Adirondack artist featured at Tannery Pond

Along with his gallery , Casagrain maintains a home studio, and said that art “is all I’ve ever done to make a living.” He’s been painting full-time since the ’80s.

Casagrain said he really enjoys talking to gallery visitors, and when discussing paint-

ing, he thinks of art in musical terms. “I love music,” he said.

“Visual art is basically music in a visual form,” said Casagrain. He said ther e ar e many similarities between music and visual art, “When you discuss a painting, you speak in musical terms.” Conversations about artwork use wor ds like composition, flow and rhythm.

In keeping with Casagrain’s outlook on music and art, an artist reception scheduled for July 22 at 5 p.m. will be followed by a concert at 7:30 p.m.

Prints will be available and ar e made-toorder. Casagrain said he can satisfy any custom size desired by the buyer.

The artist makes canvas prints of his work using giclee process, French for sprayed ink.

It uses ar chival ink that is sprayed on the canvas, then varnished, cr eating a very durable piece that can even be washed, said Casagrain. He called it “the highest quality printing method that’s used today.”

For a mor e finished touch, Casagrain can also return to the print and add textur e to the surface, creating a unique piece, he said.

Depot museum hosts talks NORTH CREEK — The next “If These Platforms Could Talk” presentation will be Friday, July 1, at 1:30 p.m. at the Depot in North Cr eek. “I think it was a scary thing for somebody 6 years old to see her grandmother sick and losing her hair ,” Kelly said.

With chemotherapy and surgery to battle the cancerous cells, Kelly shaved her head. In a sign of their close

relationship, Dunkley was right with her grandmother, helping out with a tough moment in a tough time.

These dif ficulties got Dunkley and her grandmother thinking, of all things, about lemonade.

At Sullivan’s, a brand of lemonade called Alex’s was sold. On its label was the story of a young girl diagnosed with cancer befor e her first birthday, who started selling lemonade at age 4 to benefit childhood cancer research.

Dealing with cancer was so tough for her and her granddaughter, said Kelly , that the idea of childr en going thr ough such har dships made them want to do whatever they could to help.

So Dunkley launched her own stand in 2006. She r uns the stand on Minerva Day , because “that’s the busiest day here” For her first couple years, Dunkley used a table for her stand. But soon, her family all pitched in to make a dedicated stand. Her grandfather, Tom Kelly, built fr om plans for an easy to build and br eak down stand that her mother , Car oline Kelly, found. Her br other, Riley , helped paint the stand with bright colors their grandfather had handy.

Her family also helps out by making cookies and brownies for the ef fort. Two years ago, Dunkley’s mother made chocolate chip cookies

that sold so fast, she had to run back home and make another batch.

She’s had help staffing the stand from her fourth-grader br other, a cousin and a Fresh Air kid.

Dunkley’s mother said she’s very pr oud of her daughter, and her grandmother add ed, “It’s nic e to be dedicated to something like this that helps other people.”

The family no longer has a supplier f or Alex’s L emonade, s o t hey m ake d o w ith canned lemonade but still forward their earnings to the foundation.

This year , the foundation sent p ledge s heets t hat a re available at Sullivan’s.

When a donation is made, the contributor can put their name on the sheet for display in store with other charitable souls.

The stand will r un from 8 a.m. to noon. Their goal last year was $500, just like this year, and they hit $400, with a couple dollars kicked in by her mother to make it a nice round number.

Familypalooza 2011 kicks off summer in Blue Mountain B L U E M O U N TA I N L A K E — K i c k - o f f your summer with an action-packed day for your whole family by joining the Adirondack Museum for Familypalooza 201 1 on Saturday, July 9. The Adirondack Museum invites childr en age 17 and under to visit free of charge for this special event.

Familypalooza will be a full day of family fun, adventur e and exploration at the Adirondack Museum. Bring your family and rock out to the hottest kid-friendly music, presented by Radio Disney, Albany. The Zoomobile fr om the Utica Zoo will be onsite with animals of New York State. Special programs will take place fr om 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Adirondack Mountain Club, Albany Chapter will be off ering introduction to kayaking and safety and r escue demonstrations. The action-packed demonstrations will take place on the museum's pond in the morning and afternoon.

Children can jump and tumble in the bouncehouse, play at the museum's Tot Lot and Little Log Cabin. Families can go on an Adirondack scavenger hunt together . Kids can make believe with the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, and put on a skit for family and friends. Ther e will be costumed animal characters, face painting, arts & crafts and more.

Enjoy lunch at the museum's Lake V iew Café, and enjoy tasty tr eats like Ben & Jerry's ice cream and Indian Lake Theater popcorn. The museum is open May 27 thr ough Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, including holidays. Ther e will be an early closing on Aug. 12, and adjusted hours on Aug. 13; the museum will close for the day on Sept. 9. All paid admissions are valid for a second visit within a one-week period.

Indian Lake Central School was honored to host a recent visit from Marion Blumenthal Lazan, a Holocaust survivor and author of “Four Perfect Pebbles.” Students in grades six through 12 listened as Mrs. Blumenthal Lazan talked about her experiences during the Holocaust. Generally students read passages about this event or see movie clips, but this was something that each student will not soon forget.

Library makes summer plans JOHNSBURG — The T own of Johnsbur g Library has r eceived a grant fr om International Paper Company to increase their large type collection. Starting July 11 the library will be open Mondays in July and Aug from 9 a.m. to noon.

The library wants to invite kids to join in for the summer reading pr ogram. Prizes will be given out for books r ead each week. July 13 Bernadette Hof fman will be her e with "Our Natural Neighbors." She brings some of her wild friends with her . Do what is right To the News Enterprise: June 6 marked the 67th anniversary date of history’s lar gest land invasion of the German Fortress Europa—marking the beginning of the end of Nazi tyranny on the European continent.

Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Coast Guardsmen were an integral part of that victory—and our nation took immense pride in that success—yet it was some 58 years before those heroes were honored with their victory monument in our nation’s capital.

Many of those heroic Americans passed on befor e they would see their memorial—others today are too physically incapacitated to make the trip.

Certainly not a prideful story!

Today, we people of the North Country have an opportunity to do what is right—by petitioning those in authority—our r epresentatives—to please consider the following; The new r eplacement bridge spanning Lake Champlain between our New York state and the State of V ermont is slated for reopening October 9 this fall.

With our nation involved in multiple wars and especially the ongoing Global War on Terror—this event would signal a most appr opriate time to honor those who have served, sacrificed and

protected ours and the world’s fr eedom over the centuries—THE AMERICAN VETERAN—men and women— by naming the new structure “VETERANS MEMORIAL BRIDGE.” This is a one-time, unique opportunity to show our gratitude to those to whom we owe so much.

Many/most of our Greatest Generation have passed on already, at the rate of a thousand a day nationwide, the Korean War vets ar e in their eighties and others in their senior years—so time is of the essence.

We owe them our very existence and will never be able to fully r epay these fellow Americans who have pr otected our nation over the centuries.

Servicing our veteran community is a labor of love and r espect; I ask for your help in this worthwhile endeavor.

Communicate w ith y our n eighbors and your representatives—local, state and federal to implement this worthwhile proposal—it’s the right thing to do!

ne of my professors at ACC stated that the primary task of our public schools is to create good citizens. On June 14, Flag Day, Johnsburg’s kindergarten, first and second graders showed their patriotism by singing a number of songs about America and our flag.

I’m one of those folks who cry at parades. I don’t break down in spasm of sobbing, but a display of love of country leaves me choked up, and I need to brush away the stray tear. This was my reaction when I heard those young voices singing, “I’m proud to be an American, where at least I

t's been a wild orchid spring, the very best kind. We have about 50 species of native orchids in New York, and one alien, the most common one in our hardwood forests. Even the Adirondacks have 40. New York orchids are not the spectacular, long-lasting ones you can now buy in a store. Ours are fragile and short-lived, but admirable in their ability to get around to places they like on their own, with no help from humans.

Their seeds are as tiny as pollen, but when they get airborne they can often find a suitable bit of bare dirt with the right fungus in it to enable the nutrient-lacking bits of life to get started. Oddly, many species of orchid can live only in permanently wet, cold and acid places--sphagnum moss-covered bogs. Some of these wetlands have been around for 10,000 years, adding to their everlasting peat deposits since the glacier melted, and also providing the habitat for dozens of other plants.

Our earliest and delicate pink to magenta “dragon's mouth” (Arethusa) grows under such stringent conditions that no non-native plant can grow with them—one of the valuable features of peat bogs.

This year the Arethusa were not as numerous as usual— only 115 or so (who's counting? I, every year since I discovered this population). But even a single one is exquisitely gorgeous if the early sun is shining through the petals and you are looking at it emerging out of the sphagnum

The Flag Day ceremony is just one example of the many values and skill sets the youth of our community learn. As the school year draws to a close, the dedicated teachers who educate our children deserve our commendation for a job well done.

I also caught a few perfect yellow lady slippers this year, and the ubiquitous pink lady slippers. Then came the lovely pink and white showy orchids, which thrives in the backyard of our cabin and almost nowhere else in the Adirondacks.

Maybe the most spectacular spring orchid is the showy lady slipper, up to 32 inches tall, which grows only in calcareous wetlands such as white cedar swamps. Google “Saratoga woods and waterways” on June 15 to see great pictures of this rarity by Jackie Donnelly.

Rose pogonia, a small pink and white orchid also called “snake-mouth” for some silly reason, is lining the edges of the Hudson ice meadows below The Glen and almost every peat mat bordering our ponds.

One such error occurred last year when we opted to experiment with the physical size of three of our publications, converting them from our standard long tab format to shorter condensed flat tab format. It was an attempt to save both printing and postal costs while improving the design packaging of the information we send you each week. While the compact package has merits, we’ve come to realize it has not accomplished the intended results and in fact has limited our capability to bring you more news and information at a time when we’ve vowed to improve both. So in the next few weeks we’ll be converting the Burgh, North Countryman and Valley News back to our traditional long tab format.

In making all these tweaks to your community newspaper many of you have from time to time let us know your thoughts about the changes. I would like to encourage you to please continue to give your suggestions and guidance about how we deliver this information and what information we deliver. My only reminder is that while you may not like a feature or article, others may find great value in its availability. Our goal is to make certain everyone finds something of value worth reading in the paper. From time to time we’ll get complaints that we have too much sports coverage or they don’t see the value in the regional news, but we’ll get just as many comments on how others want more sports and suggestions that we quit publishing regional papers and instead produce one large product.

We know it’s nearly impossible to please everyone with everything we publish. But with your help and assistance we can continue to improve the papers and find the “just right” mix of news and information that fits your wishes.

So please keep sending your emails, tell us your thoughts, invite us to speak at your club or group meetings and we’ll do our very best to continue publishing these valuable, free community newspapers. And lastly, I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank those of you who’ve signed on to be volunteer subscribers to the papers. The financial support is greatly appreciated.

chids, some almost two feet tall, with many off-white, very long-spurred blossoms on a stalk. Some years, as is common with orchids, none of these show their heads, but all the rain this year must have agreed with them.

A few other beautiful orchids are still hiding in the moss or other damp places. Most of the rest are not very noticeable, being greenish or small-flowered. But I admire them all for their ability to get to where they need to be, show up year after year, and even thrive in what often seem to us like very harsh conditions. But like Br ’er Rabbit and his brier patch, home is where they are safe and happy!

2011 Minerva Youth Program set to begin July 5 and run through Aug. 12 MINERVA — The 2011 Minerva Youth Program will begin on Tuesday, July 5. The program takes place at Donnelly Beach on beautiful Minerva Lake fr om 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday for six weeks, ending on Friday, Aug. 12. During rainy days or times of sever e weather , Pr ogram campers will be transported by bus to Minerva Central School, where fun indoor activities will be available.

Campers should arrive between 9:45 and 10 a.m. at the Donnelly Beach pavilion, prepared for fun with a backpack that holds a sweatshirt, towel, quart water bottle, sunscreen, and lunch. Bathing suits can be worn beneath regular clothes or can be brought in the backpack.

Morning activities will generally include group games, hiking, canoeing, arts and crafts, and other similarly fun activities. Afternoon adventur es will include Red Cr oss sanctioned swimming lessons, fr ee swim time, and sailing lessons pr ovided by Ron Bruce of North Creek.

All kids who are residents of the Town of Minerva/Minerva Central School students may attend the pr ogram at no char ge.

Campers from out of town are welcome also, but there will be a tuition fee associated with their attendance. Campers who ar e going into kindergarten this coming fall ar e eligible (of course, older kids are eligible, too!).

Parents/guardians are encouraged to volunteer their time and shar e talents that would contribute to the campers’ having a great summer. Several day outings and campouts ar e planned for each of the camper groups, and parent/guardian volunteers are very welcome and encouraged to attend these activities.

Chief. Kerry is indeed being recognized for his volunteering service: “I’m just doing what I’m supposed to do”, he said. Joyce maintained that chiefs’ wives deserve recognition, too, with “all that time waiting up for the chief.”

Currently, Kerry is Chief of his department, staying active by r unning drills and responding to both emergency medical and fire emergencies. Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Kerry was an emergency medical technician, combining his fire-fighting service with his emergency medical skills. He would also become involved with area forest rangers in needed search and rescue efforts in the area; he’s got great stories about successfully pr edicting where lost hikers would likely turn up. He remembered helping searchers get a sense of how a lost hunter or hiker could panic at night. “We were at the Northwoods Club, looking for a lost hunter one night. I had my searchers turn out all their lights so we all could see how har d it would be for someone who is lost and panicking.”

Kerry and Joyce spent about the first eight of their 48 married years working as fire-watchers on area fire towers, including on Vanderwhacker, Adams and Goodnow Mountains. In fact, the fire-watcher cabin at Vanderwhacker in Minerva was their “honeymoon cottage” accor ding to Joyce. Both also worked to maintain the trails to the fire towers on these mountains. Joyce said their daughter Kim “loved being on Goodnow” as a kid.According to Kerry, from the Goodnow fire tower, “You could see deer swimming in Rich Lake, and on clear days could see the factory towers in Tupper Lake. It was beautiful.”

Kerry feels honored to be named Minerva “Citizen of theYear.” Kerry is serious about his continuing community volunteer efforts. He said that his Minerva Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad needs mor e volunteers. He acknowledges that it is “very tough to get people to make a serious volunteering commitment in terms of time and ener gy.” Nevertheless, volunteers such as Kerry are necessary to keep communities strong and healthy. Kerry Killon will be honored as Minerva Citizen of the Year during a ceremony at the opening of the Minerva Historical Society Museum at 2 p.m. on Minerva Day in Olmstedville, July 2.

LONG LAKE — Six noted artists will exhibit their works at the Cyber Cr eek Café in Long Lake this summer.

Starting July 19 and continuing through September 10, the art works of Robert Keough, William Kunzmann, Michael Terse, Barbara Keough, Glenn Miller and Sally Soper Neenan will be displayed.

The artists work in a number of different media, including: painting, fiber art, watercolors and digital photography and with a very wide range of styles.

Michael Terse is a nationally known photographer with works in major art museums across the country, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Eastman House in Rochester, NY and the Houston Art Museum, to name a few.

Robert Keough is an internationally recognized educator and pioneer in computer graphics education.

Glenn Miller creates landscapes and floral images in watercolors.

North Warren students earn regional award

thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — A gr oup of North Warren High School students inter ested in political science fr om North W arren High School have earned a pr estigious awar d from the Model Or ganization of American States or MOAS, an international pr ogram that promotes democracy.

Each year a class of North W arren High School students led by instr uctor Bernar d McCann participate in a college-level course involving MOAS. They are assigned a nation to represent at a model assembly held in a MOAS convention held at SUNY Plattsburgh.

These students travel to Washington, D.C. and meet with the ambassador of the country they represent. Then in June, they participate in the model assembly at SUNY Plattsburgh where for thr ee days each of the students fr om various participating high schools present resolutions on behalf of the country they r epresent. These r esolutions are defended and debated at this assembly.

At this year ’s MOAS assembly at SUNY Plattsburgh, the North Warren Class — representing Canada — was honored with a top award: “Most Diplomatic Delegation.”

The MOAS students were honored for this achievement at a picnic held June 14 by the Chestertown Rotary Club.

At the event, SUNY Professor Stuart Voss, who is in char ge of the MOAS pr ogram on behalf of the college, praised the North Warren students.

All the r esolutions they pr esented at the convention were approved by the assembly, Voss said.

“This demonstrates these students’ ability not just to push thr ough r esolutions but to listen to the other students and form consensus,” Voss said.

Chestertown Rotary of ficial David Schlansker added his praise.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment by the school and its students, considering North Warren has the smallest enrollment of the schools participating,” he said, giving credit to the faculty, particularly McCann.

The picnic, which included nearly 70

pupils, par ents and Rotarians, included local teenagers awarded as Rotary Students of the Month thr ough the 2010-11 school year.

Also honor ed wer e members of the Rotary student service or ganization Interact, and local teens involved in the Rotary club’s

leadership training pr ogram, Schlansker said.

“The North Warren community has gr eat reason to be very pr oud of all these students,” he said.

CHESTERTOWN — Nine ar ea youths, members of Warren County 4-H, attended a two-day 4-H Shotgun program held recently at the Chestertown Conservation Club.

The event was a success thanks to the support of volunteer instructors, helpful parents, and a grant from the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance, according to John Bowe of Warren County Cooperative Extension.

The first day’s session was dedicated to basic shotgun information such as action types, basic fir earms parts, and the fundamentals of safety , Bowe said. Instr uctors brought examples of semi-automatic, slide/pump action, lever action, br eak action, and bolt-action guns. Each type has preferred uses such as hunting upland birds or geese. Instr uctors included Kenyon Simpson of Bolton Landing, Gary Roberts of Chestertown, and Georg e Gedney of Queensbury.

The second session was held on a range. The range is closed and closely contr olled, Bowe said. Each participant was handed an unloaded fire arm with the safety features activated, then sent to the firing line thr ough a security gate. Instructors controlled ammunition and only provided it when shooters wer e at the shooting station and had followed r equired procedures. Eventually, the youths shot at moving clay targets.

Much of the equipment was pr ovided by the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance grants. All participants must be registered 4-H members to participate. The $5 fee for nonmembers includes a membership in W arren County 4-H and the pr ogram will likely have air rifle, rifle, and archery programs planned for the fall and winter. Chester Scouts are mentoring youth, boosting reading skills CHESTERTOWN — This year , members of Junior Girl Scout T roop 3030 will be combining community service and some mentoring experience as they earn the highest honor Junior Scouts can receive: the Bronze Award.

In pr eparation for the awar d, these fifthgrade Junior Scouts been leading the members of Daisy Girl Scout Troop 3408 — Kindergartners and first-graders — in various activities and conducting their meetings.

Also, they’ve spent time volunteering at the Share Center, a source of free household items for those in need, located beside the Chestertown United Methodist Church.

For their major project, the Junior Scouts decided to collect gently used childr en's books to donate to the bookshelf at the Hudson Headwaters Health Center in Chestertown —

where children will be prompted to take a free book home with them. The books will also be donated to Chestertown Head Start, the Town of Chester Library and the North W arren school library. Some of the books collected will be put into “tote” bags. Each bag will contain a gr oup of books with a theme such as trucks, dinosaurs, Junie B. Jones books, etc.

Each girl will also be reading and recording three Kinder garten or first-grade level volumes on CD as audiobooks. These ar e to be donated along with the companion book to the town and school libraries.

Adirondacks, in summer style

F

ollowing a prolonged, and snow covered, winter, which has been compounded by a record setting, rain soaked, spring; the summer season finally arrived on Tuesday, June 21.

Adirondack summers are likely the most fleeting of all our seasons. They occur as visitors and locals alike, join in an attempt to pack a year ’s worth of entertainment into just a few, short months.

As always, the season kicks off with high school graduations, and it departs with an exodus of part-time residents, summer folk and school bound, local kids.

However, sandwiched in between these predictable bookends, there is usually a whole lot of fun to be had, as the dog days of summer settle in.

An Adirondack summer offers a series of startling contrasts, where fun filled, hot, muggy days are often capped by bone chilling evenings, featuring brilliant, star dappled skies, where the silence is broken only by a crackling fire.

The stars appear to have fallen, as fireflies begin to flicker in the darkness, and the rising sun is often shrouded by the thick, morning’s mist of lake fog. Soon, the mist clears to reveal yet another brilliant blue sky, which ushers in another day in a secluded paradise of deep woods, still waters and soaring mountains.

Soon, long lines of tourists will clog country roads and Main Street as well, and yet solitude can still easily be found, over the nearest hill, at the local swimming hole or atop a lonely ridge.

Hikers will fill the trails, seeking just one more summit, and paddlers will put up with yet another carry, to find their own, Lost Pond.

Friends and family will begin visiting ‘Up North’ again and summer will be in full swing with clambakes and bar-b-ques, s’mores and county fairs.

Beaches will fill up and boaters will be everywhere, which makes it crucial to use

extra care. It is no wonder that we relish the season. It is a time that makes all of the other hardships bearable.

So get out and enjoy the summer today, and take a kid along for the ride! After all, summers are made for children, and best of all; they serve to bring out the kid in all of us.

Boats and safe boating, are no accident

The U.S. Coast Guard recently released the 2010 Recreational Boating Statistics, as part of their ongoing efforts to educate boaters and to prevent boating accidents.

The report indicates the total number of boating fatalities in 2010 dropped to 672, which is the lowest number on record.

Unfortunately, the majority of these fatalities were easily preventable. Seventy five percent of all boating accident victims drowned, and eighty eight percent of the victims, were not wearing a life jacket.

This single statistic illustrates the importance of wearing a life jacket. Despite training and/or physical condition, even the strongest swimmer cannot take a single stroke, if they are unconscious.

Waterproof your greatest investment! If you’re in a boat, strap one on! Drowning is the most preventable of all fatalities, yet it remains the most common!

Alcohol was the most commonly cited, contributing factor in a majority of boating accidents, and it was considered the leading factor in 19 percent of all reported fatalities.

Other preventable factors, ranked in order of importance include operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, and excessive speed.

Although boater education and life jackets are still the most important, life-saving tools available, boating under the influence remains one of the most difficult issues to address.

It is easy to understand. A cold beer on a hot day has long been considered a common ingredient of the recreational scene.

However, when mixing alcohol with crowded waters, big waves, strong winds and the hot sun; accidents happen. In fact, statistically, they occur about twenty percent of the time, in one out of every five outings.

Bishop wins Wilmington/Whiteface bicycle race qualifing event Chestertown’s Bob Olden finishes 44th WILMINGTON — Jeremiah Bishop of Harrisonbur g, Va. was the first rider to cr oss the finish line, taking top honors in the inaugural Wilmington/Whiteface 100K mountain bike race (WW100), held June 19, in Wilmington.

Bishop raced past the field of 231 cyclists in three hours, 33 minutes, 34.07 seconds.

Sunday’s 57-mile long, out and back race covering the towns of Wilmington, Jay, Keene and Lewis took the cyclists up and down Jay Mountain and Saddleback befor e returning to Whiteface wher e a 2,501 foot climb awaited for them before crossing the finish line.

The women’s field was led by Susan L ynch, (Medfield, Mass.).

JOHNSBURG — In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the U.S. Civil War, the Johnsburg Historical Society will debut an exhibit of photographs by Wevertown native and well-known photographer Mathew Brady at the Johnsbur g Library. The exhibit will be up from July through September.

Mathew Brady was a pioneering photographer cr edited with visually documenting one of the Country’s bloodiest and heart-wrenching wars. The vast majority of Civil War images that survive and ar e used to this very day were taken under his direction. While little is known about his early life, writer and researcher Glen Pearsall recently traced Brady’s r oots to Wevertown. Come learn how a man with local and modest beginnings became a legendary history maker.

The photographs showcased in this exhibit ar e copies of images in the archival collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the US NationalArchives- the largest depositories of Brady’s work.

The Brady exhibit is one of many activities that the Johnsburg Historical Society is hosting to r ecognize the anniversary of the war . Additionally, a commemorative sign near the birth place of Brady will be er ected this summer along with a dedication. In September, JHS and Glen Pearsall are hosting a joint pr ogram to honor Johnsbur g natives who fought in the war. More information on each of these pr ograms and will be published at a later date.
