jgrybos@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — The developer of the Front Street project has reached a sticking point with the town board over bonding for the project’s wastewater treatment facility.

At issue is whether the developer ’s estimate of $46,000 in bonds will cover the capital needed for installing and operating the wastewater system serving the townhouses and hotels planned for the development.

The town’s estimate came in more than five times higher at $258,000.

Front Street Developer David Crikelair told town board members during a July 19 meeting their number is inflated.

“This is the first time we’ve heard these numbers,” Crikelair said. “That’s relatively unfair, and requires a clear and crisp dialogue” among the developer, the engineer and town attorney.

If the developers default on the property, the town would take over management of the sewage system, and the bonds would cover five rolling years of

John Groll, known as Jack, was nominated for the title in a letter to the town board by his fellow firefighters at Indian Lake Fire District #2.

Groll takes the fire truck to parades for Memorial Day, fireman’s field day and other county events. He also does a fire house and truck tour for the art center ’s pre-

school and has hats and coloring books for the kids.

Groll has served as the district fire chief since 2006, and was the assistant chief before that. The letter described Groll as “the most knowledgeable when it comes to the fire and emergency equipment and vehicles.”

He’ll be one of the younger staffers of the Hudson Headwaters Healthcare Network, and said, “I can’t wait to start learning from the old pros.”

He said he always liked the sciences in public school, and enjoys helping people. An interest in medicine grew organically from that.

Practicing in a rural area will give him a chance to use his broad medical knowledge, and give him access to the region’s outdoor recreation.

He earned his undergraduate degree in natural science and biology at the University of Western Ontario. He attended medical school at Saint George’s University on the island of Grenada in the West Indies. He went on to do two years of clinicals in New York, and just finished his residency in internal medicine at Albany Medical Center.

He chose internal medicine because “it’s a little bit of everything.” Instead of specializing, which he said might have been boring for him, internal medicine offered a rounded education with lots of disease pathology and a variety of patient problems.

Sooriabalan was born in Sri Lanka, an island south of India. His family left when he was 2, moving to Southampton, England, where he lived until he was 7.

He’s been skiing, snowshoeing and kayaking, and even went on his first camping trip recently. He said he can’t wait to live and work around the mountains so he can start enjoying the outdoors.

Artists to gather for ‘Rhythm & Rhymes at the Hudson’ NORTH CREEK — The Hudson River Trading Company will host its second “Rhythm & Rhymes at the Hudson: A Celebration of Authors & Artists” Saturday, Aug. 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the store’s location on Main Street.

Transfer station to stay open jgrybos@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — The transfer station’s status is under review, but it’s not closing, said Sterling Goodspeed, town supervisor.

“Any rumors are just completely unfounded,” said Goodspeed. “It’s taken on a life of its own. There’s never been a discussion on closing the transfer station.”

Though the crusher for compacting garbage and an on-site shed for shelter were destroyed by lightning strikes and a resulting fire, the town has every intention of keeping services available there, said

Goodspeed.

The board did ask the town’s lawyer to review the closing of the landfill. This wasn’t to review closing procedures, said Goodspeed, but research so they will know what services are required before finalizing plans on the station.

Since the storm, the station has hauled trash at an accelerated pace. Without the ability to compact trash, the town must haul every two days at a cost of $186 per haul, rather than the 10-day cycle they’re accustomed to, said Cherie Ferguson, town secretary.

This increased cost should be covered by the town’s insurance, but so far the funds

aren’t flowing. The town is working with the insurance carrier to figure out how much coverage they have, and engineers are reviewing the station while the town puts out bids on replacing the heavy equipment.

Employees at the station are currently without phones or electricity, but do have radios and portable toilets, though, “It’s certainly not ideal,” said Ferguson.

Town officials mull beach options Facebook survey: People tired of Band-Aid fixes

jgrybos@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — After reviewing cost estimates for keeping the town beach open, the Johnsburg town board was without consensus by the end of its July 19 meeting.

The cheapest option presented by engineer Kathy Suozzo was a transition from swimming hole to park, which would cost about $3,500.

The beach has had trouble staying open later than the beginning of August in past years, said Town Supervisor Sterling Goodspeed. The water routinely fails a clarity check around that time, resulting in immediate closure.

If lifeguards can’t see deeply enough into the water, they might not be able to see a drowning swimmer. This safety risk is what closes the beach, said Goodspeed.

Keeping the water clean and clear could mean installing a drain to change out the water, which would cost about $25,000. If the water is cloudy because there’s too little oxygen, then an aerator could be installed, with a total cost of $44,000.

A well could be installed to keep the water fresh, costing about $38,000, or a new dam and inlet pipes, for about $68,500.

Kathy Suozzo emphasized that the numbers are a potential cost only, and could be higher and lower than their estimates.

Town Secretary Cherie Ferguson conducted a Facebook survey on behalf of the town.

The feedback indicated that people are “tired of putting money into it hand over fist and coming out with nothing.”

The biggest assumption is that we’ll be able to do these things, said Suozzo. Any changes could involve the Army Corps of Engineers, the Adirondack Park Agency and other regulatory agencies.

Board member Gene Arsenault asked what would happen to the condition of the pond without remediation. Suozzo said that it would eventually fill in and become a bog.

Arsenault also asked about breaching the berm that forms the pond. Goodspeed deferred to Jim Jones, a contractor who works for the town and was involved with the berm installation. Jones said it could be taken out, but would be expensive, and a great deal of material would need to be removed.

Goodspeed noted that the berm was constructed with state or federal funds, and that might present an extra hurdle to jump if they wanted to take out the berm.

Ideas for moving the swimming hole included the Kellogg-Waddell property the town recently acquired from the Open Space Institute, a Hudson swimming area or Sullivan’s Island, which the town plans to acquire from the OSI. The idea of a pool was not well-received

by Goodspeed. He said that the town might be able to get the pool installed, but maintenance costs might bankrupt a town the size of Johnsburg.

Board member Arnold Stevens said he couldn’t see a way to close this discussion and make a decision. The board could have another discussion just like this at the next meeting, and on and on. “We have to be able to say this horse is dead, it’s time to dismount, or decide to move ahead.”

Peter Olesheski, who chairs the Ski Bow Park Committee, said in his discussions around town, he and others have swayed toward closing the beach. “People want to see a resolution, I want to see a resolution one way or the other.”

Kids geocaching trip planned

NORTH CREEK — The Adirondack TREKS Geocache trip will take place Wednesday, August 3. It will begin at the Ski Bowl pavilion at 1 p.m., when teams are formed. Each team will solve a puzzle which contains a clue for finding their geocache.

They will also be able to use a map and GPS, which are provided. Geocaches are usually boxes which are hidden in the woods and contain little prizes, which can be exchanged for something which the trekker brought. The geocaches will be found along the first two miles of the Schaefer Trail, which connects the Ski Bowl with the summit of Gore Mountain.

Wilderness First Aide course offered NORTH CREEK — There will be a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course in North Creek Friday, Aug. 5. Participants will meet at Tannery Pond Community Center at 9 a.m. and will end by 4 p.m. The morning will consist of backcountry first aid discussion and indoor practice, followed by a short hike in the afternoon to practice and apply what was learned.

Students will receive a WFA card for completion of the course, which is recognized by DEC as fulfilling the first aid requirement for guides.

New scenic train service begins Saturday NORTH CREEK — The debut trips of the Saratoga-North Creek Railway are expected to occur Saturday, July 23, after being rescheduled from last week.

This long-awaited train service includes three round-trips per day, two from North Creek to the Saratoga Springs rail station and one from North Creek to Hadley.

This railway, operated on tracks owned primarily by Warren County, links Warren County to Saratoga County via rail for the first time since 1956.

The new passenger train service includes domed cars for panoramic scenic vistas, ski train trips, dining excursions and themed jaunts. The railway is operated for the county by Iowa Pacific Holdings, which runs railroads elsewhere in the U.S. and in England.

Iowa Pacific officials said the one-week delay occurred primarily because of wireless communications between the trains and a base station needed to be upgraded. Also, some minor track repairs needed to be accomplished, they said.

Initially, the railway will be offering trips Thursday through Monday, originating in North Creek and running through Johnsburg, Chester, Thurman, Warrensburg, Stony Creek, Hadley and Corinth on its way to Saratoga. Along its roundtrip routes, the trains are scheduled to stop in Riparius, The Glen, Glen-Hudson Campground, Thurman Station, Thousand Acres of Stony Creek, the Hadley station, the Corinth station, then the grand station in Saratoga Springs.

Railway General Manager Steve Torrico of North Creek said Iowa Pacific was committed to not only making scenic and dining excursions, and ski train trips as enjoyable as possible, but to resurrect the role that trains played 80 or more years ago, when they linked up local communities, and provided vital local passenger service.

Torrico said the railroad would be likely be making im-

promptu stops if necessary, and perhaps even barter short train rides for fresh homegrown eggs or produce from a local citizen’s garden if necessary.

“It’s exciting not only to have this line to provide a new gateway to the Adirondacks, but to connect the local communities with a viable, economical method of transportation,” Torrico said. “We’ll be like a slice of small-town America when we approach a stop and a passenger flags us down and we stop and pick them up — We’re going to be the neighborhood railroad.”

Mixed feelings on Crown Changes welcome at APA Point assessor decision I

T

he Crown Point Town Board is switching from three elected assessors to a sole appointed assessor. Their July 14 decision was bold, as it is unpopular with many residents. It is wise, as it will save taxpayers more than $18,000 a year. And it is the tipping point of what could become a trend in Essex County if other towns follow their lead.

As it stands now, nine of the 18 towns in Essex County have sole assessors, all appointed by their town boards. Crown Point will be number 10 at the end of 2011. Looking at how towns in neighboring counties handle their assessing needs, we’re left to wonder why many Essex County towns are so slow in making the switch from a threemember board of assessors to a sole assessor.

After all, Crown Point is merely following a statewide trend of moving to a sole assessor; the state Office of Real Property Tax Services reported that 88 percent of towns in New York in 2010 had sole appointed assessors, up from 48 percent in 1983. The trend is also clear in the North Country.

In Warren County, all but two of the 11 towns (Stony Creek and Thurman) have a sole assessor. The town of Johnsburg switched in 2000, and the town of Bolton did so in 1991, both by a vote from the town boards. In a 1990 referendum, residents in the town of Hague voted to change to a sole assessor system.

In Clinton County, all but two of the 14 towns (Beekmantown and Ellenburg) have a sole assessor.

In Franklin County, all but one of the 19 towns (Constable) have a sole assessor.

And in Hamilton County, all nine towns have a sole assessor (two are elected and the rest are appointed).

In the North Country, there are clearly more sole assessors than three-member boards of assessors, and we think more towns should make the switch, especially in Essex County.

In today's economic climate, it’s imperative that government bodies, such as town boards, reduce tax burdens for their residents as much as possible. If they can do

that by achieving the same end result — an accurate assessment roll in this case — with one person rather than three, they should do so. Cut the pork. Streamline the process.

Make it less cumbersome.

The Crown Point Town Board members who voted for the change cited financial reasons for their decision. They wanted to save money. And while $18,000 doesn't go as far as it used to, every little bit helps.

Given the backlash in Crown Point from an overwhelming number of residents opposing a sole assessor system, there could have been a better way to make this decision. Instead of Town Board members creating a local law themselves, effective Dec. 31, it would have been nice for them to let the voters decide in a fall referendum. It’s true, voters put Town Board members in office to make tough decisions; however, taking away the voters’ choice to decide their own assessor system, especially when it is this controversial, was a mistake.

Yet simply addressing the assessor issue, no matter how the change was made, may have been political suicide for some board members.

After the July 14 vote, two Crown Point assessors — Stephen Mackay and Chairman Carl Ross — voiced their intent to get rid of the three Town Board members who voted for the sole assessor system — Supervisor Bethany Kosmider and council members Bob Patnode and Yvonne Dushane. Kosmider and Dushane are up for re-election this fall. Mackay said, “They are going down.” Ross vowed, “These people are not going to be re-elected.” It should make for an exciting election season.

It’s these possible repercussions from the Crown Point electorate that make the Town Board’s decision a courageous one. We’re just not sure the board had to be that courageous.

he Kelly Miller Circus came to town again this year. We’ve seen the show for about eight years in a row, and I think this year ’s was the best ever.

Oh, it had the requisite tiger, elephant, camel, and dog and pony shows, but this year the circus had a Western theme and the accompanying music was very listenable.

I thought about the thrill of the circus — the thing that brings me back year after year — folks performing acrobatics, juggling, riding elephants. I wondered about their life style. Going from town to town overnight and waking up each morning in a new place, doing two shows a day must get old after awhile.

But for those of us in the audience it is magical! We sit enthralled at the feats of derring-do and, speaking for myself, although I admire those lithe bodies that can climb to the top of the circus tent, I don’t have any desire to emulate their deeds. As I sat in my chair watching the aerialists hanging by one foot, I heard, over the loud speaker, the voice of Lee Ann Womack singing “I Hope You’ll Dance.”

It was fitting that as the girls soared higher and higher on their swings, the music spoke of the choices that we all make each day — to be mediocre or to live life to the fullest. It made me want to do more, to try harder, to be that outgoing free spirit I was meant to be. I longed to shed my wallflower weeds and don new, brightly colored garments and, of course, to choose to dance.

“When you get the chance to sit it out or dance, I hope you’ll dance.”

So much is going on in our area. Guess we try to fit in as much as possible because of our forever long, cold winters.

Not all of us are winter folks. We do love the seasons though.

Many are enjoying being able to go camping. Kids love trying to catch a fish or two.

On Saturday morning I saw a mama deer with her three babies crossing Route 8 to Park Road. She was checking them out, letting them cross first. Hope they will be safe. So many coyotes in the area.

Chestertown had their fantastic show of fireworks on Saturday night.

Kyle Mulligan and Amber LeVeille were united in marriage July 9 at Camp Triumph for their outdoor wedding.

What a beautiful day for the happy celebration.

Kjerstia Schilinski visited Rick and Jean Greene and mother Mary on Saturday in Glens Falls. Later, Kjerstia visited Pat Remington in North Creek.

Cody Bacon celebrated his first birthday with a lot of family and friends to help enjoy his special day.

Rollie Cleveland is in the Glens Falls Hospital. He has pneumonia.

An Old Engine Show will be in Edinburg on July 15 and 16.

PHA Camp Triumph will hold services on July 21, 22 and 24 each night at 7 p.m.

The Dalaba Reunion will be at Camp Triumph on July 23.

There were between 50 and 60 people in attendance for the Memorial Service for Neil Dunkley at The Sodom Community Church on Sunday afternoon. A video was showed about his life and family. Many shared a memory. A great fellowship meal was shared after the service.

Former employee not happy with town officials

Tell about something you really liked learning about this school year

To the News Enterprise: A thank you note to the Town of Johnsburg: In March of 2008, I worked for the town Highway Department. After an ice storm, I was with a crew out cleaning up a road when I slipped on ice and injured my knee. After surgery, recovery and rehabilitation I was released by my doctor to go back to work, but at light duty.

The Supervisor and the Town board would not let me come back to work because of the designation of light duty. Because

of the injury to my knee, there are some duties that I am not able to perform, but there was, and still is, a lot that I can do.

I got hurt on the job giving my all for the Town of Johnsburg; I do not believe the Town of Johnsburg showed me the same consideration. All I wanted to do was go back to work. So I just want to say thanks a lot to the Town of Johnsburg.

Little Leaguers thankful for community support To the News Enterprise: On behalf of the Black Diamonds Little League team I would like to recognize and thank the local businesses and supporters for their donations this season.

prizes and awards at The Fun Spot in Lake George. The smiles on the faces of the children along with parents and grandparents were invaluable. It was a day to remember. We are fortunate to raise our children in the pristine Adirondack Mountains with people who support our youth.

Lastly, I would like to thank the families of the team for giving up their time to bring their child or children to the practices and games. The blackflies and rain made it miserable at times, but everyone stuck it out.

A huge thank you goes to Bill Cameron for umping and Mike Dunkley as assistant coach, I couldn’t have done it without you.

Tobacco Control Program launching new initiative To the News Enterprise: New York State Tobacco Control Program has launched a new campaign to educate New Yorkers about the benefits of tobacco-free outdoor recreational areas.

The campaign raises awareness of the environmental impact of tobacco litter, dangers of secondhand smoke and influence on children when tobacco use is not restricted.

Billboards with "Keep Butts Away From Where We Play" can be seen throughout the tri-county area this summer.

Tobacco litter is poisonous to children and wildlife. Discarded cigarette butts are the most common form of litter. Studies show they are toxic, slow to decompose and costly to remove.

Children routinely pick up these toxic butts and try to place them in their mouths.

Public support for outdoor tobacco use restrictions is growing. Outdoor-tobacco-use policies have been enacted in more than 290 local municipalities throughout New York. Locally, 16 municipalities in the tri-county area have adopted policies.

Summer Bash Museum hosting cooking competition planned at Byron Park INDIAN LAKE — The Community Summer Bash, “A Day of Fun for Everyone,” will take place at Byron Park, July 30, 2 to 5 p.m. Volunteers and local organizations have come together to offer this fun day which is sponsored by the Town of Indian Lake. This day-long celebration will feature bounces, games, races and prizes for all ages.

Attendees will be able to sit down with family, friends and neighbors from 4 to 6 p.m. for a community picnic. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided, but all are asked to bring their own sides and beverages.

Futon Chain Gang will perform after the picnic. This country rock band blends early country and southern rock with more contemporary music to make a show for all ages.

Admission for the Community Summer Bash will be $2 for children and $3 for adults, with packages for families of five or more. A wrist bracelet will get access to all events.

The fee for concert and dance only will be $5.

Additional attractions include a Bungee Jump with a $10 charge and Scenic Airplane Ride by Helm’s Aero Service, also at an additional cost.

The museum will host the annual event, "The Adirondacks are Cookin' Out," with activities planned from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. All are included in the price of general museum admission.

A highlight of the day will be an Adirondack-style top chef competition. Outstanding regional chefs will compete in a campfire cook-off.

Visitors are invited to watch and cheer as guest judges choose the winner of this outdoor cooking challenge. Cooking will begin at 10 a.m. Each chef will select his own menu, and all will cook over an open fire. Judging will take place at 1 p.m.

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The first Europeans to set foot in northern New York were explorers, trappers, Jesuit missionaries and soldiers. Their tales are sparse and evidence of their journeys may be buried along waterway routes deep in the Adirondack Mountains. One such artifact, an 18th century clay pipe fragment, was unearthed in 1999, in the town of Indian Lake hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake.

The object was not found by an archeologist in a painstaking archeological dig. There was no Indiana Jones in sight. Elizabeth “Betsy” Folwell, former editor and current creative director at Adirondack Lifè magazine, was simply digging in her garden at home in May 1999, as most gardeners do in the spring, and found the white fragment buried in the dirt. She explained her discovery in an Adirondack Life article, “A Clue in Cl̀ a y,” for the August 1999 issue: “Tilling this plot always yields springtime surprises — 1940s bottle caps, rusty toys, parsnips somehow ignored the fall before now the size and texture of pulp logs — but an eighteenth-century artifact warrants scrutiny.”

After inquiring with archeology professor David Starbuck, of Chestertown, they were able to date the clay pipe fragment to about 1750, five years before the French and Indian War brought warring parties of French, British and provincial soldiers to the Adirondack region along Lake George and Lake Champlain. Lake in 1750? What gives?

While Blue Mountain Lake held no military importance to either France or Britain, it is located along a well-established waterway route, the Eckford Chain of Lakes. Moreover, the community of Blue Mountain Lake is ground zero for the split between two major watersheds: the Hudson River and St. Lawrence River. The water in Blue Mountain Lake eventually flows west into the Raquette River and then north into the St. Lawrence River, and the water in Lake Durant eventually flows east into the Hudson River.

Europeans in the l7th and l8th centuries, even the Native Americans, used these ancient routes through the interior wilderness. French explorer Samuel de Champlain first saw the Adirondack Mountains in 1609 from the lake that now bears his name. This land was claimed

as part of New France until the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763 to conclude the French and Indian War, with France handing over the territory to the victorious British. Henry Hudson, exploring the New World for the Dutch, first sailed up the Hudson River in 1609, and the Dutch built trading posts as far north as Albany.

French trappers and missionaries traveled into the Adirondack region from the north, and Dutch and English trappers entered the wilderness from the south.

In the mid-1700s, British and provincial soldiers and trappers also used southern waterway routes from the Mohawk River for trips into the Adirondacks.

It is this southerly route that inspired Folwell’s Adirondack Life story when she guessed how a 1750-era clay pipe fragment wound up in her garden, a clay pipe

that Starbuck said was probably made in England or Scotland: “After starting out from Sir William Johnson’s lands on the Mohawk River — a four-day trip on foot through thick, damp forest — a party of three rangers stops to camp for the night.”

Of course, there’s no way to know that three rangers actually camped on her Blue Mountain Lake property in the 1750s, broke a clay pipe while preparing for an afterdinner smoke, and left it behind. But someone did leave it, someone who had access to British goods. It was not dumped there during the hotel heydays of the 1890s, Starbuck asserted, when Folwell’s land was cleared. This was a genuine artifact left at Blue Mountain Lake in the 1750s, probably by traders or scouts: “They would have known about temporary Indian camps on waterways like the Rock River and Long Lake and sought native contact for furs and information about troop movements, fortifications and routes,” Folwell wrote.

Folwell chose the perfect time to donate her clay pipe fragment to the Adirondack Museum: during the Harold K. Hochschild Award ceremony on Aug. 9, 2007. She decided to pull a “Warder Cadbury” and give an artifact to the Adirondack Museum while the Adirondack Museum was giving her its highest honor (something Cadbury had done when receiving the Founder ’s Award, now called the Harold Hochschild Award, named after the museum’s founder). The fragment is now artifact No. 2007.40.1 in the museum's collection.

More events, larger crowds expected for Horicon Day

thom@denpubs.com BRANT LAKE — Last year’s ambitious Horicon Day, the first local event of its scope in decades, surpassed all expectations.

In 2010, the event drew crowds all afternoon and evening — hundreds enjoyed the games, car and boat show, food, vendors’ displays, a softball game pitting oldsters against teens, a fireworks show and booths featuring community groups, vendors, or local artisans exhibiting their work.

A Horicon Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary group ran out of food twice, frantically sending a member on two 31-mile round trips to get more food for the hungry crowd.

This year, the volunteer Horicon Day organizers won’t be caught off guard. They’re planning for an even bigger event, Outdoor Fun for Everyone • Route 9N Bolton Landing Maureen Wilson of Horicon said. LONG LAKE — The Long Lake Fourth of July Celebration Weekend was fun-filled with something for everyone.

The streets of Long Lake and Raquette Lake overflowed with visitors for the Long Lake 1981 class reunion, a boat parade, live music in Raquette Lake featuring “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a strawberry shortcake sale to benefit the Raquette Lake Fire Department , and a strawberry shortcake sale in Long Lake to benefit the local boy scout troop.

The traditional games of all ages held on the Long Lake ball field had more than 192 participants enjoying a treasure hunt, sack races, hula hoop races and the venerable egg toss.

Winners of the egg toss were Christine LaRoque and her son William.

The Long Lake bed races kicked off at 5 p.m. on the Long Lake town bridge with four beds. Teams included the Cellar Restaurant and Pub as Smurfs, Wallace Contracting with a patriotic theme, Sam Keller ’s baby crib on wheels, and the Adirondack Hotel adorned with a stuffed bear.

The New York State Department of Transportation gave permission for the bed races to return to their original location after letters of support were given by Senator Elizabeth Little, Town Supervisor Clark Seaman, the Hamilton County Sheriff Karl Abrams, and the Long Lake Rescue Squad. Traffic was managed by the Hamilton County Sheriff ’s patrol and the New York State troopers.

The Wallace Contracting team was the overall winner of the race. Team members included pushers Jordan Wallace, Ben Black, Ryan Kitchen, Andy Snide and rider Danielle Rainbow. The Wallace Contracting winnings were donated to the Long Lake Boy Scouts of America Troop 75. Winning best in show for overall best themed and decorated bed was the Adirondack Hotel with pushers, Stacy Pagoda, Jason Waite, Rob Kissman, Jazen Ruess, and Dave Halter.

Ernie Williams and his band performed on the town beach under the tent while Penelope the Clown entertained the kids. The lifeguards were on duty until 8:30 p.m.

Kids’ fishing derby reels in fish and fun

denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA — With 48 kids and 48 fishing poles with lines and hooks lining the fine shoreline of Minerva Lake, it definitely looked like something big was going on this Minerva day.

It was indeed. On July 2, pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow perch, bullhead, and largemouth bass were all biting like crazy at Minerva Lake. The fish as well as the young anglers were all participating in the annual kids fishing derby.

The fish were quite varied, ranging from very little — 9 grams — to pretty dang big — about 1.3 pounds. They arrived in large bunches at the weighing table, where they were placed on a fine, incredibly accurate triple-beam balance, with weights recorded.

Following this embarrassing situation (for the fish), said fish were then released to the waters of Minerva Lake, hopefully to get bigger for next year ’s Minerva Day. The ages of participants ranged from 2 to 16 — almost everyone caught at least one finny friend that day.

Long Lake jams in summer LONG LAKE — Music jam sessions featuring a variety of acoustic folk instruments will be held on Sunday, July 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at The Knoshery, a short order snack stop with tables under a shelter, near the town beach,in Long Lake.

Musicians of all levels are encouraged to come and join in, and everyone is encouraged to come and listen, sing and dance. Music featured will be old time, Celtic, folk, bluegrass, or anything anyone wants to play or sing. Members of the Bear Strings will be on hand to start off the music. The derby was again sponsored by the Minerva Parks and Recreation Committee, with plenty of support from the Minerva Town Board.

The town supplied the funds for purchase of prizes — fishing tackle for the winners, including fishing poles.

John and Wanda Callihan again donated the grand prize for the monster fish of the

day, a crisp 50-dollar bill. Both Sullivan’s and Murdie’s stores in Minerva sold all the fishing tackle to be used as those wellearned prizes.

Thanks again, too, to Minerva Central School for allowing one of its triple-beam balances to be used for weighing. Thanks to town Lifeguard Meghan LeVeille for providing lifeguard duties.

Newcomb VIC reaches out to sportsmen with new programs

jgrybos@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — In an effort to increase public focus on those who hunt and fish in the Adirondacks, Paul Hai, program coordinator at the Adirondack Ecological Center, has crafted events to appeal to what he said is an under-served crowd.

The Center has a diverse audience in hiking, birding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, but, “We might have really incremental increases if we continue to serve the same audience,” said Hai. Because he wanted to expand his audience, and because they’re very committed to wildlife and conservation, sportsmen were an intuitive fit.

Sportsmen and women are especially important, said Hai, because they generate income for the Conservation Fund, which contributes to wildlife management and law enforcement.

With sales of fishing and hunting licenses, registration for boats and other recreational vehicles, it’s a significant contribution, said Hai, so it’s important for public entities to create interest in those activities.

“As you lose participation, you are losing

a funding source to preserve these places for everybody,” he said.

He described generational amnesia — we tend to spend a little less time doing something our parents did, and their parents before them. If organizations don’t make an effort to attract and create sportsmen, “It’s not just revenue at risk, but a part of our culture” The Adirondack Ecological Center, just down the road from the Interpretive Center and where Hai spends most of his time, does research on the environment and its wildlife.

They can share that research through the Interpretive Center, improving sportsmen’s understanding of species they pursue.

Recorder groups performing in Long Lake next week LONG LAKE — Three recorder groups from the North Country will present a concert at the United Methodist Church in Long Lake Thursday, July 28, at 7:30 p.m.

The music will include Renaissance, Baroque, Latin, folk, swing and contemporary selections with recorders of many sizes and shapes.

Performing will be the Four Winds Recorder Ensemble, a quartet whose members are from Quebec, Rouses Point, Bloomingdale and Ray Brook; the Early Music Players, a trio based in Canton; the Tri-Lakes area Backwater Recorder Consort; and Saranac Lake percussionist Bob Gardner.

A reception to meet the artists will follow the concert. This concert is part of a series presented by the Long Lake Friends of Music and partially funded by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program.

In Hamilton County, the Decentralization Program is administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, located in Blue Mountain Lake. Donations will be appreciated to further fund the concert series.

Stored exhibits open for tours at Adk museum BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — More than 7,000 historic artifacts not currently on exhibit at the Adirondack Museum in a state-of-the-art collections storage facility will be open for tours.

Tours will be offered each Monday in July and August beginning July 11, from 2 to 3 p.m. The tours are free for museum members and $10 for nonmembers. Visitors can sign up for a tour on Mondays at the membership desk in the Visitor Center. Each tour is limited to 30 people.

The Collections Storage and Study Center holds an array of objects from the Adirondack past. Collections consist of boats, including power boats, canoes, kayaks, guideboats, and unusual boats; traditional and rustic furniture; hand tools and machinery; large vehicles, including horsedrawn carriages and sleighs, snowmobiles, fire trucks, and a Jitterbug; maple sugaring equipment; ice harvesting tools; and agricultural artifacts.

Adirondack Museum Conservator and Collections Manager Doreen Alessi will lead the tours. Alessi cares for more than 100,000 two and threedimensional artifacts in the collection of the museum.

Brush accepted for burning BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The transfer station will accept brush for burning on a trial basis, but for limited hours.

The station is open Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though it will only accept brush for burning until 1 p.m.

There must be enough time to extinguish the flames before the station closes for the day. While there are extinguishers available at the Indian Lake station, the Blue Mountain Lake Station has only a garden hose.

Chorus to Perform Wayne Thomas recently assumed duties as president of the Rotary Club of North Creek.

“I’ve only been in this position for a couple weeks,” said Thomas, “but the community’s always been very supportive of the club.”

Thomas said a major priority is helping fund the Outreach Center on Route 28. The club is also planning to donate to the mosaic project on Main Street. The North Creek Rotary Club was chartered in 1949 and has about 35 members.

The second time Allen visited the church, Groll was hard at work on stairs at the building, and Allen said he knew then he wouldn’t have to worry too much about his Blue Mountain Lake church.

“He’s just a wonderful man,” said Allen.

Father Sony Pulickal, who was at Indian Lake for seven years, said Groll took care of the church as if it were his own home. He even prepared for Mass and greeted the parishioners as they arrived, said Pulickal.

Pulickal said watching Groll and his wife is heartwarming, “They’re just like high school sweethearts.”

He’s a person who looks at life with so much optimism, said Pulickal. “When people do things with a smile and with joy, that’s a special thing.”

LONG LAKE — The Long Lake Community Chorus will present its annual Summer Concert in Long Lake on Friday, July 29 at 8 p.m. in the Calvary United Methodist Church next to the Town Hall in Long Lake. The concert is free and open to the public. The chorus, with members from Long Lake, Newcomb and Indian Lake, has been practicing a program of show tunes, light classical, patriotic and spiritual music. Karin Cook, retired music teacher from Long Lake Central School, is the conductor, and Karen Butters, also a retired music teacher, is the accompanist.

The developer ’s numbers come from the leading expert on installing these systems, said Crikelair, adding he doesn’t want the board to think these numbers were arrived at without careful deliberation.

The operations and management bond disparity is over on-site staffing, said Tony Jordan, town attorney. The state Department of Environmental Conservation requires that an operator be assigned to the site, and recommends two hours of on-site supervision daily or one six or eight hour day a week.

Crikelair said the sewer system is very advanced, and needs very little supervision.

“This is not a regular plant where you’re turning dials and all this kind of hooey,” he said.

The only time the operator will be on-site is to conduct required weekly testing for a couple hours.

The very large difference in the numbers for the capital bond did include “a stab in the dark,” Jordan acknowledged.

The engineers weren’t sure about the installation of the treatment plant, including excavation and electrical work, and they had to use their best estimation.

Other issues that will need to be resolved before development can continue include approving the certificate of incorporation for the sewer service, finalizing the user agreement for residents hooked up to the system and deciding on whether billing should break even with operations costs or create a reserve fund.

The Front Street project broke ground in July, 2009. The project site was permitted for up to five hotels, more than 130 townhouses and a select number of single family residences.

The first phase of the Ski Bowl Village project will include 13 townhouse units, with associated infrastructure and a wastewater treatment facility.

The town board has expressed displeasure over delays and requests for permit extensions from the developer at previous meetings.

Death Notices Charles E. Kays, 94 OLMSTEDVILLE — Charles Edward Kays, 94, formerly of Donnelly Rd., passed away peacefully July 17, 2011 at the Adirondack Tri-County Health and Rehab Center in North Creek. Born July 27, 1916 in Pottersville, he was the son of the late Charles and Jennie (Beadnell) Kays. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 21 at St. Joseph’s RC Church in Olmstedville. The Rite of Committal followed in Federal Flats Cemetery, Olmstedville. At Charlie’s request, there are no calling hours scheduled. The Alexander Funeral Home in Warrensburg is in charge of arrangements.

Robert W. Sanford Jr., 16 NORTH CREEK and BROADALBIN — Robert W. Sanford Jr., 16, died suddenly as a result of a tragic accident in Salem July 13, 2011. Born Nov. 3, 1994, in Kingston, he was the son of Robert W. Sanford Sr. and Carrie S. McComsey. He attended Hadley Luzerne Central School from third through ninth grade and had most recently attended Johnsburg Central School. Calling hours were held July 18 at the Hadley Luzerne Wesleyan Church in Lake Luzerne. Funeral services followed the visitation. Family and friends gathered at Pavilion Park in Lake Luzerne following the funeral service.

Arrangements were with the Brewer Funeral Home, Lake Luzerne.

CHESTERTOWN — The town of Chester and the Chester/Horicon Youth Commission will host the Seagle Colony singers as they present Billy Goats Gruff at the town of Chester Municipal Center Theater on July 23 at 10:30 a.m. This opera was written by John Davies and features music by Mozart, Donizetti, and Rossini. Long Lake Central appreciates service LONG LAKE — The school board would like to thank Gail Seaman and Sue Virostek for their years of service at LLCS and their dedication to the students. Seaman, a teaching assistant, will be spending her free time traveling and visiting with her grandchildren. Museum almost at four million visitors BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Museum will soon reach its four millionth visitor, and is ready to greet the guest with a museum membership and a $100 gift card for the museum store.

The museum, open since 1957, reached the one million mark in 1976, two million in 1987 and three million in 1998.

Garden club hosts flower show NORTH WARREN — The next meeting of the Adirondack Mountain Garden Club will be held on Tuesday, August 2 from 10 a.m. until noon at the North Warren Emergency Building, opposite North Warren School. The members will present a mini-flower show displaying floral designs that are inspired by and are reflections of paintings. The public is invited to attend this program.

Canoe trail event planned OLD FORGE — The Northern Forest Canoe Trail, a water trail extending from Old Forge, New York to Fort Kent, Maine is hosting the second “740 Miles in A Day” event Saturday, July 30. This free event aims to get paddlers out on the water and raise awareness of trailside businesses and communities.

You can paddle any distance on any section of river, lake or brook that is part of the trail. Just pre-register and report back on the mile or miles you paddled. Last year’s event totaled more than 1,500 miles paddled.
