Essex County district attorney to seek third term Kristy Sprague, first elected in 2009, cites strong prosecution record, fiscal restraint as she seeks a third four-year term By Pete DeMola

pete@suncommunitynews.com

ELIZABETHTOWN — Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague has announced she is running for a third term as the county’s top law enforcement official. “It is my desire to once again seek re-election to this very honorable position,” Sprague said in a letter to constituents. Sprague was expected to formally make the announcement at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort in Lake Placid Thursday night, after this edition went to print.

The district attorney cited the county’s top issues as the opiate crisis, domestic violence and child abuse prevention. Since taking office in 2009, Sprague has played central roles in the creation of the Essex County Veterans Court, the Essex County Heroin and Opioid Prevention Coalition and the Child Advocacy Program in Clinton County. If re-elected, Sprague said that advocacy will continue. Combating animal cruelty cases is also a chief concern, she said. Sprague has never lost a felony trial. “My felony trial conviction rate continues to remain at 100 percent, since as a team, we have received guilty verdicts on the top counts in every one of the county level trials in the past seven years,” Sprague said. Sprague also said she will continue to be tough on pros-

ecuting DWIs. “The DWI Victim Impact Panel I developed in my first term continues to provide not only an additional punishment to offenders, but a critical educational component,” Sprague said. Sprague previously spent 19 years as a career prosecutor. That experience, she said, has allowed her to successfully prosecute drug offenders, DWI cases, sexual offenders, child abusers, animal abusers, domestic violence perpetrators and murderers. >> See SPRAGUE | pg. 13

Garden workshop slated for Minerva

Minerva staple returns with gardening lectures, raffles

MINERVA — The Minerva Service Organization will hold its fourth annual spring garden workshop on April 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Minerva Town Hall. The workshop features speakers on trendy gardening topics, a buffet lunch and provides attendees a chance to mingle with fellow North Country gardeners. Last year’s workshop was a breath of spring during a messy winter, said workshop co-chair Betty LeMay of Betty’s Funny Farm. This year’s sessin will build on last year’s event with presentations, vendor tables, a buffet lunch, master gardener and Cornell Extension Service tables and gardening raffles. Attendees are urged to bring gardening books, magazines, houseplants, pots and other garden items for a “freecycling” table. The fee for attending the workshop is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and includes the buffet lunch. To register for the workshop, call 251-5722 or 251-2929 by March 29 to reserve a spot.
