By John Grybos jgrybos@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — A weekend of field pickin' tunes in a four -day camper town approaches as the Upper Hudson Bluegrass Festival r eturns to the Ski Bowl Park for its eighth year from Aug. 18-21.

Among the performers is David Nichols and Spar e Change, from Whippleville, outside Malone.

“We’re r egionally known and mar ginally famous,” said Nichols.

Nichols r uns a guitar inlay shop that's embellished and built guitars for the likes of B.B. King, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard.

A bluegrass festival is basically a giant campout, said Nichols. Attendees like to sit near their camper and play music while listening to the stage. Having someone to play with at your campsite is as big a draw as the stage performers, said Nichols.

NORTH CREEK — Library visitors can bring their attic and closet tre asures to the Johnsburg bookery Thursday, Aug. 18, for a professional opinion on whether they’ve got hidden gems.

The event is a library fundraiser. Ted Comstock, who was curator at the Adirondack Museum in the ’70s, will look over curious conversation pieces for $5 each, or $12 for 3 items.

Susan Schmidt, library director, said, “This is the thir d year Ted has done this, and he’s got a great response.”

Comstock’s appraisal event draws people to the library that might not stop in otherwise, said Schmidt, and come back later for the library’s offerings.

According to Comstock, that’s exactly why he does these functions.

“I do it as a benefit,” he said. The money char ged for appraisals goes dir ectly to the library.

He approached libraries around the region with his idea to help fundraising, “Libraries deserve it, especially in these electr onic days.” He gr ew up with books and uses libraries often in research for appraisal work.

It’s not gr unt work for him, though. Some of the appeal is that you never know what someone’s going to bring in. “I always learn something,” he said.

In North Elba, someone brought in a 19th century boat, a J.H. Rushton canoe worth from $10,000 to $12,000. Another brought in a manuscript signed by artist Rockwell Kent.

Train ridership on the rise

jgrybos@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — The local train is making a brisk trade in tickets,with nearly 1,800 riders logged since the July 23 opening.

Sarah Munley, dir ector of sales and marketing at Iowa Pacific, said the numbers are meeting and exceeding expectations. A few additional riders pay on board at flag stops, noted Munley , though the number right now is fairly small.

Munley said that reservations are also healthy, with calls daily.

Sterling Goodspeed said that on a r ecent evening, he was dining at Andie's on Main Str eet. When he arrived and sat down, the r estaurant was nearly empty .

Soon, the other tables filled up, and all the new customers were train riders. He said it's busier on Main Street when trains arrive, and the railroaid is having a noticible impact.

Mike Bowers, co-chair of the North Creek Business Alliance, said the electric cars recently donated by the Front Street developers has been getting plenty of use.

“Each and every business went out of

their way to make the passengers welcome to North Creek,” said Bowers, “and it was clearly expressed by many upon leaving that their visit was enjoyable.”

Bowers said the local business community is appreciative of the Saratoga-North Creek Railroad's personnel, and they plan on supporting SNCRR by sending home happy riders to spread good word of mouth.

The Gore Chamber of Commerce has a public meeting planned at the Copperfield Aug. 17 to build strategies to work closely with the new train operators and offer events and destinations to travelers.

Historical marker to be erected JOHNSBURG — The Adirondack Community Trust-Community Fund for the Gor e Mountain Region awar ded $250 to the Historical Society towar ds the pur chase of a permanent hi storical marker honoring the local birthplace of famous Civil War photographer Mathew Brady.

Top county welfare official faces Misconduct, Forgery charges Suspect was a crime-fighter

thom@denpubs.com WA R R E N S B U R G — Wa r r e n County Commissioner of Social Services Sheila M. Weaver was arrested Friday Aug. 5 and char ged with Official MisconSheila M. The arr ests wer e based on incidents r elated to her alleged involvement in obtaining public assistance for two individuals who

had r ecently been living in her household, and another associate, county Sherif f Bud York announced mid-afternoon Aug. 5.

Weaver, 47, lives at 1356 state Rte. 28 in Warrensburg.

County officials said that the arrest came as a shock because W eaver, during her tenur e as Commissioner, had played a key r ole in rooting out fraudulent welfare applications, instituted new standards for employees, and worked to slash costs and consolidate the bureaucracy of the Social Services Department.

The two people who had lived in her household wer e also char ged in the case, police said.

Earlier this week, Belinda M. Redfeather, 51, and Kenneth J. Redbird, 43, both of 425 Glen St. Apt. 85, Glens Falls, were charged in the

It’s a small festival, but we all know each other , said Nichols, “it’s like a family reunion.”

When Nichols stops into the North Cre ek festival, “I know where I’ll park, I know who’ll park behind me.”

It’s like a community, he said, you know wher e you live, you know who your neighbors are, and you’re friendly with most everybody. He added that he avoids people who want to talk his ear off.

He said much like other performers, his band will wander around the campers and play songs, have a sandwich with the owners, move to another camper, or split up to mingle.

Rusty Leigh, who's helped organize the event since it began, called this practice field picking.

The festival wasn't very big the first year, “as a matter of fact it was quite small,” with nine bands playing for thr ee days.

The four-day format launched last year. In previous weekends, the or ganizers found that ther e would be dozens of campers r eady to r oll to their parking places Thursday , though music didn't start until Friday. So they figured, why not get the stage playing a little earlier, said Leigh.

Joel Beaudin, who first thought North Creek could put on a successful blugrass festival and has worked tir elessly to make it so has stepped back fr om his r esponsibilities this year, said Leigh, though he'll help park cars.

The investigation into the activities of the thr ee began in June when the Warren County Sherif f's Office received a report from family members of an elderly woman who had been staying with W eaver. The complainant had voiced concern that the woman might have been taken advantage of.

Investigators then determined

that Redfeather and Redbir d had lived at Weaver's house, but in July had applied to Warren County Social Services for temporary Assistance to help them move into an apartment of their own, police said.

During the application pr ocess, Redfeather and Redbir d failed to accurately r eport their household composition to employees of the county Department of Social Services -- specifically that they lived with the Commissioner , police said.

The investigation also r evealed that an associate of W eaver's had applied for public assistance health benefits in January and had re-certified in June. But an investigation r evealed that W eaver allegedly changed the household expense figure that the applicant had

We like to make a little money , said Leigh, because we give it all away. The not-for-profit show only retains enough money to r un the next year , and the r est is donated to community or ganizations, schools, the Outreach Center and the North Country Ministry, which helps with home heating.

Leigh hires the bands, attending other festivals and approaching bands that seem like a good fit; he's already started looking for next year's bands.

Leigh said all the music's good, but they have a few bands that ar e especially noteworthy . The James King Band has been r ecognized several times by the International Bluegrass Association.

Leigh's also excited about Goldwing Expr ess of Missouri and Remington Ryde of Pennsylvania.

“I'm very fussy about the people I hire to play,” said Leigh.

Though he likes to stick to a traditional bluegrass format, Leigh's open to suggestion. A survey is distributed to attendees so they can suggest a band to bring to the festival, and he'll hir e on bands he personally isn't too keen on if ther e's enough audience interest.

County chief responds Monday Aug. 8, Warren County Administrator Paul Dusek said that Weaver was on paid administrative leave until the status of the charges wer e r esolved. The position pays $79,184 annually.

Farmers markets a worthwhile stop

I

f you know the person who produced your food on a first-name basis, you’re living the dream.

It’s National Farmers Market Week (Aug. 7-13), a time when the USDA secretary and the Farmers Market Coalition tout the political, economic and social benefits of farmers markets in the U.S. Let them say their piece; we’d rather just eat — maybe a little wood-fired bread from Wadhams smeared with goat’s milk cheese from Au Sable Forks, all washed down with a fruit wine made in Mooers.

From Warrensburg to Wilmington and Plattsburgh to Port Henry, we’re blessed with a variety of local food producers in the Adirondack region, much of it made in the Champlain Valley to the east and the St. Lawrence Valley in the northwest.

For many, a visit to the local farmers market is treated as a quick, weekly chore. In places where the myriad of 10by-10 tents are set up in fields and parking lots and along riverbanks, there’s usually a beehive of activity — locals and visitors looking for good deals, good eats and good company.

But in places like Saranac Lake, where the farmers market is located in the heart of the village at Riverside Park, the traveling band of agrarian gypsies becomes the center of the community activity for five hours every Saturday.

Spend the day, and you’ll see what we mean.

Two weeks ago, we did just that, and we were amazed at what we saw. It was Can-Am Rugby weekend. The village was packed with tourists, cars whizzing by the park on River Street. In the bubble of the farmers market, the traffic was a stone’s throw away, but there was no noise.

With the tents set up in an oval — the band shell at one end and a pair of towering white pine trees at the other — a picnic table in the center, surrounded by

green grass, was the center of town.

Heck, at the time, it was the center of the universe.

As vendors finished setting up, they were the first to make their rounds and buy some fresh produce, cheese and baked goods for breakfast. Then, over the next five hours, it seemed as though most of the community showed up.

A woman sitting in the band shell played folk and blues tunes, laying the perfect soundtrack for a day at the market.

Locals came by for a croissant and a conversation. The newspaper publisher stopped for fresh vegetables while taking her puppy for a walk. A mortgage broker ran across the grass after buying a dozen eggs. Teenagers cradled bunches of flowers in their arms. Artists, musicians, retirees, state workers, not-forprofit employees, small business owners, people from all walks of life were there, as were tourists, seasonal residents and boaters docking at Lake Flower behind the tents.

This was a snapshot of the community at its finest. Flowers, cheese, produce and baked goods seemed to sell the best.

We guarantee this: The farmers market will make you smile. Grab a fresh sunflower. Eat a cheese and apple danish.

Stick a moose-shaped maple sugar lollipop in your mouth. Stop by a market in your community this week, and you’ll see what we mean.

Programs winning the war on knotweed INLET — The Town of Inlet's Regional Inlet Invasive Plant Program in has tr eated tens of thousands of Japanese knotweed plants with herbicide fr om its forming in 2008 through 2010. These invasive plants were found at more than 100 sites in Blue Mountain Lake, Indian Lake, Inlet and Webb.

This year, the pr ogram will continue efforts in those towns and also identify and tr eat sites in Lake Placid, Long Lake, North Cr eek, North River, and Saranac Lake. Other knotweed contr ol ef forts this summer include the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Pr ogram on state property, and Hamilton County Water and Soil Conservation District around Speculator.

Japanese knotweed forms dense thickets of thick bamboo-like hollow stems, with mature heights over 10 feet and an extensive network of underground r oots. The leaves ar e somewhat heart-shaped with white lacy flowery clusters that form in August. Cutting knotweed after June 1 is not r ecommended. Ther e must be enough growth to allow effective herbicide application. Digging the plant's r oots is not r ecom-

mended; tiny r oot fragments can start new plants. Pr oper tr eatment with an herbicide, glyphosate, is very ef fective. T reatment of sites near rivers and streams is important to prevent downstream spread.

Knotweed has been eradicated at many sites, and should be eradicated at many others in the next few years. The community has pitched in, with volunteers identifying sites and obtaining pr operty owner permissions. The PHA Conference was held at Camp Triumph this past weekend. Next year the Conference will be the last week of June.

Fred Allen and friend Jack spent several days in the area, and despite the heat were able to get some work done on the Mission House in Warrensburg.

The Dalaba Reunion was on Saturday at Camp Triumph. Some family from Michigan, Comstock and Granville, Vermont, Johnsburg, Bakers Mills, Albany, North Creek, Schroon Lake. Everyone had a great time sharing and seeing one another. Uncle Oliver Dalaba and Keitan Millington walked to the lean-tos and to the Big Rock (Dunlops Rock).

Oliver Dalaba preached at Sodom Community Church Sunday Morning. Went on to Massachusetts to see Ginny's family.

There was a great celebration at the Inn On Gore Saturday for George Studnicky's 80th birthday. George was happy to see so many family and friends.

To the News Enterprise: Perhaps if the beach had been named Veteran's Memorial Beach rather than Grunblatt Memorial Beach the three Town Board members, who blithely appr oved permanent closur e of the only viable public swimming place in Johnsbur g, might have been mor e thoughtful. For a second time in as many months councilors Arsenault and Mor ehouse took a more reasoned approach to the beach problem in their support for a sanitary survey to be completed which would clearly identify specific problems and recommend an abatement plan based on water testing, research and facts.

How will, I ask again, the historians write of the 201 1 Town Board members who committed this commemorative r ecreational asset (even if tr oubled) to an ignominious end

Town of Newcomb website receives overhaul

Minke is fairly new to website creation, though she’s an old hat at design. She was a graphic artist for 23 years with the U.S. Navy, and 8 years with the Coast Guard.

She grew up in Long Lake, and retired to Newcomb about four years ago.

Her biggest concern with the site is slimming it down, she said. Her redesign has focused on consolidating information that was spread around several pages, so ther e aren’t quite as many mouse-clicks navigating around, she said.

andy@denpubs.com BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Museum Aug. 4 honored Jerry Jenkins for his many contributions to the Adirondack Park — as a botanist, naturalist, geographer and author — by awar ding him the annual Harold K. Hochschild Award.

Since 1990, the awar d — named after the museum’s founder — has been reserved for community leaders who advance the r egion’s cultur e and quality of life. A host of guest speakers at the award ceremony testified how Jenkins fits this or le and why he deserves the award.

“What Jerry has accomplished was to put the Adirondacks on the global map,” said Timothy Barnett, vice pr esident of the Adirondack Nature Conservancy.

Jenkins is an ecologist with the W ildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Adirondack Program, based in Saranac Lake. He has almost 40 years of field experience working in the Northern For est, including mountain landscapes in New York, V ermont and Maine.

A bear named sunscreen

W

hen I was a kid — way before the World Wrestling Foundation, E.T. or even Star Wars — the Saturday evening entertainment wasn’t a night out at the movies, it was watching black bears gorge themselves on table scraps at the Newcomb dump.

Back before it became politically incorrect to heave your bags of trash into the big crater in the earth, dumps in locales like Newcomb, Long Lake and Tupper Lake were legendary for nightly visits from bruins who became supersized on discarded leftovers.

We’d kick back in ratty lawn chairs and watch them for hours as house flies buzzed around their tiny clamshell ears. We’d give them names like Bone Crusher, Pizza Face and Budweiser.

Oh how we’d chuckle.

Locals would recognize them year after year and would speak about them over morning coffee.

They’d say things like, “Pizza Face looks like he’s a muffin over 600 pounds this year.” And, “I nearly smacked Budweiser this morning with my pickup.”

Even more fun was watching the visiting flatlanders who — forgetting the fact that Budweiser, Pizza Face and Bone Crusher were wild creatures capable of swatting them off the planet like a black fly — would attempt to feed them by hand or get close enough to add one to the background of a family portrait.
