Following what many locals believe was the harshest winter in recent memory, summer is finally upon us. With it, the pace here in the North Country quickens. The region is flooded with a mix of seasonal residents and tourists; beaches teem with pale skinned bathers and merchants smile wide to the sound of cash registers singing. At the same time, opportunities for both outdoor and indoor recreation increase dramatically, as this edition of North Country Living reflects.

T

he summer of 2014 marks the bicentennial of the historic Battle of Plattsburgh of the War of 1812. In early and mid-September, the City of Plattsburgh commemorates 200 years of peace with a series of special events, historic reenactments and culinary delights (see sidebar). The New York event is also linked to the city of Vergennes, VT, where the ships of the Lake Champlain-phase of the U.S. land and naval battle victory were built and launched.

There is no easy recounting of the War of 1812 that led to the decisive victory of U.S. forces on and along Lake Champlain at Plattsburgh, NY, Sept. 6-11, 1814.

According to Brian McKenna, director of an award-winning Canadian documentary film about the conflict, “The War of 1812 was the war that sealed the destiny of North America. A

A Second War of Independence

After 1783, Congress believed both England and France were violating the fledging nation’s maritime neutrality. Americans focused resentment on British naval policies because the Royal Navy overwhelmingly commanded the seas. Another irritant was the fact the Royal Navy claimed a bogus legal and moral right to board U.S. merchant ships and remove runaway British sailors onboard.

Many of His Majesty’s sailors were only too happy to jump ship and join American merchantmen to escape brutal living conditions onboard British ships. During numerous belligerent boarding raids of US ships, armed British agents seized

American sailors. This practice, called impressment, fueled American anger against the British.

Despite firm moral reasons for the US declaration of war, there was widespread anti-war sentiment especially among New Englanders. Many Vermonters found “lofty” reasons to oppose the war, but their arguments were weak considering they were the prime suppliers of fresh beef to the British Army in Quebec.

A9 A Fight on Land and Lake

Considered by many historians to be the decisive battle of the War of 1812, the Battle of Plattsburgh was a two-prong fight on land and lake.

On land, Canadian Governor General Sir George Prevost led a force of over 9,000 soldiers into New York. The US Northern Army, numbering 1,700 infantry and 2,500 Vermont volunteers, was under the command of Brigadier General Alexander “Alex” Macomb. Commanding Major General George Izard was hastily ordered to march 4,000 troops to western New York territory a few weeks prior to the battle. Izard reluctantly handed over command to Macomb on Aug. 27, 1814.

After Izard departed, Macomb resumed fortification of the outskirts of Plattsburgh and waited.

Meanwhile, to counter a squadron of British warships, led

by Commander George Downie and sailing down the Richelieu River from Canada onto Lake Champlain, US Commander Thomas Macdonough hastily constructed a fleet of warships near the mouth of Otter Creek in Vermont. A small lakeshore redoubt near the Otter’s mouth, dubbed Fort Cassin, protected Macdonough’s upstream shipyard, located below the falls at Vergennes.

considered secession. However, when the call-to-arms came to defend Plattsburgh, volunteers from Vermont put politics and business interests aside and joined the fight against the British.

At the start of 1814, nine months before the resounding US victory at Plattsburgh, the mood in Washington DC was gloomy.

It appeared that the nation would lose the war by spring. This possibility distressed President James Madison and his hawkish supporters because with no means to stop a British invasion, vast tracts of the northern frontier would likely fall to BritishCanadian forces.

In the spring of 1814, the buoyant British were already making plans for the future of the Champlain Valley territory, a region they were confident of seizing in the coming months. This vast tract of real estate, lost by Britain in the last war, would become a new Canadian province named British Columbia. However, after the British burned Washington, in the late summer of 1814, the paper province of Columbia vanished in the gun smoke of the Battle of Plattsburgh.

A Line of Forts

In May 1814, work on US forts Moreau, Brown and Scott in the Plattsburgh area, and two nearby blockhouses, were underway.

Izard dispatched 200 soldiers to build a log-and-earth fort on high ground near the point of Cumberland Head northeast of Plattsburgh. Named Fort Izard, the four-bastioned breastwork was short-lived and abandoned by early September 1814.

When Macomb took command of the Northern Army, he was pleased with the work, already underway, at the Plattsburgh forts.

In April 1814, Capt. Joseph Totten, U.S. Army engineer, was put in charge of fort construction at Plattsburgh while Col. John Fenwick oversaw the construction crews.

Rocket’s Red Glare

The land battle at Plattsburgh raged, off and on, from Sept.

6-11, 1814. The Americans centered their position at the three forts on the Saranac-Champlain peninsula. An early attempt by the British to cross the Saranac was thwarted at the Bridge Street Bridge.

West of the peninsula forts, the Americans held the British by removing the deck planking on the Catherine Street Bridge. Here, the Americans also took out British snipers along the riverbanks. In occupied Plattsburgh, the fire fight triggered a downtown conflagration. American “hot shot,” fired from batteries in front of the forts, destroyed homes and the courthouse on Margaret Street.

A10 on the American forts in anticipation of the big British fleet to back him up. In the end, the final assault on the forts never took place. A resounding British defeat on water eclipsed what might have been a marginal British victory on land.

The smaller American sailing fleet under the command of Macdonough-aboard the 734-ton, 210-crew flagship U.S.S. Saratoga-handily defeated the larger British fleet led by Downie’s ocean-capable 1,200-ton, 300-crew flagship H.M.S. Confiance.

As a result of the surprise, American naval victory, within view of both American and British ground force, the land battle phase ended abruptly.

Because of the magnitude of the naval victory, it is Macdonough, not Macomb, which history remembers as the savior of New York and Vermont from the hands of British invaders.

Near Broad Street, British batteries employed Congreve rockets, a new battlefield weapon in North America, to attack the American forts.

The fin less rockets were simple metal tubes, packed with gunpowder, with small explosive nose cones. An artillery soldier could easily carry several 12-pound Congreve weapons in the field. The rockets were launched via a common tube mounted on a portable tripod; some were mounted on ships. While the rocket was formidable to American soldiers at Plattsburgh, a single 32-pound Congreve rocket could travel a distance of three miles, it was wildly erratic and rarely hit the intended target.

American Legerdemain

During the whole course of the land battle phase, Macomb engaged in psychological warfare. He smartly moved his outnumbered troops around the Saranac-Champlain peninsula in a clever shell game. The movements fooled the British into thinking either more Americans had arrived or the force in place was greater than previously thought. He also spread rumors, carried by suspected spies, that 10,000 militia were concealed in the woods. Ahead of time, and knowing the British were watching him from the center of Plattsburgh, Macomb concealed all roads to the main forts with evergreen plantings and leaves. From across the river, the British had a difficult time figuring out how the Americans were servicing the forts.

Eyes on Lake Champlain

Even as the land battle continued, it seemed that the Americans might be defeated. But by Sept. 11, all eyes were focused on Lake Champlain.

Having waited five days for Downie, the British expected the fleet to command the lake and assure the free flow of needed supplies to sustain the invasion. Prevost delayed a direct assault

Zebulon Montgomery Pike Jr. (later of Pike’s Peak fame) was a U.S. Army captain at this military encampment. A dig will continue throughout the summer of 2014 and beyond.

Vermont’s Second City

T

here are 11 Rutlands across the United States, but none quite like Rutland, Vermont. Despite recent news coverage, the nearly 17,000 people who call it home know there’s much more to the city than meets the eye.

In the past year, Rutland has become a dining hub for Southern Vermont, giving people food to talk about. Despite being the state’s second largest city, several parks and fields provide solitude from the fast pace of city living. With live theatre and concerts from the nation’s top musical performers, there’s always something to discover in Rutland.

Downtown Rutland Unlike many smaller cities, Rutland has managed to keep their downtown alive, attracting thousands of visitors with a rich mix of dining, retail, and nightlife. Downtown also hosts several events throughout the summer, including Summerfest and Friday Night Unplugged.

Downtown Rutland is also home to one of the largest and most diverse farmers’ market in Vermont on Tuesdays and Saturdays

through October. Located in Depot Park, nearly 60 vendors offer fresh fruit and vegetables, plants and flowers, fresh breads, and mouth-watering desserts. Looking for something unique when you visit? Try Sugar Bee’s Bakery. Owner Amanda Barrett uses fresh, local ingredients to make creative delicacies from scratch like lemon lavender scones, mini pielets, and cookie combinations like cranberry- apricot oatmeal raisin. Looking for something gluten free? Try the Bomoseen Bread Basket. Diane McCoy offers pies, cupcakes, and various breads.

After the market, walk down Center Street and Merchants Row to visit the area’s retail locations. Book King first opened in 1971 and is one of the city’s only remaining bookstores. At Fruition or Raw Honey Apparel, both owned by Rebecca Buonadonna, local creations meet trendy styles from New York, Boston, and beyond.

Have children? Visit Wonderfeet Children’s Museum and challenge them to discover the world in new ways. The Green Mountain Power Energy Innovation Center’s mission is educating children and adults alike on the value of renewable energy through interactive exhibits, including the Electra the talking cow.

If you’re hungry after experiencing downtown, Rutland has whatever you desire any time of the day.

Food for Thought If you come to Rutland and don’t eat, it’s a shame since the city has some of the best dining establishments in the region.

When Roots opened in 2011, chef and owner Donald Billings’ mission was to create delicious food using fresh ingredients. Now, the restaurant offers affordable meals from minimally processed, local food from Alchemy Gardens, Boardman Hill Farm, Hathaway Farm, Neshobe Emu Farm, Thomas Dairy, Yoder Farms, and more. The localvore hotspot features take-out for lunch and dinner, as well as outdoor seating during the summer. For dinner, try the chicken and dumplings or beet salad. The roasted turkey sandwich, complete with apples, onions and cranberry-sage aioli is mouthwatering. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Chimi

Just across the street is Table 24, which features the distinctive flavor of wood-fired cooking. Their unique menu consisting of “locally sourced upscale comfort food” includes prime rib egg rolls and wood-fired asparagus is the restaurants recipe for success, according to chef and owner Stephen Sawyer.

Rutland’s first brew pub, Hop N’ Moose Brewing Co., opened in March. With 16 beers on tap and their own brews as well, you’re sure to find something. While the food menu more limited than their taps, the wood-fired pizza is some of the best in town.

If you’re looking for something else, try Kelvan’s, the Palms, Sal’s, Griffins. Wherever you end up, you won’t be disappointed.

For breakfast, try Vermont Sugar and Spice. Technically, it’s in neighboring Mendon, but don’t let the short drive deter you. The family owned and operated restaurant serves both breakfast and lunch in an authentic sugar house. Today, the deli is still family owned and operated, serving thousands of visitors each year. There’s also Big Lenny’s Hot Dogs. Local legend Lenny Montuori has been serving delicious food at his roadside stand on Route 7 since 1988. Besides getting a good dog for a good price, you’ll get a good conversation.

Tucked away in the northwest corner of Rutland is Pine Hill Park. The 300-acre park features a 16-mile single-track trail system, offering the best hiking, running, and walking in Southern Vermont. Walk your dog up to Rocky Pond or enjoy the summit view on Droopy Muffin, the 1920s rock quarry in the northeast corner of the park. It’s a view of Rutland you simply can’t find many other places.

The Paramount Theatre also proves that Rutland isn’t only a great place to live, but also to play. The theatre sat empty and neglected for nearly a decade before it was reopened in 2000. Now, the establishment welcomes some of the most popular musicians, including Johnny Popper of the Blues Travelers, Ziggy Marley, and an acoustic Melissa Ethridge solo concert this summer. The theatre also shows professional athletic games and Live in HD Met performances following the installation of its high definition screen and audio system last year.

With world-class dining, successful retail establishments, and outdoor activities for any nature lover, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re enjoying a homemade grinder from Gills or escaping the fast-pace of the city at Pine Hill Park, there’s always an opportunity to discover, thrive and grow in Rutland.

A Chesterfield Museum tells the intriguing story of the role the Champlain Valley played in the abolitionist movement of the 1800s

ill Sackett, a docent for the North Star Underground Railroad Museum, recently took this reporter on a private tour of sites in Keeseville and Peru that are significant to abolitionist history. The museum opened for its fourth season on May 3, and offers similar tours to the

public, the dates for which are available on the institution’s website.

Sackett, who has always been a history buff, said he has been a guide for the museum for approximately three years.

“Some of my friends that were docents before me told me about it,” he said. “And

“Lansing’s house was in this vicinity on the hill,” Sackett said. “We have an oral history of it... freedom seekers and citizens who thought the same as he, who were anti-slavery, were welcome at his table.”

The next stop was the United Methodist

Church in Keeseville. This was where the abolitionist Rev. Andrew Witherspoon was put on trial by his bishop and clergy in the area for his anti-slavery views, according to Sackett. The Rev. Merritt Bates, also an abolitionist, was affiliated with this church.

In the area, according to Sackett, slavery became such “a controversial topic, that after 1842, none of the

churches would allow abolitionist lecturers to speak from their pulpit.”

These lecturers would often have to go to Quaker gatherings in Peru to speak.

Further in the tour, we visited the Keeseville Masonic Lodge, which was once home to the local Congregational Church.

of harboring fugitive slaves in it over the years,” Sackett said.

Later we stopped at a Peru residence where John Lecky found a leg iron underneath the floorboards in 1970. He would later donate it to the North Star Underground Railroad Museum, where it’s a centerpiece, Sackett said.

The final stop on the tour was the Quaker Stephen Keese’s homestead, currently owned by Frank Perusse.

Museum officials suspect that a barn on the property was used to hide fugitive slaves.

“Periodically they’ll have an archeological dig,” Sackett said.

“People from Plattsburgh State college will come down here and dig up some stuff.” But so far these researchers have not discovered anything that would point definitively to whether this location was used to shelter runaway slaves.

A little over a week later, Charles Crowningshield and Peter Slocom, both docents and museum board members, showed this reporter around the North

Star Underground Railroad Museum itself, which is located at 1131 Mace Chasm Road, in Chesterfield.

“So the house here, while an old house, is not an actual Underground Railroad site,” Slocom said. “A lot of folks who come in are surprised by that.

But we had this wonderful partnership between Ausable Chasm and the town of Chesterfield that got us this wonderful building. Then we used volunteers and grants to fix it up. But it was actually built after the Civil War.” An important part of the tour is a short documentary focused on an escaped slave who lived in the Adirondack area.

“It’s about a slave by the name of John Thomas who escaped from the Maryland area and eventually made his way to Lake Placid, Bloomingdale, where he became a successful farmer,” Crowningshield said. “And he met a wealthy landowner up there by the name of Gerrit Smith.

they were worth millions and millions of dollars. Eventually they gave it all away.

He gave over 120,000 acres of his land to 3,000 African-American slaves.”

Thomas’ history, like a lot of the information available at the museum, was unearthed through local initiative.

“That’s a story, like a lot of the stories here, that has come up through individual research that people have done, in particular Don Papson, our founding president, who found the letter in the library and unearthed that story and then found relatives of John Thomas,” Slocom said.

Slocom said that one of the important facets of the museum in Ausable Chasm was that it highlighted the Champlain Line of the Underground Railroad, which was little known. “Most people knew that Harriet Tubman took escaping slaves out to Niagra Falls and then over to Ontario there,” Slocom said. “And she of course settled in Auburn, Central New York. A19 Slocom said it was unlikely that the Underground Railroad included stops in Lake Placid.

“There’s a lot of talk about of the relationship to John Brown, of course our most famous abolitionist here in New York,” Slocom said. “But it’s unlikely that many people went over to John Brown’s farm by Lake Placid, just because that travel through the High Peaks of the Adirondacks didn’t make much sense.

If your goal is Canada, it doesn’t make much sense to detour through Mt. Marcy.”

Slocom emphasized that while opposition to slavery seems like a moral no-brainer today, it was a controversial stand in the 1800s.

“People were chased out down in Westport. There were people throwing tomatoes at speakers. So it was not, by any means, a non-controversial business.

romantic, idealistic way, that people stood up and helped the slaves. But in fact that was controversial at the time. Because a lot of people felt that the abolitionists were taking such an extreme stand against slavery that they were in effect driving the country apart and leading to civil war.”

The museum is open from the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in October, seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum opens during the off-season by appointment.

A

typical cupcake is no more than two inches wide and three inches tall—an impressively small size for something that has launched a new craze when it comes to weddings, birthday parties, and other festivities. And if you didn’t love the sweet treats before, you will after trying Snowflake Cupcakes.

The Rutland, VT, company debuted its creations at the Vermont State Fair two years ago. Since then, the company has grown leaps and bounds to include a cupcake cafe and selections at bridal shows across the state.

Snowflake Cupcakes was born at the Oscars (Well, not exactly “there,” but from a couch in Rutland). Amy Jackson and Carol Petitbon met four years ago. Besides sharing mutual friends, the two women also shared a mutual love of being in the kitchen. So while watching the Oscars, the two women began brainstorming things they could do together. Petitbon, who works at Mr. Twitter’s, suggested they start a cupcake business. She recognized the need in the community for a place for brides and everyone else to order quality, upscale cupcakes for their special event, she said. After thinking about it, the duo pushed forward.

Since both women have full-time day jobs, Jackson and Petitbon began working nights, testing their creations and getting lessons from Petitbon’s father Charles, who is a pastry chef and has owned several bakeries. When he learned that Jackson had never made frosting from scratch, he stepped in and gave the women advice not only in baking, but in running a successful business as well.

Not every cupcake in the beginning made the cut. Petitbon and Jackson both have extremely high standards when it comes to their products and strive to produce the perfect cupcake. So they tested recipes, decorating techniques, and had their friends act as taste testers before agreeing on a menu.

Now, the women still bake at night, but have learned to separate tasks as more orders came in. Both women do the baking, while Jackson makes the frosting and Petitbon decorates, garnishes, and makes the cupcake fillings for their standard or mini sized creative delicacies. Beyond the flavors, the women focus on creatively naming their products as well. What’s in a cupcake name, anyway?

Many of the treat’s names come from their home state, like the Vermonter (Maple Cupcake with Maple Butter Cream Frosting – Ask for “Country Style” and they’ll add Bacon), Moguls, Double Black Diamond (Decadent Chocolate Cupcake with Dark Chocolate Butter Cream Frosting), and the Longer Trail. just for fun, like the Flatlander (Classic Yellow Cupcake with Dark Chocolate Butter Cream Frosting), Maine Squeeze, and Jackson’s favorite, the Sassy Girl (Raspberry Filled Chocolate Cupcake with Chocolate Raspberry or Vanilla Raspberry Butter Cream Frosting).

The women also offer seasonal flavors, like the Sand Castle, a Pina Colada Cupcake with Pineapple Butter Cream frosting, in the summer months and the leaf peeper, an Autumn Spiced Cupcake with Vanilla Cream Cheese frosting and a Chocolate Maple Leaf, in the fall.

More important than a name is what’s in the cupcake. The women pride themselves on the ingredients they use. Petitbon and Jackson bake their cupcakes from scratch daily, without any preservatives or additives. They use only butter and everything is measured out by hand. They also try to source their ingredients from local companies, including local eggs, Cabot Butter, Thomas Dairy Milk, and King Arthur Flour. The women are currently working on testing sugar free, gluten free, and vegan desserts and look forward to offering them to customers when they reach the perfection of every other cupcake on the shelves.

The women have made their cupcakes available so you don’t have to wait for that special occasion to get your hands on one.

Jackson and Petitbon also donated over $2,500 worth of product last year and were part of a Relay for Life team to raise money and awareness for cancer.

The women provide sweets for a wide range of gatherings, from baby showers to birthday parties, graduations, bachelorette parties, and much more. Their biggest success comes from weddings though.

Mary Leonard Landenberger Rhythm of life and nature offer inspiration for Warrensburg artist’s work Story and photos by Thom Randall

P

erched on a stool in Riverside Gallery, Mary Leonard Landenberger pulled and twisted wool in her fingers during a break from arranging some of her fiber art and pottery for display.

The woolen “roving” she was creating would someday soon be worked into the fabric of one of her wearable felt art creations, she said. The wool was shorn from ‘Zipper,” one of the sheep she’s raised, and it would be blended into other fibers in one of her art scarves, she said.

“It will serve as a memorial to him — It’s nice to have his wool and have him still with me,” she said. “It’s about changing energy — Life goes on.”

Not long afterwards, Landenberger was in a pasture, feeding two of her sheep, then cuddling a one-day-old baby chick she adopted after its mother abandoned it. Later, she was in her studio, molding a ceramic bowl on a potters wheel. Finishing her work, she reviewed the progress of the plants growing her garden. Soon after, she chased her large pet turtle Corrina through a field.

Like many other artists in the Adirondacks, the rhythm of nature serves as a source of artistic inspiration for Landenberger, she explained as she pursued her day’s activities.

A Warrensburg resident who grew up on the east shore of Lake George, she is an avid kayaker, swimmer, hiker, wanderer, animal nurturer, amateur naturalist, sustainability enthusiast, gardener — and artist.

Whether it’s a rushing stream, a vivid sunset, autumn leaves scattered in the woods, streaks of mineral deposits in a rock, or the morning mist rising off a remote pond, Landenberger subliminally absorbs the beauty — and the colors, textures and forms she witnesses influence her artwork, she said.

For decades, her artistic vision has been developed through both formal studies and sharing ideas with artists and artisans in the Adirondacks, Glens Falls and Saratoga areas, she said.

Her formal involvement in art had its roots in a 1979 road trip to Montana, which led to her taking classes at the University of Montana, taught by famed sculptor and ceramic artist Rudy Autio. His elaborately etched, free-flowing ceramic works are in prestigious collections and renowned museums in the U.S. and abroad.

“He was one of the ‘greats,’ but I had no idea at the time,” she said, noting that after the formal courses under Rudio, he continued to be an influence, as they both worked out of the same campus studios for the following 15 years.

“Rudy was this wonderful father figure — He embraced the whole community and welcomed his students into his heart and home. ” She also cited ceramic artists Beth Lo and David Regan as influences — Landenberger took classes with Lo and shared a studio with Regan, a friend, who is well-known for his elaborate etched porcelain forms and tiles.

Landenberger moved back to Lake George in 1994, and soon after took painting classes instructed by Mark Walp and Katie DeGroot at SUNY Adirondack.

Beginning in 1996, Landenberger studied ceramics with renowned sculptor Regis Brodie at Skidmore College. Both Landenberger’s felt art and her pottery show influences of both Autio’s figurative etchings in ceramic and Brodie’s free-wheeling, mesmerizing layered glaze abstractions. They also reflect her interest in both classic and Japanese art.

A25 Brodie advised her to study Art Education at St. Rose College, which she did, pursuing a Master’s degree, while her studio work continued with Brodie.

In the 1990s, she connected with dozens of artists working in various media, and served on the Lake George Arts Project board of directors in the late 1990s.

Moving forward on her winding life’s path, Mary married Warrensburg veterinarian Brian Landenberger in 1999, and she helped raise his son.

For Christmas 2000, Brian gave her a pregnant ewe named Zoey, which bore two lambs, Zipper and Zorro. Landenberger began spinning the wool shorn from her sheep, weaving various clothing items — and Zipper, Zorro and other sheep Brian and she raised provided plenty of wool for her practical as well as artistic work in fabric.

In the 2000s, she also enjoyed sculpting ceramics on a potter’s wheel on their porch, as well as tending her garden nearby. In addition to the sheep, Brian and Mary raised chickens and ducks, a pig, cockatiels — and iguanas adopted through her husband’s veterinary practice.

Although immersed in home life, Landenberger joined the group Serendipity Spinners, led by Carol Gregson of Chester, as well as continuing to spend time with various artists in the region.

In 2012, Brian bought her a felt art scarf created by Marjolaine Arsenault, and this wearable art — as well as a felt art show at the LARAC Gallery in Glens Falls — sparked Mary’s passion for her work in felt, he said.

Since then, she’s explored a variety of materials and techniques,

sharing time and ideas with other artists, developing her own skills.

Landenberger talked modestly about her own creations, while praising the work of acclaimed felt artists Robin Blakney-Carlson at the Shirt Factory artists complex in Glens Falls and Marjolaine Arsenault who lives in Chestertown and maintains a studio in North Creek. She also noted the artwork of Jeanne Noordsy, Carol and Annie Gregson, and others.

“We’re all inspired by nature and each other, it’s very supportive and collaborative,” she said, noting that Reiki is also a major element of her life.

As she finished molding a clay vessel, she said she wasn’t quite sure where her life was headed — she might become a Reiki master, or she might launch a community art studio, as one of her mentors, ceramic artist Beth Lo predicted decades ago.

“Wouldn’t that be lovely if that is where all this is headed?” she asked.

he Keeseville of the 1880s was very different from what exists today. The automobile was still in the early development stage and far from ready for mass production. Horse and buggy or cart were the main modes of transportation other than railroad.

This posed a problem for the major manufacturers of Keeseville.

The Keeseville of the 1800s offered a booming industry for iron and lumber from the natural raw materials available and the powerful force of the Ausable River to power the equipment needed to refine the raw goods. It was incredibly easy to produce large quantities of iron and wood. Factories ran along the Ausable River and pathway to Plattsburgh that processed the raw material into Horse Nails, Paper and wood planks among other goods. The problem was the weight. Iron, wood and paper are not light. It was incredibly arduous work for horses to pull the heavy loads away from Keeseville which took a tremendous amount of time, and time meant money. The greatest delay to large profits was the length of time it took to get the materials to its paying customers. A quicker transportation system was needed.

Boats on Lake Champlain or the D&H line that ran alongside the Lake offered the fastest route downstate or further north into Canada and from there to the rest of the world, but it was still a long, time consuming process to get the 26 | North Country Living Magazine | Vol. 3 No. 2

A27 goods by horse from downtown Keeseville to the Port Kent dock and the D&H railway station just six miles away. Today, the trip can be made in minutes by truck; however, a horse laden with all that weight would take nearly the entire day to make the trip and back. Lightening the loads just meant more trips which didn’t save any time at all.

In the late 1880s, a group of businessmen, including Edmund K. Baber, Rufus Prescott, Charles M. Hopkins and Adelbert W. Boynton, came up with the answer; they would build their own railway line that would run the near six miles to Port Kent. On April 4, 1889 the line was chartered by the newly established Keeseville, Ausable Chasm & Lake Champlain Railroad Company. With the exception of one small problem, the line was to be a simple straight shot from the top of Keeseville with one fairly sharp right turn down to Port Kent. That small problem was the more than 150 foot deep chasm in the middle of the route.

The obvious solution was a bridge, but it would have to be a very well made bridge to handle the constant demands of the heavy train crossing it multiple times every day. Rather than designing and constructing their own bridge a professional company, The Berlin Iron Bridge Company, was hired by the young railroad owners. Knowing that tremendous weights were involved, there were serious doubts in the ability of the Chasm walls to withstand the pressure of the passing train. A cantilever bridge was designed to cross the gap. A cantilever bridge is one that uses structures projected horizontally into space. The arms and trusses act as counterbalances above the supports. The bridge was built, delivered in pieces, assembled on location and finally tested by having a lightly loaded train cross over it, which fortunately for the train and driver, was successful.

Again, being businessmen the owners of the line wanted to make the line as efficient as possible. Since it only ran 5.64 miles over fairly easy terrain besides the chasm a full sized operation was not necessary. While big enough to carry passengers and freight goods the line was smaller than traditional railroads

earning it the name the Peanut Railroad. Rail ties and spikes were noticeably smaller than that of regular lines.

Another cost saving measure was that only the track necessary was laid and no round house was built. This meant that the railway was a one way operation; there was no way for an engine to turn around and head in the opposite direction. Cars were pulled westward and pushed eastward by the engine meaning the train went forward from Port Kent to Keeseville and then in reverse from Keeseville to Port Kent.

Once the bridge crossing the Chasm as well as several more smaller basic bridges in Wickham Marsh were built and all the track was laid, the line was ready to operate.

The KAC&LC Railroad opened May 26, 1890. It carried freight goods as planned as well as mail and passengers on a trip that lasted about twenty minutes, a vast improvement over the former method of horse drawn carts. The line ran seven scheduled trips daily and three on Sundays. According to the listing in Poor’s Railroad Manual of 1890, the line averaged 4.55 cents per mile for passengers and 8.92 cents average ton mile rate. and the cost for the two mogul engines, tender, passenger car and freight cars. As of the second year the busy railroad showed a handsome profit and continued to run profitably for quite a few years.

One great financial loss came in the early 1900s when the line converted to the cheaper and more popular electric power. While electric engines worked well on a national level in the rugged Adirondacks this did not prove the case as normal weather hazards including snow and fallen timber caused constant interruptions to the power lines generating many delays and lost revenues. Further legal problems between the Keeseville, Ausable Chasm & Lake Champlain Railroad Company and the Keeseville Power Company ended the issue and the line converted back to steam power during 1911.

1911 was an eventful year for the line as a report in the Essex Country Republican showed. Two young girls were caught walking across the Cantilever bridge and were surprised by the train which could not stop in time to prevent hitting the girls.

The fast thinking girls were able to leap, catching hold of a wire on one side of the bridge and hung suspended over the 150 foot drop until the crew from the train could race back and lift the girls to safety, of course warning the frightened girls to never walk across the bridge again.

The line continued to operate until the increase of automotive transportation presented a cheaper and easier method of transporting and the need for the tiny railroad dwindled to virtually nothing by the early 1920s. The company initially tried to connect to a larger line to increase business but permission

was denied and the line officially closed on February 5, 1924.

The bridge was taken down in the 1930s.

Over ninety years later, the Peanut Railroad of Keeseville is a distant memory many know nothing about at all. A couple of bumps exist on private property where some track is buried.

The Keeseville Railway Station does however still exist to this day. Very few diners ever realize the North Country Club Restaurant on Route 9 in Keeseville once served a very different purpose as the station for Keeseville’s Peanut Railroad. As for other mementos of the line, from photographs to tickets and rail line guide books and actual rail ties and spikes, they sit in a lighted glass case in the Anderson Falls Heritage Society at 96 Clinton Street in Keeseville waiting to show the majesty that was the Keeseville, Ausable Chasm & Lake Champlain Railroad Company.

o learn more about the ongoing effort to preserve and showcase Vermont’s Mount Independence State Historic Site as a tourist and heritage destination, North Country Living met up with Stephen Zeoli, president of the board of directors of the non-profit Mount Independence Coalition.

Somewhat off the beaten path of summer tourists, this Revolutionary War-era historic site is nevertheless important. It is located in the Town of Orwell, along the shore of Lake Champlain, and directly across from Fort Ticonderoga.

A new Mount Independence visitor’s center with museum—along with a network of beautiful walking trails which traverse woodland, meadow and lakeshore—welcomes those who like their lessons in American history clothed in peace, quiet and nature’s variable northern finery.

In its heyday during the mid 1770s, Mount Independence included an American-built, stockaded star-shaped fort — which is sometimes called Fort Independence and was larger than Fort Ticonderoga — a military hospital, a vessel freighting area, a chert quarrying site, small caves, as well a unique engineering marvel of its time, a floating bridge which linked the two forts across an illustrious lake narrows, dubbed the “Gibraltar of North America” by the British.

are advocates for maintaining and preserving this important setting, one of the nation’s most pristine Revolutionary War sites. Zeoli is also the author of “Mount Independence, the Enduring Legacy of a Unique Historic Place”, a guide to the site. The book, now in its second printing, is available at the Mount Independence gift shop.

NCL: You have a long association with Mt. Independence. How did you get involved in preserving this important historic site?

Zeoli: I graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in recreation management in 1978. I was hired as the site’s caretaker and interpreter during the summer of 1979 and worked there for two years; that was long before a museum stood there. In fact, the cows did all the lawn mowing — at least until around 1990 when they were banned from grazing due to damage to the archeological sites.

Mount Independence was a very different experience back then.

NCL: How did the coalition organize to bring awareness to Mount Independence’s role in the creation of the United States of America?

Zeoli: What coalesced this group really started during the early 1970s. A utility company wanted to build a nuclear power plant along East Creek and some of the local people fought the plan, especially because of the site’s historical significance. In the end, the local folks actually won. The state then acquired most of the land although the Pell family of Fort Ticonderoga fame had purchased the northern end of the Mount as far back as the early 1900s in order to ncliving@denpubs.com

protect the pristine “viewshed” as seen from the fort.

NCL: Was the Mount mostly wilderness even during the time of the French?

Zeoli: Yes, it was all a vast wilderness area, but when the French occupied Fort Ticonderoga, which they called Fort Carillon, there was some activity, including cutting firewood, which was dragged back across the frozen lake surface.

During the French and Indian War, Roger’s Rangers may have had a skirmish with the French woodcutters on the mount, but it’s speculation. Also, Native American people mined chert — or flint — there. In fact, Mount Independence chert has been found as far away Maine, so it was trade good for making tools and weapons. Soldiers later used the chert for musket flints.

NCL: This time in history, at this locale, can become a jumble for the lay person, especially with all the shifting national powers holding the so-called high ground — France, England, America, then England again, occupying Fort Ticonderoga.

Zeoli: Well, the Americans didn’t build the fort at Mount Independence until the British retreated from Fort Ticonderoga (which they had taken from the French more than 20 years earlier).

By late 1776, there were — combined — 12,000 American soldiers at both forts. This was at the time Benedict Arnold’s little navy was defeated by the British at Valcour Island. By the very fact we had a navy on the lake delayed action and let the American finish fortifying the Mount. Also, at the time, British General Carlton, who raided western Vermont along the Otter Creek, decided that the Americans were just too fortified on Lake Champlain for a big attack.

NCL: The winter of 1776-77 was a harsh winter and the soldiers at

Zeoli: Men died right and left from exposure at the Mount. Ron Morgan, my Mount Independence Coalition board colleague, says that you can easily compare the winter conditions of Mount Independence to Valley Forge — and it was worse at Mount Independence.

Valley Forge was within a day’s journey of Philadelphia; Mount Independence was in the middle of a wilderness, three or four days from Albany. But they got through it. Then in the spring of 1777, the British gathered a new army led by Gen. John Burgoyne. During the year, the Americans were surrounded at both forts and retreated via Hubbardton. Of course the Battle of Hubbardton was a British victory but the delaying action stopped Burgoyne from following the main army. And then you had the British defeat at Saratoga later that Continued on page 32

NCL: What’s the significance of saving this history for tomorrow?

And what are the goals of the Mount Independence Coalition?

Zeoli: There are many reasons why we should preserve Mount Independence — and those are the goals of the Coalition. First, it’s a beautiful place. So, even if you don’t appreciate history, you can appreciate the place for its natural beauty.

Second, it’s the hallowed ground of American patriots; soldiers died there, now in unmarked graves (although most died of disease not battle wounds).

Beyond that, Mount Independence is the place where America first defended itself as a nation — all only a few weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Ultimately, it’s important to honor the place where patriots defended the land. They were fighting for themselves, their neighbors, their land.

We at least owe it to them to remember and learn from their sacrifices.

I often think about Lt. Col. Jed Baldwin, one of my favorite personalities at Mount Independence. He was an engineer from Massachusetts and supervised the construction of all the fortifications and the amazing floating bridge. He was in his 40s and had joined the army at the start of the revolution. He kept a journal and much of what we know about the Mount comes from his writing. He was a normal man, a common solider — he sacrificed so much. So when we preserve places like Mount Independence, we honor his memory and the memories of many other American soldiers like him.

Mt. Independence State Historic Site is also an a National Historic Landmark.

Ticonderoga Ti will celebrate its 250th anniversary this summer

I

t is a town that was founded on trade and strategy, forged in the fires of revolution ore, and built on a foundation of hard work and progress.

Now, 250 years after the Land Between Two Lakes became know as the Town of Ticonderoga, it’s time to celebrate.

Residents and civic leaders will honor the traditions of their forefathers as part of the Ticonderoga, the First 250 Years, celebration starting Saturday, July 19 and continuing through the following Saturday, July 26.

The History

The origins of Ticonderoga began at the end of the French and Indian War, when King George III divided 6,000 acres of land around Fort Ticonderoga equally among three lieutenants. John Stoughton was the only one to actually settle on his property. It is this land grant, dated July 24, 1764, that marks the beginning of Ticonderoga’s first 250 years.

According to historical records, the area that is now home to a town of 5,042 residents (the second biggest town in Essex County behind only North Elba) has always been vital.

As a straight between the two major lakes of the Adirondacks, Lake George and Lake Champlain, many Indian tribes met and fought at this location before Europeans settled the area.

The French and the British also battled in this land, as well as Loyalists and Patriots during the Revolutionary War. It is easy to see why Stoughton was the only taker in the original land grab, as settlement in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was anything but settling.

Ticonderoga has been a hub for many industries over its time, starting from its early life when settlers cleared the land, made charcoal, shot game and caught fish.

mill. It was also a hub in the ore industry, with the Horicon Iron Co. operating from 1878 to 1881, before it was destroyed by fire. That mill was transformed a year later into the Ticonderoga Paper and Pulp Company, the forerunner of International Paper.

Oh, and perhaps you have heard of those No. 2 pencils that kids use for their tests with the word, “Ticonderoga,” on them. When graphite was discovered on the aptly named Lead Mountain in 1815, it led to the 1839 patent for the production of lead pencils. The American Graphite Company produced the Ticonderoga Pencil.

As for the centerpiece of today’s local tourism, Fort Ticonderoga was a key strategic stronghold on the straits of Lake Champlain, as whoever controlled the fort controlled the flow of traffic on its waters. Built starting in 1756 at Fort Carillon, the strategic fortress was once occupied by every major player in the time period, starting with the French and changing hands to British control in 1759, when it was renamed Fort Ticonderoga.

of Champlain until May 10, 1775, when Ethan Allen and his forces, known as the Green Mountain Boys, overtook the fort in the night and brought it under American control.

The fort was traded between the two warring factions twice more in 1777, the latter victory by the soon-to-be Americans signalling one of the final defeats of British forces under the control of Gen. Burgoyne.

After life as a military stronghold, the fort was purchased in 1838 and opened as a hotel and was used as a shipping port from 1814 to 1850.

Like many pre-revolutionary towns, Ticonderoga was besieged by a historic fire which leveled the town in 1875, during the build-up to the 100th anniversary of the first American capture of the fort.

The celebration

Celebration events kick off Saturday, July 19 with a re-enactment at Fort Ticonderoga, titled “Defiance and Independence,” from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Also, there will be a Footrace at the Falls 5K run at 10 a.m., put on by the La Chute Roadrunners. The re-enactment at the fort will also take place Sunday, July 20, also running from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A pair of presentations follow to start the week, including a slide show on Old Ticonderoga with Bill Dolback Monday, July 21, 7 p.m., followed by a presentation on “Ticonderoga, Last Steamboat on Lake Champlain,” by Rich Strum, also at 7 p.m.

A special arts trek, directed by the festival guild, will take place starting at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 23. That will be followed by a Street Dance with the band Master Cylinders at 7 p.m.

On the official 250th anniversary date of Thursday, July 24, there will be the 250th Celebration in Bicentennial Park, featuring children’s activities from 2 until 4 p.m.; Bubblemania from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Community Building; the Ticonderoga Elks Lodge offering hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages and drinks from 5 to 8 p.m.; and a concert with Ruby Schooz from 5 to 9 p.m.

The concert will take an intermission at 6:30 p.m. for the Ticonderoga, the First 250 Years Ceremony which will be held at the Gazebo in Bicentennial Park. Music will again pick up until 9 p.m., when there will be a celebratory fireworks display.

The weekend events for the celebration will revolve around the Ticonderoga High School Alumni Weekend, with the THS Alumni Awards event held at the Best Western Friday, July 25, at 6 p.m. The THS Alumni Golf Tournament will be hosted at the Ticonderoga Country Club Saturday, July 26, at 8 a.m.

Saturday will also be the day for Streetfest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Fort Ticonderoga Muster from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Events finish up Sunday, July 27, with the dedication of the Little White Church in Chilson with an 11 a.m. church service and cemetery walk of the Old Chilson Burying Grounds from noon until 12:30 p.m. A pig roast will also be held starting at noon.

Ticonderoga, the First 250 Years Committee, cosponsored by the Ticonderoga Historical Society and the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum, was formed to lead the community in commemorating the 250th anniversary of Ticonderoga along with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain and the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The committee’s goal is, “to encourage enthusiasm and excitement, motivating every person to participate in sharing stories depicting the first 250 years. Stories can be told through photographs, journals, artifacts, artwork, oral histories and video and can be provided on paper or formatted digitally.”

The committee also seeks stories from people about the everyday happenings of Ticonderoga, about how people lived on the land and through different eras in the life of Ti. Living United GIVING BACK | The United Way’s Annual Day of Caring

Volunteers seize the day in Addison County, VT

U

nited Way’s Day of Caring is one great day of giving back every year. During late summer, Addison County is invaded by young people wearing color-coordinated t-shirts. The young people—wearing blue t-shirts—include students from Middlebury College, Middlebury Union High School, Vergennes Union High School and the Hannaford Career Center, among others. With over 100 volunteer jobs needing to get done around the area, there is always plenty of work to go around For example, last year over 100 members of Middlebury Union High School’s sophomore class tackled several volunteer job requests by Addison County United Way, according to teacher Noah Hurlburt.

“My crew of student volunteers helped clean window glass at the town’s sports center and do some painting at the Mary Hogan Elementary School,” he said.

“Participation in the United Way Day of Caring is a great way to team build with students, employees. It will give your organization a way to make a significant impact in our community,” Hurlburt adds.

“Participation provides a greater understanding of how commitment of time and money makes a difference in our community.”

Studies have shown that participation in service days or more formal volunteer programs lower turnover rates because employees see community service as an attractive company benefit.

In the case of the MUHS student volunteers under Hurlburt’s supervision, all report having fun and feeling good about helping 44 | North Country Living Magazine | Vol. 3 No. 2

out. Several of last year’s volunteers—Patrick Covel of Salisbury, Marcello Hanta-Davis of Middlebury, Sophia Hodges of Cornwall, Reubie Weekes of Middlebury, Dana Gero of Cornwall, Harlee Gero of Ripton, Alex Whipple of Salisbury, Edward Eagan of Cornwall, Elias Wyncoop of Orwell, Cassie Kehoe of Middlebury, Dylan Moulton of Middlebury, and Tsering Chophei of Bridport—will join in the upcoming Days of Caring event.

Elsewhere, MUHS students helped paint shelving, clean up a dirty porch, and plant perennials at the United Way office on Court Street. Other projects, equally challenging, were underway in other parts of town.

This year’s Days of Caring were held Sept. 26 and Sept. 28. The hosts for the days requiring plenty of elbow grease were the United Way of Addison County, RSVP and the Volunteer Center.

Last year, according to United Way officials, more than 500 volunteers completed 120 projects adding up to $74,000 in value given back to various communities in Vermont.

Days of Caring include volunteer family, friends and co-workers, too.

“Volunteers leave their volunteer site with an understanding of our agency’s mission, along with a greater connection to the community and the rewarding sense of accomplishment,” according to United Way’s Kate McGowan.

receive a Days of Caring blue t-shirt and gather at the Middlebury Green just before heading off for a day of work.

Some examples of how entire towns chips in during Days of Caring occurred in Addison County.

The staff of Country Home Products in Vergennes pruned trees and cleared trails.

MUHS students cleared trails for MALT, organized costumes, cleaned up Helen Porter’s courtyard gardens, washed windows at the hockey rink, and painted playground structures, picket fences and window boxes.

In Middlebury, Hannaford Career Center students built a dog play area at Homeward Bound and a root cellar at Willowell, harvested potatoes for HOPE, and painted barns at Field Days.

Langrock, Sperry and Wool employees painted rooms at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Middlebury and tuned up their playground.

The staff of WomenSafe made delicious muffins for kids at Middlebury’s College Street Children’s Center.

Northlands Job Corps students in Vergennes washed windows at the Armory Lane senior housing complex.

In Middlebury, Aurora School students rehabilitated gardens and visited with Elderly Services’ participants.

Middlebury College’s sports teams painted a wheelchair ramp in Bridport and a classroom in Leicester, reorganized a barn, cleaned out an attic and worked on the Habitat for Humanity house in Cornwall.

The Hannaford Food and Pharmacy staff painted the outside of the Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury.

Vermont Community Foundation staff painted porches at the Sheldon Museum in Middlebury.

In Vergennes, UTC Aerospace staff painted, cleaned and prepared a delicious dinner at the John Graham Shelter.

In Middlebury, Kinney Drugs staff painted a Counseling Services residence.

Middlebury’s Eastview senior residents picked and processed apples for HOPE. The Vergennes Explorers cleaned up gardens, repaired raised beds and enjoyed a friendly visit at the Vergennes Residential Care Home.

Community volunteers processed books at the Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes, baked cookies for Community Meals, filed paperwork at the Open Door Clinic, mulched gardens at the Shoreham Elementary School and took pictures of volunteers.

Back in 1968, the Cornwall United Fund was renamed the United Fund of Addison County. By 1974, the organization’s United Fund name—as was true for other agencies of its kind around the U.S.— was changed to United Way and became officially known as United Way of Addison County.

“Today, nonprofit organizations in Addison County are invited to register Day of Caring projects to receive volunteers for the day. You can list as many projects as you would like. However, volunteers select projects, so making your projects fun and get some excellent work accomplished for your organization at the same time,” according to United Way’s publicity in the Addison County communities it reaches.

This year, United Way of Addison County will celebrate 46 years as an integral leader in communities throughout the county—it’s just one more reason to cheer. Life is good here and it can be even better with the help and TLC of Days of Caring volunteers.

An Outdoor Paradise

L

ocated along the scenic Roosevelt-Marcy trail, the town of Newcomb serves as a mecca for warm weather activity.

The community offers hiking along the High Peaks or the Santanoni preserve, angling on the Hudson River, nine holes of golf on the rolling banks of the river or a race with rubber loons. Yes, rubber loons.

In an effort to showcase the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry’s educational programing in 2011, “Loons and Logs” originated.

Annually, Loons and Logs takes place in May featuring workshops on the migratory song birds and traditional Adirondack woodworking.

“This event draws tourists to the area,” said Frank Morehouse, SUNY ESF associate. “Along with many locals. A rubber duck race is something we thought of when coming up with new ways to fund raise. More appropriate for the Adirondacks is the loon.”

Morehouse also explained that prior to this event no rubber loons had ever been manufactured in the United States. Finding a company to take on this project turned into a project of its very own. They eventually pinned down Celebre-duck — a California

based company to conceptualize the loon and produce 1,000 for the pilot event.

Set on Rich Lake and the Rich Lake outlet, participants can sponsor a pre-numbered loon in the race, or purchase a loon to take home. Loons race through the rapid flowing outlet and the sponsor of the winning loon is garnished with a prize.

The hamlet of Newcomb is also set as a landmark in presidential history. While hunting on Mount Marcy then Vice President Teddy Roosevelt was informed of President McKinley’s failing health. Roosevelt was sworn into office on a train from Tahawus to the North Creek train station. A memorial marker on Route 28 commemorates this historical moment in time.

Historical aspects of the hamlet extend to Camp Santanoni.

Steven Engelhart, executive director of the Adirondack Architectural Heritage Center, explained in his experience what he has found to be the three reasons tourists and locals alike choose to visit Santanoni time and time again.

Built between the years of 1892-93 by Albany banker Robert Pruyn and his wife Anna, Santanoni hosted many prominent guests including President Teddy Roosevelt and the great grandson of author James Fenimore Cooper.

“There is regional architecture here. The buildings have been designed and configured in a way to be respectful to the setting,” said Engelhart. “There is also a traditional Japanese architecture to the buildings and that is rare in the Adirondacks.”

The main lodge at Camp Santanoni is only assessable by a five mile carriage road, walkers and bikers as well as equestrians are welcomed to use this road; however, no motor vehicle use is permitted. The five mile stretch ends with the main lodge nestled on the banks of the Newcomb Lake.

“There is a detoxification process that occurs during this walk,” stated Engelhart. “By the time you arrive you are fully ready to be there, part of the draw to the entire trip is in the work it takes to get there.”

I

n early 2012, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a bill into law making the Green Mountain State the first to ban fracking.

Fracking—short for induced hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracturing—may be controversial, but it is proving to be a highly successful means of extracting oil and natural gas from the ground—at least in more energy independent-minded states. With its fracking ban, and after Vermont Yankee closes, most of the state’s energy sources will be imported.

The ongoing controversy of running a natural gas pipeline through Addison County—to carry Canadian natural gas derived from fracking—continues to fire-up environmental activists in the state.

“This is a big deal,” Shumlin said in a news conference when Montpelier’s fracking ban went into effect. “This bill will ensure that we do not inject chemicals into groundwater in a desperate pursuit for energy.”

Despite Vermont’s decision to forbid fracking within state lines, other states—such as Pennsylvania, Texas, Colorado and North Dakota—are moving forward with fracking and domestic energy which produce huge budget surpluses.

Fracking is already starting to reduce the nations’s oil imports and create thousands of high-paying jobs in the field and in service-support offices.

According to several news sources, including CNBC and MSNBC, by 2017 it is expected that fracking will help make the USA a world-class energy exporter again—up from its lowly status of a major importer of Middle-Eastern oil.

Various energy analysts foresee a rebirth of U.S. industrialization—thanks to cheaper homemade fracked oil and gas.

In some cases, as seen in the major fracking states, revenues generated from fracking have completely paid for education and social programs—all without raising property or income taxes.

When Gov. Shumlin signed Vermont‘s anti-fracking law, he may have forever shut off a tax-free way of balancing Vermont’s budget—and then some.

The fact that a small portion of Vermont sits atop oil and natural gas deposits has been known since at least the 1940s, possibly earlier. And while fracking in Vermont may be banned, drilling the old fashioned way apparently is still legal with the proper permits.

“Dreams of oil and natural gas in the sedimentary rocks of the Champlain Lowlands have brought about surges of optimism over many years that Vermont would become an energy producer,” according to geologist Harold Meeks who wrote a book surveying the state’s resources, titled “Vermont’s Land and Resources.”

Meeks’ book was first published in 1986 and provided technical details about Vermont’s fossil fuel reserves; it also fueled interest in using new technologies to explore for deposits.

“The most recent enthusiasm was simulated by a well drilled to depth of 12,400 feet by Shell Canada just a few miles north of the Quebec boundary,” Meeks wrote in the mid 1980s.

According to the University of Vermont, the Champlain Valley was formed by a deep sedimentary basin, a typical feature where biogenic oil and gas is typically found.

As early as the mid 1950s, the American Gas Association had mapped the lake region in detail and designated it as a promising source for future oil and gas development.

During the 1956-57 period, several test wells were drilled on Grand Isle and around St. Albans; there were clear oil and gas signatures but nothing of commercial value was produced in this mid-century era before the advent of advanced fracking technology.

The now famous Yandow well was drilled to a depth of 4,500 feet.

“The well, drilled by the Henderson Company, used a cabletool rig typical of 20th-century wells in Texas. As time passed, the wooden blocks at the base of the derrick rotted and the derrick settled on the well head, tipping it about 30 degrees,” according to a Vermont Geological Survey summary.

When the Bellrose family of Swanton struck a pocket of natural gas —while drilling a 650-feet-deep water well, in 1957—it set off the on-again, off-again mini oil and gas exploration “boom.” This period of up and down booms, which ironically never produced anything, lasted into the mid 1970s.

“We had a new well drilled to 650 feet deep and hooked the water into the house. After you drew it from the tap it looked and tasted like Alka Seltzer,” Mrs. Lawrence Bellrose reported to Harold Meeks about the 1957 drilling effort. “(One day) my husband went down to the cellar... he struck a match and the room lit up with a ball of fire!”

In a special report to the Vermont Legislature in 1956, then State Geologist Charles Doll announced that “it is nothing new to residents of the Champlain Valley in Vermont that natural gas occurs in certain water wells... The basin of sedimentary rocks possesses geologic features that warrant the exploration of this area for oil and gas.”

Finding oil and gas depends on detailed analysis of subsurface rocks. Structural maps of buried rock formations help geologist pinpoint where the best places to search for oil and gas.

Vermont has proven ultra-deep gas deposits in the basin’s Potsdam Sandstone Formation and related carbonate rocks including the subsurface rocks of the Utica Shale. These various rock groups, of which many contain fossil marine lifeforms, formed over 480 million years ago, during the late Cambrian and early Ordovician periods.

According to geologist Don Kelley of the U.S Geological Survey, “The area west of a line drawn somewhat wet of the central spine of the Green Mountains from Richford (north) to Stamford (south) can be considered as Vermont’s oil and Gas province. The results of future exploration may alter the dimensions of this province.”

As far as Vermont oil and gas deposits are concerned, State Geologist Laurence Becker has publicly stated that he doesn’t think any oil survived the extreme pressures and heat of mountain-building activity here millions of years ago. But, he has noted that natural gas likely exists here in enormous quantities.

Interestingly, state legislators have never shown much interest in developing such local resources. Today, with a fracking ban in effect in Vermont, it’s hard to imagine that natural gas resources will ever being developed locally.

The first attempt to tap gas in Vermont occurred in 1957 on the farm of Isadore Yandow in Alburg.

After the Yandow’s wildcat well was drilled, several big efforts

followed—the 1959 Gregoire well in Mallet’s Bay, the 1964 American Petrofina well drilled on the farm of Harry Hutchins in South Alburg, and the 1968 Baker Farm well drilled on Grand Isle, to name just a few. All of the wells just mentioned may have indicated natural gas was present in the deep rocks, but nothing was ever produced.

In 1983, members of the VLA or Vermont Landowners Association arranged with a Pittsburgh law firm to lease a total of 10,000 acres for oil and gas exploration. The association was set up the previous year to serve landowners interested in exploring oil and gas under their land.

What the association was quick to learn was that various town zoning laws were obstacles in moving ahead with drilling projects.

Paul Stone, president of the VLA, was quoted in Vermont Business magazine at the time saying that, “We had been told that if zoning laws are silent regarding oil and gas drilling then such operations are permissible. The (Vermont) attorney general now says just the opposite. If zoning is silent on the matter than drilling is prohibited...”

But within a year of the VLA’s stalemate, another effort to locate oil and gas was underway in Fairfield.

On July 19, 1984, the Columbia Gas Transmission Corp., with contractor Delta Drilling of Texas, started a 10,500-feet-deep well along Chester A. Arthur Road, a rural byway located near Black Creek and named after the U.S. President and Vermont native son.

A year later, State Geologist Charles Ratte reported that the well was a dud.

“The David and Jean Burnor Well No. 1... was abandoned and plugged on Oct. 22, 1984 at a depth of 6,970 feet,” Ratte reported to the Association of American State Geologists. “Information regarding geologic formation(s) encountered, etc., are by law to remain confidential for two years unless released earlier by Columbia...”

Despite the costly efforts to tap Vermont oil and gas from the 1950s through the mid 1980s, nothing was ever produced using traditional drilling methods.

A 1970 issue of “The Report of the State Geologist” to the Vermont State Legislature sums up the technical challenge of reaching Vermont’s oil and gas: “None of the wells cited appears to have penetrated below the great thickness of the Ordovician rocks... The thick underlying sequence of Cambrian formations with horizons of sandstones and similar types has not yet been probed.... Until the Cambrian rocks have been explored, it cannot be said that the Champlain basin has been adequately tested (for oil and gas) in Vermont.”

Ever since the 1980s, there was little effort made to get at Vermont oil and gas. And the state’s recent fracking ban has put an end to any exploitation. While a future legislature could overturn the ban it seems unlikely. However, there is possible wiggle room.

In 2012, Vermont H. 464 may have ended any opportunity to develop its native fossil fuel supplies using the fracking method,

A55 however, according to Project Vote Smart, the bill requires that the Secretary of Natural Resources submit a report to the legislature, on or before Jan. 15, 2015, about how hydraulic fracturing can be regulated—thus leaving a door open for future change.

Across the lake in New York, the vast Marcellus and Utica shale formations hold a huge supply of natural gas (and oil) that would, conservatively, fuel U.S. consumption for decades to come.

Over 30 states have been using hydraulic fracturing or fracking technology instead of traditional drilling methods. Fracking requires chemically treated water to be injected below ground to liberate gas and oil locked inside deep, ancient rocks.

According to the New York State Petroleum Council‘s Executive Director Karen Moreau, those states with oil and gas deposits will see their bottom line greatly improved by taking fracking route.

“Natural gas development will give a huge shot in the arm to many economically depressed areas of upstate New York,” Moreau said in a public statement that was released last summer following an Empire State court appeal which indicated that efforts to ban hydraulic fracturing would be reviewed.

So was Montpelier’s move to ban fracking in Vermont an illconceived, knee-jerk reaction? Probably not, if you’re a member of the state’s environmental community. which has long been against Big Oil and the use of fossil fuels.

“I’m very proud that Vermont will become the first state to ban fracking for natural gas,” Paul Burns, executive director of the

Vermont Public Interest Research Group was quoted in multiple reports during 2012. “I think it’s a great thing for the protection of Vermont’s critical natural resources, our air, land, water, and to protect public health. And it also sends a very strong message to folks in many other states who are taking on the gas and oil industry.”

Conversely, fracking proponents think Vermont banned fracking without knowing what fossil-fuel resources it was shuttering up forever. ”We don’t know what our assets are in this state…,” said Rep. Heidi Scheuermann of Stowe who objected to H. 464. “We have no idea if some farmers in Franklin County might be able take advantage of an economic opportunity on their property.”

Oil and gas expert John Kingston, of McGraw Hill Financial’s online Barrel review, has pointed to what he calls the Vermont Paradox following the state’s fracking ban.

“The state’s desire to use more natural gas even as it has banned fracking as an intolerable evil was always amusing to watch,” according to Kingston. “But it took place against a backdrop where most of the state’s electricity was being generated by an emissionsfree nuclear power plant. Vermont Yankee provided the state the luxury to be low on the emissions scale, have adequate supplies of power, while simultaneously criticizing fossil fuels and planning for a renewable future. That luxury is going—hard choices await.”

A56 EYE ON THE ARTS | 81-year-old North Country painter

Jan Palmer

Award winning North River artist works in pastels, watercolors Story and photos by Nancy Lee Dunn

J

an Palmer walked around the corner of her barn, finishing up the latest project.

“Good timing!” she said. “I was just finishing up with the wood.”

Every year, Palmer gets five and a half cords of wood, and to this day, the 81-year-old stacks it herself.

This remarkable woman, considered by many to be the doyenne of art in the Adirondacks, stands upright and has a formidable presence. She is selfpossessed, confident, and kindly outspoken.

Palmer continued to go through the tasks she had completed.

“I’ve been moving plants down from upstairs to the porch.” Jan’s 1850 farmhouse is filled with much-loved antiques and art. The spongeware, antiques and paintings have been hand-picked by Palmer.

In her living room hangs the watercolor of her daughter on an Oriental rug, a painting that was a finalist in the Over 60 category in American Artist magazine. To the untrained eye, it seems to be an oil or a pastel – the detail is too accurate to be a watercolor. But, as Jan explains, this is her style in painting watercolors.

“I like to keep the background loose and very detailed on the subject,” she said. “I know that detail in painting is now considered ‘tight,’ but it is the way I prefer to paint. Painting is hard work. It is mileage with the brush.”

She quotes Picasso: “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”

The preliminary sketches in Jan’s studio give truth to that. She does both watercolors and pastels on watercolor paper, although sometimes she will use sanded paper for pastels. When starting a new painting, she does a number of detailed sketches, which she then transfers to the paper. From there, she will start painting.

She is not a seat-of-the-pants painter.

“It’s work,” she said with a laugh.

Some of her favorite painters are Sargent and Homer, who create loose backgrounds and more detailed subjects.

Palmer doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t an artist. Art is in her blood. Her grandfather painted, and her daughter is a well-known clay artist.

Thinking back, she recollects always drawing and made a comic strip for her mother at about the age of seven. After high school in her Canadian hometown of St. John, New Brunswick, she went to art school for three years. This was right after World War II, so many excellent artists were there teaching.

“It was right after the war, so no one was buying paintings,” Palmer said.

“There was no other work for artists, so I had the benefit of all of these marvelous teachers. Many of my favorites painted with watercolors. We always painted outdoors, so we learned to paint fast. If we were caught painting from a photograph, it would have been a rap across the knuckles.”

While at art school, Palmer saw an article about Staples-Smith, a famous window designer in New York City, and decided that she was going to work for her. After graduation in 1952, Jan moved to the city and was hired by Staples56 | North Country Living Magazine | Vol. 3 No. 2

A57 Smith. She painted the papier-mache figures and backdrops that went into Lord and Taylor windows and the windows of many of the other top stores in Manhattan. She was paid $1 an hour, an excellent sum in that day and age.

Palmer worked there for several years until she joined a union, for which she was summarily fired. She went on to freelance, designing window displays for another company in Greenwich Village for several years before she stumbled into illustrating, working on all types of books in her 35-year career.

She became known for her realistic style, able to do illustrations that were difficult for other artists. She worked with a number of agents over the years, and ending with Harriet Kasak, who represented Palmer to the big publishers of the time. Jan believes that the commissions she paid were well worth it.

“I couldn’t be going around to the publishers with my portfolio,” she said. “They did that for me and were worth every penny.”

One of her most well-known series was the updated version of Raggedy Ann and Andy. Johnny Gruelle was the original creator of the series, writing the works and illustrating them for children, but they were very wordy and had small pictures.

When the copyrights expired, Simon and Schuster bought the rights and hired Palmer to illustrate them. She was the first artist to work on them after Gruelle, and she kept the same feel and appearance of his work in her illustrations. Each book took about a year and Palmer completed five of these works.

In semi-retirement in 1984, Palmer bought her farmhouse in North River and moved to the Adirondacks. Always an avid outdoorswoman, she took up paddling. With a partner, she raced and qualified for the national competition a number of times. She continued to paint, and began to renovate a barn on her property into a studio.

“I went to a workshop in Oneonta and it was held in a converted barn studio,” Palmer said. “I thought, ‘I have a barn,’ and set to work getting my barn renovated. It was a labor of love and took several years. Adding the cupola was a big job, also.”

Her studio is on the second floor of her barn, a light filled sanctuary. She works and teaches from here once a week.

Jan started to paint with pastels about seven years ago.

“I love the quality,” she said. “They resemble oils, which I didn’t like to use because I love drawing so much. With pastels, I can draw and lay colors next to each other, almost like pointillism.

I underpaint with watercolor and then add the pastels.”

It didn’t take long for her to win awards in pastels as well as watercolors. Her most recent awards were the recognition by American Artist, and a first place win in the 13th Annual National Miniature Exhibition in 2013. She has been in the National Pastel Exhibition in Old Forge seven times and the Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolors 10 times.

As for her future, Jan plans to continue painting and teaching, working in her garden and tending to her home. She likes to travel, and just returned from a trip to Mexico, where her potter daughter was on a three month art trip. Jan has an art show at the Widlund Gallery at the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek until June 25, with the opening reception June 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. Her art is also represented at the Blackburn Gallery in Glens Falls.

Each year small mom and pop ice cream stands cater to local residents and the throng of tourists that descend on the region. Here is a cross section of a few fan favorites.

occasionally over the years. Their styles and fare are as varied as what they call their ice cream. Soft serve, creamies, and dandy creme, all refer to the same thing: a needed break from the heat when summer finally makes it this far north.

Some are destinations in themselves, and spring isn’t here until your home-town stand opens at last after a long winter.

West Plattsburgh’s Harrigan’s Tastee Freeze is one of the region’s venerable old guard. Built in 1959, its exterior has changed little from the days of hoop skirts, muscle cars with fins and Chubby Checker songs on the AM radio. Another thing Continued on page 60

that hasn’t changed is the service and quality ice cream you can expect from the drive-in stand.

“My parents started Harrigan’s. They got the idea by traveling on a vacation down south,” says Peter Harrigan, the second generation owner of Harrigan’s. “There were Tastee Freezes all over down south, and they knew there was nothing up here, so they thought it was a good idea.”

Harrigan has since branched out to Chazy, opening Creamies Ice Cream on Route 9, 15 years ago.

Martha’s Dandee Creme in Queensbury was almost a teen by the time Ronnies came around. Opened in 1947 on a wrap-around porch, their building has changed markedly, with more growth planned for the end of this season.

Recently featured on the Today Show, and strategically situated across the road from Six Flags Great Escape Theme Park, Martha’s features a revolving 36 flavor menu to accommodate the line of people which typically reaches out to the road. Some hard ice cream locations feature that many flavors, but seldom does a soft ice cream shop cater to so many soft serve ice cream flavors. By revolving several of their flavors every three days, and working on a much larger scale than most, Martha’s Dandee Crème is able to keep the crowd moving and happy.

“Besides of course the vanilla, our favorite flavors have been peanut butter and salted caramel,” said Martha’s owner Dennis Lafountaine.

At the end of the season Martha’s will expand to add a gift shop and a hot food concession.

Stands dot the Green Mountain state’s landscape as well.

Nestled snugly behind brightly painted boulders, Goodies Snack Bar in Vergennes, near the Crown Point bridge draws customers equally from both Vermont and New York. Located alongside a peaceful Vermont farm field, Goodies is known mostly for the prehistoric serving sizes of their cones and dishes.

“We try really hard to keep our prices down and our sizes big,” 60 | North Country Living Magazine | Vol. 3 No. 2

says owner Steve Goodman. “It’s what keeps people coming back.

It’s nice to see the parking lot full.”

Goodman got his start in the service industry in New York.

Originally from Keeseville, Goodman’s parents owned the Route 9 Diner there. When he grew up and moved to Vermont, Goodman and his wife Cindy couldn’t pass up the opportunity when the roadside ice cream stand came up for sale in 2003. It’s all about location, and what would later become Goody’s, after some massive renovations, had exactly the location to cater to traffic from two states.

“We’ve worked hard to make this business what it is and we’re always trying to improve. We try really hard to have something for everyone,” said Goodman.

Goodies Snack bar also features an extensive menu of summer comfort food, from burgers to wings, and poutine to bread dough.

Just up the road, on the New York side of the lake in the quaint little village of Port Henry, sits Gene’s. Like other North Country shops, Gene’s splits its menu between ice cream and hot food.

While shops like Harrigan’s were fortunate enough to build within a stone’s throw of a michigan stand, Gene’s serves their michigans right alongside the ice cream. When the stand changed hands in 2007, owner Walter Wojewodzic made a point of going back to Gene’s original michigan recipe, which has been a boon for business.

At Gene’s, the food is the anchor.

“The food keeps people coming back. It’s all about the food, but we do have the best ice cream around,” said Assistant Manager Paula Petro. “It’s almost like a custard.”

Though no North Country ice cream stands trumpet bad ice cream, it would be hard to argue against Donnelly’s Ice Cream on Route 86 in Saranac Lake as having both the best flavor and texture of any soft serve ice cream around. Located on Donnelly’s Corners, near the Saranac Lake airport, Donnelly’s has been in business since 1953. Their ice cream comes directly from the cows on Donnelly’s Farm, making it some of the richest and freshest ice cream available. It is not uncommon to see the tiny parking lot filled by a wedding party, who made a stop at Donnelley’s a part of their wedding day celebration.

Unlike other stands though, the choices at Donnelley’s are very limited; you choose the size. Donnelly’s rotates their limited cadre of flavors daily, and that flavor in a twist with vanilla is what you get. By far, black cherry is the favorite flavor around Donnelly’s Corners.

There are also some upstarts in the ice cream world, elbowing their way in amongst the venerable old dogs in the business, and some are thinking outside the cone.

Smooth Moves in Plattsburgh’s downtown business district started life a few years back as a coffee shop. Before long they added milkshakes and fruit smoothies to their repertoire, and the idea caught fire.

With a page-long list of flavors which is being added to whenever new flavors of syrup come out, Smooth Moves sometimes sports lines out the door in the summer months, and the Wi-Fi enabled coffee shop atmosphere keeps customers coming in even in the cold winter months.

“Some of the recipes we make up ourselves, other recipes come from where we get the flavoring from, and they have tons of recipes. Every time they add a flavor, the number of milkshake combinations that are possible; it’s just exponential,” said Smooth Moves’ owner Joe Kovacs.

“The most popular flavor would have to be cookies and crème, which has Oreo’s in it.”

Some of the recipes start off their lives as latte recipes, but with some experimentation, Kovacs and his staff are often able to change them into milkshake recipes.

purchased a small Italian Ice stand alongside Plattsburgh’s City Hall Place and dubbed it Mini Moves. After initially scrapping the Italian Ice, Kovacs brought it back, along with Smooth Moves’ array of fruit smoothies, to cater to the summer downtown crowds.

Among the profusion of ice cream shops in northern New York, there quietly stands an ice cream flavored elephant in the room.

By sheer volume, few places see as much ice cream go out their doors as do the Stewart’s Shops that populate nearly every village and city in Upstate New York.

They also feature a seemingly endless stream of foot traffic past their ice cream counter on their way to buy bread, milk or eggs, or to pay for gas. Many Stewart’s Shops in the Adirondacks even sport walk-up serving windows for the summer months.

D’Amelia says that vanilla and chocolate remain the stalwarts, but that the seasonal flavors that they add every summer at the cone counter often garner quite a following.

“Everyone likes to try new flavors and see if they are going to find a new favorite. This year’s favorite new flavor so far is Happy Camper.”

D’Amelia says that hand-packed pints can also be purchased. All their ice cream is made in their plant outside Saratoga Springs, using milk from 30 local dairies.

For the people who own or run ice cream stands, it’s about more than just business.

“I love the kids, they’re always smiling,” said Steve Goodman.

Few people are ever unhappy when they’re eating ice cream on a sunny summer day, and for the owners of these stands, it’s about bringing that happiness to them.

“It’s the people who make it,” said Paula Petro. “I love talking to the customers, and hearing the stories of the old days.”

“My fondest memory would be all the people, and all the enjoyment they get from our ice cream,” said Peter Harrigan.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through, stopping at one of the North Country’s many ice cream stands is never a bad idea, even if the parking lot is full and the line is out the door or to the road. It’ll be worth the stop.

It’s Race Time Story by Keith Lobdell

ike many other parts of the nation, here in the North Country, the weekends are made for the rev of the engine and the drop of the green flag. In short, summer is racin’ time.

Locally, there are a pair of half-mile ovals where local drivers live out their dreams of stock car racing glory through every turn, lap and checkered flag.

On Friday nights, racing fanatics who didn’t get enough from the televised NASCAR races can make their way to West Haven, Vt., for the four-turn action at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

Saturday nights feature the roar of the engine on the south end of Plattsburgh, NY, where cars from different divisions take to the 4/10-mile asphalt track at Airborne Park Speedway.

The two tracks will be closely aligned in 2014. Devil’s Bowl owner Mike Bruno and Airborne owner Jamie Atkins have formed a partnership aimed at strengthening both tracks for the immediate and distant future, with Bruno in a management position at Airborne.

Both tracks are sanctioned by the NASCAR Whelen AllAmerican Series, and both tracks feature similar racing classes with many of the same competitors in their weekly programs.

The two asphalt tracks are about an hour apart and share dirt track-style Modifieds as their NASCAR Division I. NASCARlicensed Division I drivers are eligible to compete for NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championships and special awards at the track, state and national level.

Airborne Park Speedway is running its 61st season of races in 2014, while Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s 48th season has also begun.

Airborne Speedway is a half-mile asphalt oval nestled in the Adirondack Park region of Plattsburgh. It is one of the oldest tracks in the northeast, bordered by Lake Champlain and the ncliving@denpubs.com

Green Mountains to the east, the St. Lawrence Seaway and Canada to the North, and the Adirondack Mountains to the South and West.

The track has gone through many transitions. It was originally a half-mile dirt track from 1954-1960. From 1961-1981 the halfmile was paved. From 1982-89 it was a third-mile dirt track, then became a .4-mile paved oval in 1990. It was remodeled to its current configuration six years ago.

It was part of NASCAR’s formative years. As a half-mile dirt track, it hosted a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event won

by Lee Petty in 1955. The win was No. 23 of the three-time series champion’s 54-win career. The 1955 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tim Flock finished third in that 200-lap, 100-mile race. Buck Baker was runner-up in the Airborne event and in the 1955 series point race.

Airborne in 1979 and 1980 when the track was a half-mile paved oval. Beaver Dragon of Milton, Vt., won three times and placed second in the other. He won the tour championship in both seasons.

The paved oval was remodeled to a unique configuration in 2008. Progressive banking of four, six, eight and 10 degrees was added in the corners. The elevation of turns 3 and 4 is 10 feet higher than turns 1 and 2. This creates a down-hill front straightaway and uphill back straightaway.

If you want to get involved in the action, they won’t let you on the big track, but there is a go-kart track located at the facility.

The seven-turn track located on the complex’s southeast corner is open from 5 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and 1 to 10 p.m. Saturdays.

Following the completion of the regular season, a professional team of dirt track preparation experts will transform Devil’s Bowl Speedway into a newer version of its former self by laying natural clay over the existing pavement. The track operated with that same dirt surface for its first four years and again from 1975 to 2009. The Richards family paved the track in 2010 as part of a long-term vision of overall growth at the speedway.

Dirt events will be held on Friday, Sept. 26, on Saturday, Oct. 4, and on Saturday, Oct. 18.

“We are proud of the growth of our asphalt program over the last few years, and we remain committed to weekly NASCAR asphalt racing at Devil’s Bowl and nothing will change that,” Bruno said. “We have one of the best paved facilities in the area, and it happens to be surrounded by 75 acres of the best natural racing clay in the country. omewhere in a sprawling office complex, a man loosened his tie, poured himself a drink and daydreamed about escape.

The city was growing unbearable — it was hot, flat and crowded and he just didn’t feel like working — and most of his

colleagues had already checked out for the month, venturing to coastal climes that offered much-needed rejuvenation.

(he’d also seen promotional materials showing breathtaking views and a wealth of adventurous activities), the kids could amuse themselves at the hotel, or on the beach, while he set off at daybreak with fishing gear, a bagged lunch and visions of serenity dancing in his head.

If Mom felt up to it, she could tag along.

But she could also kick back at the hotel’s lakefront veranda with a cocktail and a book, networking with other guests and taking in the earthy scent of the pines mixed with woodsmoke carried across the lake by gentle gusts.

The man would duck out of the office early on Thursday, he thought, and his troops would be up before dawn for the long commute ahead: Horsedrawn cab, train, steamboat and stagecoach.

Beams Between the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the Roaring Twenties, the first great wave of tourism started to reach the North Country.

Armed with a growing interest in naturalists like Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, wealthy New Yorkers sought a respite from the decisive societal changes, influx of immigrants and general unpleasantness of life in the teeming metropolis.

A new industry gradually began taking shape to accommodate the emerging cohort of citizens eager to discover the great outdoors.

Most of the old wooden hotels that sprouted from the untamed landscape — the scrappier, yet still refined, cousin to the Great Camps built on private land holdings catering to elite mustache-twirling zillionaires like Cornelius Vanderbilt and the Rockefellers and the larger resort hotels for the glitterati — have been lost over time due to a combination of neglect, fires and general apathy, making them less documented and studied by historians than their more bejeweled counterparts.

Prior to the Civil War, lodging for North County tourists was informal, namely board offered by farmers, guides and other locals who recognized visitors needed food and a place to sleep before spending weeks in the wilderness hunting and fishing, said Bryant Tolles, author of “Resort Hotels and the Adirondacks: The Architecture of a Summer Paradise 18501950”, in an interview with North Country Living.

An economic boom followed the Civil War and, with the additional propellant given by William Henry Harrison Murphy, a Connecticut native who galvanized the public with his enthusiastic tracts on the Adirondack adventuring, outside 76 | North Country Living Magazine | Vol. 3 No. 2

entrepreneurs envisioned the region following Saratoga Springs and Newport, Rhode Island as tourist meccas and rushed to build lakeside hotels and stagecoach lines with the latest amenities and modern conveniences like recreation, fine dining and verandas, to capitalize on the increase in interest.

“A huge flow of people poured into the region looking for an escape into the wilderness and to get a sense of being removed from the city,” said Tolles. “Water and mountain activities began to grow in popularity by people who wanted to connect to the landscape in other ways, including through art and literature, in order to undergo a spiritual renewal.”

Resort hotels were built in the style known as Adirondack Rustic, the school of architecture that leaned heavily on local granite fieldstone and timber, mostly pine, and were designed with available materials with the goal of blending into their surroundings.

In contrast to the grandeur of the Great Camps — sprawling private complexes containing bowling alleys, penny arcades and other Gilded Age luxuries designed to spare no modern luxury for their owners despite their remote locations — resort hotels tended to be single structures that were open to the public.

Wrap-around verandas were common, as were massive fireplaces, high ceilings and vegetable gardens and hunting groups on the surrounding lands, said Phil Terrie, an Adirondack and environmental historian who has written three books on the region, including “Contested Terrain: A New History of Nature and People in the Adirondacks.”

Living, while resort hotels were public accommodations that began as boarding houses.

Rooms were slowly added on until the building eventually transformed itself into a hotel, he said.

Most hotels would have a list of local guides who would facilitate trips for patrons.

Often, the man of the house would go off camping for a few days and leave the family back at the hotel. In between engaging in various water-oriented sports, the family would stay on the veranda and go through the courting rituals with other guests that we read about in novels, he said.

All of the big hotels had substantial land holdings containing their own gardens which produced the bulk of the summertime’s produce.

“If you look at pictures, it’s much more cleared than it is now,” said Terrie. “Many of those gardens have since been abandoned and gone back to forest.”

Some had their own livestock operations, raising sheep and lamb. Hotels also offered local game obtained by hunters on the company payroll, mostly fish and venison, sometimes on the sly if not in season under the wink-wink menu item “spring mountain lamb.”

“If the menu said that, maybe you had to ask the waiter,” said Terrie.

Much like today, towns would get hot and become trendy goto vacation places. Newspapers would dispatch their society columnists up to cover the latest gossip. Stars would make appearances. Prestigious hotels would change hands. Land would be gobbled up by speculators and investors. And then their stars would fade. northcountrylivingmagazine.com

Hamilton County According to Ted Aber and Stella King’s definitive “History of Hamilton County,” there were 250 resort hotels alone throughout the region by 1885, with remote Hamilton County, the oft-cited “Heart of the Adirondacks” that continues to host the region’s most undeveloped tracts, had five, including the Prospect House in nearby Blue Mountain Lake and the Sagamore Hotel in Long Lake, that aimed to serve glitzy clientele.

“It seemed like certain towns were higher up the food chain than others,” said Indian Lake town historian Bill Zullo.

The lines were often blurred as to delineating levels of luxury.

The Prospect House, for example, branded itself as the first hotel in the world to have electric lights in every room while others, like the Indian Lake House in Sabeal, were more rough and tumble.

Tolles categorized the hotels into three main categories: the top-notch large resort hotels for the fantastically wealthy that acted as insular worlds into themselves; the grand hotels that contained “distinctive architectural forms” with ambitious dining and entertainment options that were more accessible and the wooden hotels that, while impressive, “lacked major architectural significance” and failed to achieve the level of hospitality that flowed from their more highbrowed peers.

By 1990, regardless of the exact line that delineated the status between the uber-rich and the just plain well-off, there were three units remaining in Hamilton County: Hunt’s Hotel in Wells, the Indian Lake House and the Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake.

“As the tourism and travel industry changed and became less profitable, most of these hotels were closed,” said Tolles. There were fires and many burned to the ground. “Locals speculated about ‘insurance fires’ during the off-season when there were few people around.”

After a period when Hunt’s Hotel struggled to diversify their services — including a spell when the rambling structure was subdivided into apartments — it was sold to the Baldwin Research Institute in the early-2000s and converted to a center for public services.

The Indian Lake House was unceremoniously torn down in July 2009.

The largest of the three, the Adirondack Hotel in the town of Long Lake, has defied the odds and continues to function in providing the same essential services as it has since 1879, the year the electric light bulb was first tested, Albert Einstein was born and Madison Square Garden opened its doors.

The Adirondack Hotel On a Saturday morning in late-February, several dots appeared on the horizon, where the town’s eponymous lake met the light-blue sky, and became larger.

Within moments, the figures came into focus, slowed as they reached the shoreline and cautiously maneuvered their snowmobiles across Route 30 before gingerly coming to a stop before the looming green structure.

Parking their sleds in front of the sparkling lake, they clomped up the dusky-red porch, past the Adirondack Chairs, through the screen door and past the 600-pound black bear shot by a local sportsman named Dick Madison in 1980 and an oil painting of the famous Cold River hermit John Rondeau.

The boards groaned beneath their boots as they shifted in front of the intricately carved front desk with polished wood that stretched up to the high parquet ceilings.

They creaked as the riders, many with thick Brooklyn, Quebecois and New Jersey accents alongside the folks with that familiar North Country twang, ventured down the hallways lined with converted gas lamps, polished wooden banisters and ornamental fixtures with spoon carvings and iron radiators, all subtle touches showcasing a level of craftsmanship that isn’t always evident in the modern era, Continued on page 80

to drop their gear onto the large oak table beneath the watchful eyes of a mounted stag.

Riders spilled out through the formal sitting room with the piano and fieldstone fireplace; it was now time to eat and drink before heading back out onto the slushy paths.

Some made themselves comfortable on the toasty porch specked with a variety of rustic memorabilia and stuffed woodland creatures — raccoon, deer, tiger — alongside faded posters, including from Grand New Year’s Ball in 1906, and baskets and other old-timey paraphernalia.

Others sidled up to the bar to order a drink from the bartender with a supernatural memory who plucked bottles of cold beer from an refurbished icebox and regaled the group with a hearty laugh and a familiar face.

On the walls and in the rooms, the past beckoned.

Inseperable Like the sky and lake that snakes its way through the pines, the bridge and the Adirondack Hotel are intertwined and you can’t discuss one without discussing the other, said Long Lake Town Historian Abbie Verber.

A man named Cyrus Kellogg materialized in 1867 and constructed a hotel, the Long Lake Hotel, where Hoss’ Country Corner now stands at the corner of Route 28N and 30.

In February 1869, civic leaders met at the tidy wooden structure and decided that in order to accommodate the increasing tourism and logging activity in the region, they needed to build a bridge across Long Lake — a 14-mile-long ribbon that never broke a mile at its widest point — and settled on a floating bridge that would stretch from the east shore to Pine Island, a tiny outcropping of rock with a few lone pines, and then zigzag over to the west shore.

Using logs with sawn timbers for the planking, the bridge was completed in 1871 and Kellogg expanded his hotel four years later.

He then sold it to a man named Henry Austin and promptly built another on the shore facing Pine Island near the east end of the new bridge.

A man of modesty, he named it Kellogg’s Lake House before promptly deciding to expand operations skyward, passing away shortly after the opening on April 4, 1879.

His wife took over operations — the pinewood structure advertised “home comforts” for 35 guests, a number that eventually swelled to 75 during her watch — and she ran it until 1893 when it was sold to North Creek lumber baron Patrick Moynehan and John Anderson Jr. While voters had approved the construction of an iron suspension bridge in January 1892, the project remained inactive due to political stubbornness — the town didn’t want to lobby Albany for financial help — and the wooden float bridge was left to moulder before completely disintegrating into the water by 1894.

The town built a scow to ferry passengers across the lake and used it until 1901 when Highway Commissioner Patrick McSweeney, who was tasked with managing Kellogg’s Lake House until 1899, said the lake couldn’t efficiently take care of traffic on the main thoroughfare of the town.

The town board responded with a resolution authorizing him to enter into a contract with the lowest bidder, who ended up being Dennis Moynehan, a contractor for Owego Bridge Co. of Owego (and the son of the then-current owner).

Surveying and plans got underway immediately, wrote Frances Seaman, then Long Lake’s historian, in an article in the Hamilton County News, and two bridges were built, both of which utilized Pine Island as the center anchor.

A shorter iron bridge spanned the outlet of Shaw Brook where it entered the lake just west of Lake House Beach. After crossing the smaller bridge, the road made an S-curve on Pine Island before continuing onto the long, cantilevered suspension bridge that connected to the west shore of the lake onto what is today Rice Continued on page 82

McSweeney continued to operate the scow ferry throughout the summer. Sometime during the late winter of 1901, workmen staying at the Lake House became careless, upsetting a lamp which set the place on fire and reduced it to ash.

“It was likely an accident — not misbehavior as rumored,” said Verber.

The Hotel Sagamore, a bonafide resort hotel on adjacent bluff that was more than twice as large as Kellogg’s with 200 rooms, had burned a decade earlier due to a raucous party, something that fueled the rumors.

Starting over On November 7, 1901, state engineers signed off on the bridge and Patrick Moynehan shifted his attention to resurrecting the hotel, which was funded in part by regional titans, including printing magnate and co-founder of the New York-based bibliophile Grolier Club Robert Hoe III, and built over a three-year period.

Upon its completion in 1904, it was christened the Adirondack Hotel and again positioned itself as a destination point for downstate tourists who were still spending entire months, usually August, in the North Country.

The owners expanded and added a dining room wing and the addition of a second dormer in 1914 cemented the facility’s now familiar twin-peaked visage.

That autumn, the hotel sold to Lewis and Margaret Jennings who, aside from a blip in the mid-1920s when ownership was passed off to a Tupper Lake couple, operated a resort “offering excellent rooms, light, airy and attractively furnished” with “universally good meals with first-class service” until 1946.

New blood In June 1990, Carol Young, a Buffalo resident and former tavern owner, purchased and renovated the hotel, which had laid vacant for several years, with her then-partner, Art. They reopened that fall with the goal of transforming the venerable old building into a year-round business for the first time in its history.

The hotel, which had achieved centenarian status, was in rough shape when they bought it, partially because the former owners only kept it open two months per year as a result of the shift in vacation habits and economic trends, something that exacerbated the deterioration.

Young hired every able-bodied man in town to clear out the third floor, where typewriters, receipts and other memorabilia dating back to the 1940s had been piled up to the rafters.

A fourth floor remains preserved in time with antique toilets and Armstrong flooring, awaiting a sprinkling of pixie dust, rolled-up sleeves and elbow grease.

Art and Carol snagged the Adirondack Economic Development Corporation’s 1992 Adirondack Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the first business to do so. AEDC initially assisted them in their 82 | North Country Living Magazine | Vol. 3 No. 2

Famous Hotel Guests

N

o history of the hotel is complete without a list of famous guests. Boldface names that have passed through over the years include Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan in the 1920s. New York Governor and 1928 Democratic Presidential candidate Al Smith stopped in on a campaign swing with Albany mayor John Thatcher that year. Jack Dempsey came for lunch in the 1930s. Albert Einstein chowed down in the 1940s with pals, “probably while looking for a summer place,” said Long Lake Town Historian Abbie Verber. Mickey Mantle was a guest in the 1980s and threw balls in the backyard with the kiddos.

And that says nothing of the litany of ephemeral pop culture celebrities, people like John Wayne and Mick Jagger.

Several years after taking ownership, said Young, a gentleman came in and told her about his grandmother. She had tuberculosis as a teenager and her family sent her to work in logging camp from Malone.

She arrived in Long Lake with two other young men, both of whom were dressed very well, and was terrified upon reaching the floating bridge. The gentleman reassured her, took her arm and ushered her safety across.

In the morning, someone knocked on the woman’s door. It was one of the finely-dressed chaps.

“President McKinley would like to have breakfast with you,” he said.

endeavor and only did so after carefully reviewing their business plan and community impact.

“After I sold the Cobblestone and moved back to Buffalo in 1983, I really wanted to buy the hotel,” said Young. “I had a home here, I spent my summers here and its closure wasn’t making a good statement for the town.”

Young believes the hotel is a symbol of the town’s history and needs to be preserved.

“I took on the challenge,” she said, “I’m a risk taker and this was a big one. I wanted to live in Long Lake and the only way to do that was to have a project.”

Over time, Young invested over $1,000,000 into the hotel over the purchase price of $400,000.

In order to be open year-round, Young installed two new boilers and a septic system. The kitchen was later renovated and the rooms revamped.

Countless other improvements followed.

Lucci had the hotel painted a dull brown with a layer of weatherproof creosote. Young had wanted to paint it white, but that proved to be impossible, so the intended color scheme was reversed — it’s now spruce green with white trim, custom-made Continued on page 84

Young added two apartments on the second and third floors and renovated the guest rooms, which now number 18, nine on each floor. The private rooms have new bathrooms, some with original marble sinks, and are equipped with a blend of furnishings from the hotel’s long lifespan paired with modern touches. Five on each floor look out onto the lake.

Downstairs, the diner, replete with sleek stools and leather booths, was ripped out and replaced with a gift shop. The main dining room and sitting rooms remain — they are also dotted with relics of the past, like cast-iron stoves, old-fashioned pie racks and WWII-era Czechoslovakian chairs — and are accented with new additions, like an expansive deck and Carmine’s Brooklyn BBQ, a summertime mainstay that sees Young’s husband, Carmine Inserra, churning out chicken on the side deck for those lazy hot nights.

Over the years, Young strove to develop a yearlong business that would sustain the lack of sustained economic activity and keep local folks on the payroll.

In the winter, that brutal dead season, this was bolstered by snowmobiling, an industry that Young strove to revitalize through her work with local organizations.

With their efforts, she said, the industry expanded in the region, giving the hotel an additional economic boost.

On this slushy Saturday afternoon in February, riders hopped back on their sleds and accelerated off into the horizon, which by now, had faded from a bleeding blue into pink and violet before dissolving, and the riders gave way to families driftin in to gobble down nuclear-hot chicken wings and gourmet pizzas paired with regional beers, was a testament to that.

“Keystone of the community” For 20 years, the hotel had its ups and downs, but nothing that could have spelled its demise.

That is until the 100 Year Flood on April 28, 2011 when the lake overflowed after days of turbulent rain. Between 9 and 11 a.m., the water rose 22 inches up; it creeped up the porch and lapped against the floor.

“There was no record of anything like this happening here over 150 years,” said Inserra. “The terrific rainstorms, lots of snowstorms — those two things combined with the open dam on Forked Lake, it all came together in one day.”

If the National Guard hadn’t loaned them a pump, the Adirondack Hotel would have gone of the way of the Sagamore, the Prospect House and the hundreds of others lost to the ages.

“We were pushing out 700 gallons and taking in 900 per minute,” said Inserra. “If we didn’t have those, the building would have been destroyed.”

Once the water receded, the veranda had to be rebuilt and both boilers were shot. A fundraiser, held that September to cover what the deductible didn’t cover, raised $25,000 to defray repairs.

“That shows a lot of love out there for the hotel and the town,” said Young. “They don’t want to see us not here.”

She likened the hotel to the town’s keystone: “Without the keystone, there isn’t anything — and that’s what the town is.”

“It remains an important cultural institution,” said Terrie, the author and historian. “The Adirondack Hotel has always been a real central place for the Long Lake social life and that should never be overlooked.”

A year-long business plan wasn’t on the radar. Area residents tended not to dine out at the time and winter tourism wasn’t yet a sustained industry. Life remained tough.

Frances and Arthur fell in love and married.

Shortly afterwards, Margaret came along on August 8, 1933. She was followed by Steven, Claire, Johanna and Jim. Margaret fondly recalled Johanna and Jim as two devilish peas in a pod prone to ensnaring themselves in all matters of mischievous situations, from getting stuck on the roof to wasting rationed wartime supplies.

Margaret Jonasch née Jennings lived at the hotel for nine summers from her birth until 1942 when World War II plunged the country into belt-tightening mode.

The lifetime area resident, who is now retired, has fond memories of spending summers at the hotel and recalled an idyllic childhood growing vegetables for patrons on a farm across the lake, interacting with the guests and spending time with her pops.

“I knew every inch, but was never allowed into the bar.”

Margaret said her grandfather maintained a back bar during prohibition with what people still refer to as a “magic staircase.”

The family lived in comfy quarters on the second floor wing. It included a living room, three bedrooms and a sun porch.

“We didn’t have a kitchen but we didn’t need one,” she recalled.

Young Margaret had a fondness for roast lamb, fish and the fresh vegetables from the backyard patch.

“My mother used to give me birthday parties in the dining room and I thought that was nice,” she said. “My father and I would each lunch together and I always had a nanny.”

“Their luggage would be in trunks,” she recalled.

“My father had an express business and would haul the luggage to the hotel, the Sagamore and the other hotels. There was a taxi service that would pick up guests on the train.”

Earlier tourists had to make the 19-mile journey from the station by stagecoach. Guests coming from Raquette Lake and Blue Mountain Lake would make the trip via steamboat, including the Buttercup, which met a grisly end.

“Local guides were uptight because the hotels took away their business,” said Zullo, the Indian Lake historian. “And the Buttercup ended up at the bottom of the lake.”

That was in 1885.

During this time, state engineers drastically altered the natural landscape and shaped the current lakefront layout.

In 1934, the lake was pushed back with the construction of a dam that flooded the 45 acres of “I had a wonderful surrounding marshland, creating what is now known as Jennings Pond, named for Grandfather Lewis, on childhood and liked living the west wing of the hotel. there. I was so spoiled.”

Three sandy embankments were created: one from Pine Island to Middle Island, another to the Sagamore - Margaret Jonasch née Jennings shore and a third from Pine Island to the shore of the hotel’s property.

A T. rex named “Sue” makes the Montshire Museum of Science its home

hen asked why most children fall in love with dinosaurs, science expert Bob Strauus came up with three intriguing reasons: “1.

Dinosaurs are big, scary—and extinct, 2. Dinosaurs get to do what they want, and 3. Dinosaurs leave really cool skeletons.”

Well, you don’t have to be a science expert or a kid to discover that the most iconic dinosaur skeleton ever found is indeed very cool—and it’s now a full-time summer resident of the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vt. 88 | North Country Living Magazine | Vol. 3 No. 2

A89 All summer long, the world’s largest Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever discovered will be on display as part of a special exhibit called “A T. rex Named Sue.” The exhibit features a cast of the most complete T. rex ever discovered.

The current Vermont exhibit was created by the Field Museum, Chicago and made possible through McDonald’s.

“At 42-feet long, 3,500 pounds, and 12feet tall at the hips, this fully articulated cast skeleton is the keystone piece of this traveling exhibition which also includes replicated dinosaur fossils, video footage, free-standing interactive exhibits and colorful graphics,” said the Montshire in a news release. “Sue died at the age of 28.”

“Sue” the dinosaur made international headlines back in 1990 when amateur fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson found the specimen in the Cretaceous-age Hell Creek Formation near Faith, SD. Shortly after the discovery, the T. rex acquired the name of its discoverer.

“Montshire visitors get hands-on look with replicas of Sue’s arm bone, tail, rib and teeth, engage in interactive activities, learn how the T. rex saw, ate and sniffed out prey, and view footage showing the changing perceptions of T. rex over the past hundred years,” said Beth Krusi of the Montshire Museum of Science. “And ‘Sue’ is the largest and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex ever unearthed and is one of the most significant fossil finds to date.”

According to Krusi, Chicago’s famous Field Museum didn’t want to see ‘Sue’ fall into private hands; the fossil was just too important to be a collector’s fetish. So, at the fossil’s celebrity-filled auction in 1997, Field officials stepped in and purchased the 67-million-year-old fossil at for $8.4 million.

“This set the world record for the highest 13 m

price ever paid for a fossil,” Krusi says.

According to Krusi, paleontologists have found only four T. rex specimens with 60 percent or more of the original skeletal material. “‘Sue’ is at least 90 percent complete— only a foot, one arm, and a few ribs and vertebrae are missing,” says Krusi. “Because of its near completeness, the specimen has Specimen # FMNH PR2081 (“Sue”) AMNH 5027 BHI 3033 (“Stan”) BMRP 2002.4.1 (“Jane”)

presented the scientific community with a variety of new evidence, and with it Field Museum scientists made important new discoveries about the biology and evolution of Tyrannosaurus rex.”

As most school children already known, Tyrannosaurus means “tyrant lizard”— that’s from Greek word “tyrannos” or tyrant; likewise, the Greek word “sauros” means lizard is a genus of coelurosaurian theropod dinosaur.

The first fossil fragments of T. rex—its long dagger-like teeth—were found in Colorado in 1874. Later, more impressive fossils were found in Wyoming. Today, remains have been found in various rock formations in several western states. The iconic beast lived during the upper Cretaceous Period,

The T. Rex was among the last non-avian dinosaurs to exist before the Cretaceous– Paleogene extinction event. A large asteroid impact in Yucatan, Mexico, is believed to have hastened the end of the giant dinosaurs—although they actually never completely died out; dinosaurs live on the form of modern birds.

“The discovery of ‘Sue’ ranks as one of the most important fossil finds ever, with tremendous educational value for scientists and the general public,” said Krusi.

“Tyrannosaurus rex is the most widely recognized dinosaur in the world. Although it was first named almost a century ago, much remains to be understood about this remarkable animal. Carnivorous dinosaurs recently described from the Southern Hemisphere are of similar, or perhaps slightly larger size, but T. rex remains one of the largest flesh-eaters to have ever inhabited the Earth. With its extraordinarily powerful jaws and massive serrated steakknife teeth, T. rex still dominates popular perceptions of the Age of Dinosaurs.”

While T. rex is best known as being a savage, meat eater, there’s an ongoing debate among fossil researchers regarding whether or not this giant was a predator or a scavenger, like the modern African hyena.

Another bigger mystery surrounding T. rex is whether or not it looked like a reptile, with lizard skin, or was it more birdlike— that is, covered with colorful feathers over the lizard skin.

“We now have numerous specimens of a whole variety of species of feathered dinosaurs, with some species known from hundreds of specimens preserving feathers,” says Dr. Dave Hone, a lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London, specializing in dinosaurs and pterosaurs. “Moreover we can trace the evolutionary patterns of feather evolution and there’s a relatively

simple transition from relatively basic filaments in basal species, to larger and more complex feathers in later forms... (but) was Tyrannosaurus covered in feathers? I’ll disappoint people in advance and say that we don’t know for sure.”

The exhibit “A T. rex Named Sue” runs through Sept. 7, 2014, at the Montshire Museum of Science. It is the first time the exhibition has been to the northern New England/North Country region.

Admission to “A T. rex Named Sue” is free with museum admission. $16 for adults, $14 for children 2-17, and free for Montshire Museum members and children under 2 years of age.

The Montshire Museum of Science is located in Norwich, Vt., and open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BLACKSMITHING WORKSHOP: Well-made tools can be a pleasure to use and pleasant companions as you go about your garden tasks. In this class, participants will make the two most used tools in the garden, a trowel and a hoe.

These will be forged from salvaged steel and attached to wooden handles. You can choose between a few styles of hoe and design the size and shape of your trowel. Handles will be provided. You will return home with tools that fit your hands and new tool making skills: 9am-4pm. Runs ‘til tomorrow.

FIBER ARTS WORKSHOP: Amish Shadows is a traditional quilt pattern, popular in the Northeastern US since the late 19th century. A versatile pattern, it allows quilters many options in size and design. Depot Theatre

Essex Community Concert Series

This community concert series was formed in 1990 to maintain and program the use of the Cross Memorial Pipe Organ, a gift to this community on Lake Champlain from a longtime Essex resident. All performances will be held at the Essex Community Church located one block from the Essex-Charlotte Ferry. During the summer, the ferry operates late enough to accommodate visitors to the evening programs.

Meadowmount School Of Music

The Meadowmount School of Music is a sevenweek summer music program for students striving for careers in classical music.

Meadowmount’s concerts in Westport, Essex County, feature guest artists, faculty and students in solo performances and chamber music.

Concerts are every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday evening at 7:30pm from June 27 to August 6, 2014, including a benefit on Friday, August 1 and Sunday, August 3 featuring Joseph Silverstein. Cellist Lynn Harrell will also perform daily beginning on Monday, August 4.

CONCERT: PossumHaw, a dynamic, original bluegrass and country-folk quintet from Burlington, Vermont, is slated to perform.

Since 2004, the band has evolved to combine awardwinning, evocative songwriting and singing with top-notch bluegrass instrumentation. On the stage, PossumHaw offers stellar vocal harmonies, original music, and impressive acoustic instrumentation. The outfit has produced four full-length albums: Waiting and Watching (2014), Fortune’s Name (2010), Madtom (2007) and Split-rail (2005). The band has appeared at the Champlain Valley Folk Festival, First Night Burlington, Higher Ground, the Long Trail Festival, Schroon Lakes’ own Adirondack Folk Music Festival, and at venues throughout the Northeast: 8pm.

CONCERT: Spanning three generations of vocalists, The Flipsydz create a sound from the golden oldies that has the ‘youthful tone’ of today’s generation. The group concentrates on performing a cappella (without instrumentation) often evoking memories from the groups of the 50s and 60s singing doo wop on the street corners of Philadelphia and Brooklyn. Members include accomplished operatic singers, choral group members and solo artists who have performed in Las Vegas as well as internationally. Though their backgrounds vary, the members of The Flipsydz share a common love for a cappella doo wop music, and creating wonderful harmony together.

They are able to recreate the ‘authentic’ sounds you will remember, while also adding their own unique style to some of their repertoire. CONCERT: Beartracks, who will perform tonight, began as a trio in 2004. Legendary dobro player Junior Barber convinced his cousins, Tom and Julie, to make the switch from playing traditional country music in clubs to playing bluegrassoriented material at festivals around the Northeast. The main focus of the group was the sibling vocal harmony of Tom and Julie and Junior’s unique stylist approach to playing resonator guitar. Although not a traditionally structured bluegrass group, the trio gained acceptance and a solid fan base at festivals throughout the Eastern US and in Canada from Calgary to PEI. Scott Hopkins, an experienced bluegrass musician, joined the group in the summer of 2012, bringing a driving banjo style and, at times, adding a third part harmony to the group. The addition of the banjo brought a much more traditional bluegrass sound to Beartracks, although you will still hear some Hank and Merle in their sets. When Junior decided to retire in June of 2013, they searched far and wide for a musician that would fit with the group both on a personal and professional level. Finally, in late July 2013, the perfect fourth bear was located at a festival in Danby, VT. Harry Ralph, an extraordinary fiddle player and a great person, decided to accept the offer to become a permanent member of Beartracks. It is evident to all who see Beartracks perform that the members of Beartracks love the music, each other and the fans: 8pm.

Samuel Torres, who is from Bogota, Colombia transcends the conventional definition of a percussionist. He’s a fully developed musician in the true meaning of the word — an artist who passionately follows his intuitions, ever broadening his horizons while further honing his wide-ranging, world class skills.
