Mental Health agency praised

Local Community, students contribute to Community Service

By Pete DeMola pete@denpubs.com

WESTPORT Ñ Making friends, graduating from academic programs and finding work. These were some of the life benchmarks shared by consumers at a Mental Health Association (MHA) in Essex County meeting last week. None of it would be possible without the agencyÕ s help, they said. MHA is a nonprofit that provides ancillary services to the county mental health department, like counseling, supported housing and a mobile crisis unit whose goal is to avoid hospitalization. Kerri said, as far as she knows, she may be the only person in the county who has completed courses at the Academy of Peer Services, a state-funded training and technical assistance center. She cited job coaching and group therapy as two programs that were critical for her transformation from a girl hiding under her hooded sweatshirt to a confident, poised young woman who is now holding down two jobs. Ò The human connections are really genuine here,Ó she said. “It’s the first time I ever felt like I fit in.” For many, group is the only time that people get out of their shells, she said.

Lake resident and Korean War veteran. It all started when Vonnie Liddle, the townÕ s event coordinator, contacted Farley to arrange a trip to Albany for local kids. During their conversation, Farley asked Liddle if she could recommend a veteran to honor at the ceremony. She offered Farley American Legion Post 1392 Commander Ken CannanÕ s phone number, who in turn nominated Casazza for the honor. Ò He seemed like the right guy because heÕ s a very talented man and he is just willing to help anywhere

he can, any time he can,Ó Cannan said. Ò HeÕ s not a man to sit in the corner.Ó The nomination was accepted, and from there Liddle, Cannan, Casazza and a number of legionnaires and their wives traveled together to Albany to attend the ceremony and have lunch with the senators. Ò We enjoyed it very much,Ó Liddle said. Ò I think it was a great ceremony and it certainly honored a welldeserving veteran of the area. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Indian Lake Faculty Association members, Elsa Schisler and Sue Norris show community pride in the recent Community Pride Day as they clean up along Route 28. Photo provided

MINERVA Ñ After two postponements, Minerva Central Jr./Sr. High School students and their teachers participated in a school and community service day Friday, May 1. The weather was perfect for outdoor work, and students accomplished even more than expected. Students who ventured into the community visited homes to rake, stack firewood and offer general help with spring chores and clean up. Six community membersÕ homes, as well as the Mountain Lakes Services property, were freshened up. In addition, a group of students raked and cleaned the upper half of Courtney Park. School-based activities included raking a large portion of the school grounds, cleaning windows in hard to reach areas in the building, finishing the alphabet mural in the elementary hallway and helping to inventory the library collection. Feedback about the day was positive from students and community members alike. Everyone agreed that it was a worthwhile experience that helped improve the look of the school and town. Given the ideal weather conditions and the great amount of work that was done, this day was definitely worth the wait.
