should look at the source material for themselves and see just who is bungling what here.

Because Ò whatÕ s wrong with America todayÓ is a common theme of Mr. AlexanderÕ s and a common interest of my own, though, I would like to take just a moment to address a couple of other things Mr. Sharkey said as I believe they exemplify a major problem currently entrenched in our society. IÕ m talking about the mindset so common among people today that Ò if youÕ re not with us, youÕ re against us!Ó Redefining America as a Christian nation is a cause du jour among many on the far right of the political spectrum, so per the aforementioned mindset, anyone who speaks out against this cause must of course be a politically polar opposite. Hence in Mr. SharkeyÕ s view I wasnÕ t simply correcting the facts, but was instead Ò espous[ing]Ó a Ò liberal ideology.Ó And just to drive home how terrible being a dreaded liberal would make me, for good measure he closed his letter with a sidelong swipe at my patriotism.

In truth, if holding to historical/legal fact and the secular governance protected thereby amounts to any kind of ideology it would be that of constitutionalism, not liberalism. But in truth, too, any person of reasonable intellect and good intention is likely to have a mix of beliefs, some progressive, some conservative, some libertarian, some environmental, etc. Many beliefs could also be attributed to more than one ideology.

For the record, I strive to be one such person and accordingly prefer to remain free of any pure ideology and independent of any political party (not to mention any partyÕ s extreme factions) Ð not that I think those who align themselves with one or another of these deserve demonization for doing so (perhaps excepting those extreme factions). I realize this simple fact wonÕ t stop Mr. Sharkey or anyone else who is committed to the Ò us versus themÓ mentality from assigning me to some foolish enemy camp and trying to do battle with me for saying something thatÕ s contrary to their beliefs, but maybe theyÕ ll ultimately gain a better understanding of the reality of life if more of us stand up and say Ò IÕ m neither for nor against you, IÕ m for all of us, in my own way!Ó

ard to believe we are already into June. Once we arrive at “Summer” time really will fly even faster. There is always so much going on to make up for not doing the extraÕ s during the winter

I took Keisha Sprague to the Glens Falls Hospital Monday, June 1 to have the new type of tube put in her ear. Hopefully it will last longer to help with her hearing.

Matt Perkins was headed to work with the company truck one day last week when he hit a deer. Glad he was not hurt but some damage to the truck. The deer always seem to be a dread to those traveling.

The Baccalaureate Service for the Seniors will be held Thursday, June 18, at the St. James Church in North Creek, at 7 p.m.

Saturday, June 6, Ava Conlon along with so many others giving their Recitals, that have been attending Ò The Dance ExperienceÓ . They Presented “Seasons” at THE EGG in Albany. It was the 19th annual End of Year Performance. It was a great thing to watch. They all worked so extremely hard.

E-cigs are a threat To the Editor: “Are e-cigarettes safe?” While the answer to that question remains unclear, one thing is certain. E-cigarettes pose a serious threat to our children.

Findings from the CDC’s 2014 National Youth Tobacco Survey revealed that use of e-cigarettes (vaping) is becoming increasingly popular among youth. As a matter of fact, students are vaping more often than smoking cigarettes these days. Almost four percent of middle school students and 13.4 percent of high school students reported vaping in the 2014 survey. That is compared to 2.5 percent of middle school and 9.2 percent of high school students who reported smoking cigarettes.

Why is this problematic? To name a few reasons, e-cigarettes are not regulated by the FDA, nor have they been fully studied, so vapers don’t know how much nicotine or what other chemicals they are inhaling. Second, e-liquid contains liquid nicotine which is at least as addictive and harmful to adolescent brain development as the nicotine smoked in a cigarette. Finally, liquid nicotine is extremely toxic if swallowed or absorbed by skin. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, just a teaspoon liquid nicotine can kill a small child, and it has.

New York State has already taken steps to protect our youth from ecigarettes and liquid nicotine by making it illegal to sell these products to persons under 18. It also requires liquid nicotine containers to have childproof lids. As a community, though, we need to do more. We need to engage our youth to help them understand how e-cigarettes are just a continuation of tobacco company efforts to hook yet another (their) generation on nicotine. We also need to remain diligent about eliminating youth access and exposure to tobacco products and marketing. Jan Ross was surprised by her 70th birthday party on Sunday at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Fred and Chrissy Keller on Sunday afternoon. She was so surprised that it had her in tears when she arrived to see so many family and friends there, Joan enjoyed visiting with everyone, eating the great food and receiving nice gifts. It was great to see how many there for this special day.

Just a reminder, the Wade Hammond in concert will be Sunday, June 14, at the North River Methodist Church, at 7 p.m. The covered dish supper will start at 5:30 p.m. Let’s fill the church.

The High School Graduation for Johnsburg Central School will be Saturday, June 27, at 2 p.m.

ave you ever heard the phrase, Ò IÕ m all in but my shoe laces?Ó A Malone friend posted comments on a social media site recently. She said they had come home and she was very tired after the trip, thus the shoe laces line. I told her I loved it, but it was unfamiliar to me.

Just when you think you know such things because youÕ ve lived in rural areas for many years, such colorful phrases pop up. I ran into another room and asked Kaye if it was familiar to her.

It was. Ò What would you say

by Gordie Little if you were exhausted like that?” she queried. The first thing that came to mind was, Ò IÕ m too pooped to popÓ or Ò IÕ m just plain dog tired.Ó How do these things get started anyway?

Somebody had to be first. It was either in conversation or in print. Often the origin is lost in the mists of time. Others with much more time and energy have searched such things and have written serious books and articles on the topic.

What I do here each week is mostly just for fun as I try to get conversations started around your kitchen table.

IÕ ve always been interested in studying the English language and the history of words. ThatÕ s the definition of etymology. To learn word roots and how those words have changed throughout the years is a great pastime. I especially like to learn how colloquial words and phrases from this area got their start. I know youÕ ve all said Ò jeezum crowÓ at one time or another and I have a good friend who makes a living by putting those words on his homemade products. WeÕ ve also spent a lot of time trying to find out how our iconic food delight called michigans got started.

Sometimes, itÕ s fairly easy to trace the origin of words and phrases. The Internet and digital age have facilitated that effort tremendously. IÕ ve written often about Ò brass monkeys,Ó Ò breaking the ice,Ó Ò over the top,Ó Ò keeping your eye on the ballÓ and others. Some go all the way to the Holy Bible and many were coined by Shakespeare himself. Others were no doubt borne straight out of small talk by farmers such as Ò making hay while the sun shines.Ó Although not familiar to me, the one about the shoe laces is perfect. When you hear it, you know instantly what it means. Last weekend, Kaye and I drove up to the wonderful, old Petrova School in Saranac Lake. It was charming because Kaye graduated on that stage when it was a high school way back when. Also, because one of our 37 great grandchildren was performing there with other youngsters who charmed their parents and friends.

Little dancer LydiaÕ s big brother Logan walked in and out with us. I noticed that both of his laces were not only untied, but were strung out behind him as he walked. He was oblivious and, amazingly, didnÕ t trip or stumble even once. I had a flashback to age five and heard my motherÕ s voice in my head saying, Ò Tie those laces or you’ll trip and fall.” Later, I saw that LoganÕ s laces were tied securely in beautiful Ô rabbit earÓ loops. I didnÕ t ask who did it. Maybe my motherÕ s voice was loud enough for him to hear it as well.

Do they still teach lace tying in kindergarten?

When our kids were small, they brought home writing assignments challenging them to describe on paper the precise steps for tying their shoe laces. Guess who helped them with that project and made himself crazy in the process?

My mother has long since crossed the river Jordan and is blissfully residing on the other side; but Kaye is my conscience and often reminds me to tie my shoe laces and keep my zipper zipped.

She has saved me from public embarrassment so many times. How I love that woman.

My advice to you: listen to your mother and your wife. Keep your eye on the ball, tie your shoe laces, keep your powder dry and donÕ t shoot till you see the whites of their eyes.

Ausable’s Two Fly Challenge

By Rich Redman were picking it up quick. Learning to tie and use home grown leaders was just part of the informal lesson that evening. Nymph and streamer fishing were covered extensively that evening over cocktails, fish tales and laughter!

Steve and Wally were going to fish the Two Fly Challenge along with my brother Dave and I, and we wanted to be ready.

Fly fishing is not all about catching fish, but hey, ya gotta be ready and try anyway! Spending time with some buds and renewing friendships is important. Stream therapy is always a plus!

Running into friends like Herb and Jodi who come down from Potsdam to fish is always a joy, Herb and Jodi lost their granddaughter in the car crash in Ray Brook last year so they are reevaluating life. Taking time to live is important! They chose to fly fish once again in Wilmington this year.

The 2 Fly Challenge is a 2 day fly fishing for trout event where you are limited to a choice of 2 flies for each day of the event. If you lose the flies, the fish you catch after that, don’t count towards the total. You partner up with a friend, and are on the honor system, where you fish the stretch between the ski jumps in Placid and the dam in Wilmington. Anglers get to fish quiet waters, runs, pools and pockets waters.

Prizes were given for the largest fish, and the total length of an individualÕ s catch.

Hundreds of items were donated by numerous sponsors and tackle companies. Major sponsors include the Ausable River Two Fly Shop, Hardy Company, Douglas Outdoors, Montana Fly, In Search of Fly Waters, WileyÕ s Flies, Ruger Gun Company, etc.

Take a hike, buddy!

I

n the current age, where everyone has instant access to everything in a moment with the simple push of a button; itÕ s nice to know there are still a few places left that require more of an effort.

Among such places, I would rank the Adirondack 46Õ ers, which are the tallest peaks in the park, very high on the list.

IÕ d also have to include the fabled Northville-Placid Trail which bisects the park in a southern to northern pattern.

Not to be forgotten is The Cranberry 50, which is likely the most recent long-trail in the Adirondacks. The route encompasses many miles of forested wilderness surrounding Cranberry Lake, and includes a few highway miles as well.

And I would not overlook the many lesser peaks in the region, which are often more popular than the lofty, Ô high falultingÕ High Peaks. While most local communities have a peak or two in sight of the village that they claim as their own Ô town hillÕ , there are several communities that share mutual mountains.

Mount Marcy for instance, offers an imposing presence when viewed from Lake Placid, Tupper Lake or Newcomb. Although it is a shared view, each community considers the mountain a landmark of their own town.

Elizabethtown can lay claim to a few of the lesser hills such as Cobble Hill, Raven, Discovery and Hurricane, but they share the high peaks of Rocky Peak Ridge and Giant with the neighboring towns of New Russia, Keene and Keene Valley.

Of course, Keene Valley has an exclusive rights to Noonmark Mountain, which dominates the local landscape and provides a timely natural clock when the sun is at high noon.

In recent months, the community of Saranac Lake has taken the lead in marketing the local peaks as part of the popular Saranac Sixers Campaign. Although thereÕ s not a single High Peak in the mix; that appears to add to the charm of the challenge.

While lesser peaks such as Mt. Baker, McKenzie, Scarface, St. Regis, Haystack and Ampersand may not be as difficult compared to the fabled Ô Adk 46ers, that is the real charm. All six peaks are family friendly, and they provide a great way to introduce youngsters to the sport.

It is a hiking club thatÕ s open to all family members, including the elderly and children. The initiative has become a symbol of community pride, and many local youth have bought into the concept. Currently, Saranac 6Õ er patches are more common on backpacks that haul books, rather than climbing gear.

We celebrated with a fine meal at the Wilderness Inn, once again supporting our local economy.

The Two Fly Challenge brings in over 50 fishermen for the weekend, many coming from as far away as Connecticut, New Jersey, and western NY. This event is a great economic boost for our local motels and eateries.

The West Branch of the Ausable is a great river, but Hurricane Irene kicked some stream bank butt, and the damage is sending tons of sand into the river, clogging up gravel spawning areas, widening the river and flattening channels where trout once lived. The lower sections of the river have great holding areas and flush out sediments, but the river road section is in need of some bio-engineering.

I am planning on having a low key, low cost bio-engineering class this fall to work directly with fly fishermen to show them how some simple cuttings and plantings can help stabilize stream banks. As fishermen we do our share of damage when we climb up and down banks and walk along shorelines.

ItÕ s time we pay our dues, set down the rods for a couple of hours and do some stream bank repair work, then we can get back to some fall fly fishing!

There were bucket raffles for fly fishing paraphernalia, along with raffle tickets sold for the chance to win a float tube donated by the Hungry Trout Shop.

The Two Fly Challenge is set in early spring to help support the local economy before the summer season. Recreational communities like Wilmington rely on fly fishermen, hikers, bird watchers, leaf peepers, and skiers. Clean, cold stable rivers, green farm fields, and a variety of forests, with fish and wildlife habitat are all the draws, to create Ò tourist habitatÓ .

We donÕ t have a GM car plant or a US Steel Mill for folks to work in, so we must manage our natural resources with a sound conservation ethic.

Now back to the story! After checking out a few river runs and pools, our group came to a spot where the guys could get some on-stream fly casting experience.

After a few dozen snags, and line tangles along with the line slapping and flopping on the waters, things started to come together. Casting a fly rod is a skill that requires fluid motions, and patience, but once you get it, you got it!

Although the Saranac 6’ers campaign is not yet as recognizable as the townÕ s fabled Winter Carnival, there is now a large, colorful rendition of the Saranac 6Õ ers logo located at the major intersection on Main Street and Broadway, next to the bandstand that holds the SixerÕ s Bell, which is used to announce a climberÕ s final accomplishment.

Adirondack Hiking: By the numbers

Have you ever wondered who uses the Adirondack trails, and where they come from? Are they really all Ô outsidersÕ , who just come north to hike, bike or paddle, and leave very little economic impact in their wake?

I recently discovered some interesting answers to these questions in a research study conducted by Abigail Larkin and Colin Beier at the SUNY/ESF Adirondack Ecological Center in Newcomb.

While the study indicates there are an estimated 2350 miles of DEC trails in the Park, the exact total trail mileage is difficult to determine since many miles of trails are located on private lands recently acquired by the state. The researchers utilized information that was collected from an estimated 300 trail register stations across the region.

Based on user totals of 565,502 person-days, the study revealed that 21 percent of hikers prefer to go it alone, while 66 percent would rather hike in groups of 2-4 and 13 percent tend to travel in groups of 5 or more.

About 88 percent of the recorded outings were for day trips, while about 12 percent of travelers preferred to camp overnight.

The Adirondack Loj /Hart Lake trailhead which provides access to the High Peaks Wilderness Area was the most popular entrance for hikers. It attracts the most visitors with about 54,511 annually It is interesting to note that the shortest marked trail, which leads from the Rondax / Bald Mountain trailhead near Old Forge was the second most p[opular trailhead in the park. It attracted 30,388 hikers for a mile long hike leading to a restored fire tower with great views. I guess a short walk with a big view will always be worth the effort The study concluded the peak of the hiking season occurs during July and August with about 120,000 people taking to the woods each month.

However, itÕ s not just the Ô outsidersÕ who enjoy the regionÕ s many trails. According to study, local Park residents represent a higher proportion of trail users than visitors from any other

area of the state. Although the New York metropolitan region accounted for the greatest overall number of visitors, those travelers actually represent less than 1 percent of their home regionÕ s total population.

Of course, the study did not encompass the relatively new trail system thatÕ s been developed throughout the Champlain Valley in recent years. The Champlain Area Trail System, (CATS) based in Whallonsburgh, encompasses over 30 miles of hiking trails that are located along the west coast of Lake Champlain.

The trails, some new and others restored offer new hiking experiences up Boquet Mountain, around Beaver Flow and in the Splitrock Wild Forest. The routes include several easy-to-moderate hiking trails that are perfect for families with children.

The CATS system also provides a number of unique community links that allow hikers an opportunity to travel from one small town to another in the course of a day, or over a week. The trails are ideally situated to accommodate lodge to lodge hiking and biking adventures throughout the historic Champlain Valley.

Trails Supporter Patch

Several years ago, the NYSDEC developed the Trails Supporter Patch in an effort to provide the non-consumptive community with an opportunity to contribute to the DECÕ s operations.

The patch provides visible evidence that hikers, paddlers, birders and similar nonconsumptive outdoor enthusiasts are willing to pay their fair share. While sportsmen and women have always been able to contribute to the Conservation Fund through the purchase of hunting, trapping or fishing license fees, hikers, paddlers, birdwatchers and other non-consumptive user groups had no such opportunity.

The Trails Supporter Patch has changed the equation. It is available for $5 at all outlets where sporting licenses are sold, online or via telephone at 1-866-933-2257. Proceeds from the sale of the patch are dedicated to help maintain and enhance nonmotorized trails throughout New York State.

New Johnsburg Emergency Squad building taking shape JOHNSBURG — After years of preparation, planning, and saving, the walls are finally rising on the new Johnsburg Emergency Squad Station at 626 Peaceful Valley Road.

Working with a modest plan, the squad was able to secure financing at a very reasonable rate, 2.5 percent, from the New York State Revolving Loan Fund. The squadÕ s goal from the beginning was to keep the work in the community, and the construction manager, Michael Bowers, of North Creek, will be supervising those local contractors who came through with the lowest bids. TC Murphy will be providing most of the materials.

The squad long ago outgrew their current home, an addition to the old Scout Hall that was never designed for the needs of a professional ambulance service. They looked into various options, including expanding into the scout hall, and obtaining the old firehouse in Wevertown, before choosing the current site. The new building was designed by squad members working with an engineer, Bret Winchip, of Chestertown. They hope to be moved in before winter.

The squad would also like to welcome back two paramedics who left last year, Shane Fahey, and Jamie Callard. The experienced medics both cite the new benefit package the squad offers as a primary reason for their return. The two weeks vacation, health stipend, and competitive pay rates were made possible by the ambulance tax district passed last November. The goal was to retain and recruit the best caregivers, and the squad is glad to have these two back.

The list of quality medics continues to get better, but the squad is still in need of good people to drive them. The squad still has too few members doing too much. They ask that anyone interested call the station or stop by and inquire about the new night time rewards program.

Finally, the squad would like to announce the arrival of its new Medical Director, Dr. Albert Jagoda. HeÕ s been an ER physician at Saratoga Hospital for almost thirty years, and a medical director of three squads in Saratoga County. HeÕ s also a longtime ski patroller at Gore Mountain, as well as medical director there, and over the years has developed a close relationship with Johnsburg EMS. HeÕ s a very well regarded physician and director, and under his guidance the squad will continue to provide the best care possible to its community.

4-H to offer Binocular, Firestarting classes

WARRENSBURG — The Warren County 4-H program will offer two Outdoor Skills 101 programs Wednesday, June 17, at the Cornell Cooperative Education Center The first program “Binocular Use” is open to all youth five and over and will begin at 6 p.m. Youth ages 5 to 8 must be accompanied by an adult. The program will introduce the basic parts of the binocular, how to adjust the binoculars, and how to focus the binoculars. A brief field walk/bird watch will end the program at 7:15 p.m. Youth may bring their own binoculars if they wish.

The second program Ò FirestartingÓ is open to youth 12 and over. The program will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Topics include fire safety, the three sides of the fire triangle, biofuel stoves, and ends with a marshmallow roast. Materials will be provided but participants are welcome to bring matches or flint and steel. Magnesium firestarters with compass and signal mirror are available from 4-H for $15, with parental permission.
