Main Street mosaic materializing

NORTH CREEK — The North Cre ek Mosaic Project installation began last week, as local artist Kate Hartley and a team of trained volunteers applied elements created by community volunteers of all ages.

The Daisy Scouts of T roop 3686 cr eated mosaic daisies to be added to the wall.

Johnsburg Central School seventh-grade groups made skiers and snowboar ders to adorn the mural’s distant mountain, through the support of anAdirondack Arts in Education grant. Several seventh-grade boys made turkey hunters, who will walk along the river with their prize.

An After School Art Club class worked on individual creatures and plants, and together made a large cloud.

The project still needs floor tiles of any color, flat shells and stones.

Westport’s shared community building could be a state model

I

t’s time to bring things together in the town of Westport.

Since 2002, a committee made up of members of the Town of Westport and Department of Public Works, Westport Central School District and Westport Volunteer Fire Department have been working to find a way to upgrade their buildings while keeping taxes down for members of the municipalities.

Their proposal is a new municipal center, which will house all four entities in one form or another, from town offices, courthouse, garage bays and repair facilities.

After a failed vote over a year ago, the committee has sent the proposed bond resolution back before the voters, hoping that the second time and an increase of public information sessions and communication will reverse a seven-vote defeat.

Voting in favor of this measure is the right way to go, not only for the future of Westport but for the future of the North Country.

For years, the New York State Comptroller ’s office, as well as state lawmakers like Elizabeth “Betty” Little and Teresa Sayward, have been advocating shared services among municipalities, and a combined building to house multiple entities is the perfect example of how these groups can work together to save taxpayers money.

Westport could be an example for the state to use, showing others how to work together.

While three smaller buildings may cost less in terms of building, you are going to pay three times as much for engineering studies, planning, zoning process, permitting, labor, heating, maintenance and general costs incurred by running a municipal building. That puts an added long-term burden on the taxpayers of the community that is not needed or wanted. In short, we feel that a vote against this project would be a vote for increased taxes over the long term, which is something no one wants to face, anywhere.

Many municipalities in the North Country are faced with this issue. Buildings do not last as long because of the harsh weather conditions. Vehicles cannot be left

outside in the cold months, either because the water in a fire truck would freeze or the stress of starting vehicles in cold weather would severely decrease the life of the vehicles, adding more on the backs of the taxpayers.

Most towns are facing the same decisions with multiple properties, and, as Westport School Board member Dwayne Stevens said at a recent meeting, four walls to take care of is better than 12 or more.

This plan would also get two pieces of property back onto the tax rolls in the WADA building and the current site of the firehouse. Even if the worst-case scenario is realized and these buildings have to be taken down, they are both properties in the heart of the downtown area and would be profitable on the tax rolls.

It also doesn’t take any more property off the tax rolls, since the site would be built on the current town shed property.

Building elsewhere — like the Westport Industrial Park, would mean a loss in revenue for the town, even with no one currently building there.

Every municipality knows that the more money they can get on the tax rolls, the less impact it will have on all. If you have three pieces of tax-exempt property and you can add even just one of those parcels back onto the rolls — building or not — you do it.

We do empathize with the loss of a town hall near what is considered the town center, but, in all honesty, we now live in an automotive society where it is not a hardship to travel an extra mile for services.

For sentimental reasons, it should stay.

However, the WADA building in Westport used to be a hub of teenage activity from community center nights to dances and other events. None of that happens there now.

Times change. In order to keep up with the times, we must as well.

Ski Bowl Garden taking shape

hursday, June 30, we had our first group of Youth Works workers come to the Ski Bowl Garden.

They were awesome!

This was the best group ever! They were fun to work with and WOW, did they work! With all of the rain, the garden had gotten overgrown with weeds. The paths were full of weeds and flowers that had spilled

We had seven kids from Pittsburg and five from the Boston area that “dug” in and started weeding. I had asked Dan to deliver a bucket load of wood chips, and these kids used them up and two more were delivered.

The paths are now looking splendid and about one-half of the gardens have been weeded.

The interesting thing about this group was that they had fun doing it. It just shows that ATTITUDE is the key. They came to have fun and work hard and it worked. They worked really hard weeding in the morning-which is not a whole lot of fun. They sat in the paths and chatted and worked. In the afternoon, they spread the rest of the wood chips and after four hours of hard work they were still running wheelbarrows through the paths.

At the end they decided that the garden needed some “art work,” so we now have a few rock totems in just the right places. Come take a look. The rocks were donated by Chuck Barton from Ruby Mountain.

I would like to thank Anita Abrams, Mary Goddard and Sue Forrest for joining us on our work day. Youth Works really likes to have local people at their work sites to visit with and learn about the area. They were a big help getting the garden cleaned up.

Every day when we get out of bed in the morning we have a choice of how we will approach life challenges.

These kids just show how having the right attitude can make your day. They sure made mine!

The garden is looking really wonderful. The iris and peonies are gone but the lilies and globe thistle are about to pop. Sandy Cashman is caregiver to the rose garden and we lost about six rose bushes last year. She has replaced them and the roses are blooming already.

Thanks Sandy! Roses are the symbolic flower of Love.

Lilies are a symbol of purity, innocence and goodness.

According to folklore, a dream about lilies during their time of bloom will lead to marriage, happiness and wealth. Lilies are a mainstay in many of the gardens of old. They bring back many happy memories of grandma’s gardens.

A

ndy Flynn, Editor of the News Enterprise, wrote a piece in the June 25 viewpoint that slaps together, rather awkwardly, two separate subjects: A) the Richards affair , including what is or is not an appropriate penalty for Richards’s pre-election conduct; and B) a glib evaluation of the Johnsburg Central School Citizens Budget Committee (JCS-CBC) — very BAD — and of the JCS School Board — very GOOD. Let’s look briefly at the Richards affair and more deeply into the second matter, School Board vs JCS-CBC, where Andy makes a pretense of being informed, but none of being objective.

A. Our issue with Richards had nothing to do with whether he was or was not a “good” man. We concede that he is and likely will continue to be a good man. The issue, and the related matter of appropriate penalty, involved solely the gravity with which we viewed a person in his position — tenured teacher, volunteer coach, and Board Member of long standing — openly, indeed proudly, acting in disrespect of the election process, the most essential institution in our constitutional republic. Your editorial board felt exactly the same as we did, although they expressed their view in offensive hyperbole (something about handcuffing the offender), which we never did.

While originally we demanded he step down from the School Board, once it became apparent that he and his board colleagues would have none of it, JCS-CBC reviewed the matter carefully. Finally we decided that the appropriate penalty would involve a learning experience — their having to deal with the current fiscal crisis at a time they have run out of large scale accounting gimmicks and hidden cash hoards, both of which they used up to advance their agenda in the 2011-2012 Budget Vote and Board Election.

B. An opinion writer has considerable latitude. But held to account, he will find it awkward to base his judgments on manifestly wrong “facts”, or absence of facts, or conscious neglect of facts that don’t support the opinions he is eager to express. Flynn abused his position by writing an authoritative opinion regarding the JCS Board and our committee, which utterly lacked the authority of knowledge. Consider a small smattering of readily available pertinent information Mr. Flynn managed to overlook: 1. The JCS School Board has for decades presided over a

decline in enrollment and rise in per student costs, while student performance has stagnated. Is this the “good work” of the Board you unstintingly praise??

2. Our school loses a steady stream of students not only to homeschooling but also to nearby institutions as alert parents and students conclude, based on their direct experience over time, that these do a better job educating kids than does JCS. Is this the trend that so attracts Flynn to the JCS Board?

3. Art, Environmental Fun Day held at LLCS

“Quick, take a picture.”

“What does deciduous mean?”

These were exclamations heard throughout the day at Long Lake Central School as the elementary classes ventur ed outside for the inaugural Art and the Envir onment Fun Day on June 20.

Following the introduction, students rotated between three centers. The Nature Scavenger Hunt, lead by Alex Harris, allowed students to pair up (with fifth and sixth graders teaming up with kinder garteners), explore and draw, describe or collect items listed. The students were intent as they searched and whooped with excitement as they found their desir ed treasures.

Nature Crafts were taught by Sue Virostek using birch bark, beads, twigs, string and scissors with results including bookmarks, bracelets and puppy tails.

Collaborative Environmental Sculptures, guided by Christine LaRocque, used Bill Dan andAndy Goldsworthy as exemplary artists using environmental elements to implement their art. Working in groups, the students planned sculpture s which were modified as they became acquainted with the natural medium required for their pieces. Exciting art was pr oduced by the burgeoning artists.

Energy and hilarity were expended during the group games lead by Joe San Antonio, Hamilton County Community Services Prevention Educator, including “Snakes in the Grass” and “Bear, Salmon, Mosquito.” Joe also read from “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss, encouraging the students to tr easure the unique natural resources, the community and the environment found in Long Lake.

The day itself could not have been better, with the sun shin-

ing, the sky blue and the black flies absent. Following the har d work at the centers and active fun at the games, hot and sweaty students were refreshed by cool watermelon slices pr ovided

The activities commenced with Christine Campeau, of the Adirondack Museum, pr esenting an animal pelts and skulls workshop. This session brought out the inquisitive skills of the students as Christine was pummeled with questions ranging from, “How did the animals die?” to “Can we touch them?”

All inquiries were skillfully (and humorously) answered and the students were able to feel the soft fur and sharp teeth.

This day was planned in collaboration with the Long Lake PTSO to give students a chance to use natur e to adopt r esources available in their own surroundings. The day also encouraged students to engage their own tools of observation, cooperation, listening and curiosity. The event was developed as a way to incorporate fun with a program of science, art, history and interpersonal educational goals.

Long Lake Central students receive awards Grades 7-12 The Air Force Recruiting Service annually recognizes outstanding academic achievement and excellence in math and science.

Staff hired at Long Lake Central LONG LAKE — Long Lake Central School added four new staff to their ranks.

Nicole Andrews, an LLCS alumna, was hir ed as the grades seven thr ough 12 science teacher. Andrews holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in chemistry and a minor in biology and a Master of Science degr ee in teaching from SUNY Potsdam. Andrews is planning on moving from Camp Sabattis, where she grew up, to a place in town.

Gerhartz holds a Bachelor of Arts in inclusion elementary education for pre-K through sixth grades and in special education, with a concentration in social studies, fro m Niagara University. She also holds two Master of Science degre es; one from the College of St. Rose in special education with a concentration in learning disabilities, and the otherom fr Jones University in elementary education grades one thr ough six. Gerhartz has experience as a r esource r oom teacher , a consultant teacher , substitute teacher , and 15:1:1 teacher. She has served as both a class advisor and club advisor, and has been involved in public library children’s programs. She and her husband Wayne are planning on moving to Long Lake. Wayne is an avid snowmobiler and a furniture maker.

Alexandria Harris joins the team as a teaching assistant who will oversee the online learning courses offered at LLCS. Several students will take college-level English courses, and other students will take high school classes thro ugh Indiana University. She will also serve as an assistant in kindergarten through grade 12 classrooms. Harris graduated from LLCS in 2007 with a Regents diploma, St. Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in History and a minor in education certification, and is curr ently working on her Master of Education degre e at SUNY Potsdam in curriculum and instru ction. Harris already worked at LLCS as a substitute teacher and was involved in PTSO activities.

The new plant is curr ently being r un by an independent contractor who is debugging the system while showing the water department how to use it, according to King. The entire plant will be computer operated, but one can still manually override its workings.

The debugging and training pr ocess usually takes two weeks, King said. After which, for appr oximately another fortnight, his team would r un the plant under the supervision of the independent contractor. When everyone involved feels comfortable, King’s team will completely take over. He guessed this would be sometime in July.

The old plant, which was replaced, was built in the 1970s or earlier, King said. It did not have a filter with which toer move iron and manganese.

The old plant was not lar ge enough to accommodate the necessary upgrades, King said, estimating that the new plant was roughly three times bigger than the old one.

When water from local wells comes to the new plant, it’s pre-treated with chlorine and a caustic, King said. It goes through f ilters a nd u ltra v iolet l ight. I t s its i n t he p lant’s “finished well” for a designated period of time before being

While the plant is currently in operation, residents might not notice a significant difference in their water quality until the end of the year, the supervisor said. This is due to the time it will likely take for the old pipes to be cleaned through use.

Weekly summer series kicks off in Indian Lake INDIAN LAKE — Local teen and theater pr ogram assistant Vinnie Smith kicked off the summer with a new youth book and film series called V innie’s Playhouse, T uesday mornings through Aug. 23.

Smith will be r esponsible for the whole pr ogram, with support and guidance fr om Indian Lake Library Dir ector Nancy Berkowtiz and Indian Lake Theater Dir ector Pat Connor.

This new, weekly summer series is designed to provide a safe and educational space for childre n 5 to 10 years old and their families, where they can re ad, watch movies, learn, and have fun.

The program will include book re adings at the library and a viewing of live performances or films of that story at the theater the following Tuesday. The books include; The Thre e Billy Goats Gruff, The Little Engine That Could, Charlotte’s Web, and Horton Hears a Who. On Tuesday, July 12, at 10 a.m., the Seagle Music Colony will perform for Vinnie’s Playhouse series with an operatic version of Billy Goats Gruff, live at the theater.

The Seagle Music Colony, which is the premier opera and musical theater producing organization in the Adirondacks, will retell the fairy tale story as a childr en’s opera, featuring music by Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini. This special performance is free and open to the public.

“The Seagle Colony is a nationally-r ecognized summer theater program. For over 80 years, they've been right over in Schroon Lake doing their thing, and we ar e very excited to have them coming over to Indian Lake to perform her e,

for our kids,” said Connor, theater director.

The other three books that will be read at the library will be shown as films at the theater, helping kids make connections between great books and classic and newer Hollywood movies.

"All of us at the Library are so very pleased to be co-hosting this series with the Indian Lake Theater,” Library Director Berkowitz said. “W e hope this pr ogram will r emind everyone that we have two great cultural venues right here in Indian Lake for free family fun, all summer long.”

All events in the series will be fr ee. The V innie’s Playhouse series is funded in part by the Indian Lake Community Charity Yard Sale.

Smith said, “It’s going to be a really fun summer, and I’m excited to r un this pr ogram for the kids in town. Oh, and there will be special prizes for everyone who comes to all eight shows!”

Adams has forged a career out of capturing landscapes and snippets of history from the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes and New York state, and turning them into lush,

acoustic instrumental music compositions.

GREENVILLE, NC — Wayne L. Sheridan, 68, passed away June 30, 2011.

Wayne was born onApril 26, 1943 to John and Helen Duf fy Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hide Sheridan and his parents.

He r etired fr om the U.S. Marine Corps as a Master Staf f Sergeant after 22 years of service. During this time, he completed three tours in Vietnam, receiving special recognition in many areas.

Later in his military career, he became a recruiter and was presented with a Silver Swor d by the U.S. government for his dedication as the highest-ranking recruitment officer.

Wayne was an active participant of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Greenville, NC. He belonged to Ironwood Country Club, V.F.W. Post 2740 and the North Creek Depot Museum Association. Wayne was a loving and caring bro ther and uncle who took great pleasure in being involved in his nieces’ and nephews’ lives.

Survivors include his thr ee sisters; Helene S. Miner and husband, Albert R., of North Cr eek, NY and Surf City, NC, Lauraine L. Nieuwenhuyzen and husband, John R., of Fredericksburg, VA and Geraldine Duffy and husband, Larry, of Fairbanks, AK. Several nieces and nephews; Rick Miner and wife, Jamie, T errie Carlton and husband, David, Cindie Johnson and husband, T odd, Beckie McGee and husband, Terry, Paula Nahler , Joseph M. Blinkhorn, Thomas P .
