4-H features archery for local youth WARRENSBURG — Warren County 4-H Shooting Sports program will be conducting a 4H archery program on Thursday, Feb. 3, 10, and 17 at 6 p.m. Children 9 years and over will learn all fundamental safety steps for handling a bow. Bows, arrows, tabs, arm guards, and targets will be provided for this event. All participants must be registered 4-H members to participate for insurance purposes. There is a $5 fee for non-members, which includes a membership in Warren County 4-H. Class is limited to 18 youth. Pre-register by calling 623-3291 or 668-4881. Location to be announced.
Long Lake welcomes Chocolate Festival LONG LAKE — The Long Lake Town Hall will host an evening of chocolate desserts at 7 p.m., Jan. 29. Community members will have the opportunity to sample a wide array of delectable treats and vote for the best ones. Anyone is welcome to submit a chocolate dessert for judging. County public defender pleads for more help By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Essex County Public Defender Brandon Boutelle begged supervisors Monday, Jan. 10 for more help as the number of cases moving through his office annually continue to rise. Boutelle told the county’s Public Safety Committee that in 2010 he and his lone assistant handled a whopping 958 cases – about 85 percent of the total number opened in the county. According to Boutelle, area judges – like Essex County Court Judge Richard Meyer – have begun noticing a decline in the level of representation defendants are receiving. “He thought that we were getting to the point where our caseload is starting to affect our ability to provide

Gas pumps return to Newcomb after 20 years By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — After a dry spell of roughly 20 years, gas has returned to the town of Newcomb with the reopening of Northwoods Diner and General Store. Joe Garvilla of Newcomb assumed ownership of the diner after it changed hands a couple times over the past several years. Garvilla signed a three year lease with an option to buy in October of 2009. The doors reopened last
June to offer Newcomb an eat-in dining option, to supplement the grocery sales of Bissell's Store and to reintroduce Cedar Pond Camp Ground to the local community. Gas pumps were installed this fall and are now operational. Managed by Heidi and Craig Plumley, the Northwoods Diner and General Store had a busy summer — a fact the Plumley’s hope continues through the winter. Historic Hubbard Hall burns in early morning blaze By Keith Lobdell keith@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The early morning sunrise here was blacked out by deep plumes of grey smoke as crews battled a blaze that completely enveloped historic Hubbard Hall on Elizabethtown’s Main Street. The fire began at approximately 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, and was being fought by firemen from the Elizabethtown, Lewis, Whallonsburg, Wadhams, Westport and Keeseville Volunteer Fire Departments, along with standby assistance from the Mineville, Willsboro and Reber Volunteer Fire Companies. the efforts of firefighters as the mercury dipped to near zero. Water turned almost immediately to ice, which caked to the walls of the structure as the persistent flames raged on inside. Also on-scene were New York State Police and Essex County Sheriffs officers, with fire police blocking traffic along Main Street at the intersections of Water Street and High Street. Those making their normal morning commute to school and to work at the county office buildings were re-rerouted around the area to Route 9N.
