Chamber announces a ‘brand promise’ for Gore Mountain Region By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK - Over the past three years, The Gore Mountain/Town of Johnsburg Chamber of Commerce has been deep in study and analysis of how to bring healthy development to the area. They will present the results of its branding project for the Gore Mountain Region at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the Copperfield Inn. The regional chamber, developed in 2007, sought out the Glen Group of North Conway, NH to act as consultants on the project. Nancy Clark, owner and president of the Glen Group will present the recommended branding including a new logo and other graphics, a tagline, and a “Brand Promise” for the region. The goal of this brand project is to create a definitive Gore Mountain Region brand so that it can be incorporated throughout the Gore Mountain Region through the Chamber of Commerce and its membership. The branding efforts will be incorporated into all marketing, advertising and other communications. Chamber members, project supporters and interested citizens are urged to attend. “We live in a threatened area, and in difficult economic times,” said past chamber president Ed Milner. “This is a serious and wellthought out effort to do something positive about economics in our area.” The Gore Mountain Region, as described in the project, includes all or portions of the communities in the towns of Indian Lake, Johnsburg, Minerva, Newcomb, Chester, and Warrensburg – parts of three counties and more than a dozen hamlets. The chamber seeks to recognize the commonalities of the communities clustered around Gore Mountain and the Upper Hudson River, and the distinctive features each offers as part of the larger community. Materials studied in development of the regional brand included focus group interviews with area residents and businesses, Internet surveys, and a major review of ski industry data. Glen Group, a full-service marketing agency with a specialty in resort marketing conducted the research, analysis and strategic planning. The project has been funded by a combination of Town of Johnsburg Occupancy Tax dollars plus matching funds from local individuals and businesses. This project represents a major effort to facilitate marketing messages from throughout the community, recognizing the unique features our region offers to attract Adirondack visitors.

Murphy justifies ‘No’ vote on health care By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — The health care bill that Congress passed Saturday would hurt small businesses and doesn’t include appropriate incentives for cost control and for prompting citizens to lead healthy lifestyles, U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy (D-Glens Falls) said Monday morning. Traveling through Warrensburg and Thurman to meet with his constituents, Murphy answered questions on why he voted “No” on the Affordable Healthcare for America

Act that the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed Saturday in a historic 220215 vote. Murphy was among the few 39 Democrats who voted against the bill. While some political observers wondered how the freshman Congressman could vote counter to national Democratic leadership after President Obama lobbied so hard for the bill, others noted that his vote might have been condoned by Democratic leadership, after they had secured enough votes to pass the bill —

MINERVA - Residents of the Town of Minerva have no doubt recognized the absence of the Winter Carnival during the colder months. It has been several years since the popular annual carnival has been active in providing outdoor and indoor winter events for residents of Minerva. Local residents feel that it is time to get the carnival moving again. It is a special part of the community and has been missed. To get it off the ground, there will be a planning meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The meeting will take place at 6 pm at the Minerva Town Hall. The purpose of the Winter Carnival is to not only sponsor a day of activities for people of any age, but to encourage residents of Minerva to venture from their homes and enjoy the beauty and fun that wintertime in the Adirondacks can provide. All interested individuals and organizations are thoroughly invited to attend the planning meeting. Come with ideas for activities, refreshments and bring lots of enthusiasm. For more information contact Mike Corey at 251-5060.

Lady Jags end a winning season By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com The season of good cheer, good food, including for some favored birds, and of yelling and waving at the bluejays and squirrels is here—oh joy. In most recent years we have not seen the beautiful sky blue representatives of the jay family gobbling our (expensive) hulled sunflower seeds, which every creature from chipmunk to redpoll to evening grosbeak is happy with. Even the tiny finches, which cannot handle sunflower seeds with the hulls on, spread themselves out on our feeding area, a slanted metal roof covering the car, contentedly chewing the membrane off the seeds and eating the meat (no squabbling necessary!). But while most birds take one or two seeds to eat or store, bluejays fill their crops (or whatever, I haven’t been able to find out what their burglar sacks are like) while your back is turned for a second, fly off and dig holes to cache the seeds for a “rainy day.” We have watched bluejays take seventeen whole corn kernels at once and are aghast at how many sunflower seeds must fit in there. I would buy some corn for them, but I don’t need the 50 pound bag they come in. Our bird feed purchasing agent hates bluejays for this propensity and capacity, but as John Eastman says in his excellent Birds of Forest, Yard, and Thicket, the same thieving scoundrel also is responsible for planting untold numbers of beech and oak forests following the glacier meltback of 10,000 years ago, and now after fires or clearcuts. Everyone appreciates oak trees, if only for their firewood potential. Of course that is not the birds’ noble intention, but they forget or don’t need all the acorns they stash in the fall. The jay family, in our case in the Adirondacks the ravens, crows, bluejays and gray jays, is known for its intelligence. What inspired me to write this time was what seems to be an indication of something other than the fabled “bird brain.” After we started feeding this fall, a few bluejays (which might have been natives who knew us from last winter, or ones migrating south from farther north) sneaked in quickly and quietly, I think watching for the hands that open the sliding door and the mouths that make a lot of noise. (Do they feel the injustice of it all—the hands holding seeds for the chickadees but chasing them away?) A few weeks ago when the seeds were all gone from the roof, I heard a babbling, squawking bird noise, and there was a jay looking in the glass door and fluttering its wings by its sides, the way young birds just out of the nest do when begging for food! It looked as if it knew what it was doing--but it didn’t work. If you are not too busy scaring away your bushy tailed birds and the bluejay hogs, look for the brown creepers which hang out with the chickadee, nuthatch, and woodpecker crowd. They are almost always there, skittering up tree trunks looking for tiny insects, eggs and spiders. They look a bit like a small brown mouse, but after climbing one tree they fly down to the bottom of another and jerk their way up again. Their breasts are white and if you can find a good picture you’ll see that they have yellow stripes on their wings. They are about the first bird to sing in the spring, a very high but musical song. And they build an amazing nest behind a hanging piece of bark on a dead pine. I’ve watched more than one disappear behind bark where they have built a hammock shaped nest. Up to eight eggs are laid--that has to be one crowded nest. Fledglings roost on a branch in a tight circle at night, heads to the center. Now there’s a prize winning picture for a photographer as I don’t think it has ever been done.

JOHNSTOWN - Johnsburg brought home a league title and an undefeated season, but could not hang on in sectional play. They fell to 2-1 to Greenwich last Wednesday in the Class C championship of the Section II Field Hockey Tournament at Knox Field. The Jaguars were seeded first and received a bye out of the preliminary rounds of sectional play. The secondseeded Witches capitalized on their first two shots of the half and secured the win early. Those were the only shot opportunities they had the entire first half. Dani DeGregory found the cage off a

penalty corner pass from Kathleen Isgro on the first goal and Abby Dusha added the second from the left off a pass from Kate Andrews. Johnsburg got on the scoreboard with 2:48 remaining in the half. Kelly Backhurst fired a shot at the Witches goal and the rebound came right to the stick of Kelsey Williford. She jabbed it home and secured what would be the final score of the contest. Despite the score, Johnsburg had a 122 shot advantage and 7-1 corner advantage. "When you give up two goals in the first 10 minutes, it's tough," Johnsburg coach Jill Toney said. "We scored in the first half and made it a game. We had opportunities and it wasn't for lack of try-

ing." The second half was scoreless and generated little excitement until the final minute. Johnsburg had three penalty corners in the final seconds. On the first one, Greenwich goalie Meg Dusha kick-saved a hard, long shot from Blackhurst. The other two did not yield shot opportunities. Johnsburg has never brought home a sectional title, but has made appearances in the Class C final two of the last three years. The Lady Jags, however, left nothing on the field this time. Their loss to the Witches was a valiant effort after a successful and undefeated season. "I'm proud of these girls.” said Toney. “They played right to the bitter end."

Cross Country finish strong at Adirondack League Championships By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY - The Johnsburg Cross Country runners finished strong at season-end races. On Oct 29, the varsity runners participated in the Adirondack League Championships at Queensbury High School. On the boys side, Matt Hayden and Lance Baker ran their personal best on this day and Hayden was able to clinch a top 10 finish. Levi Kranick ran well despite recovering from the flu. For the girls, Bridgette CroomsSchenk and Kendyl Morse both logged impressive times. Crooms-Schenk with an 11th place finish and Hayden with his 10th place finish earned spots on the Adirondack League All-Stars. Section II races were held on Friday Nov. 6 and proved to be a good day to

run for the Jaguars. All varsity runners ran at least 40 seconds faster on this course than they had three weeks prior. “They peaked for this final race and really left everything on the course,” said head coach Gary Wilson. Matt Hayden finished in 35th in 18:33. Lance Baker in his first complete season ran the course in 19:16 for 52nd place, and Levi Kranick covered the course in 20:05 for 65th place. The weather turned as the girls took the course and temperature dropped as the humidity rose. Despite the change, Bridgette Crooms-Schenk finished in 22nd place with a time of 22:53. Her final race proved to be her best performance ever. Morse finished out in 34th with a time of 24:38. “I was so proud that all the varsity runners had a personal best time,” said Wilson. “They really gave everything they had during these races.”

October 2009 was a very cool month, as well as rainy, with only two 60 degree days - just a hint of Indian Summer. October is the peak of the Fall foliage season and by the end of the month only the oak leaves remain to carry a little color into early Nov. The average high was 50.9 degrees and the average low was 35.8 degrees, giving us an average of 43.4 degrees - 2.7 degrees below normal and the fourth coldest on record. The coldest Oct. was in 1992 when the average temperature was 41.7 degrees. In 1988 the average was 43.0 degrees and 43.1 degrees in 1993. The warmest Oct. was in 2007 when

the average temperature was 52.2 degrees. The highest temperature was 69 degrees and was recorded on Oct. 22 and the lowest temperature of 20 degrees was recorded on Oct. 19. A killing frost finally occurred here in Riparius on Oct. 12 when the temperature reached 27 degrees. There were 670 degree days bringing the heating seasonal total to 995.5. Rainfall for the month was 4.15 inches, only 0.29 inches above normal. Our seasonal total is now 37.64 inches, 2.45 inches above the normal of 35.19 inches. There was measurable precipitation on 16 days, with the greatest amount of 1.46 inches recorded on Oct. 24. There was no trace of snow recorded here in Riparius, although the higher elevations in the area did record some measurable amounts. The river reached its highest level of 5.37 feet on Oct. 26 and its lowest level of 3.69 feet on Oct. 22.

o, I’m sitting at an establishment in Ocean City last Sunday with my buddies, I’ve got a little miniature mallet in my hand and a dozen oysters and a pile of crabs in front of me. You’d think things were great. Alas, before me, on the 50-inch flat screen TV, The New York Football Giants were allowing the Chargers to march down the field with less than two minutes in the game to steal a victory. Talk about hard to swallow. Thank God they have a bye this week. Things are getting interesting at the top of our picking pack, with Matt Aldous holding on to a two-game lead over Sue Ringler. Dan Alexander Jr. and Sue Davis had 11-2 weeks to bring them within three along with Troy Galusha, who led the week at 12-1. A reminder that Thursday night games begin (began) this week, and by the time you get this column in its printed version, San Francisco will have defeated Chicago. I can only hope the Iggles and Cowgirls both lose this weekend. I think the Chargers at home will take Philly, but can’t bring myself to pick the Packers over Dallas for the sake of my standings. Sunday’s best should be Cincy at Pittsburgh and the Patsies at Colts. I’ll take both home teams. Once again, we have a few missing pickers, so be sure to get your picks on time. Should there have been a fax/e-mail problem, just get me your record for the week and I’ll update it next time – remember, this is all just good, clean fun, so the honor system applies. Remember, you can make your picks online at www.denpubs.com. Go to Extra! Extra! and select “Contests.”

Murphy From page 1 to give Murphy leeway to bond with his constituency, which is heavily Republican. But Monday, Murphy said his No vote was merely a matter of protecting the viability of small businesses, avoiding the spectre of runaway health care costs, assuring that incentives were in place to boost health across the nation, and scrapping proposed taxes that would target local industries. “In this legislation, we didn’t do nearly enough to control costs — we allowed a system in which big insurance companies have the ability to set a lot of their own prices, and we weren’t doing enough to fix some of the broken incentives,” he said. Murphy said he had proposed provisions that gave citizens a premium discount if they kept their blood pressure and cholesterol down — but these specifics were cut out of the bill’s final version. “We’ve got to design incentives so people are prompted to take care of their health and reduce some of the overall costs — we’ve got to get everyone in the nation involved in working on these health care issues,” he said. “Health care costs are too big,

and they’d be getting bigger in the reform act, without the incentives.” He also said he staunchly opposed the bill’s provisions that would impose taxes on the area’s two largest industries: medical device manufacturers and paper mills. The provision calls for medical device firms to pay a new tax of 2.5 percent of their sales revenues, and for paper companies to be excluded from a $1.01-per-gallon biofuel tax credit, which would be substantial for the local operations. “If this bill comes back from the Senate with the same tax provisions, we’re going to do everything we can do to mitigate the taxes proposed for our local mills and medical device manufacturers,” Murphy said. That’s not all he objected to. He said the bill should focus more on quality of health care, rather than quantity. Doctors now are reimbursed according to the number of patients they see, he said, rather than the outcome of the examinations. “They became doctors to get people well, not to see how many people they can run through in 10-minute appointments,” he said. “For the doctors to pay their bills, they have to jam through a whole lot of visits in a day —

this frustrates the doctors and patients, and leads the system in the wrong direction.” The other problem, he said, is the proposed 8 percent tax on businesses that have a payroll of $500,000 or more — which would burden tens of thousands of small businesses across the nation that are the main source of jobs for the nation’s workforce, he said. Murphy said he was frustrated that the payroll cutoff for the 8 percent tax was far too low in the House bill, and that a proposed tax credit to offset this staggering new tax would expire in only two years. “So many of our small businesses can’t really afford to provide health care,” he said. “In this bill, we’d see the health care costs explode, and we’d be putting our small businesses and government on the hook to pay for them.” Murphy said he does support health care reform, if it’s designed right. “There’s widespread agreement about the problem, but a lot of disagreement about the solution,” he said, noting that he fully supports the concept of getting every American covered with affordable health care coverage, that lifetime caps on health care payments should

What a beautiful fall week. There are so many things to be thankful for in the Adirondack Mountains. The leaves have fallen and we are waiting for the big, white, fluffy comforter. Many families are already making plans for Thanksgiving remember to give thanks in all things. Remembrances Fern Dalaba Turner passed away on Oct. 30 after a week in the hospital. Her calling hours and funeral were on Nov. 3. Many family members were able to visit in her honor. Her brother and wife, Rev. Oliver and Ginny Dalaba traveled from Florida for the funeral. She will be greatly missed. Shannon and Mary Ellen Wood and children Shiloh, Sebastian and Serenity, and Janice Moody will be thinking of their father Pete Moody on Nov. 14. It has been 5 years since he passed away. Visits Fred Allen and friend Ted from New Jersey spent a week in the area. While here they replaced a roof for Mike Schilinski. Arlene Ordway, Rosalie Russell and Agnes Straight enjoyed taking a cake to Leona Dunkley for her birthday at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home in North Creek. Happy Anniversary to: Howard and Evelyn Tucker, who will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 25. Happy Birthday to: Lois Allen, Matthew Millington, Courtney Dunkley Richards, Gail Harris, Maravene Lawreance, Amy Dunkley Cleveland, Zachariah Morehouse, Reisha Thissell, Mike Denno, Cole Werger, Keisha Sprague, Crystal Hayes, Dan Bacon, Sandy Chainao, Kevin Stafford, Breanna Allen, Nicholas Mulligan, Penny Allen and Ralph Hitchcock. Couponing's Best-Kept Secrets: Don't Believe Everything You See

O

ne of the most common misconceptions about coupons is that the item that you buy must match the picture that appears on the face of the coupon. It's true that you can use the coupon to purchase the item that's pictured. However, you want to pay close attention to the text on a coupon, too. After all, the text contains the precise information that the coupon's bar code is programmed to deliver at the checkout counter. Which brings us to this week's tip.

Super-Couponing Secret: Forget the Photos, Read the Fine Print It's a very common marketing technique for a manufacturer to show a new or more expensive variety of a product on the face of a coupon in the hope that you will buy this new or more expensive variety. If you read the coupon, though, you'll discover that the offer is good for "$1 off any [brand] product." Consider a coupon for a new variety of cold medicine put out by a leading manufacturer. The coupon may show the new, multi-symptom medicine in the picture, hoping that you will want to try it, but the text states clearly that you can use the coupon on any medicine from this manufacturer. Learning to distinguish between what the photo suggests and the full terms of the deal that the text actually spells out is a skill that can really help shoppers, giving us more freedom to buy the item we may prefer versus the variety shown in the photo. I recently had a coupon for a new variety of skin-care product. It showed a photo of the lotion, and the text read "$1 off [brand] lotion, body wash, or any [brand] product." That wording is key! When I didn't see a good sale for the company's lotions or body wash, I did see a bar of the same brand of soap - for 99 cents. With my coupon, it was free. Brand-name sandwich meat is an area where it can pay to read coupon wording closely. People often ask me how to save at the deli counter. It's not always easy to get discounts on fresh-cut cold cuts. But many meat manufacturers sell pre-packaged deli meats, too, and there are often coupons for those. Look closely at the wording on these

coupons. While the coupon may show a boxed or bagged variety of meat, the wording often spells out a wider deal, such as "$1 off 1 package of [brand] sliced By Jill Cataldo meat, or 1lb. of [brand] sliced meats at the deli." These coupons are a great way to save on fresh-sliced meats of the same brand at the deli counter. Ready for another tip? This one involves brand loyalty. While we all have favorite brands of things, our brand loyalty can cost us in the long run if we aren't shopping smart for those favorite-brand items when they're on sale. Major brands often engage in what the industry calls "price wars" with one another. We see this frequently with items such as pasta sauce, where numerous brands compete to sell what is essentially the same product. Brand A may be cheap one week, but next week Brand B barrels in with an even lower price. This works out well for shoppers who aren't particularly partial to any specific brand. But, if we think "I really like Brand A, and I will always buy it no matter what," it's great when Brand A is on sale for $1.29 a jar and we've got a 75-cent coupon for it. But when the sale ends and Brand A goes back up to $3.29 a jar, we'll be paying the price. If we can let some of our brand preferences slide a little bit and fluctuate along with the sales, we can save more money in the long run. Next week, I'll share one of the biggest and most surprising tips with you. It involves which days of the week are the least expensive days to shop at the grocery store. You might be surprised to learn what they are! © CTW Features

To the News Enterprise: The rock dust tailings from Barton Mines are indeed a poor product for road use. The particle size is so small it becomes dust when dry and forms a slurry when wet to make driving on it similar to driving in slush. In a rainstorm, a car is thrown from side to side going uphill. In fact, Barton removes the tailings from the mill in a slurry mixture by pipe to its tailings pile. I live on Schoolhouse Road and shortly after I bought my house, maybe 10 years ago, I talked my boss George Heim into giving the Town of Johnsburg tailings from his Harvey's Tailings pit for use on Schoolhouse Road. These old style tailing are a much larger particle size than the rock dust. Prior to this the town had used the beach sand from the pit in town. Again, a small particle size product with the same limitations as the current rock dust, probably worse when driving on it in rain. These “old style” tailings are still available at the Harvey's Tailings pit and at the larger pit near Garnet Hill Lodge in North River. The current road surface might improve dramatically if a larger particle size product is mixed with the rock dust surface. I can't believe the Town of Johnsburg just went ahead and coated all the roads with the rock dust. Why wasn't there a “demonstration road” used to see just how this product would hold up and what residents thought of it? Did anyone ever consider the runoff response of this rock dust in the local streams, or other environmental impacts like air quality? I don't think many of the roads needed any new product at all. But, if it's free, it's for me! Like Archie Bunker said to Edith “you would buy dirty socks just because they were on sale!” Try and drive up Schoolhouse Road during the next rain storm – you'll experience the rock dust first hand. To the News Enterprise: I am writing to thank the voters of the Town of Minerva for electing me as their new Town Supervisor. It is an incredible honor and I look forward to serving. For those voters who I was not able to see personally during the campaign, please know that your thoughts and concerns matter to me and I look forward to working with you in the coming months. In an era when negative campaigning has become all too common, I am proud of the fact that this year ’s local elections in Minerva were not negative. Thanks to my opponents, Dave Labar and Paul Clickner and to the candidates for Town Board for their commitment to campaigning honorably. No candidate succeeds alone. I am grateful for the friends and neighbors who supported me by posting signs on their lawns and encouraging me throughout the campaign. I especially want to thank Lester Sternin, John and Wanda Callihan, and Joe Kelly for their constant advice and support. Thanks also to the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee, to my friends at the Essex County Democratic Committee and the Democratic Women of Essex for their support. Last, but not least, I am grateful for the patience and good humor of my amazing family. Sue Montgomery Corey Minerva

First Halloween Benefit a success To the News Enterprise: The North Country Hardship Fund would like to thank all who came out to support the fund on Oct. 31. The Halloween Benefit which was held at Laura’s Bar and Restaurant was a huge success. There was a costume and pumpkin carving contest, raffles and great music played all night. Everyone had a great time for a great cause. Thank you, Laura and Kim for thinking of us and sponsoring our first Halloween Benefit. A BIG thank you also goes out to all the area businesses that donated food and raffle items. We are so grateful for everyone’s generosity and support. The Hardship Fund would also like to take this opportunity to thank the members of “Hoffmeister” for holding a benefit concert on Oct. 17. Many people donated their time and hard work for this fundraiser. There were bands and food all day and night. Good times were had by all and you did a wonderful job. Thank you for your donation. The donations from both events will be put into the fund to assist people in Warren, Washington, Essex, Hamilton and Saratoga counties that have had a recent tragedy affect their lives. Thank you one and all for your continued support. The North Country Hardship Fund
