Justus for the Children in need of help as holidays draw near

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SCHUYLER FALLS — David R. Justus is hoping for a Christmas miracle.

This year marks the 40th season he and his wife, Marion, will help provide toys for children at Christmastime through their organization, “Justus for the Children.” However, this year could be the final year of the program.

Earlier this year, the North Countryman first reported how Justus for the Children was beginning its 40th year with an approximately $7,000 deficit.

“We’re still a little bit over $7,000 down right now,” said Justus, who previously noted he and his wife, who operate Justus for the Children from their Soper Street home, had to take out a loan to finish funding the program for the 2009 Christmas season.

“This year is way worse than last year,” he said.

Justus for the Children has fallen financially short due largely to the increased number of people the organization serves, said Justus. When Justus for

the Children was started in 1960, it initially helped only families in the surrounding community. Over the years, it grew to help those throughout Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. And, though that has led to further strain on the program’s bottom line, Justus said he feels it’s important to not turn away any family experiencing hard times, especially during the holidays. That’s because, during his childhood, Justus went without many Christmases. He vowed that when he grew up other kids wouldn’t go through the same thing, if he could help it.

“We want kids to have something under the tree,” said Justus. “It’s important. But, just when we get one loan paid off, it’s time to get another one to start all over again.”

“I don’t want to quit, but I don’t want to dig the hole so deep we can’t get out of it,” he added.

The success of Justus for the Children has relied on the generosity from friends and supporters of the program over the years, including American Legion Post 1619 in West Plattsburgh and members

of the New York State Corrections Officer and Police Benevolent Association.

However, this year, NYSCOPBA members were unable to provide a financial contribution to Justus for the Children, leaving a big gap in the program’s funding.

“That’s at least $4,000 right there,” said Justus. “But, we’re still going to try to pull this thing off.”

The Justuses will continue gathering donations of new and unused toys as the program’s distribution season begins and are reaching out to the community, in particular larger organizations and businesses, to help them in their mission.

“Anything anyone can do will help,” said Justus.

PERU — The Peru Lions Club hosted its 33rd annual John P. Adams Memorial Turkey Trot Nov. 25.

Co-organizer Jim McCarty Sr. said 567 people participated in the Thanksgiving Day event, which consisted of five-kilometer and 10-kilometer races and a onemile fun run and walk.

“It was a cold day, but it was a good running day,” said McCarty.

The event’s one-mile fun run and walk had 96 participants, with Blake Altizer placing first in the men’s division with a time of 5:58 and Ally Post placing first for the women’s division with a time of 7:21.

Toys for Tots heading for Rouses Point Sunday Plattsburgh stop nixed this holiday season

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Train is headed north this Christmas.

For more than 10 years, Sharon Ramsey has sent people down to Plattsburgh from Rouses Point to gather toys from the Toys for Tots train to help the people of the North Country, on behalf of St. Patrick’s Church.

This year, however, the train will be going to Rouses Point instead, this Sunday, Dec. 5, at 4:30 p.m.

“They had called and they were very disappointed. They go, ‘I’m sorry we’re not stopping in Plattsburgh’ and I go ‘Well ,where are you stopping?’ And they go, ‘Well, Rouses Point,’ and I said, ‘That’s okay, that’s right up the street from me,” recalled Ramsey.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Albert Roman, the Albany-area coordinator of Toys for Tots, said the decision to change the stops was based on feedback from local nonprofit organizations.

“It was more convenient to hit more people in Rouses Point than stopping in Plattsburgh,” said Roman. “We’ll be able to reach out to more people by just moving 30 minutes up north and not conflict with anybody.”

Though that may potentially be a concern for

people in the Plattsburgh area, Ramsey noted many people have traveled from the Northern Tier in years past, often returning home in bad weather conditions.

“If there’s a blizzard Sunday, then they only have to go about seven miles,” she said.

Regardless, Ramsey said people are still looking forward to the train’s arrival. And, although Ramsey typically doesn’t go to meet the train herself, she has heard it is quite exciting.

“The train pulls up, and I guess the Marines are there and they have little forms and they just call out the names and I guess there’s kids there and they give them toys and sometimes Santa’s there,” she explained. “It’s quite a big to-do.”

St. Patrick’s Church volunteers typically receive about 50-60 toys from the train, which are in turn distributed to various families in the area.

“It’s to anybody,” said Ramsey. “We kind of want to keep them in this end of the North Country. You can be from Alburg, you can be from Morrisonville, I don’t care.”

Another way in which St. Patrick’s Church helps the people of the North Country is through their annual Christmas Party. This year ’s event will be held in the church’s basement, Sunday, Dec. 12, from 1-3 p.m.

“We have a rummage sale in the spring and some of that money goes towards this toy party,” said Ramsey, who organizes the event. “Eventually, by the end of the season we usually provide

The party, which usually sees about 100 kids, will give out a gift to each child, who will also get to spend time with Santa Claus.

“We want to see as many kids as we can,” said Ramsey. “We definitely will have toys for at least

Children and the Internet Just what is Amanda’s Law?

omputers are ubiquitous. Routinely found at home, school, and the work place, they are as common as a toaster. Jumping on-line to socialize, read e-mail, work on a project or just plain occupy free time now routinely consumes a piece of our day.

Kids are naturally attracted to the activity with the attraction starting at a young age. Many parents believe teaching computer skills to children ranks high on the list of parental responsibilities. They are motivated to give the child an edge with early development of computer skills or simply by the thought of teaching safe and practical use.

No matter what drives the motivation, what is the right time to introduce kids to the computer?

ccording to the Courtland County Area Agency on Aging’s most recent newsletter, Amanda’s Law is a law named for Amanda Hansen, a 16-year-old from western New York State who died of carbon monoxide poisoning at a sleepover in a friend’s house.

The home’s boiler malfunctioned, producing poisonous, odorless, colorless carbon monoxide gas, which reached the sleepover area.

Carbon monoxide is produced when combustible fuel (oil, natural gas, propane, wood, coal, charcoal, kerosene) does not burn completely. It can be produced inside the home by many non-electric sources such as stoves, furnaces, wood stoves, grills and dryers. There is also a danger from sources in an attached garage, such as running lawn mowers, snow blowers and generators or warming up a car.

In order to prevent further tragic deaths from this silent killer, Amanda’s Law went into effect in New York State Feb. 22. The law applies to all residences, both new and existing.

Homes constructed prior to Jan. 1, 2008, retroactive — no exceptions — must have a carbon monoxide detector on the lowest level of the home having a sleeping area.

Carbon monoxide detectors are widely available in home improvement stores, hardware stores and in the hardware section of large department stores.

They are small and easy to install (they plug into existing outlets).

The purpose of Amanda’s Law is to save lives. If you are a home owner, install carbon monoxide detector(s) as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. If you are a renter, contact your landlord or building manager about the requirements for your living space.

ucas is a handsome 11-month-old black and tan shepherd/husky mix who came in as a stray. He absolutely loves to play. Lucas needs a family who is going to be active and provide the necessary level of exercise for him. He’s a sweet dog looking to go home with his new family.

Oliver is a 10-week-old male orange and white tiger kitten. He is such a handsome little fellow and the smallest one in his litter. Oliver is very playful and loves to snuggle.

The ride was beautiful, the weather cleared and we were able to go past Cody’s second home, Silver Lake, where a banner was placed and where family stood waving.

We have many ideas already for next year. I am sad to say that those that said I was selfish and could have had more riders had I chosen the route were the crash site was, need not register or participate next year. This day was and will continue to honor his life, not his death, and for his family to be told it was a mistake not to have the ride through there was unkind.

Keeping those poinsettias

P

oinsettias are a widespread Christmas tradition both for gift-giving and holiday decorating. And even though they are common, they are one of my favorite holiday plants.

Because I like them so much, I find it disappointing many of these lovely plants end up in the trash once the holidays are over. Poinsettias not only make a beautiful indoor plant all year long, but can also be coaxed to bloom again each year in time for Christmas.

Poinsettias like lots of bright, indirect sunlight and prefer humid conditions. Let the soil dry out between watering.

The soil should be dry to the touch. Also, be sure not to let the plant stand water by leaving the saucer filled or letting water sit at the bottom of the foil, if the pot is wrapped.

Poinsettias are sensitive to extreme temperature, so don’t place your plant next to a heater or near a drafty window or doorway.

A daytime temp of around 65 degrees and nights around 60 degrees will provide perfect conditions for your poinsettia.

After it flowers, gradually decrease the water until the bracts, or colored leaves, all drop, then allow the plant to dry out completely.

Store in a place with cooler temperatures (50 degrees).

When it really begins to warm up again in the spring, repot your poinsettia with fresh

soil and gradually start to water and fertilize again.

Around August, cut the plant back by a third.

Don’t prune your plant any later than September, however, if you wish to force it to bloom for Christmas.

Poinsettias bloom in response to shortening daylight hours. If you wish to coax your poinsettia to bloom in time for the holidays, you will need to put the plant in total darkness for at least twelve hours each night for approximately 10 weeks.

Late September or early October is a good time to begin. You can place your plant inside a box or a closet to achieve complete darkness. Be sure to bring your plant out during the day and place it in a bright, sunny spot.

Poinsettias are a beautiful holiday tradition, but your enjoyment of these plants does not have to end when the Christmas tree comes down. With just a little effort, you can derive pleasure from your poinsettia all year long and bring it to bloom for many holiday seasons to come.

Walking through the moth-infested forest A

s I walked into the woods early last week, a heavy frost highlighted the intricate network of spiderwebs crisscrossing the forest floor. They had the appearance of a million, mini-laser beams guarding the woodland scene.

In the morning’s light, their webs seemed to be connecting every bush, tree and fern in the woods. Obviously, the spiders had been busy.

As I took my usual morning watch, I caught a flicker of something white, out of the corner of my eye. Was it a whitetail?

My heart rate went up, but I remained calm. I was being careful not to startle a deer with the quick turn of my head, and I moved slowly to see what was there.

I saw no white, no movement, no whitetails, nothing but the woods.

Again, I focused my attention on the edge of the swamp directly in front of my watch.

It was only a few minutes when the movement of something in the dis-

tance again captured my attention.

I strained my eyes to see what it was, as I slowly raised my rifle.

Viewing through the 5X scope, I discovered what appeared to be a rabble of butterflies gathered on a large rock, located just at the edge of the swamp.

In my mind, I laughed at nature’s trick, where the flight of white can be mistaken for the flick of a tail.

By the time the sun was up, the nearby woods came alive with them.

They were little, white and grey or brown in color. And, they weren’t butterflies — they were moths.

I was surprised to see them in the air, since it was such a cold morning and so late in the season. I also wondered how many other hunters had been fooled by the moth’s endless forest flickers. They certainly caught my eye!

Butterflies vs Moths My first call went out to Sue Grimm of Saranac Lake, the “Butterfly Lady” at the former Paul Smiths Visitors

Center. I explained what I had seen and shared a photo of the specimen. I also told Sue the appearance of moths, flickering white in the deep, dark woods, might soon become the bane of deer hunters She informed me moths belonged to the same family as butterflies — “Lepi doptera” — and continued, “Typically, moths are signaled to come out when both days and nights are warm.

Perhaps they were tricked — it seems disastrous for them to come out now.”

Although, moths outnumber butterflies by a 10:1 ratio, they are the black sheep of the family. Little is known about moths and they are not highly regarded.

Butterflies are beautiful and gather in groups known as rabbles. They come out to frolic on sunny days and provide a whimsical and colorful addition to the scene. Kids make rhymes about butterflies Moths, on the other hand, are motheaten, and gather mostly at night around a back porch light. Moths are furry and dull, the overlooked cousins of the more popular butterfly. Spinning silk seems to be their only redeeming quality.

“But, why,” I asked her, “Are moths flying around at this time of year?”

“Moths hibernate under the leaves, and because they are furry, they are

able to survive colder temperatures better than butterflies,” Sue explained. “The warmer air likely brought them out, or,” she joked, “they must get paid by the deer.”

More about moths Moths are more abundant than butterflies due primarily to their ability to exist in a wider range of conditions, and occupy more diverse habitats.

And, unlike most butterflies, moths overwinter by finding shelter in leaves, debris or in a convenient closet.

As a result, moths are present yearround, and when air temperatures approach around 40 degrees, they can take to the air. Obviously, even the warmth of the morning sun on the forest floor is enough to make them stir.

Another big advantage in moth survival is the early start their caterpillars get on the leaves and grasses as they emerge in the spring, when there are fewer birds around to eat them.

Additionally, many moths have developed the same defensive colorations as butterflies, with “eye spots” on their wings to make them look bigger to ward off predators. Several moth caterpillars have actually adapted coloration that resembles bird droppings, which serve to protect them from other winged predators

Moths are highly adaptable survivors. Some species have even developed techniques that, in effect, help to jam the echolocation signals bats use to locate prey with radar-like precision.

Unfortunately, moths have not developed a natural technology to deal with more modern technology. Bug zappers, those big blue lights used to control mosquitoes and other flying pests, kill a lot of moths. According to experts, “Ninety-five percent of what they attract are moths.”

Plattsburgh Start! Heart Walk top performers honored

By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The American Heart Association has recognized the efforts of top participants in the 2010 Plattsburgh Start! Heart Walk.

On Nov. 17, about 50 members of Heart Walk teams attended a ceremony at Geoffrey’s Pub where they were recognized for helping raise $139,000 with the Heart Walk that took place Sept. 25 at the PARC Oval. Money raised will go to cardiovascular disease and stroke research and educational programs that will raise awareness of preventative treatment of the diseases.

“We are truly delighted to have the opportunity to thank and recognize all of our Heart Walk companies and top walkers who have contributed so much to make this year ’s Heart Walk a tremendous success,” said Keri Mack, corporate events director of the American Heart Association.

The event recognized the Heart Walk’s top walkers, giving out trophies fashioned like miniature Converse sneakers, to the top five walkers. Maxine Barcomb, first-

year walker and co-captain of the Pfizer team, earned the top walker award after she and her team raised $4,525. Wanda Flynn, community teams organizer for the walk, was awarded for being number two walker after she and her team raised $3,475. Flynn and her team — which included her husband, Tom, and Mike and Cheryl Dodds — organized a golf tournament to raise money for the walk.

Rick Martindale from Martindale and Keysor was the number three top walker for raising $2,740 through on-line fundraising.

One special walker was 9-year-old MccAlie Narducci, who was given a special volunteer medal for not only being the youngest fundraiser and volunteer for the Heart Walk, but for her hard work in raising $600.

Narducci first got involved in the walk with her grandmother, Doreen St. Germaine, who has participated in the Heart Walk for the past five years. Narducci and St. Germaine wanted to walk in honor of Narducci’s grandfather who suffered a heart attack in June.

“I’m going to do it again next year and

I’m going to raise more money and go higher next time,” Narducci said.

Top corporate walkers were also recognized at the event for their outstanding donations. Team Pfizer, led by Barcomb and Julie Rowe, was highlighted for raising $15,711 for the walk. Raising the second highest amount was Nine Platt Hospitality team, led by Bob Smith, Julie Kramer and other staff members, who raised $9,475. The CVPH Medical Center Team, led by Colleen Bell,was given an award for raising the third highest donation of $5,520.

AHA executive director Ashley Edwards said, together, the corporate teams were able to raise more than $97,000. Edwards thanked everyone for participating in the walk but reminded everyone the work does not end with this year ’s Heart Walk.

“Heart disease is America’s number one killer, claiming more lives than the next seven combined,” Edwards said. “We are all here today because we believe in the mission of [AHA]. I hope that you realize all the hard work you did to make a difference in the lives of so many people.”

What to know about strength training for teenagers

W

hen done properly, strength training can increase muscle strength and endurance, help protect muscles and joints from injury, improve sports performance, strengthen bones, promote healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, boost metabolism, help to maintain a healthy weight, and improve self-esteem and body image.

When starting a strength training program it is very important teens receive proper supervision and learn proper form and technique. Teens, should begin with a total body training protocol of higher repetitions (ex: 1 set of 10-15 reps) and light to moderate weight, at least twice per week on nonconsecutive days, and progress over time to using heavier weights.

Guidelines for teen strength training • Perform one to three sets of each strength exercise.

• Use enough resistance to complete 10 to 15 properly performed repetitions.

• Increase the weight load by 1 to 5 pounds upon completing 15 good repetitions.

• Use moderate movement speed that emphasizes controlled muscle effort rather than momentum (four to six seconds per repetition).

• Use full range repetitions rather than abbreviated joint actions.

• Train two or three nonconsecutive days per week.

• Train with competent instructors.

• Train safely.

• Train progressively.

• Train consistently.

When it comes to strength training, your options are not only limited to weights or machines. It is actually better for teens to use free weights, bands, and bodyweight exercises since most gym equipment is built for adults and may not fit them properly.

Not only does strength training offer many bonuses to today’s youth, it can put your child on a lifetime path to better health and fitness. I will be holding classes for young women on strength training starting in January. Class size is limited

Jon Fairchild settling in at Chazy Central

CHAZY — With one quarter of the school year under his belt, Jon Fairchild is settling into his new role as superintendent and high school principal at Chazy Central Rural School.

Fairchild lived in Chazy while growing up and attended the school from kindergarten through graduation in 1977.

“You’ve heard the expression, ‘Dying and going to Heaven,’ Sort of fits that,” said Fairchild of returning to his alma mater. “It’s just a very special community and one of the real nice things is the staff and the people that were here when I was a student, they’ve all retired, so there isn’t that role reversal, which can be a challenge.”

Fairchild added he hasn’t seen much change in the school since he attended.

“The rules are almost the same,” he said. “Even the time to get from class to class hasn’t changed. So, when a student tells me they can’t make it from Point A to Point B in three minutes, I know he’s not telling the truth.”

Fairchild took the position at CCRS following a one-year principalship at

Salmon River School and eight-year principalship at Plattsburgh High School, where the class roster was much larger, a difference he finds has its pros and cons.

“I’m a firm believer in small K through 12 schools. Students don’t get lost in the shuffle. Fortunately we don’t have a lot of turnover in students, which is really good to know the students and their families,” he explained. “Downside is we can’t offer the same things we can at PHS. Both situations have staff members that are extremely talented and do a great job with kids and are fun to work with.”

Balancing the roles of both principal and superintendent has also been a transition for Fairchild.

“It gets a little hectic sometimes.

Really struggle when I have to reevaluate myself. Haven’t figured that one out yet,” joked Fairchild.

“For me the biggest challenge is learning the superintendent’s role,” he admitted. “It’s different from what I’ve done in the past. My experience at St. John’s gave me a taste for some of that. The budget and the finances.

It’s a full day.”

Other transitions Fairchild is making is determining what the school can do a better job at.

“Fortunate thing is we do a pretty good job across the board,” he said.

Interim minister to serve Chazy, Rouses Point Presbyterian churches PLATTSBURGH — The Rev. Bruce Dodd of Plattsburgh has been chosen to serve as pastor of Presbyterian churches in the village of Rouses Point and hamlet of Chazy.

Dodd will start his ministry this Sunday, Dec. 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in Rouses Point beginning at 9 a.m. and Chazy Presbyterian Church beginning at 11 a.m.

Dodd, who will serve the churches for a period of one year, has a long history of religious education and service. He was born in Akron, Ohio, to deeply religious parents and was schooled early in the Gospel of Jesus Christ at High Street Church of Christ, in Akron.

Dodd attended the Stony Brook School, and then went on to the University of Pennsylvania and received his bachelor ’s degree in education. After his Navy service, he spent 20 years at the Stony Brook School,

where he served as director of admissions as well as a teacher and coach. It was while the stated supply pastor for Cutchogue Presbyterian Church on Long Island that he received his call to the ministry.

Initially, Dodd enrolled in the New York Theological Seminary and New York University in New York City to better his Bible teaching skills. From there, he was awarded his master ’s degree in pastoral studies for religious education. For the next 10 years, he lived in northern Georgia where he was headmaster and president of two private religious schools.

Dodd was ordained in 1986 and, since then, he has served as pastor of Presbyterian churches in Georgia and, more recently, in upstate New York. His family is made up of his wife, Carolyn, their five children and 14 grandchildren.

“We do have a couple of things we’re starting to look at, but the big thing right now is going to be, as every school in the state is doing with the new regulations for evaluating teachers.”

Fairchild said that goal will probably be one of the main challenges he’ll face during the school year, although he’s also looking at taking on another challenge.

“I’d like to see ways that we can improve our graduation rate,” he said.

“Again, it’s a state-wide initiative, and unfortunately with a small group of kids, it doesn’t take too many kids to not make it to drag the rate down.”

“I’d also like to see ways that we can fine-tune and challenge the upper-end kids more than they are,” Fairchild added. “It’s always hard to find ways and have enough kids that need a particular program.”

Overall, Fairchild is happy with the way the school year has developed so far.

“It’s been a really nice start to the school year,” he said. “The staff, the community, the board of education, everyone is really headed in the same direction. It’s a nice group to work with. Like any other school, we have issues we have to deal with, but most of ours are not critical issues, they’re just things to just keep doing what we do, better.”

Gospel choir to kick off the holiday season ‘Soulful Christmas’ this Sunday at the Giltz

By Anayely Garcia ana@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Five years later, one choir is still bringing “A Soulful Christmas” to people of the North Country.

The State University of New York at Plattsburgh’s Gospel Choir will perform this Sunday, Dec. 5, starting at 4 p.m. in Hawkins Hall’s Giltz Auditorium. The show is expected to last two hours.

“We always encourage everyone to get here early, so we can start at 4 p.m. and at the latest folks are leaving around 6 p.m.,” said the gospel choir ’s director and SUNY Plattsburgh professor, Dr. Dexter Criss.

The gospel choir was founded 20 years ago and it is comprised of mostly students, outside community members, faculty and staff, explained Criss. The musicians, however, are mainly from Vermont.

“We decided that it would be fun to do a Christmas concert, and do Christmas carols and Christmas gospel songs, and that’s how we came up with the name ‘A Soulful Christmas,’” said Criss.

ence, which has never been done before. Another new part to this year ’s show is a solo piece done by a new student director hailing from Trinidad.

“He has performed in front of President Barack Obama and the Queen of England,” added Criss.

Although much advertisement is done in places like Albany, Montreal, Vermont and surrounding cities, most of the attendees are locals.

“Sixty to seventy percent of the audience is from the Plattsburgh community,” said Criss. “It’s definitely more of a community event, probably than most campus performances.”

The show is expected to completely fill Giltz Auditorium, like it has done in years past.

“There have been times when we have sold out [tickets] and it has been standing room only,” added Criss.

New calendar looks at Champlain’s history

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — David Patrick of Colchester, Vt., has been creating calendars since 2003, focusing on subjects relating to the history of the town of Champlain.

Patrick, whose descendants hail from Champlain, recently unveiled his newest calendar, “A History of the Settlements and Early Settlers in Champlain Town: Champlain, Coopersville, Perry's Mills and Rouses Point,” detailing the history of familiar locations in the Northern Tier.

The calendar is the product of three months of writing, research and layout, utilizing photos from Patrick’s own collection and Feinberg Library’s Special Collections Department at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

When developing a calendar, Patrick said he tries to choose “an eye-catching cover photo that people will recognize.” The photo used on the 2011 cover is of the original St. Mary’s wooden church in the village of Champlain, dating back to 1880 — five years before the stone church which stands there today was built.

“There is only one likeness known to exist and every copy I have seen has been of very poor quality and not printable,” said Patrick.

“I was able to find a better image to work with. The cover photo is definitely a collector ’s copy.”

Featuring St. Mary’s also coincides with the church’s 150th anniversary, which was Patrick’s reason for also writing a detailed history of St. Mary’s in the calendar. The calendar also features photos from all four settlements in the town in the late 1700s up to approximately 1840. Locations like the Ebenezer Cooper house and Route 9 bridge in Coopersville, Fort Montgomery in Rouses Point,

and the old school on Church Street in the village of Champlain are among those featured in the calendar, painting a historical look at the Northern Tier.

“I want people to know about this mostly forgotten history,” said Patrick. “The clues are in front of everyone but without the primary sources, it is difficult to interpret them.”

When it comes to future calendars, Patrick said he is “always thinking about potential subjects for the next year ’s calendar.”

“I will start to seriously think about it in winter and may do some preliminary work then,” said Patrick. “I also have a good idea what photos I will use. If I cannot fit a photo in for this year, I put it in the folder for next year which makes it easier to choose photos.”

What keeps Patrick producing calendars year after year is his own love of history, and the following his calendars has received.

“I went to a Champlain school reunion this summer and found that many people already had the complete series,” said Patrick. “It started with only one relative getting my calendar and now, so many more have bought it.”

Calendars are available in Champlain at Kinney Drugs, Champlain Memorial Library, Chauvin Agency, the Samuel de Champlain History Center and at the town and village of Champlain offices. Calendars are also available at Cornerstone Drug and Gift in Rouses Point, Conroy Organics in Beekmantown, and, in Plattsburgh, Cornerstone Bookshop, the Clinton County Historical Association and the Kent-Delord House.

Calendars cost $15 each, with proceeds benefiting the Glenwood Cemetery Association, Champlain.

he Northeastern Clinton Central School boys varsity basketball team, coached by Robb Garrand, comes back from a 12-3 conference record and 17-4 overall record in the 20092010 season.

This year ’s roster includes forwards Steven Carder, Richie Collins and Mike Manor, and guards Jamie Davison, Logan Miller, Tom Bedard, Robb Armstrong, Nate LaFave, Dalton Castine, and Alex Davison, with all but three returning players.

Garrand said the team had a “late start due to an extended soccer season,” and he “expects a lot of leadership from Steven Carder and Jamie Davison.”

Garrand said there needs to be “improved shooting” and he said “finishing when attacking the basket will be critical for the team to continue being successful.”

“Forwards besides Steven Carder will need to make a presence on both sides of the floor,” he explained. “[We] will be competitive however [they] will need to be at the top of their game as several school have great guard play which can be a challenge,” Garrand added.

Dumas also coaches the boys varsity team, which consists of many returning players including senior Cory Manor; juniors Aaron Mesec and Landon Gosselin; sophomores James Lapierre and Kyle Sebert; freshmen Joey Robert and Chris Kokes; and eighth grader Kevin Sterling.

The team also sees many newcombers this year including junior Bruce Bernard; sophomores Dylan Chaffee and Morgan Wyatt;

Indoor farmers market taking off, organizer says

The weekly indoor farmers market at the City Recreation Center on the PARC Oval has been doing well since it first opened Nov. 18, said organizer Beth Spaugh, far exceeding her expectations, she said.

“October farmers markets around here have tended to be pretty quiet, even on Saturdays, so we didn’t know if folks would come to an indoor market on a weekday afternoon,” said Spaugh, who also hosts a booth with her business, Rehoboth Homestead in Peru. “The first week, customers started coming in a soon as we put signs out, and we were swamped with customers as soon as we opened. People were so enthusiastic and encouraging.”

Last week, the market was held on a Wednesday due to Thanksgiving, resulting in a smaller crowd. However, out-of-towners visiting friends and family for the holiday turned out, helping with sales, said Spaugh. This week, Spaugh expected the numbers to pick up once again as buzz of the market increases.

“I thought most people would want to avoid shopping on fall afternoons and evenings and would prefer to pre-order and just quickly pick their orders up, but we have many more walk-in customers so far,” she said.

The best part of the market, said Spaugh, has been how producers support and encourage each other and how enthusiastic

customers have been. The fact the market features cheese producers, maple producers, apple growers and winemakers adds to just what one can walk away with from a day at the market, said Spaugh.

“We actually have a really good range of products,” she said.

The support of the vendors has been a pleasant surprise to Spaugh, who recognizes markets in the winter don’t always fly with growers and producers.

“Though year-round farmers markets are doing very well elsewhere, most farmers

markets close in mid-October here because the customer base drops enough that vendors can’t justify the time at market,” explained Spaugh. “Our producers were taking a risk in joining the market, and I really appreciate that.”

One vendor, Richard Lamoy of Hid-inPines Vineyard in Morrisonville, agreed.

“The market seems to be off to a pretty good start, especially considering the time of year,” said Lamoy. “It is heartening to see so many people of the North Country interested in getting fresh products from small

growers and crafters ... The market has provided me with a bit of foot traffic as well as on-line exposure.”

Spaugh said she would like to see more vendors participate, particularly those offering more grass-fed beef and artisan breads.

“We expect to have grass-fed beef at the Dec. 23 market, but would love to find a producer who will have it available before then,” she said.

The main thing Spaugh said she would like to focus on to enhance the market experience for customers is getting people familiar with on-line ordering in advance — one of the main reasons the market was formed in the first place.

“It would be so convenient for folks in outlying areas or who don’t find it convenient to come to market, to put in their individual orders and have one person pick them all up,” said Spaugh, who added she can envision a community having a satellite pickup up point for customers in their area if customers consult each other when ordering in advance.

“Pre-ordering may increase as customers get familiar and comfortable with the producers and products, but I think lots of folks enjoy the social community of the farmers market,” she said.

The indoor farmers market will continue Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. through Dec. 23.

CCE offering growing workshops Dec. 7 WILLSBORO POINT — Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer a chance Tuesday, Dec. 7, for growers to see first hand how high tunnels can be used to produce fall and winter crops of salad greens and spinach.

The main program will be held at Cornell’s EV Baker Research Farm beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a tour of the fall greens research project underway in their fixed and moveable tunnels. The project compares leafy crops grown inside and outside the tunnels at different timings as well as crops grown without cover with those where cover was added later.

Further discussion and a presentation over lunch will be at the Willsboro Visitor ’s Center. The group will then travel north to Rehoboth Homestead in Peru to see their fixed tunnel crops. Those interested in seeing a 96-foot long rolling tunnel can begin the day at 9 a.m. in Wadhams, just north of Westport. Details and directions for all stops will be given to all who register in advance.

Judson Reid, regional vegetable specialist from western New York will be the guest speaker along with Michael Davis, manager of the Baker Research Farm, and local growers. The cost of the program is $10 per person, which includes lunch and materials.

“That formed the KeesevillePeru Ecumenical Choir at that point in time,” said Woodruff, who has been a member of the choir for the past 19 years.

The following Christmas season, the choir performed its first concert under its new moniker, beginning its path to becoming a long-standing holiday tradition

“Many people say that their Christmas is not complete unless they attend our concert,” said Woodruff. “And, we have many members in our choir say their Christmas is not complete unless they sing in our choir. People just enjoy it.”

The Keeseville-Peru Ecumenical Choir will perform their holiday concert Saturday, Dec. 11, at St. Augustine’s Church in Peru beginning at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 12, at St. John the Baptist Church in Keeseville, also at 7:30 p.m.

Admission to the concerts is free, though donations will be welcome to defray the choir ’s expenses.

in the community. Though the choir continues to perform its “standards” each year like O Come All Ye Faithful, O Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, and the Hallelujah Chorus, Woodruff said the group prides itself on introducing new selections into its repertoire.

“We have a variety of sacred and secular music that we sing,” explained Woodruff. “It’s not just the same music year after year.”

The combination of a fresh arrangement from year to year and the fact many members of the choir have been with the group for several years has led to the longevity of the Keeseville-Peru Ecumenical Choir, said Woodruff.
