By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY — On a work-break Nov. 2, Shannon Slater of Wevertown casually bought a scratch-off Lottery ticket and took it back to her job as Legal Recording Clerk in the Warren County Clerk’s Office. Scratching off the rubbery substance that obscures the letters in a crossword formation on the DoubleTriple Cashword card, Slater was happy when she figured out she probably won $1,500. Soon after, she called her husband Chris, who was at his mother ’s house on his day off from work at the Warren County Jail as a guard. Within minutes, Shannon Slater figured out that she hadn’t won $1,500, but she’d probably won the $300,000 top prize — a hunch that was confirmed first by co-workers. Still unsure of her winnings, Shannon Slater drove to the new Stewart’s convenience store at 1002 state Rte. 9 in Queensbury to have the ticket doublechecked. Yes, the Lottery ticket indeed yielded $300,000 in the instant-winnings game. Returning to work, Slater was

JCS students give back this Christmas By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Johnsburg Central School (JCS) students are concentrating more on giving this Christmas than receiving. Under the direction of longtime home and careers teacher at JCS, Lisa Provencher, a group of students is continuing to give
life to an annual volunteer program called Operation Santa Claus by raising funds to support area families in need. Provencher will soon retire from JCS after 31 years of teaching. The program began under her supervision in 1981 and has been successful ever since. “The students were ecstatic when I first introduced them to the idea,” she said. “They were eager to be able to do for others and it is important that they learn how to do that.”

Newcomb students put a new spin on trick-or-treating By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpuns.com NEWCOMB — Ninth grade students in Newcomb, donned in their long-awaited Halloween costumes, hit the streets for much more than candy Oct. 31. Instead of just receiving, they joined students from across the capital region in handing out chocolate treats in hopes of raising awareness of the benefits of fair trade chocolate. Named “Reverse Trick or Treating,” the campaign was developed as part of the Fair Trade Project of the Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State. In exchange for Halloween candy, each student handed out a piece of fair trade chocolate (Equal Exchange, Sweet Earth and Coco-Zen) with information regarding the child labor, forced labor, and trafficking that is often widespread on contemporary cocoa farms. “The project serves as a protest to the horrifying fact that much of the chocolate given out on Halloween comes from cocoa grown and harvested with abusive child labor and sometimes slav-

ery,” said Martha Schultz of the Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State. In Newcomb, the effort was introduced by NCS staff members Denise Bolan and Martha Swan, who have attended conferences on the topic of fair trade goods. “Fair trade chocolate could put an end to the child slavery and trafficking that is present in the cocoa industry,” Bolan said. Bolan and Swan introduced their students to the issues through a documentary called “The Dark Side of Chocolate,” which offers evidence that child labor, trafficking, and slavery are rampant in the cocoa industry. “They were moved by it,” said Bolan. “And then a group of them wanted to get more involved and decided to take part in the Reverse Trick or Treating activity.” Nearly a decade ago, a series of media efforts revealed child and forced labor and trafficking on cocoa farms in West Africa, which is the source of 70 percent of the world’s cocoa, led to public
