Lawsuit dismissed against village ROUSES POINT — The village of Rouses Point has learned the United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, affirmed the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by Susan Clarke, Gary Clarke and WWBI-TV Inc. against the village of Rouses Point, Mayor George A. Rivers, code enforcement officer Michael Tetreault Jr., and Brian Pelkey. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision ruled the earlier dismissal of the case by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York was correct.

The lawsuit was filed in response to action taken following a June 6, 2006 fire in which the WWBI-TV building — the former Holland Hotel — was badly damaged. The Rouses Point Volunteer Fire Department, as

well as many neighboring fire departments from Vermont and Canada, responded.

According to a press release issued by the village, after the fire was brought under control, “it was evident the southern portion of the building was a threat to the public, as it appeared to be in danger of collapse.” The village authorized the southern portion walls to be made safe by demolition. The Clarkes and WWBI-TV contended, in their lawsuit, the village’s actions in rendering the building safe after the fire violated their constitutional rights.

In the end, the court confirmed the action of the village, Rivers and Tetreault in protecting the public well-being did not violate the Clarke’s constitutional rights.

New antique shop offers something for everyone

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — After 40 years of collecting various antiques and dishware, Joyce Samonek hopes others will share in her passion.

“I have collected so many [antiques] and they are so beautiful,” Samonek said.

“I’ve just come to the point where I need to share these things.”

Three weeks ago, Samonek opened Morningside Antiques and Fine Art in the Morningside Bed and Breakfast she operates.

“I’m all excited about opening it,” she said. “Excited about telling people and exchanging their stories. Because whoever comes in who’s interested in these kinds of things, has a store of their own that relates to them.”

“It’s a nice chit-chat time,” Samonek added.

Samonek has antiques from across the country and

Canada. She also has a special section with items from Africa, where her son, Shaun, currently lives and works.

“I’ve only collected things that I love,” she explained.

“I have boxes and boxes.

And, if someone falls in love with a piece that I love, it’s like sharing love. It’s a lot of fun for me.”

Some of the items Samonek offers she considers “practical,” with many serving a dual purpose, including a lamp which can be used as a champagne bucket, and a candle holder which can be turned over to be used as a candy dish.

“I’ve tried to keep a good range for different kinds of people who come in,” Samonek explained. “Some things are as low as $9, other things are as high as a couple thousand.”

“I moved from California to Vermont and I just got really intrigued with all this old stuff,” Samonek explained of when she first began collecting antiques. “I researched just about everything I have. And, if I have it and you want to know more about it ... I can send you a synopsis of its history.”

CHAMPLAIN — Despite being from a small town, author and journalist Glenn Stout has proven writing isn’t just in the big cities.

A resident of Alburgh, Vt., Stout made an appearance at Northeastern Clinton Central High School and Middle School Nov. 10.

Stout, who is one of a few authors to write under the pen name Matt Christopher — a former sports writer — is best known for his own sports writing. He gave classes of both young and old potential journalists an inside look at his life and career as a journalist.

He talked about his break into journalism, stating he helped uncover the real story behind how the Boston Red Sox manager in 1907 died. Originally, it was reported as a suicide, but after Stout did some research, he found the manager was actually involved in a blackmail scheme involving the manager ’s wife. This article was sold to Boston Magazine, where many articles followed about the Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins — starting his career as a sports writer.

The article eventually gave him the opportunity to write for young adults under Christopher ’s pen name.

“These books allowed kids who don’t like to read a genre that they could enjoy and relate to,” Stout said.

Stout no longer edits those books, however, he plans to start his own series in October.

While writing as Christopher, Stout continued writing sports stories about the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs.

He also became an editor of a yearly-published book that displays the best-written sports articles for that year.

Stout told the students that being from a small town was not anything to be afraid of — a person can get anywhere they dream of by doing the work. With Stout being a native from a small town outside of Columbus, Ohio, he could relate to the students, yet his dreams still came true.

During the lecture, Stout said some of his latest work has been some of his best work. He co-authored a book about the clean-up crew of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, titled “Nine Months at

Dodge Library hopes to keep growing into the community

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com WEST CHAZY — For a library that has been around for more than 100 years, director Linda Dupee is surprised of how many people in the community don’t know it exists.

Dupee, who took over as director in August, is hoping to “breed new blood” into the library, spending hours trying to come up with ideas to bring in community members.

“Hopefully, we’ll do little things and it’ll keep growing,” she said. “I don’t know what the community wants and what they expect.”

“Our community is more impoverished than the city

of Plattsburgh is,” Dupee added. “It’s a little more spread out. We don’t get a lot of people that come in here, but my thought is libraries will never go away.”

Despite having a small budget to work with, Dupee said she is doing whatever she can to help the community.

“We have these two computers here,” she explained, “which we have access to several databases that could help the community. We just bought a brand-new laptop, so that will afford some people some privacy.”

During her five months at the library, Dupee has found only a handful of regulars frequent the library.

“I can tell you who those people are,” said Dupee. “If

somebody else comes in .. I don’t know what to do. It’s out of my zone. And, I don’t want that to happen.”

Dupee is looking to the community for input of what they want to see in their library.

“I’d love a book club here.

I’d love a game night here,” she said. “I’d love to have movie night. I’d love to have story hour.”

However, Dupee knows she needs the people to step

forward and be apart of the library, in order for the events to continue.

With the way the economy is today, Dupee hopes people will turn to the library for their reading materials — because she considers reading to be “the greatest sign of wealth.”

“I think [reading] is something that you and you alone have,” she explained. “It’s never taken away from you.

It’s a privilege.”

“[Reading] opens up a world that you can escape into,” Dupee added. “You can learn anything. You can imagine anything. It’s just a different world. It fulfills all your fantasies and expectations.”

Dupee is currently looking for volunteers to help at the library. She hopes to reorganize the books and put them in a database.

“I don’t have a Friends of the Library group ... I’m the

only employee here,” she explained.

If interested in assisting Dupee, or for more information, call 493-6131. The library is open Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Dupee added she is looking for a book stand for softcovered books. Anyone interested in donating one or helping to raise money for one, contact the library.

etting a new computer for Christmas? Here are a few things to consider before surfing the Internet.

Before dismantling the old computer, take a few minutes to download the latest version of your favorite anti-virus software and burn to a disk or copy to a flash drive. I like Avira (www.free-av.com) and have used it for years with great success.

Tear down the old PC and set up the new one but do not plug in the network cable yet. Boot the computer and go through the initial set up but hold off on activating Windows when asked to do so — the network cable is unplugged so there is no connection to the Web. Now, remove the junk the manufacturer shipped with the PC. Uninstall anything that is promotional or trial that is not personally useful. If you do not plan to use something, go to the Control Panel find the “Add/Remove Programs” area and uninstall it.

Next, install the anti-virus software and check the security settings for the firewall. Don’t restart the system — just power it down, hook up the network cable and boot it back up. The Web should now be accessible.

Meditation and stress relief for healthy living

oronary heart disease patients who use stress-relieving meditation techniques reduced their rates of heart attack, stroke, and even death by nearly 50 percent, according to Caregivershome.com.

A nine-year study focused on 201 men and women averaging the age of 59 who were diagnosed with narrowing arteries. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups — one group received health education information, including dietary advice. The other group practiced stress-reducing transcendental meditation techniques. Both groups continued to receive medications and medical care.

The study, conducted at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, found a 47 percent reduction in blood pressure, heart attacks, stroke, and psychological stress in the meditating group.

In the words of Dr. Robert Schneider, director of the Center for Natural Medicine and Prevention at Maharishi University of Management, “Previous research on transcendental meditation has shown reductions in blood pressure, psychological stress, and other risk factors for heart disease, irrespective of ethnicity. But, this is the first controlled clinical trial to show long-term practice of this particular stress-reduction program [reducing] the incidence of clinical cardiovascular events —that is, heart attacks, strokes, and mortality.”

Schneider went on to say the use of transcendental meditation was akin to the introduction of a new medication for heart disease.

What does this mean to caregivers? Both caregivers and care receivers may benefit from such stress reduction techniques combined with physician-prescribed medications. Caregivers who experience high levels of stress can incorporate meditation and deep-breathing techniques into their routine, and can even do them with the person in their care! There are many books and DVDs currently available, as well as several informative Web sites. A particularly good site to try is www.selfgrowth.com. as this ever happened to you? You finish filling your cart with the week’s groceries, head to the checkout lane and place your items on the conveyor belt. The cashier announces the total and you hand over a nice stack of coupons. Then, the cashier pauses. You hear the words, “I don’t think we take coupons from the Internet.” The cashier hands them back to you and you ponder what to do next.

While most of my shopping trips run smoothly, occasionally even your Coupon Queen encounters a cashier issue or two. So what do we shoppers do?

One of our biggest tools to deal with checkout problems is the store’s coupon policy. Most stores have a written policy that states exactly how they handle coupons presented in the checkout lane. Many stores post the policies on their Web sites and others have a copy at the customer service counter in the store itself. What’s in a coupon policy? Information that shoppers can use to better plan our shopping trips! Coupon policies state specifics such as, We accept Internet coupons, We accept expired coupons or We accept competitors’ coupons. Everything we need to know about what kinds of coupons our stores should accept is spelled out for us right in the store’s policy.

Armed with this knowledge, well-informed shoppers know exactly what coupons our stores should accept! The most commonly heard issue with cashiers does involve the store’s acceptance of printable Internet coupons. If you’re told that the store does not accept them, ask to see a copy of the store’s coupon policy. Most grocery stores and supermarkets do accept Internet coupons that are legitimately printed and are not photocopies.

Unfortunately, due to the rise in coupon fraud, stores are getting more stringent about the kinds of Internet coupons that they will accept. Most legitimate Internet coupons contain a unique ID or barcode identifier and several other key features that stores use to ascertain a coupon’s validity. And any time the Coupon Information Corporation, a nonprofit organization that monitors coupon fraud, identifies a new, counterfeit coupon, it sends stores an alert to watch for coupons known to be fraudulent or counterfeit.

However, when a fraud alert goes out, sometimes it has a rip-

ple effect. Our stores learn a new counterfeit coupon has been spotted in circulation. Instead of homing in on the specific coupon mentioned in the alert, some cashiers may find it easier not to accept any Internet coupons. This not only hurts shoppers, it hurts stores, too, since the large number of Internet coupons are legitimate and perfectly fine for the store to accept. Would you like another piece of the cashier/coupon policy puzzle? I’ve heard from many cashiers that they get very little training on their store’s coupon policy. This puts coupon-savvy shoppers in an unusual situation. It’s possible that you may be more familiar with a store’s coupon policy than the cashier is.

If you find yourself in this situation, never force the issue. Simply ask the cashier to check the store’s policy with the manager. You can politely let the cashier know that you’ve read it to make sure that all of the coupons you’re presenting are acceptable.

A cashier issue most likely stems from a little confusion that isn’t the cashier ’s fault at all. A cashier who questions your coupons may simply be trying to protect the store and do what they believe is right. Going gluten-free during the holidays

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com According to the Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign, more than two million people in the U.S. face the challenges of this disease.

Those with this disease, which attacks your immune system, are unable to eat foods containing gluten, as it will injure the lining of the small intestine.

According to information provided by registered dietician Deborah Kelleher, gluten is the protein part of wheat, rye, barley, and other related grains.

For Ashli Cromp, finding gluten-free foods is an everyday “chore.”

Cromp, who was diagnosed with Celiac disease three years ago, has found eating to be something she can’t do spontaneously anymore.

“I have to check labels. I always have to plan ahead. Going out to eat with friends makes it difficult,” Cromp explained. “I have to do some research before and see if the restaurant has gluten-free options.”

Cromp has also found the holidays to be a difficult time when it comes to her special diet.

“I usually make something for myself. For Thanksgiving I made my own pie,” she said.

“If I go somewhere for dinner or for a party, I bring my own dessert because generally dessert is out.”

Another difficult aspect of Celiac disease is the smallest cross-contamination of food with gluten can cause a reaction.

“I live with two people that don’t have Celiac disease,” she said. “I have my own toaster just to be on the safe side, so that their bread isn’t touching the same toaster that I put my bread in.”

“Cross-contamination is something people just don’t think about,” she added.

Cromp hopes people will consider those with this disease when making food and desserts in the future.

“The knowledge that people had three years ago is much less than it is now,” she said. “So, I’m hopeful that five years from now, 10 years from now, it’s something that almost everybody is going to know about.”

According to Kelleher, the Food and Drug Administration is already working to make it easier to find gluten-free foods for those who require them by establishing a voluntary mandate to have companies clearly label “gluten-free” on packaged food.

“Even though it’s a voluntary mandate, many manufacturers are abiding by it because it’ll help people buy their product,” Kelleher explained.

For Cromp, when it comes to the food her friends and family makes, she has learned to pick her battles.

“I try not to push it too much on people because it is a little bit of a hassle,” she said.

“It kind of depends on who I’m with and how comfortable I am asking them to change the way they’re doing it.”

However, Cromp has found one way of getting by when she’s uncomfortable asking someone to change their recipe is to find out what they’re making “and make my own version of it.”

Kelleher suggests those requiring a gluten-free diet to bring fruit trays to a party, during the holidays, or to visit various Web sites available for gluten-free dessert options.

“Learn how to modify,” she said.

Convenience store’s model train set mesmerizes young and old

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com MOOERS — After 60 hours of labor, Michael Deneault can now see his passion circling his store every day.

Deneault began assembling a wooden track made of hardwood flooring back in October, which would become a railway for his model train set.

“I always liked trains,” said Deneault.

After seeing a model train set in a store downstate, Deneault decided to make his own, which he could put in his store, L & M Convenience Store.

“There’s nothing around [here] like that,” he said. “I like to be the first one.”

Although the train will remain in the store year-round, Deneault wanted to make sure it was complete by the holiday season. He succeeded, having it finished the week before Thanksgiving.

Now, he sees people coming in daily to look at the train set, which is one 110 feet of track around the bakery section of the store.

“I had a kid who came in the second

day probably, when we had it going,” recalled Deneault. “The kid didn’t want to leave. His mom said, ‘Would you shut the train down so I can get him out of here?’”

Deneault has seen many other kids react the same way, with one realizing he wanted his grandmother to buy him a train set for Christmas.

“I did this mostly for the kids,” he said. “I enjoy it myself. I have a lot of older people who enjoy it.”

Deneault added he’s seen a lot of older men come into the store, who recall their own train sets from their childhood.

What’s unique about the train set, besides the fact it can pull 20 boxcar attachments, is what is written on the boxcars. Deneault explained all of the businesses they purchase goods from for the store, have the opportunity to take one of the boxcars and put their logo or business name on it.

“I bought the train and then I bought the boxcars ... for the salesmen,” said Deneault. “The people we buy from ...

Mooers Senior Housing offers three vacancies

Watson Memorial Senior Housing, located on U.S. Route 11 in Mooers, has three vacancies they hope to fill soon.

MOOERS — In the 20 years since its inception, the Watson Memorial Senior Housing is facing a problem it’s never seen — three vacancies.

According to Steven Sample, president of the nonprofit apartment complex, more commonly known as the Mooers Senior Housing, the vacancies all surfaced around the same time.

“It’s always been rented,” he explained. “We haven’t had that many vacancies. We don’t have a lot of turnover.”

As a nonprofit, Sample said it’s very important to fill the apartments as soon as possible.

“For some reason we’re having a hard time to lease them,” Sample explained. “We do have to generate revenue so we can maintain the facilities.”

Although the apartment building is considered senior housing, according to the organizations by-laws, the apartments are not limited to seniors.

“Our rates are very competitive — $375 a month. Including heat and utilities,” said Sample. “It’s a nice value. It’s a nice little community. There’s some pretty neat people there.”

currently live in the building to be a close-knit group, often keeping their doors open to other neighbors.

“It’s a safe place to be,” he said.

The apartment building offers a common room, which can be used for family gatherings and other events, and is where people eat when Meals on Wheels comes every day. “[The building] is nothing fancy,” Sample said. “There’s not tennis court or indoor swimming pool. It’s a place to live, a place to stay.”

There are one- and two-bedroom apartments with cable and Internet access for rent, each having their own kitchen, dining room, living room and one bathroom. There is also a laundry room, and both elevator and stair access to all three floors.

With the current vacancies, Sample said the organization is taking the time to “spruce them up.”

“We’re putting new flooring in them ... and we’re painting them and putting new stoves in two of them,” he said. “We don’t have a big turnover, so this is sort of unique. We took the opportunity to do some renovation work, which should be done in a week or two.”

Mini Spinach and Artichoke Quesadillas

pound slices from Cook’s Bone-in Spiral Sliced Ham 6 ounces cream cheese, whipped 1 cup sliced sharp cheddar cheese 1/2 cup red bell pepper, sliced into thin strips 6 6-inch spinach flour tortillas

10 8-inch flour tortillas 1 box Omaha Steaks Spinach and Spinach Artichoke Dip 8 ounces cheddar cheese, grated 8 ounces Jack cheese, grated Preheat oven to 400ºF. Thaw dip over night in refrigerator or in the microwave on high for 5-6 minutes. Spray baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Using 4-inch diameter biscuit cutter, cut 3 small tortillas out of each tortilla. This can be done quickly by stacking the tortillas. Lay out 15 of the 4-inch tortillas on baking sheet. Mix grated cheddar and jack cheese together. Place 1 tablespoon of mixed cheeses on each tortilla. Place 1 tablespoon dip on top of cheeses. Top with another 4-inch tortilla, pressing down lightly to flatten. Place baking sheet on lower rack of the oven for 4 minutes. Carefully flip over each quesadilla with spatula, returning to oven for 2-3 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool for 2-3 minutes before transferring to ser ving platter.

Slice ham into 1/2-inch wide strips. Spread thin layer of cream cheese over surface of tortilla. Place t wo strips of ham side by side along lower third of tortilla, extend from one end. Add t wo strips of red pepper, and one slice of cheese each. Fold tortilla edge over contents and roll tightly. Cut into 1-inch pinwheels.

Stack pinwheels in rings one on top of another, decreasing size of each ring until reaching top of tree. Garnish with cranberries, or star-shaped cutouts of pepper.

PREHEAT oven to 350° F. Place 12 2 1/2-inch foil bake cups on baking sheet with sides. Place 1 piece of cookie dough in each cup. BAKE for 12 to 14 minutes or until just baked and light golden brown. Remove cups to wire rack to cool completely. PLACE 1 1/2 cups morsels and milk in large, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH (100%) power for 1 minute; STIR. Morsels may retain some of their original shape. If necessary, microwave at additional 10- to 15-second inter vals, stirring just until melted. Cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes. RESERVE 1/2 cup whipped topping; refrigerate. Combine remaining whipped topping and vanilla extract in medium bowl. Gently fold half of the whipped topping mixture into chocolate mixture. Add remaining whipped topping mixture; mix lightly. Spoon over cookie bases in muffin cups. Refrigerate for 1 hour. FOR GARNISH AND TO SERVE:LINE baking sheet with wax paper. PLACE remaining morsels in heavy-duty plastic bag. Microwave on HIGH (100%) power for 30 seconds; knead. Microwave at additional 10- to 15-second inter vals, kneading until smooth. Cut tiny corner from bag. Drizzle 12 squiggly designs about 2- to 3-inches square onto prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate until chocolate is firm, 5 to 10 minutes. TOP each mousse cup with a small dollop of reser ved whipped topping. With tip of knife, gently remove drizzles from wax paper and insert, standing up into dollops.

CAKE: PREHEAT oven to 375° F. Grease 15 x 10-inch jelly-roll pan; line with wax paper.

Grease and flour paper. Sprinkle a thin, cotton kitchen towel with powdered sugar.

COMBINE flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt in small bowl.

Beat eggs and SPLENDA® Sugar Blend for Baking in large mixer bowl until thick. Beat in pumpkin. Stir in flour mixture. Spread evenly into prepared pan. Sprinkle with nuts. BAKE for 13 to 15 minutes or until top of cake springs back when touched. Immediately loosen and turn cake onto prepared towel. Carefully peel off paper. Roll up cake and towel together, starting with narrow end. Cool on wire rack. FOR FILLING: BEAT cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, butter and vanilla extract in small mixer bowl until smooth.

Carefully unroll cake; remove towel. Spread cream cheese mixture over cake. Reroll cake. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least one hour. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before ser ving, if desired. *Be sure to put enough powdered sugar on the towel when rolling up the cake so it will not stick.

Northern Adirondack’s EXCEL project rejected Superintendent says problems still need to be dealt with

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ELLENBURG DEPOT — With a vote of 453 to 339, the Capital EXCEL Project for Northern Adirondack Central School has been defeated.

The $35.9 million project, which called for health and safety improvements at the school, would have seen $28 million in New York State Building Aid and $825,000 from the EXCEL aid, leaving $7,075,000 to taxpayers.

“I think that it’s certainly tough economic times. It’s tough to put out a vote this time of year,” said NAC superintendent Laura J. Marlow.

Grannis vows to defy APA decision on Lows Lake A

fter the Adirondack Park Agency voted in October to correct a previously, bungled decision to classify both the lake water and lake bottom of Lows Lake as wilderness, DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis decided to turn the other cheek.

During their September meeting, the APA Board of Commissioners had voted to classify the lands, waters and lake bottom of Lows LakeBog River Flow with a wilderness designation by a close 6-4 vote.

The ruling was intended to incorporate most of the waters and the lakebed of Lows Lake/Bog River Flow into the adjacent Five Ponds Wilderness Area. The remainder of the lake was to be classified Primitive, a less restrictive designation that nonetheless prohibits motorized uses.

Following an uproar from local government leaders, combined with the fact the tenure of one of the APA ‘s state designated commissioners term had expired, a revote was scheduled for the Agency’s October meeting.

In the October revote, three of the state agency designees, including Betsy Lowe, DEC Region 5 director, reversed the decision with a 7-4 vote.

The reversal infuriated several environmental advocacy groups who felt the decision betrayed the facts.

Almost immediately, there were rumblings of a potential lawsuit to preserve the protection of the park’s “Finest Canoe Route.”

In the most recent action concerning the Lows Lake classification process, DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis sent a letter to Adirondack Mountain Club Executive Director Neil Woodworth stating: “Effective immediately, the department will manage Lows Lake as a wilderness lake, subject only to existing riparian rights and the limited floatplane access recently provided for.”

Under the threat of potential lawsuit, Commissioner Grannis wrote in the letter to Woodworth: “I am writing to reconfirm the department’s commitment to establishing a wilderness canoe route through Lows Lake as called for in the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan.”

Despite the APA Board’s decision, it appears the DEC commissioner is taking it upon himself to administer Lows Lake under a wilderness classification – even though, based on the APA’s most recent vote, the commissioner ’s promise is not a legally binding agreement.

Grannis told WNBZ Radio it is the agency’s duty to classify all recently acquired lands and the State Land Master Plan allows for waters to be included in classification packages.

However, the commissioners statement is in direct conflict with 74 decision handed down by the APA’s Board of Commissioners.

DEC Commissioner Grannis further promised in a letter to Woodworth: “Effective immediately, the department will manage Lows Lake as a wilderness lake, subject only to

Lows Lake was created when Gus Low created two large dams on the Bog River in the late 1800s. The dams were rebuilt by the state in the 1980’s. The region contains several private tracts on the lake for which grandfathered riparian rights continue to allow motorized use. By no means, does the region’s character remain consistent with wilderness standards.

Motor vehicles are still used to access a Boy Scout Reservation on the lake via a dirt road that circumscribes mile of shoreline. The in

holdings, with their motorized traffic, combined with the numerous man-made structures are inconsistent with a wilderness designation.

The banning of floatplane use on Lows Lake was accomplished when the Adirondack Mountain Club sued the DEC for allowing their continued use on the popular paddling route.

The float plane ban was driven by paddler ’s complaints the noise caused by the roar of the float plane’s takeoffs was ruining the peace and solitude of their “wilderness experience.”

Although floatplanes have serviced the region for decades, providing access for numerous visitors, the state never solicited comments from users of this service in the process of making the decision to reclassify the

Trips into Lows Lake have been described as vital to the survival of the two remaining floatplane operators in the park.

However, the current land use management plan will eliminate floatplane access on Jan. 1, 2012.

With limited access into a comparable fishery, the ban will likely signal the death knell for the only two surviving floatplane services left in the park. It will be the end of an era, as paddlers replace sportsmen as the primary visitors to the region.
