Rail operator looks to buy rail line into Newcomb By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — The president of the railroad company seeking to operate its trains in the southern Adirondacks confirmed Dec. 8 it may also buy a 20-mile stretch of track extending into Hamilton and Essex counties. Iowa Pacific Holdings is currently seeking to be Warren County’s rail operator and has garnered the support of a significant portion of county supervisors. And Iowa Pacific president Ed Ellis told WNBZ that if the company is granted the Warren County contract it will also look to buy the privately held northern stretch of track that extends as far north as Tahawus.
“We heard that it was available and we have a previous relationship with NL Industries, so I inquired and they offered it to us and we let Warren County know,” he said. “Until we’re selected as the operator, it really doesn’t mean anything because we obviously don’t have any interest in it unless we are the operator.” Ellis said the company is interested in preserving the North Creek-Newcomb stretch. He noted it could offer future freight opportunities. It would allow Iowa Pacific to run its freight trains to the doorstep of Barton Mines in North River. The northern line has been unused for 20 years and is currently owned by a subsidiary of NL Industries – Kronos Worldwide. Iowa Pacific has already

Goodspeed not seeking re-election in 2011 By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs NORTH CREEK — After two terms as the Town of Johnsburg’s supervisor, Sterling Goodspeed recently announced he will not be seeking re-election for a third term in 2011. “I have enjoyed serving the people of Johnsburg and it has been my privilege,” he said. “It is now time for me to return to my law practice and my family.” Over the past four years, Goodspeed has seen much progress and change come to the Johnsburg area. The Gore Mountain inner-connect is in the midst of building a closer relationship with the ski area and the business district and as downtown develops, Goodspeed will transition as a part of that development. He recently moved his private law practice to a downtown location and will dedicate all his time and energy to that once his current term is up. Goodspeed characterized his decision as a self-imposed term limit. He also served with the Warren County District Attorney’s office for two terms in 1994. “When I took the job, I never intended to stay forever and two terms has been a rule of thumb for me,” he said. Goodspeed feels that he has been energetic and excited throughout his two terms and has worked hard at his position. “Other members of the community deserve a chance to serve,” he said. “I look forward to working with them and moving the region forward.”
Many of the issues that Goodspeed worked on throughout his four years as supervisor are coming to a conclusion, making now a sensible time to transition. “The inner-connect lift opens this month,” he said. “I feel I have fundamentally changed the way Johnsburg looks at its budget — lower taxes three consecutive years in a row and stabilizing the county budget.” Goodspeed said he looks forward to more free time to spend with his family as his oldest son prepares to graduate from high school and attend college. Serving as supervisor and Sterling Goodspeed having a family has been a difficult balance, he said. “I want to be involved with his college search rather than circulating petitions for reelection,” he said. Goodspeed has been a vocal advocate for the Johnsburg region his entire life and believes that his two terms were some of the most exciting times to serve in that capacity. Johnsburg has seen rapid commercial expansion, 16 new businesses, significant expansion at Gore Mountain and a smaller, leaner, cheaper government, according to Goodspeed. “The things happening in Johnsburg will redefine our region,” he said. “This town serves as a model for other towns in the Adirondack Park — dedicated to progress, but invested in heritage and environment.”
