Inspiration for the market, said Spaugh, came from a group of farmers in Athens, Ga., who banded together several years ago to host an indoor market during the fall season. Club helps others gear up for the slopes

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Youth Bureau, Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department and City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will host an NBA/WNBA Dribble Dish and Swish Competition Saturday, Nov. 20, at the City Recreation Center on the PARC Oval.

The event is free. Boys and girls will compete separately in age groups 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12 for a chance to move on to the regional competition in New York City. The competition is comprised of an individually timed race involving the participants’ ability to dribble, shoot and pass their way through the competition course. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with competitions starting at 10:30 a.m. Participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and age classifications are based upon the participants’ age as of Feb. 18, 2011.

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — This weekend, the North Country Ski and Snowboard Club is helping you gear up and get ready for the slopes.

According to club advisor Charles Roush, the club gives students in grades 5-12 the opportunity to enjoy the snow.

“Our goal is to bring kids from the surrounding area and introduce them to outdoor activities such as skiing and snowboarding at the local resorts,” Roush explained. “We’re so fortunate to have all these resorts in our backyard, that it gives us an opportunity to get the kids out there on the slopes at an affordable price.”

The club, which began in 1965, is set up through the Youth Commission of the town of Champlain and villages of Champlain and Rouses Point. It also brings in Northeastern Clinton Central School students from Mooers.

Six years ago, the club’s advisors, Pam and Joe Damour, began a ski fair, which will

be held this year at NCCS Saturday, Nov. 6, beginning at 12 p.m.

“What we have are vendors from different ski resort,” Roush explained. “You’ll have representatives from Titus Mountain, Whiteface, Jay Peak, and Smuggler ’s Notch there.”

Roush explained many of the popular ski resorts offer various giveaways, including season passes.

The other part of the ski fair is a swap shop, which allows people to bring in old equipment to try to sell, with 10 percent of the proceeds benefiting the club for transportation fees.

“Anyone that has older equipment that’s still deemed usable on the slopes, it gives them an opportunity to try and sell their stuff at the ski fair,” Roush said.

The actual fair is from 1-3:30 p.m., but

from 12-1 p.m. those wishing to sell items can bring them in to have them evaluated.

“If someone wants to try to figure out what value they should try to sell it at, we can do that for them,” Roush explained.

Another big draw for the ski fair is the raffling of a Burton snowboard.

“One of our chaperones used to work for Burton Snowboards,” said Roush. “She decided one day she would check with her employer and see if they would be interested in donating a snowboard to the ski club and they’ve been doing it ever since.”

Tickets for the snowboard, which is valued at $1,000, are one for $5 or five for $20.

They can be purchased Lakeside Coffee in Rouses Point, or the day of the event.

BEEKMANTOWN — When Robbie Miller, and Carol and Abby Leggett lost all their belongings in a house fire Oct. 15, plans began to take shape to help them replace some of what they lost.

The fire happened at the family’s rented home on Spellman Road in Beekmantown some time around 3 p.m. Abby, who turned 14 that day, was the one to find the fire.

“She came home from school, went into the house and could smell smoke,” explained Carol. “She called her dad and she called 9-1-1, got the dog and got out.”

Abby’s dog, Ebby, then ran back into the house and into Robbie and Carol’s bedroom, where the fire began.

“I think she might have been looking for the rest of us or going to a safe place,” said Carol.

Abby then ran back into the house, was able to save Ebby and make it to safety.

However, she did lose three rabbits and Abby Leggett and her dog, Ebby, were able to make it out two Guinea pigs.

The best apps in life are free Just what’s in your survival kit?

T

here are a number of useful and completely free applications for Windows users that often appear on lists devoted to such things. In addition to a great price, the applications are also supported by Microsoft. This week, we look at three of them.

The first is an image and photo editing application, Paint.NET, that started as a computer science project at Washington State University by a couple of students. The program has an easy to use interface sporting all the essential features one would desire and Paint.NET works with many file formats. Version 3.5.5 was available last April with support for all Windows operating systems up to Windows 7. Find it at www.getpaint.net.

Another application is Windows SteadyState, which is a program that allows anyone to configure and lock down a Windows computer. Users of the PC can do whatever they want while using it but upon reboot the system completely resets itself back to the original configuration. Windows SteadyState is supported on XP and Vista but not officially on Windows 7 although some users in the forum reported no problems running

What if you had to leave your home in a hurry and be gone for three days? According to the October 2010 edition of Aging Arkansas, everyone should keep an emergency disaster kit packed and ready because there may not be time when disaster strikes.

These are some of the basics things everyone should have in an emergency survival kit: Water may not be available if your water supply has become contaminated or shut off. Store at least one gallon of water per person, per day and change stored water every six months.

Food items to include: ready to eat meats, fruits and vegetables; canned or boxed juices, milk and soup; high-energy foods like peanut butter, jelly, low-sodium crackers, granola bars and trail mix; foods for persons on special diets; cookies, hard candy, instant coffee, cereals and powdered milk. Date each item before placing in your kit. Replace items every six months.

Don’t forget a manual can opener.

Law enforcement supervisors earn training certification S A R AT O G A S P R I N G S — Forty-six law enforcement supervisors from across New York State recently attended an annual training conference in Saratoga Springs, sponsored by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association and the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute.

The conferences are conducted annually, and provide officers training and an opportunity to meet with their colleagues around the state and discuss common issues.

Law enforcement supervisors serve as the chief officer in the sheriff’s road patrol division, and are responsible for criminal and traffic law enforcement, sex offender management, investigations, and administrative matters for their divisions. This year, the law enforcement supervisors heard presentations on many topics, including suggested protocols for conducting lineups and show-ups, new legislation, training developments

at the state’s Division of Criminal Justice Services, handling disability claims of officers, and the Secure Communities program offered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Supervisors also received an update on the VINE program, provided by the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute, which allows victims to receive real-time information about the incarcerated status of offenders, and new programs developed by the Sheriffs’ Association to electronically notify a protected person when an order of protection is served on the other party.

New York Sheriffs remain committed to providing education and training to advance the professionalism of all aspects of our Sheriffs’ Offices.

The program is offered without fee to participating counties, which only cover the costs of lodging and meals for their employees.

Knowing your soil basics

H

ow and when to fertilize the garden can seem confusing, but once you understand some soil basics knowing how to care for your garden’s soil is pretty clear. To start, it is important to know there are an awful lot of chemical reactions going on in the soil. These chemical reaction are what makes nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, available for plants to use.

Since plants are using these nutrients up from the soil, we typically remove the plants from our garden either to eat or to prevent disease spreading. Therefore, through gardening we are removing nutrients from the soil and these nutrients must be replaced so next year ’s plants can grow and be healthy.

There are two ways we typically add nutrients back into the soil. One is through man-made chemical fertilizers and the other is through organic material and fertilizers. Both provide nutrients to plants, but they behave in very different manners.

Chemical fertilizers are readily available to the plants. All they need is a warm soil temperature and some water for the plants to be able to use the nutrients. The nutrients in organic matter come from something that once was alive. Horse manure once was

grass. Blood meal comes from blood. For these nutrients to become available to plants, soil microorganisms must break down the organic matter. In addition to the soil microorganisms, this takes time, heat, and water.

Nutrients from organic matter are released over many months into the soil.

Because organic matter is slow to release its nutrients, fall is an ideal time to apply them to the garden. This can be done by simply adding a layer of composted manure, shredded leaves, or compost to the top of the garden. There is no need to till in the soil. The soil creatures will do that work for you. Besides nutrients, these organic materials also add water holding capacity and structure.

Since chemical fertilizers are quick release, fall is not the ideal time to add these to the garden. By next growing season these could be washed away. If you want to add chemical fertilizer, be patient and wait until the spring.

Don’t underestimate the beauty of going it alone

A

s a practice, the opportunity for enjoying complete and utter solitude is rapidly in danger of becoming a lost art.

Possibly, it comes as a result of the difficulties involved in obtaining its primary ingredient, the opportunity to be alone. It is certainly understandable, as wild areas are getting more uncommon amidst an ever encroaching world.

A recent report from the National Park Service reveals the sounds of civilization can now be heard in more than 30 percent of our nation’s wilderness areas. Despite our best efforts to escape, we can no longer hide from the jets overhead, nor the entrails they leave behind on the blank sky.

Even after darkness engulfs the planet, the mysterious voids of the evening sky are not longer immune, as satellites or space stations intrude to leave a paw print on the blank, black blanket that once was the “Great Beyond.”

Climbers atop Mt. Everest regularly use hand-held satellite phones to proclaim they’ve made it; as do astronauts. It has become impossible to escape the din of civilization. As a society, we are heading toward a time when, according to the New York Times, “portable phones, pagers, and data transmis-

sion devices of every sort will keep us terminally in touch.”

However, in a more important aspect, society has become almost terminally out of touch. Our innate need for genuine and constructive aloneness has been lost and forgotten and, in the process, so has a part of all of us.

Over the years, I’ve learned there are times when I don’t need to be in touch or I just don’t want to be. Although humans are surely social animals, we also have a great need to spend time alone.

The scent of solitude provides us with the opportunity to enjoy the companionship of the only individual we will ever share our lives with from the beginning to end — oneself.

With practice, solitude teaches us how to deal with this single companion, how to put up with them and to get the best out of them.

However, without regular opportunities to spend time alone, we’ve become out of practice.

For all of time, man has sought and found such opportunities primarily in natural settings. Nature is where the earth whispers, yet in silence; it makes the loudest noise.

Solitude allows for sounds we can hear in our souls. It comes with a voice that visits dur-

ing quiet periods of personal conversation. It happens outdoors because natural surroundings provide our best opportunities to be still, alone and quiet.

However, there is a great difference between being alone and loneliness. Solitude is quiet time we make for ourselves, while loneliness describes the pain of being alone. In nature, as we all know, we’re never alone.

Thoreau explained, “I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.”

It is interesting to note in many societies that emphasize close-knit family patterns, there are also built-in loopholes to offer an individual an acceptable opportunity to escape, or a way to dissociate from society. Listed among these loopholes are such activities as marathon running, trance dancing, vision quests and hunting.

In fact, it was while spending time alone in hunting camp I began writing this article. Although my camp is not located beyond the clatter of civilization, the roar of a nearby stream and the wind whistling in the pines make it seem as if it is.

There is a major difference between being alone and being lonely. Loneliness occurs when you are all alone and you come to realize you don’t really know your only companion very well.

I recall the story of the Adirondacks’ most famous hermit, Noah John Rondeau. Begin-

ning in 1914, he lived for more than 30 years in the wilds of the Cold River Valley, huddled in a small cabin located nearly 25 miles from the nearest gathering of civilization. He was the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Cold River City” — population of one.

Rondeau was an unusual hermit. He actually enjoyed people, but claimed he enjoyed the woods even more. He earned a nickname as the “Tin Can Hermit” for his habit of hitting up hikers traveling along the NorthvillePlacid Trail for a few cans of grub, which he stored in the nearby Cold River. He came to town to trade furs for staples and often stayed over with a handful of local families.

Between 1946 and 1947, Rondeau spent the entire year in the woods. He maintained a very detailed journal, since he spent most of the time alone. One of his finest journal entries was in respect to solitude. As an avid, practitioner of the art, I’ve always enjoyed his entry for March 13.

“3/13/47: I have been at Cold River City for over a full year, much of the time alone with myself. I find that I am very good company!”

I hope you, too, can take a lone walk in the autumn woods, and enjoy the company.

Bailey honored for supporting mental health services

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Anne Bailey has been named the recipient of this year ’s Lillian B. Redcay Award.

The award was presented to Bailey during a reception at CVPH Medical Center Nov. 1. Bailey was recognized by the Clinton County Community Services Board for her more than 20 years of volunteer work in mental hygiene services.

During the reception, Bailey was credited for being “a valuable resource” during the formation of the Alliance for Mental Illness, which is today known as the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Champlain Valley.

The world of mental illness hit particularly close to Bailey and her husband, Jim, in 1995 when their son, David, committed suicide after a long battle with mental health challenges. Bailey was credited with taking a very personal tragedy and turning it into a “courageous, compassionate and committed attempt to assist all those affected by mental illness,” according to a letter of nomination for Bailey to receive the Redcay Award.

who presented the award to Bailey, said her story is one that is “very moving.”

“You’re a role model for all of us,” he said.

Sherrie Gillette, director of Clinton County Community Mental Health Services, who helped present the award to Bailey, agreed.

“Anne was one of the very first people I met when I came to Clinton County five years ago,” said Gillette, “and it was clear to me then that this woman is a strong advocate for [mental health] services.”

Bailey was humbled by the words of praise but managed to share her thoughts with those in attendance.

“I am very, very honored because it’s quite amazing to be in the company of those who have received the award in the past,” said Bailey.

“I’m very proud of her. She works so hard and is on the phone so much,” said Jim Bailey. “It’s well-deserved.”

The Lillian B. Redcay Award is given to those who have made “outstanding contributions to community mental hygiene services by a volunteer.” The award is given in memory of Lillian Redcay, a local college professor who had “deep convictions about the local mental health movement, family live and public service.”

Christopher Goheens honored as a ‘Young Hero’

The Vermont Air National Guard has recognized 9-year-old Christopher Goheens of Peru with their Young Hero Award. The award is given on a regular basis by VTANG to children who are treated at Vermont Children’s Hospital in Burlington, Vt., honoring “the courage and dignity of real-life young heroes whose battle against disease or injury might otherwise go unrecognized.”

Christopher, who was nominated for the award by Airman Megan Coons, suffered from complications from hypolastic left heart syndrome last December, and spent most of the time since undergoing procedures and operations at both Vermont Children’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.

The award is the latest recognition for Christopher, who was also chosen to be a featured speaker at the Plattsburgh Start! Heart Walk Sept.

“I was really excited. I really liked [the award],” said Christopher, who was humble in talking about the honor.

Christopher ’s mother, Amy Goheens, said her son was shy about receiving the recognition, but thankful.

“He knew he was getting it, but he didn’t know exactly what it was for,” said Amy. “Once he warmed up to the people, he talked to them

a lot, and was very proud.”

The award was issued to Christopher for his “remarkable display of outstanding courage and valor while maintaining a battle against his illness. He has demonstrated that wars are not

only waged by those in uniform.

During this difficult period, he demonstrated great strength, courage, and a love for life in heroic proportions. Christopher ’s distinctive accomplishments reflected great credit upon himself, his fam-

ily, and his community.”

The award was presented to him at Vermont Children’s Hospital in a special ceremony that included members of the VTANG giving him a formal salute. The event was touching, said Amy.

“It brought tears to my eyes,” she said. “And not only were the members of the Vermont Air National Guard there, but his cardiologist, his pulmonologist, and all the nurses and staff we see at the Children’s Speciality Center in Fletcher Allen were there and they got cake for him. They made him feel special.”

As a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Amy said she was proud both of her son and of the VTANG for offering such encouragement for children through the Young Hero Award.

“I’m very proud that the Vermont Air National Guard has this award for deserving people,” said Amy. “As Christopher ’s mother, I’m just beaming. I know how hard he had to fight to survive this summer, and he completely deserves this award.”

Christopher has been doing “remarkably well” in recent weeks, said Amy. He returned to school in September, attending only halfdays and undergoing physical therapy three times a week. He finished physical therapy in October and started back to school full days in mid-October. Surgery he underwent during the summer ultimately stopped him from coughing up blood, though Amy noted doctors could not guarantee that wouldn’t happen again.

However, Amy and the rest of Christopher ’s family holds onto hope.

“We can just take things a day at a time and enjoy them,” she said.

Christmas Tea and Bazaar comes Dec. 4 PLATTSBURGH — There will be a Christmas Tea and Bazaar, Saturday, Dec. 4, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Plattsburgh First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, located on the corner of Brinkerhoff and Marian streets.

CCC faculty earns new credential PLATTSBURGH — Three faculty members from the Clinton Community College Human Services Department have received their Human ServicesBoard Certified Practitioner credential from the Center for Credentialing and Education.

Department chair Jennifer Waite and adjunct faculty Angela Doe and Judy Feigenbaum each received the new credential in September after completing the national exam in July.

According to the Council for Standards in Human Service Education Web site, the HSBCP credential was created in 2008 by the CCE with the assistance of the National Organization for Human Services in con-

sultation with the Council for Standards in Human Service Education. The credential process is designed for human services practitioners, including those holding technical certificates, associates, bachelor ’s and advanced degrees.

“This new credential will aid the human services field and its professionals in gaining professional recognition and status like other professions,” stated Waite, who referred to professions such as social work and counseling.

Waite said she hopes local agencies will seek employees that have the HS-BCP credential to ensure the human services field continues to prosper through education.

A team at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh received a trophy for winning third place at the Pumpkin Chuckin’ competition in Cambridge, Vt., Oct. 3. Taste of the North Country returns for 15th year PLATTSBURGH — It’s the time of year that Jody A. Parks looks forward to every year — the annual Taste of the North Country.

Parks, who serves as executive vice president for the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce — the organization which puts on the event — said there’s much in store for this year ’s Taste of the North Country, now in its 15th year.

“We’ve really got a lot going on this year,” said Parks. “We have quite a few new participants, which I think speaks for the event.”

Taste of the North Country centers around displays and samples from local restaurants and vendors, which continues to grow year after year, said Parks.

“The tasting is an opportunity to see what local restaurants and vendors have to offer,” she

“We have some cool things this year as always,” said Parks. “We have everything from gift certificates to restaurants to toys for children to gift baskets to vacations to boat rentals.

“Grace Realty is even donating the use of a condo in Florida,” said Parks, referring to a one-week stay at the Barefoot Beach Resort in Indian Shores, Fla. “That’s something we haven’t had before.”

However, Parks noted people shouldn’t be intimidated by the value of some of the highend items. Many items are valued in the $20 range, but even big-ticket ones can go for a steal.

“That’s why it’s a good place to get your holiday shopping started,” said Parks. “There really is something for everyone. “ Money raised from Taste of the North Country helps the chamber of commerce with its continued efforts of promoting and marketing the region, said Parks, which is another reason to attend the event.

Artists to be featured at Tip Top Frames Nov. 14 sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Photographer Shaun Heffernan and his wife drawer Amanda Palmer will feature their work at Tip Top Frames next Sunday, Nov. 14.

Heffernan and Palmer used to own a gallery on City Hall Place, but closed it down last year. This exhibit will be the first time since then Palmer has showcased her drawings.

“I have an art degree in print making and have been drawing since I can remember really,” said Palmer, who is also the director and curator of the Alice T. Miner Museum in Chazy. “I like to por-

tray the natural world, but I also do a lot of imagery from my imagination and dreams.”

Palmer said Heffernan will not only showcase some of his photographs, but will also be signing copies of the 2011 Self Realization Fellowship calendar he will be featured in.

“He’s wanted to get into it for years,” Palmer explained of the calendar. “It’s one that we used to sell at our store and he’s bought if every year for many years because it’s just amazing photographs in it.”

Heffernan, who has been “capturing imagery” since 1969, sent in dozens of photographs, and the organization chose his Bleeding

Hearts photograph, which will be featured in the 52-week calendar.

“I was completely elated,” Heffernan said. “It had been a goal of mine to submit imagery to these folks for consideration for several years and I finally carved out the time to do it.”

Heffernan said only 54 images are selected from more than 3.5 million submissions.

“I really view it as an honor and am humbled to be included,” he said. “There’s definitely some luck involved when there are that many photos for the editors to choose from, and I’ll happily accept that luck.

Heffernan’s photo, which he took in 2007 at Point au Roche, will

be paired with a quote by Guru Paramahansa Yogananda which states, “Love is harmony and harmony is love … Love is the highest, the grandest, the most inspiring, the most sublime principle in creation.”

The idea of for the exhibit and calendar signing came after a conversation amongst Heffernan and Tip Top Frames Gallery and Art Center owner Skip Sprague and Tea & Treasures owner Judith Bentham-Beckley.

“We wanted to partner with them first of all so we could spend a little time with them and also to bring people into their gallery,” Palmer explained. “They’re such wonderful people and they have

such a great supportive attitude towards artists.”

Bentham-Beckley will be serving freshly-brewed tea and items from her store at the event. Prints of Palmer and Heffernan’s works will be available and Sprague will be available for people who want to

Eyecare for the Adirondacks, Theresa Guynup honored

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — The Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women’s Club has named its honorees for Employer of the Year and Business Woman of the Year.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks and Theresa Guynup were given the recognition, respectively, during a ceremony at Cricket’s Restaurant Oct. 26.

Eyecare for the Adirondacks — with offices in Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Malone — was nominated by Betsy Morrow, Morrisonville, who is a business teacher at CV-Tec. In her nomination, Morrow stated she has observed the growth of Eyecare for the Adirondacks facilities and staff “for years” and credited the business for promoting employees from within, several of which being Morrow’s former students.

“They have always been very supportive of my student interns and have hired many of them,” said Morrow. “They regularly crosstrain their employees to learn all of the phases of the eye care industry.”

Morrow further stated the team at Eyecare for the Adirondacks is regularly involved in the community, including Dr. Kjell Dahlen.

“Dr. Dahlen has been very involved with the Mayor ’s Cup sailing regatta as well as an auction for charity that the staff and patients do every fall,” said Morrow.

The number of providers has at least tripled since I have been placing students there,” said Morrow. “With all of this growth, their employees have grown professionally with them ... I am not sure why Eyecare for the Adirondacks has not been recognized before, but they seem to be overdue.”

Faye Martineau, administrator of Eye Care for the Adirondacks, accepted the award on behalf of the business, sharing she thought the timing was coincidental with a recent prediction she was given.

“I was at lunch last Wednesday and happened to read my horoscope which stated that good things will happen in your business world today,” she recalled. “When I get back from lunch, I had a phone call from Betsy Morrow informing me [Eye Care for the Adirondacks] had won this award.”

Martineau said she and her fellow employees are proud of the success stories they’ve had over the years with patients, whom they place as their “top priority.”

“We would be nothing without the community which supports us,” she said.

Theresa Guynup was equally as grateful upon receiving her recognition as Business Woman of the Year. Guynup, who serves as a service coordinator supervisor for Residential Resources in Peru, was nominated by her fellow employees for exceeding expectations of her in her day-to-day job performance.

Guynup credited her strong work ethic to her mother, 95-year-old Claudette Schofield of Peru, who was unable to attend the award presentation.

“She was a working woman herself, serving as a nurse in the Army during World War II,” said Guynup. “She had a very strong, long career. She was my role model and my hero.

She taught me what it is to be a working wife and mother.”

When it comes to being a success in her own career, Guynup said it was due to a combination of a supportive work environment and home environment.

“I’m really blessed that I have both,” said Guynup.

PLATTSBURGH — There's a new airline service coming to Plattsburgh International Airport.

Spirit Airlines was announced as the newest service for the airport during a press conference Oct. 28. Spirit Airlines will begin nonstop service from Plattsburgh to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., beginning Friday, Jan. 14, 2011. Nonstop service to Myrtle Beach, S.C., is expected to begin Sunday, May 15.

Garry F. Douglas, president of the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, said Spirit Airlines was attracted to the growing number of people flying in and out of Plattsburgh International, which is expected to reach 85,000 to 90,000 people this year. Approximately 85 percent of those flying from Plattsburgh are from Canada.

"Those are the numbers that are bringing us the services we have and the services we will have in the future," said Douglas.

Clinton County Legislator Robert J. Heins, chairman of the Clinton County Legislature's airport committee, said given the airport was redeveloped from former U.S. Air Force properties nearly three years ago, the transformation in such a short time has been impressive.

"That’s truly an amazing scenario in just three years," said Heins.

"We’re spiraling upward. It’s truly exciting."

The decision to bring air service to Plattsburgh was one that has been in the works for the past two years, said Bobby Schroeter, senior director of consumer market for Spirit Airlines. Schroeter confirmed it was the high demand for vacation destinations like the Dominican Republic, Cancun, and Jamaica — which Plattsburgh's Spirit Airlines flights will connect to — that demonstrated the need here, he said.

"We looked at a lot of different things, but everybody here has been clamoring for the Caribbean and low fares. It made sense for us," said

Schroeter. "We’re really excited to get [service] going here ... and get some low-cost fares to everybody in the area. I know there’s going to be a lot of demand for this."

"This finally puts the 'International' in Plattsburgh International Airport," said Douglas. "And, it’s still just the beginning of the possibilities that will unfold here at Plattsburgh International Airport."

The idea behind integrating on-line ordering into the indoor market, said Spaugh, is to reduce waste.

“That way, if a vendor is baking, they know just how much to bake and not baking things that won’t sell,” said Spaugh. “If I’m harvesting salad mix, I know just how much to harvest and I’m not harvesting more than I need one week and not having enough the next week.”

“It’s wonderful, from a business management standpoint,” she added.

Even though the market is designed in a made to order fashion, Spaugh said there will likely still be goods available for those who haven’t ordered in advance.

“The first two weeks, we’ll have it set up like a regular farmers market, so that people can touch and feel and see and taste. And, some of our vendors will still do that on a regular basis,” said Spaugh. “Some of them feel they generate sales if people can sample their products.”

The benefits aren’t only for the producers and vendors, said Spaugh. Consumers will also benefit from the ease of on-line ordering and in knowing they’re receiving locally-produced items that are literally hand-picked for them.

“The person who does the primary grocery shopping can sit at home and look at the list and make their decisions about what they want to order and then if someone else in the household or a neighbor is more convenient to the Oval, that person can just take the payment and pick up their order,” said Spaugh, who noted that would be of added convenience for people who travel from farther locations like Au Sable Forks and Jay to the south and Chazy and Chateaugay to the north.

“And, with having it on a Thursday, if you forget something or you find you need something else, you still have Friday to get it,” noted Spaugh.

The whole business model for on-line ordering isn’t something Spaugh is unfamiliar with, she said. Last year, she tested the waters using her business and found on-line ordering was convenient for many people.

“We had 10-12 orders a week,” said Spaugh.

“People were enthusiastic.”

Sam Hendren, owner of Clover Mead Farm in Chesterfield, said he’s looking forward to participating in the market, which already has several vendors lined up from northern Essex County to Franklin County and places in between.

In the absence of a local year-round farmers market, Hendren said he’s been traveling more than 100 miles south — one way — to sell his cheeses and other goods at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market.

“In the winter, I drive two and a half hours one way because there are no options up here besides my wholesale accounts, which aren’t enough,” admitted Hendren. “Downstate, a lot of the summer markets have gone to year-round. It’s something that we have to move to up here also if we’re going to expect small farmers like us to be able to survive.”

“I think we have to develop winter markets and this is an interest attempt to do that,” he added.

The Thursday market Spaugh is establishing could be a stepping stone to that, however, that ultimately depends on the reception it receives, she said.

“Right now, the market is just planned for the fall,” said Spaugh.

The indoor farmers market will begin Nov. 18 and run Thursdays through Dec. 23. The exception will be the week of Thanksgiving, when the market will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 24. Online orders may be placed at www.plattsburgh.locallygrown.net.
