PLATTSBURGH — North Country firefighters have received some support through the help of Georgia-Pacific.

The Mooers and South Plattsburgh volunteer fire departments were recently awarded a $5,000 Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade grant, chosen from more than 120 applicants in Georgia-Pacific facility communities in 23 states. The departments will share the grant to fund a combined fire department project that will allow the two departments to jointly provide critical rehabilitation equipment to several departments, emergency personnel and residents of Clinton County.

“As in many communities, the majority of the firefighters that protect our homes, businesses and communities are volunteers,” said Chris Trombley, chairman of the Clinton County Air Response Board. “Grants and programs such as the GP Bucket Brigade Program are very critical to agencies such as ours who do not always have the resources needed to fulfill our mission.”

Private industry, said Trombley, is “a key player in emergency preparedness.”

“Georgia Pacific has always exemplified the importance of how critical this relationship is through their support of the emergency services in the communities they operate in,” he said.

“I would like to congratulate the Mooers and South Plattsburgh fire departments on receiving a 2010 GP Bucket Brigade Grant. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you

Launched in 2006, the Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade has contributed more than $600,000 to rural and small town fire units in communities with Georgia-Pacific facilities.

The program supports firefighters with cash donations for programming and purchasing necessary equipment, and with materials for fire safety education in local schools. This

year ’s grants totaled $175,000, the largest amount awarded in the program’s history.

“We know first-hand the significant role these fire units play in the life of a community. The Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade is one way we say ‘thank you’ for their work,” said Georgia-Pacific chief executive officer and president Jim Hannan. “Many of our own employees are members of their local fire and rescue units, so we also know the need for the financial support necessary to safely continue the work these departments do.”

First ‘Taste of Home’ has sold-out crowd Plans in works to bring event back next year, organizers say

The first-ever Taste of Home Cooking School held in Plattsburgh was a “huge success” according to comments Denton Publications associate publisher Ed Coats said he received from the event last Saturday at the Crete Civic Center.

“I couldn’t believe how great the turnout was,” said Coats, who estimated more than 1,100 attended what turned out to be a sold out show. “I knew we’d have a really good crowd, but selling out the show was just amazing.

“Michael did a great job,” said Coats. “It was nice having a chef with such an extensive background be here to give people such great demonstrations. He really wowed them.”

Having many giveaways and great support from local vendors — many of whom contributed items as raffle prizes — also lent to the success of the show, said Coats.

“We had so many great vendors with lots of different things for people to see, try and especially buy,” said Coats. “There really was something for everyone.”

Given the reaction to this year ’s event, Coats said he’s looking forward to bringing it back to Plattsburgh next year.

“We’ve had a lot of great feedback and a lot of people asking us to bring it back next year,” said Coats. “We want to expand it even more and bring in more great local ven-

dors like we had this year, maybe do some more giveaways. We’re going to work to make it even bigger and better.”

“I really want to thank the City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department for doing such a great job helping us host this event and all our fine sponsors,” said Coats. “But, most of all, I want to thank everyone who came out to Taste of Home. They made this a true success.”

“There’s a need for something like this here,” said Coats. “I’ve heard it over and over. People want events like this. And, this just proves that Plattsburgh and places like the Crete Civic Center can handle big events.”

The show featured more than two hours of cooking instruction from culinary specialist Michael Barna, who has conducted Taste of Home shows throughout New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey. Barna’s playful banter with the crowd and his ability to walk attendees through easy-to-make recipes was huge for the show’s draw, said Coats.

The best of your broadband Holiday stress and caregiving

hree years ago, if I asked in a networking class how many students still had dial-up roughly a third of the class would raise their hand. Today, the number has dwindled to one or two, which may be due to broadband service being more prevalent with lower costs.

As a broadband subscriber I want two things: the always-on dedicated line and performance meeting the advertised rates. My broadband provider, Charter, offers free security software which I choose not to use but other subscribers do and they are generally happy with it. How do I know if I’m getting what I’m paying for? By that I mean mostly the download rate?

We first looked at a company called Ookla in June 2008, who offers Web-based testing of a broadband connection. The test is freely available to anyone who wants to assess the high-speed connection but it uses Flash so users of browsers not supporting Flash like 64-bit Internet Explorer cannot perform the test.

The results of steps two and three are reported as a number of Mega bits per second. My result with the Burlington server was a whopping 10.49Mbps download and 1.07Mbps for upload which are both decent speeds.

oliday celebrations can be disruptive for any family, but caregiving families can be particularly affected, according to Dr. Vicki Rackner, author of “The Personal Health Journal.” The season of joy and interaction with family and community can create more burdens for caregivers and can create reminders of alienation and loneliness.

Caregivers frequently fall victim to “holiday traps,” preconceived ideas about how the holidays should be and what should happen. Here are a few of these common traps, as well as some ideas about how to avoid them: Planning for the worst. Thinking that this might be the loved one’s last holiday, and going overboard with that idea in mind.

Trying to create picture-perfect scenes.

There really is no perfect holiday celebration, but caregivers can certainly establish rules that work for their situation. Ask family members for one or two ideas that will make the holiday special for them.

Spending the way out of guilt. For caregivers that are caught between two generations, the most obvious solution to ease pangs of guilt is to spend.

Joyce is a short-haired tiger car born in March 2008 found outside a home in Peru. She was very leery of people but has since decided that humans can be good, She has tested negative for FeLV/FIV, and has been vaccinated and spayed.

This only works in the short-term, and eventually feelings of guilt will return with a vengeance. Teach children that the holidays are about spending time with loved ones, and use the season as an opportunity to impress upon them the joy that comes from giving.

Forcing happiness. Caregivers feel pressure to act as though everything is fine, even if it isn’t. Acknowledge sadness, anger, and disappointment. Covering these emotions doesn’t make them go away.

Overdoing social obligations. Set limits, and don’t be afraid to say no. The pressure to accept every invitation can be overwhelming.

Why not suggest a separate get-together, after the holiday season, when everyone has more free time?

With one win, state reps see mandate for the middle

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com It wasn’t even close last Tuesday night as Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey, R-Peru, overcame opposition from both sides of the political spectrum and trounced her two challengers.

And with this single victory, the region’s socially centrist Republican state representatives see a political mandate from area voters in support of moderate policy stances.

Duprey said in order to remain viable in one of the bluest states in the union, the GOP must maintain a broad and tolerant perspective.

“We’ve got to be more all-encompassing in the Republican Party if we’re going to reach out to everybody. I like to think that’s where I’ve always been,” she said.

“But I think it’s been more clear in this past year than it has in the past.”

Duprey enjoyed strong support from Republicans, independents and Democrats.

Assemblywoman Teresa R. Sayward, R-Willsboro, is part of an all-

female Republican voting block that includes Duprey and their outgoing colleague Dede Scozzafava.

“I’ve never thought our region is all that conservative, especially when it comes to social issues,” she said. “Quite frankly, I just think people are closer to the middle than anybody would like to admit.”

Moderate Republicans are arguing that in New York’s North Country, the Tea Party movement is only representative of a vocal, but small minority of the actual population.

Conservatives and Tea Party activists have been extremely vocal ever since North Country Republicans picked Dede Scozzafava as their nominee for New York’s 23rd Congressional District seat last year. The intra-party revolt that followed doomed Scozzafava’s bid, led to the first election of a Democrat in the district since the Civil War and, for a time, made her Assembly backers — primarily Duprey and Teresa Sayward — seemingly vulnerable.

Conservative David Kimmel’s

challenge to Duprey is a direct result of the right's anger with centrist Republicans. Days before the election, it was widely speculated Kimmel could potentially funnel enough votes away from Duprey to hand the seat to Democrat Rudy Johnson.

But Kimmel drew less than 20 percent of the vote and Duprey easily won reelection.

“I think that we have got to get a bigger tent. I think that my campaign, on a statewide basis, says we can step outside of what was once considered sacred ground for the Republican Party,” she said. “I have always been pro choice. I voted for the dignity for all students act. How can you not say you can’t be bullying children for any reason at any time in our school system?”

The region’s Tea Party was not directly involved in Kimmel’s bid because it is not registered with the state Board of Elections, though he did attend many of the group’s meetings.

ow that November is here, any nice sunny day gives me the urge to be outside getting the gardens ready for winter. There is a lot of work that can be done now such as weeding, mulching, and cleaning up plant material that has died with the recent cold weather.

There are also many tasks that we must hold off on until the weather has gotten a bit colder.

One of these tasks is wrapping evergreen shrubs, such as boxwoods, arborvitaes, yews, and hemlocks, with burlap. We wrap these evergreens to help prevent browning of the foliage. The main reason winter damage occurs in these plants is when the sun and wind cause excessive transpiration (foliage water loss) while the soil is frozen. The frozen soil prevents the plants from being able to replace the lost water. This results in desiccation and browning of the plant tissue.

Foliar damage often occurs on the south, southwest, and windward side of the plants.

During a harsh winter, foliar damage can occur on all of the shrub. New transplants or plants with succulent, late season growth are particularly sensitive.

Protection can be created out of burlap and stakes. The barrier should be on the sides of the plant with the top remaining uncovered.

The stakes can be pounded into the ground now, while the soil is not frozen. It is best to wait to wrap the plant until the ground is frozen so not to disrupt the shrub’s internal winter preparation, known as hardening off.

If an evergreen has suffered winter injury, wait until mid-spring before pruning out injured foliage. Brown foliage is most likely dead and will not green up, but the buds, which are more cold hardy than foliage, will often grow and fill in areas where brown foliage was removed. If the buds have not survived, prune dead branches back to living tissue.

Fertilize injured plants in early spring and water them well throughout the season. Provide appropriate protection the following winter.

“I was very surprised and yes I did feel vulnerable,” she said. “I didn’t know how strong this wave was, but I had hoped that calmer heads would prevail and they certainly did in this election.”

While Tea Party-backed candidates won several congressional elections in other states, the movement’s effectiveness in upstate New York is suspect at best. Democrat Bill Owens won reelection, in part, because of the local GOP schism.

His colleague Scott Murphy was handily defeated by Republican challenger Chris Gibson in New York’s 20th Congressional District.

But even here, the apparent moderate nature of the region was visible as Murphy carried only one county on Election Day — the Republican-heavy county of Essex.

During the campaign, Gibson took some heat from the right for his stance on abortion.

In a recent interview, Owens also said he believes the North Country is primarily populated by those in the political center.

John Gereau returns from ‘the perfect hunt’ T

he big buck appeared like a shadow in the early morning Manitoba light, and began methodically making his way toward my stand, stopping occasionally to test the wind or nose the ground for signs of danger or other deer.

It is easy to allow your mind to wonder during the hours of solitude spent in the forest — picturing the ideal spot for a monster whitetail to make an entrance.

I think we all do it — envision which route or trail an experienced brute might take — visualize him walking through a sliver of light along a faint runway carved into the forest floor.

On this morning, I don’t think I could have scripted it better.

He first came into sight like a ghost emerging from a tangle of dense brush — exactly as I had envisioned an experienced deer would. Then, he strode proudly along a well-used trail that promised to bring him easily within bow range.

“He’s a nice buck, I am definitely going to take him,” I whispered to my hunting partner, Mike Fenoff, as I eased my way into a

solid shooting position.

I caught a glint of antler at 60 yards, and took a deep breath to calm my nerves.

While some shots with a bow happen as quickly as it takes to raise and draw, others seem to unfold like a television drama.

This was proving more the latter, giving me almost too much time to mull the shot while nervously willing the deer on.

For the moment at least, he continued to steadily close ground.

Then, just as it seemed the buck would emerge under my stand, the heavy eightpointer seemed to vanish into the thick Canadian bush as quickly as he appeared.

“Where did he go?” I said in a hushed tone and Mike answered remorsefully, “I don’t know.”

It was the fourth morning of a fully-guided bow hunt in Minnedosa, Manitoba. Mike had tagged out a few days earlier on a dandy 11-pointer with gnarly dark antlers and then offered to man a video camera in hopes of capturing my hunt on tape.

Our guide was Ernie Noordenbos of Little Saskatchewan Outfitters. Both Ernie and his son, Kevin, are disabled — Ernie from a

fall while working as a heavy equipment mechanic and Kevin from a car accident that left him comatose and then with a life-altering brain injury.

Ironically, it was our disabilities that brought us together.

Because of his personal experience and family history, Ernie believes strongly in helping those with physical limitations. For this reason, he offers discounts to members of the Physically Challenged Bowhunters Association, of which I am a member.

It was this common affiliation that led to me booking a hunt with Ernie, and I’ve been two years waiting anxiously to make it happen.

Because of my left hand paralysis, Manitoba also gave me the opportunity to use a crossbow during its regular archery season.

New York is not as permissive with the use of crossbows among its state’s disabled hunters — only paraplegics who fire with assistance from a blow tube are allowed to use them during our archery season.

We saw 17 deer the first day in Manitoba, which was capped by Mike downing his largest buck ever with a bow, or any other firearm for that matter.

Then, a nasty cold front weather forecasters compared to a category three hurricane settled in bringing sleet, snow and 50 mph wind. Needless to say, deer activity tapered

dramatically and I was beginning to question my chances of filling my tag.

That is, until the heavy eight made an appearance.

But, the deer had vanished into the same thick underbrush from which it appeared, and for what seemed an eternity neither Mike or I could find his dark outline.

Fortunately, he was never far away.

Just minutes after the deer had ducked into the bush, he reappeared, this time intent on following the runway two does had taken earlier, directly under our stand.

As Mike videotaped, the deer made his way to within 50 yards, then 40, then 30. At 25 yards, I stopped him with a bleat and sent an arrow home. The shot was true and he dropped in sight.

It has been said that harvesting a mature whitetail with a bow cannot be described, only felt by those who have earned the feeling.

I could not have said it better myself.

Discussion on healing after suicide loss Nov. 20 Conference to emphasize those left behind are not alone

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Jamie L. Basiliere knows what it’s like to have a loved one taken away too soon. She’s also among those who have lost their loved one to a very taboo subject — suicide.

Last November, Basiliere’s nephew, Casey Briggs, a 23-yearold sergeant in the Army Reserves, completed suicide. It was a year after he had returned from serving in the War in Iraq.

“We surmised he had post-traumatic stress disorder,” said Basiliere.

The loss of Briggs was a devastating one for his family, said Basiliere, and one still difficult to

talk about a year later. However, Basiliere said she felt it was important to talk about her family’s loss to others going through the same thing. That’s why she’ll be the featured speaker at “Healing After Suicide Loss,” a conference hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of the Champlain Valley next Saturday, Nov. 20.

“We want people to know they’re not alone,” Basiliere said, referring to those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

According to statistics from www.suicide.org, 32,637 suicides were recorded in 2005, with the majority reported being elderly white men. Suicides in youths ages 15-24 totaled 4,212.

However, Basiliere wants peo-

ple to know those who complete suicide should never be known as just a statistic or for their final act.

“That last event does not define their life. It does not define my nephew. It doesn’t define anyone,” she said. “When people think back on their loved one, hopefully they can work through the sadness and find the joy they brought to their lives in the first place.”

Healing After Suicide Loss will be held in the State University of New York at Plattsburgh Angell College Center beginning with registration at 11:30 a.m., and the conference at 12 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

s an alternative to peanut butter, try this easy and inexpensive recipe using healthy, protein packed sunflower seeds. They are power packed with health benefits.

Sunflower seeds contain high levels of vitamin E, choline, betaine, and phenolic acids. Vitamin E may protect against cardiovascular disease, lignans may protect against some cancers, and choline has been shown to play a role in memory and cognitive functions. They are also among the best foods you can eat to get cholesterol-lowering phytosterols. It is important to use raw sunflower seeds for this recipe. The best place to buy them is in bulk section in your supermarket or health food store.

Another ingredient in Homemade Sunbutter is grapeseed oil which contains high

levels of essential fatty acids.

Grapeseed oil is among the highest in heart-healthy linoleic acid and among the lowest in saturated fats.

These high levels of linoleic acid are useful in lowering blood cholesterol levels.

Containing no cholesterol and no sodium, grape seed oil has a light, nutty taste which brings out the flavor in many foods. Proanthocyanidins found in grapeseed oil, contain a higher level of antioxidants than either vitamins C or E. The last ingredient in this recipe is Stevia, which is optional but it enhances the flavor of the recipe. You could substitute a little bit of honey or agave nectar if you’d like. Stevia is a type of plant that has very sweet leaves. Stevia extract can be 300 times sweeter than sugar so start with just a little

and sweeten to taste. Stevia has been shown to have no impact blood sugar levels. It is a very low-calorie sweetener, however it has not yet been approved by the FDA and is sold as a supplement. It can be found in the health food section of your supermarket or at a health food store.

Homemade Sunbutter 2 cups raw sunflower seeds 3 Tbsp. grapeseed oil Stevia, honey, or agave nectar to taste (optional) In the oven, on a cookie sheet, lightly toast the sunflower seeds until lightly browned.

You may have to take them out and stir them up a few times. Keep a close eye on them. It doesn’t take long for them to brown and you wouldn’t want to burn them.

Transfer the seed to a food processor and grind into a powder.

Add the grapeseed oil one tablespoon at a time and process to a creamy consistency.

This will take a while. You should let your food processor rest a few times and scrape

down the sides to keep things moving.

Once you have a creamy consistency, give it a taste. You can choose to add a sweetener at this time or be done.

Use this recipe in place of peanut butter in any recipe. Try it on celery or bananas for a healthy quick snack. I’d love to hear how this recipe turns out for you. Please feel free to e-mail me. Operation Christmas Child looking for donations

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The First Assembly of God has begun its participation in Operation Christmas Child.

The annual campaign involves the church collecting shoe boxes full of school supplies, hygiene products and toys for needy children overseas as part of a national effort overseen by Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization.

Rita D. Alford, coordinator for the local church’s collection center, said the church aims to collect 4,800 shoe boxes — a slight increase over the 4,489 collected locally last year.

Alford said the church did well last year considering it was the first year since it lost a collection center in Vermont that provided a great deal of boxes toward the Plattsburgh center ’s overall donation to Samaritan’s Purse.

“This year we’ve upped the amount because now we’re sending boxes to Haiti,” said Alford.

Previously, boxes weren’t ac-

cepted in Haiti, said Alford, but in the wake of the earthquake that ravaged the Caribbean country earlier this year, relief efforts have been more welcomed.

This year, Operation Christmas Child will also potentially see more donations locally with the addition of relay centers in Westport and Ogdensburg.

“Usually, wherever we have a extra relay center, that area tends to increase in shoeboxes,” said Alford. “It makes it easier for them to go to Westport than all the way to Plattsburgh to drop them off. Usually, there’s also more excitement in the community because right there they have a local connection.”

Donations will be collected for Operation Christmas Child from Monday, Nov. 15, through Monday, Nov. 22. Shoe boxes will be assembled and joined with already-completed shoe boxes for shipment Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Donors may take an empty shoe box or small plastic container and fill it with gifts for a girl or boy child. Boxes are then organized by volunteers by age category — ages 2-4, 5-9 and 10-14

— and by gender before being distributed. Those donating boxes are encouraged to donate $7 per box to cover transportation costs.

Boxes may be dropped off at the First Assembly of God on Prospect Avenue Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m., through Nov. 23.

For those who have never helped Operation Christmas Child, Alford said there’s no time like the present.

“It’s just amazing that we can reach a child in another country that feels like they’re forgotten with all the things going on in the world like the war, famine, disease and natural disasters,” she said. “The fact somebody that they don’t even know would care enough to put a shoebox together for them really touches their hearts and their parents’ hearts.”

PLATTSBURGH — If you’re hearing bells, it could be that you’re in love, but chances are it’s because the Salvation Army of Plattsburgh has kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign.

The leadership of the local Salvation Army chapter marked the start of its 2010 fundraising season Nov. 4 during a press conference at Champlain Centre.

Capt. Laurence Goodman, director of the local chapter, noted Red Kettle bellringers will now be seen throughout the region encouraging donations for the Christianbased nonprofit organization. Though the Salvation Army is arguably most recognized for its Red Kettle Campaign bellringers, Goodman noted it’s really the only way the organization actively seeks donations.

“Most major corporations have several fundraisers a year, whether it be a carnival or comedian coming in or a steak roast.

There are many different ways. We have one,” said Goodman. “Yes, it’s a major fundraiser that last for several weeks, but once we’re done that’s it.”

The money raised by the Red Kettle Campaign makes up roughly one-third of the chapter ’s annual budget. The other twothirds is divided among proceeds from the chapter ’s thrift store on Montcalm Avenue

that’s just enough to meet the overwhelming demand.

“We served over 10,400 people in our soup kitchen alone last year, 600 with our food pantry and 8,000 received free produce,” said Goodman.

What tells the leadership of the Salvation Army that they’re doing a good job of managing their money is if they don’t have to cut programs, Goodman said.

“And, we’re moving forward, not only meeting but hopefully expanding. That’s what we’ve been doing each year.

Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett, who made the ceremonial first donation to the Red Kettle Campaign for the year, commended the Salvation Army for meeting the needs of the community as they continue to grow.

“I’ve often said the fabric of a quality community is woven by many, many special organizations and volunteers and not the least of which at all is the Salvation Army,” said Bassett.

Bellringers are again needed this year, said Goodman, with those interested in volunteering their time urged to contact the local Salvation Army office at 561-2951. Program to introduce healthy lifestyle, Scouting to young girls

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Morrisonville Girl Scout Service Unit is again introducing Scouting to young girls in the region while bringing in some fun.

Last year, the service unit held an arts club which introduced various art forms to girls in kindergarten through 12th grade as one of the Girl Scout Pathways — which is just another way for girls to partake in Scouting.

“It’s a pathway that girls can be a part of Girl Scouting, maybe opposed to the troop pathway

which might be meeting every week, every other week,” explained Lauren Currie, leadership development model coach for the Morrisonville Girl Scout Service Unit.

This year, the service unit will host “Fun with Movement,” featuring yoga, Zumba, ballet, hiphop dance, bowling, and silly, goofy games.

“We really want to do something with movement, so each month there’s going to be a new type of activity that the girls will be able to engage in,” Currie said.

“Ultimately, we as a unit are taking more ownership of

healthy lifestyles, healthy living,” she added. “It’s a huge priority for Girl Scouts to encourage our members to have exposure to activities that promote healthy living.”

The monthly gatherings will be held at St. Joseph’s Church in Treadwells Mills, beginning at 6 p.m. They will be held Tuesdays, Nov. 16, Dec. 14, Jan. 11, Feb. 15, March 15, and April 12, with girls able to attend one or all of the meetings.

Currie also noted the program is not just for girls within the Morrisonville Service Unit, but in other areas as well.

“We had girls last year from

Peru, from Beekmantown, who weren’t necessarily Girl Scouts,” she said, “but in a way joined Girl Scouting to be a part of the series and then were given the option to continue Girl Scouting as part of a troop or individually or just when these kinds of events are held.”

The program is family-friendly, Currie added, and parents are welcome to join in with their daughters.

“We never exclude any adults from participating,” she explained. “In the art program last year we had some parents stay with their daughters, do the art projects with their daughters.

Often we see that there’s girls of different ages and their siblings and they’ll join as a family.”

The cost to join Fun with Movement is $15, which covers membership for the whole program and supplies. However, if cost is an issue, Currie said there is financial assistance available.

CBP officers donate clothing seized in Champlain Donation helps St. Mary’s Mission Center jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — One bad deed has turned into a good one.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations recently donated more than 2,300 pieces of seized counterfeit children’s clothing to the St. Mary’s Mission Center, a non-profit organization in Champlain which supports families in and around the North Country.

The items were seized at the Champlain Port of Entry in February after CBP officers and Import Specialists targeted a shipment of clothing destined to Hollywood, Calif.

Inspection of the shipment revealed the children’s clothing, which included shirts and pants bearing the logos of cartoon characters Spongebob Squarepants, Tweety Bird and Sylvester, contained counterfeit trademarks. The manufacturer ’s suggested retail price of the clothing was $35,000.

“The hard work and dedication of the CBP employees at the Port of Champlain made it possible to donate the children’s clothing to the local charity,” Paul Stephan Mongillo, CBP Port Director of the Champlain Port of Entry, said in a prepared state-

ment.

“This is a win-win situation,” added Diann Snell, CBP Fines, Penalties & Forfeitures Officer for the Champlain Port of Entry. “The counterfeit goods are not permitted for sale in the U.S. and the goods are being distributed to families in need.”

According to information from CBP, the agency is responsible for enforcing trade laws and preventing the distribution of counterfeit merchandise. Upon completion of the administrative forfeiture procedures, seized merchandise may be donated to relief efforts and to charity, with the trademark owner ’s approval. Products that threaten the health and safety of American consumers are destroyed.

Fred Stone, co-director of St. Mary’s Mission Center, said the donation was greatly appreciated. Stone said he had reached out to CBP letting them know if items such as these were ever found and able to be donated, they would be of great help to the center.

“We had written them a letter asking that because we would hate to have seen perfectly good clothing thrown out,” said Stone.

“The need in this area is not diminishing at all, so we’re rattling every bush we can.”

Accident survivor gives thanks to her heroes

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — Charlena Scroggins considers herself lucky to be alive.

The 19-year-old Plattsburgh woman was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident Aug. 14 on Kent Falls Road. It was one that almost cost her her life, yet one she has a hard time recalling.

“I don’t remember much from the day of the accident,” said Scroggins.

“I remember I was upset because my grandfather had passed away three days before ... I just left the house and got in my car and didn’t know where I was heading to. I was just driving.”

Scroggins had made it to the end of Kent Falls Road where she parked her car and got out to sit on the banks of the Saranac River. What she does remember is getting back into her car and leaving. After that, her memories are hard to piece together.

“I remember looking at my speedometer then the next thing I know I’m going off the road toward a big pipe,” she said.

Scroggins’ car struck a pipe off the embankment, leaving her trapped on the side of the road in a place unlikely where motorists would find her.

Fortunately, New York State Police Trooper Shawn Davies was patrolling the area, and came across Scroggins’ car an unknown amount of time later.

“I just barely saw the car. I caught

the glare out of the corner of my eye,” he said.

Davies exited his vehicle and hurried to Scroggins’ vehicle, not knowing what to expect.

“As soon as I was walking down to her car, I heard her yell for help,” said Davies. “That’s when I called for everybody.”

Emergency responders from the Morrisonville Volunteer Fire Depart-

ment and Morrisonville Ambulance Service raced to the scene where Scroggins had to be extricated after it was found her leg was trapped on the driver ’s side of the vehicle, preventing her from escaping. She was then airlifted by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Helicopter to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., where she spent weeks recovering from her injuries.

“When I got out of the hospital I

couldn’t do anything for myself. I couldn’t feed myself, anything,” said Scroggins.

However, given the extent of the damage to her vehicle, Davies said he was surprised anyone could have survived the wreck.

“It’s amazing,” said Davies.

However, Scroggins was able to recently meet the men and women directly involved with her rescue — from rescuers to dispatchers and even the wrecker service that removed her vehicle — walking into the Morrisonville fire station with a neck brace as the only real visible sign she had been in a major accident. It was a miracle she even survived, said many of the responders.

“It was one of the most difficult scenes that we had in quite a long time,” said Morrisonville Fire Chief Steven P. Brown. “Everyone did a great job.”

“I just can’t thank them enough,” said Scroggins. “I can’t even put it into words. I wouldn’t have my life if it wasn’t for them.”

“I’ve tried to write letters thanking everyone for everything but I can’t find the words,” said her father, Glenn. “What they’ve done means more than I could ever tell them.”

No thanks were necessary, they said.

“The fact she was able to walk through the door here is the only thanks we need,” said EMS Captain Kent Faus. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Though Scroggins was there to thank her rescuers, she was given her own token of appreciation — an honorary membership of the two departments.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon celebrating fifth year anniversary ‘Bowling for Books’ event part of sorority’s giving back

By Anayely Garcia ana@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The sisters of Sigma Lambda Upsilon are a relatively new sorority in the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, having existed for only five years. However, being new hasn’t held them back from becoming a well-respected sorority on campus.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon, better known as “Las Señoritas Latinas Unidas,” was founded at SUNY Plattsburgh in the fall 2005 semester by six women — Melissa Garcia, Ivonne Gomez, Alysia Velez, Stephanie Ruiz, Tanya Henry and Carol Olate.

“Our chapter [Alpha Epsilon] was founded by six phenomenal women because at that time there wasn’t any culturally-based recognized organizations on campus,” said Olate. “We saw how much more we could bring to the campus, especially at that time where there was even less diversity in Plattsburgh.”

Aside from diversity as being one of their main goals, Sigma Lambda Upsilon strives to teach others about multicultural enrichment, reaching their full potential in academic excellence, and expanding literacy,

The sorority will host “Bowling for Books,” an annual book drive open to the public at North Bowl Lanes, off State Route 9, to kick off their fifth year anniversary, Thursday, Nov. 18, alongside Sigma Tau

“We rent out [the bowling alley] the whole night and everyone who comes in donates a book and you get a pair of bowling shoes and play two games for $7,” said Olate.

Aside from bowling, Sigma Lambda Upsilon will also hold a raffle that will allow for attendees to win prizes. A shuttle service in front of the Angell College Center will also be available for students who do not have transportation to the event.

Proceeds will benefit Better World Books and Journey Into Reading, both of which raise awareness for youth literacy. The book drive will be ongoing and donations will be accepted year-round. At the end of the year, books and donations will be sent to their respective foundations.

“With literacy you can empower so many people,” said Caballero. “Literacy is centered on so many cultures and people; we are empowering children, men, and women.”

In a campus and community where minorities are relatively small in numbers, Sigma Lambda Upsilon continues to teach about multiculturalism.

“We strive to educate others about the importance of diversity,” added Caballero.

Restaurants, businesses to compete in ‘Wing Wars’ Event to help North Country Life Flight

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — Restaurants and businesses from around the region are once again vying to see who has the best chicken wings. And, they’re doing it to benefit a good cause.

Wing Wars will return to Wiseguys this Sunday, Nov. 14, creating a friendly competition among eight eateries wanting to take home the title of best wings. Participating businesses each provide 500 wings for attendees to chow down on during the four-hour event to benefit North Country Life Flight.

“It’s really a great event,” said Mary Jane Connors, president and chief executive officer of North Country Life Flight. “People look forward to it because it’s a lot of fun.”

The event, now in its third year, gives attendees the chance to sample wings in an all-you-can-eat format for $12. Proceeds help North Country Life Flight provide free air medical rescue service to people in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, St. Lawrence, Warren, Washington, Hamilton, Herkimer and portions of Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Events like Wing Wars make all the difference when it comes to being able to provide their service, said Connors.

“People may think $12 isn’t going to make a huge difference, but when you add that to another $12 and another $12, that’s what makes us able to fly someone,” said Connors. “Every dime we get donated helps out.”

In its inaugural year, Wing Wars raised $595. That amount nearly tripled last year when the event raised $1,635, said Connors.

“This year, we’ll be adding some other things to help keep raising more money,” she said.

Raffles are anticipated to help add to the draw of Wing Wars, with two items especially expected to be a hit — a lightweight kayak, donated by Saratoga Eagle, distributors of Yuengling, and a family pack of four tickets to Smucker ’s Stars on Ice in Lake Placid.

However, the food alone is enough to draw many, said Jim Williams, vice president and sales manager of WSLP 93.3 FM, the event’s sponsor.

“Everyone who attended the event for the past two years has been surprised and impressed with the variety of creative and tasty wing recipes cooked up for Wing Wars,” said Williams, “and enjoy eating, voting and helping to save lives by supporting North Country Life Flight. Plans now in motion for city’s next half-marathon

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — At the Oct. 28 meeting of the Plattsburgh Common Council, plans were approved for the second annual Plattsburgh Half Marathon, scheduled for April 17, 2011.

“There wasn’t even a single question,” said superintendent of recreation Steve Peters, referring to the councilmen. “Everybody knows what it is and what it does. It was so well received from last year that they were very happy to do it again.”

The biggest change runners will notice during the race is the increase of participants. The first half-marathon, held this past April, allowed only 500 runners. The city has approved an increase to 1,000 runners.

“We had a wait list of 250 people last year,” Peters explained of the increase.

Another change Peters is currently working on is to be certi-

fied by USA Track & Field, which will allow halfmarathoners to qualify to take part in larger races.

“This race can qualify somebody for a more prestigious race such as they could be in something like the New York Marathon,” said Peters. “That certification is really important for us and that’s something we’re working on getting.”

Peters is planning on having a new Web site launched to allow participants easy access to information.

“We’re trying to pull it all together and then have it all there,” he said. “We’re trying to put it all together on this Web site and throw that out there so hopefully it will be successful.”

Peters said registration will open Wednesday, Dec. 1, with the USATF certification hopefully in place by then. More information about the halfmarathon will be available in the coming weeks.

Seminar on business growth strategies at chamber next Friday PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Small Business Development Center, Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce/SCORE and TD Bank will host Growth Strategies for Success, a seminar to help identify opportunities and plan for more profits, Friday, Nov. 19.

The seminar will be held at the chamber of commerce offices at 7061 State Route 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will be shown how to identify the key drivers to individual business and how to develop a forecast template that builds on past successes. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding financial ratios and recognizing what lenders will need to see to support investment in a growth plan.

Those attending are encouraged to bring a laptop to the event, if possible.

The fee for the seminar is $20 for chamber members and $30 for nonmembers.

Northern Tier Tour From page 1 event, which was put together to encourage people to think local when shopping this holiday season.

“We want people to visit the different businesses up our way before they get into the heavy shopping season,” explained Tetreault. “We want people to see it’s worth the trip to come up or down or across or whatever way they have to to visit us.”

Several businesses have signed on to participate in the event, including North Country Floral and Gifts, Hairstyles Unlimited, Amazing Grace Winery, Vescoridge Vineyards, and the Chazy branch of TD Bank.

“It’s nothing too elaborate. We’re inviting people in, putting on some Christmas music,” said Tetreault. “Basically, giving people a chance to get familiar with what we have to offer.”

Even though the focus of the tour is to get people excited about shopping locally, Tetreault said she and her fellow business owners have found a way to sweeten the pot for people who come out for the event.

“We’re going to give shoppers cards that they can have stamped at each business, and, for every stamp they have, they’ll get an entry to win a gift basket that we’re all going to contribute to,” said Tetreault, who added special sales and discounts will also be offered at different locations on the tour.

Tetreault said she’s also hoping to reach out to people’s generosity by collecting donations of toys and money for the The Christmas Bureau, a nonprofit organization which helps low-income families in Clinton County who are in need at Christmastime.

Though the event is originating in Chazy, Tetreault said she hopes it will go beyond the hamlet’s borders.

“We figured by calling it the Northern Tier Holiday Open House Tour, if anyone between here and Rouses Point wants to get involved with it, they can and we can update our list as we go along,” she said.

Regardless of how many other businesses choose to participate or not, Tetreault said she wants to at least get people thinking about shopping at places other than big box retailers.

“It’s definitely more personalized with us and the ambience is more conducive to the holiday spirit as opposed to the mad rush of the bigger stores,” she said. “It’s that small town feel. It’s supporting local businesses. That’s important.”

SENIOR PROGRAM ASSISTANT The Alzheimer’s Disease Assistant Center (ADAC), through the Research Foundation of SUNY Plattsburgh, seeks applicants for a part-time position in Elizabethtown, NY as a Senior Program Assistant with the Third Age Adult Day Center. The Sr. Program Assistant will be responsible for all programmatic issues and staff supervision for a small satellite social model adult day program catering to memory impaired elder adults. The Sr. Program Assistant will supervise and/or administer all Elizabethtown Third Age Adult Day Services. Examples include staff and volunteer supervision, scheduling, participant recruitment, marketing, development of care plans, file maintenance, program development and monitoring of day-to-day activities.

The Sr. Program Assistant will work closely with ADAC administrative staff to ensure sound financial oversight of program.

Daily responsibilities will include assisting with activities of daily living and direct personal care, implementation of therapeutic recreation activities to include arts and crafts, music, and cognitive activities. The successful candidate must have good written and oral communication skills. A clean driver’s license, spanning a five year period is also required. Applicants who have earned an associate degree are preferred; however, those with a high school diploma are also encouraged to apply. All applicants must

possess, at minimum, one full year of direct care experience with memory impaired elder adults or developmentally disabled adults.

Background checks and fingerprinting will be required.

Salary and fringe benefits will be determined based on budget, applicant experience and terms of employment.
