Alice T. Miner Museum exterior wall part of ongoing renovations By Natasha Courter

CHAZY — The exterior of the Alice T. Miner Museum may seem a bit different the next time you drive by. The old stonewall out in the front has been completely demolished, said Ellen Adams, the museum’s director and curator. A new wall has replaced the old, which has created quite a stir of excitement within the community. “It’s very unusual for anything to change and I think that’s why it’s getting attention,” said Adams. “It’s very exciting for us as a museum to see it being rebuilt because it had fallen into very serious disrepair, and it
didn’t really keep up the appearance that we wanted.” The new wall now has a more modern look, which includes a flat marble top finish. Even with its new appearance, it hasn’t lost the 1920s elegance that the old wall contributed to the estate. Restorations to the almost century-old property are in full swing, and the wall is just one of the many improvements to be completed. “This is the first step in a multi-year project to revamp the grounds of the museum,” said Adams. Other improvements to the property that have been completed include the replacement of the wooden window shutters and the
old copper roof. The shutters are now a dark green color that still keeps up with aesthetics. “Our focus on the past has been on the collection and the building,” Kirk Beattie, museum treasurer, said. People have had such a positive reception to this work because they love the Miners and what they have brought to the community of Chazy, he said. “We’ve always looked to maintaining and resorting objects in the collection, and now that a lot of that has been done, we are looking more to the exterior to the building, such as the gardens and parking.” There is a plan to create a new parking lot

CHAZY — It was like Christmas in August for children attending Chazy Central Rural Elementary School. The school has upgraded their old wooden playground into a new play area made up of bright red, green, and yellow plastic and metal equipment for the children to enjoy. It is now safer for the kids, said Jenny Langlois, second grade teacher at Chazy Central Rural Elementary. “We were dealing with a lot of splinters,” she said. “It was dated and it was time to get a fresh one if we could.” State and taxpayer funds were used to help complete the project, said Chazy Central Rural Elementary Principal Robert McAuliffe. They were also used to help improve the school’s wifi system and swimming pool. “We got a lot of good use and money’s worth out of the old one (playground), but it was time for a new one,” said McAuliffe. TOWN SUPERVISOR Current supervisor Jeff Menard (Republican) will be running against former supervisor Democrat Cory Ross for the position of town supervisor. Menard was born and raised in the Town of Mooers. For the first 35 years of his life, he ran the family dairy farm until he left July 1992 to go work at Dragoons Farm Equipment as a counter parts person. Besides being a member of the Mooers Volunteer Fire Department for 27 plus years, he ran for Mooers town justice in November 1996, won and served on that seat until running for supervisor in 2013. Ross is the owner and founder of Ross Funeral Home that he started in 2007. He served on the town board and also held the position of town supervisor before Menard.
