DEC announces reopening of Adirondack roads By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com RAY BROOK — Four roads in the Adirondack Forest Preserve that were closed earlier this year due to budget cuts have been reopened, said now former Department of Environmental Conservation commissioner Pete Grannis recently. Lily Pond Road in the Lake George Wild Forest in Horicon, Gay Pond Road in the Hudson River Special Management Area in the Lake George Wild Forest in the town of Warrensburg, and Indian Lake Road and Otter Brook Road in the Moose River Plains Wild Forest in Inlet have all reopened. Teaming with the efforts of local governments and highway crews, the roads are now passable by the public. Among the crews that pitched in, the highway departments from Hamilton County and the towns of Indian Lake and Inlet replaced culverts, filled holes and
graded to reopen Indian Lake and Otter Brook roads. “We are grateful for the help provided by local governments and other partners with the repair work and needed maintenance that enabled DEC to open these roads in time to accommodate hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts who provide an important economic boost to the Adirondack economies,” said Grannis. “Had it not been for the active engagement of our valuable local partners, we would not have been able to do this.” The roads have reopened strategically in time for the awaited start of big game hunting season, which generates a substantial amount of economic energy in the Adirondack Park. “Big game hunting brings much needed economic activity to Hamilton County during the fall,” said William Farber, chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors. “We appreciate the DEC’s willingness to work with us to re-
open the roads in the Moose River Plains despite the significant reduction in resources.” These reopened roads, along with several others, had been closed throughout the summer due to a lack of resources for DEC to repair, maintain and patrol the roads and nearby recreational facilities. Hamilton County and the towns of Inlet and Indian Lake had partnered with DEC earlier to reopen and maintain roads and nearby recreational facilities in the Moose River Plains Wild Forest including Moose River Plains Road (Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Road), Otter Brook Road up to the Otter Brook Bridge, and Rock Dam Road. “It has been a pleasure to work with DEC to open the roads for the sportsmen and other recreationist,” said Barry Hutchins, Supervisor of the town of Indian Lake.
