BAKERS MILLS — It’s fitting that the J&J Foxx Lair Tavern hold a fundraiser for Bruce and Amy Cleveland, who lost their home to a fire Saturday, Oct. 27. J&J’s bar manager, Joelene Slater, was the one who found the fire and called 911. Slater had just closed the tavern at 1:30 in the morning and was driving down the road when two deer ran in front of her vehicle near the church. She slowed down and watched them. “I say God sent these two deer out to tell me to look to my left, and watched them go across the road, and when I did I see this glow on Edwards Hill,” Slater said. “So I drove up there, and their car was parked out front but there was no one around, so I called 911.” Warren County Emergency Services received the call at 1:37 a.m., according to Warren County EMS Director/Fire Coordinator Brian LaFlure. Slater was at the Cleveland’s 95 Edwards Hill Road home in Bakers Mills doing what she could to help the Cleveland’s before firefighters arrived. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Several improvements in place for new ski season By Andy Flynn andy@denpubs.com

NORTH CREEK — Temperatures dropped into the teens the night of Monday, Nov. 5, and that was plenty cold to make snow at the Gore Mountain ski center. So they did. With 18 days before opening day —

based in Lake Placid. The entire Northeast was plagued with warmer-than-average temperatures last winter, hurting tourism because many ski areas had limited trails available. However, Gore Mountain was able to ride out the warm weather, for the most part, and boasted great skiing for much of the season because an additional 160 high-efficiency tower guns were installed prior to the 2011-12 season. This past summer was spent adding five sets of hydrants with tower guns

Friday, Nov. 23 — crews at Gore Mountain began making snow this past week in hopes of creating a deep enough base to give them an edge when warmer temperatures arrive. “We had a really good first night of snowmaking,” said General Manager Mike Pratt. “We ran over 70 guns. There was very little wind, and temperatures got down to the teens.” Gore’s sister ski center — Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington — also began making snow the night of Nov. 5. Both facilities are operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority,

NORTH CREEK — The Tannery Pond Community Center will honor its volunteers with a “Celebrate the

Gift of Giving” weekend Nov. 16-17 featuring the “hard-charging and powerful” swing sounds of Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. This two-day tribute starts Friday, Nov. 16 with performances at 7 and 9 p.m. at the Tannery Pond Community Center and will continue with a Dinner Dance at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Copperfield Inn. “The whole reason why we put

this together was to thank everybody,” said Bernadette Speach, executive director at the Tannery Pond Community Center. “So many people have volunteered, given their time — their skills, their services — over the first 10 years of Tannery Pond. But this is not just about Tannery Pond. The village North Creek, the town of Johnsburg, wouldn’t be the wonderful place that it is today without these people offering their

time and their energy to make it what it is.” While researching the perfect act for the volunteer tribute, Speach sought the input of the other Tannery Pond partners, including the Widlund Gallery, Upper Hudson Musical Arts and Our Town Theatre Group. “I found that most people really love swing music,” Speach said.
