That’s according to Minerva Supervisor Sue Montgomery Corey.

“It’s important because a lot of our families depend on the pr ogram and have for many years,” Montgomery Corey said.

There’s a possibility Comlinks’ Gleaning program might be able to continue providing food to Minerva, but the town would have to pick it up in Malone. Montgomery Corey was unsure if the town would take advantage of this, because of the traveling time involved.

The Minerva food pantry purchases items in Glens Falls that havebeen dropped off by the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, according to Frances Paradis, head of the Minerva food pantry . This r equired a h alf d ay o f t ravel for a park employee.

Electric car with six-person capacity donated to North Creek organizations Will be used to taxi tourists from the train depot and increase mobility at Nursing and Rehabilitation Center NORTH CREEK — The Fr ontStreet developers donated an electric car to the North Cr eek Business Alliance and the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

FrontStreet Mountain Development announced the intr oduction of its electric cars to North Creek. The cars will be in and near the village of North Cr eek, the Ski Bowl Park and the FrontStreet Ski Bowl V illage at Gor e Mountain project.

Mac Crikelair, FrontStreet project manager , said, “We are very pleased to intr oduce electric vehicles to North Cr eek as part of our ef fort to enhance the environment in the Adirondacks and the community of North Cr eek. North Cr eek is uniquely situated on the Hudson River in the central Adirondacks and we are delighted to contribute to the community ef fort to maintain the pristine environment, while contributing to the economic development of the area.”

The electric car will be used by the Business Alliance to support community events in North Creek. The Alliance is focused on the development of North Creek as a tourist destination. The group pr eviously intr oduced a fr ee community shuttle during the ski season and during major events in town.

The Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will use the electric car to transport its residents to North Creek and the Ski Bowl Park.

The electric car will be used to support the many community events held in North Cr eek, the Ski Bowl Park, the business district along Main Str eet, the train station and The Hudson River riverfront pavilions. The new Saratoga and North Cr eek Railway train began service to North Creek this month.

The electric car will also be used to transport event coordinators, Chamber of Commerc e, busi-

ness partners and guests.

The r esidents of the T riCounty Nursing Home will utilize the vehicle to shop, eat at local r estaurants and attend the special events held in and around the village and the Ski Bowl Park.

The recently-completed, handicap-accessible entryway to the library features a log table and seating, a garden, rock retaining wall and a hand-painted mural by Frances Gaffney, including the quote pictured above.

The r ed-eyed vir eo is one of her favorites, “I can hear that every morning when I’m having my cof fee,” said Gaffney. She’ll also paint indigo buntings, some sparrows and meadowlarks.

“I’m really glad to be able to do something for North Creek,” said Gaf fney. She’s felt especially gratified that people have made special visits to the library to see her mural grow.

She’s been visiting North Creek for 30 years, and first came to the ar ea to see her brother at school in Paul Smith’s. “I went to visit him and just fell in love with the Adirondacks.”

She’s brought her children up her e since they wer e in diapers. Her son went to Wanakena ranger school and her daughter works in Southwest Conservation Corps. She cr edits the Adirondacks with instilling

“I happened to be visiting the library and Susan [Schmidt] asked me if I’d be interested in doing some art,” said Gaffney.

Library visitors often r ecognize the view fr om near 13th Lake that looks east over the high peaks. The mural is based on a recent landscape sketch which just sold, she said.

She’s about halfway done, and has reached the fun part, she said, where she will add colorful flourishes to the mural. She’s usually a watercolorist, but is painting the mural with latex wall paint.

She plans to paint in cathedral pines, bluets, daylilies, sneezeweed and hollyhocks to r epresent the plant kingdom.

Gaffney will be the artist in r esidence at the Adirondack Museum from Aug. 4 to Aug. 8, wher e she will demonstrate the cr eation of her work and interact with the public. She’ll also have a show at the Tannery Pond Community Center this January.

After a ten-year stand-down, I am once again a candidate for councilor on the Johnsburg Town Board. I am dedicating my candidacy for town council as a referendum on what to do with the Waddell buildings located along the river’s edge near the train station in North Creek.

Last fall the Town of Johnsburg accepted ownership of these buildings from Warren County which had received them from the Open Space Institute. This gift includes three buildings two which remain unimproved, and one which has undergone minor interior improvements and new roofing.

In my opinion, the taxpayers were hoodwinked into taking these buildings off Warren County’s hands. The councilors sat by while the Supervisor made bold warnings regarding possible future uses or future ownership of the site that might not be acceptable to town residents if the town didn’t control the site. The strategy worked. Convinced by this specious argument, the board failed to recognize that The Open Space Institute, after paying huge money to protect that stretch of riparian land, would not have allowed development that degraded the river front. With no secure source of funding in perpetuity that would protect the Johnsburg taxpayers against devastating losses for the rehabilitation, maintenance, and operating costs of those buildings, the councilors allowed the Supervisor to sign the deed, thereby loading those costs on our backs. In addition, there seems to be no clear purpose or planned function for the buildings. In other words, the town has acquired old buildings with little or no historic value which have no sustainable use. This sounds to me like a recipe for a spending black hole.

I propose to remove the buildings--demolished or recycled away from the site. This would allow the area to be developed as a river front park that will make the whole area from North Creek to Sullivan’s Island a showcase for the town. No buildings to paint or heat, no roofs to fix or toilets to unplug--just some grass to mow, benches to sit upon, places to walk, birds to watch.

More details in my next piece--stay tuned and think. By the way, I suggest the river front be named “River Drive Park”.

APA at a crossroads C

hairman Curt Stiles’ decision to step down from his throne at the Adirondack Park Agency next month could be like cutting the head of f the proverbial snake.

From our perspective, the ex-Marine turned Adirondack Council leader then APA chair has done little to bridge the deep divide that exists over how the agency enforces environmental standards here.

You’d have to go back to the late 1980s to find mor e malcontent with the APA than exists today. At that time, a commission appointed by then Gov . Mario Cuomo was proposing even harsher land use restrictions, but Cuomo eventually gave in to the will of the people.

Now, another Cuomo has the same opportunity with the soon-to-be-vacant chairmanship.

The question is, will the devil we get be worse than the devil we got?

Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board Chairman Fred Monroe has his reservations. Often an outspoken critic of Stiles during his four -year tenur e, Monroe now says Stiles spent the last several months working with the Review Board to change some of the Agency’s iron-fisted procedures, like how it doles out exorbitant fines, even in cases involving a relatively minor violation; or how it fines those who voluntarily step forward or those who inherit pr e-existing pr oblems.

Stiles, to his credit, worked with the Review Boar d to draft new civil penalty guidelines that wer e adopted in April, Monroe pointed out.

More r ecently, M onroe s aid h is b oard was in talks with Stiles to alter the Agency’s procedures so the economic impact of a pr oject is taken into consideration during the appr oval pr ocess. Currently, Agency staf f is only concerned with envir onmental factors, essentially ignoring the human equ ation of how a project might better the standard of living here.

Those talks will most likely stall when Stiles leaves on Aug. 12, Monroe fears.

Monroe also pointed out that Stiles is at least an Adirondack Park r esident — the governor is not bound to appoint the same to the seat.

In fact, past chairs have been year -

round residents from as far away as New York City — people chosen more for their political connections then their intere st in the region.

While we ar e well awar e that politics plays a part in these decisions, we believe the APA is at an important cr ossroads, and the governor could go a long way toward healing the mistrust by choosing the right individual for this position.

First and for emost, Cuomo needs to clear the Agency of special inter est groups. Just as a former leader of a pr oindustry lobby gr oup would most likely not be the best choice for APA chairman, neither is a former executive dir ector of an environmental group.

The point made last fall by the Review Board that theAPA Board of Commissioners is “stacked with leaders of envir onmental advocacy groups” is a valid one.

Adirondack people ar e not stupid. W e see this infiltration as a systematic move to force a one-sided vision of land use in the Adirondacks, and the Agency’s interpretation of the APA Act under Stiles has been reflective of that.

Until that changes, there will be no balance on the boar d and the Agency will continue to be viewed as biased and self serving.

At the same time, the Agency — especially the chairman — needs to be accessible to the public. Disclosur e and open media communication is key , something Stiles is not noted for.

Love him or hate him, these ar e precisely the points Essex farm owner and former Wall Str eet executive Sandy Lewis has made all along, that the Agency is needed, just not thisAgency with Stiles as the lone-star general.

Had the state listened to Lewis, the Review Boar d, and the will of the Adirondack people, the APA would no doubt be a mor e ef fective agency for the envir onment and the people who live here.

Summer is sizzling! If you are on vacation, it is a good thing, but if you have to work in it... no fun!

Because of the heat, there are many blooms that are coming early. I have Phlox already in full bloom ,and the er st will be blooming soon. They ar e very showy , as ar e the hollyhocks. Jan Palmer in North River has some beautiful hollyhocks. Her gardens are always so beautiful and right next to the road so that we all can enjoy the view.

Youth Works helped us out every week that they have been here. On Thursday, they came to help and I decided that the garden was looking good, so we tackled the over grown areas near the town building. It was a scor ching hot day and they worked from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It was wonderful to have them, and we finished weeding and laying landscape cloth, donated by Rudd at Murphy’s Lumber. T HANKS R UDD! D an H itchcock ag reed t o h ave some wood chips deliver ed to cover the ar ea, and the kids spread them over the cloth. It took three truck loads. It really cleaned up that parking lot, and Matt Olden trimmed the rest of the ar ea. It looked good for the Music festival event that was last weekend.

We ar e not done. They will be back on Monday to finish the weeding and mulching ar ound the building and in the shrubs and taking a break to help out with the book sale. We are so lucky to have this resource.

These young people go home after Aug. 5. What a blessing they have been to our ar ea. They have helped people in need all over the Adirondack region. They have as many as 70 young people come every week to do God’s good work.

They have a mission to help where help is needed. They have been working at our gar den, visiting the Nursing Homes, playing with kids at Kids Club and helping folks that are in need of painting, cleaning, yard work and simple construction jobs. They ar e cheerful and fun to be with. I will miss them!

We are building a new gar den area. If there is a gar dener that would like to join the Ski Bowl Gar den Volunteers, let me know because there will be a brand new gard en to adopt.

Starting a gar den is like being an artist with a clean slate!

Come join the fun. Our garden is a wonderful place to be.

Letters to the Editor To the News Enterprise: I recently read Andy Flynn’s editorial in the June 25 issue of the News Enterprise. It is great reading an article that is based solely on conjectur e and hearsay . It should be placed on the top ten reading list, just above Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

First of all, it is not illegal to post signs on power poles. If that were the case, those who have lost a pet or are advertising a yar d sale would be in violation. If those signs wer e illegal, why didn’t Richards remove them in the past years?

The JCS-CBC was not founded for the purpose of tearing down the school board or any individual. It’s goal is to pro vide a quality education at an affordable cost. We are in a financially depressed area in a time of economic depr ession. Money is not as readily available as it was in the past.

If offering advice to the school board is considered taking political pot shots, then I say, “Bang! Bang!”.

June 2011 was a typical early summer month with near normal temperatures and precipitation slightly below normal. This brings our string of months with much above normal rainfall to an end.

The average high temperature was 75.3 and the average low was 54.9, giving us an average of 65 degrees, only 0.1 degree less than normal. The highest temperature, 91 degrees was recorded on the 8th. The lowest temperature, 42 degrees, was recorded on the 4th. There was only one day greater than 90 degrees compared to an average of nearly two.

There were 129 heating degree days, bringing our seasonal total to 8142.5 and the of ficial end to the heating season. This total is 243.5 degree days above normal a nd i ndicates a c older t han n ormal w inter and mor e money or labor spent on fuel to keep a home warm. This total, 243.5 degr ee days, would represent about five more cold winter days when the average temperature would be around 10 degrees.

Rainfall for the month was 3.84 inches, 0.34 inches below normal. Our seasonal total is now 29.96 inches, 9.59 inches above the normal amount of 20.37. There were 14 days with measurable pr ecipitation with the gr eatest amount, 1.38 inches, falling on the 22nd.

The river reached its highest level, 6.13 feet, on the 1st and its lowest level, 3.89 feet, on the 22nd.

To date, over 500 animals company-wide have found new for ever homes, with even more adoptions still pending.

the V eterinarians and other pet service providers in attendance, and that will make our rescues healthier. We give a “paws-up” to the ef forts made by the Curtis Lumber team to impr ove quality of life in our New York State and Vermont communities.”

Newcomb gearing up for 46th annual steak roast, parade NEWCOMB — Hundreds will converge on this smallAdirondack town this Saturday, July 30, for the 46th annual steak or ast and parade to benefit the Newcomb V olunteer Fire Department.

The day kicks off with a parade at noon, featuring participants from local organizations, the youth program, and regional fire companies and emergency services. The line-up is set at 11 a.m., beginning at the Goodnow Flow Road.

Immediately following the parade, people can head to the Newcomb town beach on Lake Harris to participate in the popular steak r oast, said Fir e Chief Mark Yandon. Tickets are $15 each, and entitle diners to steak, a baked potato, coleslaw and

corn on the cob, along with a soda. Last year, 700 dinners were served.

If they sell out of steak tickets, there will still be corn-on-thecob, hot dogs and hamburgers, said Fire Department Treasurer Wester Miga.

Alcoholic beverages will not be sold, though people are allowed to bring their own. No glass bottles ar e allowed on the beach.

The steak roast benefits the Newcomb Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Along with providing fire protection, the squad maintains a full-time paid EMS service. Pr oceeds

raised help offset the cost, and also help supply equipment. The squad has plans to purchase new pagers for the new E-911 system being installed in Essex County, and is considering replacing its 12-year-old ambulance.

Yandon stated volunteers were welcome and needed.

"If we didn't have volunteers that weren't members of the fire department, we couldn't do it. W e get tremendous support from the community. Anyone who wants to volunteer an hour or two of their time should call," said Yandon.

Preview party to feature huge book sale, artists LONG LAKE — The Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Library’s Preview Party Book Sale is Thursday , Aug. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Long Lake Central School.

The evening features a huge used book selection, local musicians, r efreshments and a silent auction.

Admission is $10 per person.

Babbie LeBlanc Performing will be the Fat River Kings with Long Lake’s Jason Hall, with original songs on keyboard and joined by FRK bandmates, Steve Signell and Brian Beaudin for a couple of popular a cappella sea shanties.

Babbie LeBlanc, also from Long Lake will entertain us with a delightful sampling of her vocal/guitar arrangements.

Shop the book selection and enjoy the evening with us at this benefit for the Long Lake Library. There is plenty of parking in the school parking lot and the building is handicap accessible.

The book sale continues Friday , Aug. 12, and Saturday, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“It’s a bigger commitment to get up there,” Montgomery Corey said, speaking of Malone.

The Minerva town board has talked about partnering with other food pantries in the region to share the drive to Malone, the supervisor said. It has not discussed whether it would take advantage of the pick-up in Malone if no partnerships can be made.

No longer receiving items from Comlinks would be a loss to the Minerva food pantry , according to Paradis.

“It definitely will be a decre ase in what we can offer the clients,” Paradis said, adding that many of the pantry’s healthy items, such as fr esh produce, come from the Gleaning program.

The number of clients the pantry serves has tripled since Paradis helped start it in the early 1990s, Paradis said.

Brian Cassini of ComLinks said July 18 that his agency had been allocated $343,000 by the state for Gleaning during 2010-11, but he’d been notified that only $150,000 was coming from the state for the program in 2011-12.

Through Gleaning, ComLinks dispatched tr ucks to 63 distribution points thr oughout a seven-county region. June 30, the agency sent a letter out to most all of these entities revealing the bad news. Most of the communities, including Minerva, had deliveries twice a month.

Prior to the cuts, food was deliver ed to various town halls, food pantries, charities and other emergency food distribution organizations to be doled out to a total of 75,000 people in the North Country.

Among the communities served by Gleaning wer e Warrensburg, Chester , Lake George, Thurman, Horicon, Hague, Glens Falls and Johnsburg in Warren County, and Schroon Lake, Minerva, Elizabethtown, Lake Placid, Keeseville and North Hudson in Essex County.

The more remote municipalities with the lowest population were the first to get cut from ComLinks’ distribution route. The distribution agencies that have the most limited alternative sources for low- or no-cost food — like Elizabethtown, North Hudson Thurman and Hague — would be the first to be reinstated if state funding is restored, Cassini said.
