Voters decide school budgets

lindsay@denpubs.com LONG LAKE — Long Lake and Raquette Lake recently came together and joined other local towns for the cause of taking pride in their communities. “The goal is to clean up area streets and roadways to gear up for the summer season,” said Alexandra Verner Roalsvig, director of Long Lake parks, recreation and tourism. Area businesses sponsored tee-shirts and the matching bodies were seen all over Long Lake pitching in to brighten their community. Participating businesses included: Eastern Star Abenaque Chapter #745, Hoss’s Country Corner, Shamrock Motel and Cottages, The Cellar, The Rock Shop, Kickerville Mobil Station, Moonlighters Snowmobile Club, and the Long Lake Diner and Owls Head Pub, Raquette Lake Property Owners Association, Great Camp Sagamore, Raquette Lake Tap Room and the WW Durant. In Long Lake, 14 volunteers collected more than 30 bags of garbage stretching from the highways that stretch throughout the town. A local business owner spoke of the importance of this gesture. “It’s an opportunity to extend a huge thanks to volunteers in the community,” said Jim Piraino. He and his wife Paula own The Long Lake Diner and Owls Head Pub. They were the first to volunteer to participate in Long Lake’s Community Pride Day in 2009, according to Roalsvig. “Last year there were only three of us,” said Paula Piraino. “It’s encouraging to

Minerva’s budget of $5.3 million passed with a 109 - 80 vote. Newcomb’s $4.9 million budget was passed by a 121-41 margin and their ballot proposition for a van purchase was approved 131 - 29. Robin DeLoria beat out Stacie McNulty for a seat on the Board of Education. Drew Cullen held on to his position on the board and received 112 unopposed votes. Long Lake voters approved a $3.6 million budget 231 - 113 and their ballot proposition to approve Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Library spending was voted down 188-159. Michael Nerney edged out Shawnee Ross for a position on the Board of Education 185 - 151. Indian Lake, a $5.8 million budget was passed 186 - 125 and Brian Wells received a write-in victory for a position on the Board of Education.

JOHNSBURG — Voters went to the polls Tuesday evening to decide the fate of local school budgets and Johnsburg Central School District voters decided the increase in their tax levy was not acceptable. Despite tireless efforts of the JCS Budget Committee in the previous weeks to shave budget increases and appeal to the public’s concerns, their $10 million budget was voted down by a significant margin 408 - 264. The ballot proposition of a school bus replacement was also voted down 338 - 298. The proposed budget included a .95 percent increase to the budget and and estimated 4 - 5

NORTH CREEK — Beloved Thomas the Tank Engine will roll into the The Upper Hudson River Railroad’s North Creek depot this weekend as part of “Day Out With Thomas: The Celebration Tour 2010,” presented by HIT Entertainment. Thomas will be in North Creek from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 22 and 23 and will return on May 29 and 30. Visitors will have the opportunity to take a 25minute ride with Thomas the Tank Engine, star of the “Thomas & Friends” series throughout the scenic Adirondack rail line. Children will also be excited to a chance to meet Sir Topham Hatt, Controller of The Railway. Various activities will be available including arts and crafts, storytelling, video viewing, live music and a celebration of Thomas turning 65. The series was first published in 1945. The tour has been chugging through North Creek for 15 years and also include stops in more than 45 U.S. cities. From year-to-year, the tour gives rides to more than one million passengers.
