SARANAC — As winter is quickly approaching, the New Land Trust is preparing for its most popular season.

On Oct. 24, four Boy Scout troops and the Saranac Key Club helped clean up the trails at the NLT to prepare for the skiers and snowshoers who will soon arrive.

NLT board member and retired Boy Scout troop leader Steve Jenks said this was the second year the Boy Scouts came to help, with nearly 75 boys and leaders from the West Plattsburgh, Beekmantown, Champlain and Saranac troops.

Information obtained shows Dave has not been forthcoming about his personal background. In 2003, he was investigated for stealing an expensive stereo from a car that was seized by another agency and ultimately pressed into service by the department. The officer who filed a written complaint with D.A. was fired. In 1979, the future D.A.R.E. officer, Dave Favro, was found by his coaches at MAI in possession of and using illegal drugs. He was given the opportunity to save the team by “owning up”. He refused, and the team was disqualified, and forfeited all remaining games for the balance of the season.

Take a close look at the letters of support for the incumbent sheriff notice that they are penned, almost exclusively, by individuals who have a big stake, financially or politically in Favro’s political prize. It is also noteworthy that these are the usual suspects, the cronies that have been controlling our lives for decades deciding who gets hired/fired, who gets grant money, who’s kid gets a summer job, who’s wife gets a no show government position, who gets there tickets fixed and most importantly how to use their positions (across party lines) to keep each other in power. He can plaster his face on the flag and his cronies can pretend they’re talking to children but this time it isn’t selling.

An Open Letter to the Residents of Clinton County My name is Terry Guynup. I am the Republican Candidate for Clinton County Sheriff.

Like many of us outside the ‘politosphere’, I am fed up with the way incumbents are abusing the power we have entrusted to them while grossly misappropriating our tax dollars. These are times of great fiscal challenges for our nation, our state and our county. The taxpayers of Clinton County are entitled to the most able, efficient, accountable, and ethical management of our leading public safety agency, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office. It’s high time you get what you are paying for.

I am confident that I have the skills and experience to do this job and I assure you I have the desire. I have over 12 years of experience with the department. I have been promoted through the ranks from entry level guard to Lieutenant with an unblemished record.

This campaign should not be about politics. I see it as a job application. If the citizens of Clinton County ‘hire’ me to run the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, I will restore the morale of the men and women who serve the department and return it to its traditional mission in the community.

The civil division should be receptive too and able to service the

needs of the citizens and businesses within the county. This should be accomplished using the patrol division to serve summonses, collect on bad checks, and oversee the orderly transfer of property for landlords and tenants. All these basic functions should be provided without additional ‘fees’ (your tax dollars already pay for these services) while at the same time conducting routine investigations and responding to emergency calls. I will not allocate valuable personnel to nuisance road checks for equipment violations to raise money for the state.

The mission of the jail is very straightforward. Our department has the obligation to safely transport and house prisoners both before and after their day in court and, first and foremost, to see to it that they do not escape or pose a threat to the citizens. We are fortunate to have a brand new facility and competent personal to accomplish this, and also to be able to deliver substantial revenue from other agencies to cut costs to tax payers. We can accomplish all of this without waterboarding or unnecessary strip searching and we can avoid the sex scandals that have occurred under the incumbent’s administration through proper, professional, and ethical leadership.

I will, immediately upon taking office, call for a comptroller’s audit of the department’s finances as well as all seized assets.

Trick-or-Treat on Safety Street, PHO Halloween Festival return PLATTSBURGH — Two familiar and family-friendly Halloween events will return this year.

The City of Plattsburgh, WPTZ News Channel 5, and Latremore’s Insurance Agency will present the seventh annual “Trick-or-Treat on Safety Street” at the Crete Memorial Civic Center Friday, Oct. 29. The civic center will be open from 6-8 p.m., with children able to trick or treat from “house to house.”

“We are always excited to put this event on,” said Steve Peters, superintendent of the city recreation department. “Our staff really gets into it and makes it fun. With the overwhelming support from area businesses and thousands of children dressed up in costumes, it’s definitely an event that should not be missed.”

Individuals and businesses have the opportunity to sponsor a “home” on Safety Street and showcase their businesses to thousands of local children accompanied by their parents.

In exchange for sponsorship, houses will be constructed, painted and decorated by the recreation department. Each house will have prominently displayed signs advertising “the owner” of the house. There is limited space

available, so businesses are encouraged to reserve their houses as quickly as possible.

Plattsburgh Housing Outlet, 690 State Route 3, will host its 11th annual Halloween Festival Saturday, Oct. 30, from 1-4 p.m.

Children ages 12 and younger are encouraged to come in costume to the event. Model homes displayed ina community setting, will be open, allowing children to trick or treat in a controlled and safe environment.

Local businesses and civic organization have sponsored individual homes and will staff the homes, handing out candy or treats during the event.

Children will be entertained by magician Ishkabibble next door inside Della Honda at 2 p.m. There will be arts and crafts, a raffle and 25-cent games. Participants can bob for apples and enjoy cider and doughnuts.

The Adirondack Safe Kids Coalition will be back supporting the event, providing families with Halloween safety advice and offering car seat checks. The District No. 3 Volunteer Fire Department will have a fire truck on display

and also offer fire safety advice. The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department will also be on hand offering child fingerprinting and ID service.

Parking will be available on site as well as at Della Honda, where the car seat check will take place.

Plattsburgh Housing Outlet will again contribute all proceeds from the festival to the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington, Vt. Since the festival started, Plattsburgh Housing Outlet has raised more than $33,000 for the charity. Statistics show more than 70 percent of the families using their Burlington facility

The story of modern GPS Medicare prescription plans

I

spent a lot of time on the pond from the middle 70s through retirement in 1994; the pond being the Atlantic Ocean. The amazing thing to me was how we never got lost and after 10 to 12 hours of flight we’d be fairly close to where we should be.

The system we relied on was called the inertial navigation system.

It wasn’t my area of expertise but I understood the basics of how it mixed velocities with time and kept track of our position. The problem with the system was drift; with farther distances came more drift which meant a less accurate position and explains what I mean by “fairly close.”

Today we have satellite-based global positioning systems. The history of modern day GPS has its roots with a local man, Roger Easton, who grew up in nearby Craftsbury, Vt., graduated from Middlebury College, and landed at the Naval Research Laboratory.

He earned a commission and spent a few years as a Naval Officer performing research on landing systems. Afterwards, as a physicist, he spent time on

various projects until contributing to one called Project Vanguard, which involved designing an orbiting satellite and a system to track the satellite.

Out of the Vanguard Project came the development of TIMATION (an acronym from TIMed navigATION), which is the system modern GPS is based on.

In March of this year, Easton was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for the development of TIMATION. Beyond being the father of GPS, as Easton is sometimes called, his other work brought the U.S. the world’s first system capable of tracking any orbiting object.

GPS is ubiquitous today. Along with everyone else who uses the technology are those crossing the pond with a lot more accuracy than we had.

o I need to review my Medicare prescription drug plan choice every year?

According to www.medicareinteractive.org, it is very important you review your drug plan every year.

Medicare private drug plans can change their costs and the list of drugs they cover every year.

Most people can only change Medicare drug plans during fall open enrollment (sometimes called the Annual Coordinated Election Period — ACEP), which runs from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. (Note: Beginning in October 2011, fall open enrollment will start earlier and end earlier. Fall open enrollment in 2011 and beyond will be from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Changes made during fall open enrollment will still become effective Jan. 1.

You may also be able to change your Part D plan during the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP) if you have a Medicare private health plan. The MADP will occur every year starting in 2011, from Jan. 1 to Feb. 14. If you have a Medicare private health plan (also known as a Medicare Advantage plan) you will be able to switch to Original Medicare with or without a stand-alone prescription drug plan.

Changes made during this period will become effective the first of following month. For example, if you switched from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare and a stand-alone prescription drug plan in February, your new coverage would begin March 1.

Even if you are satisfied with your current plan, you should check if there is another plan in your area that offers better coverage at a lower price.

When choosing a Medicare private drug plan, make sure to look at all the costs, not just the premium.

Your costs throughout the year will depend on what drugs you take, whether your plan covers them, and whether there are any coverage restrictions. Another plan may have lower copays, cover more of your drugs, have fewer restrictions or offer some coverage during the coverage gap.

If you are considering joining a Medicare private health plan, also known as Medicare Advantage plan, to get drug coverage (like an HMO or PPO), remember you will get all of your Medicare benefits from that plan. Look beyond the drug coverage; make sure the plan covers you to go to the doctors, hospitals and pharmacies you prefer to use at a cost you can afford.

Flint is a large male Australian shepherd mix who is a working dog. Flint needs a job to keep him busy. He is in dire need of a real home with folks who will keep him occupied and happy. Flint will do best in a household with female dogs or as the only dog child.

Election Day and what lies ahead the day after F

rom many indications a great deal within our own community hangs on the outcomes of next week’s local, state and federal elections. I’ve been in business world for more than 35 years in retail management, organizational management (chamber of commerce and economic development) and community newspapers. In all that time I’ve never seen people this pessimistic about our future as they appear now during this economic downturn. For years nothing could compare to the Great Depression, so we were told by those who lived through that time period. If the upcoming election cycle doesn’t signal a new direction and we continue down the path we are on I must admit I am very worried about what lies ahead.

In a recent article regarding the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce’ s small business survey, 50 percent of the responders believe our economy is stagnant while another 30 percent believe it is getting worse. Those numbers are about as pessimistic or negative as I’ve ever seen. It’s always been an unwritten rule in business that unless you’ve already announced you were going out of business, you always put a positive, optimistic foot forward. Small business owners make up more than 50 percent of the

employment in the country and create more jobs than any other entity, including government, and they deliver more tax revenue to communities than all the big boxes stores combined.

These are people who by their very nature defy the odds every day by remaining in business and risk — everything they achieved with each decision may be it small and large.

As a people we’ve always been taught to be optimistic.

Positive things happen to positive people, but sooner or later you need to be realistic and face the challenges that simply won’t go away with a smile and good wishes.

When 80 percent of these optimistic small business owners feel our economy is stagnant or getting worse somebody needs to change that climate and change it fast.

Publishing community newspapers in 10 New York counties and two Vermont counties serving more than 4,000 active customers gives us a pretty good picture of the spending habits of local, regional and national businesses. In some of the communities we serve we’ve seen a definite tightening up of the advertising dollars, driven by a lack consumer

spending. In other markets we’ve seen an up tick in promotional spending, which speaks highly of the business community and the consumers in those communities supporting their local businesses.

The bottom line is this, until people feel optimistic about their future, be it a consumer or a business owner, the dollars will not be flowing evenly throughout our community. People will be looking to save every penny they can and way they can. This unfortunately leads some folks to think the best deals are on-line outside the local community. Maybe one can save a few bucks shopping out of the area by searching for the specific product the world over, but what happens when your neighbor or family member who worked at the store you used to patronize is no longer employed and the business where they worked is no longer open? Those are local dollars and local taxes that won’t be moving within our community, meaning fewer people to support local government and more folks on unemployment and welfare requiring an already over-

The Native Americans introduced pumpkin to the early European settlers. At that time, the Native Americans roasted pumpkins to eat, used the seeds as both a food source and medicine, and dried strips of pumpkin to be woven into mats.

According to history, the European settlers created the first pumpkin pie by filling the inside of a hallowed pumpkin with milk, spices, and honey. The pumpkin was then roasted in the hot ashes of a fire.

Placing the custard mixture into a crust did not happen for many years after as the pumpkin remained the pie’s crust throughout early colonial times.

While now is the time to harvest and enjoy pumpkins, they are very tender plants with a long growing season. They require about 100 frost-free growing days. To grow a pumpkin, the seeds must be planted in early June. Pumpkins grow on large vines and require quite a bit of space with the minimum spacing being 50 square feet per hill. Each hill should have four or five seeds planted at a depth of 1 inch. Once the young plants are established, each hill is thinned to two to three vigorous pumpkin seedlings.

Pumpkins are shallow rooted, heavy feeding plants. Plants can be fed with traditional fertilizers or with organic manures. Watering is best done with a drip irrigation system since powdery mildew, the pumpkin’s most common disease problem, is spread through wet foliage.

Novice pumpkin growers might initially be concerned when they notice not every flower produces a pumpkin.

Pumpkins, and all other squashes, produce separate male and female flowers. The first flowers are almost always male.

The pollen on these first male flowers attracts bees and alerts them to the location of the blooming vines. By the time the first female blossoms open, the bees’ route is well established and the male flowers’ pollen is transferred to the female flowers by the bees. Male flowers bloom for one day, then drop off the plants. The male flowers may predominate under certain conditions, especially early in the season, or under certain kinds of stress. The small fruits, visible at the bases of the female flowers, identify them. There is no swelling on the bases of the male flower stems.

Besides eating the pumpkins, the most common use of pumpkins is for jack-o-lanterns. If you did not grow your own pumpkin this year, there are still plenty to be found at area u-pick pumpkin patches, orchards, and road-side stands. While growing your own pumpkin is fun, nothing beats a wagon ride to the pumpkin patch!

Our local economy, both the public and private sectors, depends on optimism and optimism starts right at home. So who is the somebody that needs to change the local climate?

Just look into the mirror because that somebody is all of us. If we value the strength of our local community where we all have a vested interest then it’s up to us and our elected leaders to make the difference. Our economy just won’t function with a passive population.

We need to be engaged and active. No one is going to come in and fix what is ours.

We are all looking for a sign that something is changing for the better. Lets begin by getting out to the polls Nov. 2, and vote for the candidates you feel most qualified to address these problems. Let’s take a more active role with their decisions to insure they encourage job growth, especially in the private sector and let’s all do our part to support the local economy that ultimately supports all of us and provides our quality of life.

Bloodsport without spilling one drop dressing, no dragging and no blood on their hands. Television producers have finally figured out how to take the blood out of “blood sports,” while retaining the thrill of the hunt.

And they are banking the public will show interest!

The newly-minted, made-for-TV, Whitetail Pro Series is a big game hunting competition which will require hunters to “shoot” up to 15 deer over the course of three days of competition.

Hunters will be scored based on what the judges see in their video after the hunt.

Shot placement will be a major component of the hunter’s score. All hunters will be using shotguns retrofitted with hitech, video rifle scopes and they will be firing blanks. It will all be accomplished with the correct political correctness of our time. Not a drop of blood will be shed and producers will no longer need the disclaimer, “No animals were injured in the making of this video.”

Competitive hunters will hunt with shotguns fitted with an Elcan DigitalHunter, a $1,200 rifle scope-video

recorder combo manufactured by Raytheon. The video sequence, initiated when the hammer or firing pin strikes the primer of the blank shell, will record the exact scene hunters see in the crosshairs as they aim and fire.

SmartScope, and Shot Cam are the names of two similar rifle scopes that have the ability to digitally capture the hunt. Invented by Terry Gordon, these scopes have been used for many years for law enforcement and military applications. They are produced locally in Keeseville at Adirondack Optic.

The competition for the title of America’s best whitetail hunter, will be under the direction of the American Whitetail Authority. The hunts are tentatively scheduled to be broadcast this winter in 13 episodes on the Outdoor Channel.

Hunters in each preliminary round will be allowed two days of scouting the hunting area, to be followed by three full days of hunting. They will be allowed only five shots a day. The intensity of being in the field for five full days is a major part of

the test.

“Anybody can luck into a big buck on a single-day hunt,” explained organizers.

“But this contest is designed to honor the guys who can consistently get close to mature whitetails — one of the toughest tests for a hunter.

Shooting sports have lost a bullet A decision that may have global ramifications on the future of competition shooting was quietly announced with the news the 2012 London Olympics will now utilize laser guns instead of air pistols for the modern pentathlon event.

President Klaus Schormann of the Union International de Pentathlon Moderne , the governing body of the sport, explained the decision with this comment, “We can hold competitions in parks and even shooting malls,” Schormann wrote.

“Safety issues will no longer be a big concern.”

According to shooting sports industry reports, both the United States of America Shooting and International Shooting Sports Federation frowned at the proposed change.

Their concerns are easy to understand.

Utilizing a laser gun will remove external conditions and shooting elements such as pistol and pellet accuracy and make shooting “into an arcade game.”

Shooting industry professionals view the decision as a possible threat to shooting, moving it away from what is considered a “shooting sport” and making it more acceptable on a worldwide basis. It appears the possibility of political correctness may have influenced the decision makers to change from a pistol that fires an actual projectile, to one that flashes a beam of light.

A comment on the change posted on the Outdoor Wire reveals some of the shooting sports’ industry’s chagrin.

“Unbelievable! I suppose the downhill in the Winter Olympics will be done with Wii. No broken bones, and much easier to practice without all that inconveniently cold snow, old chap! Sign me up for air fencing.”

ooner or later, it was bound to happen. Just as the annual Big Game Season has begun to heat up across the Adirondacks, the announcement arrived. Modern technology has done it again! Hunters will now have the same opportunities bass anglers have long enjoyed. They will have a chance to participate in “catch and release” hunting.

Catch and release angling, which was initially developed as a conservation initiative to protect the species from competitive events, eventually spawned the highly-successful, multi-million dollar Professional Bass Anglers circuit. Today, competitive bass angling is a standalone industry.

It was only a matter of time before a new, cleaner, safer and more exciting outdoor competition was invented to grace our television screens. However, instead of Bubba and the good ol’ boys busting up on some big ol’ bass, they’ll be bursting through the cover to blast a big racked buck, live on TV. However, after taking the kill shot, these modern day competitive hunters will happily walk away, as the bucks bound off into the distance in a culturally acceptable and environmentally friendly manner.

November is National Hospice Month

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The month of November is recognized as National Hospice Month, a time of year set aside to honor those who provide end-of-life care to those in need.

The mission of organizations like Hospice of the North Country, which serves Clinton and northern Franklin counties, is important to people like Harriet Taylor of West Chazy.

Taylor began volunteering for Hospice of the North Country about five years ago, driven by a desire to help others and because of her own losses. In 2004, she lost her husband, Jerome, one month shy of their 53rd wedding anniversary. The following year, her older sister, Gladys, passed away

and, in 2005, she lost her younger sister, Grace.

“The three people I was closest to were gone,” said Taylor.

Rather than filling her days lamenting the loss of her loved ones, Taylor began volunteering for Hospice prior to the loss of her sister, Grace, who was also helped by Hospice.

“I was lonely,” admitted Taylor. “But, I said I couldn’t sit around and fret. So, I joined Hospice.”

Knowing what people go through when losing a family member, Taylor said she was motivated to provide families relief by spending time with their loved one. And, at the same time, her visits served the purpose of brightening the life of the person receiving Hospice care.

“I like people and I love to hear them talk. It’s company for me as

well as it is for them,” said Taylor, who also spends one day a week volunteering as a clerk at Transitions, a store in downtown Plattsburgh which raises money for Hospice programs. “I just want to help.”

The people whose lives Taylor has touched in her years as a Hospice volunteer have stayed with her. One that comes instantly to mind was a retired schoolteacher who suffered from Alzheimer ’s disease.

“When you would ask her what she had for lunch, she couldn’t remember,” recalled Taylor. “But, if you mentioned something about traveling, which is something she did every summer, or if you mentioned anything about her family, she loved to talk about her brothers and sisters. I would just sit there and keep her company and let her talk for hours.”

Even today, a Hospice patient she visits with has meant a great deal to her, said Taylor.

“She’s teaching me how to play Scrabble,” said Taylor. “She’s a delight. I thoroughly enjoy being with her.”

When spending time with a person under Hospice care, many might think the person facing the end of their life is the one who benefits most from their time with a volunteer, said Taylor.

However, she finds the opposite to be true.

“Being a volunteer is something you get a lot more out of than you’ll ever give,” she said.

How to break out of an exercising plateau H

as your weight loss stalled or have you stopped seeing results with your regular exercise plan? It may be time to reconsider your exercise routine and nutrition. Here are some tips that may help push you forward.

Change up your workout routine. Lift heavier weights. (Yes, even women!) You will increase your muscle mass which in turn will raise your metabolism to burn more fat on a daily basis. Remember ladies, you will not get bulky from lifting heavier weights. Women simply do not have the hormones to build big manly muscles. You may also try adding in some interval training opposed to slow steady state cardio.

Contrary to what many people believe, doing hours and hours of slow boring cardio will not get you the best results and may even make it harder for you to lose those last couple of pounds. Adding intervals will boost

your fat loss and increase the “after burn” for hours longer than steady state cardio.

Keep your interval training sessions short (no longer than 30 minutes including the warm up and cool down).

Use the RPE Scale (rate of perceived exertion) with being really easy and 10 being ready to puke. For a simple interval workout, start off with a 5 minute warm up at a level 3, go to a level 8 for 30 to 60 seconds, then back to a 3 for 60 to 120 seconds. Repeat five to eight times and cool down for 5 minutes. (Interval workouts are not for everyone, please be sure to talk to a certified fitness professional or doctor if you are not sure if interval training is right for you).

The next thing you should consider is your nutrition. I tell all of my clients what you put into your body is 80 percent of the results you are going to see. You can exercise until you are ready to fall over every day, but if you are not eating a healthy diet with real food (hint: if it comes in a container, it is not real!) you are not going to see the results you are looking for. So take a couple of days and write down everything you are eating and be honest because you will only be cheating yourself. Record water, drinks, and portion sizes of everything. That morning latte, afternoon candy bar, or late night dessert can really add up. Make a commitment to remove all the “junk” from your diet. Do this for few

weeks and record what you see and how you feel.

These tips are simple and really easy to implement to your lifestyle. You can try them all at once or add one at a time. Do what works for you at a pace you are ready for. I love to hear about your success so let me know how this works for you if you try it.

Middle school continues tradition of Students of the Month

Every month teachers nominate students to be a potential Student of the Month. For this school year, three students have already been chosen to represent the month of September — sixth grader Samantha Stokes, seventh grader Shawn Vancour, and eighth grader Paris Blaise. “[The] student may be very helpful in class with other students. Always completes their homework.

Brandell, who makes the final decision on which students will be chosen said most of the work is done

by Harley who has been organizing the program almost since it began.

“I just organize everything and just dump the results on his desk,” laughed Harley. “There’s no real strict criteria to the decision making, which makes it very flexible and open and allows him to select quite a range of students.”

In terms of organizing, Harley reminds teachers every month to submit any nominations they may have.

Once the decision is made, he takes the photos of each student and posts

them on a bulletin board in front of the main office for all to see. The photos are also posted on the school’s Web site.

“Our students are our customers,” said Brandell. “And w want to recognize our best customers. Anything we can do to recognize and make them proud to be good students, that’s what we want to do.”

“It’s really also a nice pat on the back for the parents,” added Harley.

“The parents should take pride in this. It isn’t always a direct connection, but good kids reflect good parenting.”

Combat veteran assumes command of locally-based National Guard company cers Training Corps scholarship awarded through the Army’s “Green to Gold” program, which allows enlisted soldiers to earn an ROTC commission.

Minning graduated and was commissioned in 2003 and joined the New York Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry as platoon leader in 2004, reporting directly to Fort Hood, Tx., where the unit was mobilizing. He served in Iraq for a year with the 1st Battalion 69th Infantry. During this period, the battalion was charged with securing the road between downtown Baghdad and the airport to end a spate of terrorist attacks on the route.

Clinton County Court sentencings announced

PLATTSBURGH — The following sentencings, furnished by the Clinton County District Attorney's office, were recently recorded in Clinton County Court.

Harold Hosten, 28, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary. Hosten was sentenced to 1-3 years in jail and ordered to pay restitution and surcharges.

Robert Gomez, 46, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Gomez was sentenced to one year in year jail on each count to run concurrently. He was further ordered to pay restitution, provide a DNA sample and pay associated fees.

Timothy Taylor, 20, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny. Taylor was sentenced to six months in jail, five years probation and to perform 100 hours community service. He was further ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated surcharges and fees.

April Wright, 32, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to two counts of fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Wright was sentenced to two years in prison and one year post-release supervision. She was further ordered to pay restitution and a surcharge.

Karim Lane, 25, Plattsburgh, pleaded guilty to two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of marijuana, and no seatbelt.

Lane was sentenced to eight years in prison and three years post-release supervision. Lane was further ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated fees and surcharges.

Gary Gambadora, 64, Saranac, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment. He was ordered to pay restitution.

Nathan Gilmore, 24, Merrill, pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sale of marijuana. Gilmore was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to undergo alcohol treatment. He was further ordered to pay a surcharge.

Joshua Annis, 22, Keeseville, pleaded guilty to first-degree sex abuse. Annis was sentenced to two years in prison and five years post-release

supervision. A stay away order of protection was issued against him and he was further ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated fees and surcharges.

Livingston Hatch Jr., 45, Elizabethtown, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Hatch was sentenced to County Drug Court and a stay away order of protection was issued against him. He was further ordered to pay associated surcharges and fees.

Philip Thompson, 26, Ghana, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. Thompson was sentenced to time served and ordered to provide a DNA sample and pay associated surcharges and fees.

Taste of Home Cooking School makes its way to Plattsburgh

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The people of the North Country will soon have an opportunity to get a first-rate education in the world of culinary arts.

Denton Publications and other fine sponsors will bring the Taste of Home Cooking School to the Crete Civic Center Saturday, Nov. 6, giving people an opportunity to learn helpful tips and techniques through informative cooking demonstrations.

The event is one New Market Press, a sister corporation of Denton Publications based in Vermont, has been doing for the past five years, said associate publisher Ed Coats. This year, Coats said he was interested in bringing it to this side of Lake Champlain.

“We’ve always had such a strong interest in Taste of Home from people in the North Country,” said Coats. “So, we decided we’d bring it to the Crete this year to give the folks here a little less of a drive.”

The event will center around demonstrations from Taste of Home culinary specialist Michael Barna, who has conducted Taste of Home shows throughout New York, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey. According to the Taste of Home Web site, Barna has an extensive background in the culinary world.

When only 13 years old, Barna obtained a position washing dishes at a local retirement facility, learning the value of hard work and developing his enthusiasm for food and entertaining. His passion for food and entertaining continued as he earned an associate’s degree in occupational studies from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Upon

graduation from the institute, Barna headed to Atlantic City were he was a member of various kitchen brigades, opening three gourmet casino restaurants at Resorts International, Trump Plaza and Trump Marina properties.

Barna eventually moved to the Philadelphia area where he accepted the position of executive sous chef at the prestigious 5 Diamond 4 Star Rittenhouse Hotel. He later became executive chef for Dean & Deluca’s Café Bistro division, managing their three Philadelphia locations.

In addition to being a culinary special for Taste of Home Cooking Schools, Barna’s background also includes facilitating private and Web site cooking classes, conducting local and national television commercials, and competing in national recipe contests.

“We’re excited to have Michael as our featured chef this year,” said Coats. “I’m very impressed with what I’ve read about him and if he’s as good as last year ’s chef, people are in for a treat.”

Taste of Home will also feature booths hosted by more than 40 local vendors, featuring everything from cooking utensils, home furnishings, candy makers and more, said Coats.

“We’ve got a lot of great local businesses and representatives from national companies, too, who are on board with this event,” said Coats. “We’ve had people jumping at the chance to be a part of this and I’m positive that’s because they know how big this is going to be. It’s unbelievable.”

The enthusiasm hasn’t stopped with just the vendors, added Coats.

“We’ve been selling tickets left and right for this,” he said. “I knew it would be a hit, but I didn’t know it would be such a hit so fast.”

With only days left until the event, tickets are selling fast, said Coats. The cost of admission is $13, with VIP passes available for $40.

VIP passes give attendees an autographed Taste of Home cookbook, meet and greet with Barna and guaranteed front-row seating.

“There may be some tickets available at the door, but I wouldn’t wait until then,” noted Coats. “Last year ’s show sold out.”

Doors will open for the event at 11 a.m., with the show to begin at 2 p.m. Attendees get free goodie bags. Door prizes will be awarded.

Tickets may be purchased at Price Chopper in Plattsburgh, Champlain and Lake Placid.

Tickets are also available at Wilson’s Appliance Center in Plattsburgh and the Plattsburgh office of Denton Publications. VIP passes are available only at Denton Publications.

Chazy Class Day earns TAUNY recognition

Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAZY — Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, a nonprofit organization “dedicated to documenting, preserving and promoting the traditional folk arts and folklore of New York’s North Country,” has honored Chazy Central Rural School with its highly-coveted North Country Heritage Award.

The award given by the Canton-based organization recognizes “individuals, families, or community groups who have mastered traditional arts or customs identified with our region and remain committed to passing them onto future generations.”

TAUNY executive director Varick Chittenden said Chazy Central was chosen for the award for its annual Class Day, a celebration which marks the completion of students’ high school careers.

What makes the event so special, said Chittenden, is the fact it’s been held in virtually the same format for 91 years. Class Day centers around senior students planting a tree in marking their milestone and reminiscing about their time at Chazy Central during a ceremony in which the boys dress in suits or tuxedos and girls dress in white dresses.

“It’s very fascinating. When I heard about it, I was truly convinced it met the criteria we were looking for,” said Chittenden. “Which is something, generally speaking, that is a community event. And, the community of Chazy has long been behind this.”

District superintendent and high school principal Jon Fairchild agreed. As a 1997 CCRS graduate, Fairchild recalls participating in his own Class Day. “It was a wonderful opportunity to say goodbye to the school and transition to what was next,” said Fairchild. “It’s a highly emotional day because it’s one of the last chances for the class to be together as a group.”

Class Day holds a special place in the hearts of students, said Fairchild, both in seniors experiencing it and in younger students witnessing it and looking forward to their own Class Day. “If I gave a student a choice between going to graduation and getting their diploma or being involved with Class Day, they’d take Class Day every single time,” said Fairchild.

That doesn’t surprise people like David Martin, a retired CCRS English teacher. Martin worked for the school district for 33 years and in that time was the senior class advisor. The advisor ’s role in Class Day has always been to assist students, as students are the ones who over-

see planning of the event. What he witnessed during his teaching career was an “extraordinarily important event” to students.

“I think Class Day is almost as important as graduation at Chazy,” said Martin, agreeing with Fairchild. “And, I think it’s helped people have a very strong bond with the school, with each other. It gives Chazy a sense of community, I think.”

In a world where things often change and time is precious, Martin said he’s glad to see Class Day is a tradition that’s stood the test of time.

“It certainly gratifies me to see something like this carry on. When you stop and think about it, this has gone on through two World Wars, the Depression, and all the turmoil of the past few years,” said Martin. “This is kind of a stabilizing influence for everybody.”

The recognition by TAUNY validates what Fairchild has long believed about the Chazy school district.

“It definitely tells us that the things we’re doing here are important and that people notice them,” he said.

“I’d love to see other schools jump on it for their schools. I’d love to see the stands full of all the different colors,” he added.

CHAZY — If you plan on attending a Chazy Central Rural School soccer game, the school’s yearbook club has found an easier way to bring your green and white.

Yearbook advisor Steve Patnode explained the club is now selling soccer scarves to help ease the cost of the yearbook. The idea came from 2008 CCRS graduate Gaelan Trombley, who is now the boys varsity assistant coach.

“He’s helped me a lot with the yearbook and when we were working on it I think the end of last year and looking for fundraising ideas, he said ‘Have you ever thought about soccer scarves?’” explained Patnode. “I think it came to his mind because of the World Cup that was taking

“We’re always looking at ways to raise money to pay for the yearbook. It’s very expensive, even for a small school it’s a lot of money. So, we do a lot of different things.

“The point of them is not only that you can wear them, but they make an instant portable sign that you can wave from the stands,” said Patnode. “You got it around your neck, you hold it up when things get exciting, then you put it back on and warm up again. It’s just perfect for our area and for the purpose that it’s for.”

Although it is nearing the end of the soccer season, the scarves are selling better than Patnode anticipated.

“Both the varsity teams are advancing in the season. Which is not really surprising, but you never know,” Patnode said. “Fortunately though we can always depend on our teams to do their

Understanding climate change

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — Climate change can be a complicated issue. The Institute of Climate Studies out of Chazy is working to simplify it for the public.

Founded in 2008 by climate scientist Dr. Ray Johnson, the organization’s aims to “educate the public and encourage discussion of climate change, its impact on the North Country through research and peer-reviewed data presentations,” according to the institute’s Web site, www.icsusa.org.

“I’ve been a scientist most of my life,” Johnson explained. “ Since I get a number of scientific journals delivered, I’ve been following what’s going on in the area of climate science and I personally see information that’s’ being developed that is of great concern to me in terms of the direction that we’re headed. And because I’ve got grandchildren, I’ve decided that I needed to really take that information and try to make it more available to the public.”

On Oct. 21, Johnson spoke about climate science and climate change at the Alice T. Miner Museum by using various scientific data and charts.

“The issue today is fairly simple, in my judgment,” Johnson said. “Carbon dioxide and the other gases that we’re putting into the atmosphere are changing the balance of nature as we’ve known for the last 10,000 and as

we’ve known for the last 400,000 years.”

Johnson explained the research shows a pattern of varying carbon dioxide levels that date back 400,000 years, with each cycle lasting about 10,000 years. When the carbon dioxide levels were at their lowers, about 190 parts per million, is when the planet was in an ice age.

The higher levels were around 290 ppm. The earth is currently at 392 ppm, with 40 billion pounds of carbon being emitted every year.

“If we each [reduce] one pound, that’s a lot, but it’s not going to make that big a difference,” Johnson said. “What we need is the political will and leadership to bring us into the green energy era.”

According to Johnson, currently China is the leader in green energy.

“They’re putting up a new big windmill every hour on average. They’ve decreed that they’re going to have 10,000 miles of high speed rail, and will have it because that’s the kind of political system that they have,” he explained.

Any sort of change in the current amount of carbon emissions is what Johnson hopes to achieve.

“I think it’s going to take a concerted effort,” he said. “Everyone should try and find ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Whether it’s through gardens, whether it’s through insulation, whether it’s through photovoltaics, or getting your own wind mill. There’s a lot of things that we can do individually, but that has to be supplemented by policy at the top and I think if we can get the right information to

people, hopefully they’ll make decisions in the ballot box that makes sense.”

The Web site, which offers numerous articles and charts to help the general public understand climate science, was created by both Johnson and Beekmantown Middle School science teacher Scott Danville.

“We have both agreed that what we’d like to do with this Web site is to make it almost a one stop shop and we’re working in that direction,” said Johnson. “It has a large number of reports. So far in 2010 we’ve probably put 40

reports in there. And they can all be downloaded.”

“We’re trying to get local people to contribute information to the Web site and to make it a one stop shop s anyone can go on there and find books, find reports, find information, all my articles … they’re all on there,” Johnson added.

Jenks explained Luke’s Lodge is a 24-foot long lean-to built by his son, Luke, for his Eagle Scout project. It sleeps about 15 people and can be used by the public. For awhile, Jenks was supplying his own wood for the lean-to, but decided it would be good volunteer hours for the Boy Scouts to gather their own wood.

“Some of it is fallen trees. Some of it is a few trees we’ve pulled off the sides of the trails to widen them out or make it easier to go around, or something that might have fallen onto the trails,” he explained of the wood that was gathered.

With nearly 2,000 skier and snowshoer visits a year, and a cross-country skier himself, Jenks has seen the benefits of cleaning up the trails.

“The trails keep getting better every year,” he said. “I’ve talked to people when they come out here and they’re just like, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe what a beautiful spot this is and that we’re able to use this.” It’s like a gold mine. It’s something hidden that nobody knows about.

Although more people are learning about the NLT, Jenks is still amazed at how many people haven’t heard about it.

“They’re missing it because there’s always snow here. When there’s no snow in Plattsburgh, there’s two feet of snow on the ground here,” he said.

The Boy Scout troops have fully taken advantage of what the land trust offers, combining the cleanup day with an overnight camping trip. The boys spent the night Oct. 23, enjoying bonfires, and a huge Capture the Flag game in the woods.

“The land trust is open to the public. It’s free to come here. People can come, they can camp, they can walk, they can pick apples, they can do whatever they want to do,” Jenks said. “It’s for the public. For the community.”
