Frank Buksa signs with University at Albany jeremiah@denpubs.com BEEKMANTOWN — Frank M. Buksa is going to the University at Albany.

The Beekmantown Central High School senior signed his official letter of intent Nov. 18 to matriculate to the Division I school next fall. Surrounded by family and school staff, Buksa said he was excited to be attending the State University of New York school to play college-level baseball.

Buksa was first drawn to the school when he practiced for the Empire State Games last summer.

“I was like, ‘Wow, I should come and play baseball here. I can already hit home runs out of here,’” said Buksa.

It wasn’t long after University at Albany coaches saw him practice that he was contacted about his interest in attending the fouryear school, said Buksa. However, Buksa and his family did their homework before committing to the school, traveling as far as California to check out other schools that would offer a quality education and a chance for the star catcher to see some playing time. In the end, Albany offered what Buksa wanted.

“I loved it,” Buksa said of touring the campus. “I felt really comfortable with the coaches. They seem like old friends. I like them. I had a good vibe with them.”

Frank A., said of the college. “And, with being a SUNY school with athletic scholarship money makes it financially a very good move also.”

Buksa’s mother, Brenda, agreed, adding she was happy the school was only about three hours away.

“My dad just loves it, too,” she said. “He can’t wait to got watch him play. We all can’t wait to go watch him play. It’s going to be great.”

James Knight Jr., who had coached Buksa for the last three years, said he was proud of him for the hard work he has put into being a standout student athlete.

“It’s been phenomenal working with the family, watching him progress as a ballplayer and as a person,” said Knight. “It’s amazing and a reward that he deserves.”

“Who knows what the next level will be,” Knight added.

As far as Buksa is concerned, he’s not too worried, so long as he’s playing the game he loves.

“Whether that be single A, double A or [Major League Baseball], I want to play. I just love it,” he said.

For now, Buksa said he’s looking forward to his final season as a Beekmantown Eagle.

“Hopefully we get back to the state tournament like we have been the last two years.

A threepeat wouldn’t be too bad for a senior year,” said Buksa, smiling.

Coming to downtown Smoked Pepper owner adds Rouses Point to his menu of businesses

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — Many people are familiar with the well-established Mexican restaurant The Smoked Pepper, located in Plattsburgh. Now, the restaurant’s owner and head chef, Mark Castro, is adding another restaurant to his menu.

In the former Ole Tymes Cafe location, Castro will open the Lake Street Cafe and Grill as well as the Lake Street Bakery, at 9092 Lake St. “Two separate entities with both working together,” Castro explained of the businesses. “The bakery will supply products for that restaurant and also desserts for The Smoked Pepper.”

The bakery will also feature artisan breads utilizing natural products from local mills.

As for the restaurant, the best way Castro could describe the food was “comfort food with a twist.”

roni and cheese on the menu,” he explained.

Castro said the restaurant will also have family-style dinners on Sundays.

“After church or after sports events with the kids, you can come in, sit down ... and we’ll serve you dinner on platters just like you were at home,” he said.

“It opens up another creative venue for us,” Castro added. “And don’t be surprised if you see us sneak a couple of Smoked Pepper items on the menu.”

Castro said he will also offer take out and delivery, including “home meal replacement.”

“Our idea is to be able to offer a dinner for four, take out,” he said. “Soup or salad, entree, vegetable, starch for four people, for $25.”

The idea of having a comfort food restaurant in Rouses Point was something Castro felt there was a demand for.

“We want to give something back to Rouses Point that was there before in Ole Tymes,” he said. “They’ve always served comfort food there. The old railroaders used to eat their breakfast in there every morning. We don’t want to change that.”

“We want to take that, we want to add to it and put our spin on it while also keeping our feet firmly in tradition,” added Castro.

Tradition will also be seen in the restaurant as Castro plans to utilize the old soda fountain, still fully-functional, for malts, floats and milkshakes.

Castro said he also has been a collector of Adirondack Life since its inception and plans to utilize articles and photos from them to decoupage the breakfast bar.

“You’ve got a hundred years of history right in front of you,” he explained. “It should be really nice.”

Castro plans to open the bakery Wednesday, Dec. 1, with the opening for the restaurant to follow sometime in the beginning of January, with both being open seven days a week.

Castro said the support from the village has also helped to get the businesses up and running.

“The village, they’re behind us 150 percent. They’ve been incredibly supportive,” he said. “They want to see every business that comes into Rouses Point expand and grow and they’re willing to do whatever they have to to support that. From the mayor, right on down.”

I’m leaving it to the pros!

emote vehicle starters are very handy devices to have during the winter months. My current vehicle doesn’t have one but the previous one did and I certainly missed it last winter. So, being a do-it-yourselfer, I started to look into finding one to install myself and avoid repeating last year ’s starterless winter.

Modern remote starter systems come with a wide range of features such as integrated security, longrange vehicle starting capability, and twoway remotes that provide the owner with current vehicle status like the doors are locked, the engine is running, and so forth.

My vehicle is a 2009 GMC Sierra. It seems to be an easy installation candidate but after reading through various blogs, review sites, and such I started to have second thoughts about doing it. The Sierra does not have a factory security system, but it does have power locks and remote keyless entry.

The ideal remote starter would integrate well with those features and maybe add additional ones.

I’m technically inclined and have a wide base of experience but, in the widest sense,

installation of a remote starter requires integrating a new component into the existing system. That requires cutting or splicing wires that, if done incorrectly, could result in major problems.

In the end, I think leaving it to a professional is the better choice.

Three things I will look for include the manufacturer, warranty, and experience.

The manufacturer should be one that makes remote starters; not one that slaps their name on another device. I want the main unit to be warranted for as long as I own the Sierra by the place that installs it.

That way, I should not be caught in the middle should problems arise. Lastly, the business must be experienced and have a good reputation.

f you need emergency responders, you dial 9-1-1. But can they find you? In any emergency, you want the responders to reach you quickly. To do that, they need to be able to find you.

Take a good look at your house numbers. Do you even have any up? Are they faded? Are any of the numerals missing? Has a tree or shrub grown to cover them up?

House numbers are critical for emergency responders to find you. They are easy to install, and can be purchased at home improvement stores everywhere. The numbers should be at least 4” high on your house, apartment or garage, and visible from the street. If the numbers cannot be seen from the street, then post another set of numbers at the street end or your driveway or yard.

If your mailbox is out by the road, put your house number on the mailbox (both sides) or the mailbox post. And remember to keep the snow banks cleared away so the numbers show even in the winter.

Create an “Emergency Notebook” to hold important information you might need if you have had to leave in a hurry. Some things to put in this notebook might be:

• Important phone numbers (family, doctors, pharmacy, etc) • A list of medications taken by each family member (it can be hard to think of them for the EMTs or hospital emergency room when you are stressed by a medical emergency) • A list of things to grab if you had to evacuate (medications, pet food, contact solution, incontinence products – all would make even a short stay in a shelter much more tolerable).

Keep this notebook in a place where you could easily grab it to take with you in an emergency. It would be great if you never have to make an emergency call to 9-1-1, but if you do, the preparations listed above could make it less stressful.

addison is a 10-month-old shepherd mix who came in as a stray. She is a sweet girl who loves to please, and gives lots of tail wags and kisses. Maddison is spayed and up-to-date on her vaccines.

Ripley is a 5-year-old wired hair terrier mix. He was hit by a car and when his owner couldn’t be located, he came to the shelter. Ripley is a great dog, loves to be petted and prefers not to be left alone. Ripley is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccines.

How to grow herbs indoors The mission of the Red Cross ne of the things I like most about the summer is fresh herbs. My family cooks with a lot of fresh herbs and these plants thrive in my garden.

But the oncoming winter does not mean fresh herbs cannot be enjoyed. Several varieties thrive inside with the correct knowledge.

Basil does well inside but needs lots of sun and warmth. Start your basil inside from seeds. South facing windows or grow lights produce the best growing conditions for basil during the winter months.

Bay is a tender perennial that grows well in containers all year long. Place the potted bay plant in an east or west facing window.

Make sure the plant does not get too crowded as bay needs good air circulation to remain healthy.

Chervil can grow well indoors but to obtain a harvest, the seeds need to be started in late summer. Chervil does well in low light conditions but the plant needs 65 to 70 degrees F temperatures to thrive. So, if you keep your house cool in the winter chervil may not be the best choice for you.

Tarragon and chives can simply be dug up from your garden at the end of the growing season and put into a pot. Leave the pot outside until the leaves have died back. In the early winter, move the pot into a very cool indoor spot, such as the basement for a few days and then finally you can bring the herb pot into a bright south facing window or under grow lights.

Oregano, rosemary, sage, and thyme are best grown indoors when started from a tip cutting. Cut a piece from your outdoor plant, place it in moist potting mix, and place the pot in a south facing window.

Parsley has a long tap root and does not transplant well. This herb can be started indoors from seeds. Parsley likes full sun, but if you have already filled your south facing windows with other herbs and plants, parsley will grow slowly in an east or west facing window.

he Northeastern New York Region of the American Red Cross comprises 5 Chapters serving a population of nearly 1.9 million people in a 14,900 square mile service area.

The region reaches from the mid-Hudson V Alley to the Canadian Border, with Chapter offices in Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Albany, Glens Falls and Plattsburgh.

In 2009-2010 fiscal year — Red Cross Chapters in the Northeastern New York Region Responded to 325 disasters across the region — primarily house fires.

Chapters also: • Trained Volunteers assist families with emergency shelter, clothing and food and support.

• Trained 76,217 people in CPR, first aid, water safety, use of automated external defibrillators, child care pet first aid and care giving.

• Prepared more than 11,000 individuals for disasters through our community disaster initiatives. Free Red Cross preparedness program teach individuals, families, busi-

nesses, and students the basic steps that should be taken to prepare for emergencies.

• Assisted the NY-Penn Blood Region in the collection of more that 83,000 units of blood for use in hospitals in our region.

• Provided assistance to more than 9400 senior citizens and residents in longterm care facilities through our Telephone Reassurance, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and Lifeline Programs.

• Connected 849 military families during critical life moments such as births and deaths in the region. Red Cross staff and volunteers also educated 236 military families about our emergency communication services with our “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” briefing prior to their loved one’s deployment.

‘Smokeout’ event dances on the issue of tobacco use

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Thirty-five years have passed since the original Great American Smokeout was created by the American Cancer Society, yet kids and teenagers are still bombarded with marketing of tobacco products.

According to New York’s Tobacco Use Prevention and Control, tobacco companies spent $12.5 billion on advertising in 2006 alone.

That’s $8 billion more than junk food and soda companies, and more than $9 billion from alcohol companies.

“Our young people are seeing too much tobacco advertising, particularly in stores ... and that does affect them and it does cause them to start smoking,” explained Karen Derusha of the Adirondack Tobacco Free Network.

To get the general public aware

of this issue, Derusha worked with the American Cancer Society, Colleges 4 Change, and Colleges Against Cancer to host a flash mob at Champlain Centre Mall, called Stepping out Against Tobacco.

The flash mob — which is a spontaneous gathering of people who perform an action and then disperse — was held Nov. 18 and began with dancer Nathaniel Marshall dancing his way across the floor in front of Gander Mountain at the mall.

Eventually more dancers came on the scene, with the end result showcasing 20 dancers. To bring attention to the effects of smoking, the dancers ended the two-minute show with Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” began coughing and eventually fell to the ground. Afterwards some of the dancers stood up and warned the public of the hazards of tobacco use.

“We had just seen another group that had done [a flash mob] and we

thought it would be a cool idea and a great way to promote this particular topic,” Derusha said.

Although she was skeptical of how big the crowd of spectators would be during an afternoon in the middle of the week, Derusha said the crowd was “pretty good.”

“I think we got the effect we were looking for,” she said. “I think people were a little surprised and we caught their attention.”

The act was videotaped by Media Central and will be shown at future events, including Plattsburgh’s annual Relay for Life.

The dancers also performed the flash mob earlier that day at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh for the college students, with positive results.

“I think we’ll definitely be replicating this a few more times,” said Derusha.

How to avoid packing on those unwanted holiday pounds

N

obody goes into the holiday season wanting to gain 5-10 pounds of unwanted weight, however, most people do. The average person gains between 7-10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year ’s.

So, do you have a plan to battle the bulge this holiday season? Well, if you want to avoid unwanted holiday weight gain, I strongly suggest you make a plan! Write it down, and place it somewhere that you will see it constantly throughout the day.

Plan to eat healthy most of the time. When you are at a party or dinner engagement, allow yourself to enjoy the food and/or drink, but in moderation. Don’t stuff yourself until you feel like your going to pop. Then when it’s all over, it’s over. Resume your healthy eating.

Keep the cookies and pies out of the house and off your desk! You don’t have to resist temptation if it is not there, right? If there are cookies and treats at the office or everywhere you look, reach for a piece of fruit or a cup of unsweetened herbal tea to help ease the urge of mindless snacking. If you are truly hungry, eat a healthy meal or snack. Otherwise, stay away! Know that you can have a treat at the office party or at Thanksgiving dinner but that’s it. You won’t be depriving yourself, just limiting your treats to a couple of nights instead of everyday from Thanksgiving until New Year ’s.

Also, even though it is a busy time of year, you should still try to find time to fit in exercise. You don’t have to dedicate and hour or more to the gym. You can get a sufficient total body workout in about 20 minutes. Only have 10 minutes until dinner is ready? Get in 10 minutes — anything is better than nothing. You can even break it up throughout the day. Get in 10 minutes first thing in the morning, 10 minutes at lunch, and 10 minutes in the evening. Not only is it easier to fit into your schedule, you will get a metabolism boost from working out multiple times throughout the day.

So, this holiday season, remember your

goals, and stick to them. You will come out happier, stronger, and have more energy from making healthier lifestyle choices.

Michele’s Fine Dining plans to go pink

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — An evening of food and entertainment will help raise money for a pink fire truck.

The Guardians of the Ribbon, a nonprofit organization made up of firefighters and police officers, work to raise money and awareness for nonprofit entities that help women and children faced with cancer.

The local chapter, also the first in the state, is known as the Northern New York Chapter of the Guardians of the Ribbon, and was begun by West Chazy Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Jim Garrant. The organization began in July and immediately got to work raising money for their pink fire truck — one of the organizations main goals. “[The truck] is going to be used to bring awareness of cancer in women and children and hopefully we can raise more funds,” Garrant explained.

“Other groups that I’ve talked to said that is their biggest thing to do,” he added. “It’s the centerpiece of each chapter. If we go to an event, it helps to draw people in.

We’ve got our eye on three trucks

right now.”

Howard Fleisher, a firefighter with the South Plattsburgh Fire Department and owner of Michele’s Fine Dining, heard about the Guardians and their plans to purchase a truck and knew he wanted to help.

“Having a business in the community, you have to give back to the community,” he explained.

Fleisher will offer a buffet dinner Saturday, Dec. 4, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the restaurant for a $10 donation, with all proceeds going directly towards the truck purchase.

“It’s just amazing because he’s putting on the whole meal for us, no charge,” said Garrant. “He’s gone out and got prizes to raffle off for us.”

The prizes, some of which in-

clude two day passes to Titus Mountain in Malone, and restaurant gift certificates, will be raffled off in a Chinese auction and door prizes.

“We’ve been going around to businesses and they’ve been great helping us out with stuff,” explained Garrant.

Garrant said he’s received enormous help from Fleisher, with Fleisher even ordering special wine for the evening.

“He knows we’re looking to get a fire truck and we’re going to paint it pink. This wine is called Pink Truck wine out in California,” Garrant said, adding Fleisher also ordered a wine called Fire Truck.

Fleisher also told Garrant his plan is to have the Guardians leave the restaurant with the full amount

of money needed for the truck.

If they succeed, the organization can then look towards their next goal of working with CVPH Medical Center ’s cancer center.

“Our goal down the road is to start a fund at the Fitzpatrick Cancer [Center] for people without insurance,” said Garrant, adding it may also be used to pay for copays.

The evening of entertainment at Michele’s Fine Dining, 5131 U.S. Ave., will also feature a deejay and live entertainment from a local band.

Toys for Kids donation ticket in for Four Fathers concert New, unwrapped toys taken to Bowl-Mart to benefit local kids

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — With the layoffs happening at Pfizer Inc. and other businesses in the Northern Tier, Ellen Goyette expects it to be a tough Christmas for many children this year.

To help them out and make sure they receive presents this year, Goyette is collecting gifts for Toys for Kids.

Goyette, who is the co-owner of BowlMart Lanes, will have a special concert with

local band The Four Fathers, Saturday, Dec. 11, from 4 p.m. to midnight.

“It was something that we had talked about with the band, that we wanted to do a fundraiser around the holidays,” Goyette explained. “They played on Halloween and we got to talking about it and I said ‘Why don’t we do a [Toys for Kid] thing, that way the children in the North Country benefit from it?’”

Although The Four Fathers don’t typically play around the holidays, they made an exception for the fundraiser.

“They said, ‘We want to guarantee that we are going to sell 200 tickets and get 200-plus toys, so let’s do it ourselves,” Goyette recalled of her conversation with the band.

“It’s a win-win for everyone. They are a very generous group that often does things to help people out. I didn’t have to twist their

arm at all.”

Tickets to the concert can be received at Bowl-Mart Lanes now through Sunday, Dec. 5, or until all 200 tickets are given out. To receive a ticket, simply bring a new, unwrapped toy to the lanes. It must be worth $5 or more.

“It was something that I saw with the Channel 5 News and how successful they were with it and how they had reached out and touched so many,” said Goyette. “I thought, it’s hard for some of the people in Champlain, Mooers, Rouses Point, to get down to Plattsburgh to drop a gift off.”

Goyette said she will bring all the gifts to the newstation herself.

“If anyone has toys that they would like to contribute and are not necessarily interested in a ticket for the evenings entertainment, I will gladly accept them and make

sure they get down to NewsChannel 5,” added Goyette.

One of the main reasons Goyette chose Toys for Kids to give assistance to, is because the gifts will stay in the area.

“We were told that if we bring them from New York State or Upstate New York, they will stay in Upstate New York,” she explained. “That’s what my main concern was, because I wanted to make sure they stay in the Northern Tier.”

If interested in a ticket to the concert, toys can be brought to Bowl-Mart Lanes, 277 U.S. Route 11, through Dec. 5. They are open every day beginning at noon.

TAC and ‘Power of SUNY’ go hand in hand

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The words upon the State University of New York seal are ones that the SUNY Plattsburgh Technical Assistance Center live by every day.

“If you look closely, they read ‘To Learn.

To Search. To Serve,’” said TAC executive director Howard Lowe. “That ties in directly with what we do. We do a lot of research and search for information that we make available to improve the community.”

According to TAC’s mission statement, the center is the economic development outreach arm of SUNY Plattsburgh which provides technical assistance to public and private sector organizations with the goal of enhancing economic development across Northern New York. Lowe prides the center not only on its day-to-day efforts to improve the community through its efforts, but in also aligning itself with SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher ’s “Power of SUNY” philosophy. Power of SUNY is the belief SUNY schools can serve as “the driving force behind New York State’s economic revitalization and a better future for its citizens.”

“When we read the Power of SUNY, we thought, ‘Oh, we already do much of this,’” said Lowe.

The Power of SUNY is based on six principles: SUNY and the Entrepreneurial Century, SUNY and the Seamless Education Pipeline, SUNY and a Healthier New York, SUNY and an Energy Smart New York, SUNY and the Vibrant Community, and SUNY and the World.

Though TAC’s strategic initiatives have already embodied the spirit of the Power of SUNY, there are key areas which stand out for the center, said assistant director Victoria Zinser Duley. One of which is creating healthier communities.

The center has worked with the Clinton, Essex and Franklin county health departments in varying capacities over the years, Duley explained, helping the departments establish healthy community initiatives.

“The projects we’ve undertaken with the Clinton County Health Department have been really exciting, ranging from research and data analysis for public health planning documents to assisting with long-term planning to create healthier communities through policy change,” she said.

Department to promote activities and projects hosted by the department on a regular basis.

“We will be working with the department on their “Healthy Schools New York” project, which is working to change school policies to promote healthier lifestyles for the kids,” said Duley, adding that the center has been honored to work with the CCHD. “They’re real leaders in the Northeast as far as planning long-term for a more physically-active community, with improved nutrition, and access to preventive primary health care.”

Developing partnerships between the public and private sector to move the region forward has always been a goal of TAC, said Lowe, which demonstrates another way the center aligns with the Power of SUNY. Proof of that is in the grant that TAC is implementing to help improve wireless broadband network access throughout the region, particu-

larly the Adirondack Park.

“We all want our computers in our pockets, and to be always connected, wherever we are, whenever we want,” said Lowe.

“And, yet, in the Adirondack region, that’s very difficult.”

Though restrictions are put in place to protect the natural beauty of the Adirondack Park, the restrictions also hinder technology becoming amply available in places like the High Peaks region.

The center, through the Research Foundation of SUNY, applied for and recently received a DEC Smart Growth grant to fund research to locate existing structures within the Adirondack Park that could be used to mount wireless antennas.

“The whole idea is that if we can create a database for the private companies to use, it will save them a lot of money and it will encourage them to expand their wireless service areas,” said Lowe. “Over next six

months, we’re going to be identifying communities in the Adirondack Park that will work with us to help us find those structures that are already there, have electricity, have access.”

The center is working with a private geographic information systems company for the project but also will enlist the services of at least one student from SUNY Plattsburgh’s Department of Earth and Environmental Science.

“It will get them involved in some field work that will be terrific for their school work and their resume,” said Lowe.

Through TAC, local tourism bureaus and municipalities like the city of Plattsburgh have also benefitted from countless hours of research, said Duley, further playing into the Power of SUNY’s focus on creating vibrant communities.

The center has provided research and grant-writing for ongoing initiatives such as the Saranac River Multi-use Trail and collected and analyzed information useful for the North Country’s tourism industry. TAC is now working with the City of Plattsburgh to help it attract businesses to locate there.

“One of the things we’ve done is look at comparable cities around New York State and around the country and see how they promote themselves to businesses. Some do an excellent job and have won awards for their promotion, but there are some that do a poor job,” stated Lowe. “And, we don’t want Plattsburgh to be one of them. We want Plattsburgh to be seen as really getting it, in terms of knowing what we have to offer businesses and making some noise about it so it’s easy for prospective businesses to see what a good fit it would be for them to come here.”

Given the state of the national and even local economy, said Duley, TAC’s ability to provide information for local governments and other agencies can save them time and money.

MORRISONVILLE — The Algonquin Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club will hold its annual Pot Luck, Meeting and Program Friday, Dec. 3, at the Clinton County Fairgrounds off State Route 22B. The public event will take place in the Conservation Building at 5:30 p.m., with those attending encouraged to bring their own place setting, cup and a dish to share.

Chazy boys win second state championship

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com MIDDLETOWN — The Chazy varsity boys soccer team have now won the Class D state championships two years in a row.

In a virtually scoreless game against Hamilton Central School in Middletown Nov. 21, the boys were finally able to claim the title in the second overtime.

“It was probably the most amazing game I’ve ever been a part of,” said coach Rob McAuliffe. “There wasn’t much separating us and Hamilton.”

McAuliffe said the team knew the entire season they had a strong chance of winning the game.

“The beginning of the year we set very clear goals for us and I think anything less than winning yesterday would have been a disappointment,” he said.

On the way home from Middletown, McAuliffe said the atmosphere on the bus was very exciting.

“It’s always a great feeling to them to set a goal like that and to achieve it,” he said. “It was an added plus that you’re celebrating

this knowing that the girls also won the state championship. It was more than just our team celebrating, it was the whole community.”

The community did celebrate as hundreds turned out to the soccer field Sunday night to greet the soccer teams.

“It was a great feeling,” McAuliffe said of seeing the gathering. “We have a wonderful community.”

“It’s not surprising that so many of them came out to celebrate the two victories with us,” he added. “We have a very loyal fan base and just a wonderful supportive community and school. It was nice to be able to celebrate that with most of the people who traveled all the way down to Middletown and also the people who listened on the radio.”

The school also hosted an assembly Nov. 22 to congratulate the teams, in which McAuliffe planned to thank the community for all they’ve done.

“That idea that it takes a village to raise a child and this year was no different,” he said.

“With all the support that we have from this community and the school, everyone can say they had a part of this.”

Chazy girls varsity soccer takes home Class D title State win first time in same year as boys team

DRYDEN — The Chazy Central Rural School girls varsity soccer team finally has a state championship title to call their own.

In 2007, the girls received the title of cochampions after the game ended in a tie.

However, after outscoring Smithtown Christian 3-1 Nov. 20, the team no longer has to share that title.

“It’s such a huge privilege to make it,” said coach Karin Sherman Trombley. “I told them all weekend that we want it, but if we walk away not making it and not winning it, just to be there is just a huge accomplishment.”

Not only do the girls now have the title, but it’s also the first year they share the title with the boys varsity soccer team.

Two of the goals were scored by senior Astrid Kempainen, one off a direct kick, and the other in a low shot to the corner.

“It was beautiful,” said Sherman Trombley of the second goal.

The final goal was scored with less than

five minutes left in the second half by senior Chelsea Guay, who headed the ball in the net off a corner kick.

Despite those two girls scoring the winning goals, Sherman Trombley said everyone had a hand in the win.

“No matter what, everybody has a role on the team,” she said. “No matter if you go in for 80 minutes, or a minute, or you don’t play a game, the reason we are so successful is because we work hard. We are our best competition at practice. Every single one of them is such a huge part of the program.”

Sherman Trombley also thanked the community for their support of the team.

Following the boys soccer team win in Middletown, where many of the girls traveled to to support them, both teams returned to the school Sunday evening, Nov. 21, to hundreds of community members cheering.

“It’s a small community, but the support and the people are just amazing,” coach said. “It’s great and it’s touching and it’s emotional to see people come out at 8:30 at night to see the teams.”

Coast Guard honors local volunteers during Change of Watch GLENS FALLS — The United States Coast Guard honored four Clinton County residents Nov. 14 at the Change of Watch meeting, Division 15, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Division 15 Commander Margaret Malone of Beekmantown was awarded the Coast Guard Auxiliary Achievement Medal. Malone has been a member of the Auxiliary since 2001 and she and Tom Malone were leaders in establishing Flotilla 15-08 in Plattsburgh.

JCEO grant From page 1 its second running for one of 10 $25,000 grants from the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. Garcia, who serves as executive director for the JCEO, said he’s hoping the second time will be the charm.

“We were in the running last month,” said Garcia, “and we ended up at 87th. What happens is if you make the top 100, they automatically qualify you for another month’s worth of voting.”

The Refresh Everything Project opens submitted causes up to the public to vote on which projects they’d like to see funded most. The proposed project to fund for JCEO, said Garcia, is to make improvements to its food pantry, including purchasing new freezers, refrigerators, and shelving.

However, the improvements aren’t just because JCEO wants to make an upgrade — it’s because one is needed, said Garcia. In the last year and a half, JCEO has arranged cooperative agreements with Wal-Mart, Target, Sam’s Club, and Yando’s that give JCEO donations of “an extraordinary amount of food.”

Commandant’s Letter of Commendation award for his work as public affairs officer. Hugh Conners of Peru also was given the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation award for his work in developing an Auxiliary operations and training center at the Old Base marina in Plattsburgh.

Flotilla 15-08 Commander Franklin Williams of Schuyler Falls received a letter of commendation for attaining the highest flotilla membership participation in Division 15 for 2010.

“We’ve gotten over 120,000 pounds of food from those entities,” he said. “The problem is, it’s really stretched our resources. Some of our coolers are older and now they’re full all the time and really working hard. It’s been great from the standpoint that we’ve been able to give low-income families really balanced nutrition, more than we’ve even been able to do before, but we need better equipment to store the food properly.”

And, though JCEO is competing against 247 other entries in their category, Garcia said he feels the people of the North Country will step up to support JCEO in its endeavor.

“We’ve made a lot of progress in the course of a month,” said Garcia. “If we can keep the momentum up, maybe we can get into the top 10.”

he winters sports season is almost here, with varsity-level teams getting excited about upcoming games, meets and matches.

Peru Varsity Boys Basketball Team The varsity boys basketball team will be coached by John Clemons. The team’s overall record was 16-4 last year with a 12-1 conference record.

This year ’s team will consist of forwards Dan Caron, Taylor Rock and Tim Remillard; centers Charles Remillard; and guards Joe Mazzella, Kyle Carter, Will Flynn, Taylor Spear, Josh Morales, Mike Holdridge, Ben Chen and Hunter Bruno.

“This year, the Indian look to conintue the success of their program with six returning players, three of which are three-year varsity players,” said Clemons. “Their strength will be in the leadership of their continue play, but they continue to focus on fundamentals, hard work and teamwork. These expectations will help the Indian overcome the loss of coach Matt Berry and players Robert Duquette and Kaleb Gohlke.”

Peru Varsity Girls Basketball Team The varsity girls basketball team will be coached by Ryon O’Connell. The team’s overall record was 14-6 last year with a 133 conference record.

This year ’s team will consist of forwards Emily Decker, Jessica Decker, Meg Barber, Emily Major and Danni Dayton; guards Katie Bruno, Kelly Kezar, Mary Mazzella, Raelyn Passino, Stephanie Demarais, Mary Gilbert and Sam Martin.

“We are a well-balanced team with good height and team quickness,” said O’Connell. “We look to push the ball on offense and create turnovers on defense. I am looking for the entire team to contribute during

each game. With so many returners we should be sound on both ends of the floor. I hope to be in title contention towards the end of January and into February.”

“Saranac Chiefs will undergo changes this year with new coaching staff and many young and up and coming freshmen,” said Davis.

The team’s key strengths will be goal tending and team captains and leaders, as well as a great work ethic, he said. The year, however, will be a regrouping year with seven key platers lost from last year and nine from the year before.
