High Peaks Golf Course raises money for local causes By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — Golfers turned out in numbers to tee-off in memory of Newcomb graduate and avid golfer Robert Dubay at the Memorial Golf Tournament at High Peaks Gold Course, Aug. 14. Dubay was a Newcomb native and avid golfer. He did not live to see the High Peaks Golf course completed, but was dedicated to the sport of golf and exhibiting sportsmanship in all areas of competition. In his honor, the proceeds from the golf tournament are used to award a $500 scholarship to one Newcomb Central School student, who exhibits the same dedication to sportsmanship as Dubay.

DNA testing of remains underway By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com MINERVA — State police investigators have dug up human remains at the former home site of Thomas A. Collard who is accused of murdering his This story was first wife in posted on-line at 3 1980, aup.m., August 12 on thorities www.Denpubs.com said last week. State police are now awaiting results of an autopsy and DNA testing to see if the bones belong to June Collard who's been missing since that year, state police authorities said. An autopsy was being conducted on the remains last week by the Albany Medical Center, and state Police and prosecutors were awaiting the results, state Police Lt. Brent Davison said. "We are awaiting results, and as soon as we get them, we'll be sending portions of the remains to a forensic identification center for DNA analysis," he said. After six full days of digging at the site of the former home of Thomas Collard at 76 Wilson Rd. in Olmstedville, state police investigators unearthed bones the morning of Aug. 10 that were subsequently identified as human remains by an anthropologist, Davison said. State police have not yet revealed the number or type of bones or exactly where they were dug up at the site. While police said that femur bones or teeth would likely yield the best DNA evidence, they declined to say whether they'd unearthed either type of specimen. A source close to the investigation said the bones were located behind where the Collard's trailer once stood. Davison said a minimum of 12 state Police investigators had been

SCHROON LAKE — Schroon Lake will host a daylong festival Labor Day, Sept. 4, and residents are invited to come to town and participate. The day starts with the annual Garage Sale in the Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Senior Citizens Club at the Schroon Lake Town Beach. This is a great opportunity to find treasures. Anyone interested in purchasing a site to sell treasures should call 5327755. At 7 p.m., Main Street (Route 9) shuts down for the seventh Annual Street Dance. Come dance with Bobby Dick & the Sundowners. The event is held in front of Glens Falls National Bank. A rain location is the Town Highway Garage on Hoffman Road near the golf course. This non-alcoholic rocking event runs to 9:30 p.m. Following the dance, the town of Schroon and the Chamber of Commerce invite residents to enjoy fireworks at the town beach. These events are free to the public and are a town of Schroon Lake stop DWI event. Don’t forget the Schroon Lake Association’s fourth annual Duck Race, Sunday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. at Mill Creek near the Bandstand in the Park. Be a winner by adopting a duck for $5. Creek. “We hope people passing through will reconsider speeding past our community on their way to northern destinations,” said Arnheiter. “They showcase the recreational opportunities that we can provide locally.” The funding for this project was made possible due to the towns participation in the Warren County Bed Tax program. The committee submitted a bed tax application in 2009 and received a high rating for signage, banners and holiday lighting. The same committee coordinates the “Lights On” program yearly, including the “Lights On Christmas Parade.” In 1992, the award winning North Creek Action Plan crafted by the community and Saratoga Associates identified the primary gateway to the community as the 28N entrance and proposals for beautification were recommended and never fulfilled. The banner project was an attempt by this group of volunteers to begin to improve that entrance and welcome visitors. The banners did not go unnoticed by locals as they made their habitual
