lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Parts of Old River Road in North Creek were under water Thursday, March 10, forcing many residents to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. Melting snow and a day of rain caused water to rise in the Hudson River, but was blocked by an ice pack, pushing the water onto roads and above flood levels. After a declared state of emergency by Supervisor Sterling Goodspeed, North Creek volunteer firefighters shuttled local residents from their homes to several locations. The Alpine Lodge and Inn on Gore Mountain offered a free night of stay for those displaced by the flooding, although it was reported the displaced were staying with friends and family. Seven homes were evacuated and many occupants were staying with other area residents, as rooms in local hotels began to fill for another ski weekend at Gore Mountain.

The ice pack, viewed from the 28N bridge over the Hudson R iver, has caused sig nificant flooding on Old R iver Road in North Creek and forced many local residents from their homes.

Couple opens WD’s Country Store in Newcomb By Lindsay Yandon

lindsay@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — During the decade and a half that the former Winebrook Market on Adams Lane in Newcomb had been closed, it has changed hands twice and now reopens as WD’s Country Store. Warren Kirby and Donna Draper, whose first initials make up the name of the store, purchased the building last April and finished renovations in preparation for their grand opening, which took place Monday, March 7. Despite a snowstorm that dumped close to two feet of snow on Newcomb March 6 and 7, the grand opening went smoothly, said Draper. Customers trickled in for free coffee and to celebrate the presence of another business within the town’s lines. Last year, Kirby was traveling for work and his job brought him out of state often. He and Draper began looking for a source of income a little closer to home and purchased the store soon afterward. WD’s joins Bissell’s Store and the Northwoods Diner and General Store in provideing Newcomb residents as well as residents with groceries and other services. Historically, WD’s was owned by the Sweet family and offered a grocery store and deli to the town of Newcomb for roughly 13 years. The building was moved via truck to Newcomb

from Tahawus in the early 1960s. The history of the building still plays a major roll in its business. Customers are welcomed by the store’s original sign hanging on the wall amidst Adirondack decor. Draper remembers visiting local stores as a young girl to buy pieces of candy for a penny. She will continue this tradition and offer penny candy for local children at WD’s. Draper will also sell dairy, seasonal, automotive, coffee, and health and beauty products. She hopes to have a deli, offering subs, sandwiches and soups by the start of summer. She is optimistic about what the tourist season will bring. “We are the first thing people see when they enter town,” she said. “We are hoping that is a positive thing for us. Businesses have struggled to stay afloat in recent years in the town of Newcomb. Despite the presence of two other stores in Newcomb, Draper is confident that they will each target a different group of locals as well as visitors and tourists and succeed. Dedicated to being a local family business, Draper and Kirby hope to serve their local community with delivery services to the elderly and those who cannot venture from their homes during the winter months. “It as all come together and we are really excited,” said Draper. “We are hoping for a great summer season.”
