APA helps Indian Lake with grocery store study

NORTHERN NEEDLES
This Week ELIZABETHTOWN IN INDIAN LAKE
By Andy Flynn andy@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — Adirondack Park Agency (APA) staff recently completed a marketing study that could help the town of Indian Lake attract a grocery store chain. And the most likely prospects are IGA and Big M. It’s been more than three years since the Indian Lake Market opened as an IGA affiliate in 2005 after Tops Friendly Markets closed. That left the community without a supermarket. Locals can get some food items at smaller stores such as the Stewart’s Shops and Adirondack One Stop convenience stores but have to travel to North Creek’s Grand Union about 20 miles to the east or Charlie Johns General Store (Big M) in Speculator about 24 miles to the south to get more substantial groceries. Enter Dan Kelleher, APA special assistant for economic affairs and one-man operator of the Agency’s Economic Services Unit. He’s been on the job for a little over a year, and handed economic development leaders in Indian Lake and Hamilton County the Indian Lake Grocers Analysis in December. He compiled the report with help from the APA’s Local Government Services Unit staff so Indian Lake can use it to attract a new grocery store. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

The Northern Needles Fabric Arts group from Long Lake has completed 24 fleece lap blankets that have been donated to Mercy Health Care nursing home in Tupper Lake and High Peaks Hospice. The group holds all-day work sessions each second and fourth Wednesday at St. Henry's Parish Center, Long Lake. In addition to working on their own quilting and needlework, each year they complete a service project to benefit a local charity. Pictured with the completed blankets are (from left in the back) Lorraine Pine, Jackie Mallery and Dona Hall. In the front is Barbara Keough. Photo provided

Moriah edges Lady Orange in playoffs By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com CLINTONVILLE — In a rare matchup between two defending Section VII champions, the former Class C champ used a strong press to wear down the defending D champ. The Moriah Lady Vikings outscored the Indian Lake/Long Lake Lady Or-
ange 13-3 in the final eight minutes of the game to score a 34-30 win in the sectional semifinal round Feb. 26 at AuSable Valley High School. "I thought that they did a great job," Vikings head coach Steve Pelkey said after the game. "I knew that they were not deep and we tried to wear them out as the game went on. Defensively, we picked up the intensity in the second half."
"We starting switching on their screens defensively and stepped up the intensity," Madison Stahl said. "We started running a lot more in the second half." The Vikings entered the third quarter trailing 27-21 after falling behind by as many as nine points late in the third quarter before Pelkey hit a three-pointer late in the stanza. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6
