Ridin’ Hy pays it forward

This Week Gore little league baseball earns wins

By Ryan Edwards ryan@denpubs.com

WARRENSBURG Ñ Reservation changes and cancellations are a common occurrence staff at WarrensburgÕ s RidinÕ Hy Ranch see all the time, co-owner Carrie Beadnell said. Things come up, schedules changeÑ itÕ s the nature of the business. Late last month, however, Ranch staff were given a cancellation excuse they had never heard before when the Profile Senior High School in Bethlehem, N.H. cancelled their two-night reservation for a senior class trip just nine days before their scheduled arrival date. When Ranch staff returned a call to the school to inquire as to the nature of the May 22 cancellation, Profile High teacher and trip coordinator Kristy Duris told them the senior class couldnÕ t keep their reservation because they didnÕ t have the moneyÑ theyÕ d given it all away. Duris told them the schoolÕ s principal, Courtney Vashaw, was recently diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive cancer, the news of which she shared with her students to account for her absence from school. In response, two weeks before their trip, the senior class decided to donate close to $8,000 they had raised over the course of four years for their last hurrah together before graduation to help cover the cost of her care. Ò The school started doing fund-raisers, and the senior class held a meeting to vote on whether or not to donate the CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

JCS juniors hold prom at unusual venue By Ryan Edwards ryan@denpubs.com

JOHNSBURG Ñ Johnsburg Central SchoolÕ s junior class did things a little differently for this yearÕ s prom, opting to forgo the typical grandiose ballroom-style affair in favor of a venue with a more Ò countryÓ feel. This year, the class of 2016 became the first in JCS history to hold their prom in a barn. It all started when a teacher at JCS was married at Burlap and Beams in ThurmanÑ a re-purposed barn which hosts Adirondack-themed country weddings. Ò This yearÕ s prom is an offshoot of the

same ideaÑ but a little bit different,Ó said Superintendent Mike Markwica. The simple elegance and understated venue of this mountainside nuptial kindled the idea of a barn prom among the junior class, who decided on Ò A Night in the CountryÓ for this yearÕ s theme, Markwica said. But between them and their big country night stood an all-too-familiar roadblockÑ cost. Ò The class came to us with not a lot of money,Ó said prom coordinator Maria Glode, Ò and we knew that (other barn venues) were way out of our price range.Ó But the junior class wouldnÕ t be deterred. Lacking the necessary funds to

secure an established venue, they sought an alternative and began a fund-raising campaign to raise money for the eventÑ including a Thanksgiving pie-sale, two bake-sales, a bottle drive and two dances. Along the way, JCS junior Evan RiedingerÕ s grandparentsÑ Bob and Doris DeGroatÑ offered a barn on their Bakers Mills property for the dance free of charge, and the classÕ dream was set to become a reality. Naturally, however, this barn wasnÕ t prom-ready. So the junior class rolled up its collective sleeves and got to work, cleaning out

WESTPORT Ñ While red meat wasnÕ t on the buffet menu at last weekÕ s Essex County Republican Committee meeting at the Westport Hotel, Chairman Shaun Gillilland had plenty of it and he fed it to the room in chunks. The country is on the wrong track, said Gillilland, who took aim at the SAFE Act and last weekÕ s ex-

Gillilland hopes these and other issues will be enough to get the Republicans under his charge revved and ready for the next set of elections coming down the pike. While next yearÕ s presidential race is still 18 months out, voters will head to the polls this fall to
