“Billy Goats Gruff” hits stage as opera

NORTH CREEK — The Upper Hudson MusicalArts will host the Seagle Colony singers as they pr esent Billy Goats Gr uff at Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek Tuesday, July 19, at 10 a.m. This charming operatic r etelling of the fairy tale story was put together by John Davies and features music from operas by Mozart, Donizetti, and Rossini. This is a great way to introduce young people to the operatic art from while entertaining them at the same time. This free performance is made possible by a generous grant from the Pearsall Foundation.

NORTH CREEK — A committee of dedicated volunteers has been meeting to determine the goals and objectives of the buildings and gr ounds at the Kellogg/W adell Riverfr ont pr operty.

This group is scheduled to meet again Wednesday, July 20 at 3:30 p.m. at the pavilion by the property. Public input is essential to the success of these buildings and gr ounds. Railway opening delayed NORTH CREEK — It will be nine mor e days before the trains start rolling along the Saratoga-North Creek Railroad.

“Our primary concern right now is that the c ommunications, t rack a nd o perations meet with the expectations of the people that have been looking forwar d to this opening for a long time,” said Mike McConville, vice president of operations for the railway. “We want to get this 100 percent right so we can hit the gr ound running, and testing to date has indicated that additional pr eparation work is needed.”

Circus to entertain at Ski Bowl NORTH CREEK — Coming to town Friday, July 15, the Kelly-Miller circus has entertained millions of American and Canadian citizens since it began in 1938.

Shows will be at 2 and 7:30 p.m.

The cir cus is directed by John Ringling North II. North’s gr eat uncles wer e the famous Ringling Brothers and his grandmother was their only sister.

Born into this most famous of circus families, John grew up on the “Greatest Show on Earth,” learning cir cus operation fr om his father Henry Ringling North and uncle John Ringling North.

The show travels on a fleet of 25 vehicles and requires an area of 90,000 square feet to set up on. The circus big top, imported from Italy, has a seating capacity of 1500 and is made of waterproof vinyl. The tent is 120 by 130 feet and 40 feet high. It’s supported by more than a quarter of a mile of heavy gauge

aluminum tubing and several miles of rope, steel cable and chain.

The Kelly Miller Cir cus has gather ed a galaxy of stars from many nations, as well as an exotic display of animals, enhanced them with theatrical lighting and circus music for a performance to warm the hearts of young and old alike.

From the early morning hours when the elephants pull the big top into the air to the very moment when theking pole races to the ground at the end of the day, the public are invited to come and be a part of the magic of circus day.

Increasing the occupancy tax could help our economy

W

hat’s the big idea? Keeping our taxes down. That’s the big idea.

The Clinton County Legislatur e is in the p rocess o f d eciding w hether t o i ncrease the county occupancy tax fr om 3 to 4 percent, a suggestion brought up to legislators by the North Country Chamber of Commer ce. Is it a good idea? W e think so.

No one likes to see taxes go up, yet the cost of pr oviding services never goes down, and the pool from which to draw has r emained r elatively stagnant. So what is one possible solution to pr ovide our communities with the services they need without putting more of a pinch on our wallets? That’s right; you guessed it — the occupancy tax.

But, how does the occupancy tax help?

The way an occupancy or “bed” tax works is a certain percentage is built into the cost of r enting a r oom at a hotel or motel. That money is then given to the taxing jurisdiction, in this case, Clinton County, to be used toward promoting the area to tourists. W e know what you’r e thinking, “So? How does that help keep my taxes down?”

Well, it does in an indirect way. Think of it this way — by utilizing less of the money generated by property taxes, water and sewer taxes, and sales tax (another issue we’ll touch on in a bit) for pr omoting tourism, it puts those funds back in county cof fers to be used in other areas. And, it’s important to remember that promoting tourism her e is something that — and not to oversimplify it — is giving a little to get a lot.

According to County Legislator Harry McManus, the fishing tournaments that have been held locally this year to date have generated appr oximately $155,000 in the local economy. That’s not bad, given the concerns many have had over the lasting ef fects of this spring’s devastating flood. It’s also important to r ealize

that money would likely not have been generated without pr oper pr omotion, drawing people from across the border in Canada and from other places in and outside of New York State.

When tourists come to our region, they stay here, they shop her e, they eat her e, thereby helping all of us. And, if we’ve created enough of a mecca for them to do all that (which we feel we have especially with a str ong Canadian dollar), upping the bed tax by 1 percent really won’t be something to deter them from coming here or coming back again and again.

What about the sales tax issue? W ell, in our opinion, that would likely be the second best option for generating r evenue.

The only downside to increasing sales tax is that we who live here would bear the brunt of that hike. Sur e, we all know Canadian travelers who migrate south when the dollar is in their favor are the ones who spend a good chunk of money here. However, raising sales tax with the idea that they’d help raise the bulk of the money to help cover the costs of our municipal services is highly unlikely. It’s the rest of us who live her e and spend our hard-earned dollars here that would suffer in the scenario of a sales tax hike.

Nearly all bed tax revenue would come from visitors to the r egion, who use our services and infrastr ucture while they are here.

Bottom line? If the legislatur e is encouraged to move ahead with an occupancy tax hike, we don’t think it’d be the end of the world. In fact, it could help draw even more travelers through more promotion and ultimately strengthen our local economy.

Has our nation gone soft?

To the News Enterprise: I am writing in regards to the article “Raquette Lake fundraiser scheduled” that appeared on the front page of your July 2, 2011 edition. The article included a few quotes from Elizabeth Forsell, the fundraiser or ganizer. Although I applaud Mrs. Forsell’s ef forts to raise funds that will benefit students at Indian Lake Central School (ILCS), I take exception to her statement, “I just don’t think they give out enough awards.”

As a veteran teacher at ILCS, one of the many things I am pro ud of ILCS for is the number of scholarships of fered annually at senior graduation. Various organizations, families and others connected to the ILCS community pre sented a total of 53 scholarships at this year ’s graduation. Four of those scholarships wer e $1,000 a year for four years, while another was $1,500 a year for four years. In addition to the scholarships presented at graduation, ILCS seniors also r eceive school-based and merit-based s cholarship m oney f rom colleges and universities. Each ILCS graduate was the recipient of a minimum of one monetary scholarship, while many students received multiple awards.

The article also stated “Forsell said schools such as T upper Lake Central

School give out many mor e scholarships than ILCS, which ar e needed to purchase expensive textbooks in college.” T o compar e T upper Lake and ILCS is comparing apples to oranges.

Tupper Lake graduated 73 students this year, while ILCS had 17 graduates.

Although mor e scholarships ar e always appreciated and ther e can never be too many, the number of awards presented at ILCS graduation annually is very respectable.

Stop gay marriage To the News Enterprise: New York State has high unemployment, roads that are crumbling and bridges that are falling apart. Where is the priority for Gov . Cuomo and a handful of senators? Apparently their priority is “Marriage Equality.”.If you believe the propaganda, then you think a majority of people support this. If the GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning) community truly believes this, then there should be no problem placing this on a ballot for the entir e state to vote on, not a few senators. That is what I’m proposing.

If you’r e as upset as I am that the governor and the senate have almost made “Gay Marriage” legal, then I would ur ge you to call, write, fax, or email Gov . Cuomo and the senators

that voted in favor of this. Let them know you don’t support “Marriage Equality” a nd th at y ou w ill b e m ore than happy to replace them in the next election.

There were between 50 and 60 people in attendance for the Memorial Service for Neil Dunkley at The Sodom Community Chur ch on Sunday afternoon. A video was showed about his life and family. Many shared a memory. A great fellowship meal was shared after the service.

NASA isn’t going away but with no schedule for accomplishments and a soft plan for its future many are predicting a lost decade or more while we labor away on the day’s pressing issues and watch our political leaders fight and argue endlessly over every issue, bringing none it seems ever to a conclusion. With both sides dug in on ideological positions and no air of compromise in the discussions we merely Band-Aid the issues until it flairs up again in the future.

One can argue that the space race and exploration is a waste of tax dollars and manpower, but until we as a nation can come together on a purpose much larger than our own self interests and create a passion and optimism that allows us to see beyond life’s trials and troubles, I fear we’ll continue to be in the malaise that seems to hold us captive today.

INDIAN LAKE — Summer yoga hosts Karin and Gare t Church will return to their North Country residence and teach yoga classes at Indian Lake Theater.

Two classes taught at two levels will be held each week July 14 through September 10, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Students are asked to bring their own yoga mats and two bath towels or a small blanket to each class. The fee for each class is $10.

Thursdays will be the intermediate class at Indian Lake Theater , and Satur days will be the basic class at the Indian Lake Ski Hut, Route 30.

The Churches donate their time to teach these classes at Indian Lake Theater and the session fee of $10 is donated directly back to the theater.

INDIAN LAKE — The old Blue Mt. Lake water tower will be demolished and sold for scrap metal by the end of the year if all goes according to plan, Indian Lake Supervisor Barry Hutchins said.

“It’s serving no purpose,” Hutchins said, adding that metal prices were up.

The structure was replaced about four to five years ago when rising costs made updating the old tower ro ughly as expensive as constructing a new one, the supervisor said.

Hutchins hopes that selling the metal will recoup the cost of removing the structure.

“We’re hoping that it doesn’t cost us anything to get it down and taken car e of,” the supervisor said, adding that if the town

makes a profit it would be an added bonus.

Hutchins has made contact with Eric Smith of Ren-Wash Salvage, who the supervisor hopes will take the job of removing the old structure. While Smith can’t do it immediately, he is interested in doing it at a later date, according to Hutchins.

“We haven’t finished talking to him,” the supervisor said.

The old tower was being written up by inspectors at their biennial visits, and bringing the structure up to code didn’t make economic sense.

“There wasn’t a good maintenance pr ogram for years and years,” Hutchins said of the old structure.

The new tower is glass-fused, pr otecting the steel from rust, according to Kevin King, foreman of the Indian Lake W ater Department.

Enjoy a ‘Weekend on the Waterfront’ jgrybos@denpubs.com LONG LAKE — What to do with two cases of duct tape and a truckload of cardboard? If visiting Long Lake for Weekend on the Waterfront, that duct tape and cardboard can be fashioned into a short-lived battleship in a juryrigged flotilla.

The water-centric weekend came together by happy accident, said Alex Roalsvig, tourism dir ector for Long Lake.

When they did a wooden boat show last year , ther e was a conflict with Old Forge, which runs a larger show.

When accommodating Old Forge’s schedule, the rescheduled wooden boat show fell on the same weekend as the Crazy Cool Regatta, and Art on the W ater, leading to a r ebranding of all the events into an extended, waterfr ont celebration.

“We want to have a lot of action down on the water ,” Roalsvig said.

Cool Crazy Regatta The races begin at 10 a.m. Friday morning, with fr ee registration opening at 9:30. The events will include novelty races, hand-paddling canoes, a dr ess-up r elay, tug of war and a dipper race where each team has an opponent in their craft who tries to fill it up with water and slow them down.

“They’re just goofy races,” said Roalsvig, “It’s not uber -competitive.”

Participants can r egister in gender -specific, kid-only , adult-only or mixed-age classes for the races. Canoes, kayaks and life jackets will be provided at the event, though participants can bring their own.

Prizes will be awarded, and the Lions Club will be serving lunch on the beach for the regatta.

Float Night and Cardboard Box Boats The Cardboard Box Boat Face-Of f will cap Float Night at the Long Lake beach beginning 5 p.m., July 15. Float Night began as the second-hand brainchild of Roalsvig.

A float night happened at a local pool in New Jersey when Roalsvig lived there, with inflatables and a DJ. She thought the idea would work well in Long Lake.DJ Glen LaBlanc will be entertaining the attendees.

The box boat battle will start at 7 p.m., and was proposed by a young woman working in the tourism of fice last year.

Roalsvig’s departments asks the transfer station to save up a pile of cardboard, “it’s all clean car dboard,” and they got duct tape to make the craft slightly less sinkable. Participants will try to sink each other , with the survivor taking home a prize.

Art on the Water, Long Lake Art and Photo Show When visitors come to Long Lake, said Roalsvig, “we want to show them the talent we have in our town.” These events were dovetailed this year, she said, complementing each other and r ounding out the weekend with a display of local, artistic talent.

The Long Lake Art and Photo show begins Friday at town hall, and runs through July 24.

Art on the Water is scheduled for Satur day, and was cr eated by the Long Lake Artisans’ Cooperative, which formed earlier this year. Beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting through 5 p.m., local artists will display and sell their works. Ther e will also be live demonstrations of crafting including rustic furniture, wooden paddles and woodwork.

Wooden Boat Show “There’s a lot of wooden boat show aficionados,” Roalsvig said. Many people in the area have Chris Crafts and Hacker Crafts, she said, and the town wanted to give them a venue to show off their machines from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

A bit like a classic car show on the water , boat owners bring out their prize. The craft’s captains will ride in a boat parade, while onlookers put in their vote for their favorite.

The highest tally is awarded the Spectator ’s Choice award.

“It’s really a casual event,” Roalsvig said. The show isn’t competing with the lar ger expos, “It’s very small, very local.”

The leaks were initially discovered as part of the installation process of the town’s new water system.

It will eventually include new wells and a new 500-gallon water storage tank,Seaman said.

The old reservoir system will eventually be phased out, becoming a back-up system.

The new system has been in the planning stages for “several years,” Seaman said, but it wasn’t until last summer that construction began.

That’s when the tank was installed. But the water line leading up to the tank was not installed until this year, in the late spring or early summer, Seaman said.

The town had run out of time.

“Just because of the weather,” Seaman said. “Winter set in.”

When the water line was eventually connected to the tank, very little water actually got to the storage unit, Seaman said. They couldn’t fill it.

Since then, the Long Lake water department has been experimenting with ways of filling the tank using the current reservoir system, Seaman said.

Department workers tried to fill the tank with an auxillary pump that pro duces greater volume, as opposed to pressure. It worked, and they were able to push some water into the tank, Seaman said.

In the near future, Seaman said, they will try to fill the tank in the middle of the night when there is not a significant water demand. This will allow the company who built the tank to do a leak test. The new wells, which will be a part of the new water system, ar e still in the process of being developed, Seaman said.

The supervisor said he obviously wanted to fix the leak. But he tried to put the gallons of water lost in perspective, saying he hear d that at one point Lake Placid lost two million gallons per day, before initiating a determined leak prevention program.

Connie Prickett, the director of communications for the Conservancy’sAdirondack chapter, said she was unable to provide information on the deal until it was completed.

Newcomb was originally offered six parcels, totaling about 1,000 acres, from the Nature Conservancy, Canon said. These had been Finch, Pr uyn and Co. land befor e being sold to the environmental organization in 2007, according to Prickett.

The town held a public meeting on the issue, wher e the opinion seemed to be the town should purchase all the land offered, the supervisor said.

With the Conservancy, the town shar ed the cost of surveying and appraising the ar eas.

The resulting sale price was more than the town could afford, Canon said. So the town decided to purchase only three out of the six parcels offered.

There were some issues with the sale agreement though.

The Conservancy wanted a long-term use easement on the industrially-zoned parc el that would allow the organization to continue storing logs there. These terms were not acceptable to the town, Canon said. The two sides compr omised by allowing the Conservancy certain rights to the parcel until Dec. 31, 2012.

In addition, the Conservancy wanted the town to assume esponsibility r for moving a cabin off the golf course parcel. The two sides eventually agreed that if the current lessee does not move it, the Conservancy will do so, the supervisor said.

Also, there is some constraint on the golf course parcel. The town is allowed to maintain a snowmobile trail and nothing else within 300 feet of the Hudson River , according to Canon.

The golf course parcel, the largest, will cost $136,930, the supervisor said. The farmhouse and logyard parcels will cost a combined $1 19,661. In addition, the town will be char ged $10,000 for the survey and $3,500 for the appraisal.
