Local students prepare to debate in Albany By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Johnsburg Central School was host to high school students from Minerva, Newcomb and Bolton central schools last week for a local YMCA Youth and Government conference. Participants presented and debated bills written by their peers. Youth and Government is a national club ini-
tiated by the YMCA in states across the country. Participating students mock the actual happenings in each branch of U.S. government. The goal of Youth and Government is to empower teens to make a difference in their communities and to groom the skills and experiences necessary for future leaders. Through discussions that ranged from punishments for convicted rapists to tax incentives designed to stimulate job creation, students pre-
sented their ideas to better their communities in the form of bills. They then asked technical questions and rose in favor and against

JCS takes a stand against bullying Anti-Bullying Committee in full swing By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Consistent with a national trend that is raising awareness about bullying in US schools, Johnsburg Central School (JCS) started an Anti-Bullying Committee (ABC) last year to engage local students in putting an end to bullying. “Bullying has become a national concern,” said Cathy Kennedy, ABC staff member. “ JCS students and staff have taken a stand to prevent bullying in school.” This year, ABC is in full-swing, according to Kennedy. Their goal is to join students and adults together in an ongoing effort to promote a positive school environment. Throughout National Bullying Awareness Week in Nov., ABC hosted activities within the school. Members wore red each day for unity, answered daily trivia questions, participated in a Dum-Dum Challenge and an Upstanders Breakfast at the end of the week where students and staff alike were honored for their actions.
