teah@denpubs.com SARANAC Ñ Jan Couture, the Town of Saranac historian, will host the History of Saranac Tour April 26 in commemoration of five Saranac residents who helped capture John Wilkes Booth.

Led by Judge Advocate Joseph Holt, the five area Civil War soldiers Ñ David Baker, Godfrey Phillip Hoyt, Martin Kelly, Lewis Savage and Abram Snay Ñ and the other Ò LincolnÕ s AvengersÓ tracked down Booth after he murdered Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865.

The Program for African Growth through Education, Incorporated, or PAGE, Inc., is helping to build a school in the West African country of Burkina Faso.

“We were moved to do this first personally because I come from this country,Ó PAGE board president Jean OuŽ draogo said. Ò I feel a sense of responsibility in a way to, within the limits of my own ability, give back and try to provide a space for those who might not get that second chance.Ó The Plattsburgh-based group is also led by vice president Mohamed Djerdjouri, secretary Robert Ackland, treasurer Eileen Barns, outreach and marketing officer Marguerite Adelman.

Relay for Life to twist into SUNY Plattsburgh April 24-25

denpubs@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH Ñ SUNY PlattsburghÕ s Colleges Against Cancer Relay for Life 2015 Ñ taking place April 24-25 at the college’s fieldhouse — will incorporate a board game theme with the tag line, Ò Life can be a twister, but sorry cancer, weÕ re in it to win it.Ó “That’s what cancer is,” said Joan Sterling, an official with the American Cancer Society. Ò ItÕ s a game of life.Ó The American Cancer Society helps organize relay events across the country to raise awareness and research money to fight the class of diseases.

Plattsburgh students organizing the event plan to style the fieldhouse bleachers like board games. Nicole Bureau, president of SUNY PlattsburghÕ s Colleges Against Cancer, or CAC, said the design will offer plenty of opportunities for a Ò photo-op moment.Ó BureauÕ s mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last November, was able to attend the relay last year. Ò It was actually a really exciting thing because it was one of the first times where she wore a scarf and she felt comfortable to be around that many people,Ó Bureau said.

Attendees at this yearÕ s event will have an opportunity to show off their flexibility by playing on a “life-sized” Twister board. Other activities include sumo wrestling and a dunk tank.

In addition, there will be performances by Kickline, Dance Corps, Plattsburgh State cheerleaders, Platty Slack and Minor Adjustments. New performers slated include the Bluegrass club, the Korean Association (K-Pop) and the PSU Hula Hoop Crew.

In 2014, the chapter brought its carnival theme to the fieldhouse. As opposed to last year when students were cutting off relay participantsÕ hair for donations, this year the chapter will bring in local professionals to cut.

As of early April, 50 teams and 735 participants registered for the relay. This yearÕ s goal is to raise $50,000. An estimated $21,000 had been raised as of April 6 while donations are still being accepted.

Michael Cashman is the assistant director of the Center for Student Involvement and a Plattsburgh Councilor. HeÕ ll be a featured speaker at this yearÕ s relay. Cashman has been participating in Relay for Life for many years and served as its first adviser.

Initially, he was drawn to participate in the relay because he said he was Ò motivated by the stories of others and the mission that the students embodied.Ó Ò But I relay now because last year I lost my stepfather to cancer,Ó said Cashman, who will speak alongside his mother.

“As I reflect on what Relay for Life has been and what it has become over the last number of years, IÕ m really inspired by how Colleges Against Cancer have made this a movement with over a thousand participants and just raising thousands of dollars,Ó Cashman said.

Sterling, the American Cancer Society official, echoed CashmanÕ s enthusiasm for the cause, saying students have done a tremendous job promoting the event.

Gibson Brothers to receive SUNY honorary fine arts degrees

PLATTSBURGH Ñ Renowned bluegrass musicians and SUNY Plattsburgh alumni Eric and Leigh Gibson, known as the Gibson Brothers, will be honored at the collegeÕ s spring 2015 commencement Saturday, May 16 with honorary doctorate degrees in fine arts.

Eric, the older brother, earned a degree in English in 1993 and began a teaching career at AuSable Valley Central School in Clintonville.

Leigh earned two bachelorÕ s degrees from the college: the first in communication mass media in 1994, and the second in English in 1996.

They grew up on a farm in Ellenburg Depot,

emerging as bluegrass musicians in the late 1980s when they began as teenagers playing festivals and local venues like the Palmer Street Coffeehouse in Plattsburgh.

It was while Eric was teaching that life as a weekend musician took its toll. Taking a leave of absence from the district, he and Leigh, along with band member Mike Barber, devoted themselves full time to making bluegrass music their careers. It worked, and Eric never returned to teaching.

Recording contracts followed, and then, in 1998, the Gibson Brothers received their first

IBMA nod, the Emerging Artist of the Year Award. That led to more honors, more recognition and, in October 2014, the Gibson Brothers played for the first time on the stage of the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minn., alongside Garrison Keillor during Ò A Prairie Home Companion.Ó They have since returned, performing again in January.

Both brothers were Ò humbledÓ by the honorary degrees. Ò IÕ m so honored by the SUNY doctorate; I feel I owe a great deal to (SUNY Plattsburgh),Ó Leigh said. Ò My life was shaped by my time in Plattsburgh.Ó He met his future wife, Alison Õ 96, while on campus.

But he also found his experience opened him to new experiences and a variety of personalities and cultures. Ò I learned how to work with people who maybe didnÕ t share my opinions and to understand where they and their opinions came

from,Ó he said.

Eric, who also met his future wife, Corina Õ 95, while at SUNY Plattsburgh, concurred. Ò I loved SUNY Plattsburgh. Loved being here; loved every minute of it,Ó he said on a recent visit to campus. “I flourished here. It was like breathing fresh air and drinking fresh water Ñ it sustained me,Ó he said. Ò Plattsburgh allowed me to remain grounded in what I consider deep and honest roots,Ó Leigh said. Ò Though I couldnÕ t recognize it at the time, it was all I could ask for from an education.Ó Some 900 SUNY Plattsburgh students will be eligible to graduate at commencement exercises this spring, which feature two separate ceremonies. The first, beginning at 9 a.m., will be held for students majoring in programs within the School of Education, Health and Human Services and the School of Business and Economics. The second ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. for students in the School of Arts and Sciences.

teah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH Ñ The North CountryÕ s own Blue Collar Bistro, AlekaÕ s Restaurant and LivingoodÕ s Restaurant & Brewery will be participating in an annual state-wide dining out event.

The 12th annual Dining Out For Life will take place Thursday, April 23 from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. with more than 70 Capital Region restaurants participating to raise awareness for the Alliance for Positive Health. Ò ItÕ s really important to keep HIV and AIDS awareness visible,Ó said Cindy Snow, co-owner of Blue Collar Bistro. Ò We need to make sure groups like the alliance keep the message out there and keep the awareness out there.Ó For lunch, Blue Collar Bistro will be doing lunch specials (yet to be determined), along with their other well-known menu items such as burgers, sandwiches and soups. Ò WeÕ re known for our soups,Ó Snow said. Ò We usually have two or three soups every day in the kettle, so IÕ m sure weÕ ll have some great soups for that day.Ó With the purchase of a soup and a sandwich, a burger or one of their other popular items, 20 percent of lunch sales will go toward the Alliance for Positive Health. Ò Our mission here at the Blue Collar Bistro is really to be a large part of the community,Ó Snow said. Fair should serve up a little liquid gold

E

ssex County lawmakers have signed off on the sale of alcohol at this yearÕ s county fair.

Cheers.

But last yearÕ s debut rollout, despite heated debate between the supervisors, fell flat.

Fairgoers had to follow a trail of breadcrumbs to the vendors, who were consigned to the groundsÕ netherworld somewhere between the exhaust fumes from demolition racers and an animal paddock.

When they got there, patrons appeared to be unaware that many local brews were on tap, not just a trip on the Silver Bullet.

Hnnngggh.

For such a fiery debate, the execution was decidedly anti-climatic.

While discussion this year was watereddown Ñ Controversy Liteª Ñ weÕ re afraid of an equally-diluted repeat.

This year, organizers need to get wise to the regionÕ s bubbling craft beer biz and bill our local producers as a marquee act, putting them on even footing with whatever whizbang ride or entertainer theyÕ ve got lined up.

These mom and pop brewers are some of our regionÕ s brightest assets, creating jobs and generating local spending in a state that has recently been ranked dead last in economic competitiveness.

Like the local food movement, interest in craft beers, ciders and wines is crackling.

On a national level, beer production rose 42 percent last year.

To accommodate the trend and encourage local economic development, the state passed a series of laws to lessen regulations on farm breweries, cideries and wineries.

Since 2012, 57 new farm breweries opened across New York.

To land the licenses, these operations must pledge to use specific levels of locally grown ingredients, a measure that drives demand for crops like hops, which can be grown by the brewer or purchased from a local grower.

Additional economic ripples come from the off-site retail outlets, restaurants and tastings that are permitted as part of these operations.

Across the board, the increase in alcohol-related start-ups in New York reflects a state hungry for keeping their drinking local.

Microbreweries, or operations who are capped at producing a maximum of 75,000 barrels annually, have skyrocketed by 160 percent in the past four years.

Wineries are up 50 percent from 2011; farm wineries, up 90 percent, while farm cideries and distilleries and brewpubs have also multiplied.

This is all good stuff.

So whatÕ s it got to do with us?

These entrepreneurial spirits are fermenting throughout the North Country, too.

Groups like the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce, for instance, are working to connect producers to the public with initiatives like the Adirondack Craft Beverage Trail, a do-it-yourself tour showcasing 14 breweries in Warren, Washington and Saratoga counties, with more to be added later this year.

Within Essex County, a vibrant scene has sprung up, with breweries like the Blue Line in Saranac Lake, Paradox in Schroon Lake and AuSable Brewing Company in Keeseville, just to name three, adding color and vitality to the gastronomic landscape.

Fair organizers need to hop on board and embrace what we already have and harness these drivers of economic development Ñ not run away from them.

A big part of this is using the annual fair as a magnet.

We understand that for local officials, it’s a big step to simply authorize the sale of alcohol, much less aggressively promote its usage.

We also understand the concerns of the skeptical Ñ substance abuse remains a pervasive problem in the North Country.

Since the fair is designed to serve as a family-friendly event and model for the youth, we should safeguard those elements and ensure that its character remains consistent with those values.

We get the law enforcement concerns, too.

But the argument that the Agricultural Society needs to rely on alcoholic beverage sales or wine-tasting events to maintain revenues is a straw man: ItÕ s not about luring in locals with suds, but taking pride in our local products and sharing them with folks across the region.

Doing so would be a win-win across the board and would also drum up advance interest for the regionÕ s additional beer-related events later that fall.

ThereÕ s no reason why a showcase of local producers shouldn’t attract scores of aficionados from across the region, who will take their tipples and lift all boats while doing so.

Maybe the fair will even be eligible for the recent $3 million in craft beverage grant programs the state rolled out last year for promotion and marketing.

Anti-smoking ads do make a difference To the Editor: Is anyone else disturbed by the Tips From a Former Smoker ads on TV? The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) just announced a new campaign that started March 30. IÕ ve seen one new ad so far: JuliaÕ s story.

Julia smoked for more than 20 years before developing colon cancer at age 49. Her Ò tipÓ is to have a strong stomach. She explains that if you get colon cancer and have to have your colon removed, you will need to have an ostomy bag taped to your stomach to collect your waste. She talks about always being worried that the bag will smell or leak when she is in public. Julia is incredibly brave to speak so honestly, but as I watched I wondered É will her story and this campaign really make a difference?

The good news is evidence suggests that these ads do make a difference. According to the CDC, smokers report that the ads inspire them to try to quit. And we know that more smokers are really trying after seeing these ads because there is an increase in the number of calls to the Quitline.

Take, for instance, the last campaign that launched in July 2014. During the three months prior to that campaign, the highest number of calls in one month from Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton counties combined was 206.

In July, there were 242 calls (NYS Quitline). ThatÕ s a 15 percent increase!

So as much as I donÕ t want to see the painful ways that tobacco has effected peoplesÕ lives, IÕ m thankful people like Julia are willing to share their stories.

They really are making a difference and saving lives.

ILH has disdain for dental office To the Editor: Most of you are familiar with the story of Ticonderoga Dental. You know about InterLakes Health firing members without cause or warning.

You know how they abandoned thousands of dental patients with now reasonable plan. You know how they selected which employees to keep without considering guidelines of seniority or those much likely to operate a successful clinic. You can formulate your own explanation for their actions, they never adequately shared any plan with us.

Now, the hospital has expressed its ongoing disdain of the dental patients of Essex County.

While I recognize the right Dr. Moss has to move on to a new position, he and the hospital gave the patients one dayÕ s notice when the article appeared in the Times of Ti Thursday, March 26.

It is typical of how the hospital informs the public after there is any chance that positive action can be taken or even discussed. Unfortunately, dental health care in the North Country is driven by administrators who have no hands-on experience of patient care, nor any experience of dental clinical administration. The actions are described as Ò not being personal,Ó but for those suffering the results it is pitiful and very personal.

When we are displaced on Friday, Feb. 13, we spent one week in shock.

Then we went to work.

With the help of community friends, we found location in Ticonderoga.

Renovations began. Then we negotiated to obtain the wasted equipment of ILH. Obviously, we are not above using shame as a tactic! We knew there was a full schedule of patients that ILH could not responsibly treat with one doctor, so we asked for the charts of those patients, or even the names of the patients who had seen Dr. Cepelak and Debbie so we could contact them, but ILH refused.

Despite the fact that within weeks the hospital knew exactly were our new practice would be located, it was not unusual for members of the ILH Dental staff to knowingly give disinformation.

On May 15, 2014, we were already seeing patients in our new location, just two blocks from the hospital on Lake George Avenue. We used the same fee schedule as ILH and we did accept Medicaid and Fidelis, the only new provider in Essex County in years. In 10 months, we have seen over 1,000 different patients, including 500 Medicaid and Fidelis patients.

We are busy, happy and here to stay!

But, there is a dark truth now in Ticonderoga.

No one can treat all of the patients abandoned by ILH. Within a week of the meeting I had with Rod Boula (acting CEO of ILH) about the possible closing of the ILH Dental, they were informing the patients that they were no longer scheduling patients (they had stopped accepting new Medicaid and Fidelis patients when they eliminated Dr. Cepelak) and referring them to Ticonderoga Dental and describing them as Ò Dr. CepelakÕ s patients.Ó Sorry, they may have been Dr. DepelakÕ s patients on Feb. 13, 2014, could have been Dr. CepelakÕ s patients on May 15, 2014. They stopped being such when ILH refused to give them us that time.

Now patients are calling Ticonderoga Dental, some cursing at us because Ò where are they supposed to go?Ó I ask the same question, but any problem is not caused by us. We will try to serve every emergency patient we can, regardless of your insurance status, the best that we can. Medicaid and Fidelis patients must realize that for every irresponsible patient who fails to appear for two appointments, there are five who would like to be accepted into the practice.

For every patient who complains about our fees, your insurance uses as basis may not be the Ò usual and customaryÓ (higher) current fees. The fees accepted by providers from Medicaid and Fidelis are about 1/3 of our usual fees. They may be 1/5 of fees of other providers in the area. If I am asked to redo a procedure performed at ILH in the last two years, I am not paid at all. I would still have overhead for the procedure, with no income.

No business can operate under those terms.

My advice is to go to Inter Lakes Health Dental Clinic and ask for your records. Bring them with you when you go to Ticonderoga Dental or somewhere else. If they suggest that some other dentist may be coming, still demand your records. You may want to go somewhere else, or need to go somewhere else because no one knows what ILH may do.

Clarification to What if no one came To the Editor: During the first week of April, a Letter to the Editor was printed by various news media.

Titled Ò What If No One Came?Ó , the viewpoint, which expressed a very serious concern, detailed the current aging membership of our department along with the ever-increasing demands placed on our declining roster and most importantly, making the point Ò What if no one came?Ó The article incorrectly stated that our sister department, Keene Fire Department, was to become a paid agency.

This was in error and the Keene Valley Fire Department regrets this inaccuracy.

ESSEX Ñ The Essex Community Fund (ECF) is accepting applications for 2015 grants. ECF is a component fund of Adirondack Foundation and offers grants to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, schools, churches, and local government activities operating in the town of Essex. ECF awards grants in support of community beautification, historic preservation, culture, the arts, education, and programs for youth and senior citizens.

Joseph Bebo to present book

Community Garden meeting planned

PLATTSBURGH Ñ New garden members, returning gardeners and others interested in renting a Plattsburgh Community Garden plot should attend the annual meeting and plot lottery Saturday, April 25, in the upstairs meeting room of the Plattsburgh Public Library, 10 a.m.

The garden group operates a 60-plot garden in Melissa L. Penfield Park and a 14-plot garden at the Plattsburgh Housing Authority on South Catherine Street. The fee is $25 per plot, which includes access to water, compost and tools in a caring community dedicated to organic gardening. Experienced and beginning gardeners are welcome. donÕ t know about you, but a lot of things remind me of song titles or lyrics. Music is special for me and for many. I played it for decades on the radio and listen to it daily in my old age. I wonÕ t expound on the psychological benefits. I’m sure youÕ re aware of how music makes you feel.

YouÕ re no doubt familiar with the phrase: Ò Music has charms to sooth a savage breast.Ó Most folks credit Shakespeare, but the words were written

by William Congreve for the 1697 play Ò The Mourning Bride.Ó

by Gordie Little It’s the first line of the play and has been misquoted thousands of times. Perhaps you know someone who substituted Ò beastÓ for Ò breast.Ó Hey, nobodyÕ s perfect.

Once I get a song in my head, it repeats over and over almost ad nauseam, sometimes for days. Does that happen to you? This month, April songs have been on my mind.

Can you name a few in your memory banks?

One such that I can never hear enough was the title tune in a 1957 movie entitled Ò April LoveÓ , starring Pat Boone with Shirley Jones.

Boone, wearing his famous Ò white bucks,Ó made a number one hit of it.

Another one that comes to mind is Ò April Showers.Ó It dates to 1921 and I can hear Al Jolson crooning it in my head. I played it often for my Sunday Morning of Solid Gold audience back in the day. It was written for the Broadway musical Ò Bombo.Ó Jolson recorded it several times and I also found at least three dozen other recordings of that great song.

We must mention Ò April in ParisÓ with its wonderful line, Ò I never knew the charm of spring. I never met it face to face. I never knew my heart could sing.Ó Did you know it was written for the 1932 Broadway musical Ò Walk a Little FasterÓ ?

Freddie Martin recorded a hit version in 1933.

I have known a number of people with the name April. One of them I dubbed Ò My little angel.Ó Some of you might recall that we worked day and night in a chilly outside tent with April Lavalley who desperately needed a double-lung transplant some years ago.

Sadly, she left us before the surgery could take place. I think of her often and drove past her school in the northern tier of Clinton County the other day to see how tall the tree had grown, which we planted in her honor.

Another beautiful young woman named April Lavalley grew up in our community, moved to the west coast and became a prominent attorney. Some time back, I turned on the TV and almost fell off my recliner as I watched April and her fiancé appearing on a game show.

IÕ ll list a few more famous Aprils and you can add your own: April Hunter, April Lee Hernandez, April Peterson, and April Ross.

There are many more. April was a very popular girlÕ s name in the 1980s. I scoured the Internet and learned the original word meant Ò second,Ó but any Aprils I ever knew were Number 1.

Although the sun is brilliant as I write this on April 13, this month also puts me in mind of some favorite rain songs. Go ahead. You blurt out some titles while I list a few: Ò Baby the Rain Must FallÓ , Ò Blue Eyes CryinÕ in the RainÓ , Ó Come Rain or Come ShineÓ , Ò DonÕ t Let the Rain Come DownÓ , Ò It Never Rains in Southern CaliforniaÓ , Ò Rain on the RoofÓ , Ò Rain Rain Go AwayÓ , Ò Raindrops Keep Falling On My HeadÓ , Ò Rhythm of the RainÓ and that wonderful old folk song, Ò It AinÕ t Gonna Rain No More.Ó Then, of course, there is that ditty starting, Ò Playmate, come out and play with meÓ we intoned as little kids. How did you sing it? We used, Ò Shout down my rain barrel,Ó while others substituted Ò cryÓ or Ò lookÓ for the word Ò shout.Ó Kaye and I love to sing and dance to the old songs. It keeps our marriage young. Happy April to every one of you. Ò And weÕ ll be jolly friends for ever more.Ó

TnT ‘Tony and Trevor’ Tournament to be held in Plattsburgh Rugby tournament honors two remembered SUNY Plattsburgh students

teah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — At the rugby field, remembrance plaques and trees have been planted to remember Anthony Ò TonyÓ Santandrea and Trevor Green, rugby players who died while students of SUNY Plattsburgh. Ò The tournament started as TnT, for Ô Tony and Trevor,Õ members of the team who passed away as students,Ó said Christopher Broere, assistant rugby coach. Ò Since then, for as long as the rugby team has been around, weÕ ve had a tournament.Ó The SUNY Plattsburgh MenÕ s and WomenÕ s rugby clubs invite teams and guests from New York, New England and Canada to participate in and attend the annual TnT MenÕ s and Women’s Memorial Rugby Tournament April 25 in the field behind Memorial Hall at SUNY Plattsburgh. Ò RugbyÕ s not only a growing sport here on campus, but itÕ s also a growing sport internationally,Ó Broere said. Ò I think people would enjoy coming out and getting to know the game.Ó Currently, menÕ s teams include SUNY Plattsburgh MenÕ s A-side, Saranac Lake Mountaineers MenÕ s, SUNY Potsdam, Union College, Paul Smiths College, St. Lawrence and SUNY

Plattsburgh Alumni.

As for womenÕ s teams, they include SUNY Plattsburgh WomenÕ s A-side and Saranac Lake Mountaineers WomenÕ s.

“This year has been difficult with finding women’s teams,” Broere said. “But we’re still hopeful that we will find additional teams.Ó Registration deadline is April 19 and the cost is $250 for each team. Brackets and format will be determined by registration.

EMTs and restrooms will be available at the field location, and showers and locker rooms are available at Memorial Hall. The tournament is free and open to the public.

All proceeds from this tournament are donated to the Anthony Santandrea Endowment Fund through the Plattsburgh College Foundation.

The school established SantandreaÕ s scholarship fund, through which over $1,000 is give out annually to a recipient with knowledge and love of the outdoors, in his memory after being tragically killed in the summer of his senior year in 1995.

Santandrea, an environmental science major from Guilderland, was a leader on the rugby team and a brother of the former Theta Kappa Beta Society. He spent his summers working at a boy scout camp in the Adirondacks, and he loved canoeing, backpacking and outdoor sports. Ò The tournament was known as the Tony Tournament,Ó said John Bradley, a SUNY Plattsburgh staffer who used to be associated with the tournament.

The tournament changed its name to Ò TnTÓ after the death of Green three years later.

Green, from Saratoga Springs, died June 26, 1998 when he dove into the Boquet River in Elizabethtown, hit his head on a rock and drowned.

Both studentsÕ memories live on with both the rugby teams and SUNY Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh selects new business and economics dean

denpubs@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH Ñ Plattsburgh State University welcomed Dr. Rowena Ortiz-Walters, department chair of management at Quinnipiac University, to be the new dean of school of business and economics. Ò ItÕ s very atypical for somebody to move from department chair into deanship,Ó Ortiz-Walters said. Ò ThereÕ s usually a couple more steps in between so obviously itÕ s exciting for me to be able to leap frog through stuff and be able to move into deanÕ s role and that the school really has confidence in me to do that.”

Dr. Ray Guydosh, who is the current dean of school of business and economics, returns to the faculty in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. About a year ago, Guydosh notified that he intended to step down from his position, so faculty had Ò ample notice to find a successor,” said President John Ettling.

A consulting firm was hired to help conduct the search for Guydosh’s successor. Its first order of business was to create a description of the position to generate nationally and produce a list of prospective candidates to reach out to and possibly encourage applying for the position, which is how Ortiz-Walters was contacted. Ò The larger schools like Cornell, Michigan and Columbia have very large business schools and their deans make a whole lot more money,Ó Ettling said. Ò Our niche Ñ if thatÕ s what it was — was to find people who want to work, who care less about the money than working at a school like this.Ó The search committee was headed by Holly Heller-Ross, dean of Library and Information Technology Services, and made up of students and faculty brought in last summer to facilitate the search and meet and evaluate candidates.

To help the search committee narrow the extensive pool of applicants down to 10-12, the consulting firm then invited the candidates to fly to Burlington and meet with it. Ò ItÕ s incredible we could get all of them in the middle of winter Ñ a bad winter Ñ to Burlington for this interview,Ó Ettling said.

While meeting with applicants, the search committee had to select four candidates to invite to campus. Out of the four selected, three visited the campus after one withdrew.

After the visit, the provost asked the search committee to give in a ranked list of candidates who they found most acceptable.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. James Liszka was the hiring authority and made the decision, with assistance, on who to give the position to.

Along with Liszka, Ettling got to meet candidates for the position. Ò She (Ortiz-Walters) was my favorite,Ó Ettling said. Ò Dynamic, young, energetic and with the credentials that would convince the faculty that sheÕ s one of them.Ó Ortiz-Walters earned her bachelorÕ s of science degree in chemistry. Ò As you grow up, you kind of want to be somebody who helps people. For me, that manifested itself into becoming a medical doctor and I thought well I have to do some sort of science,Ó Ortiz-Walters said.

The new dean explained she Ò could never cut anybody up,Ó so medical school wasnÕ t her next move.

Looking back on her time as an undergraduate, she stated the curriculum was so focused on the technical aspects no one really discussed how manage your career and what it looks like in the work place. Ò As a student, I donÕ t think you realize that there is a business component to even the technical center or engineering center,Ó Ortiz-Walters said. Ò I was just kind of observing how those contrasted to business side of what we were doing and it intrigued me a lot.Ó

Ortiz-Walters then pursued her M.B.A degree in technology management at the University of New Haven before receiving her Ph.D. in management from the University of Connecticut.

As the new dean of the school of business and economics, OrtizWalters will be overseeing 38 fulltime faculty members and the undergraduate enrollment of more than 1,000 students. Her duties include seeing the curriculum is taught, presiding over faculty and making decisions on promotions and tenure. She is not expected to teach her first year, but she has inquired about teaching in her second semester, said Ettling. Ò IÕ ve always been huge on learning, but I will always be a lifelong learner,Ó Ortiz-Walters said.

Program helps students with job search Natasha Courter

denpubs@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH Ñ Ò If a student is in a gang-like environment, they will gain a gang-like attitude. If students are in a work like environment, they will gain a work-like attitude.Ó ThatÕ s the philosophy underpinning the Work Experience Program, said Lance Falcon, the organizationÕ s chief executive.

The program is designed for high school and college-age students who are looking for jobs, but do not have any job experience.

The great thing about this program, said Falcon, is that it not only helps students gain work experience, it helps them to build character.

The work experience students gain by volunteering for a nonprofit organization allows them to gain intangible leadership skills, teamwork, respect, persuasion and meditation, said Falcon.

It also allows them to work with others who stem from different walks of life.

Building character, instilling skills and assisting the community are just the icing on the cake. Promoting the heritage of the area and providing a safe environment for the work projects are among the groupÕ s additional goal. Ò WeÕ ve had students with parents who remarked that their self esteem is so much higher,Ó Falcon said. Ò In todayÕ s society, you have a lot of people who say you canÕ t do this, you canÕ t do that, and we try to put the students in an environment where they can accomplish something and we help them with that.Ó In a testimonial on WEPÕ s website, a family commends the program for helping their disabled daughter gain work experience when no other program would give her a chance.

According to the letter, WEPÕ s gave the daughter mentioned in the testimonial more confidence that she had never had before, and it allows her to step out of her comfort zone.

The parents hope that the volunteer program will be brought to more school so other students can experience what they and their daughter were lucky enough to find.

VOLUNTEERING Helping the students find themselves is just one part of the programÕ s mission.

WEP also aims to help businesses out with their fundraising and volunteering. The students help the community and vice versa just another goal set forth by the program.

The volunteer program is broken up into five groups. The first is daily duties, and these are tasks that run everyday operations of businesses like museums.

Second are activities, which are pre-planned for the entire year, for example, the assistance in setting up booths for com-

munity events.

Third is planning, which the students are actively encouraged to be involved in to help with selecting activities.

Fourth is marketing, where students will work with photos, videos and editorial content that is used for WEPÕ s social media.

Last is fundraising, which is done mostly by the students who set up events for local organizations. Ò ItÕ s a community endeavor,Ó Falcon said.

The program is currently on a mission to collaborate with the arts center in a project where the students will help to set up a photo gallery to benefit both the student workers and the community.

WEPÕ s is looking for interested personnel who want to help to change the lives of the students of the program, according to Flacon.

Potential volunteers are welcome to WEPÕ s town meeting in Peru April 15 at 7 p.m. in PeruÕ s Town Hall.

The group is collecting and providing educational materials.

They’ve held fundraisers, sessions, film festivals and membership drives. But they need help in both donations and awareness.

In 2011, PAGE received $330,000 from the U.S. State Department Youth Leadership Program Grant with Francophone Africa in partnership with SUNY Plattsburgh. OuŽ draogo said a good foundation has been laid, Ò and weÕ re now at a point where we have a building.Ó Burkina Faso has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. More than 70 percent of the adult population is illiterate, and the rate of school enrollment is 44.6 percent.

Students face many obstacles. For example in 2013, the ninth grade national exams had a 22.56 percent success rate, and the 12th grade national exams had a 35.8 percent rate, according to the groupÕ s website. For the 70 percent who donÕ t pass, they can

Stops featured on the tour include Redford, Peasleeville, Cadyville and Saranac cemeteries where four out of the five Saranac residents were buried (Savage was buried in Vermontville), spending a considerable amount of time in Saranac Cemetery because thatÕ s where the monument is for the local Civil War soldiers. Ò Along the way, weÕ ll give some history of Saranac,Ó Couture said. Ò But what weÕ re going to be talking about, more or less, is more along the lines of who they were, what they did before and what they did after the Civil War Ñ making these people real people.Ó The cost of the tour is $15 per person and $25 per couple. It costs $12 and $20, respectively, for Clinton County Historical Association members. A Stamp Cancellation will be held the same day at the Saranac Town Hall from 11 a.m. to noon.

Lily has responded very well to positive reinforcement and is a very quick learner. She is already much better on her leash and is enjoying her inside time with the staff. She likes to play with balls and will fetch for you after she gets to know you. LilÕ enjoys pleasing her people! After only 15 minutes of office time she really relaxed and started to engage with us. Lily is going to bond very quickly with whomever she goes home with. She will let you know if someone is in your yard and she will do well in a home with a fenced in yard. Like we said, she is very smart... so much so that she enjoys opening up her kennel and getting out!!! Lily has lots and lots of love to give and will be a great canine companion with just a bit of patience, love and positive reinforcement. Her kittens are weaned and she is now spayed, current on vaccinations and has tested negative for FeLV/FIV. Hootie likes other cats, kids and she even likes dogs!
