denpubs@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE Ñ A 44-yearold man entered the St. MaryÕ s Roman Catholic Church here Saturday evening carrying a loaded .45 pistol, extra magazine and knife and was eventually subdued by an altar boy after spewing obscenities and throwing objects at parishioners. He died in the struggle with the altar boy and parishioners. In reviewing the events that occurred during this past June 28 Saturday eveningsÕ services at St. MaryÕ s Roman Catholic Church here, Rev. Phillip Allen explained that Jason M. Berg, 44, had been present in the church during the early part of the services and was quiet at that point, but then left for a long period of time only to return later. It was the first in a series of events which ended with Berg dead after being subdued during what state police describe as a, “violent struggle,” with some parishioners after he had attempted to make his way to the front of the church. Berg never fired a shot in the building, instead being subdued by a 17-year-old server, reported as Jeff DeShaw, along with others after making obscene comments and making his way toward the front, overturning candle holders which caused injuries to a pair of parishioners. Allen said when Berg returned to the Saturday service, he was wearing a shirt he did not have on during his earlier attendance. Ò He was wearing sunglasses and several layers of clothing,” Allen said. Ò My altar server was watching him and said Berg was pacing.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

MINERVA Ñ The Minerva School Board met June 26 to exchange views about the possibility of being forced to enact a contingency budget for the 2014-15 school year. The meeting comes amid a series of special board sessions surrounding the schoolÕ s budget turmoil. The districtÕ s second budget vote was held on June 17 resulting in a 59 percent approval Ñ slightly less than the 60 percent super-majority needed to implement the proposed budget. In an unusual turn of events

following that vote, the district had a discrepancy with the number of voters signed in to vote and the number of votes that were registered by the voting machine. Subsequently, the district filed an appeal with the state Department of Education to hold a third attempt at the vote with a correctly functioning machine. “The appeal was filed last Friday (June 20),” said Minerva Superintendent Tim Farrell. “It was assigned a file number and we (the school attorney’s) intend to follow up in the first part of next week.” In the meantime, the board took to the chore of reducing spending. A contingency budget requires the

district to cut an additional $443,000 from the proposed spending plan. Effective July 1, the school will be operating under a contingency budget as outlined by the state Department of Education. While the district holds out hope for a re-vote, they are preparing for the worst. Ò This is really the choice between several bad choices,” said Farrell. “The thought behind the proposal is purely financial and to get to $443,000 you must eliminate some positions.” Under a contingency budget the following cuts have been proposed: CONTINUED ON PAGE 10
