JOHNSBURG Ñ On Friday, April 24, Judith Dunkley saw an advertisement in the News Enterprise for personal loans with flexible payments. The ad Ñ purchased by Evergreen Lending Services Ñ boasted a 24-hour response, claiming bad credit was a non-issue. But she soon found the this was too good to be true. Ò We were really counting on it.” The man who serviced the loan — who identified himself as George Willcone Ñ assured the couple that his organization could alleviate the burden of their financial woes. Ò He was Mr. Sweetheart — so nice, so sympathetic,” Dunkley said. When she recalls this first encounter, however, she is not so enamored by what she now considers to be the sweet-talking swindler. Ò As of now, in my opinion, he was disgustingly nice,” she said. On the following Monday, April 27, Dunkley and her husband travelled to Staples in Queensbury, where a contract faxed by Willcone awaited them which, according to Dunkley, seemed legitimate even to bank officials.
