CROWN POINT — The CPCS varsity baseball team is known for playing late into the baseball season every year, and the team expects that will not change in 2016.

We are looking to be one of one of the top teams again in the league this year,” head coach Randy Pertak said. “We have a solid core of returning pitchers and positional players from last year’s squad. We hope to contend for the league title and a sectional title.”

Pertak said there will be plenty of varsity experience in the roster this season, including at the position marked in the scorebook as “1.”

“We have three pitchers who all saw time on the mound last year in seniors Kolby Pertak (league co-MVP) and Sam Millington, along with Junior Chance Potter,” he said. “Also seeing some of the pitching duties will be sophomore Hunter Pertak.”

The pitchers will be throwing to Judd DeBrobander, a senior captain who will provide leadership from the backstop position.

“He proved to be a solid catcher and threw

out a lot of base-runners,” Pertak said. “Hunter Pertak and Zach Spaulding are both in their second year on varsity will anchor the middle of the infield. Our returning and newcomers have all shown promise and all will contribute throughout the year. Sam Millington and Chance Potter will both give our pitching staff a boost and have shown that they contribute offensively.”

CROWN POINT — The Crown Point varsity girls softball program is one of the most decorated in Section VII, and they look to regain their claim over Class D in the coming year and continue their quest to making a deep run into the state championships.

“Our goal, like every team, is to win,” head coach Mike Ross said. “We want to improve on last year’s disappointing season, but we know it will take a lot of hard work and dedication.”

The Panthers return seven starters from the 2015 roster, including a trio of perennial all stars in seniors Logan Harrington, Maria Malone and Brittany Foote, along with juniors Amber DuShane and Savannah Crammond.

Freshmen Hannah Palmer and Shawna McIntosh also return to the lineup.

“So far I have been quite impressed with our defense and the skill level the girls brought with them,” Ross said. “We have our battery (Malone and Harrington) returning this season and newcomers with good fundamentals.”

While Malone will handle the bulk of the pitching duties, Ross said he can also get contributions from McIntosh, Palmer and Torrie Vradenburg.

Solid core leads youthful Panther golfers

CROWN POINT — While there are no seniors on the Crown Point varsity golf team in 2016, there is a wealth of experience returning to the squad, including their top golfer, an eighth grader.

“We have a mix of experience and newcomers this year, and I look forward to it,” head coach John Swinton said. “They’re a good bunch of kids, and are eager to get going. Riley Thomas was number one man last year, with a 51.1 scoring average, which I’m looking for him to improve this year. I anticipate some competition for playing positions across the board. There are several newcomers that are athletic and have the potential to pick the game up quickly, which I think will help our season along tremendously.”

The Panthers will compete in the MVAC which will feature only three teams, as they will see plenty of Willsboro and Westport, which could be a good thing as they will get plenty of experience on the Westport Country Club, site of this season’s Section VII championships.

TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga varsity golf team is prepared for the 2016 season seeking to gain ground on the rest of the CVAC teams.

“We have great numbers this year and this will help us become a more competitive team,” head coach Jay Wells said.

“We have enough experience, along with some new blood that gives us the opportunity to significantly improve in the win column. In order to achieve this we need to improve on our consistency in practice and in matches. We look to Duncan Bain, Joel Cook, Ethan Lobdell and Sam Shelmidine to provide positive leadership.”

TICONDEROGA — For the members of the Ticonderoga varsity baseball team, the goal for the 2016 spring sports season could not be any more clear — to get their Class C title back.

“Our goal as always is to win the CVAC Division II Championship as well as the Section VII/Class C Crown, both of which we failed to do last year after winning 10 straight prior to that,” head coach Dan Dorsett said.

While Dorsett’s team is young (three seniors, only two returning as starters), there is a lot of talent, starting on the mound with the big right-hander Ryan Trudeau, a four-year varsity starter and all-star each season. His battery mate, Brody Rocque, will be a solid defender behind the plate and will have to provide relief on the mound, as well, according to Dorsett. Dalton Granger and Evan Graney return to play middle defense and will be relied upon to add some offense spark as well.

“Pitching should be solid with Trudeau, Granger and Rocque but the depth is a question mark,” Dorsett said. “Defense needs to be the focus in order to take pressure off the pitchers and keep us in games. The offense will need to generate runs however we can to be able to stay in games and have a chance at the end.”

One help Dorsett could potentially see would be the return of junior Caleb Munson, a 2015 All-Star, who will begin the season injured as he is rehabbing from a football knee injury.

“This is a big loss both on offense and defense for the Sentinels,” Dorsett said. “The hope is he will be able to return sometime during the season.”

Sentinels seek to contend in VII

TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga varsity boys track and field team is going to have a long road ahead of them if they want to reach their goals in 2016.

What makes the road long? The fact they will be on it for the entire season while their home track gets an upgrade.

Nonetheless, head coach Walter Thorne believes his team has what it takes to get the job done.

“Our goal this outdoor season is to win Division II and be competitive in Section VII,” Thorne said. “Key players will be returning sprinter Collin Bresett, Justyn Granger, Cody Huestis, Colvin Chapman, Griffin Hughes and Adam Zhang; distance runner Brandon Romaca; and throwers, Ezra Long and Riley Quigley.”

Thorne also said there is a lot of potential in the newcomers to the program, including Jarod Pike (throws) who had a successful indoor season; Lance Shaner (sprints), Ty Schlogl (sprints); and Kohl Tucker (distance).

“Our general strengths are more depth than last season with 11 new athletes out for the team,” Thorne said. “Our weakness is the loss of premier sprinters Marcus Moser and Shawn Silliman to graduation and the fact that our track is under construction which means we won’t have the benefit of practic-

TICONDEROGA — For those who love practice on the Ticonderoga girls varsity track team, there is some bad news.

With the Sentinel’s home track currently being remodeled in what officials hope will become the premier site for competitions in Section VII, the team will have to find creative ways to stay in practice while not having a place to call home.

However, head coach Walter Thorne believes he has a squad which can adjust to the challenges.

“Our strength is we have athletes who can lead the way for our new athletes,” Thorne said. “Our goal is to finish better than last years 3-4 record, and to be more competitive against the Division I teams.

Sentinels look to be competitive

TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga varsity softball team is ready to get back to the business of winning league and sectional titles in 2016.

“The Ticonderoga Softball team will once again be looking to compete for top honors in the CVAC and win Sectionals for Class C,” head coach Eric Mullen said. “However it will not be easy as the Sentinels have to try and replace the losses of third baseman Lexi Moore and first baseman Nicole Fuller.”

What every strong softball team needs is pitching, and that is just what the Sentinels return in the form of CVAC co-pitcher of the year, Hannah Ross, the only pitcher to beat Saranac’s Tori Trimm in 2015, the girl she shared last season’s award with.

“All-Star Brittany Bruce will move from Left Field to First Base this year.,” Mullen said. “Third year veterans Haleigh Wright (shortstop), Savannah Bezon (second base) and Carly Campney (catcher) will be looked upon to lead the offensive attack this year while solidifying the infield.

Kristen Palandrani will be back in centerfield and Kaylee Coon will initially get the task of playing third base. Newcomers Abby Young, Emily Hood, Avery Alkinburgh and Cyley Quigley round out the roster.”

Vikings return everyone to fairways Vikings set to compete in deep Class D

PORT HENRY — The Moriah varsity golf team will have a familiar lineup for their CVAC matches, led by one of the top contenders for the Section VII individual title in 2016.

“With all six players returning from last year’s lineup, we should be able to improve on last years record of 4-6,” head coach Lynn Galm said. “Sophmore Joe Stahl, who participated at States for Section VII, will likely be a strong number one player for us. Juniors Kyle Wilson, Brandon Hammond and Nick Rotella all played consistently well last year and will be competitive in the 2-4 positions. Sophomore Ryan Munson and freshman Alex Larrow will be solid players in the 5-6 positions. Logan Lane a first year player could see some match play action also.”

Galm said the key for the season will be to shoot low not only at their home course, but throughout the league.

“To be successful this year we need to shoot consistently well on the away courses,” she said. “With the low number of golfers on the team everyone needs to shoot solid scores throughout the season.”

PORT HENRY — The Moriah varsity baseball team finished one win shy of the state tournament last season, falling to the Section VII/Class D champion Lake Placid Blue Bombers.

This season, the team hopes to rely on their experience to get back to Chip Cummings Field and beyond.

We return seven starters from last year’s team,” head coach Casey Nephew said.

“We should have strong play in the outfield with Taylor, Slattery, Billy Larrow and Dyllon Bougor.”

Nephew said the pitching staff will need to improve throughout the season as the Vikings return only two pitchers with experience as starters.

“Our players have worked hard over the first several weeks of practice,” Nephew said. “I expect us to improve as the year progresses and play fundamentally sound baseball. Like every year, our

Veteran battery could spell good things for Jaguars

NORTH CREEK — A top-level battery is good for powering electronics, and also good for powering a varsity baseball team.

The Johnsburg varsity baseball team is looking to rely on a tandem of Jimmy Morris on the hill and Mark Cleveland behind the plate.

“We will rely heavily on them for the success of our team,” head coach Andrew Snide said. “We lost some key fielders and hitters to graduation last year. Our younger players are adjusting well to the tempo/style of play of varsity and will fill nicely. We have the benefit of having six pitchers on our team which will help us with a tight schedule.”

Lady Jaguars see youth as an advantage

JOHNSBURG — While most teams in the Johnsburg varsity girls program have been based on youth for a couple of years now, the softball program is experiencing a rebuilding year.

However, head coach Dave Cavanaugh believes he has the talent coming to help them compete in the MVAC. “We lost seven seniors to graduation,” Cavanaugh said. “But we are looking to improve on last years record. We have one freshman and three sophomores added to the team who will help us. We also have three seniors returning who are good role models. We have a young team and will build on that.”

Cavanaugh said there will be a strong presence in the infield and he will be looking for key performances from Sara Pierson, Makayla Denno, Taylor Dwyer and Khaleah Cleveland.

North Warren baseball eyeing another Sectional run

CHESTERTOWN — With six starting players from last year’s team returning — after winning six of their seven concluding games of 2015, expectations are high among area fans for the North Warren baseball to continue their string of victories in 2016.

The Cougars exceeded expectations last year, taking their campaign into the Section II Semifinals after a regular season in which their win-loss record was evenly split, coach Josh Gifford said.

“We hope to continue right where we left off last season.

This hard-hitting squad also has a formidable defense, led by a deep pitching staff of Chris DeFranco, Ryan Fish, and James Hayes, three-year coach Josh Gifford noted.

“Chris, Ryan and James are key to the success of the program — and all have improved tremendously,” he said.”

These three athletes, as well as Tyler Peet at first base and Justin Needham at third, are positioned in the heart of the

batting lineup, and are expected to produce a substantial portion of the hits.

They are to be aided in their 2016 victory campaign

by Dylan Baker in left field or behind the plate, Joe Phelps as catcher or outfielder, Orry Bruce on second base, Dan Caunter in right field and Colin Gagnon as designated hitter or in outfield, where Nick Hitchcock and Nick Maltbie are likely to be seen.

This deep roster will be helping fill the key roles performed in 2015 by graduating seniors Daren Granger, Colby May and Dan Tennyson.

Last year, Coach Gifford may have been wary of the team’s offensive power, but they produced plenty of hits nonetheless. This year, he voiced confidence of his team’s offense.

“We are counting on production at the plate from everyone on the team,” he said.

Regardless of being one of the smallest schools in the region, the Cougars have always risen to the challenge, particularly at the end of the season. For three or more recent years, they’ve competed deep into sectionals.

Two years ago, they were ranked 20th in the state for their accomplishments.

Coach Gifford said his team was ready to take on schools of any size, considering his team’s strong work ethic, team spirit and will-to-win.

“We have worked very hard in off-season as well as spring, and we look forward to competing this year with our main focus being on team chemistry, hustle, and pitching,” he said.

Burghers have veteran pitcher, solid hitting

WARRENSBURG — A seasoned pitcher who knows what it takes to win under pressure, backed up by a formidable defense and teammates with slugging power — are all likely to power the Warrensburg High School Softball team to an outstanding 2016 season.

Three-year starting pitcher Bethaney Galusha — who as a sophomore in 2014 led the Burghers to a 12-3 season — will be pitching for her final year with Warrensburg, coach Teresa Colvin said.

“Bethaney is coming on strong, and she’s ready to go,” the coach said as Galusha threw one strike after another in a game against Johnsburg, working the edges of the strike zone for eight strikeouts in the 9-1 victory.

Despite possessing a strong core group of players, the Burghers have their challenges — replacing several talented athletes to graduation. Fortunately, however, several players are moving up to fill their key roles.

Michaela Nissen, 2015 first base anchor and a good hitter and bunt specialist, is likely to be replaced in the position by Jessica Benoit, a senior who is moving from her former position at right field, Colvin said.

“Jessica is a hard worker,” the coach said. “She can catch those balls on the bounce, and make the plays.”

Taking over for Catie Baker at shortstop will be Dianne Curtis, who demonstrated her potential when she dove and caught a low line drive slammed by a Johnsburg player in Wednesday’s game.

2015 graduate Aineen Callahan will also be missed both at the plate and in center field — but others are stepping up for the Burghers.

BOLTON/SCHROON — While Bolton spent the first two seasons of the 2015-16 working with Warrensburg, Schroon Lake pooled their soccer team with Johnsburg in the fall.

Now, the two schools will work together to bring a baseball team to the diamond in 2016.

The dual team will play in the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference, Schroon’s home conference while Bolton used to be a member of the MVAC until they moved to the Adirondack League several years ago.

“Our kids are very excited about the upcoming season and joining the MVAC,” head coach Mark Andrejkovics. “A strong relationship has formed between the players from both schools. They have put a lot of time into the offseason practices and are confident in being a tough team.”

Andrejkovics said the two schools bring a strong core to the field, with six players returning from the Bolton squad.

“We will be a very aggressive team at the plate and on the basepaths,” he said. “We have a lot of flexibility with players defensively.

The kids understand the importance of limiting extra outs and free base runners.”

Andrejkovics said the pitching staff will be anchored by Josh Curri-Brimhall with contributions from Daniel Malone, Derek DeZalia, Garrison Vileneuve and Tyler Dawson throwing innings. Vileneuve will also serve

time behind the plate as catcher, while DeZalia will be a key on the infield and Hall in the outfield, who will be flanked by Corey VanAuken and Michael Smith.

“Branden may be one of the fastest players in the league and will anchor the outfield,” Andrejkovics said.

Bolton/Schroon Lake ready for 2016 softball season

BOLTON/SCHROON — Two local schools have pooled their talent together in search of having a competitive season in the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference.

Schroon Lake and former MVAC school Bolton have come together for the season, with a roster of 21 student-athletes for head coach Michael Pockett to chose from.

“With a good number of returning veterans, this team will look to improve upon last seasons records and rely heavily on the experienced members of the team,” Pockett said.

“We are extremely excited to get our season going. We have been working hard on building ourselves from the ground up and truly prepare for anything we might face in competition. So far, we have seen the girls meet these challenges head-on.”

Pockett said the team has come together well defensively as the staff continued to push them in strength and conditioning.

“We need to continue to strengthen our offense,” Pockett said.

Pockett feels the team will be very strong on the left side of the infield.

“Madelyn Pratt is one of our toughest allaround players and rounds out the infield at third base with an incredibly fast and accurate arm,” Pockett said. “McKayla Vanderwalker is coming off a season of injuries which prevented her from showing her full

potential as a sophomore. This season, she is healthy and is an outstanding shortstop with great reaction time and quick hands. She is a vacuum in the infield.”

Orange prepared to compete in MVAC

INDIAN LAKE/LONG LAKE — The Indian Lake/Long Lake varsity baseball program is returning to the field after one year away in 2015, with coach Ron Linhart believing the team will be able to stay in the mix.

“Our goal is to stay competitive in our league,” Linhart said. “We have a very deep pitching staff, but we are very inexperienced. Some of our key players will be Steven Lepraire, Bryce Hutchins and Austin Pierce.”

MINERVA/NEWCOMB — The Minerva/ Newcomb varsity softball squad is seeking to replace experience lost from last year’s roster as they prepare for the 2016 season.

“We lost some very strong players from last season’s team,” head coach Bruce McGinn said. “We do have a nice core of returning players so we are hopeful to continue to be competitive in the league.”

Warriors have their sights set high for 2016

LAKE GEORGE — For many years, Lake George baseball teams have been dominant in the Adirondack League, particularly the West Division.

The Warriors’ legacy — which has resulted in three championship titles in recent history — has been built on players’ pride and their accompanying work ethic, rigorous conditioning as well as coaching expertise.

Last year, the Warriors achieved an admirable 8-2 record in the competitive Adirondack League, and they earned the status as a Section II semi-finalist.

PORT HENRY — The unified track team of Elizabethtown/ Lewis, Keene, Moriah and Westport is ready to take to the track and turf again this season with a core of younger talent.

“Our EKMW Track Team Goals are simply to improve each week,” head coach Luis Garnica said. “A number of events will have younger underclassmen in the lineup that are just getting their first taste of track. We will work a lot on fundamentals and encourage athletes to put in work to improve their own personal bests.”

Garnica said the younger athletes will have the fortune of learning from some very decorated seniors, including league and sectional standout Jonathon Gay. “We will be leaning on our Senior athletes for leadership,” Garnica said. “We hope they have a memorable season and look forward to following their success as they pursue other interests in college and beyond.”

WA R R E N S B U R G — For no less than 12 consecutive years, the Warrensburg baseball team has won a berth in the Section II tournament, challenging competitors with their scrappy, aggressive play.

Lady Cougars hopeful ‘16 may have breakout season

CHESTERTOWN — Destined to follow in the path of the two preceding North Warren softball teams, the 2016 Cougars are poised to surpass expectations and achieve a winning season.

Two years ago, two sophomore North Warren pitchers — Cate Hill and Courtney Viele backed up by catcher Madasyn Bush and teammates — turned around a lengthy slump: three consecutive one-win seasons.

That first year together, these players compiled a 5-6 league record (6-11 overall), playing against far-larger schools sporting full rosters of experienced players.

The first several games so far for 2016 have been a challenge, however, as three key players have been absent due to injuries, coach Renee Feldeisen said.

“Our 2016 team has great potential when we can all come together,” she said, adding that her players have substantial defensive skills but need to work on generating hits consistently. “At the start we lacked three strong players so as our season is progressing, we will strengthen our core.”

Acknowledging that her team has considerable talent, Feldeisen said her players enjoy a bond and a love of the sport — as well as a work ethic — that will be serving them well as they compete.

Prodigy pitcher powers 2016 Lady Warriors

LAKE GEORGE — Plenty of crowd-pleasing action is undoubtedly in store for area sports fans as the 2016 Lake George Softball team takes to the field.

The fans will be seeing the impressive throws of ninth-grade pitcher Rebecca Jeager who as an eighth grader in 2015 powered her team to an 8-3 league record during what had been billed pre-season as a rebuilding year.

Commenting that Rebecca works hard year-round with her father and various seasoned pitching trainers, Warrior coach Kyle Manny said he expects to see Jeager continue building her skills this season.

“Rebecca is a very talented athlete with a powerful fastball, she works the corners well and she throws a change-up that changes the pace — and she’s got good control,” he said, noting that Jeager has been training with Lake George alumnus Katelyn Callahan who from 2007 to 2010 dominated the Adirondack League and baffled opponents with her screwball and riser alongside her blazing fastball.

Also a key player for 2016 is junior Lacey Cormie, a second-year Varsity starter at shortstop, Manny continued.

“Lacey anchors the Lake George defense and has a solid bat,” he said.

Helping pitcher Rebecca Jeager behind the plate will be Abby Baertschi who is taking over the duties of talented 2015 Warrior catcher Julia McCabe, who graduated in June, along with center fielder Michelle Fisher.

Manny noted that Baertschi is strong and savvy on offense, as well as the ability to

throw with power.

The younger players will be moving into the positions vacated by graduation as they develop particular skills, coach Erik Hoover said.

“Graduating eight seniors, we lost a lot, but this year’s players have such a great work ethic, they’ll move up and be successful,” he said. “Our athletes have such a great work ethic — they are ‘all business’ — and they’re very coachable; they listen.

“Our ultimate goal is to bring home the state title in June,” Hoover said.

This team might be the one that attains that honor, Hoover concluded.

“We’ve got very good chemistry this year — and the team is full of hard workers,” said the coach who has for many years developed extremely competitive Warrior teams from raw talent that has not yet made its mark.
