Fun Family Halloween Fest slated to return By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — As the leaves begin to fall and the temperature drops, local towns are entertaining with their annual fall festivals. Indian Lake will host its annual Fun Family Halloween Festival Oct. 23, from 3 to 6 p.m. in Byron Park. Activities planned for the afternoon include pony rides, face painting, pumpkin painting and carving, games and crafts, ghost stories, and much more. Music will be provided throughout the day by Adirondack Acoustic, a hometown band that always provides great entertainment. “We encourage all parents to dress their youngster up in costumes and bring them to the costume parade,” said Vonnie Liddle of Indian Lake tourism. “No one will want to forget their cameras.” The parade begins at 2:45 p.m. Featured will be the Pumpkin Platform, which displays pumpkins that have been “decorated” by either carving or painting. Local artists can create pumpkins at the festival or bring their own. Pumpkins can be purchased the week of Oct. 18-22 at the town hall between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for $3 each. “We want to welcome everyone to participate and show off their creations,” said Liddle. “It’s a great opportunity to show off your creative talent. We want to meet a challenge of 100 pumpkins for the platform.” New to the festival this year is the Scarecrow Contest. Scarecrows will be displayed on the front lawn at Byron

Local youth artists honored in ‘Celebration of Life’ By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com GLENS FALLS — Regional middle and high school student are bringing life and color to the streets of Glens Falls as their artistic reactions to the Holocaust are displayed at the World Awareness Children’s Museum’s lobby gallery at Aimie’s Dinner and a Movie at 190 Glen St. The exhibition will run throughout the month of October until 11 p.m. each day. “The exhibition ‘Celebration of Life’ celebrates the message of love and the strength of the human spirit triumphing over the horror

of the Holocaust,” said Russell Serrianne, curator of collections at The World Awareness Children's Museum. Whitney McGinn, Samantha Mitchell and Deidra Palmatier, graduates of Minerva Central School are a few of the features artists in the exhibition. From 2007-2008, students from 18 school districts in Northeastern New York participated in an educational program with Rena Bernstein, a childhood survivor of the Holocaust. Bernstein shared her personal experience and asked students to read her mother Jafa Wallach’s book: Bitter Freedom:

Memoirs of a Holocaust Survivor. Students transferred what they learned into artistic expressions; creating paintings, drawings, ceramics and poetry. This original Holocaust educational project, “A Celebration of Life,” was created and coordinated by Sunny Buchman, and was sponsored by the Glens Falls Hadassah and the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council.
