COOPERSVILLE — There was quite a sight to be seen on Laurin Drive Nov. 16, when the Coopersville School District No. 9 one-room schoolhouse was moved on a trailer truck to its new location on Bechard Road.

The schoolhouse was in the back yard of Celine R. Paquette where it has stood for nearly 70 years, after it was purchased by her fatherin-law William Paquette in the 1940s and used as a camp.

Seven years ago, Paquette contacted Suzanne Moore, also of Coopersville, about potentially having the building moved.

“I just didn’t have the time at the time,” recalled Moore. “So last fall she said she really needs to do something. If we didn’t take it she was going to have to have it torn down or maybe burned as a fire exercise.”

Moore, along with Geri Favreau, Kathy Fosher and Gloria Ashline, began to meet as a committee this past January to have the schoolhouse moved.

Moore explained Paquette contacted her because Moore had grown to admire the building while researching Coopersville for her book “From the Living Stone — A History of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Coopersville, N.Y.” From there Moore said she contacted Ed-

“Right now there are no schoolhouses in Champlain that are saved as schoolhouses,” Moore added. “This is pretty rare.”

Now that the land on Laurin Drive has been cleared, another step Moore hopes to take is to bring in a metal detector.

“Before they closed the school, they buried a time capsule which was stuck in a canning jar,” she said. “We’re hoping to use a metal detector to try to find it. Nobody knows where it is.”

ward Bechard, who had attended the school in first and second grade and whose father Alderic Bechard was the one to have the school closed.

“We just went to Eddie and asked him if he’d be interested in helping us to make it into a little museum,” Moore explained. “When I wrote the church history book, it was clear that the schoolhouse meant a lot to him. He offered the land, he offered to pay for the move and we’re really really grateful to Celine for donating it and to Ed for assuming the property.”

The land which Bechard offered actually puts the schoolhouse less than a mile from its original location on Mason Road, before it was purchased by William Paquette.

The move received help from private contractor Denis Richard who helped plan the move, and Ed Garrow & Sons Inc of Plattsburgh who acquired the permits for the transportation of the 20-by41 foot schoolhouse.

Moore said she hopes to have an open house for the schoolhouse at its Bechard Road location sometime in the spring, at which time it will be the Coopersville Schoolhouse of History. She also hopes to see it receive nonprofit status.

“We’ll have exhibits three times a year,” she said. “Schools can bring kids to tour the place.

There’ll be some interpretive panels and things. We’re hoping to collect all things schoolhouse in the area.”

New book shows history of Clinton County through photographs sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The history of Clinton County can now be seen in 183 photographs.

Clinton County historian Anastasia Pratt spent seven months working with Arcadia Publishing on her first book, “Clinton County (Images of America).”The book joins hundreds of others in the Images of America series which as been produced by Arcadia Publishing since 1993.

“It’s photos from all over the county put into eight different categories to show life during the earliest times to the present,” Pratt explained of the book.

“As a historian, I have access to all these wonderful photos and I’d like more people to be aware of them,” she added.

Pratt said Arcadia Publishing was interested in doing something on the whole county, with specific books about Cham-

plain and Chazy already having been published.

According to Pratt, the book features photos ranging from farms in Ellenburg, to logging trucks, to the Plattsburgh Air Force Base, and numerous local churches.

“Every photo has a caption and the captions had some research explaining the history in each photo,” she said, adding most of the photos speak for themselves.

“There should be at least one image in every [town],” Pratt added. “I tried very hard to make sure there were.”

However, with the quick turnaround time of the book, Pratt admits she’s already found some mistakes, which will be fixed in future editions.

“We had two photos in particular that were in the collection and labeled incorrectly and so people have been kind enough to tell me that and tell me stories to go along with the photos,” she explained.

more stories at her upcoming book signing to take place at Corner-Stone Bookstore on Margaret Street Saturday, Nov. 27, from 1 to 3 p.m.

“I do hope that people will come and look at some pictures and tell me some of the fun stories,” she said. “Or things that they remember about particular places. I think that’s what I hope more than anything. It’ll be a time to share some stories of the past.”

Although she doesn’t know if she’ll be the author, Pratt said she hopes more books will be published in the Images of America series focusing on Plattsburgh and some of the surrounding towns.

Happy anniversary, Windows Old age, I decided, is a gift

S

aturday, Nov. 20, is the 25th anniversary of the Windows operating system.

The first release was aptly named Windows 1 while the latest is Windows 7, but in between, Windows naming schemes were very inconsistent.

The first two releases of Windows were only available to buyers of IBM, Compaq and a few other computer brands. The general public would not be able to pick up a copy of Windows until the release of Windows 3. Those first three versions were odd in that they were not actually operating systems they were operating environments meaning the Windows interface rode on top of the true underlying operating system called Disk Operating System (DOS).

During the Windows 3 period, Microsoft split the line-up between consumers and businesses with the release of the NT line. Windows NT was unique in that it did not run on top of DOS; it was a true preemptive multi-tasking operating system that operated in protected mode resulting in more stable operation.

The last numbered version was NT4.

For the next few years, Microsoft aban-

doned straight version numbers in favor of release year numbers giving us the 9X consumer series that included Windows 95, 98 and the simply awful Windows Millennium.

The business series went from NT4 to Windows 2000.

After Y2K, Microsoft changed course again by merging the separate consumer and business lines

By Ron Poland and they stopped using a naming scheme with numbers in favor of straight names. The next Windows release would be XP, which enjoyed the longest run of all previous Windows versions, followed by Vista.

Today with Windows 7, we’re right back where we started from with straight version numbers. Initial reporting on the next version say Microsoft will call it Windows 8? I’ll believe it when I see it.

(Editor’s Note: The following is reprinted from the Wyoming County Office for the Aging newsletter.) am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the love handles. Often, I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don’t agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, and my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend. I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn’t need but looks so avante garde on my patio.

I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m. and sleep until 10? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s.

I will walk the beach in a swimsuit and I will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old. Hee Hee I know I am sometimes forgetful.

But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken.

How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s beloved pet gets hit by a car or dies of old age? Broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart nev-

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day, if I feel like it.

Getting sturdier paperwhites

P

aperwhites (Narcissus tazetta) are popular indoor plants for winter.

Unlike other narcissus which are also known as daffodils, paperwhites don’t require a chilling period, so forcing them is as easy as putting the bulbs in water and waiting. The fragrant flowers bloom within about two to three weeks of planting, for almost instant gratification.

A problem with paperwhites, as with many bulbs planted in pots, is they grow quite tall and all of their weight is at the top. Researchers in the Flowerbulb Research Program at Cornell University have come up with an unusual solution to this top heavy problem: alcohol.

When paperwhite bulbs are grown in a dilute solution of alcohol, the plants reach a height of 1/3 to 1/2 their normally expected growth — but the flowers remain normal size and last just as long.

To stunt your paperwhites with alcohol, simply pot your paperwhites as you normally would in stones and water. Once the roots begin growing and the green shoot on top reaches about 1-2 inches in height, pour off the existing water. Then replace the water with a solution of 5 percent alcohol. Continue to use the alcohol solution for all future waterings.

When making an alcohol solution, use any

hard liquor such as vodka. Rubbing alcohol can also be used.

Beer and wine have too much sugar and should be avoided.

After selecting your alcohol, determine the percent of alcohol.

Most liquors are labeled as proof. To get the percentage simply divide the proof in half. A 86 proof bourbon, for example, would be 43 percent alcohol.

To get the alcohol content down to 5 percent, just divide the percentage of alcohol by 5 and then subtract 1. That will tell you how many parts water to mix with your 1 part alcohol. For example, a 40 percent alcohol divided by 5 is 8. Subtract one and your get 7. So, for every seven tablespoons of water your need to have one tablespoon of alcohol to get a solution of 5 percent.

Whatever you do, if you try this growing method, make sure your solution is no more than 10 percent alcohol. If it is greater than 10 percent, your plants will overdose and severe growth problems will occur. Also, make sure pets and young children cannot get into the solution! Then enjoy your shorter and sturdier paperwhites!

Market Basket prices stable

P

rices stabilized for groceries in the Plattsburgh area this month, which is a relief after three months of increases. The 41 items came in at $94.11 in October, up a few cents from September’s cost of $93.96, and up 1 percent from last October’s cost of $93.11.

For the month of October, prices stayed relatively the same in most categories, with the exception of a 5 percent decrease on produce and a 7 percent increase on miscellaneous items. For the year there was a 10 percent increase on meats and a 7 percent decrease on frozen foods.

Costs for 10 pounds of round white potatoes and yellow onions dropped this month, although onions are still 14 percent higher than October 2009. Carrots and red Delicious apples are both also up for the year.

Chopped spinach was on sale in many stores this month, preventing the total of items from the frozen food case from increasing despite higher prices on both store brand ice cream and haddock.

Drinks prices continue to be stable overall, but 100 store brand tea bags are 31 cents less this year than last.

After trending upwards for several months, canned goods had a slight decrease this month.

The cost of all products priced in this category are down from October 2009: Del Monte fruit cocktail, Green Giant peas, store brand diced tomatoes, Starkist chunk tuna fish and store brand vegetable soup in beef stock.

A drop back to the more normal $1.22 per dozen large eggs helped keep dairy prices from spiking due to the increase of the cost of a pound of store brand butter again this month. The price on this item is 55 cents higher than this time last year.

Prices on meats were up overall and continue

to fluctuate on particular cuts. For the year there has been a 28 percent increase on chuck steak and 23 percent on one pound of Oscar Mayer bacon, with increases on all cuts except ground chuck.

In the breads, cereals and grains category, sugar finally decreased slightly in cost for the month.

It is still 9 percent more expensive than this month last year. Hopefully, the cost of this important holiday baking ingredient will continue downward.

Seasonal reminders Apple picking began about a week earlier than usual due to the heat this year. One of the true advantages of living in the North Country is the accessibility of local orchards. Many have opportunities for family fun picking apples and pumpkins. This is pear season, and the start of the cranberry season. Sweet potatoes and winter squash are in peak supply and good sources of beta carotene (Vitamin A).

The Market Basket Report is a bi-monthly survey of 41 food items commonly purchased by consumers.

Four major supermarkets are surveyed in the Plattsburgh area and the resulting report produced. The report is a community service sponsored by the Technical Assistance Center at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Upon approaching the deer, Lavergne said he was amazed at the sheer mass and tines — 21 in all. Then, he noticed the identifiable split in the deer ’s ear, and knew he had shot the big non-typical so many had pursued in the past.

Sightings around town put the deer at more than 10 years old — an extreme age for a whitetail in the Adirondacks.

The buck weighed just 178 pounds, making the rack, which stands a full 20-inches off the deer ’s skull, look out of character with the body.

Lavergne, 44, is having the buck mounted and will have it scored once the drying period passes.

Richard Johndrow, measurer chairman of the New York State Big Buck Club, studied photographs of the deer and estimated its net score in the 160 range.

Johndrow said the largest non-typical ever taken in New Yorks was the Homer Boylan rack taken in 1939 and it scored just over 244. The second largest was taken in St. Lawrence County by Ken Locy which net scored just over 225.

There are 38 non-typical racks, he said, netting over 190 in the state. The 38th largest was taken by Frank Dagles in Bolton Landing in 1961 — a 15-pointer netting just over 190.

ob Lavergne’s crew had seen the buck the day before and knew it carried some significant bone, but none had considered it was the buck of local legend known as “split ear.”

Deer often wander into town to yard during the long winter months in Indian Lake, and folks here had seen the deer return year after year.

In fact, a local taxidermist had recovered a matching set of sheds from the buck and mounted them on another cape — the impressive non-typical rack scored close to 190.

But Lavergne was hunting in a stretch of property by the Cedar River, miles from town.

No one in the crew expected the big non-typical to make an appearance.

That, however, was about to change.

It was the morning of Saturday, Nov. 6, and Lavergne decided to split from the crew who were making drives and still hunt his way along the side of a ridge where the crew had seen the deer the day before.

Minutes later he caught movement along the ridge and pulled his 30-06 to his shoulder.

“I wasn’t really concentrating on the rack, I knew it had good antler, but I was more worried about making an accurate shot,” Lavergne said.

Strength training for women

W

eight training is an important part of any exercise program however, this week I will be focusing on the benefits that weight training holds for women.

Many of the common issues women face can be addressed thought lifting weights: Body fat, stress, weakness, insomnia, osteoporosis, poor balance, etc.

You really don’t need a lot of fancy equipment or expensive gym memberships to train with weights. All you really need are a couple pair of hand weights to get you started. It will most likely take you a couple times to figure out what size weights you should be using for each exercise, but you want to make sure the weight is heavy enough and not too easy. The object is to lift weights heavy enough to build muscle, which in turn will speed up your metabolism and burn more fat. Weight training is a weight bearing activity which with consistency over time (at least six months) you will begin to increase your bone density which helps to prevent osteoporosis. Many women report after weight training they get a better night sleep. It can also be a great stress reliever taking your mind off other things while you are focusing on breathing, proper form, and technique. I have seen the confidence level in many of my women clients improve immensely even after a couple weeks of weight training three times a week.

When it comes to weight loss, or rather, fat loss, there is a lot more to it than just weight training or cardio exercise alone. Women On Weights is now offering unique classes to teach you everything you need to know to get results. Classes are small, to offer more individualized attention. It is actually more like a small group personal training session. You will be given the tools you need to see the results you want.

Over the course of the 10-week session, you will progressively work up to heavier weights and more advanced exercises appropriate for you and your group. You will be given a detailed print out of the exercises done in class to help you along when you are on your own. You will also be given a cardio plan and nutritional guidelines to follow. An individualized sample meal plan will be developed specifically for you to get you started.

That is why I find it so important to teach my clients about nutrition. Getting his wish Boy with retinoschisis gets mall shopping spree through Make-A-Wish

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Ten-year-old Devin Fournier could go blind at any moment.

Immediately after Devin was born, he was officially diagnosed with retinoschisis, an eye disease.

According to the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center, retinoschisis is a disease of the eye’s nerve tissue, and is actually a form of macular degeneration.

“My sister had an older boy and he was diagnosed with it when he was younger,” explained Devin’s mother, Susan Fournier. “It was told to us by the doctor that us girls would be the carriers and the boys would get the disease.”

Susan explained when she found out she was pregnant with Devin she had genetic testing done and when he was born the umbilical cord blood was tested, confirming Devin had the disease.

“He can lose his eyesight at any time,” said Susan.

“If Devin gets a major blow to his head, he could go [blind] then,” she added. “Every time he gets hit in the head, I’m like ‘Oh gosh, Devin, can you see me?’”

Every six months, since Devin was just three months old, he has been going to Vermont to have his eyes closely examined to make sure the disease has not progressed.

These evaluations require Devin be put under anesthesia.

“They put him under anesthesia because it’s so intense,” Susan explained. “Devin just can’t do the light because he’s so light-sensitive in his eyes. So, they just do it that way so they don’t hurt him and he doesn’t hurt anybody.”

When the testing in Vermont brings any concerns, Devin then has to have additional testing done at the Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, which happened this past August.

With the family being on a fixed income, Susan contacted the Make-A-Wish Foundation to find out if there was any assistance they could receive. Although the woman on the other end of the phone said they don’t provide that type of assistance, she did ask Susan if she would be interested in applying for a wish, which is granted to children with potentially life-threatening medical conditions.

Devin’s wish of a shopping spree was granted at Champlain Centre mall Nov. 11.

Following a trip to Maui North to receive a new bike, Devin took a limousine ride to the mall where he was greeted by numerous employees. Many of the employees took up collections and purchased gifts for Devin, including a scooter from Best Buy, a teddy bear from Hall-

“This was a great example of the community coming together,” said Make-A-Wish field office coordinator Patricia Reyell-MacMannis. “Everything truly made him feel like a VIP.” “They were absolutely thrilled,” Champlain Centre marketing director Joan LaPier said of the mall’s employees. “I went around to the stores with information concerning Devin and they were all so excited.”

“It was a very heartfelt experience for everyone,” she added.

Devin came home from his four-hour shopping spree with an Xbox 360, mini laptop, and flat screen television.

He also bought an iPod Touch for his sister, Shawntel Brown.

Although Susan admits Devin was slightly overwhelmed by the whole experience, he was also ecstatic.

“He loves everything he got and everything everybody did for him,” she said. “It was such a nice thing.”

“They’re great,” Susan added of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “If anybody needs a wish, I would say, call Make-A-Wish.”

More about retinoschisis According to the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center, juvenile X-linked retinoschisis affects primarily boys and young men.

Retinoschisis affects one in 5,000 to 25,000 individuals, often young males. Two aspects of vision are typically affected, including central vision and peripheral vision.

Visual acuity can range from 20/30 to less than 20/200, caused by the formation of tiny cysts in the retina. Visual acuity cannot be improved with glasses, as the cysts often cause nerve damage.

Currently, there are no medical or surgical treatments available for retinoschisis.

Night of Giving returns for fifth year

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The festive season has already begun at Champlain Centre. And, this weekend the mall will truly celebrate the giving spirit of the holidays.

The mall will take part in the fifth annual “Night of Giving,” this Sunday, Nov. 21, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Customers who visit the mall with a special Night of Giving ticket will be entitled to exclusive in-store promotions by participating merchants. The tickets are purchased from one of the nearly 20 participating nonprofit organizations who receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the tickets they sell.

“I think more than ever this year we’re going to have more nonprofits,” said the mall’s marketing director Joan LaPier. “We’re excited about that. I think they see it as a good deal.”

LaPier explained during the event people first go to the customer service desk with their ticket at which time they’ll receive the list of special promotions throughout the mall.

LaPier estimates 50 percent of the mall’s stores are taking part in this special event.

Night of GIving also features festive entertainment held in the middle of the mall.

“We are going to have Sweet Adelines,

we’re going to have the [State University of New York at Plattsburgh] Gospel Choir, and we’re having Barbershoppers and dancers and so on,” LaPier said. “We’re also having the [Plattsburgh High School] orchestra. So, we’re excited about that.”

Festival of Trees returns The fourth annual Advocacy and Resource Center ’s Festival of Trees will also take place this Sunday, Nov. 21. Individuals, businesses and civic groups will begin decorating trees at 9 a.m. and the event will open at 2 p.m. People can purchase tickets for the chance to win the tree of their choice.

Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit First Step, an ARC program which provides autism assessments for families in the North Country.

Free Thanksgiving meal returns for less fortunate

Check. Cranberry sauce? Check. Enough food for more than 300 people? You’d better believe it.

Though Thanksgiving is the time of year many are preparing for small family gatherings around the dinner table, it’s also the time of year the Plattsburgh chapter of The Salvation Army is busily preparing for its own community meal.

“We served about 350 people last year,” said kitchen coordinator Marjorie Minckler. “And, we didn’t run out of anything.”

The local Salvation Army chapter has been hosting the dinner for several years, each time putting on a spread aimed at providing a free holiday meal to the less fortunate.

“I feel very good about it,” Minckler said of

hosting the meal. “I love to cook and I love to serve. That’s why I do what I do at the Salvation Army.”

Last Thanksgiving was Minckler’s first time overseeing the community meal, assisted by her daughter, Lilian LaPier, who also works at the local Salvation Army. Both were overwhelmed by the turnout.

“It’s amazing how many people came out,” said LaPier. “You don’t realize how many people come to it until they’re all there.”

“I’m happy everybody gets to go to it,” said Minckler. “And, I’m glad I’m a part of it.”

Preparation for the meal typically begins three to four weeks in advance, said Minckler, with she and LaPier knee-deep in last-minute food prep.

“We’re working on squash and stuffing and doing all the upcoming preparations for the meal,” Minckler said last week as she stood in the kitchen at the South Catherine Street Salva-

tion Army center.

“We’ve been working on squash all day, and we’ve only got three pans done,” said LaPier, laughing.

Donations from the community have begun to pour in for the meal, which relies heavily on the generosity of people in the North Country. The preplanned menu will consist of turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, squash, cranberry sauce, apple crisp, apple pie, pumpkin pie, cheese and crackers, pepperoni and dinner rolls.

Currently, Minckler said she is in need of more hams, canned vegetables and pies, if people are willing to donate them. Monetary donations are also accepted to help offset the cost of the meal.

“Every little bit helps,” she said.

The meal will be hosted at Elks Lodge 621, 56 Cumberland Ave., next Thursday, Nov. 25, beginning at 12 p.m. Seating will begin at 11:30 a.m.

PLATTSBURGH — It was a nice day for a swim — except for the fact the water temperature was in the 40s.

Despite the near freezing conditions of Lake Champlain, hundreds gathered at Plattsburgh City Beach for the first annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge Nov. 13.

The reason? Supporting Special Olympics New York, an organization that hosts an annual state competition for those with intellectual disabilities.

Michelle Menard, one of the organizers for the event, couldn’t believe the turnout for both the plunge and the preview party and silent auction hosted the night before.

Combined, the two events raised more than $22,000.

“I was shocked, totally shocked,” said Menard. “The first couple weeks, there was only about $1,000 posted on-line, and then, in the past couple days, it just exploded. It’s been so great for the community and everybody that helped out. Everybody’s been talking about it.”

“We had heard about it and thought it was a great cause,” said Megan Gruschow, a student at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh who participated with the Student Nursing Association team. “I’m going to school for special education, so it was a

“I don’t think I was thinking anything, to be honest. I just went in,” said Gruschow’s friend and teammate, Emily Vallone. “We actually went back in three times. This is our last year at Plattsburgh State, so we want to experience as much as we can and this is a great cause. We figured, why not?

The enthusiasm of participants like Gruschow and Vallone impressed Kaila Horton, associate director of development for Special Olympics of New York. And, the fact the event raised more than $20,000 in its first year was even more amazing, she said.

“We were expecting 150, maybe 200 people. I know that we definitely had 200 people that participated today, not even counting the spectators,” said Horton. “There are probably 300 to 400 people here.”

“This event just blew away my expectations,” she added.

The event even drew local dignitaries like Mayor Donald M. Kasprzak, Clinton County Sheriff David N. Favro, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew J. Wylie and Essex County Kristy Sprague, among others.

The support shown by them and the hundreds of others is encouraging for the event to be even bigger and better next year, said Menard.

“We’ve already got more people who are ready to sign up, so we’re pretty excited about that,” she said.

Kirk A. Stallsmith, chairman of the local United Way’s 2010-11 fundraising campaign, is co-chairing the event with Ground Round manager Bob Kidwell, also a member of the fundraising campaign team. The idea behind the event was to broaden the participation in giving to the United Way and increasing community involvement.

“The thought was to develop an event that can reach across all three counties and involve a segment of the market that could get excited about participating in the annual United Way campaign efforts,” said Stallsmith.

Dine Out for United Way — which will be held across the tri-county region Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 — encourages people to go out to eat at participating businesses during designated times that day, with as much as 10 percent of the total gross sales at each restaurant to go to the United Way. “Participating restaurants will sign up to donate a percentage of their proceeds from the evening and where it is possible we would like to offer an opportunity for waitstaff to do likewise,” explained Stallsmith.

“It is a time of year after Christmas and New Year ’s where business may be a bit slower.

Conference stresses relationship abuse isn’t just an urban problem

By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Paul Henry Danylewich’s motivation as a public speaker is simple: to make young women aware abusive relationships are possible and they don’t have to live with them.

Danylewich’s message was heard by approximately 200 area high school girls at the first annual Plattsburgh Girl Conference Nov. 3, held at the Senior Citizens Council of Clinton County Senior Center. Students from Beekmantown, Chateaugay, Crown Point, Lake Placid, North Wood, Keene Valley and Willsboro high schools were bussed in for the day-long event brought to Plattsburgh by the Montreal speaker.

“We wanted to make young women aware of the fact these things are happening,” said Danylewich, who serves as director of White Tiger, a professional security consulting group that specializes in personal safety. “We wanted to debunk the myth some people have that this happens only in bigger cities. It can happen anywhere.”

Danylewich said he was inspired to start the Girl Conference Series as a way to commemorate the lives of 14 young women shot Dec. 6, 1989, in Montreal’s École Polytechnique Massacre.

The women were murdered by Marc Lépine, who blamed women for him not being accepted into the engineering school.

Lépine went into a school and separated the women and the men in the classroom and executed the young women before committing suicide.

After the shootings, Canada recognized the day to remember the victims but Danylewich said just having a day to remember the loss of the female students wasn’t enough, he wanted to work on preventative training for young women.

“It’s important to commemorate them, but also to use their

story to proactively educate others,” said Danylewich. “We wanted to turn that terrible day into something good.”

The Nov. 3 conference included self-defense demonstrations

by Mya Khan and musical performances by Canadian artists Shaharah and Anastasia, testimonies of young women who have been in abusive relationships.

State University of New York at Plattsburgh Gender and Womens studies professor Dr. Simona Sharoni did an exercise with the young women to list ingredients of a healthy relationship.

Shahara said one of the reasons she wanted to participate in the Girl Conference Series was because when she was 17, she was in an verbally, mentally and financially abusive relationship.

“When I was their age I didn’t know about all the types of abuse. For me abuse just meant physical so I thought to myself as long as someone wasn’t hitting me that I was being respected and was being loved in the proper way,” Shaharah said. “I think its great to be involved in teaching these girls about all the different types of abuse and what their local resources are so that when they do recognize that they are in abusive relationship they know what to do and where to go.”

Beekmantown school counselor Jennifer Duffy said she and other staff members thought the conference would be beneficial to young girls as they prepare to leave their parents’ homes for college, giving them knowledge of what to do in an emergency.

“We wanted them to learn some safety tips that they should be made aware of in certain situations,” said Duffy.

“If even one girl from the conference learned something that will get them out of a bad relationship or prevents them from being beaten, it was worth it,” said Danylewich.
