Long Lake firefighter dies in car crash

By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com LONG LAKE — A local volunteer firefighter died here in a one-car accident in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 30. Thom Ross, 22, of Long Lake, was driving alone in his 2007 Ford Focus northbound on Deerland Road on State Routes 28/30, when his vehicle veered into the southbound lane, struck a snowbank, and flipped an unknown number of times. “The road where the accident occurred is a straight and level road,” said New York State Police Trooper Reinaldo Alvarez. “He may have veered into the other lane to miss a deer or an animal. We are not sure.” Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, Alvarez said, though the results of a blood alcohol test CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

ALBANY — State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli will launch a full financial audit of the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) after a report by his office found that financial issues persist at a time when its operations have been expanded to include the Catskills-based Belleayre Mountain Ski Center. “ORDA’s venues have long been an essential part of the North Country

economy, which heightens the need to ensure its stability and accountability to the public,” DiNapoli said. “We will examine selected financial management practices related to payroll, procurement and other areas.” DiNapoli’s “By the Numbers” ORDA report, released March 27, details operational losses and a reliance on a line of credit from a private bank, among other sources, to meet its spending needs.

ORDA’s primary revenue source is income from fees for skiing, skating and other activities. The authority was created in 1981 to operate Olympic venues in and around Lake Placid and now runs ski centers at Whiteface Mountain, Gore Mountain and Belleayre, as well as an Olympic ski jump and sports complex. It also hosts national and international sporting events. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

andy@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — When Adventure Cycling picked the route for 52-year-old Mark Mansell to take his cross-country bicycle trip through the Adirondack Park in August 2012, the company sent him along State Route 28N, through the towns of Long Lake and Newcomb. Traveling from Old Forge in the west to Ticon-

deroga in the east, this was the quickest route on paper. Many tourists who have never driven Route 28N probably make the same decision. After all, GPS gadgets don’t know the difference between a smooth road and a rough road. Route 28N is a rough road. “It’s an embarrassment,” Long Lake Town Supervisor Clark Seaman told Newcomb Planning Board member Paul Hai during an interview for his YouTube video highlighting the rough road conditions of Route 28N, especially the 13-mile section between Long Lake and Newcomb.

Hai released the video on Thursday, March 28, sending a YouTube link to as many people as he could, including media outlets in the Adirondack region and as far south as Albany. The News Enterprise quickly posted the link on its Facebook page and made a phone call to the New York State Department of Transportation office in Albany. The Times Union mentioned the video and posted a link on its Capitol Confidential blog. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
