MINERVA — Angela McCall is not your typical high school senior. The Minerva student actually doesnÕ t even take classes at Minerva Central School, instead taking her first year of general studies at SUNY Adirondack. “She is the first student to do this in more than a decade from our school,” Superintendent Tim Farrell said. Her studies have also paid off, as McCall has been accepted into a joint medical doctoral program provided through a joint venture by Siena College and the Albany Medical College. “We are very proud of her and her accomplishments,” Farrell added. McCall said she was among 450 applicants for the Siena/ Albany program, with her and about 40 others being interviewed for the program and 10-14 accepted. “My first four years will be at Siena and then I will go directly in the Albany medical program,” McCall said. “I have always been interested in medicine, and the Siena program focuses on the humanities and the patient, that was really interesting to me.” “This program was really selective,” McCall’s mother, Kim, said. NORTH CREEK Ñ The North Creek Fire Department held an award ceremony on Saturday, March 7, to honor a 14-year-old resident who identified and reported a fire in his home. On Feb. 18, Logan McKinney, a ninth grade student at Johnsburg Central School, walked out of his home to start his motherÕ s car and noticed “a big orange glow” emanating from the chimney. He immediately called 911 and executed his familyÕ s evacuation plan. Logan’s father, Barry McKinney, a North Creek firefighter, had been asleep at the time. He said, “By the time I got out of bed, he’d already called 911 and had all the kidsÕ coats and boots and everything ready to go.” Not only is Logan the son of a North Creek Firefighter, but he is also a future member of the department. He is currently part of the Explorer Post — a program hosted by the Boy Scouts of America designed to provide its members with hands-on career experience in a chosen field. When Logan turns 16 he plans to become a junior member of the department. Logan was presented with three awards at the ceremony for his bravery and quick thinking: one from Warren County Fire Coordinator Brian LaFlure; one from North Creek Fire Department Chief Cherie Ferguson and one from Johnsburg Fire Department Chief Chip Aldrich. Logan’s younger siblings Trevor, Meaghan and Liam were also given awards for following their brother’s lead and proper fire safety procedure.
