NORTH CREEK Ñ Montana Berg, a senior at Johnsburg Central School, has always had music in her life. As a young girl, she remembers singing along with familiar tunes and falling in love with the sound of people harmonizing together. Fast forward to today and Berg is still deeply in love with singing, and is now preparing to travel to Providence, Rhode Island for the 2015 All-Eastern Music Festival.

For the first time in nine years, Johnsburg will have a student participating in the esteemed concert. Those chosen to participate at the must first jump through a series of musical hoops and gain the appropriate credentials. Berg was chosen two different times to perform a solo at the NYSSMA festival. The first time around Berg received a 97, the second go she snagged a near perfect score with a 99. After these first accomplishments, Berg was invited to sing at the Area All State, as a zone seven performer, where she made Conference All State and then All-Eastern. Those who sing as underclassmen at All-Eastern may then be chosen to participate in

All-Nation, but this year Montana will be going onto college so she will sing her heart out for the last time at the April 12 concert. Ò Technically NYSSMA is a competition and this is a reward,Ó said Berg. Ò We havenÕ t gotten the music yet, which is selected by the conductor.Ó Berg then explained the series of rigorous rehearsals that chosen chorus members will participate in beginning April 9 until Sunday night before the concert. Ò If I had applied to a music college, this would help me get in,Ó said Berg. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

INDIAN LAKEÑ Library Director, Nancy Berkowitz, answered a phone call on Jan. 23 to talk about a new genealogy program, but the conversation quickly turned into an explanation of the libraryÕ s newest services and what they are doing for the community. A new genealogy program through ancestry.com, has been granted to the library by funding from Crandall Library and Senator Farley, Berkowitz reported. ÒA ll libraries in the Southern Adirondack System should have the software rights by now,Ó said Berkowitz. ÒI t is only available for use in the library and is free for customers.Ó Ancestry.com allows subscribers to search for their extended family tree by accessing U.S. historical records, usually at the price of $19.99 per month. The well-known genealogy site isnÕ t the only thing the library has among its shelves of books, Indian Lake is now offering several other exciting services that Berkowitz thinks will greatly benefit the community. Ò I have to tell you we have lots of things going on,Ó said Berkowitz. Ò We are partnering with the Rural Law Center of NY to bring answers to legal questions for free at the library!Ó Civil cases like writing a will, a divorce, or family court will be able to be addressed through the library, Berkowitz noted. The RLC strives to deliver free legal advice to people in rural New York who cannot afford these services otherwise.

NORTH CREEK Ñ Relief prints and handmade books by Robert Walp and pen and ink drawings by Evan Chismark will be displayed from Saturday, Jan. 31, to Wednesday, Feb. 25. A reception to meet the artists will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Tannery Pond Community Center, 228 Main Street. Walp will be exhibiting relief prints and handmade books along with a selection of works from the Town of Chester Public LibraryÕ s Book Arts Collection. Ò I have a somewhat dichotomous personality as an artist, where one half lives in the world of fine art and micro-detail, and the other thrives on creativity and intellectually challenging concepts. Much of my work resides at the confluence of art and environmentalism. Nature is a huge influence on my work, but so is the DIY ethos associated with early skate and snowboard culture. I specialize in pen and ink drawings, but also love to paint on found materials, scrap wood and old skateboard decks. For more information go to evanchismark.com. The North Creek Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays.
